one of the most effective parts of david’s episode of the last of us is the slow reveal of the cultists saying that the meat they’re preparing is venison, and then david and james coming back with the deer, after the audience has explicitly been told they’re running very low on other game stored

An analysis of David in the Last of Us:

Episode 8 took the opportunity to flesh out David’s character and the Silver Lake community and this gave us some insight into this villain’s mentality.

We understand that David thinks he is exceptional. He sees himself as a shepherd along his flock, and a father to his community. However, David feels unsatisfied because there is no one left to challenge him; everyone around him has been broken by him.

I think what attracted David to Ellie (besides her young age) was her sheer power. Ellie is a force of nature and David is surprised that he has met his match in a child. After their initial meeting, he is determined to tame and possess her.

And the way that he goes about this is a study in grooming and manipulation. When they met, David could very easily overpower Ellie at any point, but he lets her think she is in control. He plays nice and draws her in, and the viewer can easily see his past as a teacher of young children helps him in this regard.

From this point forward, David does his best to isolate Ellie and reduce the size of her world to just David and Ellie, hoping that she will give in. When trying to seduce her (*gag*) doesn't work, he decides she isn't worth the trouble and tries to kill her.

What happens next is the turning point where David resolves to take Ellie by force. Something I did not understand on first watch was why David said "no one likes to be humiliated" and "you don't know how good I am" during the burning restaurant scene. Upon rewatch, it makes sense. Ellie has revealed her immunity (what makes her so special) and killed James. She not only pulls one over on David once again, but she has already rejected his romantic advances, further damaging his ego.

The final straw is Ellie setting the restaurant ablaze, directly attacking the center of David's leadership without even knowing it. David is pushed beyond anger and makes the decision to r*pe her right there in the burning restaurant, not even caring that he is putting his own life in danger. This just exemplifies that r*pe is about power and control, not love as he claimed. David has indeed fallen for Ellie, but this is love in its most evil form.

Watching episode 8 for the umpteenth time and wondering what was going through Troy's head as he was filming. His facial expressions when they first came across Ellie had so much sadness behind them. Was it Troy as Joel or Troy as James, knowing who David is, offering that much sorrow. Also, the slight up tick of his lip when he turned to see Ellie trying to be all brave and intimidating. My good sir, your Joel is showing.

Don't get me wrong, I love all the representation of young queer teens, but I wish we had more representation of older queer men. Not love stories between kids with baby faces and stylish clothes and youthful features, love stories born between weathered eyes and crows feat and thinning hair. Men with gravelly voices and worn plaid shirts and stubble. I want to see older, established, gray-haired, and conventionally unattractive men live out their golden years together. The AIDS epidemic robbed us of seeing our futures and our pasts in our queer elders, and they deserve more. I want to see queer love between men and not just boys, proving to everyone that you can live and die as a free man

if i see one more person in the comments of a tiktok or post saying “ooooo david got off lucky!!!! you see if joel got his hands on him it would’ve been so much worse!!!!” wrong. you are already getting the wrong idea from the whole story. ellie can save herself physically. emotionally? no, she needs joel for that part. the show is literally highlighting that in every other aspect, he fails her. and how could he have possibly done worse? SHE SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO SMASH A MEAT CLEAVER INTO A PEDO’S SKULL 22 TIMES AT THE AGE OF 14. even joel can see it so why as a viewer can’t you?

i’m so glad craig and neil didn’t cut down ellie murdering david by joel entering the scene (like in the game) and changed it to her being allowed to take it as far as she wanted because it gives her so much autonomy. she did that shit on her own, and she’ll never be the same.
