Sashiko Jacket
1850-1899 (Meiji Era)
Japan
Sashiko is a quilting technique that uses a running stitch to reinforce and prolong the life of a textile or to join together recycled pieces of cloth into a new garment. Japanese farmers used the technique to create warmer and more durable fabrics, and decorative sashiko stitching developed from this practical function. This robe’s embroidered design is dominated by three variations on the pattern of interlocking circles, called shippō-tsunagi. The bottom band features a design of waves.

you know im unable to shut up when i have any opinion on zelda (though i try and have thus far succeeded at not commenting on any other concept from the darn book)- i find most totk ganondorf concept art worse than what we got to insulting even (of those i have seen) ..... this one though

much more the one in the background than the one up front, still at least he has the collar and the weapon we saw in the first trailer of things that never happen in the end (like so much else)
#ganondoodles talks#zelda#it looks like he got actual shoes in the bg one#which i like#also the big flowing robe is jsut cool as fuck#i like old japanese aesthetic but i still dont think it fits at all in totk#like its so clearly done to other him from the gerudo despite wearing their symbol all over#idk it looks so much more unique and memorable#sorry but totk gan normal looks a lil boring though i like the pattern in the robe#and his deeeemon form looks more like they tried to do demise again but not quite#like yeah lets use the design things on the uncool and forgotten and possibly retconned villain#and staple it too the much more known one :)#like yes he looks different from the gerudo still and very much still japanese in this concept#but it .... just kinda looks more unique and interesting to me#like in an either go all the way or leave it kinda way#yes i am biased#i love both demise and gan#anyway- i am still a prisoner of art (cant draw weeeee)#(plus IRL stress with my parents and weather change thus migraine yippiiie)

So I finished the first story, got it into a google doc, gonna run through it one more time to make sure it doesn't read too janky before I move onto the next story
Anyway, took it a while to actually feel like a Mononoke story (for me at least), but it did get there by the time I got to the end
Also Kusu loses his robe somewhere in there and it's never explained why? Or if it is, I missed that part?
Anyway
#mononoke#mononoke book#adventures in japanese#mononoke kusuriuri#cowards didn't want to animate shirtless kusu so they hid it in a book instead lol#(im not clear on if he was out of all his clothing or if it was just the robe and he was still wearing pants...the words they used could go#either way with it tbh)#but at bare minimum#shirtless kusu#yeah

Welcome back to our final day of Hotsui Matsuri! I, Star, felt like it was over too fast -cries in shoujo- but it’s all good, we’ll have more content to give you next year too! For now though, we’ll end this year in a fashionable exit as I take you on a short tour of Japan’s traditional fashion trends. From how to wear a Kimono to when to Yukata I got chu! @childoflegend replied: NO because when Shinoa was like “lol I can body you” to Shi I was like ?????? HE’S ONE OF THE STRONGEST ANGELS IN CREATION, wdym this 16 year old girl can defeat him just cuz she was one of his experiments 😭
NO SERIOUSLY-! like you mean to tell me the FIRST PROGENITOR. GODS FAVORED ANGEL. LITERALLY LUCIFER IN ALL BUT NAME- is losing to this???? they don't give us a reason for Shinoa being as strong as she is other than 'experiments' like how the fuck?? and why the hell would shi make a girl strong enough to repel HIMSELF- mUCH LESS HOW???? and legit he has not had a single victory since he first tried to take yu and mika and the manga expects us to still think of him as a threat????? how??? what happened to my sassy and teasing first progenitor that blew everyones shit when he first appeared and was named???
#and what the hell is with him constantly being drawn in only the greek robes now???#even in the furthest flashback????? like. WH Y???? a#and you cannot tell me his actual name is fucking SIKA MADU#like. WHA T???? WHAT ANGEL FIRST OF ALL AS A LAST NAME#AND SECOND WOULD HAVE A JAPANESE ONE???#the manga is a coward for not taking their christian themes and rolling with it#they literally have made shi lucifer but refuse to give him the name#OR MAYBE THEY SHOULDVE STUCK WITH HIM BEING THE FALLEN ANGEL OF MICHAEL AND MAKE A STORY ABOUT THAT#he's just not threatening anymore because the manga never gives him a chance to win nor to show why he is strong#he is constantly getting beaten down and its stupid#they ruined his and crowley's character and these are legit both of my babies#like i have so much work into them and this is how the manga treats them??#nah#naaaahhh i am captain now#manga is mine now i control the canon

The D. Gray Man Crows are all supposed to have exceptional combat skills, Kanda even states they all start training in early childhood, and they use a combination of martial arts and magic.
But what I could never figure out is why they wear the heavy, red ceremonial robes.

You know, the ones in this scene. Seems like a super impractical choice. Even if they can use magic, why would a martial artist wear something so bulky that could potentially hinder (possibly fatally) their movements? Not to mention the mask and hood restricting visibility.
But then I thought of Cho in Castlevania:
If Cho can fight in Heian period dress, then sure. Mystery of the Crow ceremonial robes solved, I guess.
Now I really want to see Crows fighting like this 'cause I can watch this animation of Cho fighting all day.

Robe (Kosode)
Early 17th Century
This sumptuous robe is among the earliest extant kosode (garment with small sleeve openings). The natural scenery of Japan’s coast, with its beaches strewn with shells and sea grass, inspired the delicate embroidered design. The foundation fabric, woven in an intricate key-fret pattern with floral motifs, was likely imported from China in its white, undecorated state. It was then resist dyed to achieve the effect of irregular sandbanks, and the marine motifs were embroidered on top. The alternating bands of light blue were further embellished with gold-leaf accents.
