Memories of Murder (2003, dir. Bong Joon-ho) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
Prior to 2019 (really 2020, if we want to get really specific) there probably weren't a lot of people in the States who could tell you who Bong Joon-ho is if pressed. Nowadays, after Bong's historic first non-English language Best Picture win for Parasite, most people would at least identify the name as familiar, and for good reason. Parasite is undoubtedly amazing; its message is both regionless and timeless, it has superb acting and brilliant cinematography, it is one of the best films of the modern era, if not any era. However, prior to Parasite, back in the days when Bong's fanbase outside of his native South Korea was limited to foreign film lovers and people who really liked Snowpiercer, most people would probably point to his breakout film, Memories of Murder, as his best work, and for a lot of the same reasons that people point to Parasite as his best now.
I'm not entirely sure why it has taken me so long to sit down and watch this considering how much I've enjoyed the other films of his that I've seen, but I'm glad I finally did. Following the true story of the detectives that investigated the Hwaseong serial murders of the mid-80s to the mid-90s, the film works as both a gripping crime thriller and a social satire of the failings of the legal system and the corrupt nature of a lot of its employees. One of our protagonists, Detective Park Doo-man (played brilliantly as always be Song Kang-ho) as well as his partner Detective Cho Yong-koo, are horrible police officers. They fake evidence, they torture victims until they'll confess to anything to make it stop, and they scoff at real investigative discoveries and excuse them as the other detectives "watching too many crime movies" (which in and of itself is an amazing line that both pokes fun at and winks a respectful eye towards the crime films that it follows in the legacy of); all they care about is putting someone away, regardless of if the person is actually guilty of the crime they're accused of committing or not. You can watch the film purely from a plot perspective and be entertained and engrossed, but much like Parasite, the true genius of it lies within this satirical commentary.
The knowledge that maybe the killer could have been stopped, victims could have been saved, if more resources had been poured into actually searching for the real killer instead of trying to put away people who obviously had nothing to do with it is maddening, but somehow Bong is able to inject humor throughout the film that makes all of these frustrating people and darker moments have a brief sense of levity without taking away from the nature of the subject matter. It's truly amazing the way he is able to craft stories that are not only interesting from a surface level perspective, but that contain darker themes and complex social commentary that even casual moviegoers can pick up on and appreciate, and then even with all of that blend comedy and drama so seamlessly you rarely notice the change. Another element of the film that I personally found brilliant, and that I briefly mentioned above, is the way that it seems to be a love letter to the crime dramas/thrillers that came before it and a criticism of them at the same time. If you've been following my reviews for awhile, you'll know how deeply I appreciate films that are able to strike that balance (Scream, Nope, etc.). The ability to acknowledge the problems with a genre without completely dismissing the films that portray those flaws as lesser or bad is something that just appeals to me on such a core level. This may just sound like a meeting of the Bong Joon-ho Fan Club, but it is truly awe-inspiring that he can make a film that has something for everyone in it, and can make everyone enjoy the other bits that, in any other movie, they may not have.
Now, Memories of Murder isn't perfect, it is only Bong's second film and some of those early film maker pitfalls exist here. A lot of the first half of the movie tends to drag a bit, and there may be certain scenes that could have cut or sequences that could have been re-edited to keep that sense of urgency (or maybe even the lack thereof on the part of the detectives) a little more present and flowing. Also, and I know I just got done ranting about how great this exact quality was, but sometimes the injection of humor could overtake the film a little too much. It doesn't happen but maybe once or twice, but I did take note of those moments as something that stood out to me, at least. Outside of these few kinks, Memories of Murder just further proves that Bong Joon-ho just knows what he's doing, and I can safely add another film to the "great" column of his filmography, and hopefully soon I can finish out watching the rest of them.
