Ang Kape ng Cozy Cove, Baguio

Ano ang kadalasan mong ginagawa pagkatapos ng isang pagsusulit? Ikaw ba'y namamahinga sa bahay? Naglilibot kasama ang mga kaibigan? Kung ako naman, ako'y nahihilig mamahinga ngunit sa mahalagang mga pagsusulit, karaniwan kong ginugusto lumuwas sa iba't ibang panig Pinas, malapit man o malayo, para maihiwalay muna ang buhay-aral sa buhay-saya. Noong ika-13 ng Mayo, 2023, kami'y naglakbay paakyat ng Baguio ngunit iba ang dahilan ng aming pagpunta kumpara sa mga karaniwang mga turista.

Ang Baguio ay kadalasan sikat sa iba't ibang panig ng mundo dahil sa kultura, pagkain, at mga destinasyon dito pero may isa pang panig ang ikinasikat nito, ang larangan ng musika. Sa kasalukuyang panahon, ay isang bagong "tourist hotspot" na sumikat dahil sa larangan ng musika. Ito ay ang ang Cozy Cove, pero bakit nga sumikat ang lugar na ito? Maraming mga artistang tumutugtog dito, kung sa makabagong banda tulad ng Cup of Joe at Dilaw, atsa mga lumang banda tulad ni Mayonaise at si TJ Monterde. Ngunit tayo muna’y magbalik sa mismong oras ng pagdating.

Dumating ang pamilya ko sa Baguio noong bandang pa-tanghalian pa lamang. Kami’y umakyat noong umaga ngunit hindi namin dinaan ang sikat na tourist spots habang kami’y paakyat para mahabol sana ang maangang “check-in” time ng hotel. Pagdating namin sa mismong Baguio, kami’y hinabol gutom dahil hindi pa kami kumain ng almusal kung kaya’t kami’y dumiretso sa isa sa mga pinakakilalang kainan sa gitna ng Baguio, ang “Canto.” Medyo humigit ng mga tatlumput minuto bago dumating ang aming pagkain ngunit hindi namin inasahan na ganoon ka ganda ang mismong pagkain rito.

Sa mabilisang salita, napagkasarap pero masakit sa bulsa ang mga presyo rito. Kung kaya't unahin ninyo rito kung pupunta man kayo. Ang mga litrato sa ilalim kinuha namin at bawat isa sa kanila ay napagkasarap pero ang pinakapaborito ko rito ang croquettes dahil ngunit mainit ay nagpakasarap ng bawat kagat sa bola-bolang patatas.

Pagkatapos namin kumain namin ay kami'y dumiresto naman sa aming estasyong hotel ngunit hindi pa bukas ang mismong check-in kaya kami muna ay nagpark ng aming sasakyan sa ilalim ng hotel at naglakad papunta sa SM City Baguio. Ang SM City Baguio ay hindi katulad ng mga ibang SM dito sa Pinas dahil sa bukas hanging na porsyento nito. Sa madaling salita, walang air-con pero hindi ganoon kainit maliban kung tatapat ka sa mismong sikat ng araw. Pero kung tutuusin man, medyo may sariling ganda rin ang arkitektura ng SM kumpara sa mga ibang building parang “Cruise Ship design nito” pero balik tayo sa kwento ng aming araw. Hindi gaanong kawili-wili ang mga nangyari kaya tayo ay lumipat sa pagbalik namin sa hotel.

Ang hotel nga pala naming pinili ay yung mas bagong Hotel Veniz sa Session Road, hindi yung luma sa Burnham. Medyo tipikal rin naman ang nilalaman ng kwarto, matinong pagkain, at malinis naman ang bawat sulok pero ayun ang normal sa hotel. Matapos kami pumasok, nagpahinga muna lamang kami hanggang sa oras noong mismong tugtugan.

