Slush dumped from the clouds, being too cold for rain and too warm for snow. February was almost over, and spring time was almost here! Jade wasn’t one for the winter or cold weather. Maybe it was her upbringing in the Pacific Islands, or maybe it was that thing Rose kept asking her to look into…seasonal affective disorder? Regardless of what it was, Jade was more than ready to start growing plants and spending time in the sun! Despite her dodgy relationship with the winter season, it didn’t stop her from making the long drive from her rural home to the Skaian Aquarium. Despite the length of the drive, podcasts and radio music gave her company as she went.
It was around 9 o’clock when Jade pulled into the aquarium parking lot. It was a Sunday, which meant that she had about two hours before the building was opened up to the public. She would normally have to wait like the rest of the Skaian residence, but she was blessed with being friends with a worker! Jade shivered as she turned off her car, the warm air being quickly overtaken by the cold. She slipped back on her puffy, gray winter jacket, exiting her car. She shivered as she shoved her keys into the pockets on her skirt, which were massive in comparison to the average jean pocket. Zipping up her jacket took no time at all, and she began her way to the aquarium. She jogged as she did so, trying to keep warm as her teeth chattered from the cold. She had made sure that her ID was on the outside of her jacket, so she could scan herself in without having to unzip and release all the warmth she had been storing.
Jade got to the aquarium entrance in no time at all. Normally the doors would just be open, and you could buy tickets to go see all the animals at the reception desk inside. That would not be the case for Jade, since she was coming in early. Before she would have to wait for Dave to let her in, but he pulled through and got her an official pass to allow her to come in basically whenever she wanted. She jolted and shivered as she pulled her hand out of her pocket to scan her ID. Much to her relief, she wouldn’t have to fight it. It worked the first time and the automatic doors opened for her. She entered the aquarium and the smell of salt water assaulted her nose. Dave was not there to greet her as he usually was, but that was alright. Jade knew where she was going. The aquarium was dark, the only lights being from the massive windows. There was the faint humming in the background, any of those with fish would recognize it as a filtering system. The aquarium was massive and they needed to have a massive filtering system to care for all of the creatures that lived inside. It was a surprise that the humming wasn’t louder!
The first stop on Jade’s mental list was the employee backroom. It was on the first floor and relatively hard to find if you didn’t know where to look. It was on the opposite side of the floor that the receptionist desk was at and was near the indoor penguin exhibit. The penguins had an indoor and outdoor exhibit, and if the weather was appropriate and there were enough people working, then the penguins could go outside! The door was around there, and most were too enthralled by the penguins to notice employees walking in and out.
Most of the penguins were awake when she arrived at their enclosure, swimming around and playing with each other. As Jade walked past, a penguin came up to her in the water, looking at her with curious eyes. She smiled and bent down, putting her finger against the cold glass. The penguin put its beak to her finger from the other side, following it as she made little shapes against the glass. Penguins were so cute and so very silly! Jade had never worked with them personally, but she loved watching them play and swim around. She was surprised that the penguin was playing with her, maybe it recognized her somehow?
“Hey Jade.”
Jade jolted upright, which caused the penguin to swim off. She looked to her left and grinned. Standing before her was one of her very good friends! His sunglasses reflected the lights from the penguin exhibit, and his normally side-swept, blonde hair was pulled back into a low man-bun. There was never a time that he didn’t complain about it, but he worked one-on-one with the more exotic creatures at the zoo, and the last thing that he needed was to be yanked into the water and die.
“Dave!” Jade gasped, before pulling him into a tight hug. Dave wheezed and patted her shoulder, an awkward yet friendly gesture. She pulled away and he pushed up his glasses adjusting back to his “cool guy” stature. That was just mostly keeping his hands in his pockets at all times.
“Hanging out with the penguins?”
“Yep! They’re really cute.” Jade said with a chirp, watching Dave as he crouched down to see the penguins as they swam through the water. They appeared to recognize him, doing little spins and splashes in the water.
