Dispatched Love
Request: Reader had known Jay since she’d first started as a dispatcher for Chicago. It wasn’t long until she’d developed a crush on the older man. She didn’t say anything since she realized he was dating Erin but then she left. She left and Jay got kidnapped; reader heard it over the radio. Hank texted her to say they’d found him and she left her job without saying anything and sped to the hospital. When she saw the blonde detective in the waiting room they got into a fight and reader punched her. She refused to leave the hospital until Jay woke up and laid in bed with him the entire time. When he woke up, in the heat of the moment her lips were on his in a moment.

When you moved back to Chicago you really didn't know anyone besides Hank Voight considering he was your uncle and he had raised you for most of your life. You had gone away for college and had just recently come back to Chicago.
You had been job hunting for a while but nothing had interested you or if you did find something they weren't hiring. You really wanted to be a 911 dispatcher but each time you tried to apply something always came up so you just gave up. Hank had come up to you one day saying he had a surprise for you and that he wanted you to come to supper and of course you accepted, you loved your uncle.
It was currently Thursday night when you went over to his house for supper. You drove over there and when you got into the driveway you parked and killed the engine. You got out and walked to the door and knocked and waited then the door finally opened.
"Hey! Come on in!" Hank said and you smiled and walked in.
"Hey, Uncle Hank." You said and hugged him and you returned it.
"I'm glad you could make it." He said as he let go of you.
"I was doing anything really. I was just thinking about opening a bottle of wine and sitting in front of the TV and ordering a pizza." You said and you watched his face fall.
"You know you're always welcome over here." He said and you nodded.
"Of course I do but I don't want to inconvenience you." You told him and he shook his head and you both began walking into the living room.
"Nonsense. Supper will be ready in 10 minutes." He said and you nodded. You both sat on the couch.
"You said that you had a surprise." You told him and he nodded.
"I got you a job at the 911 dispatch center." He said taking a drink of the beer that he had on the table.
"Wait. Seriously?" You asked with a look of shock on your face and you watched him nodded "How?" You asked.
"I know someone who owed me a favor." He said and you practically tackled him into a hug.
"Thank you." You said and he hugged you back.
"No need to thank me, kid. I know how much you wanted it." He said and then you both released each other. Dinner was ready and you both ate in a comfortable peace. You went home happy and grateful for an awesome uncle.

When you weren't working you were hanging out at the police station and visiting your uncle. You had made fast friends with everyone in Intelligence including none other than Jay Halstead. You had developed feelings for him. He was always so nice to you when you came in and if you needed something while there he would get it for you. But he was with Erin Lindsay so you didn't pursue your feelings. What you didn't know was that he had feelings for you too.
"Hey, Y/N. How's it going?" Jay asked when you walked into the bullpen. You smiled at him.
"I'm good. Just been working." You said as you walked over to him.
"How's it going?" He asked truly interested and you loved that. He had been sitting on the edge of his desk.
"It's going well. I'm doing what I've always wanted to do." You said and he smiled but then Erin walked over and slung her arm over his shoulder.
"Hey, Y/N." She said and then turned and kissed Jay on the cheek.
"Hey, Erin." You said with a polite smile on your face.
You really didn't like Erin she gave off a vibe that just didn't sit well with you, even if she was part of your family. She would always pop into conversations and still him away even if it was just a simple friendly conversation. So you ended up steering clear of her and him and started to visit less often. You hated doing it but that didn't stop your feelings from forming.
"What are you doing here?" She asked turning to you.
"I was actually waiting for Uncle Hank." You said just being in her presence was awkward and not pleasant. "You know I actually need to go. I have work in a few hours. Jay, can you tell him I stopped by and I'll get into contact with him later?" You asked and Jay nodded and then you left saying bye to Trudy on the way out.
You didn't return to the station after that day so you didn't know what had happened. Your love for Jay still grew stronger. You met everyone at Molly's a few nights but you steered clear of Jay and Erin no matter how it hurt.
One day Jay had shown up to you as you were leaving work. This surprised you. "Jay, hi." You said a little confused.
"Hey, Erin left." Jay said and you didn't say anything but you wore a shocked expression.
"I'm sorry, Jay. I know how much it must hurt." You said and then pulled him into a hug which he returned.
"Thank you, Y/N." He said and you both talked for a while before you both left but not before exchanging numbers.

It had been months since Erin had left and you hoped she didn't come back. You and Jay had been texting but never met up due to working hours. You wanted to but never found the right time. Sometimes it would go on for weeks and sometimes it would stop and you understood. You both had demanding jobs.
You were at work when tragedy struck. You had taken a 911 call from a women. She claimed that she saw someone, a male, matching Jay's description and your heart dropped.
You had texted Hank but he said that he didn't know anything and he would let you know. It had been a few hours so when you took your break you had called him.
"Hey, have you heard anything?" You asked him and heard him sigh.
"I'm not supposed to be telling you this but we're close to finding him, we think. You have to believe that we will." Hank said and you closed your eyes.
"I believe you. I love you Uncle Hank." You said and opened your eyes.
"I love you too kid. Everyone including Erin is here helping." He said and your blood ran cold. You didn't say anything else just hung up the phone and got back to work.
You didn't contact him for weeks or even visit them. You couldn't you hated the thought of seeing her face.

Going into 3 weeks of Jay missing you had gotten a text from Hank.
Uncle Hank: We found him. We're going to med.
You just stared at your phone you couldn't believe it. You got up and grabbed your stuff and headed out of work. Your boss was going to stop you but they knew what was going on so they just let you go.
When you got to med you walked right into the waiting room to Hank. He saw you coming and he opened your arms and walked into them fully closing the hug. "Where did you find him?" You asked him and as you broke apart from the hug.
"We found him in a warehouse locked to a pole and he was beaten pretty badly. He's in surgery now." Hank had told you. All of Intelligence didn't care that you knew but that didn't sit well with Erin and it showed.
"Why are you telling her? She's not supposed to know anything." Erin said and you turned to look at her.
"I thought you left. Why are you back?" You asked her maybe a little bit rudely.
"I heard that he was kidnapped and I came back to help look." She said and you didn't quite believe her so you scoffed.
"If you cared for him so much then you wouldn't have left him. You broke his heat. Now all of a sudden you're back trying to win it?" You asked her and she had an offended look on her face but you didn't care. You didn't know when you had stepped closer to her but at some point you had.
"What? It's not like you're dating him or anything." She said and rolled her eyes.
"You're a bitch you know that." You said with a look of disgust on your face.
"What did you just call me?" She asked
"A bitch. I called you a bitch." You told her and the next thing you knew you were getting punched in the nose and it started bleeding. You stumbled back into Hank but what she didn't know was that when you get mad you go into fighting mode. You took one swing at her and she stumbled and into a wall. Before it could get any further Connor Rhodes came into the waiting room to say that he was out of surgery and only one person was allowed to be with them while he recovered, Everyone agreed that you should be the one, Erin was offended but you really didn't care.
When you walked to his room with Connor. He had stopped and checked you out and cleaned you up before continuing on. "Hey if any swelling occurs call me." He said and you nodded and then turned to him when you reached the door.
"Thank you, Connor." You said and he smiled and nodded. You walked into the room and waited.
Waiting can be a horrible thing at times. Waiting gave you time to think and those thoughts could be good or bad. Jay had been unconscious while you were there and you refused to leave his side. He had visitors come and Erin surprisingly didn't show her face. Hank visited often it was to check up on you and to see if any changes happened with him.
"Hey, Sweetheart. Any changes?" He asked and you shook your head and he sighed.
"Nothing new but that's a good thing. That just means that he isn't getting worse." You said and he nodded.
"You need to go home. You're probably missing a lot of work." He said and you shook your head.
"I had the next few days off since I work late nights. I'm not leaving him." You said and he nodded and left it at that.
"Text me if anything changes." He said and you nodded.
"You got it." You said never leaving your eyes off of him.
It took a total of 2 days for Jay to wake up. You had fallen asleep in a chair next to his bed. He groaned and started moving and that is what woke you up. You jumped up and before you knew it, your lips were on his. What you didn't expect was to from him to kiss you back. You only broke apart when you needed air. He looked at you suprised.
"I'm sorry. I just really wanted to do that. For awhile now. I should go." You rambled but he grabbed your hand and pulled you back and crashed his lips back onto yours, this time it was turn to be surprised but kissed back. You pulled apart again when air was needed.
"You don't know how long I've wanted to do that." He said and you smiled and you sat down.
"Really?" You asked and he nodded his head.
"Really. Y/N I fell in love with you when Hank first introduced the Intelligence group to you. Yea I was with Erin but we were already going out of the relationship." He said and you smiled.
"I've had a crush on you when Hank introduced me to you and then it slowly turned into love." You said and smiled.
"Well would you like to go out with me on a date?" He asked and you nodded your head.
"I would love that." You said and you both smiled at each other. You didn't know if you ever would love again but Jay Halstead just proved that you could. You loved each other and nothing was going to change that.

Okay okay, y'all. Imagine Jay during this.
He knew neither of his parents were gonna show up, and Will was in New York, so maybe Jay didn't even tell him about it. He didn't wanna distract from med school. But one of Jay's friends (probably Mouse, but idk if they went through basic training together or just deployment, but it also sounds like a pretty Mouse thing to do) calls Will in advance.
Jay thinks he'll just have to stand there at attention and listen as most of his fellow soldiers reunite with family until a kind person taps him out with a look of sympathy or, worse, pity. He's not looking forward to it. At all. Sure, it means he completed basic training, but it's not much more.
Will's there. He was grinding even harder at school the past week or two so he'd have less to worry about while he missed. He has enough unused absences to miss a few days. (Ngl I'm applying community college knowledge to ivy league medical school so I don't actually know the ins and out of missing a few days of classes.) But he's not gonna miss this.
He's not shocked when he's waiting there as family members of everyone else arrive, and his parents are nowhere to be seen. He hadn’t been sure if he was going to try staying with them, but he's sure it's not a good idea now. He would not keep quiet about them missing this. Hell, he'd love to go tell dad off about it anyway. But that's not what he'd want to come home from, so he's not gonna stress Jay out. See, he can, in fact, take the high road.
So once the family side of the field (or room?) is free to go tap out their loved one, Will silently makes his way over to stand in front of Jay, whose face impressively shows no indication of whether or not he can feel someone standing there, and knocks on his chest lightly. Jay's arms relax as he opens his eyes, and the default appreciative half smile he was gonna give a stranger only appears as a flicker before excited shock takes over.
Will grins and pulls him into a tight hug. He's not actually thrilled about his little brother wanting to ship out and risk his life, but that'll never stop him from being anything but proud of him.

If I had a nickel for every blue eyes man, in a series, whose character arch was destroyed by shipping (canon and not), reducing him to the hot guy™️ who serves only as the main love interest in the group, I'd have two nickels. Which is not a lot, but I'm mad it happened twice.
And they both start with J
Like LEAVE THEM ALONE, OMG!
Their characters would have been so much better off without forcing them into relationships for fanservice.

Changes
Summary: When Lyla’s world is turned upside down, she turns to harmful and unhealthy coping methods.
TW: Self Harm, Alcohol, Substance Abuse, Vaping, Blood, Sexual Assault, Anxiety, Swearing, Awful Writing

Note: Hi! This is the first fanfic I’ve ever posted so it’s kinda bad but oh well lol I hope you like it (:
Lyla woke up in a cold sweat, desperately gasping for air. She sprung up in her bed, clutching her blanket like a lifeline that would help her escape. Obviously, it didn’t work. She told herself to take deep breaths, in and out slowly, and after what felt like forever, her breathing slowed, heart following suit.
She checked the time, groaning softly in annoyance as it was only 2:57 in the morning. She rested her head against her headboard, allowing the tears she felt forming to fall. It was her fault. It wouldn’t have happened if she would’ve just stayed home.
It was supposed to be fun. She was supposed to have a good time, enjoying herself, her brothers not knowing a thing. Of course, Jay and Will would never let Lyla go to a party, but they didn’t have to know, right? It would be fine. Her and her best friend Caleb would sneak away, have a drink or two, then Lyla would make it home before Jay and Will did, since they had to work late anyway. She’d be fine, besides, if anything went wrong, Cal would be there for her.
Well, that’s what Lyla thought, anyway. She had known, trusted, and loved Cal in a platonic way since they were little. They did everything together. They told each other everything. They shared their fears, their insecurities, the problems they each faced as teenagers. They trusted each other. She trusted Cal, until that trust was broken in a way Lyla never imagined possible. Her best friend betrayed her, leaving her to pick up the pieces.
She reached over for the hydro flask on her nightstand and pulled up the straw. She hesitated for a second, knowing she’d regret it later, but took a large sip of the alcohol she put inside, having stolen it from her brothers. It helped her fall asleep, even if it didn’t keep her asleep. She hadn’t been sleeping well since the party. She just wanted to sleep, so badly.
She put her water bottle back on her desk, resting her head on her pillow. What would Jay and Will think, she thought, if they knew what she was doing to herself? If they knew what Cal did to her? She couldn’t tell them, she couldn’t see the look of disappointment on their faces. She couldn’t and she wouldn’t.
After a while she gave up on trying to go to sleep. When she saw that it was only 3:14, she groaned in annoyance and stared up at her ceiling. She thought about how things would be different if she didn’t go to that party. If she would have just listened to Jay and Will, everything would be fine. Why couldn’t she just listen?
Her heart began to race as guilt presented itself. She sat up and put her head in her hands, tugging roughly at her hair as if that would help. When it didn’t and the guilt got worse, she grabbed her phone from her night stand. She then jumped off of her bed and rushed to her bathroom, making sure the door didn’t slam, and locked her door.
She turned on the light and put her hands on the counter, looking at herself in the mirror. She knew she’d feel guilty later, but she told herself it’s what she needed to do, because she’d feel fine now, and the pills would help later. She hesitated for a moment longer, and then grabbed her phone. With shaky hands she removed her phone case, revealing the blade she kept inside.
She grabbed the blade and looked at it for a moment, considering if this would be a good idea. She shook her head as if to shake away those thoughts and carefully set the blade on the counter. She then rolled up the sleeve of her hoodie, revealing the already cut and scarred arm. She took a deep breath, grabbed the blade and put it to her arm. She began cutting, watching as the blade pierced her skin, blood pooling around the blade. She removed the blade, and when the guilt still resided, she made another cut. Guilt finally gone, she rolled her sleeve down, blood trickling down her arm, and made sure no blood was on the ground. After cleaning what was on the ground, she put her blade and phone case back, turned off her light and exited the bathroom.
She laid back down on her bed, putting her phone on her night stand, and pulled her blanket around her. Somehow, and she had no idea how, she managed to fall asleep.

