Classics Spotlight
This 1928 edition of The Eleven Comedies by Aristophanes was published by American publisher Horace Liveright in a limited edition of 2050. While the translator is unknown, the work was translated from its original Greek to English. Originally published by the Athenian Society, a renowned literary society in London, in 1912, this edition was exclusively available to its subscribers.
It consists of two volumes with chromolithographic plates as well as black and white illustrations created by Belgian artist Jean de Bosschere. His artwork brings the characters and scenes of the comedies to life, enhancing the reader's engagement with the text.
Aristophanes, a playwright from late 5th-century Athens, was known as the "Father of Comedy" for his significant contributions to the genre. His plays, characterized by their satirical and often political nature, set the standard for comedic writing and continue to inspire modern comedians and playwrights.

The Fantastic Kingdom: A Collection of Illustrations from the Golden Days of Storytelling
David Larkin, ed.
Ballantine Books 1975
While this thin collection of illustrations from classic books leans heavily on the major names (Rackham, Dulac, Parrish, Nielsen), it also includes wonderful selections from artists like Jessie Wilcox Smith, Charles Robinson, William Heath Robinson, Jean de Bosschere, Paul Bransom, Harry Clarke, T. Mackenzie and others. And the images are satisfyingly large.

Indie Rock Band Shapeshifted Makes an Impact with 'Gimme rock'n'roll'
The indie rock scene is currently experiencing an influx of new music with unique sounds and styles. Bands like Shapeshifted are taking the industry by storm with rock n roll that holds nothing back.
‘Gimme rock'n'roll’ by Belgium indie band Shapeshifted is a high energy guitar fest of its own time. The band gives you a song that you can bite into. Filled with fast guitars and pumping energy, the band rocks on all cylinders.
I can’t help but feel nostalgic as I listen to this music recalling classic like 'The Who’s ‘My generation’ and wondering if perhaps Shapeshifted is influenced by the greatest bands of past. I hope so because this music is sensational and I’m hoping that the new album tips the scale pulling the next generation of listeners into real rock n roll. It’s time we open the rock box and unleash a sizzling summer mixing the old and the new.
Title track from our new album released March 9th 2023 by the Belgium indie band Shapeshifted. The band consists of four experienced musicians:
Singer-guitarist Marc Van der Eecken (The Highway Band, Sugar & Cream, The Shrimptons),
Guitarist Pieter Minne (Southern Voodoo, 70's Tush, Dandelion, Buzzkill Baby),
Bassist Jean-Marc Talloen (Red Zebra, Guy Swinnen Band, Letz Zeppelin, Derek & the Dirt, Weez)
Drummer Peter De Bosschere (An Pierlé, Derek & the Dirt, Weez, Give Buzze, Needle & the Pain Reaction).
The band was founded in 2011 and after the first four years there were a few personnel changes. May 2019, the four original group members decided to reunite.
Since the first performance in May 2011, the band played more than 200 concerts. Shapeshifted is known for its energetic live performances. The music is often compared to that of The Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop, Dr. Feel good.
Shapeshifted played three times in Ghent's Charlatan, Kinky Star, Zenith, Petit Tonneau, Le Montmartre, Festival Acosse, Festival Nandrin, Castle Rock, More Blues Festival ... In 2015 the band was invited as a headliner at Puglia Rock in Ostuni (IT ).
The debut CD "Shapeshifter" was released in 2012 and was played gray on RTBF Classic 21. "Spit it Out" the first single from the follow-up "Old Nick's Fire" was in the top 20 of Virgin Radio Italy for months.
In the annual review 2014 of Rolling Stone Magazine Italy the number was number 9. "Spit it Out" can also be found on the compilation CD Virgin Radio Style Rock 6.
The band is currently working on a third CD of which "Soldier" is the single in advance. The album will be released spring 2020.

Jean de Bosschère (1878-1953) illustrations for The First Temptation of Saint Anthony by Flaubert (1924) The duotones don’t make for great scans, or rather, I don’t know how to get better scans on my scanner, but I hope these will do.

Banned Books Week
The 24th-30th September marks 'Banned Books Week'. The intention of this week is to celebrate the freedom to read. Below we have selected some works from our library that were previously censored.
Our first work, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, centres on the horror and immorality of slavery. Published in 1852, these themes did not align with the Confederacy, which heavily relied upon slavery as a means to sustain its agricultural economy. As such, this book was banned during the Civil War, as a protest from the defenders of slavery and a way to minimise response from abolitionists. Our edition of Uncle Tom’s Cabin is the first official copy to be released in the UK. Prior to this, several unofficial copies had been produced and circulated. Whilst much controversy surrounded Stowe’s work, the reason for censorship in the UK was vastly different to those voiced in the Confederate States. Rather than shunning the pro-slavery themes, it was the portrayal of America as the ‘greatest and most free’ nation that was disliked by the British. These initial fears did not stop Uncle Tom’s Cabin from becoming the bestselling novel of the nineteenth century and remaining a highly influential and integral work of anti-slavery literature. The copy in our collection marks the shift in the UK towards its acceptance as such.Click here to see our listing.
We also have a copy of The Key To Uncle Tom's Cabin. This was a supportive text to Stowe's novel in which she presented the facts regarding the horrors of slavery. The work was written to prove that she had not exaggerated or misrepresented slavery in her previous work. Click here to see our listing.
The passing of time does not necessarily mean that a book becomes immune from government censorship. Balzac’s 1837 collection of short stories, known as Droll Stories or Droll Tales was later banned in Canada and Ireland for its obscenity. Ireland only lifted this ban in 1953, over a hundred years after the original text was published. The Droll Stories contains 30 tales, split into three sections, each with Balzac’s characteristic realism. However, it was the licentiousness and innuendo filled content that lead to its being banned. We have a number of copies of Droll Stories in our collection, including a fine privately copy, once owned by the noted book collector Hugh Selbourne MD and complete with numerous colour illustrations by Belgian painter Jean de Bosschere. Click here for our listing.
In some instances, the banning of a book increases its notoriety to such an extent that the censorship becomes an integral part of the work's context. D H Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover is perhaps one of the most well-known examples of this. The story centres on the emotional and physical relationship between an upper class woman and a working class man. Lawrence's erotic descriptions meant that an unexpurgated edition was not openly published until 1960, 32 years after its initial release. Following the publication of the unexpurgated edition further controversy ensued as Penguin, the publishing house, was brought to court for its production of ‘obscene materials’. After Penguin won the trial, the book went on to sell 3 million copies. Whilst the work was popular due to its own merit, the notoriety gained through the trial certainly increased the visibility of the novel. The UK was by no means the only country which banned the novel, with Australia, the USA and Canada just a few examples of where else the novel was censored. Australia even banned a book regarding the censorship trial in the UK. Click here to see one of our copies of Lady Chatterley.
Should the matter of banned books have piqued your interest, we have a book on the subject titled The Banned Books of England and Other Countriesby Alec Craig. Craig analyses the conception of literary obscenity along with the social repercussions that come from this. The work is a fascinating read for anybody interested in the subject as a whole.