“Yeah, I guess they’re pretty cute. At least until they start asking for fish. Have you seen what their mouths look like?” Dave stood up and grabbed Jade by her shoulders, “They have fucking nightmare mouths Jade. It’s like looking into one of those metal crusher machines, with a million little spines just waiting to tear up your flesh.”
“Well it’s a good thing I’m not here to feed the penguins! I’m here to see Callie.”
“Callie? What do you…ah. Right right, I know what you’re talking about.” Dave nodded, his hands finding his way back into his pockets. He gestured towards the door with his head, and walked towards it. Jade followed, taking off her fluffy coat as she did so. The two entered the room, and Jade opened Dave’s locker. It was relatively empty, with a sad slumped over backpack being the only thing inside. She shoved her coat into it, and emptied her pockets, not wanting to risk anything getting wet.
Dave waited patiently against the wall next to the door that would lead them to where Jade wanted to go. Once the locker was closed, he opened the door and entered, Jade on his heels.
“How has Callie been?”
“Uhh, she’s been good. We’re working on getting a proper spot set up for her soon.”
“How exciting!” Jade gasped, maybe she wouldn't have to go the roundabout way of meeting up with Calliope!
“Haha yeah. She’s been real cool. Let us run tests and other medical things.”
“Isn’t she amazing! She’s always so nice and kind! I love her.” The Skaian Aquarium was known for its exotic animals and its rehabilitation programs, taking care of sick animals and then releasing them back out into the wild. As of a few months ago, they had found some creatures that were unlike anyone had ever seen. Mermaids and sirens and whatnot were from myths! Creatures conjured by the human mind. At least, up until the Skaian Aquarium had discovered an injured sea spider, one that was massive and had a human-like torso. She had the smarts and cunningness of any other human, but she lived in the sea and had aquatic biology. Her name was Mindfang, and would be the first of many merpeople that the aquarium would take in.
The sea snake known as Calliope was soon to follow. She was searching for shelter and ended up at the aquarium. She was not injured, unlike Mindfang, and was much less violent. Jade couldn’t blame Mindfang for being violent, though. If someone took her from her home then she would be pretty upset too! Calliope was always willing to answer questions about her home, as well as any anatomical questions the staff had. Jade often visited her, just to chat about nothing in particular. They got along splendidly and despite Calliope’s appearance being what some would describe as eerie, Jade loved the way she looked. Calliope was a long and twisting sea snake, being well up to forty feet long! She was also very skeletal, not having any skin! Although what appeared to be bones was also muscle? How did that work? The staff weren’t sure. Nobody was sure, really.
Regardless of what she looked like, Jade adored her! From the moment the two of them met a month ago, they were like two peas in a pod! They just clicked. Almost every conversation went swimmingly, and Jade spent many hours of the day just chatting away with her! And recently, she and Jade had been a bit more…touchy? Nothing too crazy, but Jade often found herself placing kisses on Callie’s cheeks and skull. Jade wasn’t sure if it would be considered a relationship, but they were probably a bit more than friends? It didn’t matter much though, since most interaction between them was just that! Between them! No one else! Despite what Dave and the other workers warned her not to do, Jade often found herself swimming in Callie’s tank with her. Since the temperature of the water was very warm, being around 80 degrees fahrenheit or 26.67 degrees celsius! She didn’t worry about freezing or being too cold to swim back up. She didn’t worry about drowning much at all, since Callie made a point to keep her head near or above the water at all times.
The concern from many of the workers there was that they worried that the merpeople (that’s what Jade had started calling them) would “go rogue” and start hunting down humans. Jade thought that was ridiculous, so she kept doing it.
“She’s pretty cool.”
“Any updates with what’s going on or…?” Dave nodded, “We’re thinking about moving some of them to exhibits for the public. With their expressed permission, obviously.”
