"Go on," James urged with a grin, but Regulus just rolled his eyes.

"This is stupid," he grumbled, crossing his arms petulantly. "I'm not about to make a fool of myself by jumping around trying to catch a bunch of bloody flowers, James."

"It's supposed to be a bit of fun!" insisted James, who then twisted his face into a dramatic pout. "Don't you want to marry me one day?"

Regulus rolled his eyes again. "You know I do, darling-"

"Then go catch a bouquet!"

With a huff, Regulus shook his head, but gave James a look of reluctant defeat. It was hard to say 'no' to those bambi-eyes of his.

There were a fair few people gathered behind Sirius ready for the toss. Mostly Sirius and Remus' school friends, from those Regulus could recognise; he wasn't surprised to note that both of his cousins in attendance had decided to sit out on this particular 'game' (though, he supposed Andy was already married, so only Cissa would’ve been able to, and her girlfriend Alice was already stood waiting to catch it instead).

"Alright! Are we all ready?" asked Sirius eagerly, practically bouncing from where he stood. Cheers and clapping chorused through the group, but Regulus barely held back a sigh. God, James was lucky he loved him.

The countdown began. With each number, Sirius made a practice swing backwards, his bouquet of crimson red roses in hand. "One! Two!" he counted, but 'three' never came. He was turning back around, a wide grin on his face as he started walking-

Straight towards Regulus.

Regulus blinked. What- what was...?

Passing him the bouquet, Sirius - still beaming - gently pulled him to turn around and see-

James was on one knee. James was on one knee. With a ring. Oh, fuck.

"Jamie," he managed to whisper shakily as James slipped Regulus' left hand into his own and rubbed his thumb over the back of it.

James smiled up at him hopefully. "Reg, love," he whispered. "Would you do me the honour of letting me marry you?"

Regulus was nodding before he even finished the question. There were tears brimming in his eyes, running down into his aching smile. "Yes," he breathed, letting James take his left hand and slip the ring on. "Fuck, yes. Jamie, of course."

Because with those adorable, wide bambi-eyes, how could Regulus have ever said 'no'?

James' first date with Regulus is ruined.

Okay, so maybe it's not technically a date, and it's not ruined at all, because it's a school trip with his class to the local museum to see some ancient artifacts for their history project, but James doesn't really care. No matter how much of a fan of cool ancient weapons, armor, or skeletons he is, all his thoughts are now focused on the warm hand of Regulus in his palm.

It had only been a week since Reg had unexpectedly responded positively to James' proposal to date, and that whole week had been like in the clouds for James. He thought a lot, too much, and went over every detail of their first, second, and fifth date. He planned to kiss him on the fourth and ask him to dance on the fifth. And this trip to the museum ruined all of his plans, but not that James had time to worry about it.

Because all his thoughts were focused only on Regulus' warm hand in his palm. The hand that squeezed his fingers from time to time to get his attention, to make James turn to face him and exchange smiles. The hand that suddenly squeezed his palms harder in the passage between the halls and pulled him away. James gave in, not understanding, but following his boyfriend.

Boyfriend, who dragged him to the darkest corner between the door to the technical rooms and a large stone statue and pushed him against the wall. James didn't have time to recover and ask what was happening when he felt soft lips on top of his own.

He hadn't closed his eyes in time, so he remained frozen in place, looking at Regulus' long eyelashes fluttering slightly on his closed eyelids and feeling the boy's lips move slightly on his own.

The kiss didn't last long, James wasn't even given time to recover and begin to respond when Regulus pulled away, taking a step back.

“I thought I'd be another museum piece before you decided to kiss me.”

James buried his free hand in his hair, searching for an answer, but not finding one before Regulus pulled him back toward the light.

“Quick, before we get lost.”

James thought it was too late because he had already lost himself in that boy.

Regulus was too conscious to let people see his little quirks. Not even his best friends knew about his utter dislike for vegetables that are bigger than his little finger, his annoyance when he gets more than one pump of vanilla in his matcha latte and his attraction towards bookmarks with famous paintings.

Listening to a song or an album for an entire week on repeat is one of Regulus' best kept secrets. It's not because he thinks it's weird, a lot of people do this on a daily basis. He just didn't want for anyone to know how much he is affected by the music. Music makes him vulnerable and emotional. So, for the sake of his stoic reputation, he hid this part of himself most of his life.

