Rehabilitation of Trafficking Victims

Human trafficking, also known as modern slavery, is one of the most serious offenses in the present day. The exact figures of victims of human trafficking aren't known due to its the nature of the crime, but it is estimated that millions of people are victims of human trafficking yearly. The United States is one of the largest countries that demand children for sex. Many of these children are our most vulnerable citizens - foster children, homeless youth, etc. Courage Worldwide was founded in 2005 to build homes and provide resources for child victims of sex trafficking - here in the United States and round the world..

Restoration and rehabilitation is the process involved in helping individuals who have experienced traumatic situations, such as human trafficking, be given the resources necessary for them to heal from their trauma and build a future for themselves. However, healing takes time. A victim must be in an environment that is first safe for them - physically and emotionally. Then they can begin their unique healing journey. Even though it is impossible for a victim to completely erase the memory of the event, it is possible to heal and move forward. Without getting the needed assistance, victims often stay in an unsafe situation because they have no place to go.

Important elements in the process of rehabilitation, recovery, and reintegration included the individual's age, overall physical and mental well-being, personal history, family dynamics, cultural context, length of exploitation, and their view of the harm inflicted on them and its impact on their future, particularly in cases where they have endured commercial sexual exploitation. The restoration process also includes providing access to education, employment opportunities, and prolonged psychological and social support - all which Courage Worldwide provides.

The Courage House program offers various educational opportunities, covering both formal and informal learning, as well as life skills development and vocational training. Those from foreign countries may require particular assistance, especially those planning to stay in the host country, to provide testimony against traffickers. Also, to prevent victims from being trafficked again, they need skills that enable them to generate sufficient income so they are never vulnerable to a trafficker.

Victims of trafficking often endure significant physical and mental anguish due to the violence, sexual assault, intimidation, substance dependency, and various tactics employed by traffickers to exert control over them. Psycho-social support and counseling, which address psychological and social needs, can assist trafficking victims in overcoming anxiety and depression, allowing them to regain their self-confidence and begin the process of rebuilding their lives. Courage Worldwide employs mental health professionals with years of experience in adolescent trauma who created the successful Courage House program.

The process of reintegrating victims of trafficking is challenging as most of the residents of Courage House have no safe family to return to. Each experience varies from the other, and it encompasses not just the person affected but also the surrounding environment and cultural context in which the reintegration occurs. That is why Courage Worldwide offers a long-term commitment to the individual to facilitate this process and provide resources as they navigate independent living.

There are some countries with well-developed rehabilitation and reintegration initiatives to assist trafficking survivors upon their return. These programs have proven to be particularly effective in countries such as the Philippines and South Korea. Also, the United Nations created a new fund in 2010 known as the UN Voluntary Trust Fund for Victims of Trafficking in Persons. This fund was created for organizations that assist survivors of human trafficking in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). However, in the United States and East Africa there continues to be a severe gap in available beds and resources for minor victims of trafficking. That is why Courage Worldwide has prototyped it's residential safe house program so that it can be replicated, scaled and brought to numerous cities and countries around the world.

ARC Review of Enemy of my Dreams by Jenny Williamson

Rating: 4.5/5 Heat Level: 3.5/5 Publication Date: February 4th

Premise:

Roman princess Julia engineers her own kidnapping and forges an alliance with Visigoth warlord Alaric as they embark on a military campaign through Europe.

My review:

An EPIC historical romance with high stakes and old-school sensibilities; Enemy of my Dreams has the kind of romantic payoff that feels so satisfying because of how dearly the hero and heroine fight for it.

This story is set in the last days of a crumbling Roman Empire; Julia is a spoiled Roman princess and quite the hedonist (there's a lot of casual and not-so-casual drug and alcohol use in this book) BUT she's also way more clever than her douchebag brother the emperor, and resents being controlled by him... which is why she ends up engineering her own spur-of-the-moment kidnapping AT KNIFEPOINT by biiiiiig baaaad warlord Alaric. For anyone who's a fan of a kidnapping in their romances, this is ABSOLUTELY the book for you: tension-filled horse rides for two as they trudge across Europe on a military campaign, some tying-up action when Alaric is extra annoyed by Julia, Alaric generally being horny-annoyed by Julia...

And Alaric has his moments of menace (which, HOT) and the gravity of his position is not lost on you since he is the leader of a landless, starving people. But he's a Romance Hero first and foremost, so he's not above needling Julia by doing things like attending parties shirtless and flirting with his ex— there's a push-and-pull quality to their relationship that I enjoyed a lot, and Julia gives it right back to him (to the best of her ability lol). But when push comes to shove, Alaric is all-in with Julia fairly early on. He's the one swearing devotion and loyalty and kingdoms to her first, while Julia is like "is this..... what fuckbuddies normally do?". There is a third-act breakup that's quite gut-wrenching, but Jenny Williamson makes both of them WORK for their reunion and ultimately, there is a really moving grovel before they come together again.

Sidenote, Alaric was a real guy and obviously liberties were taken with the historical accuracy of this book (much like, say, Monica McCarty with some of her Highland Guard heroes and heroines who were real people), but I'm not complaining.