“Of course of course.” Jade nodded along. She had heard all about the trials and arguments that the aquarium had with both the government and within its own walls. Many members of the staff simply wanted to ship them off to government sites for experimentation while others wanted to continue to learn about them in a more humane and rehabilitation-like manner. Dave was among the latter group. He ended up being one of the ones chosen to go to congress to argue in the merpeoples’ favor, which Jade heard all about. In the end, surprisingly, the humanitarians had won. There was still some debate about whether or not the public should know about it, but whatever happened had to be better than them being shipped off to torture sites!
What was to happen with the public and the merpeople was out of their hands. However, the aquarium workers had started to argue for more enriching tanks. Currently they were just put into large, glass tubes with basically nothing inside. The argument being posed as of now is that if a human was put into a room with nothing in it, then they would go insane! It is cruel to expect that of any animal, especially not one with sentience.
“Currently we’re planning on moving Calliope into a temporary holding tank so we can move Mindfang to Calliope’s current tank and then move Calliope into Mindfang’s tank since it’s bigger.”
“That sounds really tricky…”
“Eh. We’ve done crazier things.” He just shrugs.”
The two approach the labyrinth that lay underneath the aquarium, it was like a hospital, but with a more scientific vibe to it. It had many large rooms solely for storing large animals like the merpeople found in the ocean. There was a lot of other storage as well, but Jade had never seen it. It was also a research and medical lab, for when animals had to be taken care of or studied. Dave scanned his ID and the large metal door opened. It sounded like a fork being ground against a chalkboard and Jade covered her ears with her hands in response. Once the door opened fully, she removed them from her head and walked inside.
Jade made sure to anticipate the sound when she stepped in, tensing up as Dave scanned his ID again to close the door. The door made the horrible scraping sound and she and Dave both visibly cringed.
“Why does it even do that??” She asked, baffled. The aquarium was built almost perfectly, so how in the world was the door able to scrape across the floor? “I wish I knew. It has done that every, single, time, that I have been here, Jade. Every single goddamn time.”
Dave had scoffed in exasperation and Jade chuckled a little at him. The two would’ve made it to Calliope’s tank in record time if Jade hadn’t gotten distracted. There were many tanks in the basement of the aquarium, most of them dim and empty. So when Jade had noticed Dirk standing over a tank that was usually empty. He seemed very involved with his work, so Jade wouldn’t call out to him, but she did gesture at Dave for an explanation.
“Hm? Oh. Yeah, Dirk’s working with the new guy. Apparently he’s Calliope’s twin brother.”
“Oh!!!” She chirped, putting her hands together, smiling. And then, she remembered all the things Calliope and told her about him and her face immediately fell, “Oh.” “So I assume you’ve heard about him?”
“Unfortunately.” Jade seethed out quietly, crossing her arms tightly over her chest. Dave snorted. “So…what’s Dirk doing with him? I thought he didn’t really like anybody?”
“He doesn’t seem to mind Dirk.”
“How come?” Dave could only shrug.
The tank that held Calliope wasn’t too far from where they were. Dave got a text from one of the aquarium managers that he had to return back up to the surface to take care of some things. Jade could only laugh a little at his dramatic groan as he almost immediately began to come up with excuses to stall for time. Dave dropped Jade off at Calliope’s tank, despite her not needing it, and taking the longest route possible back up the stairs. The room that Calliope’s tank was in smelt constantly like sea water. Like every room, there was a long platform that led to the top of the tank. Since Calliope was always very amicable and polite, they had a ladder installed so a person could enter and exit the water if necessary. The staff trusted Calliope. She had shown no desire to escape and since she did medical examinations and studies without issue, it was decided to just install a ladder into it.
From the moment Jade walked into the room, Calliope was visible. She was very long and her coloring went from a medium shade of green that got darker as you went along her body. Her tail almost a pure shade of black. She had these little fins that were all over her spine that were a bright lime color. This shade of green was shared with her cheek spirals, eyes, and freckles she had! Calliope had told Jade that all of her lime green spots would glow if she went down deep into the ocean, although due to the light and lack of depth within her tank, she couldn’t show Jade. Jade could see Calliope from a mile away, and her heart began to race. What was supposed to be a walkway became a diving board in Jade’s mind. She slipped off her socks and shoes, leaving them in a neat pile.
