i'm just so tired of every summer being a shitshow. i grew up going to jasper every second weekend in the winter, i love that town. i know people who live there, people who are displaced currently and who might not have houses after tonight. i remember the fort mac fire in 2016 and how devastating that was, and now we're seeing that in multiples across the province every year to the point where there's almost no room to grieve over every single one of them
i am so sick of people not caring until the smoke hits them. i am so sick of people saying trudeau is ordering the fires when daniel smith is RIGHT there, when she cut funding to firefighters during a province wide state of emergency. i'm so lucky to live far enough away from the forest protection area that i don't have to worry about being evacuated or losing my home, but there have been moments where i've wondered if i should pack a bag
my grandfather has copd and has to live in this smoke. i'm scared of what breathing in this much smoke is doing to my own lungs, let alone the lungs of infants, the elderly, and those with respiratory illnesses. i cannot fathom how people can live in alberta and not take the climate change issue seriously. this isn't going to stop anytime soon. this year, fire season started earlier than i think it ever has. it's just gonna get worse.

Some residents of the Dene Tha' First Nation in northern Alberta have been forced to leave their homes as a wildfire moves closer to the community. A critical evacuation order was issued by the Alberta Emergency Management Agency late Friday night for the community of Chateh, Alta., formerly known as Assumption, 91 kilometres northwest of High Level, Alta. Emergency officials said in the alert that a wildfire burning southeast of Chateh, near Basset Lake, is burning north toward the community. "Everyone in Chateh must evacuate immediately," the alert said. "Gather medication, documents and supplies to be away from home for seven days or more." It is the third time this summer that residents have had to flee from wildfires.

Just saw a thread of people on TikTok blaming Canada and the Canadian people for the poor air quality in NY and the east coast
Like you’ve got to be shitting me right now? Are certain people that delusional?
Be for fucking real because people are losing everything! entire towns are burning to the ground, every province is on fire and there are certain people in the United States blaming us?
What do they think we’re doing? Going around lighting trees in fire for fun?

Though 18 indigenous families lost their homes, rain has finally come to northern Alberta. It's been called the worst fire season on record.

I hope all of my followers and mutuals that are being impacted by the fires in Canada are staying safe and healthy. Where I live, the sun is orange and the air is hazy. So good luck out there and take percautions !!

This is Alberta, Canada. This is my province right now (May 7, 2023, 11:00pm MST). There are 105 active wildfires, 25 of which are in my local forest area. Six of those, including the one by my house, are out of control. Almost 30,000 people have been evacuated from their homes due to wildfires this year. This is a wildfire season that started early and exploded, spreading faster than the province can respond. Resources are thin, people are scared, and the weather is against us.
I am currently an evacuee. I was evacuated at 4:00pm on Friday due to a wildfire that started less than a mile from my home at 10:30am. Since Friday, it has grown from the 3 hectares it was when we evacuated to around 1700 hectares. I know personally two people that have completely lost their homes, and the wind is supposed to turn around tomorrow, which means there is a not-so-small chance I may lose mine.
Seven years ago, virtually to the day, I was the one inviting people into my home for shelter after the fire in Fort McMurray began. Now I am on the other side of that door, not knowing whether I will have a home to go back to. Waiting for reassurance from a government that... oh right, demolished our ability to fight wildfires.

I'm gonna admit I'm peeved about people online only talking about the wildfires now that its affecting the east. There's been fire and smoke in BC and Alberta since April. May had a few particularly bad and smokey weeks, but I didn't see anyone talking about it but local newspapers
But Ontario's smokey? Quebec's smokey? NEW YORK is smokey??? Oh man time for news! Time for youtubers to talk about it! Time for tumblr to make memes about it! Wow! The EAST is on fire? Now THAT'S somewhere people care about!!!! Eastern Canada? Eastern America? AMERICA? IS ON FIRE? OGHHDHHFH TIME TO PAY ATTENTION
Like I know it's a good thing that we're talking about it. It's good people are paying attention to climate change and are spooked. But....ugh. People online just do not care until it reaches the East or it heads south. (And even then, it was smokey in Western America but no one talked about it then either...the only person I saw talking about it was a friend I have in Wyoming—no one else)
Shit, man, I remember this happening when the 2019 wildfires got bad too. No one talked about how smokey and shitty it was until it got smokey in the east coast, too. And I get that it's partly because it reaching ALL across the continent makes it a bigger deal—it had to travel far—but...still. Like, it didn't feel like they were talking about it because it was significant smoke that travelled significantly far. It felt like they were talking about it because it was affecting them.
This is especially true this year. Because the smoke they're experiencing is from THEIR OWN fires. I'm not seeing Alberta or BC brought up in many articles, and I'm not seeing anyone online talking about us.
2019, 2020, AND 2021 all had very smokey periods in my city, because the fires were bad. Last year was the first summer since 2019 I've had that only had a few days of smoke—I was relieved to be able to have open windows and fresh air in the hot summer days.
The only year anyone talked about the fires was 2019, though.
1 of 4 bad years.
It sucks.

the first “haha blame canada for the smoke” jokes were funny and i DID laugh but. now i’m seeing a disturbing amount of people genuinely saying that canada is fine, that the crisis is over, that it’s “just a few wildfires” and that “we get them every year”
IT’S NOWHERE NEAR OVER. there are over 70 active wildfires in alberta alone, thousands displaced, homes destroyed. the air quality canada-wide is abysmal. idk i think i’d find the jokes funny still if people were also taking us seriously instead of blaming us for some bad air and ignoring the thousands of people who are in danger right now. i’m lucky enough not to have been evacuated but 17k+ people in my province have already, it’s an actual state of emergency over here.
you can joke about it just also take it seriously? i’ve been joking since day one to not be freaked out by the fact that my province is on fire, and fortunately my loved ones have also taken it seriously, even those who don’t live here. i just wish others would hold the same energy instead of brushing it off like we’re fine and not dealing with an actual crisis.

Daaaani, you and Jules okay over there??? I heard about the fires and i'm thinking of you two <3 :(
Hi lovely <3 Thank you so much for thinking of us, we're okay though. We live fairly close to downtown in the big city so we're at very low risk from any of the actual fires. Our main issue is when the wind blows a certain way the smoke is very acrid and sets off my asthma, but overall we can't complain.
It's very scary, though, and we've been following all the updates and orders closely. So far over 30 thousand people have been evacuated and there still hasn't been any rain so everything keeps getting worse. So many people need help, and their pets too - we donated some cat food and supplies yesterday but it wasn't a lot considering the scope of everything, and there wasn't a lot already in the donation bins.
I was going to post a couple of donation links here, just in case anyone is reading this and wants to help, but I literally can't find one for helping the people that have been displaced so far. Red Cross doesn't have a page, Salvation Army doesnt have one... this is really weird.
Anyway again thank you for thinking of us <3

My province is burning
Its dry and hot, there are 79 fires and 19 are out of control
The nearest fire is less than 50km away, and its size is 400 hectares
Evacuation notices are insane, up to 20,000 (I think) people are being evacuated and countless others have lost their entire homes and livelihoods
My province is burning, and its a game of waiting to hear if my family and people I know have to grab what they can and get out
Even when I go home from visiting family, I’ll be within an hour or hours of a threatening fire
My province is burning and I’m scared for other people who have lost everything, I’m scared that I’ll have to pack a bag and leave
We need rain, whatever or whoever you believe in, pray for rain
