Issen Yoshoku in Kyoto, Japan Okonomiyaki, the pancake-like dish cooked on a teppan grill, originated in Osaka but is ubiquitous throughout Japan. Yet few diners realize that this staple evolved from a simpler dish. Issen yōshoku, made of a loose batter with chopped green onion, strips of meat, and a Worcestershire sauce dressing, has gone all but extinct since World War II, eclipsed by the popularity of okonomiyaki, to be missed only by a few. Issen means “one sen coin,” in reference to an obsolete currency, while yōshoku refers to Western fare. In short, this was meant to be an affordable dish for the working-class. Back then, the general public considered any food that used flour, then known as “Meriken [American] powder,” or sauce Western. Street vendors in Kyoto often sold this humble pancake wrapped up in newspapers.  To bring back the nostalgic dish, Tatsuo Kinoshita founded the aptly named Issen Yoshoku restaurant. His rendition consists of wheat flour, bonito flakes, Kujo leek, egg, pickled ginger, tenkasu (crunchy bits of flour batter), konnyaku (devil’s tongue jelly), chikuwa (fried fishcake) and Wagyu beef, dressed with a special blend of Worcestershire sauce. Not only does Issen Yoshoku serve a now-rare dish, but is also a popular hideout full of kitsch ornaments, from a Taisho-style parody of the iconic Coppertone advert to bromide photographs of movie stars, tiny erotic statuettes to realistic kimono-clad mannequins. Each table is decorated with such retro ephemera, including matchbox labels, pochi-bukuro envelopes and Astro Boy figurines. “I know me too and I’m so happy you're here with me (Y/N).” Hinata told them the two came up to the restaurant's entrance. It was a nice restaurant which both Hinata and (Y/N) had been wanting to go to for quite a long time now. Apparently it was a retro American diner like the ones in all the American movies.

“So what are you going to get here?”

“I don’t know yet (Y/N), but you know what I think we should do for sure” Hinata said, his eyes lighting up. Hinata clearly had an idea which he for sure knew that (Y/N) would enjoy to the bottom of their heart.

“What might that be” (Y/N) said as they played dumb, despite already having guessed in their head what Hinata wanted to do with them.

“Let’s share a milkshake” He said with a smile that reached his eyebrows.

“That sounds great Sho, but here’s a good question Chocolate or Strawberry?” (Y/N) said

“I’ll let you choose, I can’t because both are so good” Shoyo said.

“Alright then I choose (Y/C)”

“Sounds amazing let’s head into the diner, shall we” Hinata said and stretched his hand out towards (Y/N) who took it with grace and beauty. The two walked into the the diner for a well deserved dinner since Hinata had gotten onto the Japanese national Volleyball team and was now on his way to living his dream his being a star athlete and on Japans national team.

-Some of Y/N’s favorite shoots are the wedding shoots. The vintage one was absolutely one of her favorites. Kenma had some of her proofs blown up and framed ♥

-Osamu and Kuroo have a deep love for 50s style diners and cars. They’re total nerds for it; so when Y/N found that restaurant she practically blubbered like a baby. Kuroo plans on going to America to help Y/N with her work in a few weeks. He really has never been to Beverly Hills and the two plan to “attempt” to blow a hole in Kenma’s pockets ;)

-#himikoistrash pass it on! lmao. Y/N really misses spring time in Japan. Especially the cherry blossoms, but she’ll just have to make due. Himiko is actually very difficult to work with; and Akaashi won’t let anyone assault his person unless they are Kiyoko, Yachi, and Y/N.

-Oikawa didn’t want Y/N to go, he feels like he doesn’t work nearly as well if she isn’t there for him.

-We love supportive besties! Because Kuroo and Osamu aren’t there to handle Y/N’s appointments, Kenma works on the go so he can be at all her shoots.

-Atsumu gets extra salty when he finds out his own twin loves his models more; but that’s because he hasn’t yet been blessed by the beauty that is Y/N

-Ushijima misses having Y/N in Japan, because she does a better job at running his social accounts. He can’t seem to get the hang of it. And she’s a really good friend to him. ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO DEALING WITH OIKAWA.

-Since the Press Conference, Hajime started following Y/N on her socials and liking her posts. Sometimes he’ll post a comment or a smart quip. Oikawa has only just recently noticed and he is not happy about it...

there are several American themed diners in Japan but this one in particular seemed to be a popular spot amongst Japanese lolitas as they’ll go here in retro themed coordinates and take photos with burgers and milkshakes

and obviously contextually it’s not a 1:1 equivalent with what I’m discussing and if an American non Japanese person inverse this it could very quickly become very fetishy and racist but it’s silly to think that someone making ASMR snack videos using pocky or ramune is committing a Great Sin