Lyla’s somewhat peaceful slumber was interrupted by a knock on her door, making her jump.
“Lyla, it’s 6:00.” Jay announced, and Lyla rubbed her eyes. When she didn’t answer, he knocked again.
“Don’t make me come in there.”
“Okay, okay, I’m up!” Lyla pulled the covers off and hopped out of bed. She thought about making her bed, but she decided against it. She chose an outfit- a dark colored long sleeved shirt, gray leggings and her favorite black hoodie, and made her way to her bathroom. She washed her face, brushed her hair and teeth, and began getting dressed.
Everything was fine, until she changed her shirt, and she remembered what she had done to herself earlier that morning. The guilt began coming back and tears began to form in her eyes. Why couldn’t she just keep clean? Why didn’t she just tell Jay and Will? Why didn’t she stay home in the first place?
She quickly put her shirt on and rolled up her sleeves. She then made her way out of the bathroom and grabbed her book bag. She opened the smaller pocket in the front and began searching around with her hands, until she found her vape. She knew this would make her feel guilty, so she closed her book bag and moved to her bed. She grabbed her pillow and slowly grabbed the bottle of pills she hid, making sure not to shake them. She then moved to her window, opened it, and hit her vape a few times. She closed her window and made her way to her bathroom, vape still in hand. She closed her door and poured one onto her hand. She swallowed it, without water, and placed the bottle on the counter, looking at herself in the mirror. She hated herself for this, but she couldn’t tell Jay or Will.
It was a constant cycle, drink alcohol to sleep, cut to get rid of the guilt from drinking, vape to get rid of the guilt from cutting, pop pills to get rid of the guilt from vaping, cut to get rid of the guilt from popping pills. It started to drive her crazy, but she couldn’t stop. She wanted to, but it was the only thing that helped her with the triggers, the stress, and the guilt for not listening to her brothers.
She felt a tear fall, and she wiped it away quickly. She put the lid back on the bottle of pills and made her way out of the bathroom. She quietly put her pills back in her pillow case and decided to make her bed, because she knew Jay and Will were beginning to catch on. She didn’t want them searching her room, because she knew she'd get in so much trouble. She then put her vape back in her book bag and slung her book bag over her shoulder. She grabbed her phone and ear buds from her night stand, deciding to leave her hydro flask. She put her hair up in a messy bun as she checked the time-6:26, turned her light off and exited her bedroom.
“Good morning.” Jay greeted as Lyla made her way down the stairs. She made her way to the island and took a seat as Jay made breakfast.
“Morning.” Lyla mumbled, opening her phone and scrolling through Instagram.
“Someone’s grumpy.” Will retorted as he entered the room, taking a seat next to Lyla, who just rolled her eyes at the comment. They sat there, a somewhat comfortable silence falling over them, until Will spoke up.
“You okay?” Will asked, showing concern for his sister. Jay and Will noticed changes in Lyla’s attitude and noticed she had become distant.
“Yeah.” Lyla replied, keeping her focus on her phone.
“Are you sure?” Jay butted in, setting a plate of pancakes in front of his sister, “You’ve been acting a little different.”
“Yeah, I’m fine.” Lyla and her brothers knew she was lying through her teeth, but she didn’t care. Jay and Will shared a look.
“Hey,” Will started, his voice soft, “You know you can talk to us if something’s wrong, right?”
“Yep, but like I said, I’m fine.” Lyla was starting to get irritated, the pills not having kicked in yet.
“Lyla, if something’s going on we just wanna-”
Lyla slammed her phone down, making Jay and Will jump.
“I said I’m fine! How many times do I have to tell you guys? Just leave me alone!” She grabbed her phone and air-pods, jumped off the stool and made her way to the front door, despite how early it was.
“You’re not gonna eat?” Jay asked, still shocked that Lyla had just snapped.
“I’m not hungry!” She yelled as she slammed the door, leaving her brothers dumbfounded.
“That went well.” Will remarked, still shocked Lyla had reacted that way.
“Yep.” Jay replied as he sat down next to his older brother, worry for his sister growing by the second.

Lyla made her way to the park, shocked at the way she had just acted.
She had never, ever yelled at Jay or Will like that, and it scared her.
She threw her book bag on the picnic table and pulled her vape out. She closed her book bag and made her way over to the swings, sitting down on one and placing her bag on another.
She put her air-pods in at full volume and hit the vape a few times, trying to block out the world and what had just happened. When that didn’t work, she let the tears fall.
She was angry at herself for the way she had just acted. She knew her brothers were just trying to figure out what was wrong so they could help her. She was beyond pissed and upset, because she was taking out the anger she felt for herself on her brothers.
After a while, she stopped crying and she felt the pills kick in. She checked the time and saw that it was 7:15, which was the time she’d normally leave. She hopped off her swing, put her vape in her back pocket and grabbed her backpack, slinging it over her shoulder. She slowly walked to school, knowing she’d hate herself even more later.
Lyla was sitting in her third hour class, drawing on her desk, not even paying attention to what was going on. Unfortunately for her, the pill was starting to wear off.

“Mr. Doherty?” The school’s secretary, Mrs. Lewis, called over the intercom. Lyla didn’t think anything of it, because the secretary called all of the teachers frequently.
“Yes?” Mr. Doherty replied.
“Could you send Lyla Halstead to the office?” This obviously caught Lyla’s attention. She looked up at her teacher, confused.
“Yes. She’ll be right there.”
“Alright. Thank you.” Mrs. Lewis hung up, and Lyla made her way to the classroom door.
“Do you know what they need you for?” Mr. Doherty inquired as Lyla reached the door.
Lyla looked towards her teacher, “No.” Then, she opened the door and left, confused as to why she was being called down to the office.
When she got in there, the principal, Mr. Kramer, was waiting for her, which scared her.
“Is everything okay?” Lyla asked, worried and confused at the same time.
“Yeah, everything’s okay.” Mr. Kramer started, which eased Lyla’s worries a bit. Mr. Kramer continued, “We just need you to get your book bag.”
“Am I being signed out?” Lyla inquired, confused as to why they would need her book bag. She wasn't sure this was the case, because they would've told her teacher over the intercom.
“Not exactly.” Mr. Kramer stated, “Just get your bag and we’ll go from there.”
“Okay.” Lyla replied, still very confused, and left the office to go get her book bag as instructed. She made it to her locker, put her combination in, and grabbed her book bag, trying to think of a reason they would need her bag. Then, she closed her locker, making sure it was locked, and made her way back to the office.
Once she got in there, she handed Mr. Kramer her backpack.
“Have a seat, Lyla.” Mr. Kramer instructed, and Lyla did so.
Lyla watched as Mr. Kramer opened her bag and began searching. She didn’t say a word, still confused, and it wasn’t until he opened the small pocket that it hit her-her vape.
Lyla had been careful, or so she thought. She rarely vaped at school unless it was outside, and she didn't think anyone would've seen her. Even if it wasn't the vape he was looking for, he'd find it now, but was that what he was looking for in the first place?
The latter was revealed to her when Mr. Kramer stopped searching and pulled out her vape. At that moment, she was very glad she didn’t bring her hydro flask.
Mr. Kramer sighed and turned to look at Mrs. Lewis, showing her the vape. She too sighed, surprised that Lyla would ever do such a thing.
“I’ll call her brother.” Mrs. Lewis stated and picked up the phone. Mr. Kramer turned back to Lyla, who had a look of guilt on her face.
“Go get the rest of your homework for the week.” Mr. Kramer instructed, and Lyla stood up and left the office.
The whole time, she was pissed, at herself, at whoever told on her, because that’s what had to have happened. She was just pissed at the world in general. What would Jay and Will think? This thought made her want to cry, because she knew they’d be livid and disappointed in her. How would they be able to trust her? She felt so, so guilty about everything, and it was stressing her out beyond belief.
Once she got her stuff from Mr. Doherty’s and her homework from the rest of her teachers, she grabbed the books and notebooks necessary for her work from her locker and made her way back to the office, putting her stuff in her book bag. She sat down in the seat, leg bouncing in anticipation.
Usually, she would’ve hoped it wasn’t Jay that showed up, but this time, she hoped it wouldn’t be Will that showed up, because first, doctors and vapes are like oil and water and second, the looks of disappointment she was sure he’d give her would destroy her even more. She couldn’t do that.
Unfortunately for Lyla, when the office door opened, it was Will that walked in and not Jay. He immediately looked to Lyla, who was staring at the floor.
“Mr. Halstead, please have a seat.” Mr. Kramer instructed.
“Please, call me Will.” Will started as he took a seat next to Lyla, “What’s this about?” Mr. Kramer stood next to Mrs. Lewis, clearing his throat, “Well, a student came to my office this morning stating they had seen your sister vaping. We didn’t believe it until, well, we found this in her bag.” Mr. Kramer pulled out the vape, and Lyla looked up for a split second to read Will’s face. His features went from one of surprise to anger, and when he looked at her, she regretted looking up.
“Wanna explain yourself?” Will asked, a tinge of anger present in his voice. Lyla just stayed silent, returning her gaze to the ground, knowing he was more angry than he seemed.
Will sighed and looked back at Mr. Kramer, “What kind of punishment is she looking at?”
“She’s being suspended for the rest of the week and she’ll have one day of in school suspension.” Mr. Kramer said, and Will ran a hand down his face, disappointed and shocked Lyla would do this, still angry of course. Actually, angry would probably be an understatement.
“Alright. Is there anything you need me to sign?”
“You just need to sign her out.”
Lyla stayed seated as Will stood up and signed her out.
Once finished, Will turned to Lyla, “Let’s go.” Lyla got up and walked out of the door.
Before Will left, he turned to Mr. Kramer, “I’m sorry about this. I don’t know what’s gotten into her. I can assure you this will not happen again.”
“I’m sure it won’t. She’s a good kid. Don’t be too hard on her.” Will nodded his head, then followed Lyla out to his car.
Before Lyla made it outside, the bell rang, and students flocked out of the classrooms. She caught a glimpse of Cal, who actually waved at her as if nothing had happened at the party, and it made her want to throw up. She put her now shaking hands in her pockets as she made it to Will’s car, sitting in the backseat so she’d be as far away from him as possible.
Lyla had just buckled her seat belt when Will entered the driver’s seat and slammed the door.
“What the fuck Lyla? A vape? Really?” Will yelled, turning the car on and buckling his seat belt. Lyla just acted unfazed, because after what she had just seen with Cal, she knew she would crack, especially now that the pills were wearing off. She couldn’t do that, not right now.
Will turned around to face Lyla, “I’m so disappointed in you, Lyla. I didn’t think you could stoop this fucking low.” Then, Will turned around and began driving, trying his hardest not to drive like a mad man.
Lyla tried to act unfazed, but those words kept echoing through her head. “I didn’t think you could stoop this fucking low. I didn’t think you could stoop this fucking low. I didn’t think you could stoop this fucking low.” Her heart began to race and she felt like she was going to cry, but she couldn’t do that, she couldn’t give in. She needed to calm down, and the only thing that would calm her was cutting, and she couldn’t do that right now, not in Will’s car.
“I didn’t think you could stoop this fucking low.” She began to pick at her thumbnail with her index finger, something she did when she was stressed. Even though she was glad she didn’t bring her hydro flask, she kind of wished she did.
“I didn’t think you could stoop this fucking low.” She wanted the words to go away, she needed them to. Although she tried to stay calm, she began to breathe harder.
“Do you know how fucking dangerous vaping is?” Will yelled, not aware of how Lyla was feeling at all, “You’re so lucky I don’t take you to med to get checked out right now. And don’t think I’m not telling Jay about this.”
As Will kept ranting, Lyla thought about the look Jay would give her when he found out, how he’d yell at her as well. She then thought about Hailey. They’d both be so disappointed in her, for everything.
“I didn’t think you could stoop this fucking low.”
She pulled her knees to her chest as best she could with the seat belt in the way and buried her head in her knees. She thought of the party, of what Cal had done to her. She couldn’t handle the rush of memories, Will yelling, the looks she imagined Hailey and Jay would give her. She started silently crying, wishing Will would shut the fuck up and these images memories and words would leave her head.
“Out of all the things you could have possibly done, you chose to vape? Really?”
“Please stop.” Lyla begged softly, but Will couldn’t hear her. She felt like an object, like she didn’t matter to anyone. She felt like she couldn’t carry this weight anymore. She started to shake slightly as she wrapped her arms around her legs as tightly as she could and put her hands in her hair, tugging softly.
“Do you know how many kids your age I’ve seen in the ED because of vaping? Do you?” Lyla whimpered softly. Will looked in the rear-view mirror and sighed.
“Lyla-” Will’s voice became softer, kinder. He took a breath, “I’m sorry.” When Lyla didn't say anything, Will guessed it wasn’t just the vape that had been bothering her.
Will sighed, “Lyla, can you please tell me what’s going on?”
“No.” Lyla replied through tears, and it broke Will’s heart.
“Please? I just wanna help you.”
“I said no!” She took her hands out of her hair and gripped her arms, slightly digging into her cuts through her thick sleeves. Will sighed and just continued driving, knowing if he kept pushing she’d become too distressed and likely have a panic attack.
Lyla felt like she was going to explode. She just needed to make it to her bathroom.
She wished the words, images and thoughts would just leave, just until she was alone. She couldn’t take it. For the first time, she felt like giving up.
After what felt like hours, Lyla felt the car come to a stop. She looked up to see that they were finally at their house. She unbuckled her seatbelt, grabbed her book bag and exited the car. She waited for Will to unlock the door, and after he did so, she rushed to her room.
“Lyla-” Will tried to talk to her, but she was already halfway up the stairs. Her door slammed and Will sighed.
Lyla immediately made her way to her bathroom, phone in hand. She quickly removed her phone case and rolled her sleeves up. She began cutting, the most she’d cut at once, making new cuts and reopening older ones. She took a deep breath, cleaned the blade and counter top with toilet paper, put her blade and phone case back, rolled down her sleeves and exited the bathroom. She laid on her bed, face in her pillow, and cried silently to herself, guilty because of the vape and what she had just done to herself. She was glad she wore black because nobody would be able to see the blood, and the fact that she did this broke her even more.
She laid there for a while until she heard a knock on her door.
“Lyla, I’m coming in.” Will’s soft voice announced. Lyla rolled onto her back and sat up as the door opened.
“Are you feeling okay?” Will asked, seeing as Lyla had been crying. Lyla nodded.
“Do you want some water?” Will offered, and Lyla nodded her head. At this moment, she realized she had heard those words before.
“Alright. I’ll be right back.” Will told Lyla, and he walked out of her room to go downstairs and get a water bottle, Lyla's mind shifting to the night she'd heard those exact words before.
Lyla had been stressed with upcoming exams, hence coming to the party. She had a pretty bad headache, and the loud noises from the event weren’t helping, the opposite actually. She made her way to the kitchen where Cal was sitting.
“Are you feeling okay?” Cal asked, sounding concerned.
“Yeah, I’m good. I just have a headache is all.”
“Do you want some water?” Cal offered generously, holding out a water bottle.
“Sure.” Lyla accepted his offer, and Cal handed her the water bottle. Lyla took a few sips, feeling the cool liquid run down her throat.
“Thanks, Cal.” Lyla thanked sincerely.
“Yeah, no problem.”
If Lyla would’ve known what Cal had done to that water, she wouldn’t have accepted it.
“Lyla?” Will called out.
“What?” Lyla asked, having forgotten about their previous encounter.
“I got your water.” Will answered, concern filling his voice as he handed her the water.
“Thanks.”
“Yeah.” Will replied, “You alright? I called your name like 50 times.”
“Yeah. I’m fine.”
“Alright.” Will replied skeptically. He was about to say something else, when his phone went off. He pulled it out of his pocket and groaned as he read the notification.
“I have to get to Med.” Will sighed, “I’m gonna call Stella and see if she can watch you, alright?” Lyla nodded her head, and Will brushed a strand of hair out of her face, “I love you.”
“I love you, too.” Will planted a kiss on her forehead, then left her room.
Lyla waited until Will was gone before getting out of bed. Will had texted her saying Stella was on her way, so she knew she had to do this quickly. She grabbed her near empty hydro flask and made her way to her bathroom. She quickly washed it, then made her way into the kitchen. She opened the fridge and grabbed the bottle of Tequila that belonged to her brothers, opened her hydro flask and filled it up about half way. She put it back in the fridge, closed her hydro flask, and went to the main bathroom. She grabbed febreeze so Stella wouldn’t be skeptical, sprayed some, put it back and made her way up the stairs, hydro flask in hand. She closed her bedroom door and connected her air pods to her phone. She then chugged the contents in the hydro flask and made her way to her bathroom.
Once inside, she rewashed the hydro flask, brushed and flossed her teeth, then rinsed out with mouthwash. She made a few more cuts to take the guilt of drinking alcohol away. She cleaned the blood off of the counter, not really caring about cleaning her arms. She rolled up her sleeves as she exited the bathroom, putting her blade back once she was by her nightstand. She grabbed a packet of gum out of her nightstand drawer, popping three pieces into her mouth. She grabbed the water bottle Will had given her earlier and poured the contents into her hydro flask. She shuffled her Spotify playlist she’d been listening to lately and put her air pods in. She laid down on her bed, putting her phone and air pods case next to her. She pulled the covers over her as she quickly fell into a peaceful, drunken slumber.