When he found himself home alone, with his parents gone on a work trip and with his brother out of town doing something stupid (probably), Regulus decided to get a little loose.

For James it was a normal day. He had football practice in the morning, then met his friends in a café for lunch. When Sirius proposed to go to his house to play some games on PS4, James expected a lazy afternoon with soda and junk food and Sirius yelling at Remus for not helping him enough in the battle. What he didn't expect was to see the one and only Regulus Black dancing to Prince in his way to the bathroom.

Regulus, unaware of his surroundings, was feeling the beat, moving his hips to the rhythm of the song, just in his underwear, his oversized "My Chemical Romance" T-shirt and his sunglasses. After a dramatic and elegant spin, his eyes connected with the figure of James fucking Potter, standing in his doorway like he's in his own home. Regulus paralyzed for a few long seconds, before moving towards James with sonic speed and slamming the door in front of him, cursing the gods out of his brother's best friend.

This particular event opened a new fantasy for James, who could never get the image of Regulus' hips out of his mind. On the other side of the door, Regulus was on the phone with his mother, begging her to move him to a new high school. Under no circumstances could he ever make eye contact with James Potter again.

When James had stepped into Regulus' room he hadn't been ready at all. Regulus had been avidly texting Evan and wasn't prepared at all for James of all people to just saunter in his room. He hadn't even knocked. As a result, Regulus jumped with a start, clutching his chest. He relaxed, but only slightly, when he saw it was James who had interrupted his gossip session with Evan. Regulus hastily turned his phone off, mentally willing Evan not to blow up his notifications while he was busy talking to James. Evan had a habit for freaking out if Regulus didn't respond within 10 seconds. Quite similar to how Barty would freak out if Regulus didn't show him enough love.

A package deal from the beginning, Evan and Barty were Regulus' best friends, annoying as they may be in their own, unique ways each. Evan and Barty had been dating for a solid 3 years, although those 3 years had more than a few break ups and get-back-togethers. Regulus was pretty sure though that despite their overdramatic tendencies, Evan and Barty really did love each other. Pandora and Regulus even had a bet going for who would propose first. 

Regulus raised an eyebrow at James. "Obviously no one's ever taught you to knock?" He rolled his eyes, fighting the tiny smile that was threatening to dawn on his lips. "You scared me like a boggart, James."

James didn't respond to Regulus' quips, he simply went to stand at the foot of his bed, wearing another one of his stupid, dazzling grins. He fluttered his eyelashes just slightly, and Regulus hated that his heart did a flutter at the same time. "You paged?" James asked, voice coated in honey. 

Regulus stiffened just slightly, making a desperate, last-ditch attempt to fix his into something neutral. "Y-Yes." Regulus internally screamed at himself for his stutter. "I've decided I want the surgery."

"That's all you paged me for? Just to tell me that?"

"Yes." Regulus swallowed. For some reason, he wanted nothing more than to drag James closer. But he also wished for James to just leave. Regulus was annoyed with himself and was afraid he might take that out on James. "You can leave now."

James laughed and Regulus could've choked on the sound. "Actually, I have to stay and give you information about getting the surgery," he replied, coming around to sit next to Regulus on his bed. Regulus moved over instinctively without even thinking about what he was doing. He felt his face flush when James' leg brushed against his own. 

"Well, get on with it then," Regulus answered stiffly. 

"The surgery is called Open Reduction and Internal Fixation. In the surgery I'll be setting the bone fractures with some screws. We'll be doing this as soon as possible to try to prevent any further injuries," James told him. 

Regulus nodded. He wasn't really listening due to the... distraction right in front of him.

"After the surgery though, it could take anyway from 3 months to a year for you to recover," James continued, "your knee is gonna hurt, be swollen, and stiff. You might need a brace for it, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there, love. You'll be needing some physical therapy and you won't be able to drive for about 6 weeks."

Regulus absentmindedly nodded again. He hadn't caught a single word.

"Oh, and you'll also be needing a pair of crutches," James added. He poked the tip of Regulus' nose, drawing him back to the present and out of yet another fantasy, where he may or may not have a starring role. "You still with me, Reg?"