Score: 9/10

Branding in Seongsu
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Branding in Seongsu (2024, South Korea)
Director: Jung Hun Soo
Writers: Choi Sun Mi & Jeon Seon Young
Mini-review:
Look, I'm not gonna say this was good, but it kept me engaged throughout. And it's all thanks to the two leads. They basically save the whole thing with their chemistry and their comedic chops. I was particularly impressed by Lomon, who went out of his comfort zone for this role and delivered in every single scene. The show worked better as comedy than anything else, since it was pretty funny at times. But yeah, whenever it tried to highlight serious issues, it ended up falling into the same old stereotypes. And some of the final twists made little to no sense. I don't regret watching Branding in Seongsu, though, cause the episodes were short and it never had time to get boring. But I do wish the writing and directing were as good as the acting, or less messy at the very least.

Crash Course in Romance (2023)
Tumblr media
Really enjoyed this show. The writing and story felt familiar, but the actors were good enough that it still seems fresh. Could have done with 50% less obsessed crazy stalker people though.
What Worked
The leads were fun to watch both separately and together. The overall relationships were interesting and the drama does a good job of making something that should be rather dull (math class) seem exciting. Even the most detestable people in the show still had some moments of sympathy as well, which makes them seem like real people, and it also makes the show feel safer rather than super stressful.
What Didn't Work
The weird murder plot, but this was less offensive than most and they didn't allow it to take over the show.
The Performances
Jeon Do-yeon as Nam Haeng-seon. I'm not sure if it's groundbreaking to take a character that is super common in romance (the plucky young woman who just wants to take care of her family, but OMG life is terrible) and just age her up 15 years. Sadly, it kind of feels that way. In any case, this actor is great, she's apparently a big deal in K-film and I'm so glad we got to see her here.
Jung Kyung-ho as Choi Chi-yeol. He's not all that different from the character he played in Hospital Playlist (I enjoyed him in that), but his story is different enough that it still seemed interesting. Jung Kyung-ho did a great job as a lead, and I liked all the different character moments the writers put out there for him. Not all of them stuck (for example, the tragic student death that he seems to have forgotten about after five episodes), but overall it was more hits than misses.
Oh Eui-shik as Nam Jae-woo. Every time I see a character in these dramas who is on the Asperger's spectrum, I start to wonder if the writers are ticking a box or something. But as long as they make sure and put in the work to make the character feel real, then I'm okay with it. Oh Eui-shik did the work, and I was okay with it.
Lee Bong-ryun as Kim Young-joo. I enjoyed seeing her in Hometown Cha x 3 and she did a great job here (though her character is a little more one-note here). I felt her romance arc at the end was actually kind of nice.
Roh Yoon-seo as Nam Hae-yi. Really good job by a young actress who was only in her second drama. Hopefully, she'll have a long career, because she was fun to watch and the character was well done as well.
Jang Young-nam as Jang Seo-jin. The only other role I've seen her in was as kind of a bad person in IOK2NBO. She wasn't a great person here, but I had alot more sympathy for her, partly because the actor did a good job of making her relatable even during all the crazy plot stuff. I'm glad the writers left the character in a pretty good place overall.
Kim Mi-kyung as Haeng-seon's mother. I have already raved about how cool this actor is in other places. She was only in two episodes, and her character didn't even get a real name, but it was still just nice to see her on screen.
The High School Kiddos. I think they all did a good job. The writers didn't try and make them too cutesy or turn it into an afterschool special. They were fun to watch when they were on screen, and they all had good moments in the show.
The Gang of Bad Mothers With Money. I kind of enjoyed their antics, even if it felt like the writers were giving them the job of creating pointless drama at times. They were funny when they needed to be, and detestable when they needed to be, but none of them were too memorable.
The Evil Baddie Assistant Guy. Kind of a spoiler though it's not really a huge secret. I think the actor did a decent job of playing subtle with a character that slowly turns into a mustache twirling villain by the end of the series. I didn't need an interesting villain, in fact I'd rather not bother with him at all, but if you have to have a murder spree in your drama, this guy is an acceptable choice.
