Back to Black (15): Winehouse Biopic Illustrates Her Unique Talent & Tragic Decline.
#onemannsmovies #filmreview of "Back to Black". #BackToBlackFilm. The Winehouse biopic is a good watch but fails to thrill. 3.5/5.
A One Mann’s Movies Film Review of “Back to Black” (2024). You’d need to be a bit out of it, particularly if you are from the UK, not to realise that “Back to Black” is a biopic of the legendary but tragic singer Amy Winehouse who died in 2011. The film is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, who burst onto the movie scene with a wonderful film about another music legend (John Lennon in 2009’s…

CDP at the Make-Out Room, San Francisco
Today we look back at the May 1 performance by Census Designated Place (CDP) at the Make-Out Room in San Francisco, as part of the monthly Monday Make-Out series.
We were all very excited to play this show. And then things started going awry. First, our synth player Tom Djll was ill an unable to make the gig. And when we were about to go on, I found myself with cable faults and other technical issues. I had actually anticipated many things and had several redundancies, but also a few blind spots, particularly around 1/4” cables. That will not happen again. And after the anxiety of those mishaps in front of a packed room, we played on, and it turned out to be a great show. We played very well, indeed the heads of the various tunes came out as well as I have heard them, and the energy throughout was great. We even had folks dancing in the audience.
You can see a bit of our set in this clip, featuring our newest tune Marlon Brando.
vimeo
CDP Marlon Brando May 1 from CatSynth on Vimeo.
We were preceded by two other bands. First was a project from our friend Lucio Menegon from New York, together with Janie Cowan on upright bass and John Hanes on drums.
Lucio’s guitar performance had a very narrative, almost storytelling quality. This was set against a mixture of idiomatic rhythms and percussive stops from Cowan and Hanes.
They were followed by a quartet featuring Anton Hatwich from Chicago together with Ben Goldberg on clarinet, Josh Smith on saxophone and Hamir Atwal on drums.
During this time, the crowd at the Make-Out room continued to grow, and by the time we were setting up it was as crowded as I have seen there since I played there with Surplus 1980 some four years earlier. Which made the technical difficulties all the more stressful. But as stated earlier, the show ultimately went well as a trio with myself, Mark Pino on drums and Joshua Marshall on saxophones. The music was very well received by the audience and the other musicians.
Thanks to Karl Evangelista for organizing the series, Rent Romus for helping with logistics on that night, and all the folks at the Make-Out Room. Overall, it was a good show, and some important lessons learned on technical blind spots. We will get back to composing, rehearsing and preparing for next ones.

Kim Jonghyun: an ordinary case of suicide inside kpop industry?
I really think that I shouldn’t be writing this here and I really hope and wish to not disrespect any Sh*ne fans/Jo**h*un fans in this delicated moment. I really wish I couldn’t have to make a post like this, but it’s weird how many twisted coincidences are surrounding  Jo**h*un’s case. That’s why I’m gonna put a “read more” on the rest of it  (will also have involves trigger warnings such as suicide, depression and death). Again, I don’t want to disrespect any of the people who loved  Jo**h*un and, if you don’t feel well with all those posts, distance yourself of social media. Don’t give up of your own life whatsoever and be strong always.
Okay, so after I saw the news, I really thought how everything about the suicide was too “sudden” and “unexpected”.  Jo**h*un performed a week ago, he had a comeback coming, TV appearances... Everything was going well for him - at least on the outside. Although we as fans don’t know even half of the idols true lives and what they go through, some weird elements caught me after researching for some news about him written before today. And one caught my attention:
Tumblr media
????
So many things are wrong with this, that I don’t even know how to start. First, why the hell would a stylish (probably hired by we know who) gave him a jacket like that for him to use? And even if he didn’t understand English, just why? There are so many other jackets with easy reading english sentences to be read and understood, why something like this?
Also, it’s important to point out that Kurt Cobain is a part of 27 Club, along with Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Amy Winehouse and so many famous artists. You can even see the list here. And Jo**h*un was 27 years old in the Ocidental age (his name is already featuring the list on Wikipedia wtf).