The sex:

Can sex scenes be epic? I'm choosing YES because I don't know how else to describe this man thrusting inside her while ardently swearing to be her shield and BURN DOWN THE WORLD for her. There are a handful sprinkled throughout the book, and I do think they're a little less explicit than what I'd expect from a historical, they're there, and they're great.

Overall:

I want more historicals like this— more unique settings like the Roman Empire, more political, more sweeping romances and epic plots that take place over a span of time and countries. I'd absolutely recommend this to any historical romance reader looking for something new and refreshing.

The Global Crisis of Child Trafficking

Child trafficking remains one of the most critical human rights violations that affects millions of children worldwide. This complex issue intersects with various forms of discrimination, including poverty, gender norms, and racial inequalities. Therefore, a multifaceted approach that targets all these aspects is necessary to combat child trafficking effectively.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), one in every three victims of human trafficking is a child. The Global Report on Trafficking in Persons reveals that girls are particularly vulnerable, representing a significant portion of detected trafficking victims. Child trafficking takes many forms, including sexual exploitation, forced labor, domestic servitude, forced marriage, and involvement in criminal activities such as begging, theft, and drug trafficking.

While trafficking affects all genders, it impacts girls a lot more compared to boys. They are often trafficked for sexual exploitation and domestic servitude. Boys, on the other hand, are more frequently trafficked for forced labor, though they can also be victims of sexual exploitation. The UNODC report found that between 2004 and 2018, the share of boys among detected trafficking victims significantly increased. This highlights the need for gender-sensitive approaches that address the unique vulnerabilities of both girls and boys.

Traffickers resort to several tactics to recruit and control their victims. They usually target vulnerable children, including runaways, homeless youth, and children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Traffickers prey on these children by promising a better life that offers safe shelter, financial compensation, or friendship and romance. The use of technology, particularly online platforms and social media, has become increasingly prevalent in recruitment and exploitation. Traffickers also employ tactics of violence and coercion, including physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, to maintain control over victims. Additionally, traffickers may provide drugs or alcohol to create dependency and compliance.

Technology plays a dual role in child trafficking. While it facilitates recruitment and exploitation, it also offers tools for prevention and detection. Law enforcement agencies have started to use technology tools to identify potential trafficking situations and rescue victims.

Several factors complicate efforts to address child trafficking. Underreporting remains a problem as victims often experience fear or shame and are averse to sharing their stories. Others are not fully aware they were trafficked, so they don't report their story. Victims may be mistaken for criminals, especially in cases involving forced criminal activities. Some anti-trafficking policies prioritize prosecution over victim support and rehabilitation. The international scope of trafficking complicates law enforcement efforts, and variations in how trafficking is defined and addressed across different jurisdictions pose additional challenges in standardizing efforts to tackle this global crisis.

Addressing child trafficking requires a comprehensive approach that includes education and awareness, strengthening legal frameworks, providing victim-centered support, fostering cross-sector collaboration, and addressing root causes such as poverty, discrimination, and lack of educational opportunities. While the challenge of child trafficking is not easy, there has been some progress. Increased awareness, improved legislation, and innovative approaches to prevention and victim support are making a difference.

Key priorities for the future include improving data collection and analysis to better understand trafficking trends and inform policy decisions, developing more effective strategies to identify and support male victims of trafficking, enhancing international cooperation to address cross-border trafficking, investing in long-term support and rehabilitation programs for trafficking survivors, and engaging the private sector, particularly industries at high risk for labor trafficking, in prevention efforts.

By combining these efforts with a commitment to addressing the root causes of vulnerability, it's possible to create a world where children are protected from the horrors of trafficking. The fight against child trafficking requires sustained effort and cooperation across all sectors of society, from governments and law enforcement to NGOs, communities, and individuals.

“Ale please stay. Don’t leave me, please.” Hearing her beg for me not to leave her broke my heart. 

“I’ll be right back bebé, I’m just getting some water.” 

Alba and Mami were sitting on couch when it went out to the kitchen. 

“She asked me not to leave, so I’m going to go back in there. You should go home. Thank you for your help.” I set back off to Amelia’s room. The heart breaking scene of her curled into a ball, her eyes red and swollen, and the sound of sniffles through the air. 

I put her phone on charge and her water bottle on her bed side table, quickly making my way to the other side of the bed and climbing in. Pulling her into my arms and holding her until she fell asleep. After she had been asleep for half an hour, I messaged Keira and Lucy. Telling them I had Mil and asked them to come to her apartment. I didn’t know what to do. Im not good with my own emotions, and helping someone who is so deeply hurt is new to me. 

Keira Walsh: I’m here. Let me in please. 

Reluctantly, I got up, slowly in hopes to not wake Mil. The afternoon sun has lit up the apartment, it was bright and golden, a solemn contrast to the way Mils room felt. Opening the door, I was shocked to see someone else with Keira. Leah Williamson. 

“Hi Alexia.” The England captain shyly said. I opened the door further to let both women in. 