“Hey, Stella.” Jay greeted as he, Hailey and Will walked in, “Was Lyla good for you?”
“Hey! I checked on her once and she was asleep. I haven’t seen her since.”
“Oh. Well, thanks for being here anyway. I owe you one.”
“Don’t sweat it. I’m happy to help.” Then, Stella grabbed her stuff and left, heading for her shift at Molly’s.
“I’ll go check on her.” Will informed Jay and Hailey who nodded. He turned around and made his way upstairs to Lyla’s bedroom.
“Lyla?” Will called as he softly knocked on her door. When he didn’t get a response, he became kind of worried, and opened the door. He saw that she was fast asleep, which calmed him down. He was about to leave, when he thought he saw something on her right arm. He decided to check it out, just to be sure. When he made it over there, he saw what looked like dried blood that had trickled down her arm, which worried him. Curiosity got the best of him, and he gently grabbed her arm, slowly rolling up her sleeve.
When he saw the cuts, he wanted to cry. He flipped her arm and saw more cuts. He was relieved there weren't very many, until he realized her other arm would likely have more, being that she was right handed. This realization made him want to throw up. He didn’t think something could have been bothering Lyla this badly.
Lyla jolted awake from the contact, a nightmare having begun when Will opened the door.
“What the fuck?” She muttered, then she saw Will, “Will, what are you-?” She followed his gaze and saw her arm. She sat up a little in bed and slowly looked up, meeting Will’s worried eyes.
“Will, i-it’s not what it looks like-” Lyla tried to protest, but she was at a loss for words.
“Jay!” Will called for his younger brother.
“Will!” Lyla hissed as Jay came rushing in. She banged her head on her head board in annoyance and guilt. She was sure her secret wouldn't be a secret anymore.
“What’s up?” Jay inquired worriedly. He walked over to Will, and was shocked to see Lyla’s arm. He bent down and inspected it.
Jay was honestly at a loss for words. Lyla just ran a hand through her hair in exasperation and fear.
Jay walked over to Lyla’s left side and bent down.
“Can you roll this sleeve up?” Jay asked gently. Lyla knew there was no escape. She rolled her other sleeve up, revealing cuts all up and down her arm, at least twice as many as her right arm. Lyla felt tears form in her eyes and her heart began to race.
“Lyla,” Jay started, his voice soft, “Can you tell us why you did this?”
Lyla stayed silent, putting her hands to her eyes to try and stop the tears from flowing.
“Lyla,” Will spoke up after a moment, “Can you please tell us? We can help you.” “No. I-It doesn’t matter. It’s my fault anyway.”
Jay and Will shared a look, then Jay spoke up, “Lyla, please. I promise we won’t be mad at you.”
Lyla looked at her brothers, their gazes a mix between soft and concerned. She knew it was now or never.
She sighed and took a deep breath, putting her head back and closing her eyes, “I snuck out to go to a party and Cal drugged and raped me.”
Even though the words were rushed, Jay and Will still heard them, and to say they were pissed at Cal was an understatement.
Lyla drew in a deep, shaky breath, “I-I’m sorry. If I would’ve listened-”
“Hey, look at me.” Jay instructed, his voice soft. Lyla met his gaze, and he grabbed her hand, “None of this, and I mean none of this, is your fault, okay? It’s Cal’s and only Cal’s.” Lyla nodded her head.
Will opened his arms, “Come here.” Lyla accepted the embrace and cried in Will’s arms while he rubbed her back soothingly.
He looked at Jay, “Go get him.” Will mouthed, rage in his eyes. Jay nodded and walked out of the room, Will turning his attention back to Lyla.
“Hey, what happened?” Hailey asked as she saw her husband coming down the stairs. She could tell he was beyond livid.
“Call Voight, tell him we have a case. I’ll explain on the way.” Jay grabbed his coat and keys and stalked out to the truck, Hailey following suit.
Meanwhile, Will had gotten Lyla to calm down.
“I want you to know none of this is your fault. Just because you snuck out doesn’t mean you’re the one to blame, okay?” Lyla nodded. Will planted a kiss on her head and got up.
“Will?”
“Yeah?”
“Can you stay with me?”
“Yeah, of course. I’m just gonna grab a blanket and pillow from my room, okay?” Lyla nodded her head.
After a few minutes, Will came back with his blanket and pillow. He turned off her light and laid down next to her, wrapping an arm around her protectively. She rested her head on his chest, enjoying his warmth. After a while, she finally fell asleep, feeling the safety she’d craved.

“Voight.” Voight’s gruff voice came over the line. Jay and Hailey were in the truck, Jay racing towards the district, obviously using his lights and sirens.
“Hey Sarge.” Hailey started, “Jay has a case.”
“Talk to me, Halstead.”
Jay sighed, “Lyla told us she snuck out to a party and was drugged and assaulted. The offender is Caleb McCarthy, 15, no priors.”
“Alright. Do you know how long ago this happened?”
“No. I’ll call Will and have him ask Lyla.”
“Alright. I’ll call the team. Do you know where this prick lives?”
“Yeah.”
“Alright. Come to the district, we can debrief the team there.”
“Okay. Thanks, Sarge.”
“You don’t have to thank me. She’s family. I’ll see you in a few.” Then, Voight hung up.
Hailey rested a hand on Jay’s arm, “We’ll get him, Jay.”
“Yeah, I know. I just feel bad for her, you know? She had to carry this by herself for God knows how long.”
“Yeah.” Hailey squeezed Jay’s arm as they pulled into the district. Hailey got out of the truck and made her way to the bullpen as Jay called Will.
“What’s up?” Will asked, answering on the second ring.
“Can you ask Lyla when the party happened?”
“Yeah, hold on.” Will put the phone down and turned his attention to his sister. He gently rubbed her back.
“Lyla.” He said softly, and Lyla opened her eyes.
“Hey, I’m sorry to have to wake you, but I have to ask you something. Do you remember when the party happened?”
Lyla thought for a moment before answering, “October 15th."
“Alright. Thank you. You can go back to sleep now, okay?” Lyla nodded her head, resting it where it was a moment before.
Will picked up his phone, “October 15th.”
“Alright. Thanks man.”
“Yeah. Go get him.” Will hung up and pulled Lyla closer to him, planting a kiss on her head.
Jay walked into the district and buzzed himself up to the bullpen where the team was waiting, already aware of the situation.
“October 15th. That’s when the party happened.”
“Alright.” Voight started, scratching his head, “We’re gonna need more evidence. Go through his phone records, check his social media, anything we can. Let’s get this prick.”

Will knew Maggie was on shift, so when he knew Lyla was asleep, he called her to tell her he was gonna need to use some of his vacation days. He didn’t tell her exactly what happened, just that it was a family matter.
Will was beyond pissed. He just hoped Jay would get that son of a bitch that had hurt his little sister, causing her to spiral to the point she was hurting herself. It broke his heart. He really wished they would’ve caught on sooner, because he knew they’d have more evidence.
He looked at Lyla who was currently sound asleep. She felt so fragile in his arms, so vulnerable, so scared. He figured that was the reason she had started vaping. He wanted to ask her if she was doing anything else, but he didn't want to push her. All she needed right now was her brothers to be there for her, and Will knew this.
Will didn’t understand how someone could do something so evil, so wrong, especially someone he knew Lyla trusted with her life. That’s what pissed Will off the most, was the fact that she trusted him since she was little. Her and Cal had been best friends since kindergarten, and he broke that bond so selfishly.
Suddenly, Lyla jolted awake, heart racing. Will’s heart broke, knowing exactly what was going on.
“Hey, hey, I got you. I’m right here.” Lyla’s heart slowed and she leaned into her brother.
“Did you have a nightmare?” Will asked gently, and Lyla nodded her head.
Will planted a kiss on top of her head, “It’s okay. Do you want your hydro flask?” Lyla nodded her head. Will used his free arm and grabbed the hydro flask, flipping the straw up. He handed it to her, and Lyla took it, taking a few sips of the water inside. She closed the straw and put it on the nightstand closest to her, feeling tears well up in her eyes.
“I should’ve stayed home.”
“No. Just because you snuck out doesn’t make it your fault. It’s not your fault, and it can not and never will be your fault.” Will pulled her closer, wanting her to know that she was safe and that none of this was her fault.
“Can you tell me a story?” Lyla asked.
“What kind of story?”
“I don’t know, like something you and Jay did together.”
Will thought for a moment, then chuckled when he thought of the perfect story.
“Okay. You know the Target by your school?” Lyla nodded her head, and Will continued, “One day, Jay and I ditched. We walked around, and when we got up to the Target, for some reason we decided to steal a shopping cart from the parking lot.”
“Jay jumped in the cart and I pushed him all the way until we got back to the school. I then had the idea to push the cart up the wheelchair ramp outside the front entrance and then push him down the stairs.”
“What happened?” Lyla inquired, kind of intrigued.
“Well, you know that big ass scar on his right arm?” Lyla nodded. “He has that because the cart flung Jay forward and he almost broke his arm. When Mom and Dad found out they grounded us for a month and we had to pay for the shopping cart we stole.”
“I thought you were smart.” Lyla retorted playfully.
“Hey!” Will protested, “I am smart!” Lyla giggled, and Will chuckled. He was glad he made her laugh, because that was the first time in forever that he saw her actually smile.
Lyla yawned, and Will held her tighter. After a while, she fell asleep again, leaving Will awake and pondering.

“I think I got something!” Kevin announced from his desk. Everyone stood up and made their way to Kev’s desk.
“This tweet was posted around 9:00 the night of the party.” Kevin informed the team.
“Didn’t think drugging someone would be that easy.” Kim read the tweet, which was posted by Cal. It angered everyone, especially Jay.
“Doesn’t that count as a confession?” Jay asked Voight eagerly.
“To the drugging, yes, but to the rape itself, no. Anyone have anything else we can use?”
“I might.” Adam started, opening a vanilla folder, “I recovered some deleted texts Caleb sent to a contact named JJ that were sent the day after the party and, well, they’re pretty, um, gruesome.” Adam handed the paper with the messages to Voight, who began reading to himself. Let’s just say Voight became angrier by the second, and when Voight gets angry, well, you don’t want to mess with him.
“Kim, you get a warrant. Halstead, Upton, once we get the warrant, we’ll get this prick.” Voight demanded, and the three of them grabbed their coats. Voight would’ve made Jay stay, but after reading those texts, he didn’t really care.