There's had been always a mystery around this "club", related with this coincidence and there has been articles mentioning the correlation with these suicides with occult rituals . But why would someone waste their time making a ritual using a sucessful artist; a ritual that the public won't see? This article explains:
“The issue of controlling humanity with esoteric words and symbols encoded within a play, a media spectacular or a ritual is one of the most difficult for people to comprehend. That is why most people are viewed with utter contempt as “cowans”, “the profane”, “the gentiles” and “the goyim” by secret society initiates”
If you read the article I just mentioned (they also explain better about the rituals, so if you want to understand this part go read it), there will be comparisons between Heath Ledger and Brittany Murphy, that, although they weren't 27, they participated in some photoshoots that were kind of weird. I won't show them here because it's not the purpose of this post, but Lonely's MV maybe can give us a hint of how things are, somehow fucked up.
The story is about the main charachter, Jo**h*un, lonely inside a big house. Of course you can understand that his lover left him and all he's being going through is because of that. But, it can also receive a different and darker meaning.
Tumblr media
At the beginning you can see him doing simple things as eating, brushing his teeth or at the sofa. But he looks away from this world, like his character isn't even there or questioning his own existence.
Tumblr media
And then, one day, he risk a line on his wrist. That, of course, can simply being interpretated by someone counting days that the lost lover was gone. But it could be also seen as an act of someone who is desperate, seeking for help, because he feels so empty and aching in pain, not because of a simple lover, but because of his own existence, that he has no choice other than “cut himself” with a dark pen.
Tumblr media
And it's certainly something that goes around him in everything he does during the MV. He eats, but suddenly we see more marks. He does another one on a bathtub, another when he's playing guitar. Is it just all the times he remembers his lover? Is it because writting on his whole arm is more stylish than doing it on a wall or rock?
Tumblr media
This scene (it was the pic of the Kurt Cobain post I mentioned above), close to the ending, disturbed me the most. He has a lot of marks on his wrist and he looks dejected. The sun light goes throught the bathroom while the water is turned on and he sings. During the other scenes the feeling we have is that he gave up the things he liked on the MV, like playing the piano. He's just standing there, doing nothing.
Tumblr media
And then, he looks at the camera for one last time before he "drowns" at the bathtub and, suddenly, he's looking at the sea on a beach (??).
Tumblr media
Even if this MV isn't related with his personal life and problems, the impression we have it's that it paitns a better and more beautiful version of a depression development  than it actually is. It's not okay to take your own life because of a lover or because everything is too much and after what happened, this MV, at least for me, got even more symbolic.
So, in my opinion, I see what happened as an occultist ritual, something more present inside the industry than many can imagine. But why, someone can ask? Because this world is darker and twisted that people can imagine, including kpop. Kpop has nice concepts, personalities and cute idols, but, behind all of that, there's a lot of training, mental illness and suffering that comes from the own agencies and hardcore fans. Besides, everything we see has a symbolism. Nothing is there randomly, just because it's cool. There are posts analysing kpop mvs and showing how they're not innocent at all and they're there to pass a message, a lifestyle. We are spectators, that can incorporate those messages into our lives. So, music industry it's not just there by the music, but for all the meaning behind it. And, those kinds of actions (sacrifices made by the industry) are more common than we think. Remember Ladie's Code and how weird the circunstamces of the deaths of EunB and Rise were.
I'm not saying or stating that Jo**h*un hadn't problems whatsoever. Suicide is a serious matter and we need to find a way to treasure our lives the most. But, there are symbolisms around him (and the own group) that can't be ignored and may had influenced the act to portrait something “else”.
BONUS 1: Articles talking analysing RV, Shinee, BEG and Ladies Code MVs related with occultism and MKU subjects.
BONUS 2: Since I mentioned Ladies' Code, I'm gonna talk a little bit about this coincidence I found on "Kiss Kiss" MV and "Married to the Music" one.
On this analysis about the possible correlation between the accident and this MV, it's shown that, coincidentially, EunB kissed by the death, actually died on the accident.
Tumblr media
Something curious that I noticed after watching MTTM is that the same happens with only one member: Jo**h*un.
In that MV, the "music" is portraited by a woman dressed in black and, since the time the Shinee members decide to embrace her, they lose some parts of their bodies.
In a particular scene, Jo**h*un is pushed against his own will by the woman in black and kissed hard (so hard he lost his lips and she put it on a cake).
Tumblr media
Again, this post wasn't made with the intention to hurt anyone. Still wish the deepest condolences to the family and fans. But it's an occasion to also reflect about the way music industry works and if it's worth to be unaware of how it works backstage.