Dumating kami sa Cozy Cove ng mga bandang mga alas-singko pagabi, naabutan namin noon ang iba sa mga artista at bandang itinatampok. Sina Raphy at CJ mula sa Cup of Joe, si Arthur Miguel, at si Janine Tenoso. Kumuha muna kami ng pagkain sa mismong lugar dahil Cafe sila, dalawang inumin, at tatlong burger (na hindi ko na maalala ang pangalan). Medyo masarap naman ang pagkain pero ang tunay na dahilan kung bakit kami pumunta rito ay ang para mismong tutugan. Kung kaya’t ang tatay nilapitan ang isa sa mga kasama nila sa mesa at nanghingi ng retrato kasama sila.

At sa wakas, nagsimula ang gabi. Madaming video sa YouTube ngayon ang nakuha sa gabi na iyon pero naman sa aking pananaw, sang-ayon sa setlist ng mga banda nila. Pinangunahan ang gabi noon ni Janine Tenoso at tinugtog niya ang kanyang mga orihinal na kanta, pati na rin ang mga sikat na makalumang OPM tulad ng Di Na Muli ng Itchyworms. Sumunod sa kanya ay si Arthur Miguel kung saan siya rin ay tumugtog ng ilan sa mga sikat niyang cover ng iba’t ibang sikat na kanta, pati na rin ang mga bago niyang sikat na orihinal tulad Dito sa Ilalim ng Buwan. Matapos ang mga solong artista ay umakyat na ang unang banda na sina Calein. Di katulad ng dalawa, hindi gaanong nahatak ang mga manonood sa kanilang tutugan ngunit pagdating biglaang nahaktak pabalik ang atensyon noong itinugtog nila ang kanilang orihinal na kanta “Umaasa.” At para sa pinakahuli, ang hinihintay ng lahat na sina Cup of Joe kung saan bawat kanta, bawat sigaw, bawat galaw, ay nagbigay-buhay sa bawat manonood. Masigasig at masaya nagtapos ang gabing iyon, busog sa pawis, pagod, at saya. Masarap mapanood, lalong-lalo sa personal, ang mga artistang iniidolo mo. Nakakabuhay ng isip, galaw, at pagmamahal sa bawat larangan na hinihilig mo.

“They look like a movie, don’t they?”

He whistles, settling beside you with his usual sly look. His hands were in his pocket, uncaring of everything as usual but his looks were as sharp as ever.

You only shrug, looking at the couple slow dancing in the middle of the room and catching everyone’s eye. It was supposed to be a school dance but it felt as if everyone here were just extras and those two were the main characters of a cliche story, staring at each other’s eyes as if nothing else mattered. Like some kind of romance movie that everyone digs.

You sat there because you can’t dance for shit and he sat there because he doesn’t give a shit.

“Wanna be in a so-called movie state like them, then?” You tease but Kokonoi only snorts, looking at you.

“The person that I would want to be in a movie with doesn’t know how to dance.”

The lights shine on him so perfectly, hair swept to the side, and you fear that the heat on your face or the way your heart beats is too obvious. He doesn’t look away and you admit defeat by leaning back on your seat, clearing your throat.

“Do you want to be a movie like them as well, then?” He shifts, one of his arms over the back of the chair and his leg over his other. He was completely facing you now, cheek on the hand propped up on the plastic chair.

You hum, not needing to think about your answer. “Nah… The best love stories… aren’t made to be movies. They were between two people who genuinely wanted each other without a care if people were watching the story unfold or not.”

You glance at the couple. They were beautiful but they weren’t perfect. And that was okay. Movies, on the other hand, made things seem easier than it was. Flawless. You didn’t want a movie.

“I don’t need a movie. I want a realistic love story where we don’t have to pretend to be perfect and where we’ll have our ups and downs but still find each other in the end because of the amount of love we continue to have for each other and our refusal to give up on each other.”

Your gaze finds him once more.

Kokonoi had never once looked away from you.

He smiles, a genuine one this time and your heart is ready to give up and burn from the way he makes you feel.

“This is exactly why I fell in love with you.”
