Another Eat-the-Rich Film, "Parasite" is an Exploration of Class at Its Deadliest
The wait is (finally) over! My review of Bong Joon-Ho's materpiece, "Parasite" is now live!
Content Warning: Parasite contains depictions of severe class disparity, violence, grooming, and extreme manipulation. Viewer discretion is advised. Spoilers for Parasite ahead! In January of 2020, the English-centered film industry was put on blast for not giving foreign language films their proper flowers. Director Bong Joon-Ho, already celebrated by Hollywood and audiences alike for previous…

Memories of Murder is a great film that many smarter people have commented on, tackling themes of power, corruption, ontological evil, and how hard Korean outfits went in the 1980s.
It's a Bong Joon-ho film, it was bound to be good, and so I don't think any one part of the film surprised me if only because I went in with a completely open mind, only knowing enough to understand that this was a Korean film about cops chasing a serial killer and that it was really really good.
What got me wasn't the masterful take on the cop story and the corrupting nature of police work, but rather how vibrant the backgrounds are. This is a film of muted tones and subtle (though rich!) colorwork, and yet the backgrounds are so alive. Where Wes Anderson invokes the background of a play with his almost 2D facades, Bong Joon-ho's backgrounds are 3D, bringing depth to the little vignettes he presents and breathing life into the setting.
There are two key factors in how he does this: Camera Movement and character density. Unlike Anderson's "On-rails" stylistic quirk, the camera in memories of murder follows the characters more naturally, while maintaining a smooth, measured pace that doesn't fall to the excesses of Paul Greengrass. Thusly the character movements in conjunction with the camera feel very intentional but with none of the hyperstyle of Anderson to shake one out of the narrative.
Pairing this movement with the extreme balance of how many characters are part of the backgrounds is extremely effective. Unlike Saving Private Ryan, the movie doesn't give you so many background characters that the faces all start to blend. Each character in the background, even when unnamed, keeps a personality. Yet unlike a Tati film, it fills the frame with them in a way that prevents you the viewer from over-analyzing their presence onscreen.
This is sophistication in filmmaking, and I adored every minute of the film. Go watch it immediately.