Shmaltz Brewing with release of SHE'BREW Beer® Double IPA, to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage
Press Release
Clifton Park, NY -- Monday, February 27, 2017 -- Shmaltz Brewing Company ramps up for a new special release, a completely new Double IPA recipe for SHE'BREW Beer® in celebration of International Women's Collaboration Brew Day (IWCBD; March 8, 2017). As Shmaltz turns 21 this year -- the historical age at which citizens were granted the right to vote before it changed to 18 (circ. 1946) -- the Upstate New York brewery commemorates the 100th Anniversary for women's suffrage in New York State with the brewing of SHE'BREW Beer®. In the coming weeks, the sisters of Shmaltz will come from far and wide to brew a juicy, complex Double IPA with Head Brewer Richie Saunders, brewing supervisor Chris "Duffy" Dufrain, and brewer Annalise Ellis. In April 2017, SHE'BREW Beer® will nationally roll out in 4-packs and draft to the 35 states within Shmaltz's distribution network. It was just 100 years ago when women garnered the right to vote in Shmaltz's home state of New York. In a political climate like today, where pink pussyhats are a common accessory for the modern woman, we must not forget that strong female voices weren't always accepted. In 1917, women of all New York counties marched, picketed, and protested to have their voices heard. These ladies had chutzpah! Women such as Alice Paul, leader of the National Woman's Party, and Carrie Lane Chapman Catt, president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, picketed the White House and went door to door for over a year collecting signatures of women who demanded the right to vote. Having the right to vote, women's health, and all human rights is as American as apple pie. To go along with this theme, Shmaltz invited Patti Wilcox and Deb Underwood from Awestruck Cider in Sydney, NY to help with the project. Awestruck will be making a companion cider utilizing some of the same hops that will be in the beer. Shmaltz will donate a portion of proceeds from SHE'BREW Beer® sales to Planned Parenthood and the Pink Boots Society scholarship fund, a global non-profit that aims to advance women in the beer business. The official photoshoot for the new SHE'BREW Beer® label commenced, appropriately, the day after President's Day at Shmaltz Brewing on Tuesday, February 21. The Shmaltz staff was joined by multiple women from Planned Parenthood Mohawk Hudson, including Director of Communications Emma Corbett and Public Affairs Director Beth LeGere, Jacki Hannon and Laura Burghdurg from Eagle Beverage, Stephanie Martini from Mohawk Taproom, Heidi Knoblauch from The Plumb Bar, Brooke Taney from Slidin' Dirty, Janis Benincasa from SUNY New Paltz Benjamin Center, Stacy Manna from Saratoga Eagle, Patti Wilcox from Awestruck Cider, and Rachel Mabb from The Ruck in Troy. Label artwork and additional details regarding SHE'BREW Beer® will soon be released. About Shmaltz Brewing Company Founder and owner Jeremy Cowan established Shmaltz Brewing in San Francisco in 1996. The first 100 cases of He'brew Beer® were hand-bottled and delivered throughout the Bay Area from the back of his Grandmother's Volvo. Shmaltz Brewing now sells He’brew Beer across 35 states, through 40 wholesalers and in nearly 5,000 retailers. After 17 years of being an outspoken cheerleader for contract brewing, Cowan and staff opened their own New York State production brewery in 2013 in Clifton Park, 10 minutes north of Albany. Shmaltz's home boasts a 50-barrel brewhouse with 30,000 barrels of annual capacity and packages a diverse and tasty variety of core and seasonal favorites in 12 and 22-ounce bottles and kegs. The Shmaltz Tasting Room is open five days a week (Wed-Sun) and offers tours, barrel-aged previews, beer-to-go, and special releases. RateBeer.com ranked Shmaltz as one of the "Top 100 Brewers in the World" in 2013, and the brewery brought home 10 gold and 6 silver medals from the World Beer Championships in the past several years.

Six Album Covers by Famous Comic Book Artists
Tumblr media
On Tuesday, Universal Music Enterprises announced a new deal with Marvel Entertainment that would bring back their Hip-Hop Variant program. The program puts Marvel characters into famous hip-hop album covers for special edition reissues. LL Cool J’s ‘Mama Said Knock You Out’ featuring artwork from Tim Bradstreet’s ‘Punisher #1,’ 50 Cent’s ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’ featuring artwork from Brian Stelfreeze’s ‘Invincible Iron Man #1’ and GZA’s ‘Liquid Swords’ featuring artwork from Denys Cowan’s ‘Contest of Champions #1’ are the first three albums to be getting the comic book treatment. Each album will be available as a double color vinyl Variant Collector’s Edition and a deluxe edition that also includes the original comic book and a 3D lenticular print of the cover limited to 3,000 copies each.
