9. Fake dating or arranged marriage?

Arranged marriage 100%, in part because I much enjoy historical fiction, with all its juicy drama about kings and queens, and also because I like the themes the concept plays with.

For me, a good arranged marriage story is all about the wider stakes, for my preference political but societal and interpersonal can work well too, that prevent the spouses from breaking it off and how they navigate being tied to each other and find if not love at least an amicable status quo.

This is what I'm going for with the JayWillow arranged marriage in augur AU, this idea that as much as they would rather date anything else the alliance between RiverClan and ThunderClan is too precious to throw away and thus they need to make it work in some way, even if not romantically. (But it will end romantically because I'm a sap and I already have a pretty nice roadmap of how I want to get there.)

Jayfeather and Willowshine for the hypokits?

A big ol four kit litter for these two~ Two made it to Warriorship, one passed in their apprentice-hood and the one died as a kit. Two molly warriors, the kit is a Tom and the apprentice is a Jack!

Honestly- I’m having a hard time thinking of a story for how Jay and Willow hooked up. A rivalry between the two, with a slight mutual respect (tho the rivalry is very much a big factor). Maybe romance blossoms from their respect to one another- or it was just a one night thing- who knows? I don’t!

But these four were the result, Comfreykit, Thymekit, Juniperkit, aaand Lavenderkit. I gave them herby type names. Since both parents are Medicine Cats. How did Willowshine explain her litter? Maybe she told the Clan she found them, or if they clocked onto her having kits, she was vouched for by Mothwing to keep her position.

She didn’t tell them Jayfeather was the father- which he kind of realizes it when he hears about the litter and how another Medicine Cat had kits/or Mothwing informed him that Willowshine had found a litter of kits- whoopsie he’s just like Mama. Uhh let’s say the litter was born… post OoTS? Either way he doesn’t get… much time to spend with his kits except for Gatherings. Though he still gets updates from Willow (who makes sure he knows how well they’re doing in RicerClan frequently- gosh darn Willow stop being full of yourself I swear to-)

Now Juniperkit doesn’t make it long, I’d say he just had trouble suckling, or was just born weaker then his siblings. Lavenderpaw was a skilled swimmer, but probably not the brightest star in the sky. Dove into flood waters to try and help some elders, and the poor apprentice just never resurfaced after they were taken under a few too many times.

Now Comfreynose is a dry paw- she just can’t stand the water, can’t put her paws in it or anything. Which she gets from Daddy unfortunately. Which is fine, she can navigate the lands far better then her sister who ribs her for the lack of swimming. Heck it’s possible the passing of Lavenderpaw made her more wary to enter the water actually. Pretty good at finding out where land prey is- she had to be to prove she didn’t have to get in the water to be a good RiverClan warrior.

Thyme stripe is your run of the mil RiverClan cat, and probably takes more so after her mother. Though the fact she doesn’t know her dad and the potential fact that she knows Willowshine is her mother does have her… feeling out out? She might’ve wanted to be a Med Cat so she could be closer to Willow- but it was shut down by Mistystar. But she still volunteers to help in the Den, and does try to investigate the mystery of who her dad is. If she finds out it’s Jayfeather I’d kind of be surprised tbh, but Y’know let’s throw her a bone and say maybe she does find out- and is swiftly told to keep that a secret because if that gets out then hoo boy that won’t be a good scene.

Making these four were… difficult because there isn’t that many genetically accurate options other then grey tabbies and just plain grey cats. So I tried to use different shades and stripe length/widths.

- also just a side note I was looking at Willowshine’s page and they killed her off?? That’s kind of upsetting, and I’m guessing they killed her to give Mothwing another apprentice which stinks. Just let RiverClan have three Med Cats, you did it with ThunderClan!

But tbh I’d probably just do it for River and not Thunder because well I wouldn’t make Jay be a Med Cat nor Alder, and give Leafpool Twigbranch who showed genuine interest in it. Stop forcing cats to be Med Cats I hate it so much, let cats want to be Med Cats

What if we flipped the script on the whole medicine cats can't have kits rule? What if Micah and Mothflight's four kits that went to one clan each established dynasties of medicine cats in each clan? What if to keep the purity of the bloodline these four lineages keep intermarrying? What if these political marriages serve to seal alliances between clans?

