More than 30,000 people in Japan died of COVID-19 in the first year after most coronavirus-related guidelines were lifted in May 2023, a figure over 14 times higher than deaths caused by influenza during the same period, government data showed Thursday.
Coronavirus infections led to 32,576 deaths during the 12 months, with those aged 65 or older accounting for 97 percent of the total, while the number of influenza fatalities reached 2,244, according to the health ministry's vital statistics.
After the virus was downgraded to the same legal status as influenza on May 8 last year, the government removed guidelines, including the seven-day quarantine period for those who tested positive, to facilitate the normalization of social and economic activities.
"Each of us has to think about how we can lessen the number of victims in Japan as we face an aging society," said Hitoshi Oshitani, a virology professor at Tohoku University.
The government discontinued financial support for coronavirus treatment and prevention on April 1.
The coronavirus continues to mutate, forming new variants that remain highly contagious and spread rapidly. In 2022, 47,638 people died after contracting the virus, as the Omicron strain became prevalent. The death toll dropped to 38,086 in 2023, aided by the effects of vaccination and natural immunity, according to the data.
"In order to reduce the number of deaths while continuing social economic activities, the government should provide financial aid for the elderly to take tests and receive vaccines," Oshitani said.
Fatalities for the January-April period of 2024 were compiled from preliminary data.

So I kinda already have ideas on the apex mascots with one of them being a cat that watches over the train ways. They would be based on Tama the stationmaster cat, because they should be immortal. The human with them was a station worker and would be a caretaker of the cat, which I believe is currently Nitama.
i loved this i had to
sometimes a family is a stationmaster cat, the railway worker assigned to watch that cat, a kid that got lost in a panic, and the living mascot version of the aforementioned cat who’s adopted them all
#click for quality cause mobile is stupid#semisolid ocs#fuwa fuwa pandemic#ngl I LOVE the fact that there’s a cat in charge of a railway in Japan

Am planning a trip to Japan in November. Does anyone have tips on what shops I should check out for Hunter x Hunter merch, especially Killua and Gon, but anything Hunter x Hunter?
I know of course there are the Jump stores, but this will be the first time I’ve visited Japan, so any tips are appreciated!
#Japan holiday#personal#just doing major tourist places as this is my first visit#had a trip planned before the pandemic but had to cancel everything when the borders closed and this is the first chance I’ve had to replan

oh my god. a manga where everyones actually wearing masks???
edit: NEVERMIND jumped the gun here it was just for one scene cos they were at a nail salon 😭
edit 2: hmm actually. depending on how recently this manga was drawn it could just be reflective of how not everyone wears masks. the customers are wearing masks in the salon but outside usually not but Sometimes. they are
edit 3: I WAS RIGHT??
#in an era where i feel like there was a VERY short period (in western fandom at least)#where masks and covid were even mentioned in fic and art#before it dropped off completely and all fiction lived in a fantasy universe without covid...#BRO I GOT TRICKED#hmm iirc wearing a mask in japan isnt required outside anymore. so that would track#but also maybe the artist just didnt want to draw masks all the time LMAO#ok ill be honest at this point i think i just misread the situation 😭 man it would be interesting for someone to like.#draw masks all the time..... the elusive artist that likes to draw masks more than faces#i should practice drawing people with masks...#MY HEART CANT TAKE THIS ANYMORE LMAO#ok now im Really sure its just a case of wanting to show the main characters faces and not wanting to draw masks all the time#two characters have met outside for the first time and theyre both wearing masks#ok theres another bit where a character says 'good thing the flights are running again'#which i must assume is a reference to international travel being restricted at the beginning of covid#so wow.... i was right..................#idk when this was released but it must have been drawn closer to the beginning of the pandemic#the manga is internet love by urino kiko btw#hmmm it says released 2023.. thats the tankobon tho idk if it was serialised and when that happened#ok yeah serialised from late 2022... thats quite far into the pandemic actually. interesting

aw, when i was ordering the albums they said "usually ships out by the release date", so i was excited about that, but then the release is SOON and they still haven't shipped it so i guess something happened or maybe they had a whole lot or orders, and now i see that they changed it to "usually ships in 3-7 days". a lot of orders then, i guess! u_u
#shrimp thoughts#i sort of miss the days when i had to wait over 3 weeks for an order from japan to arrive. pre-pandemic i mean#catch/opcd spoiled me ROTTEN with packages arriving in ~10 days and then one of my recent orders from japan took like... less#than a week? to arrive? and so i got my hopes up. the most dramatic canine sigh you can imagine

Time to bring humanity back to the classroom
COVID 19 has had a profound effect. It really goes without saying. But I am not talking about the heart-shattering loss of life or the cabin fever inducing 3 years we spent locked in our homes. I am talking about the way business is conducted and how foreign language training has evolved here in Japan. With an increased acceptance of video meeting software such as Zoom, Teams or Meet, the classroom shifted into the virtual world as well.
Companies were forced to move the office to people's homes while the pandemic raged and after companies grew to accept that style, many have stuck to Work From Home. Nikkei Asia estimates that nearly 40% of workers are still doing a hybrid style of work (link), saving transportation and even electricity costs for businesses. This shift to video meetings also impacts on the number of business trips as communication can be achieved for a fraction of the cost. This research positively talks about how 64% of companies still find business travel important, but that means that 36% don't.
Of course, what I am leading up to here is that this has impacted the general attitude towards studying foreign languages, particularly English. More private students or companies are turning to more reasonably costing online English training meaning there has been a step back from the beneficial environment of face-to-face English lessons. Aside from the obvious lack of technical issues that sometimes crop up, there are many benefits to a more intimate training environment. A teacher can have quicker reaction times to questions or problems and has a better capability of reading learners' body language. There is a better sense of connection between all members when you are in a live environment, with more live tools at the teacher's disposal. Last, but not least, there are less chances of succumbing to distractions such as pets, children or that temptation to turn the TV on. This website also talks about motivation and focus as a couple of benefits of being in a classroom as some other potential benefits.
Companies offering English training need to embrace a commitment to quality lessons with practical contents set up in a way that is enjoyable for the students. And most importantly, we need to bring the humanity back to the English study environment and get back in the same room. The teacher needs to work closely with the students to help them realize their goals and use all the tools and signs at their disposal. This is at the heart of what Lowrey Global Consultants strives to do.
