Jasper, a town in Alberta, Canada, was recently taken over by a tragic wildfire. As of July 26, 2024 at least 30% of the town has been destroyed, 358 out of 1,133 structures, with 25,000+ residents being forcibly evacuated for safety.
The Alberta government had cut back millions in funding for wildfire preparedness programs, leaving residents of Jasper floundering with little to no support while the United Conservative Party of Alberta fumbled its way through an arbitrary Treasury Board process trying to justify their decision to wait seven days before responding to emergencies.

The wildfire that burned a third of the buildings in Jasper, Alta., to the ground is now under control, Parks Canada officials announced Saturday. "That means that the wildfire has received sufficient suppression action to ensure no further spread outside the defined perimeter of the fire," Landon Shepherd, a Parks Canada incident commander, told reporters. The wildfire perimeter is an estimated 278 kilometres, while the area is estimated to be at 32,722 hectares. Smoke and flames will still likely be visible inside the fire's perimeter into early winter, Parks Canada says.

Idk how many people here are from Canada but the town of Jasper had about 50% of it burn down recently and the fires are still happening.
Jasper has been important to many people I know, my family would often stop by for an evening on out way home from B.C. for food and some fun in the hot springs. my best friend is really into snow boarding and really wanted to take me and some other to Marmot Basin. And the place was a beautiful town that gave of the vibe of a quaint village which always made it feel very welcoming and I think most of us know it won't be rebuilt that way no matter how much we beg for it.
it's awful and a lot of people honestly saw it coming, a lot of people I know are surprised it didn't happen sooner. but regardless of that I wanted to wish those who have lost homes and places that were so important to them the best of luck, it hurts and I can only imagine how much more it hurts for those who lived there, visited annually with friends, or got married there, best of luck to you all here's to hoping for the best moving forwards

Every single news outlet talking about Jasper is going out of their way to mention how Danielle Smith was “holding back tears” and really emotional about it….
ma’am, your government keeps slashing funding for wildfire preparedness.
#like yeah the loss of Jasper is devasting#and i’m pissed as hell about climate change in general#but idk maybe if the wildlife preparedness budget hadn’t been cut to LESS THAN HALF of what it was five years ago#we would have had a few more resources to tackle this before it burned half of Jasper to the ground#idk tho just throwing things out there#cdnpoli#jasper wildfire#abpoli

You have to be joking. No one's talking about Jasper... except for the premier and the prime minister and every major news outlet in this country and in the States and the BBC and Reuters and the Associated Press and and and and... consider getting info from somewhere other than US-centric social media before embarrassing yourself by declaring publicly that something "isn't being talked about" just because you don't actually read the news. Anyway, I also love Jasper, and I hope they can recover.
You seem confused. Let's clear this up—
1. My post was hours before any of that. And my post was hours after they had evacuated, and days after the fire became a concern.
2. I read my local news and I know how reddit works. It's of you weird to assume I don't since I linked a local news article (one of the only ones at time of posting) in the replies and a reblog.
3. The post was gently pointing out Americanization. When I opened my social medias, including like Tumblr Dot Com (where I frequently see PSAs and GoFundMes and people generally raising awareness) I saw nothing about the disaster that was in my country's national park. I looked on tags and searched posts and found nothing on here that morning. It was sad and I was sad, so I posted about my experience at the time.
Begone rude anon. Go argue with people in a comment section somewhere else and let me be.
(Here is a link to the post, for curious onlookers.)

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she'd like to see bus tours organized for evacuated residents of Jasper so they can see the damage a wildfire did to their town for themselves and know what to expect when they're eventually allowed to return home. Smith made the comments on her provincewide call-in radio show on Saturday, where she also told listeners she'd like temporary housing arranged for residents so they can live in the town while they rebuild their homes. Parks Canada has estimated 30 per cent of Jasper's structures were damaged by the wildfire, with 358 of the town's 1,113 structures destroyed. Smith, along with Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland and other dignitaries, toured the evacuated town on Friday, where they passed the charred remains of the home where Ireland himself grew up. More than 20,000 people in and around the town nestled in the Rocky Mountains four hours west of Edmonton were ordered to evacuate late Monday night due to fast-moving wildfires. Smith notes temporary housing was also used during the reconstruction of High River, Alta., after it suffered devastating floods back in 2013.

My entire province is on fire again. Jasper National Park, our park in the Rockies, is burning to the ground. All of its history is in flames. Fires are popping up every day and we dont have the resources to fight them.
I can no longer remember a summer without most of it being obscured in smoke.

This was a beautiful place to live and visit. I am heartbroken that Jasper is on fire. There has been no loss of human life so far but it was rich in wildlife. The choking smoke and heat from the fires have been disastrous and is making it difficult for the firefighters and other support people to fight back the fires. My thoughts are with you all.

I wonder if characters who are no longer alive, but are designed (Hope and Adamant's grandparents, Jasper's parents, Diamond's parents) will appear in the comic e.g.: in flashbacks or something like that? I won't lie, Jasper the First is absolutely beautiful, I would like to see more of him!
We have plans to do that with Jasper's parents and Diamond's parents. We'd really like to show Hope's grandparents but we don't have a solid idea of where to fit that in. There's a couple places we could do it. - Cat
