I just recently finished "Stanley" by Tim Jeal, and it's an absolutely fascinating read because Tim Jeal had access to personal documents that no other biographer had previously been granted access to. In my love of a good biography experience, it usually means the one that HAS that access is a fucking banger, and this one is no exception.
The Stanley family, in 1982, bequeathed all of Stanley's personal papers to Belgium. Stanley--after his best-known "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" African exploration--went back to Africa to map out trading stations for Belgium.
If you don't know: King Leopold of Belgium was an entire fucking bucket of shit who pretended to want to treat Africa and Africans with respect when he really just wanted a colony because his dick was microscopic. He lied to hundreds if not thousands of people about how intentions for sending someone into Africa. One of the people he lied to was Stanley.
The thing is, Stanley actually DID have respect for Africa and Africans, and he spoke out against Leopold when Leopold showed his true nature.
However, there was no proof of Stanley's personal convictions for a long time. Yeah, he'd called Leopold out in the press, but by that point he was a member of Parliament, so his actual anger at Leopold's actions was in question.
When the Stanley family bequeathed Stanley's diaries, letters, etc. to Belgium, it was because they felt Belgium had been the only country to respect Stanley's legacy as an explorer.
But then, Belgium refused to give anyone access to Stanley's papers until 2002. Why, you might ask?
Because Stanley's papers prove he wasn't a racist shitbag like Leopold.
Was he a colonialist? Yup. In the same way that many, many people at the time were. He believed that the best way to bring Africa into the "modern way" was to connect Europe to Africa. In the modern day, that's some fucking bullshit. At the time, it was fucking enlightened.
If you're curious about some nuance on an explorer you may best know for imperialism, I highly recommend it. Jeal doesn't think Stanley is perfect, but he has a lot of sources showing Stanley is an interesting peson with positives and negatives.

Nightmare, have you ever heard of a man called Jeal and his hidden Ghoti Shop?
Nightmare
"Of course, I don't think you can travel the Cosmos very long without running into either Jeal or one of his employees. He's quite interesting - he has the power to make everyone's whises come true, but most people will still turn down his help, out of suspicion or because of their learned attitudes. A bit like Cassandra's curse.
"Also I don't say this often about others, especially mortals, but he can be a bit unsettling. Once when we met he asked if I'd allow him to grant my wish. I told him I was already omnipotent and could make all my wishes come true myself. Then, he gave me this kinda sad smile and told me that must make having unfulfilled wishes that much more painful.
"It's fun to watch his antics from afar, but I try to avoid direct meetings since then..."
