Introducing: Jananic language!

(Warning: long post! Keep in mind English is not my first language. I apologize for any grammar mistakes)

Jananic or Janaji (pronounced "dyanadyi") is the dominant language spoken in a fictional piece of land in Southeast Asia called the Hook-Eye Territory.

It's the official language in these 5 small countries (which I will address later on another post).

I inspired myself in a abugida writing system, also present in other languages such as Thai and Hindi. Here are the very basics about each sound and symbol.

Explaining it simply, in this kind of systems, vowels come attached to consonants in syllables (with some exceptions), instead of being written by its side, like you would do while using an alphabet.

Basics

Janaji has 6 vowels (15 if counting the pitch variations) and 16 consonants, only 3 of them being terminal consonants. A total of 31 separate sounds.

Syllables are usually formed as (CV), but can be (CVV), (CCV) or even (CCVV) if the consonant and/or vowel in it is duplicated. In JJ, different consonants or vowels can not share the same syllable. The only exceptions are:

• When the base sound is also a vowel and not a consonant (VV type of syllable)

• When the terminal consonants N and G are paired together at the end of a syllable

Let me show a few examples:

Writing directions

The writing direction can vary depending on the level of formality and context. On the present day, people will write horizontally, right to left or left to right. However, traditionally and in formal contexts, it's written vertically. If it's from bottom to top or top to bottom, it depends on the hierarchy between the people writing (if any).

• If you are speaking to your subordinate or someone who's either younger or less experienced than you, you write from top to bottom ↓. This makes you the dominant voice. (ex: a boss giving instructions to a worker)

• If you are speaking to an authority figure or just someone who's older or more experienced than you, you write from bottom to top ↑. This is a way of sounding more humble. (ex: a regular person sending a letter to a priestess)

People usually will not write vertically to talk to people they are very close to. However, vertical writing can also be used in posters, outdoors and ads, and especially art and poetry.

But worry not! For convenience reasons and better understanding, I'll write left to right when explaining stuff in my posts.

Okay so I recently downloaded the sims and have been making all my favourite characters and families with my own headcannons. And I just recently found out about Talia and Bruce's other kids (Athanasi, Janan, Taj and Saif) and now I know who I'll be making next.

What started as a simple question of ‘How many children has Bruce Wayne had over the years?’ has turned into approximately 56 sticky notes on my wall in a vague timeline for an AU where they all exist…

So far I’ve only done the birthdays of the kids/some grandkids, bio parent deaths, and who moved in when, as well as Jason’s revival and the first overnight stay of two bio-kids who’s mothers have shared custody. I still at the very least need to do adoption dates, significant relationship dates, significant hero-related events, canon events, canon events, and other such details.

Action Comics # 1059, 1060, 2023 Annual.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson just ended his run on Action Comics, with a story called New World. The big baddy, Janan Al Ghul from Earth Al Ghul (daughter of Bruce and Talia on that world), tried to take over the main universe Earth but was (luckily 😉) defeated. She had intended to take Superman’s new adopted daughter, Otho-Ra, as a new vessel (like how Ra's has been written as wanting to use Damian).

So far, I haven't read the story when she was introduced, back in 2022. But I've heard PKJ’s whole run is worth reading.

I'm not sure how I would breach the subject to Batman that his elseworld daughter Janan tried to conquer the world if I were Superman. But I sure would do it, somehow. Maybe point it out at some time when he was extra Extra…

On a side note, Action Comics has been an anthology book focusing on the Superman family for a while. (I believe it's ended now.) Even though I didn't like all the stories, I enjoyed several. I don't know why DC reinvents the wheel and creates new (short lived) bat/Gotham-anthology books for Batman-characters, instead of making Detective Comics the anthology it used to be.

the crack of splintering wood hit the air like a thunderclap, & beneath it, nabooru sounded like a wounded animal, grunting hard as the shockwave traveled up her arm, & into her shoulder. a few stray splinters drove themselves through the pale linen wraps criss - crossed across her forearms, finding purchase in the skin below, blood welling in small spots, but for a moment, she held her position, fresh sweat beading on her forehead all the while. she lasted only as long as it took for janan to lift her weapon ; without the pressure it provided holding it together, the shield fell to pieces, & so, too, did she.