TL; DR:
Fun little romance / relationship drama with good casting that hit a sweet spot between familiar and fresh. Had some funny moments, and a few genuine feels but you knew going in that you'd end up with a HEA.

hello hannah, hope you're doing well 💜
thank you for going into details with your answer it was so interesting 😊 I also love when there's a good group dynamic at the core of a drama! not only does it always add something to the main relationships and characters (I watch kdramas mainly for the romance honestly but it feels weird if the main characters don't interact with other people or don't have other significant relationships in their life even if there's tension and it adds to their personality if we can see the different roles and personalities they take on in their life) but it means we get to see more different types of dynamics between people (I especially like when the core group has people of different ages and/or backgrounds) and I like how it allows writer to play with our emotions and with subplots more too. now that I think about it a lot of the shows I've liked have had that aspect!
out of the shows you've listed I've watched run on, twenty five twenty one, weightlifting wairy kim bok joo and reply 1988. I've also watched some of vincenzo and our beloved summer but not fully (I think I was too busy by the time vincenzo entered its last quarter so I dropped it but I saw most of the ending in gifs since then lol and for our beloved summer I just don't really think I was in the mood for it at the time so I let it go). and rookie cops has been on my to watch list for a while it seemed fun and heartwarming 😊
my questions today are : if you could pick the 5 most memorable characters from all the dramas you've watched, who would it be and why? (they don't have to be your faves) and do you think you have a favourite type of character?
also christmas is now super close (I can't wrap my head around it weirdly), do you celebrate it?
your kdrama secret santa 🎥
Hi kdrama secret santa! I’m doing well, but got myself a bit busy (some of it self-imposed busy-ness like deciding to reorganize my room…) How about you? It’s almost Christmas… Do you have any big plans to celebrate? As for me, we usually just have family dinner at midnight of the 25th (then again on actual evening of the 25th)… Basically lots of eating. :P
I do love romance a lot, and yes, I think I primarily watch for romance, too (romcoms mostly), but yeah when there’s well rounded side characters, and good relationships with those side characters, then it makes that romance that much better for me. I loved Run On for that reason, cause it isn’t just about Mi-joo and Seon-gyeom… they have a life outside of each other, and even between each other, past the romance.
Rookie Cops!!! You should watch it. As you already know, I’m a sucker for group relationships/friendships, and this one is one of the better ones in terms of that. I had no expectations for that show when I started, and was reluctant to actually start because I thought it might be like the other Police University drama that aired just months before that, which I didn’t enjoy, but it surprised me. The growth of their friendship was really well done, and the kids getting involved in the overarching plot made sense. I think it was first and foremost a show about their college experience, and the ~crime/corruption plot is not centre stage (as opposed to the Police University drama…)
The romance is cute in that show, too!!
5 most memorable characters…hmmm I’m just gonna say the 5 that immediately came to mind:
Kim Jenna (Idol: the Coup) - I don’t know why she (and honestly the rest of Cotton Candy) has stuck with me for so long, but probably because the first 3 eps of the drama had her hit rock bottom so many times that I cried for her so much, that when she starts picking herself and her group back up, I just couldn’t help but cheer for her
Hong Cha-young (Vincenzo) - she was just a fun morally grey character that will gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss you. Jeon Yeo-been’s acting throughout gives the character a lot more nuance, especially in the tiny moments you see her anger building under the surface.
Kook Yeon-soo (Our Beloved Summer) - she’s memorable to me because she’s a character who’s had to sacrifice her youth and happiness at a young age in order to make a living for her and her grandma. And when she was young she didn’t know she could rely on other people for help because she’s done it alone for so long, but later on in the story she learns how to rely on people more, and also realize that even back then she was never really alone and has had the support of so many people
Kim Yu-mi (Yumi’s Cells) - a lot of it has to do with seeing Yumi’s… cells. Since they give us so much perspective on her inner thoughts, she’s memorable cause her cells were memorable. Also, I just loved her storyline in the show is realizing that she’s enough and her own happiness shouldn’t have to rely on the person she’s dating.