“CALLIE!” Jade shouted and her bare feet began to slam against the metal bars. It felt like running across floor grates, but Jade didn’t care. There was a few seconds in between her shout and her diving into the water. Calliope had shifted in her tank, adjusting herself so she and Jade wouldn’t hit each other.
Warm water enveloped her, like a hug or blanket. Her clothes detached themselves from her skin, waving and flowing like coral. She felt her glasses slip from her face, despite her going into the water face first. Opening her eyes to grab them was out of the question, since she didn’t want to deal with salty eyes. Before she even got the chance to think though, a pair of sharp, skeletal hands gently lifted her by her under arms. She tilted her head upwards, her face breaching the surface. The air was cold as the warm water slipped down the curves of her face. Her vision was blurry, even as she wiped the water from her eyes. That was until Calliope took her glasses from the water, shaking them to get as much water off as she could.
Gently, Calliope set the glasses  on Jade’s face. “Hello, love.” Jade giggled, her cheeks flushing slightly. As water dripped from her glasses, Calliope’s face came into view. Despite Calliope’s opinion, Jade loved holding her face. The spiral patterns on her cheeks were so cute, her eyes were large and had thick eyelashes. Jade loved her face, she loved her high cheekbones and her heart shaped nose.
“Hehehe, hi Callie.” She said, pressing her lips against Calliope’s forehead. “How have you been? I’ve heard that they’re possibly moving you!”
Before responding, Calliope carried Jade over to the ladder and sat her down, so she was sitting on one of the rungs. Her upper chest was out of the water, her shirt pressed flat against her skin. Calliope was also out of the water slightly, but it was just her head and the top of her broad shoulders. Her hands were wrapped around the sides of the ladder, her eyes not moving from Jade. “They are indeed! They worry that being here by myself with no surroundings will cause me to become stressed.”
Jade cupped Calliope’s cheek, “Are you…stressed?”
“Oh! Hee hee, not at all! While the days do tend to blur, and sometimes it can get lonely, but that isn’t anything I’m not used to.” Jade frowned. “Ah, however, I am not as alone as I was when I was out in the ocean. I get to see and talk with people frequently.”
Calliope reached her hand out of the water, and pushed a piece of Jade’s hair out of her face, “And, I love getting to see you. How can I be stressed when I know that you are coming to visit?”
“Hehe!” Jade pressed a kiss to Calliope’s forehead, “I know that being here isn’t toooo exciting hehe, but have you done anything interesting lately?”
As Calliope began to speak, Jade lowered herself down a rung. The cold air had begun to bother her, and the tightness of her shirt was beginning to bother her. All of her body was underwater from her neck down. Calliope followed suit, her body shifting in the water. Jade’s green eyes turned from Calliope’s and towards the swishing movement of her tail. Where did her torso begin and her tail end…? Questions for another time, Jade supposed. Despite her no longer keeping eye contact, she was still paying attention.”
“Dirk recently introduced me to land chess! It is very similar to a game that my brother and I used to play. The rules are a little different, but they are stagnant and don’t change, so it was very easy to pick up on!”
“Yeah??? I never was too good at chess…” “I could teach you, if you’d like!”
“That might be fun! Did you end up beating Dirk?”
“Oh yes! And Dave as well. It was good fun! I sometimes wonder what my brother would think of the game…haa. That’s a silly thing to think about, don’t you think?”
There was silence for a moment, neither sure what to say. Jade put her hand against Calliope’s cheek, feeling the spiral mark on her.
“I wonder what he’s up to…”
Before Jade could stop the words from coming out of her mouth, she spoke, “Maybe you can ask Dirk about him?”
“Dirk? Why would…?” Then it clicked, her hand went up to her mouth slowly and Jade cringed.
