The world's oldest known person, French nun Lucile Randon, has died aged 118, a spokesman told AFP on Tuesday.
Randon, known as Sister Andre, was born in southern France on February 11, 1904, when World War I was still a decade away.
She died in her sleep at her nursing home in Toulon, spokesman David Tavella said.
"There is great sadness but... it was her desire to join her beloved brother. For her, it's a liberation," Tavella, of the Sainte-Catherine-Laboure nursing home, told AFP.
The sister was long feted as the oldest European, before the death of Japan's Kane Tanaka aged 119 last year left her the longest-lived person on Earth.
Guinness World Records officially acknowledged her status in April 2022.
Randon was born in the year New York opened its first subway and when the Tour de France had only been staged once.
She grew up in a Protestant family as the only girl among three brothers, living in the southern town of Ales.
One of her fondest memories was the return of two of her brothers at the end of World War I, she told AFP in an interview on her 116th birthday.
"It was rare, in families, there were usually two dead rather than two alive. They both came back," she said.
She worked as a governess in Paris -- a period she once called the happiest time of her life -- for the children of wealthy families.
She converted to Catholicism and was baptised at the age of 26.
Driven by a desire to "go further", she joined the Daughters of Charity order of nuns at the relatively late age of 41.
Sister Andre was then assigned to a hospital in Vichy, where she worked for 31 years.
In later life she moved to Toulon along the Mediterranean coast.
Her days in the nursing home were punctuated by prayer, mealtimes and visits from residents and hospice workers.
She also received a steady flow of letters, almost all of which she responded to.
In 2021 she survived catching Covid-19, which infected 81 residents of her nursing home.
Randon told reporters last year that her work and caring for others had kept her spry.
"People say that work kills, for me work kept me alive, I kept working until I was 108," she told reporters in April last year in the tearoom of the home.
Although she was blind and relied on a wheelchair, she used to care for other elderly people much younger than herself.
"People should help each other and love each other instead of hating. If we shared all that, things would be a lot better," she said at the same meeting with journalists.
But the Catholic nun had rejected requests for locks of hair or DNA samples, saying that "only the good Lord knows" the secret of her longevity.
It is likely that France's new oldest person is now 112-year-old Marie-Rose Tessier, a woman from Vendee, longevity expert Laurent Toussaint told AFP.
But Toussaint warned that it was always possible an even older person had not yet made themselves known.
Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 in Arles, southern France, at the age of 122 holds the record for the oldest confirmed age reached by any human. _________________

everyone on earth. Augustus Caesar had numerous illegitimate children, and the resultant dilution of the divine right of kings is what slowly destroyed the roman empire.
Lucile Randon's age makes her the closest we have to a firstborn, so I'd go with her
trying to figure out the funniest crackpot stance on who is the current Roman emperor, and accepting suggestions (tenuous historical justification required)

Who is the Oldest Person Alive? Discover the Secrets of Longevity
Have you ever wondered, who is the oldest person alive today? The title of the oldest person in the world has long been a fascinating topic, with people living longer than ever thanks to advancements in healthcare and lifestyle improvements. As of 2024, the current oldest person alive is María Branyas Morera, a supercentenarian from Spain, born on March 4, 1907. She officially became the oldest verified living person in January 2023 after the passing of Lucile Randon, a French nun.
María Branyas Morera's Life and Longevity
María Branyas Morera’s life is a testament to resilience and longevity. Born in the United States to Spanish parents, she returned to Spain when she was a child. Now, at the age of 117, she lives in a nursing home in Catalonia. Despite her advanced age, she remains mentally sharp and active, attributing her long life to a mix of healthy habits, maintaining strong family relationships, and never losing her sense of humor.

The Secret Behind Longevity
Understanding who is the oldest person alive often raises questions about how some individuals live far beyond the average life expectancy. Factors that contribute to such remarkable longevity include genetics, a balanced diet, regular exercise, and a positive mental outlook. Supercentenarians like María Branyas Morera offer valuable insights into the secrets of living a long and healthy life.
The Oldest Person Alive Throughout History
The title of the oldest person alive has changed hands many times over the years. Jeanne Calment from France, who lived to be 122 years old, holds the record for the longest confirmed human lifespan. Like María, many of these individuals have shared common traits, including a relatively stress-free life and strong social connections.
Conclusion
It’s incredible to think about who is the oldest person alive and how they’ve witnessed history unfold over more than a century. María Branyas Morera is not just a testament to longevity, but also to the power of resilience and maintaining a positive attitude throughout life. We can all learn something from these remarkable individuals who have lived through so much and continue to inspire us with their stories. Read More