Oh Mi-joo (Run On) - I think she’s one of the more well-rounded and well-written characters in drama?? How she has a career, has very specific hobbies, but also some bad habits (like her whack sleep schedule cause of her work). One of the lines that stuck with me is when she said she values herself more than anyone else… and how she doesn’t want to love herself too much, but she doesn’t want to be hard on herself either. Idk I think that’s just beautiful.
I think it’s safe to say my favourite type of character are women :P jk jk I think I like characters I can relate to.. like in some ways I can relate to Yeon-soo, Yu-mi and Mi-joo.
Not sure if you’ll be able to send a message before the reveal, but I hope you have a very happy holidays!

CRASH COURSE IN ROMANCE // KDRAMA DİZİ YORUMU

İmdb puanı: 7,9 Benim puanım: 8
Drama: Crash Course in Romance (English title) / Ilta Scandal (Korean title)
Hangul: 일타 스캔들
Director: Yoo Je-Won
Writer: Yang Hee-Seung
Date: 2023
Language: Korean
Country: South Korea
Cast: Jeon Do-Yeon, Jung Kyoung-Ho, Roh Yoon-Seo, Oh Eui-Sik, Kim Mi-Kyung, Lee Bong-Ryun, Jang Young-Nam, Shin Jae-Ha
2023 (59th) BaekSang Arts Awards - April 28, 2023 Best New Actress (Roh Yoon-Seo)

1998.07 Junior Magazine – Growing Gale article
Tumblr media
Enjoy the shameless repost of something I did on Reddit.
Growing Gale, G.G / We'll become a driving force in the music industry!
Two or so months ago, this group had been presented in the rookie introduction section. This team, composed of three brilliant girls, had released their album with the cover in a finished state. In between the past two months, though, something unexpected happened. Due to circumstances that couldn't be helped, two members left the group. But remaining member Jeong Ji-su and the added members Yeom Seon-mi and Jeon Chae-hee have not only rebuilt the group's foundation, but have also used the brief hardships as foundation to further upgrade their teamwork. Coverage: Park Jeong-seon / Photography: Lee Won-gi
This is how we debuted!
Jeong Ji-su, who became a "first generation member" in the blink of an eye, had dreamed of becoming a singer since she was young. The new members, Seon-mi and Chae-hee, are Miss Kyeongi candidates who have great looks and bodies to show off. Seon-mi became a member by passing an audition, and Chae-hee, who'd been working hard to become a singer, entered by her older sister's suggestion and completed the line-up.
How's our singing?
The track Ji-su likes the most from this album is "Forever", the sole ballad. Some of that comes from her preference of ballads over dance, but the person who wrote this song is none other than Ji-su. She wrote the lyrics from her own experience. Said by herself, her weaknesses come from her shallow range and the lack of power in her voice, and her strength comes from her ability to freely change the thickness of her voice. She likes singing Lim Sung-eun's songs, like "미련 (Lingering)" and "자존심 (Confidence)".
Seon-mi likes the tracks "멀어진 너 (You Far Apart)" and "탈출 (Escape)" the most from their first album. "You Far Apart" she says matches well with the recent World Cup, and "Escape" fits well to her liking of powerful songs. She likes Lee So-ra and So Chan-hwee's songs and enjoys singing them.
The youngest Chae-hee likes the title track "애인탈한 (Recapturing a Lover)". A bright and cheerful song of the Miami sound, the cute lyrics really get to her. Chae-hui, with her characteristic husky voice, likes every song by Seo Taiji and Boys. She doesn't just like them - she's their supporter to an almost fanatic level. It was thanks to Seo Taiji and Boys that she first thought of being a singer.
Dancing is so hard!