(Yes, I know I have to do insane mental gymnastics to justify how on Earth the grandson of a former kittypet can belong to one of these prestigious lineages. No, I have no idea how I can possibly do it.)

I'd like to hear Lynxx's list of favorite/unfavorite cats, even a brief one is fine.

It’s been ages since I’ve read most of the books, so these are mostly characters I’ve built up in my head or I think they’ve got a lot of potential going for them. They’re also sorted in no particular order.

The Magpie Hoard

Willowshine - I don’t know why I like her. I just like her. ...And I lowkey ship Jaywillow so shhhhh…… (“they’re hot together” is my only reasoning and I do not blame you for not liking this ship whatsoever)

Sunstrike - The obligatory background character that one’s unreasonably attached to. She’s got a cool name and a pretty design and that’s all that’s going for her.

Needletail - Jerkass Has A Point and Jerk With A Heart Of Gold. Man, I loved her arc. I do wish that Rowanstar, Crowfrost, and Tawnypelt actually listened to the reasonable arguments she made and calmly explained where she’s factually wrong instead of just escalating it to a shouting match and eventually causing the clan’s Deadliest Teen Rebellion.

Clear Sky/Skystar - Clear Sky is a great character concept, y’all are just uptight goody-goodies. In adult fiction, Villain Protagonists aren’t unheard of, and Morally Gray Protagonists are everywhere. While Warriors is a series for preteens, stories aimed at them can and should be able to explore topics like these on their level to provoke thought and discuss what makes a villain or fallen hero redeemable. Clear Sky had an enormous amount of potential as being a fallen hero who eventually redeems himself and pays penance for his actions, eventually leading to a great legacy. It’s just this is freaking Warrior Cats and the Erins are drunk at 1PM, so his character handling was Erin Hunter Standard Bad.

The Garbage Can (do you realize how far I had to stretch my boundaries of “characters I don’t like”?)

Onestar - Conflict arises in Warriors by characters being morons, assholes, or moronic assholes. You’re way more likely to be either of the last two if you’re a leader and that’s exemplified best in Onestar. With AVoS fresh in my mind, he’s exceedingly irrational in how he goes about defending his clan from outside threats. It’s been joked to hell and back how Tallstar picked him to maintain a friendly relationship with Thunderclan, then proceeds to treat Thunderclan with disdain. And then he dies in AVoS. I literally muttered, “Not the dickhead!”

Tigerheartstar - I don’t know why I don’t like this pathetic excuse for love interest material, but great job, Erin Hunter Team, for making a love interest so detestable, I still hate him six years later! Here’s to you staying there once I get around to rereading this monolith of a disaster.

what is the augar au ?

Augur AU is the tag I use for the alternate universe explored in to Aaron and his sons. The core concept is to flip the script on the whole medicine cats can't have kits thing. Now they must have kits, because the position is hereditary.

Each Clan has a lineage of medicine cats (called augurs) who trace their ancestry back to one of Moth Flight's kits. Only patricians (cats who have an augur parent or grandparent) are allowed to become augurs to preserve the lineage. They also intermarry between each other regularly, as a means to create political alliance, so they work as royalty of sorts.

The plot of the series centers around the politics of ThunderClan at the time of Po3. Originally, Crowfeather, the son of WindClan's matriarch (matriarch/patriarch being a title conferred upon the senior augur of each Clan) Ashfoot, had been arranged to marry Leafpool, the daughter of ThunderClan's matriarch Sandstorm, and the couple was supposed to send one of their kits back to train under Ashfoot. However, because Onestar worried his continued diplomatic ties with ThunderClan would weaken his position, this part of the deal was called off.

Sandstorm thus decided that this was as good a time as any to try and repair relationships with RiverClan, who by virtue of being a whole lake away are no longer really rivals with ThunderClan. A marriage is arranged between Willowpaw, the only daughter of the RiverClan matriarch, Leopardsun, and Leafpool's son Jaypaw.