Comic book art has had a place on album covers for decades. And it hasn’t been for just hip-hop albums either. Hip-hop and rock artists have booth seen fit to go for a more animated style when it came to packaging their creative visions. And some of them have even commissioned work from some of the most important comic artists in the field.
Vinyl Bay 777, Long Island’s music outlet, is taking a look at some music’s most iconic album covers drawn by some of comics’ most iconic artists. Here are six covers with some serious talent behind them.
1.       Big Brother and the Holding Company, ‘Cheap Thrills’: Big Brother and the Holding Company’s ‘Cheap Thrills’ has one of the most recognizable album covers of the 1960s. It was drawn by underground artist and noted music lover R. Crumb (known best for his controversial character Fritz the Cat) at Janis Joplin’s request. In an interview with the album’s art director John Berg, it was said that Crumb did not want to be paid for the work because he didn’t want “Columbia’s filthy lucre.”
2.       GZA, “Liquid Swords”: For his second solo album, Wu-Tang’s GZA enlisted the drawing prowess of fellow New Yorker Denys Cowan for its cover art and videos. By the time of the album’s release in 1995, Cowan had already made a name for himself in both comics and music, having drawn for both DC and Marvel, as well as collaborating on the one-time Prince comic book in 1991. As stated above, Cowan will be revisiting this album cover for the new Marvel / Universal deal.
3.       Gorillaz: Besides being the pet project of Blur’s Damon Albarn, the other collaborator on cartoon band Gorillaz is artist Jamie Hewlett. Outside of the band, Hewlett is best known for his irreverent comic series ‘Tank Girl,’ about a female bounty hunter who becomes an outlaw.
4.       Joe Satriani, ‘Surfing With The Alien’: The only one of these albums to feature an actual superhero on the cover, Joe Satriani decided to put a drawing of Marvel’s Silver Surfer on the cover of his iconic second album, ‘Surfing With The Alien.’ The character was originally created by the legendary Jack Kirby, though the picture on the cover was taken from 1982’s Silver Surfer #1, drawn by John Byrne. Byrne has been a prolific creator in his own right, having drawn many of Marvel’s most beloved characters, including the X-Men and Fantastic Four.
5.       Iggy Pop, ‘Brick by Brick’: For the cover of Iggy Pop’s 1990 album ‘Brick by Brick,’ Virgin Records decided to reach out to artist Charles Burns. Burns had been known by then for his more macabre comics, based somewhere between horror and sci-fi, having been published in Art Spiegelman’s ‘Raw’ magazine and Sub Pop’s fanzine, as well as commissioned work for the likes of Time and the Village Voice and his own series of graphic novels.
6.       Korn, ‘Follow the Leader’: When Korn released their 1998 album, ‘Follow the Leader,’ the artwork for the album became very associated with the band at the time. Not only was it the album cover, but it also ended up becoming the story in both breakout album single “Freak on a Leash” and the first single from their next album “Falling Away from Me.” The work was created by Greg Capullo, who was a comic artist with Marvel in the 1990s and has recently worked with DC drawing Batman.
It is not unusual for musicians to use comic book art for their album covers. Musicians in both rock and hip-hop have done so, some collaborating with some pretty prolific artists. Marvel and Universal’s upcoming Hip-Hop Variant reboot will be attempting to make the connection even more clear by taking iconic covers and reimagining them with iconic characters drawn by Marvel’s best artists. The result is sure to be something special.
                                                            ---

A Dallas native and righteous contender in the tough Texas Tenor tradition (whose flute playing makes good argument for a tough Texas flute player poll), Alex Coke's multifarious projects have included studies of Leadbelly and prison work songs, musical meditations on war and peace, an award winning popular post bop band, the Worthy Constituents, as well as a frequent featured soloist with Klezmer, Cuban, Indian and African musicians and a touring and recording member of both Texas' Creative Opportunity Orchestra and Holland's Willem Breuker Kollektief. The Mood Illusion is a group of musicians that put lounge music through the blender of open improvisation and medieval composition. The core group features Bob Hoffnar on pedal steel guitar, Stephen Bidwell on drums, Mike St Clair on trombone and Janie Cowan on bass. The lineup for this special evening at Austin's Carousel Lounge includes: Alex Coke woodwinds/samples Bob Hoffnar Steel guitar Stephen Bidwell Drums Elaine Barber Harp Ingebrigt Håker Flaten Bass Janie Cowan Bass Michael St Clair Trombone There is a $10 requested donation for the evening. This project is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department. via Blogger http://ift.tt/2lwixns