Having secured the arrest warrant, Jay sped off to Cal’s house, Voight following close behind. When they got there, Jay parked the truck in front of Cal’s house, and he and Hailey hopped out, Voight following behind.
Hailey knocked on the door, and after a few moments, Cal opened the door.
“Hi, Hailey.” Cal greeted, “What’s up?”
“Hey, Caleb.” Hailey replied sarcastically, faking a smile, “I need you to get against the wall for me.”
“What, why?” Cal asked, seemingly confused.
“Get against the wall, now.” Jay commanded using his don’t fuck with me tone of voice, and Cal did as told.
Jay pushed in front of Hailey and walked into the house, handcuffs out. He first patted Cal down, then he began cuffing him, when Cal’s mom and dad came into the room.
“What’s going on?” Cal’s mom inquired, confused and worried at the same time.
“We have an arrest warrant, ma’am.” Voight informed the confused parents, handing her the arrest warrant.
“Th-This is insane! He couldn’t have done anything wrong!” Cal’s mom exclaimed, not even reading the paper the sergeant handed her.
“Oh yeah,” Jay started, anger present in his voice and features, “Tell that to the fifteen year old girl he sexually assaulted.” Jay turned his attention to Cal, pushing him forward and leading him out of the house, “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be provided for you.”
Hailey made her way to the passenger side as Jay opened the back door and shoved Cal inside. He slammed the door and walked over to the driver side, hopping in and starting the car. He drove to the district, Voight following closely behind once again. Once they got there, Jay walked through the garage and roughly handed Cal over to Kevin, who brought him to the interrogation room. He was about to follow, when Voight stopped him.
“Halstead,” Voight called, and Jay turned around to look at his sergeant.
“Go home, be with your sister. She needs you.” Jay nodded in agreement, turned around and went towards the garage door, receiving a pat on the back from Voight. Hailey opened the garage for him.
“Thanks, Hails. I’ll see you at home.”
“See you at home.” Then, Jay walked out and went to his truck, Hailey closing the garage behind him and making her way to the interrogation room. Jay started the truck and drove home, choosing not to use the sirens so he’d have time to calm down and gather his thoughts.

It was about 11:30 now, and Lyla was still fast asleep, much to Will’s relief. He was deep in thought, thinking about Lyla’s road to recovery, when Jay walked in, snapping Will out of his thoughts.
“Hey.” Will greeted softly so he wouldn’t wake Lyla up, “Did you get him?”
“Yeah. How’s she doing?” Jay asked as he walked towards Lyla’s bed.
Will sighed, “She’s got a long road ahead of her, that’s for sure.”
Jay laid down next to Lyla on the other side, and Will moved his arm so Jay could replace it with his.
“Well,” Jay started, lowering his voice to a whisper. He planted a kiss on Lyla’s head, “We’ll be here for her, every step of the way.”
Will nodded in agreement, and after a while, they both fell asleep. Lyla had woken up when Jay came in, unbeknownst to her brothers. Shortly after Jay had come into her room, Lyla fell into a comfortable slumber, thankful that she had her brothers to help her heal.

Jay is not ghosting Hailey.
The definition of ghosting, in the context everyone is trying to use it in, in the Oxford Dictionary is:
the practice of ending a personal relationship with someone by suddenly and without explanation withdrawing from all communication
...Jay told her he wouldn't be able to stay in contact while he was gone. That was an explanation. Not answering her calls is not ghosting, it's doing literally what he told her would happen when he left for Bolivia. There was also no "ending a...relationship" there. They're still married. Stop misusing words to twist a narrative. Words have specific meanings for a reason.

Take My Stress Away
Summary: Jay hasn't spoken to you for a week and you feel you have lost your brother again. After a bad day at work, you find someone waiting by your car.
Warnings: fluffiness, poorly written medical scenes because I have no idea what they are saying in the show 🤣, angry-ish Jay, brief implied SA (not descriptive), proofread but there's always a mistake after posting 🤣

“I don’t know what to tell you, kid,” Herrmann said, pouring you a drink.
You scoffed, “I thought you were my friend, Hermie” you took a sip of your drink and shook your head, “You could have warned me,”
Jay was completely pissed. He stormed out of the room, without looking at you. You followed him, begging him to listen. He didn’t. You did not want this mistake to ruin your relationship with your brother.
Was it a mistake?
Of course it was, nothing is worth losing your family over.
But it was so good.
It’s not like you did it on purpose. In your defence, he said his name was Henry. Maybe you should have connected the dots, but you had two double vodkas and had just done a 12 hour shift. The only thing your brain was able to process was the hot guy sitting at the end of the bar.
Herrmann sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "I didn't think (y/n)," he said, meeting her gaze with a look that was part apology, part caution. "You seemed to like the guy. Besides, I didn’t think he was the one night stand type… or any type really."
“He wasn’t anything like Jay described,” you muttered, swirling the drink in your glass absentmindedly. Herrmann watched you closely, seeing the confusion and frustration flicker across your face. "Jay made him sound like some cold, heartless guy. But Henry... Hank,” you corrected with a sigh, “He was different. Charming, even. He made me laugh. For the first time in a long time,”
“Hey!” Herrmann exclaimed, his brows shooting up in mock offense. He placed a hand dramatically over his heart, as if you deeply wounded him, and gestured to himself with the other hand, “I make you laugh,”
You couldn't help but chuckle at his theatrics. You shook your head, still smiling, and said, "You know what I mean."
Herrmann leaned forward, resting his hands on the bar. "Give Jay some time. He'll come around. You didn't do anything wrong,”
“I don’t want to lose him over this,” you said, your voice quivering slightly. You bit your lower lip, a nervous habit you’d developed over the years, and looked down at your hands, which were tightly clasped around her glass, “I already lost 28 years,”
“You won’t,” he said, softly, placing a hand on your wrist, “families fight, they make up,”
"Thanks, Hermie,” you said, standing up from your barstool. “I have a shift tomorrow,” you added, grabbing your jacket from the back of the stool. You took the cash from your pocket and placed it on the bar for the drink.
Herrmann took the cash and put it in the register. “See you tomorrow, (Y/N),” he said, giving you a friendly smile.
The words you dreaded the most fall from Maggie’s lips, “Mass cas,” they echoed in your head and before you knew it, you were in a bay, trying to save a teenage girl’s life.
It was chaos. Everyone was stretched thin. And so were the supplies. The air smelt of sweat and blood, so potent you could almost taste it. You were alone with the girl for what felt like hours until Connor came in. He saw your face and reassured you that you had done a good job, and the girl was lucky to have you. You felt as though you weren’t. It was times like this where you question whether you are cut out for this.
But then, the machine sounded that one tone that you always dreaded. The continuous drone and despite your and Connor’s best efforts, she passed away.
Later you find from Sam that she had a bleed in the brain. Was it your fault? It felt like your fault.
Like he could read your mind, Connor came over to you, placing a comforting hand on your shoulder. “Hey,” he said gently, “it’s not your fault.”
He glanced around at the mess the chaos had left the ER in. “In a situation like this, where there are so many patients. Even though we try our best, sometimes things don’t turn out the way we hope.”
The ER was slowly returning to order. The frantic atmosphere had calmed down, like a battlefield after the dust had settled. You moved through the now-quiet space, your mind still replaying the day’s events. You could feel the exhaustion in your limbs, but nothing was as painful as what your heart was going through. Sure you’d seen many people die before, young and old, but it doesn’t get any easier.
You worked alongside everyone, helping to tidy up the mess left behind. The day had clearly taken a toll on everyone, and it showed on their faces. Exhaustion was etched into every expression you saw. When it was finally time to leave, you were relieved.
You put your jacket on, pulling it over your shoulders and zipping it up, then, you grabbed your bag and slipped the strap onto your shoulder. You reached into the front zipper pocket and pulled out your keys, save fishing for them later in the dark car park.
On your way out of the hospital, you gave a tired wave to your colleagues, some of whom were still finishing up their tasks. Will caught your eye and walked over with a smile. "I’m going to talk to Jay," he said, "so I might be a bit late getting home." You nodded and gave him a hug. With a final wave, you stepped out into the cool evening air and just breathed it in for a second. You were ready to head home and felt you could sleep for a week. Maybe a month.
You made your way to your car, each step feeling like it took more effort than the last. Your feet dragged heavily on the pavement, scraping along the pavement as if you were being weighed down by something.
The cool evening air felt refreshing but it offered little comfort to you. As you approached your car, a shadowy figure started to form in the dim parking lot lights. Their posture was relaxed, hands shoved into their pockets, leaning casually against your car. You couldn’t quite make out who it was from a distance, but as you stepped closer the figure became clearer, and realization hit you. The familiar profile and stance matched Henry… Hank.
What is he doing here? Did something happen with Jay? No. Will would have told you. Wouldn’t he?
“Hey” he said as you reached the car, the simple greeting seeming out of place against the backdrop of everything you were feeling inside.
“Hey,” you squeaked out. You were feeling everything in the book, tiredness, sadness, nervousness you name it.
“How come you didn’t tell me you were Jay’s sister?” he asked, his head nodding slightly as he spoke, his brown eyes never leaving yours. If you weren’t so tired, those eyes and that voice would have your body begging for a repeat of last week.
You shrugged as much as your muscles would let you, “Probably the same reason you didn’t tell me you were his boss,” you retorted.
He looked at you for a moment, his eyes searching yours, looking for something you weren’t sure you had to give. You felt like your soul was laid bare and he was looking for a secret you didn’t even know you had.
But then the dam broke. You just couldn't hold it back any longer, and tears welled up in your eyes. Your voice cracked as you spoke, “I’m sorry,” The weight of everything—Hank, the exhaustion, your relationship with Jay, the teenage girl—finally spilled over.
“Hey,” he said, pulling his hands out of his pockets and reaching for you. He pulled you into his arms and surprisingly, you felt relaxed. Safe, He gently stroked your hair, his fingers combing through it soothingly, “Come on, I’ll take you home. You’re not driving while tired,” he said, grabbing your hand and leaving no room for arguments. Not that you had the energy to argue anyway.
You nodded and allowed Hank to lead you to his car. The doors clicked shut as you settled into the passenger seat. The steady hum of the engine filled the silence, and the city lights streaked past the windows, casting a soft glow inside the car. You glanced over at Hank a couple of times before turning to the passenger window, focusing on the passing objects. You bit your lip when you shot a glance at him. Why does he have to be so handsome?
If he wasn’t Jay’s boss, you’d definitely go for it. You wanted him. You scoffed shaking your head. You felt like Eve in the Garden of Eden and he was the apple. You wanted another taste.
The car slowed and came to a gentle stop in front of the building and your sadness reappeared. You were probably the only one here feeling this way. He’d probably gotten over it the second you walked out the district. You probably were just a one night stand to him.
“I’m not a one night kinda guy,” Hank spoke suddenly, breaking the silence. Your head snapped towards him, causing a slight jolt of whiplash.
“I’m not a one night kinda girl,” you replied, managing a small, sad smile. You glanced out the window, dreading what he might say next, “If you weren’t Jay’s boss then, I totally would,” you added, your voice trailing off.
Hank turned to face you fully, one eyebrow raised, “Would what?” he asked, you looked at him, rolling your eyes when you notice the smug smirk playing on his face, “I would too, but it wouldn’t be fair to you,” you scrunched your eyes at him. Fair to you? What did he mean? “I come with a lot of baggage and… I screwed up your relationship with your brother,” he continued, the smirk fading into something more serious. His eyes flicked down to the steering wheel before meeting yours again.
You shifted in your seat to get a better look at him, resting your head against the headrest, “I come with a lot of baggage too,” you sighed, your gaze dropping to the bracelet on your wrist—a gift from Jay when you got the job at Gaffney. You fiddled with it absentmindedly, “As for Jay… neither of us knew,”
His expression softened as he looked at you, “We do know now, and I can’t stop thinking about you,”
Your breath caught in your throat. His quiet words lingering in the small space of the car. His gaze remained locked on yours as the dim interior light cast soft shadows across his face. His hands rested on the steering wheel, fingers tapping lightly in an unconscious rhythm.
“I can’t stop thinking about you either but…”
“I know,” he nodded.
“Thank you, for the ride,” you said softly, leaning over to press a soft kiss to his cheek. Your lips brushed against his skin, lingering just a moment longer than you intended. You pulled back slowly, your eyes catching his, and the space between you seemed to close. You could feel the warmth from his breath, and before you could speak, he leaned in slightly. Your lips met in a brief, gentle kiss.
Without a word, you leaned back in, your hand reaching up to cup the back of his neck. This time, the kiss was not gentle. It was hungry, a desperate bid to consume each other. You felt the tension in your body coil tightly as your mouths moved together, and a soft moan escaped your throat. and it seemed to add fuel to the fire that had just been lit.
You got out the car, "Jay!" you called for him, "Please, let me explain," your voice was shaky. You didn't know where to start.
Jay's face was a thundercloud as he stomped over, his eyes flashing with anger. "What the hell do you think you're doing?" he spat out.
“Jay, please, just hear me out,” you said, stepping closer to him. Your eyes pleaded with him as you reached out to him. Tears forming in your eyes, “I didn’t know, he didn’t either… but” you paused, looking over your shoulder at him, “I…” you wanted to tell him how you felt but you thought it would make little difference.
Jay’s expression hardened, and a bitter laugh escaped him. It certainly wasn’t a laugh of amusement, but one of disbelief, “You what? Huh? You going to say you love him or something?” His words were laced with sarcasm.
“No, but…” you began, your voice catching as you tried to gather your thoughts.
Jay’s eyes narrowed, “What? Come on. You wanted to talk about it. Let’s talk about it then.” His arms crossed over his chest waiting for you to elaborate.
You took a deep breath, finding the courage to continue. “Jay, I’m not saying I’m in love with him, but I could be. I haven’t felt this way about anyone in a long time. Not since...”
He cut you off, “Look how that turned out,” he said, his words heavy with accusation. “You divorced him because you found him in bed with someone else.”
The sting of his words hit you like a punch to the gut. You flinched but tried to maintain your composure despite the raw pain of the memory. But you failed.
“I haven’t felt this safe in a long time,” you croaked out, Jay opened his mouth to speak but you didn’t let him, “53…” you said, confusing everyone, “I had 53 foster homes, some nice, some… not. I also had a brother,”
“Had?” Will asked, his voice was soft and gentle.
“H-he died,” you said, your voice quivering as if each word burnt your tongue. “Protecting me.” You took a deep breath, you didn’t really expect to have to talk about this again. the only person who knew was Herrmann after some guy outside the bar wouldn’t take no for an answer, “Our foster father… wasn’t nice. H-he used to um… mainly when Liam wasn’t around,” you paused, risking a look to your brothers, they knew what you were hinting at, “One day, Liam came home early and… tried to stop him. I-I lost him, and now I lost you too,”
Jay’s face paled, the anger in his eyes faltering at your words. Will stepped forward and wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into a tight, comforting embrace.
You buried your face in his shoulder, your breath hitching with each shuddering sob. Will held you, his hand rubbing soothing circles on your back. After a moment, Will pulled away slightly, gently wiping some stray tears from your now red cheeks.
Before you could fully process the moment, another pair of arms enveloped you. Jay pulled you into his embrace, “You will never lose me,” he said softly, pressing a kiss to your hairline. You broke down again, this time in tears of happiness. Jay’s grip tightened, “All I’ve ever wanted was for you to be safe.”
As he pulled away, Jay glanced over your shoulder at Hank, who had been standing silently, observing the exchange. Jay’s eyes were fierce, the protective version resurfacing. “You hurt her,” Jay said, his voice was low, but steady, “I’ll kill you.”
“Wait… what?” you asked, completely caught off guard.
Jay sighed, his expression softening when he turned his attention back to you. “I don’t want to lose you either,” he started, a hint of vulnerability in his voice that he often hides behind his protectiveness. “You’re my sister. I just want you to be safe and happy, and I don’t ever want to see your heart break again,”
“You can’t protect me from everything, Jay," you replied softly, offering him a small smile, "But I know you'll try," you added, a light tease in your tone.
Jay chuckled lightly, shaking his head. "Yeah, well, it's in the job description,"
“Hey, (y/n), how about you go out tonight? You had a rough night,” Will said, you looked at him your eyebrows scrunching.
“You kicking me out?” you asked, a fake pout on your lips, Will rolled his eyes, “I don’t think so, Will, I just wanna rest,”
"We could watch a movie, at my place?" Hank suggested with a shrug. You smiled, cuddling on a sofa with him? You thought about it for a bit. That sounds so enticing and doesn’t require any effort.
You glanced over at Jay, seeking his approval with a silent plea and the cutest smile you could muster. Jay sighed as he looked between you and Hank. He rolled his eyes, "Okay, go," he said, waving you off.
You squealed in delight, bouncing on the balls of your feet. You quickly leaned over to kiss Jay’s cheek, leaving a faint lipstick mark on his skin
“Hey!” Will exclaimed, feigning offense as he crossed his arms over his chest. His eyebrows shot up in mock offence. You knew from the playful glint in his eyes that he wasn’t really offended but you played along anyway.
“Best twin brother ever,” you corrected with a playful grin, stepping over to Will. You leaned in and kissed his cheek as well, leaving another lipstick mark. Will chuckled, shaking his head. With a quick wave and a bright smile, you hurried back over to Hank’s car. The cool evening air nipped at your skin as you slipped into the passenger seat, the door closing with a soft thud.
As you settled into the passenger seat, Hank started the car, the engine purring softly to life. The glow from the dashboard lights cast a gentle blue hue over his face, highlighting his strong beautiful jawline. You looked out the window, watching the familiar streets of Chicago pass by, illuminated slightly by the dim streetlights.
It didn’t take long for Hank’s place to come into view. He pulled into the driveway, the gravel crunching under the tires. As you stepped out of the car, Hank extended his hand, you reached out and took it, feeling a comforting squeeze as your feet hit the pavement. Hank noticed your bag hanging off your shoulder, "Let me take that," he said, sliding the strap off your shoulder before you could protest. You smiled maybe you thought.
The two of you walked up the short path to his front door. Hank unlocked the door and held it open for you, stepping aside to let you in first out the cold.
Hank gestured towards the sofa, "Make yourself comfortable. I'll grab some drinks," He disappeared into the kitchen. You kicked off your shoes and curled up on the sofa, letting out a sigh as you feel the soft fabric against your skin.
A few moments later, Hank returned with some beers, you eyed the beer, “I don’t entertain much,” he spoke as he set them down on the coffee table and grabbed the remote, scrolling through the options. "Any preferences?" he asked, glancing over at you.
You shrugged, "Something light and funny?" you suggested. He nodded and picked a comedy, the kind that you could easily get lost in.
As the movie started, you found yourself leaning against him. The warmth of his body next to yours and the soothing sounds of laughter from the screen made you feel peaceful. You felt the tension of the day melting away.
Before long, the soft flicker of the TV and the warmth of his body lulled you into a state of peaceful drowsiness. Your eyes grew heavy, and despite your efforts to stay awake, you felt yourself drifting off. The last thing you remembered was the sound of Hank's low chuckle and the gentle rise and fall of his breathing beside you.
As you dozed off, Hank noticed and gently pulled a blanket over you. He watched you sleep for a moment, a soft smile on his face, before carefully picking you up. You stirred slightly, mumbling something incoherent, but didn't wake up. Hank carried you to the guest room, laying you gently on the bed. He turned to leave, but you reached out, grabbing his wrist.
"Stay," you murmured, your voice barely above a whisper.
Hank hesitated for a moment before he nodded. He slipped off his shoes, you could hear the faint sound of them hitting the floor before he carefully climbed into the guest bed beside you, the mattress dipping slightly under his weight. The cool sheets rustled softly as he settled in. You instinctively rolled over, your body drawn to his like a magnet. Your head found its place on his chest, the soft fabric of his shirt comforting against your cheek.
You could feel the steady rise and fall of his breathing, each breath a gentle motion that seemed to sync with the beating of his heart. As you nestled closer, the comforting warmth of his body enveloped you once more.
His arm wrapped around you, as if shielding you from the outside world. His fingers brushed lightly against your back. The soft, repetitive sound of his heartbeat lulled you into a peaceful slumber, your breathing slowing to match his.

