it's just. what if you were at least eight different people and you met someone who's like twelve people--or three--at the very least more than one--and at first only one of your persons loves only one of theirs but you can't really pick apart the web of everything you both are and it's easy as anything to feel a one-personed feeling as eight and suddenly, or not suddenly, you're altogether-as-one-thing loving another altogether-as-one-thing, two crowds drawn to each other, two many-selves in love with each other, two untangled bundles retangling and weaving about--but you're also both tangled in the rules of engagement which say to never reuse yarn in a new scarf and that you're not allowed to be crowds-in-love because it "reduces", and then you're left alone, eight-personed, untangled, and reduced.

“You did this on purpose…” Lenara’s complaint is soft and Jadzia laughs into the silence that follows. “I wish…. No, we just haven’t been able to find space…. Do you really hate being roommates with me that much?” She rolls onto her side to look at Lenara, her sigh soft at the worry flickering in Lenara’s eyes. “Nobody needs to know, for all they know I replicated a cot for myself and let you have the bed…” It's tricky, she knows that, but this, this second meeting is so accidental that Jadzia had risked it and taken the chance to make sure Lenara was stuck as her roommate, now she wondered if maybe she made a mistake. “Would you?” “If you really wanted…” Lenara cuts her off with a kiss before she can continue. “All I needed to know.”

i absolutely love this detail! i didn't even notice it and i've rewatched the episode too many times to count. i think you're so right how this betrays the specific distance between them that leads to their permanent separation. lenara has a distinct loyalty to the symbionts in both of them--and what the symbionts represent to their larger culture/history, even the way the symbionts affect who they are ("not all of us have a curzon in us")--and jadzia has a loyalty to the person, the people that both lenara and jadzia are, with the symbionts still but not in those strict terms.

i've been thinking about how small of a change to the story is needed to make the ending happy, wondering what is the tragic-ending catalyst (not so much the overarching tragedy which is like, bigotry, but the thing that causes lenara, on a micro-individual level, to decide to leave). i feel like there's an argument that they were always going to be forced apart, that lenara was always going to choose her planet and established life over jadzia, but the idea that lenara was vacillating the whole episode, that it really was up in the air whether she would stay or go, is interesting. like, would she have abandoned jadzia forever if jadzia had said to her: "say my name" and lenara did.

the story itself already seemed to have some understanding that they were compatible in ways solely attributed to lenara and jadzia alone, without the history, showcased by the entire project that brought lenara to the station in the first place. but neither jadzia nor lenara really say this despite how the show even emphasizes it two seasons later, their science-career connection. like, if lenara had said "jadzia," would her promise of coming back been real--practical--an actual confidence in futurity?

One of the things I understand less about Lenara (or well, about the writing of “Rejoined”) is that she never calls Jadzia by her given name. Lenara only calls her Dax.

Is it because her feelings are inextricably tied to their past?? Is it because calling her Jadzia would be admitting that those same feelings are between these two hosts specifically, between the two women they are now and Lenara isn’t ready to admit that yet??

I lean towards the second explanation tbh but it’s still pretty sad that she can’t bring herself to say it (do I love the Trill #repression Lenara represents? yes I do)

Later Lenara would admit she had never expected to see Jadzia in her official dress uniform, usually the crew of DS9 didn’t use it. Still, as Lenara watches Jadzia with her colleagues, she has to admit she sees the attraction. She is in formal wear, her smile soft when she joins Jadzia, tucking her arm through Jadzia’s as they move closer to Kira Nerys and Keiko O’Brien. Keiko seems to understand her nervousness and smiles warmly. “Well, it’s official… welcome to the wives of Starfleet.” Lenara smiles, squeezing Jadzia’s hand softly even as she replies. “Thank you Keiko…” Nerys smiles over her at Jadzia, then turns to both Keiko and Lenara. “Can I get you anything to drink?” “Stealing my girl already Nerys?” Jadzia’s smile is quick and Lenara laughs, nudging her softly. “Leave her alone…. She’s just being friendly.” It's only later that she acknowledges she knew Nerys had been watching them together, clearly worried even now for Jadzia. She understood why but she would never hurt Jadzia.