Maria Branyas, world’s oldest person, dies at 117
Maria Branyas, the world’s oldest person, died on Monday at the age of 117, Spanish media reported.
Branyas was born on March 4,1907 in San Francisco and moved to Spain as a young child in 1915. According to Spanish media, she held the title of the world’s oldest person from 17 January 2023, after French super elderly person Lucille Randon passed away at the age of 118.
A super elderly person is defined as someone who is 110 years old or older.
The Gerontology Research Group (GRG), which monitors the Guinness Book of World Records‘ list of oldest people, has confirmed that Branyas’ age and status are scientifically valid. According to GRG, in July, she became the 8th longest-living person in history.
There have been many historic events in Branyas’ life, including her surviving the COVID-19 pandemic. At the age of 113, she contracted and recovered from the virus in April 2020, becoming the oldest known survivor of the disease at that time.
The woman attributed her longevity to “order, peace of mind, good relationships with family and friends, contact with nature, emotional stability, no worries, no regrets, lots of positivity and avoiding toxic people.”
Prior to the global recognition, Branyas was recognised as the oldest resident of Spain as of 22 December 2019. The GRG and Guinness World Records are expected to

Maria was born on 4 March 1907 in San Francisco, USA, but returned to Spain with her family when she was eight to settle in Catalonia.
She's lived in the region ever since and has resided in the same nursing home for the past 23 years.
She became the oldest person on Earth in January 2023, following the death of 118-year-old Lucile Randon (France).
"She is very grateful for all the congratulations received and the interest that so many people have shown in her state of health," said Eva Carrera Boix, the director of Maria's nursing home.
"She is happy to be able to celebrate this special day intimately with her family and colleagues and wishes everyone a happy Monday."
Beyond being hard of hearing and having mobility issues, Maria has no physical or mental health problems.
In fact, she's in such good condition that she has agreed to undergo scientific testing by researchers who hope to gain further insight into the secrets to long life.

Scientist Manel Esteller, who has conversed with Maria at length, told Spanish outlet ABC:
“She has a completely lucid head. She remembers with impressive clarity events from when she was only four years old, and she does not present any cardiovascular disease, common in elderly people.
It is clear that there is a genetic component because there are several members of her family who are over 90 years old.”
Samples of Maria’s saliva, blood and urine have been taken and will be compared with those of her 80-year-old daughter.
The researchers hope that assessing Maria’s genes will aid the development of drugs which could combat diseases associated with ageing.
Befitting her status as the world’s oldest person in the digital age, Maria is active on X (formerly known as Twitter) with assistance from her daughter.
Her bio states: “I'm old, very old, but not an idiot.”
In addition to “luck and good genetics,” Maria attributes her longevity to “order, tranquility, good connection with family and friends, contact with nature, emotional stability, no worries, no regrets, lots of positivity, and staying away from toxic people.”
Due to her poor hearing, Maria's family use a voice-to-text device to communicate with her.
She became permanently deaf in one ear when she was a child, after falling while playing with her brothers during the voyage from America to Spain in 1915.
This wasn’t the only misfortune the family suffered aboard the ship – Maria’s father sadly died due to pulmonary tuberculosis towards the end of the journey.
Maria lived through the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 as well as the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), which she said she has “very bad memories” of.

She got married in 1931 to a Catalan doctor named Joan Moret, with whom she had three children.
Her husband passed away in 1976; she has also outlived her only son, August, who died in a tractor accident at the age of 86.
Over a century after the 1918 pandemic, Maria also survived COVID-19.
She contracted the virus a few weeks after turning 113 in 2020 but made a full recovery within days, becoming the world’s oldest COVID-19 survivor.
The title was taken later in the year by Lucile Randon, who was three years older than Maria.
Despite admitting that she’s “getting closer and closer to death” in a post on X last month, Maria maintains a positive outlook on life and believes that there is always something new to learn every day, even at her grand old age.
She is now the 12th oldest verified person in history and should she reach her 118th birthday, she’ll climb up to 5th place.
The oldest person ever authenticated was Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who lived to the age of 122 years 164 days.