Oh my, you're so right. There are not enough Will Halstead fics in the one chicago fandom. I would have an idea for this fine man. Maybe you like it.
It's the best fiends to lovers trope... I'm obsessed with this kind of stuff. They're both idiots in love but are too afraid to destroy their friendship when they would tell the other how they feel. Will is super protective of reader. Reader has a chronic illness (cause I NEED to see him in worried protective doctor mode) like a heart desase or asthma or epilepsy. So he always watches out for her helping her when she feels sick... One day he gets hit on at Molly's and reader sees him flirting with a girl. He starts to date the girl. The girl is super bitchy and is jealous of reader cause she's Wills best friend. So the girl tries to drive a wedge between reader and Will, maybe weave some lies, hurts reader mentally etc so that reader distance herself from Will cause she's hurt of what his girlfriend said to her or how she treats reader. That lead to huge emotional stress which flares up her illness. Reader is feeling bad both emotionally and physically. And it gets dramatic in some kind of way. Maybe Jay or another character notices reader getting worse and tells Will. And first he doesn't belive it, cause his best friend would tell him of she's super sick, wouldn't she? Until reader is admitted to Med or is found unconscious in her apartment or something else.
Sorry for my long rambling. This is just an idea maybe you like some parts of it.

Okay so this is one of the longest requests I have gotten for Will so far. I honestly enjoyed writing this so so much and I truly hope I did as much as you asked for 🤗 🤗 🤗 🤗

When people talk about having a best friend you have to remember that no relationship is going to be the same as someone else’s. But when my friends think of a best friend duo they look at me and Will Halstead. We’ve been in the others life from the time we were five years old and haven’t left each other’s side since then.
He had went onto to become a doctor and I had persuade working in the same police department as his brother Jay had. Years ago when Will had a fight with his dad about wanting to go off to college I was there for the aftermath when Will stormed out. He told me the main reason he wanted to become a doctor was so that he could help people, especially people like me. I was born a few weeks earlier at the end of my mom’s pregnancy which gave me underdeveloped lungs and asthma.
Walking into Molly’s bar wearing some ripped blue jeans shorts and a white tank top I was looking for Will until I finally found him up at the bar. Striding over I was about to say something until I saw him with a blonde that I couldn’t really stand to be around. Her and I had gotten off to the wrong foot and she basically always made a point to lead my best friend away me. Heading to the bathroom I leaned my body into the wall just needing a minute to myself except to my surprise the very girl I didn’t want to see came up to me. “How long do you think he’s going to be there to babysit you hmm?”
“What are you talking about?” I asked her sensing some annoyance in her tone.
The blonde named Brooke snapped. “I mean he can’t babysit you and be your best friend forever. He is an ED doc and now spends most of his time with me.”
“Did he tell you this?” I questioned her knowing my friend was very busy as was I since I was doing everything I could to someday become a paramedic for Firehouse 51 with my friend Sylvie Brett who had recently joined the team.
Brooke rolled her eyes like I was an idiot or something. “He’s just spending time with you because he’s a doctor and feels it’s his sworn duty to protect you and make sure you’re well.”
“Will and I have been friends since we were five years old. So, I think you’ve got your thoughts mixed up.” Responding to the girl I had faith in my friend way before I would ever believe what this woman was saying.
She throws her hands away from her sides. “I’m just saying he clearly doesn’t have feelings for you like he does for me.”
“How would you know huh. Can you see what he is thinking inside his head cause I certainly can’t.”
She shrugged her shoulders. “I’ve seen your little asthma attacks the first time I met you at this bar. Do you seriously think that he’s gonna want to be with somebody with a disability.”
“I’m done talking to you.” I began walking away from her until she yanked me back by my forearm.
“Just face the facts and realize you’ll just be another patient to him and nothing else.”
Yanking my arm from her grasp I stomped away not bothering to talk to her or Will for the night. The next few weeks I had basically been avoiding Will’s phone calls or texts figuring that she was right that I would always be a patient in his eyes. I decided to take a walk and see Brett so headed to the firehouse seeing her stalking supplies inside the ambulance. “There’s my favorite paramedic.”
“Hey Y/n! I wasn’t thinking I would be seeing you today. How have you been?” She climbed down out of the ambulance coming over and embracing me in a hug.
I wrapped my arms around her hugging her back. “I’m good. How are you and Casey?”
“We’re doing good. I’ve been meaning to ask how are you and Dr. Halstead. I’ve been meaning to ask lately.”
I raised a brow at her question. “Me and Will. I – I don’t understand.”
“Oh please. There’s something clearly going on between you two.” Brett rolled her eyes like I just said something completely ridiculous.
I raised my hands waving them in front of my chest not believing that there was something going on between me and my friend. “I don’t think you understand the relationship that he and I exactly. We are just friends and nothing more. Besides I’m fairly certain he doesn’t think of me in that way.”
“Pfft I’m sorry but that is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.” She made a noise snorting out a laugh. “Have you missed the signs where he sends you those lovey doe eyes, looking out for you, and I’ve never seen you hanging around anyone else but him since the day I met you two.”
“Look Brett, I appreciate you being hopeful. But there’s never going to be anything romantic going on with me and Will.” I felt my eyes beginning to water and I ran my fingers through my hair slowly feeling a tightening in my chest. I grabbed my chest gasping for air not expecting this to happen. “I mean why would he ever go for me. He has a girlfriend, regardless if she’s a bitch. But it’s fine – argh!”
Brett rushed forward catching my body before I could hit the concrete. “Y/n! Hey, hey, woah, woah. Kelly! Casey! I need some help out here.” She shouted before my eyes got heavy and I loosened my grip on her arms passing out on her.
I’m not sure how long I was out for by the time I slowly blinked my eyes opened and saw some bright lights that clearly looked like the hospital lights. I sucked in some breaths feeling a mask over my nose and mouth meaning asthma medicine was getting pushed into my body. The curtain drew open and I saw Rhodes enter the room carrying a chart underneath one arm. “Hey Y/n, you’re breathing seems to be doing better. I’ll just slowly take this off now.”
“Thanks Dr. Rhodes – uh where’s Brett – at?” I coughed after he pulled the mask down from my face and helping me sit upright more on the pillows.
He glanced towards the curtain answering my question. “She’s outside by the nurse desk. Will is actually with her too.”
“He is?” I asked leaning up feeling hopeful for a brief second.
He nodded walking out into the hallway waving them inside the room. Brett came in and smiled brightly hugging me and I hugged her back pulling away letting my best friend have my attention more than her. “I’ll let you two talk for a bit. Come talk with you afterwards.” She stepped outside the room back into the hallway leaving the two of us alone.
“I was so worried about you when I saw Brett bring you in like that. I mean I thought we had a better understanding going here. That – that we – “He stuttered out his words frantically running a hand through his auburn curls. “You’re my best friend so I thought you’d tell me if something bad was really going on with you.”
I did my best to lie, biting my lip unknowingly. “Will, I just had a small episode. You know flare ups can happen from almost anything.”
“I’m aware of that. But that’s not the point.”
I snapped. “The point doesn’t matter.”
“Yes it does matter.”
Shaking my head I wished he wasn’t so argumentative like I was. “No it doesn’t. Look I’m fine now so we don’t have to have this conversation anymore.”
“Yes, enough of this. Okay I know you’re lying o me about something and I’m hurt that you didn’t feel comfortable enough to talk to me about it.” He raised his hands in the air.
I rolled my eyes wishing this wasn’t happening right now between us. “You don’t need to know all of my business, William!”
“We’ll excuse me. I thought us being childhood best friends meant we were much closer than you think we are!” He raised his voice at me in frustration.
Clutching my hands into fists punching the hospital bed sheets shouting up at my best friend with some tears falling down my face. “Gosh damn it Will just stop it. I don’t want to be your friend who is always a patient in your eyes. I know that’s all I’m ever going to be!”
“What. Who, who told you that?” Will made a confused face at me.
I scoffed. “That blonde girl named Brooke you’re dating. She told me facts that you clearly aren’t comfortable saying to my face.”
“Why would she say those things. We’re not together anymore.” He responded.
I parted my lips thinking he was joking. “You’re not. Why – why not?”
“She just liked the idea of dating an ED doc. I broke up with her last Friday. That’s what I was wanting to talk with you about in my multiple phone calls. But I guess I got my answer when you never answered.” His gaze lowered down to the floor and he went to leave.
I gently called his attention. “Will, wait a sec. What was the calls about?”
“They were about my feelings for you.”
Sucking in a shacky breath I wasn’t sure how to feel about what he was about to say. “Will, are you saying that you think of me more than a friend?”
Rather than giving me a verbal response he strides forward climbing up onto my bed with his legs on either side of mine. He gently grabs my face in his hands crashing his lips down onto mine not giving me a chance to say anything. It took me a minute before I ran my fingers up his arms wrapping my arms around his kissing him back.
Threading my fingers through his hair, tugging on it hearing him moan into the kiss. I thought this was a dream for a brief moment until he broke the kiss resting his forehead against mine. “You’ve always been more than a friend to me. I just - didn’t want to say anything and ruin what we have if you didn’t feel the same. And don’t ever think for a minute that you’re just a patient to me. You’re anything else but that Y/n.”
“It’s crazy that my reasoning for not telling you how I felt before now is the same reason as yours. It’s a relief we both come off as idiots in love.” I smiled chuckling resting my other hand on his cheek.
He sent me a cheecky grin. “Well can this idiot in love officially ask you out on a date tonight?”
“Yes, yes I’ll go on a date with you.” I leaned forward beginning the next kiss we shared. We were entirely too worried for nothing and it wasn’t too long after a few dates that Will was already working on having me become his Mrs. Halstead.