Regulus blinked. "Um, yes." Blinked again. "Don't call me that."

"Okay, Reggie," James smiled again when the other boy scowled. "Now, I've got to tell you about the possible complications."

Regulus nodded. It might not hurt to try to focus this time.

James tears the kraft paper off the package that Regulus handed him with a smile as soon as he got home from work.

The gift is so unexpected and for no reason that James has no idea what this is can be. So his eyes widen in surprise when the paper reveals the surface of glass in an incredibly beautiful carved mahogany frame, and under the glass is a page from a magazine. 

James Potter: you can't make them love you, but you can love them first.

Below the headline is a big photo of James himself on his knees, surrounded by three dogs from his shelter, playfully wagging their tails and looking happily at the camera, smiling almost as wide as the man next to them.

A few seconds pass before James finds something to say about the gift, feeling his husband's expectant gaze on him, growing more impatient.

"Oh, isn't it... too much?" 

James even shivers a little at the thought of hanging his framed interview on their living room wall. In high school, it would have boosted his ego, but now it seems a little strange. 

"Oh, is it James Potter I'm hearing the words 'too much' from? From the one who ordered us paired rings with engravings on our first date? The one who proposed to me by bribing the entire restaurant staff for the show? Is a framed photo too much for him now?" 

The voice and expression on Regulus' face would have been interpreted by an inattentive observer as irritation and readiness to start a fight, but James had gotten to know his husband so well over the years that he unmistakably recognized the playful glint in his eyes that showed Regulus enjoying the situation, finally putting the man in the same awkward position of making a mess of himself because of some symbolic gift.

"Okay, I get your point," James laughs genuinely, looking at the frame in his hands again. "It's just..." 

"Don't you dare ask me if you deserve it. And doesn't it look a little boastful, too!" Regulus steps closer, covering the man's hands with his own. "You've worked very hard on this shelter, you've gone through many trials and learned from mistakes, so this is the least you deserve. And you're not bragging about it hanging in our living room, because it's my gift to us, so I can look up and feel proud of my stubborn and hardworking husband every waking moment. So that I can show it to all our guests, boasting that you are mine." 

Regulus stands up on his toes to kiss James lightly on the cheek. 

"Besides, I can't wait to see Sirius' face every time he sees this article again. Imagine being a rightful co-owner, but not getting this opportunity to be printed on some fancy pages? He'll be sulking for the next ten years, if not the rest of his life."

okay so i propose to thee ten things i hate about you au but its dorlene and jegulus. like when they were kids marlene and james made a pact that neither of them would be able to go on a date unless the other has also had a date.

so, bachelor and bachelorette, james and marlene, neither having EVER been on a date are just vibing.

dorcas has been trying to get with marlene for AGES and marlene finally tells her about the deal so dorcas decides that I'll just pay regulus to take james out and since james likes him alr (hes way too obvious about it) james would say yes.

dorcas pays regulus in muggle books

now prior to this, regulus has absolutely zero interest in james besides just being like woah thats a hot guy. but as they continue to date regulus is like 🤩🥰😍😍😊😊☺️☺️🫠🫠 everytime hes in james' proximity.

now, their friendgroup obviously knows of this plan, and what they know is that as soon as marlene agrees to go to the yule ball with dorcas, they'll tell james about the fake dating and stuff.

one day whilst maraudering and under the cloak james overhears asking them discussing when regulhs eill break the news blah blah blah and james is just 😮😧☹️😟

and then the next day james confronts regulus about it and hes actually crying and shit.

yeah and then marlene somehow finds out (in my mind its because dorcas asks her how james is and shes like why wouldnt james be fine🤨🤨🤨)

yeah and then she gets pissed and breaks it off with dorcas, so then dorcas nd regulus somehow get them back (i havent thought that far ahead yet)

OR

regulus who has absolutely no idea what or who jesus is and how muggles use him as like an exclamation and james has picked up on it from remus lily and mary so once james says it infront of regulus and regulus thinks james is cheating on him with another guy and james is so confused and then he makes a whole presentation about who jesus is and stuff.

regulus is mortified the entire time.

OR

just plain old basic regulus trying out homecooked indian food for the first time and he told james that he LOVES spicy food (he meant ehite people spicy food) and then they have an exciting journey.