In line with the bright and cheerful mood of the title track, the dance is also quite lively and cute. Ji-su, Seon-mi, and Chae-hee ended up working with rapper J, and nowadays they're busy praticing the dance 6 hours per day. Chae-hee seems to follow the steps well, but Ji-su finds the strength-demanding "twisting" move difficult, and Seon-mi, the tallest of the three, often lets out qualms with the dance's difficulty, calling her body a "granny body". But the bond between the three - and J as well - have strengthened, and their perfect teamwork can't be broken. Now, they're confident in themselves, no matter when or where they stand.
Three women confident in their eyes
Next, we asked them a question about personal appearances. Ji-su's most confident in her dimples and her slightly saggy eyes, and she laments the rest of herself as a big ball of insecurities. What she likes in a man? She likes her men about 180 cm tall and prefers a slender type to a muscle man. She also says she likes men cute from head to toe. Of course, Seon-mi gave a point to her refreshing eyes, and she pointed to her plump cheeks as an insecurity. Thanks to that, she doesn't smile often when taking pictures in fear of her face looking chubby. As for men, she says if a guy's taller than her she doesn't even pay mind to his looks. She likes a man with "that kind of feeling", you know. Chae-hee's proud of her eyes and her hands, and she's unconfident with her toes. Having done ballet in the past, her toes got smushed and ugly, so in summer she never wears sandals that show her toes. Rapper J likes, in short, pretty, loveable, and feminine women.
What we like and what we don't
Ji-su likes to be around others, and she hates big talkers and mice. Sun-mi goes crazy over little babies under the age of five, and she can't help but buy pretty home decorations. On the flipside, she despises warts [T/N: or mantises? it's the same word in Korean] and liars. Chae-hee likes meeting people and the word love, and she hates disgusting foods like dog meat. Just like the meaning of the group's name, we can't wait to see how big of a gale they will bring to the music scene.

Jeon Do-yeon in 'One Big Scandal' was the stepmother of Noh Yoon-seo…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jeon Do-yeon in 'One Big Scandal' was Noh Yoon-seo's real mother, not her aunt.
In tvN's new Saturday and Sunday drama, 'One Other Scandal' (played by Yang Hee-seung, Yeo Eun-ho, directed by Yoo Je-won), which premiered on the 14th, Nam Hae-yi (Noh Yoon-seo) asked Nam Haeng-seon (Jeon Do-yeon) to cut off Choi Chi-yeol's (Jung Kyung-ho) lecture.
Nam Haeng-seon is a former national handball player and currently runs a “national side dish shop” with Kim Yeong-joo (Lee Bongnyeon). The side dish store, known for its delicious food, was visited by mothers of test takers, as well as Jo Soo-hee (Kim Seon-yeong), Lee Mi-ok (Hwang Bo-ra), and Jang Seo-jin (Jang Young-nam) to buy side dishes.
Nam Hae-yi was a student who was good at studying without going to an academy, but he had limitations. She was so good at studying that she was checked by Bang Soo-ah (Kang Na-yeon), but she couldn't put much effort into math. She was invited by Lee Seon-jae (Lee Chae-min) to listen to Choi Chi-cheol's lecture, but it was not easy for her to tell her story due to her tight family.
Choi Chi-yeol, the ‘one of the best math instructors’, was a ‘one-trillion-dollar man’. When PD asked to spend 3 hours on CF filming and spend 10 more minutes on it, Choi Chi-yeol showed charisma by immediately converting the amount of money he could earn in 10 minutes and warning, saying, "My nickname is a man worth 1 trillion won." . However, in class, he was sweeter and kinder than anyone else to the students.
Choi Chi-yeol suffered from an eating disorder due to stress due to a trauma caused by an incident three years ago. He was not well-nourished to the point that he would vomit immediately after eating. Although he was embroiled in a scandal the next day, especially for returning a schoolgirl who had invaded his house, he was forced to end up in the hospital.
Chiyeol Choi reacted nervously to the sound of a camera shutter when he was caught up in a scandal over a secretly taken photo. He misunderstood Nam Jae-woo (Oh Ri-sik), who had just pressed the shutter to take a picture of the tiger engraved on his jacket, and took his cell phone away, and then pursued the Southbound line.