Jay Halstead was a great father to you, Y/N Halstead, and if you asked anyone if he was a good dad they would say that he's not just a good dad but a great dad. He has loved you ever since you were born and he thought he could spot anything since he was a detective but he was wrong and he found that out one night.
You were sick. You just felt run down and just overall felt like shit, especially when it came to playing your favorite sport, softball. Recently your entire 5th grade class had been going through a round of sickness. Some had the flu, some had a viral infection, and some just had a cold. You were lucky enough not to get anything until last week.
Jay had been busy with a case that he admits that he wasn't paying as close attention as he normally did. Even though he wasn't paying as much attention he did pick up some stuff like your lack of wanting to eat and you being really cuddly towards him, a movement that you only did when you were sick or getting sick. He wasn't concerned enough to call your uncle, Will Halstead, just yet but that would all change tonight.
You started to feel sick one Monday morning and it just progressed from there. Jay was in the kitchen preparing for his day at work and preparing your lunch for the day. He looked down at his watch and smiled when he saw that it would soon be time for your footsteps to start padding down the hallway. A few minutes went by and no sign from you which made him frown. “Wonder what the holdup is?” He asked himself as he put down what he was doing and walked to your room. He gently knocked on the door and usually he would get a response but he didn't. “Y/N/N it's time to get up for school.” He said using a soothing fatherly tone as he opened the door.
“Daddy?” You asked lazily looking up at him and he furrowed his eyebrows that's not like you.
“It's me, Baby Girl. It's time to get up.” He said coming to sit by you on your bed and just like a magnet you curled into him. He didn't think much of it, he just thought you wanted to be near him. “Are you ok?” He asked as he cuddled you and you nodded, you didn't want to inconvenience him.
“Yea I'm fine.” You lied easily. He didn't look convinced but went with it.
“Ok. We need to leave in 10 minutes so you need to get up and get ready.” He said and you nodded. He bent down and kissed your head and hugged you then he was getting up and leaving. Once he was gone you were sluggish to get up. It was like your movements were in slow motion and everything hurt but you powered through it. The time you got to the kitchen your father was already packing your lunch in your lunch box and grabbing your bag and waited by the front door. “Khloe and her mom are taking you to practice and I will pick you up after ball.” He said as he handed you some breakfast and your water bottle.
“Ok.” You said as you slipped on your shoes and then your backpack and took the lunch box from him. He nodded and then the both of you were out the door.
Once outside and in his truck that you loved so much you settled into the passenger seat and got comfortable. As you started to move you started to feel better and your dad picked up on this so the concern, he had this morning went out the window. You ate all your breakfast sandwich that your dad made that you loved and drank some of your water. He was really a good cook even though he doesn't like to admit it. The truck ride was filled with low music and quiet laughter and smiles. You definitely felt better after eating something. He pulled up to the school and parked and you got ready to get out. “Remember Khloe is taking you to practice and I will be picking you up.” He said and you nodded.
“Got it, Dad.” You added smiling and he smiled and nodded then you were getting out and opening the backdoor to grab your softball gear.
“I love you.” He said as he looked back at you.
“I love you too.” You said and then closed the door. He made sure you were in the school before driving off. You sighed preparing yourself to start the long boring day and the dreaded practice.
Throughout the school day you were back to feeling sluggish and your nose started to run. You also just wanted to lay down on something cold and take a nap. “Ms. Halstead, are you feeling, ok?” Mrs. Jean asked while everyone was at recess, you had been staying close to the bleachers and the students, which wasn't like you, you took a minute to respond but you nodded your head. She came over to you and sat next to you. It took a minute for you to notice she was there and you turned to look at her.
“I'm ok.” You said in a quiet voice.
“You look a little pale. Why don't you head to the nurse to lay down?” She asked in a concerning motherly tone; she did have 4 kids of her own. You shook your head.
“I'm really ok.” You said and she smiled softly at you.
“Ok. I won't push you. If you start feeling worse let me know and you can go to the nurse.” She said and you nodded at her and then she got up and left.
Lunch came and you didn’t feel like eating so you hardly ate anything. You left the rest in the lunchbox and went on with your day. The rest of the day you just dragged throughout the day not having the energy to do anything. When it came to gym class Mrs. Link let you set out because she could see how much you were struggling today. By the end of the day, you were feeling worse and you just wanted your dad but first you needed to get through softball practice.
“Hey, are you ready to go?” Khloe asked as she came up to you with her bag and gear. You looked at her smiling and nodded.
“Yea, I’m ready.” You said and she smiled and the two of you walked out. You grabbed your water bottle and downed half of it as you got to her mom’s car. Drinking something helped so you weren’t too concerned.
“Good afternoon, girls. Did you have a good day at school?” Khloe’s mom asked.
“It was alright.” You said and she frowned.
“You look a little pale my dear. Are you feeling, ok?” She asked as she looked at you.
“She hasn’t been feeling good since this morning.” Khloe said and you elbowed her. “What? I could see it when you walked in and didn’t say hi to me.” She said and you huffed and sunk into the seat. Her mother nodded but you knew she was still concerned. The car ride to the field was filled with car music and Khloe and her mom talking and laughing. You would comment when needed but you were just trying not to throw up. When you arrived at the field all three of you got out. You and Khloe grabbed your gear and you your backpack and walked over to the dugout and started to get ready.
You went through the motions of practice not really putting in the effort and everyone could see that which is why you had gotten pulled over to the side by Coach Ludgate. “Sweetie, are you feeling, ok?” She asked and you shrugged your shoulders.
“Yes.” You said and she looked at you in a concerned fatherly look. “No.” You admitted and he smiled softly at you and nodded.
“I can tell. You’re red in the face and you look pale. You also don’t seem as energetic as other times. Why don’t you go sit in the dugout out of the sun and cool off? Can’t have my best player collapsing on me.” He said smiling and you smiled back and walked sluggishly back to the dugout and laid down on the bench and closed your eyes. You don’t know how long you had your eyes closed but you then felt something cool being draped over your head. Your eyes shot open quickly and you came face to face with your dad.
“Dad?” You asked and he smiled, running a hand through your hair.
“Hey, Baby Girl. Thought I would come early and watch you practice. When I asked where you were they led me here.” He said and tears welled up in your eyes. “What’s wrong?” He asked as you sat up.
“I don't feel good.” You said quietly and he nodded, smiling softly.
“Let’s get you home. How long have you been feeling this way?” He asked
“Since this morning.” You said as you got up and grabbed your stuff and he nodded. He turned to look at your coach and he nodded and so the two of you made your way to his car and then home.
“Why didn't you let me know?” He asked as he threw your bags into the backseat.
“You were busy and I didn't want to disturb you or put more on your plate because you had a sick kid.” You said and his heart broke. For such a young kid you were smart and very generous of people's feelings.
“I would do anything for you.” He said and you nodded and sank into the cool leather of his truck. The ride home was quiet and uneventful; you had actually closed your eyes and fallen asleep. The music was down low so as to not disturb you. Jay was beating himself up, he should've seen the signs, he should've asked questions, he's a detective he should be able to pick up on things especially when it came to his own daughter. But you were just like him and you hid a lot of things well and you didn't let emotions show. By the time you got to the apartment you were out. He parked the truck and turned off the ignition. He sighed “Looks like I’ll be carrying you.” He said, chuckling to himself. He opened his door and got out then went over to the passenger side first grabbing your backpack and slung it over his shoulder and then he quietly shut the door and opened the passenger door. He quickly worked to get you unbuckled and then he picked you up, you threw your arms around him out of habit and buried your head into his neck. The moment your head touched his skin he knew how sick you were. You were warm despite having the ac blowing in the truck. As he situated you in his arms, he shut the door and locked it and started to head to the building.
“Good afternoon, Jay. I see you have a sleepy one.” Mrs. Mueller Quell, your elderly neighbor, and Jay smiled and nodded.
“Yea, she's not feeling good at the moment. Going to get her settled.” He said and she smiled and nodded.
“You should make her your famous chicken noodle soup. I know me and Grant love it.” She said
“I just might do that. We'll see you later.” He said and she smiled.
“If you need anything let us know. We've taken care of a few sick kids.” She said as she began to walk away to the mailroom.
“I will be.” He said as he got onto the elevator and pressed the button for the correct floor. He was amazed that you had slept through that interaction. As the elevator went up and eventually dinged, he walked out. In just a few quick long strides he was arriving at the door. He skillfully got his key out and unlocked it making sure to quietly shut it as he walked in. He sat your bag down and kicked off his shoes. He walked over to the couch and gently set you down but you had a grip on him like no other and he chuckled. He gently pried your grip apart and then laid you down, took your shoes off, then covered you up with a light thin blanket. He went into the kitchen to grab the children's Tylenol and pulled up the right dose and walked back into the living room. He hated to wake you up but he needed you to take it. “Baby Girl, can you wake up and take this for me? I promise you can go back to sleep.” He said as you opened your eyes and took the medicine and went directly back to sleep. He walked into the kitchen and put the now dirty cup in the sink. He then went to your backpack and there he sat your shoes down. He picked up your backpack and set it on the table and started to unpack it. At first it was all normal and he saw all the work that was sent home but everything was done and he smiled. You always finished your homework early; he had asked why and you responded casually saying that if you got it done early you could have more play time. He was shocked but he understood it and it was actually smart. As he was going through your backpack his phone started to ring. The shrill of the ringer was loud and he was quick to take it out of his pocket and answer it without looking at it just to get it to stop ringing and not wake you up.
“Detective Jay Halstead.” He said quickly.
“Well hello Detective Jay Halstead.” Hailey’s voice came through with a chuckle.
“Sorry, Hails. I didn't look at my phone. What's up?” He asked
“I just wanted to see if you and Y/N wanted to go out to a movie and ice cream.” She said and he smiled at that and looked over at you still sleeping. He began seeing Hailey when you were 9 years old and had just turned 10 years old. She was making the effort to connect with you and it was working.
“We're going to have to take a rain check on that. She's not feeling all that great. Didn't even practice at softball.” He said
“Oh man she must be bad off. That's not like her. She loves the sport.” She said and he smiled loving the thought that she actually paid attention to your interests.
“Yeah, she does.” He said, chuckling.
“I could pick some stuff up and come over.” She offered
“I would like that and she would too. She's asleep right now.” He said
“Anything specific you need?” She asked
“I think I'm out of children's Tylenol, just gave her the last dose, and cold medicine, do you mind getting that?” He asked
“Not at all! I'll be over there soon.” She said
“Thank you.” Jay said
“Anything for my boyfriend and his lovely daughter.” She replied and he smiled and chuckled and then they were both hanging up the phone.
When Jay got your lunch box, he pulled it out and opened and was shocked that there was most of your lunch still left. You love your food and would take any chance to eat it. All this just told him how sick you were. “Oh, Baby Girl.” He said, sighing. He got all of the stuff out and put the items that needed to be refrigerated in the fridge.
“Daddy?” You asked sitting up and he was over to you in a matter of seconds bending down in front of you.
“Hey, Baby Girl. What's wrong?” He asked and you looked at him. Your eyes weren't as bright as they usually are and you overall just didn't look great.
“I'm hungry.” You said and he smiled and ran a hand through your sweat soaked hair.
“Do you want some soup and crackers?” He asked and you nodded.
“Please.” You said and he smiled and nodded. He had taught you to be polite from a young age. Before he left, he grabbed the remote and handed it to you. You turned it on and turned on Disney+ and turned on Wizards of Waverly Place. You settled in as Jay went to the kitchen to see what soup he had on hand in the meantime. He grabbed the saltine crackers and then some canned chicken and noodle soup. He would have to go to the grocery later, he would've had Hailey pick it up but there was more he needed to get and he didn't want her to pay for his groceries. He quickly got to work on getting your food ready and when it was, he brought it into the living room and you sluggishly sat up and he could see this. He sat down and then gave it to you. You instantly cuddled into his side.
“Careful it's hot.” He said and you nodded and then started to eat. You ate about half of it and 3 crackers before you were handing it back to him and he was sitting it on the coffee table in front of you, you snuggled into him and he instantly cuddled you. As he sat there with you, he could hear now that you had become congested, he brought a hand to your forehead and frowned you were warmer than you were when he got you out of the truck. “You really don’t feel good do you, Baby Girl?” He asked as you snuggled into him more.
“No.” You said in a quiet voice and his heart broke. He kissed the top of your head.
“Hailey is on her way over with some medicine.” He said and you nodded but continued to snuggle into your father. It wasn’t 2 minutes later that there was a knock on the door and he was getting up to answer it but not without you whimpering out for him. “I’ll be right back. I promise. Hailey is here.” He said and you nodded and you let him get up but as he stood up and second later you were standing up and tucking yourself into his side.
“I don’t want to leave you.” You whined, tears welling up in your eyes and threatening to spill and a sniffle from you being sick and the tears.
“Ok ok you don’t have to.” He said as he picked you up and walked towards the door. You snuggled into him and wrapped your arms around his neck and legs locked around his waist. Yup you were definitely sick you were being super clingy. He got to the door and unlocked it then opened it and there stood his girlfriend/partner with bags of medicine and a cup holder filled with three drinks, milkshakes to be exact.
“Hey you two.” Hailey said and Jay smiled but you had already fallen asleep.
“Hey.” Jay said and leaned in to kiss her and she ran a hand through your hair. “I think she is asleep.” He said chuckling and she nodded in agreement.
“Well, she can have her milkshake later. I thought something cold would be nice.” Hailey said and Jay smiled as he led her in.
“You didn’t have to do that.” He said
“I wanted to. I love her like she is my own.” Hailey said having not seen his face since her back was turned to him as she put things away and your milkshake in the freezer. His face was one of love and appreciation.
“I can’t even begin on how to thank you.” Jay said and she shook her head.
“No need.” She replied as she turned around to look at Jay holding you and she practically melted right then and there.
“I’m going to try and go put her down. Then I will be right back out.” He said and she smiled and nodded.
“Take your time.” She said and he nodded and turned heading to your room. Jay walked down the hallway into your room he walked you to your bed and started to gently lay you down and you whimpered.
“No.” You whined as he laid you down and sat on the side of the bed.
“You’ll be much more comfortable here than on me. I promise. I’ll be in the living room with Hailey so I’ll be able to hear you if you call. Ok?” He asked and you looked at him tiredly and nodded.
“Ok. Tell her I said hi.” You said and it ended with a cough and he smiled as he ran a hand through your hair.
“I will. Now get some rest.” He said leaning up and kissing you on your sweaty hot forehead.
“Ok.” You whispered as your eyes closed and you were out like a light. He tucked you in and gave you your favorite stuffed animal and headed out of your room making sure to crack the door slightly. He looked at you one more time and then he was walking back to the living room.
“How is she?” Hailey asked
“She’s warmer than normal and she coughed which was new. She ate about half of her soup and 3 crackers before she was putting it down and snuggling into me before you got here.” Jay said
“What do you think it could be?” She asked and he shrugged.
“It could be anything. There has been some sickness going around her class but honestly don’t know.” Jay said as he grabbed your half-eaten soup and package of crackers into the kitchen. He put the bowl in the sink and the crackers back in the cabinet then he walked back into the living room, Hailey handed him his milkshake “Thank you.” He said and sat down and turned on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, a cop show that they were watching together. Jay slung an arm over shoulders and pulled her into him and they drank their milkshakes. They loved to comment on everything but it was mostly a show they didn’t have to really think about but with them both being detectives they ran the cases that were showing on the TV. They probably got about 3 hours into it, it was 8 PM, before you started to cough more and more and that concerned him. He had decided that he wouldn’t be going into work tomorrow and had let Voight know beforehand and he gave his approval saying family came first. “I’m going to check on her.” He said as he paused the show and Hailey nodded and sat up for him to go to your room. As he was walking to your room you started to cough more and more. He walked into the room and you were still sound asleep but coughing a really deep cough. He walked over and sat down on your bed and rubbed you back as you were turned onto your stomach. “Baby Girl.” He said and started to wake you up and all he got was a cough that he could feel wracking your body. “Hey, wake up.” He said as he started to pick you up and you snuggled into him.
“Daddy?” You asked followed by a cough.
“Yea, it's me. Hey, do you want to come into the living room with us? You coughing is worrying me.” He said and you looked at him and your eyes weren’t as bright as they were when you weren’t sick.
“Please.” You said and she smiled and got up and went into the kitchen to grab the milkshake. She put it in the microwave to soften it slightly and then walked back into the living room and handed it to you as she sat down. You took it but you were shaking and that concerned them both. Whatever you had zapped the energy out of you. “Thank you.” You said and took a sip of it and she smiled.
“Yea.” You said followed by a cough and he nodded and then he picked you up and took you into the living room. He was quick to dim the lights until it was semi-dark and Hailey was already making a spot for you between them. “Hi.” You said when you spotted her but it wasn’t as energized as before.
“Hi Sweetie.” She said with a smile as Jay sat down then he disappeared to grab more children’s Tylenol and come back in. He sat down on the other side of you and you somehow ended up more on him. “I heard you weren’t feeling good.” She said and ran a hand through your hair and you nodded snuggling more into your father and she smiled “I brought you a milkshake. Do you want it?” She asked and you looked up at your dad and he looked down at you and you nodded. You looked over at her and she could see the nonexistent light.
“You’re welcome, Sweetie.” She said
“Here, take this and wash it down with the milkshake.” Jay said and you nodded and said what you were told. Then they were turning their attention back to the TV as Jay pressed play. You watched it but didn’t pay any attention to it, not even finishing your milkshake. You were falling back to sleep and he was taking the cup out of your hands and putting it on the side table.
“She only drank half of it. She’s definitely not feeling well.” Jay said as you let out a cough.
“I hope she feels better soon. I hate seeing her like this.” Hailey said and Jay nodded.
“Me too.” He said
Around an hour later Jay was putting you back into your bed and he was bye to Hailey and he was heading off to get ready for bed and when they were done, they slid in and fell into a somewhat peaceful sleep. You coughed and coughed throughout the night and it seemed like it got worse when you were laying down. Jay being your parent had parent ears on all the time and they never turned off so when you stopped coughing during the night he was instantly awake and sitting up. He walked into the room and he was instantly kneeling by your bedside and he could see you breathing and he sighed but he wanted to wake you up just in case. “Y/N. Baby Girl. Can you wake up for me?” He asked as he petted your hair and you let out a cough and slowly cracked your eyes as best as you could but they were almost like caked shut and he could see that. “Oh, Baby Girl.” He said as he started to take the goop away from your eyes. As you started coughing again you started wheezing and that brought a new worry to your father that was new. It was time to call Will. “Come here.” He said picking you up and taking you into his bedroom and laid you down on his bed while he picked up his phone and unlocked it and pulled up his brother’s contact information and pressing call.
“I’m sorry for waking you up but no everything isn’t ok. Y/N is sick and at first, I could handle it but then she started coughing and just a little bit ago she stopped and now her eyes are filled with goop and she is wheezing.” Jay explained keeping watch over as you slept and wheezed.
“Jay? It’s 4 in the morning. Everything ok?” Will asked, voice full asleep.
“Has she been running a temperature?” Will asked
“She didn’t even practice?” Will asked
“She’s been running hot ever since I picked her up from softball practice where she was lying on the bench.” Jay said
“No, she was pale and sweaty and red in the face.” He replied
“Oh, damn she must be really sick. Go get a thermometer and take her temperature and tell me what it is.” Will said and Jay did just that. “Have you given her any medication?” He asked.
“No, not recently.” Jay said as he walked into this bathroom to retrieve one of many thermometers. “She had a dose of children's Tylenol when we got home and then at 8 PM.” Jay said as he grabbed it and then walked back into the bedroom. “Alright, I'm taking her temperature now.” He said and put it in your ear and you didn't move you were so sick you didn't even care.
“Has she thrown up any?” Will asked, already getting out of bed and getting ready to head over to the other Halstead household.
“No.” Jay said as the thermometer beeped. “102.2.” He read it out loud.
“It should've gone down with the children's Tylenol.” Will said, worrying about his one and only niece. “Let me hear her.” He said and Jay put the phone on speaker and put it next to you. You coughed and started to wheeze and Will sighed. “Let me grab some stuff from the hospital and I'll be right over.” Will said.
“Ok.” Jay said “We'll see you soon.” He said and then they both were hanging up the phone. Jay was worried and now Will was worried. He hated waking his brother up after he worked a 24-hr. shift but he didn't know what to do. Jay laid down next to you and shut his eyes.
30 minutes went by and he was jerking awake by a knock on the door and he was making sure you were breathing before he got up. He was surprised you didn’t wake up to the knock because you were such a light sleeper much like him. You coughed and were still wheezing and that broke his heart. He was quick to get to the door and open it to reveal his brother. “Hey, how is she?” Will asked as he walked in and Jay closed the door.
“Still wheezing and coughing.” He said as he led Will to his bedroom.
“Has she had anything to eat?” His brother asked and he nodded.
“Half a bowl of soup, 3 crackers, and half a milkshake.” Jay replied
“Normally she would eat everything. She has a fast metabolism.” Will said as they walked into the bedroom and you were in the middle of bed.
“That’s what I’m worried about. What did you have to get?” Jay asked
“I went and got a nebulizer with some medicine that will help with the wheezing and hopefully it’ll help with the cough as well.” He said
“What do we do about the coughing?” Jay asked as he stood arms crossed watching you and Will was looking at him.
“You need to be careful not to suppress a productive cough too much, unless it's keeping her from getting enough rest. Coughing can be useful, it can help clear the throat and airway of germs, mucus and dust. If it doesn't go away or comes with other symptoms like shortness of breath, mucus production or bloody phlegm then that could be the sign of a more serious medical problem and would need to be addressed.” Will said giving out medical information easily and keeping it to where Jay could understand it. Jay nodded glad to have a doctor for a brother.
“What should we do first?” Jay asked
“I wanna assess her and then go from there and that means unfortunately waking her up.” Will said and Jay said and nodded and went and sat down on the bed and began to wake you up. When you were awake and looked at him confused you then spotted Will and gave him a weak smile and he sadly smiled back at you. He could tell right away that you didn’t feel good. He approached you and sat on the other side of the bed. “Hey, Kiddo. I heard you weren’t feeling good.” He said in a sympathetic voice he used for his younger patients. You shook your head and cuddled into your father.
“Yea.” You said in a quiet voice and that wasn’t like you. You then coughed and coughed until you started gagging. Will was quick to grab the empty trash can by the nightstand and thrust it under just in time for you to expel everything in your stomach, which wasn’t much. Jay held your hair and rubbed your back.
“It’s ok, Baby Girl. Let it all out.” He said and once you were dry heaving you practically collapsed into your father exhausted. “That was new.” Jay said and Will sighed he hated seeing you in such a state, you were naturally a strong-willed girl much like your father and to see you dwindle down to nothing saddens him.
“I’m going to listen to you and take a couple of vitals. You don’t have to move from Jay, ok?” He asked
“Ok.” You said in a now hoarse voice. Having no energy you just sat there while Will checked you over, you actually started to fall asleep.
“Is she asleep?” Will asked and Jay looked down at you and your eyes were closed and head resting on his chest.
“She’s asleep.” Jay said, looking back up at his brother.
“She’s really is sick.” Will said and Jay nodded. “I want to get a dose of medicine from the nebulizer in her and I want her to be awake for that but if she falls asleep during it then it should be fine.” Will added and Jay nodded and once again he was waking you up and he felt so bad about it. When you were awake Will explained what the machine was and what it does and he could tell that you were listening but not fully there but enough to understand. He hooked the machine up and put the medicine in and then handed the piece to Jay who put it over your nose and mouth. At first you protested but when you started to feel better and not wheezing you embraced it and leaned into your father and started to fall asleep the brothers talked about whatever came to their mind mostly the recent Jayhawks game. Once the medicine was done, Jay, not having the heart to move you back to your room, tucked you into his bed and then the brothers were heading into the living room.
“How long do you think it’ll be before she gets better?” Jay asked
“I’m thinking and hoping in a couple days but it may take a week or two.” Will said and Jay sighed but nodded. Jay looked at his watch and saw that it was 5 AM. He looked up at his brother.
“I can either make us some coffee or we can try to get some sleep. Guest room is free.” Jay said
“I’m gonna get some sleep and I suggest you do the same.” Will said and Jay smiled.
“You’re the doctor, you know what is best.” Jay said a smile turning into a smirk and Will rolled his eyes but smiled. As they headed for the rooms Jay’s phone pinged and he looked at it. “Her school has been closed due to so many kids sick.” Jay said and Will nodded.
“That’s what needed to happen when all of this started.” Will said and Jay nodded in agreement. They walked into the rooms and Jay got into bed and somehow you sensed he was there because you were cuddling into him. He smiled and cuddled you kissing your head as he was doing so, he noticed that you weren’t wheezing anymore and the coughing had died down. Once he knew you were ok, he let himself relax and eyes closed and he actually fell asleep.
The next morning Jay was waking up and he was expecting you to be next to him but you weren’t and that made him confused until he heard the laughing coming from the kitchen and followed by your cough. He slowly got out of the bed and walked into the kitchen to find you and Will up to now good. “Good morning, Daddy.” You said in a hoarse voice when you spotted him and that made Will look over in his direction.
“Good morning.” Will greeted
“How are you feeling?” Jay asked and you shrugged. He could see your eyes were not as bright.
“Not great but not worse.” You said and coughed deeply and Jay was rushing over to you rubbing your back. After you were done you took a deep breath and nodded.
“You ok?” He asked and you nodded.
“I’m ok.” You said “We decided to make breakfast.” You said and he smiled and kissed your head.
“You’re actually trusting Uncle Will with the kitchen?” Jay joked
“Hey! I can cook.” Will defended
“No, that’s why I’m supervising.” You said throwing a signature Halstead smirk.
“Oh lord, good thing we have Firehouse 51 on speed dial.” Jay said and everyone laughed. The morning was filled with laughter and joking and eating and every now and then your coughs. By the afternoon you were in the middle of them passed out on the couch as they watched a random hockey game. By the end of the day Will had gone back home but he made Jay promise to keep him updated and he stuck to his promise. Throughout the next week you were getting stronger and light was coming back to your eyes. The coughing had subsided. Your school opened back up and Jay went back to work. You were actually able to get through a softball practice.
By week 3 you were back to normal. Your eyes were bright, you were eating like your normal self, and you were energized again. Everyone was currently at your softball game and of course you were winning. “She’s back to her normal self, I see.” Will said and Jay nodded.
“Yeah she is. I’m so glad about it too.” He replied
“She even had me worried.” Hailey said “I never have to worry about her, she is too much like her daddy that she doesn’t need to be worried about.” She added and everyone nodded in agreement. The crowd erupted in a cheer and they looked up in time for you to slide and steal home base to win the game. Everyone cheered and crowded around you. Once everyone cleared out and you grabbed your stuff you walked over to your dad, uncle, and Hailey.
“Great job, Kiddo!” Will said and brought you in for a tight hug.
“Thank you, Uncle Will.” You said and hugged him back.
“You did an amazing job, Baby Girl.” Jay said and hugged you after you got done with Will.
“You were amazing out there. I’m so glad you’re back to your normal self.” She said running a hand over her head and you smiled and looked up from your position from hugging your father and smiled at her.
“Thank you.” You said and then you snuggled into your father’s side and looked at Will. “Thank you for being Dr. Uncle Will.” You said and he smiled.
“Anytime, Kiddo. I hate seeing you so down.” He said
“We all do.” Jay said
You hated being sick and being down for so long. You hated not being up and doing something and you got that from your dad honestly. Hopefully you wouldn’t be getting that sick again but you never know what life would throw your way. Next time could be just a 24-hr. bug or it could put you in the hospital, you just never know.