“Sorry, I thought it would be best to call Leah. She knows everything that happened with Milly and she got on the first flight here.” I nodded my head in understanding, that was smart in Keira’s behalf. 

“Is she asleep?” 

“Yeah. She was at the beach surfing and Mami bought us back here. She was just sitting in the shower with boiling water on her, she looked.” I had to take a second to compose myself, I would not be crying in front of Leah. “She looked broken.”

Keira and Leah just looked at each other. Sharing knowing looks and then Leah spoke up. 

“She said she loved you, right? That’s what caused this?” 

“Yes.” 

“I think we should all sit down. You need to hear this Alexia.” 

There were a few things in this world that make me anxious. Meeting my sisters new girlfriends, doing interviews in English, teenage boys and Amelia Higgins. 

“Okay so obviously you know the public details of what happened with Emily and her?” 

“Si” 

“Emily was going to end things. She had written down on a piece of paper everything she wanted to say. Basically consisted of that she was still in love with Mil. Mil was still her favourite person and that Mil was her soulmate, but Emily wasn’t hers.”

“Right? Okay?”

“Emily always knew that Mils heart didn’t completely belong to her. I think she hoped that over time it would change but it never did. Mil has always loved you.” 

I didn’t say anything. This was a lot to take in, her own friends telling me she has always loved me? What could’ve happened if I had said something earlier? Ended things with Jenni earlier? 

“Ale.” Keira grabbed my hands, taking my attention away from ripping my nails off. “She doesn’t want to love you because she’s scared. After being given the note, she blamed herself. Mil thinks she caused this. She doesn’t want anything to happen to you or to your family. If you truly love her like I think you do, you’ll need to let her come to you. There’s nothing more I want than to see you both happily together but that won’t happen unless she comes to you.” 

“I’ll wait for her. I don’t care how long it takes but I won’t leave her.” 

We didn’t talk after that, the sun started setting and they were talking about ordering food for dinner. 

“I think I’m going to go home. I think it’ll, uh, it’ll be better if I’m not here when she wakes up.” 

Before Leah or Keira could reply, Amelia yelled out from the bedroom.

“Alexia? Alexia? Fuck ale please come back. I need you to come back.” her voice broke, thinking I’d left her when she needed me the most. Running back into the room, I quickly climbed into the bed and pulled her into my chest. 

“No amor. I’m here. I’m not leaving you, okay? I’m here.” I felt her nod her head against my chest, then her tears slowly wet my shirt. I didn’t care about Keira or Leah in the lounge room, all I cared about was Amelia and making sure she felt safe and comfortable. 

Leah came in a short while later, letting me know she would be staying in the spare room and to yell out if either of us needed anything. As I lay there with Amelia’s head on my chest, her arms wrapped tightly around my waist, and mine around hers, the only thing I could think of is how I could get used to this feeling. Selfish I know but it’s the truth. 

By 9pm, the house was completely quiet and dark. Everyone was sleeping or enjoying the peaceful evening. 

As the sun came through Amelia’s bedroom curtains, I felt lighter. Slowly opening my eyes I noticed she wasn’t in the room, the side of the bed she slept in was cold, her phone was gone and her favourite hoodie and wetsuit that hung on the back of her door. She was surfing. Of course. Deciding now was the best time to leave and go back to my own house, I quickly made her bed, opened her bedroom window and got the bottles of water to put in the bin. 

I had forgotten Leah was there, Keira seemingly had come too. 

“Morning capi” Keira handed over coffee. 

“Gracias.” Inhaling the smell of coffee before taking the first sip. 

“Is she awake?” Leah jerked her head towards the door. 

“She’s surfing.” No one said anything for a moment. “I’m gonna go. I’ll see you later.” Turning quickly , before either could stop me. 

I sat in my car contemplating what to do, I thought about messaging Alba, but it was too complicated. Mapi was next, but again, complicated. The only person I truly wanted to talk to was Amelia. But I wasn’t sure if she wanted that. Despite the thoughts telling me to leave her alone, I made my way to the beach. Stopping to get her a coffee so she could have it when she got out. 

Since it was still early, it was easy to park and find her stuff. I made myself comfortable and waited. I didn’t have to wait too long because she had noticed me and started making her way back to the shore. 

“I got you a coffee. Caramel latte right?” I asked as I handed it to her. 

“Thanks Ale.” She sat down, closer to me than usual. 

Silence engulfed us. 

“So Leah’s here huh?” She said more as a question than a statement. 

“Yeah. She came last night. Keira rang her apparently and she got on the first flight.” 

“I don’t know how to do this Ale.” She whispered, I turned to look at her, confused. 

“Do what?” 

“Us. It was easier when I lived in England. I didn’t have to see you everyday, be close to you, listen to you laugh at something Mapi said or watch you with Vicky and Jana. I could watch you from a distance, love you from a distance. But now? Now I’m here and it’s almost too much. It’s so-“ 

“Overwhelming?” 

“Yeah.” 

“I feel the same way.” She rested her head on my shoulder, my arm wrapping around her shoulder. 

We stayed like that for a while. It was nice. But it wouldn’t last.