Thus we arrive at the core appeal of the AU: JayWillow arranged marriage love story.

i'm like. god. i'm so obsessed. you're giving me jaywillow AND fernivy in one (one!!) au! i'm so excited. i didn't know i needed riverclan ivypool in my life but i absolutely did.

please share some stuff about augur au

I'm still thinking so much about the fanart @mallowstep did for doomed to repeat it, so I'll touch on one of my weirdest obsessions: shoving the concept of Jayfeather as Ivypool and Dovewing's dad into every AU where he has kits.

(Under the cut for spoilers. Also, details are subject to change until I post the stories where all this actually happens. Don't think they will though.)

So! After Jayfeather and Willowshine do the whole learning to get along and finding love in their arranged marriage thing, the next step is obviously to have kits.

Jay is nervous about the whole thing. In general, I see Jay being very much the type who's not quite sure if he even wants children. Like he'll adore them once they're born and he gets attached, even if it isn't quite immediate, but he's hesitant. The prospect is scary and I feel he'd doubt his ability to be a father. But they need to produce an heir to keep that bloodline going, so to hell with his reservations.

(They still don't do it like immediately after he gets his full name or anything though. He and Willow can afford to wait. They're young and Leopardsun isn't like at death's door or anything just yet. Willow is more excited about the prospect of kits and she's the main push for him to give it a try.)

So Dove and Ivy are born... somewhere around OotS times or at the latest around the timeskip between OotS and AVoS. The prophecy plot has been deleted because it adds unnecessary complications to my finding love in an arranged marriage story, so I don't need them to be born in their canon times.

But anyway, sometime around OotS times they're born and while there is no drought to make her complications worse, Leopard still dies from her diabetes. But as one of her last actions as the RiverClan matriarch she decides that instead of honoring their obligations in the marriage negotiations that brought Jay to RiverClan and giving one of the girls to be Leafpool's apprentice, they're just going to train both as augurs and send one to ShadowClan to be Flametail's wife.

There's a whole mess to sort through from this because like. On the one hand, wow, way to cause a diplomatic incident with ThunderClan and leaving Willowshine (LEOPARDSUN'S DAUGHTER, MAY I REMIND Y'ALL!) to clean up the mess after your death. But also like, it's kind of relieving for Jay and Willow. If both become augur apprentices it means they can take a more active role in raising them after they leave the nursery. And the fact one is being sent to ShadowClan means they'll be closer to her instead of sending her all the way to the other side of the lake.

So, to sort out the diplomatic incident, they decide on having Ivykit take on a ThunderClan mate and swear this time around they will send a child back. The lucky chosen is Lionblaze and Honeyfern's own son, Fernkit. Typically this is not permissible on account that they're parallel cousins rather than cross cousins, however since the Clan's kinship system considers changing clans to break previous kinship ties, it's allowed.

So, the girls are apprenticed and they live a happy life training under their parents until they're one year old. I see Dovepaw being particularly close with her father. Autistic Jayfeather and autistic Dovewing are two headcanons near and dear to my heart and I see them relating very strongly in their experiences. I'm thinking particularly of what @mashfur did with his excellent fic about Dove and Jay friendship just. Different. Because no powers and all.

ANYWAY. The girls turn one year old and it's time for the weddings!

Dovepaw goes to live with Flametail on ShadowClan and finish the second half of her apprenticeship under Littlecloud. She takes one look at Tigerheart and goes "him". Flametail's not bothered by it, my man's too aroace to want a wife anyway. So, we get Tigerdove pretending like their kits, Shadowsight, Lightleap, and Pouncestep, are Flametail's.

Fernsong in contrast was trained as a ThunderClan warrior through and through and he comes to live in RiverClan. They have a little wedding party in ThunderClan camp which because it's not on a half-moon, Jay and Ivy both get to attend. Jay gets emotional about his childhood home and seeing his siblings and all. Ivy is super excited to know more about her heritage.

All around a happy family time. Well. At least until Darktail comes in and takes over ShadowClan and RiverClan camps. But that's a story for another time. ;3