Right??
I have very similar thoughts on this, like yeah I get it, they're good looking, they're nice, they look cute together or whatever, but character wise?? Yeah those are some good actors, but let's be honest character wise they weren't that extraordinary to obsses so much over them.
And yeah there's some charm and magnetism about characters who constantly try to stay on "the light side" or have a strong moral compass, but have you guys actually watch the show??? No character in the whole one Chicago universe, not one on the dickwolf universe to be fair, is completely moraly right or is completely clean or free of guilt, they all have shades of gray, not just Hank, he is just the most obvious/cynical about it, and if there's something the series show fequently is that sometimes the harder you try to stay "light" the easier you'll end up doing something with a darker result. Just take a minute to think about PD alone, Hank does some really dark things but at the end of the day it's for a greater good, and before anyone even try to argue that at least take the time to ACTUALLY watch the show, to ACTUALLY comprehend the story, not just drool over the actors appearances or whatever fan thoghts you have about your characters.
We're not saying Jay and/or Hailey are not good characters, they are, they have their own things that are quite good and enjoyable even likable, but honestly they are not that interesting/new/great. Sorry if that or the next things hurt anyones feeling but honestly they are the tipical fearless chaotic doom/fail romance every show has just because there wasn't enough drama. Which leads me to my next point.
The obssesion over Jesse/Jay is way bigger whenever he gets into a relationship no matter with who, same to Hailey/Tracy, like you can't not hide/lie about it, now is Upstead, but it once was Linstead or Upzek, whatever the name is, and it still is for some people, and yeah I get it it's fun to give a little more drama to shows adding romance here and there and shipping or whatever (personally I have never quite understood shipping characters but like yeah can be fun) and that's mainly because amatonormativity in our society, that can not see two people care/love each other so deeply without making it romantic, and let me tell you sometimes loving someone platonicly can be way deeper/important/bonding than romantic wise. So on that note I'd like to ask Upstead shippers/fans do you actually like the characters, like their actual traits/believes/ behaivoirs/decisions? or is it just because you get excited imagining all this romantic thrill that seems there's going on on the show just because TV knows romance is a good business?? Like really think about it, how many shows (whose main focus is not romance) have you watch just because there was a good romance/ship?
As @chicago-pd-is-weird said if you don't like the show for what it actually is, or for who it is actually about, don't torture your selves watching it just to see 3 minutes about the drama of 2 side characters, or for 3 seconds of your favorite actor, like trust me is not worth it.
Now if you have read all that and still think like your ship/character/favorite actor is worth suffering so much, and want to create fan content for them go ahead, but do not tag the things you don't like or that are not related, 'cause if you're doing it is because you like/love what you are creating, because you want to see that, not to get followers/likes/notes/reblogs whatever, 'cause you'll be filling other people's feed with content they might not want to see, or might not be interested on, and making them harder to find what they really want to see.