❛ stop, stop, stop, ❜ she gasped, axe raised across her face to block any incoming blows, until she was certain the other had taken heed of her words, & given her the space to catch her breath. each day they fought a little harder, trained a little longer, but janan, still, was the stronger of the two, & though she wished to press on, to slash wildly at her mentor & hope for a blow to land, she had absolutely nothing left to give. the edge of the coliseum was dotted with benches, but she found the thought of making her way to one agonizing ; instead, she collapsed on the spot, legs buckling, & for a moment, she felt that she would retch.

❛ you win, ❜ she wheezed, half – lying, half – falling onto her back, too tired to push aside the slivers & shards of polished wood, accepting her fate as they pressed into her shoulders, her back, her thighs. ❛ again. please … i just need … ❜ but all the air in her lungs was gone, & the sentence hung, abandoned, in the air.

true recovery was a long way off, but lungs filled with air bolstered her, if only for a moment. after a few minutes of heavy breathing, she gazed up, eyes flicking to janan’s face, & grinned, even as all her muscles screamed. ❛ cheater, ❜ she managed, in a hoarse sing – song. ❛ couldn’t let me have it just this one time ? ❜

     Amidst the brightly lit lanterns and merrymaking of a celebration that isn't quite his to partake — and yet, not quite not his — he finds himself slipping away from it all for just a few breaths. While it has been an enjoyable night, witnessing Sonia and her— their peoples engaged so wondrously in their customs, it has not stopped the twinge in his heart nor the falter in his steps. In the wake of lively song and dance, memories of a long bygone past had risen too easily to touch the surface of his waters: ones he might have ached to revisit were he alone, but.

     "Lady Janan," he greets, head dipping, bearing held carefully still. Not balking — any distraction her company may provide would be welcome, certainly. Of the whole their halves make, however, Sonia has simply always been the better with connecting. With offering words.

     With Janan.

     Not for a lack of want or trying on Rauru's part! Or so he likes to believe. In their queen's absence, he grapples their encounter with— an overstated courtesy. "A pleasant surprise that our paths may cross here." He pauses. Clears some of the stiffness from his throat. "Are you well on this fine evening?"

     ( He wonders how many times this makes it now, that something like awkwardness should define their moments together. )

What DeSantis just doesn’t get.

Politics is about a lot more than policy positions; even many people on our side don’t understand this.

Ron DeSantis thinks that he can just scream “WOKE! WOKE! WOKE!” all the time while signing a lot of hate legislation into law and this will get him the GOP presidential nomination.

Janan Ganesh at The Financial Times (archived) thinks that DeSantis doesn’t quite grasp populism.

Why DeSantis is losing Republicans to Trump

Consider for a moment what Donald Trump gives to his average follower. Membership in a vast nationwide communion of like-minded people. A paternal figure in a confusing world. The frisson of transgression: middle-aged whites don’t often in life get to play the rebel.

Next to all this, what is the marginal benefit of seeing him win an actual election? What, after that, is the marginal benefit of watching his policies come into force? No doubt, Trump fans would rather have these bonus items than not. But he has done them a profound emotional and almost spiritual service before it ever gets to that.

It is not clear that Ron DeSantis understands this about populism. Until he does, he won’t displace Trump as the leader of the movement in the US. The governor of Florida trades on his electability and administrative competence. But if either of these things was paramount for voters in the Republican primaries, the contest would already be over.

DeSantis is logical, poor man. He thinks modern politics is about doing things. The extent to which it is about belonging — about replacing the group identity that people once got from a church or a trade union — is lost on his rationalist ken. In this one sense, he thinks like a liberal. The left is forever trying to “answer” populist concerns by reshoring industrial jobs or devolving power. It is very sweet, this. And yes, perhaps at the start, populism was about tangible grievances. But once people took sides, around 2016, that group membership started to mean more to them. (As in a long-running war whose original cause is lost on the belligerents.) Trump perceives this more clearly than his rivals.

So, a strident rightwinger, from a far humbler background than Trump, is framed as though he were the latest scion of the Bush clan.

Basically, this is how rightwing populists size up the contest.