TL;DR - Why do Tracy (Hailey) and Jesse (Jay) from Chicago PD get so much attention for no reason? What’s the matter with other characters/actors?
Listen guys, I get it. I understand. Y’all love Tracy and Jesse. But come on - one post on Instagram and I see it several times?
It isn’t right that I get more posts about Jesse, Tracy, Jay, Hailey or Upstead (and whatever their ship name is for their actors) in general than for things I actually care about in Chicago PD. I am glad they’re living life and having fun and being friends or whatever they decide but I just don’t understand the hype.
Shipping characters is great. Actors, alright, as long as it’s not pushed onto them or pressuring them in any way. But I mean… where’s the love for everyone else? I rarely see appreciation posts for Elias Koteas (Al), Jon Seda (Antonio), Patrick John Flueger (Adam), Marina Squerciati (Kim), LaRoyce Hawkins (Kevin), Amy Morton (Trudy) or any of the other actors/characters aside from Jason Beghe/Hank Voight. Everything else under the Chicago PD tag is Jay/Hailey stuff…
I guess I’m just thinking it’s not fair that Jay/Hailey get all of this attention when we haven’t even gotten a gif set of the S11 finale with Hank and Al (except when I asked myself and @andgry4 made me a very beautiful one). But I had to ask!!! Everyone just cared about Tracy’s departure from the show and said it wasn’t enough when the whole episode was about her. :/
The show is about Hank and always has been. He’s the main character, period. How does everyone hate him? I love his complex character. Not to mention how much better and complex his character is than anyone in Chicago Fire. (Not bashing the actors, but the characters themselves.)
I personally never cared for Hailey and I understand loving one character a lot, but when Tracy/Jesse post something on Instagram, it’s a big thing? Why? Who cares? And why do I have to see it four times per day with 0 other posts about anything else PD under the Chicago PD tag? (The Instagram post wasn’t even about Chicago PD, they weren’t on set or anything, so why tag it that??)
I guess I’m just wondering what makes them so special over anyone else from the show? :/ It is obnoxious that so many people love them so much and “aren’t watching anymore” or are “finally free” because Tracy and Jesse left. If you didn’t like the show, why watch in the first place? I like Jon Seda, but I only watched one season of La Brea because it got kinda boring to me. I wasn’t “finally free” of it, I just stopped watching - simple as that. If you don’t like the show, quit watching. I don’t care who’s on it. It could be my favorite actor and yet if it wasn’t interesting, I wouldn’t watch it…
It’s incomprehensible to me why they’re so special when they’re not even on the show anymore anyways… I get the fanfics and don’t mind them. But things like this? One post on Instagram that they’re being friends? Crazy how much attention the fandom gives to this instead of anything else Chicago PD related. 🤷♀️

“You smell real good, love" They say while nuzzling their nose in your shoulder and you start to laugh because it tickles so much but they won't stop doing that to make you all giggly”
Being with Jay was nice. It was safe. It was cozy. You felt truly loved. And every night you were reminded of how much you loved him. Sure he’d come home late sometimes but you were always there to accept him into bed with open arms.
And days where he wasn’t working, he would find you at some point throughout the day and shower you with his love and affection.
You were laying in bed, tired from the extra work you had put into your job yesterday, just trying to get your back to rest up a smidge.
Jay was on his side, eyes closed from the nap he’d been taking for a bit, and you sighed, deciding to flip onto your side and maybe catch some sleep too.
As soon as you rolled over, Jay looped his arm around you, pulling you to his chest. His breath tickled your neck as he hummed, “You smell really good baby,” He murmured, rubbing his face into your shoulder.
A laugh left your lips as his breath tickled across your skin. “Stop-“ You managed through a giggle, attempting to cover your neck with your shoulder.
He chuckled softly, nuzzling his face further into your neck, peppering kisses along with them,”Mmm, no,” Jay muttered, too distracted by the beauty of your laugh to stop himself.
“Jayy,” You dragged his name out, moving a hand to the side of his face to push him back, rolling over to face him with a wide smile still on your face. “Enough,” You added, firmly but with no actual malice or annoyance behind your words.
Jay popped his bottom lip out, sending you big green puppy eyes with the pout. Lightly you leaned down, pressing a quick kiss to his lips. “That’s for you to promise you won’t tickle me again.”
“I make no promises.”

Before I go into this I want to say. If you're looking for friends on here, want to talk about writing, fandoms, couple cannon or not message me! I love to talk to new people. My writing and coming on here has slowed a bit but I'm happy to talk!
It was nice to go through all these and reread some of the stories I loved and see if anything was new.
Mutuals that I talk to often
@polkadotpenguin16 and I talk often. I follow her stories and we often preread each other's stuff. Also just a generally awesome human. If you like Sonny Carisi (SVU) she has quite a few stories out now. And she gives awesome recs!
@chicaotaku17 and I have recently started chatting. They recently started writing for Chicago One. They have started a light hearted HalsteadSister fic if that is your jam.

@felicitysmoaksx writes fanfics for Jay Halstead & Kim Burgess (Burgstead) for my followers who found me reading RRR. They also have a wide variety of stories for Connor Rhodes/ Sarah Reese that I love! It's my two favorite couples to read for One Chicago and they are both near impossible to find.
@tropes-and-tales-archives has awesome Sonny Carisi content that I reread probably a little too much. Whistle Down The Wind is probably my favorite at this point.
@bullet-prooflove writes for so many different fandoms and does a damn good job at it. Be warned if you start going through their masterlists you will be there for days. Totally worth the hyperfixation! I go back to comfort read all the time.
@plaidbooks SVU content- you will definitely spend some time on this page before you run out of things to read! Nick Amaro and Joe Velasco got it for me.
@svuwritings SVU mostly Nick Amarou and Sonny Carisi
@itsgrimeytime has great Rick Grimes content but I don't think they are actively posting anymore. Still, check them out!
@crossbowking Some of the best damn Daryl Dixon stories you will ever read. They capture him perfectly. Binge to your heart's content.

WIP WEDNESDAY
I was tagged by @avasrhodes, thank you so much! I haven't been writing much this week because work has been kicking my ass and I have to get ready to move, but here's a little bit of my Pirate AU, so maybe someone will kick me into writing more of it
"Are you really going to be off duty all night?"
"Is there a reason I'll need to be on duty? What are you all suited up for, then?" Jay shook his head with a small grin, turning his head to look at his friend over his shoulder. He'd known Adam for years, since before either of them had gotten assigned to the palace, since before his promotion, since they were just kids being taught to fight with wooden swords. If there was anyone he trusted to watch his back while he was otherwise occupied, it would be his best friend. "The party is just as much for me as it is for the princess, right? Of course I'm going to be off duty."
There was a grunt in response when he looked back at the mirror. Unfortunately, his own appearance took priority over anything else at that moment. As ridiculous as it seemed, he was being presented to the people of the kingdom. He was to be their leader, one day, however far in the future that might be, but they only knew him as a member of the guard. If things didn't go absolutely perfect, he might be accused of trying to take over the throne without even a rightful claim to it. The king had said he would take care of the complaints from the public in a situation like that, but it was a big risk, announcing the engagement at all.
He had to look the part, like the royal figure that he wasn't, and it had to be believable.
"Yeah, just don't let that crown go to your head, alright? No one is going to forget where you came from just because you're going to have some fancy title."
Rolling his eyes, Jay adjusted his jacket on his shoulders again and let out a slow sigh. He knew that better than even his best friend. His past would always be there, public knowledge, and he'd be the first member of the royal family that hadn't been born into it. He was the closest thing the king had to a plan, a charity case, an opportunity. It would be stupid to think he was anything more than a pawn in someone's endgame.

A/N: This is based off of the song, How do I do This? by Kelsea Ballerini. You don’t need to listen to the song to get this by any means but I recommend you do! It’s a song that’s been on my mind for a while and I just love Kelsea’s music as a whole! It got a little away from me so apologies for that! I’m also still working on requests and some more chapters of my Jay Halstead fic so please be patient with me.

Are you free Saturday? I know a spot
Those two texts come in rapid succession as you finish cleaning the store up. You’d usually try to avoid checking your phone so often in front of your manager, but by this time you were usually the only one left.
What did you have in mind?
You erase the message in-between organizing the new book shipment.
Saturday? That’s a little too close for me.
You erase that message while balancing the books for that day.
By the time you lock up the store and head home, you had thought up a couple million ways to respond before erasing them. Putting your key in the lock and you finally respond with a simple Yes.
Your next thought was right before you slid into bed for the night. Where the hell is your dress?
Specifically, your little black one that showed off all of your curves. The one that was probably lonely from being unused for so many years.
Having split from your husband over a year ago and trying to start fresh back in Chicago, you were worrying yourself into a spiral. You hadn’t been on a date since you were 22 and you were feeling out of place, getting back into the dating scene at 29.
You and your ex had grown apart from the moment your marriage started. You had done everything you could to keep everything together. You—being the one who made more money—had bought a big house. One that had room for you two to grow a family and have a backyard for a dog. It felt right at the time, maybe it would be enough so the walls didn’t seem like they were closing in.
You and your ex had been fine. But that’s all you were…fine. You finally convinced him to do therapy with you and, unfortunately, the final straw for you was when you realized that he loved you more at 23, then at 27.
You had filed for divorce not long after that. He claimed he hadn’t seen it coming, and fought you for the house. You gave into it, wanting him to just sign the papers and be done with it. In the end, when you signed your lease back in your home city of Chicago you finally checked the box “divorced.”
It had been quite the change, getting used to being back in the city. You contacted one of your oldest friends, Kelly Severide, to hang out and catch up.
It was at one of those meet ups that you met Kelly’s girlfriend, Stella Kidd, and the two of you hit it off instantly.
Now a year later, Stella and Kelly were getting ready to get married, and you voiced your thoughts to them about dating again. Stella said that she had a friend who was your type.
You had no idea what that meant, but after a few failed attempts at signing up for one of those awful dating apps, you gave Stella permission for her to give her friend your number.
The day after the first two texts were sent, he texted you again saying: Great! I’ll pick you up at 7.
You remembered at 22 being a little more cautious about a man picking you up for a date, but you trusted Kelly and Stella so you tried trusting this guy too.
It was hard, everything you’ve ever known about dating, relationships, and love had been ruined with the breakdown of your marriage. Now you wished it wasn’t affecting your thoughts this long after.
So is it any wonder that it’s 6:52 on Saturday and you’re trying to reassure yourself by saying you got this during your last looks in the mirror.
“You’ll be fine,” Kelly was saying over the speakerphone as you contemplated taking a shot to calm your nerves, “Do you think we don’t have your best interest at heart?”
“Kelly,” you say plainly, “It’s been years since I’ve been on a date. I’m gonna look so stupid stumbling over myself and what if he brings up my marriage? You told him about that right? How do I fucking do this? Is it wrong if I take a shot of something?”
“Stella,” you hear Kelly call from his end, obviously feeling like he needed backup, “she’s freaking out.”
“Yes I am.” You almost growl in confirmation, “I blame you both for this. What was I thinking?”
“Relax, girl,” Stella’s voice says over the line in a reassuring tone, “I got you. Look, I’ve known Jay for a while okay, and I’m sure you’ll charm the socks off of him.”
“Oh god,” you say, slapping a hand to your forehead almost dramatically, “I know he’s too good to be true. What have you done, Stella.”
“Breathe, Y/N,” Kelly says, his voice clear and unyielding.
There was a knock on the door. You jump slightly, looking up at the clock on the stove. 7:00 on the dot.
You curse, telling Kelly and Stella that he was there. They told you to have fun and they’ll call you later for details before immediately hanging up on you.
Cursing your friends once more, you open the door, and your breath lapses. You were going to kill Stella for understating his looks by saying he was “good-looking”.
He was much more than good-looking. He was gorgeous. His dark hair was cut evenly. His eyes were a mix of blue and green and freckles littered across his features. He was dressed for a date, his outfit lining the structures of his body. You feel slightly better about choosing your black dress for this, you may even want to wake up tomorrow with it on a floor that isn’t yours.
I’m ready, you tell yourself in your head.
And for the first time since this whole thing started, you believe it.