“I’m sorry Callie, maybe I shouldn't've-”
“No! No, don’t apologize. Is he…alright?”
“I think so. I didn’t see him, but Dirk was with him! So I am sure he’s fine.”
“It is probably for the best that you didn’t see him.” Calliope stated. Jade could see the odd expression on her face, but she could not tell what it was. Despite that, she knew something she should do. She took Calliope by her hand, and pushed against the walls of the tank. She swam out into the tank, Callie following shortly behind her. “Goodness Jade! You should be careful, love.”
“Hehe, I’ll be okay!”
“You should still be careful, something could always happen and-”
“And you’ll be there.” Jade said, flipping onto her back and floating there.
Calliope smiled at her softly and went under the water for a moment. From her limited position, Jade could tell that Calliope was going in a small circle. She rose from the water behind Jade’s head, holding it above the water slightly more than it had been before. She gently touched Jade’s face, her skin warm under her touch. Their eyes connected, and Calliope leaned down and pressed her nose hole to the human’s forehead.
“I like it when it’s just us.”
“Yes.” Calliope agreed, running her clawed fingers through Jade’s hair as it moved in the water.
Jade turned around suddenly, kicking her feet to keep her head afloat. “I can’t wait until you get moved into a not boring tank! I’m almost scuba certified.”
“Scuba certified?”
“That means that someone can safely scuba dive deep into the water! When they go through the certification process, they are trained on how to use all of the equipment and stay safe. When I get certified, I’ll be able to go into the water with you! And when you get a new tank with all sorts of cool things instead of it being empty and isolating, we can explore it together!” Water entered into her nose as she spoke, turning around so she was facing Calliope properly. She coughed out the water and gasped for a breath. Despite this, she still smiled with the same excitement that she had spoken with. Calliope was worried for a second, but when Jade breathed three consecutive breaths without coughing or sputtering, her anxiety was lifted.
Jade wrapped her arms around Calliope’s chest, her foot touching Calliope’s tail. Her nose was barely above the water, but she wasn’t too worried. They were still, and the water reflected that. Calliope put her head against Jade’s, also wrapping her arms around the other. The tank she was in mimicked her home’s temperature, but no matter how warm it was supposed to be, she still felt cold. And often, alone. But when Jade was here, when they were so close. How could she feel anything else but warmth and comfort?
“That sounds delightful Jade. I cannot wait.”

From Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. 7440Khz 1259 14 APR 2024 - RNZ PACIFIC (NEW ZEALAND) in ENGLISH from RANGITAIKI. SINPO = 55344. English, s/on w/bellbird int. until pips and news @1300z anchored by Peter McIlwaine. Iran launched explosive drones and fired missiles at Israel in its first direct attack on Israeli territory, a retaliatory strike that raised the threat of a wider regional conflict, as the US pledged "ironclad" backing for Israel. Israel's military spokesperson, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, said Iran launched dozens of ground-to-ground missiles at Israel, most of them intercepted outside Israeli borders. They included more than 10 cruise missiles, he said. The Iranian salvo of more than 200 drones and missiles caused light damage to one Israeli military facility, Hagari said. The Israeli military later said it was not advising any residents to prepare to take shelter. This revision of an earlier alert appeared to signal the end of the threat. Iran warned Israel and the United States on Sunday of a much larger response if there is any retaliation for its mass drone and missile attack on Israeli territory overnight, as Israel said "the campaign is not over yet". NSW Police are investigating if Joel Cauchi was targeting women when he murdered six people, including Ashlee Good, Jade Young, Dawn Singleton, Pikria Darchia and Faraz Tahir, during a nightmarish stabbing spree in Sydney. The Queensland man entered the busy Bondi Junction Westfield shopping centre around 3.10 pm on Saturday afternoon, the first day of school holidays, and took a large knife from his backpack, before killing five women and one man. The RSA is describing the bashing of a war memorial near Waipukurau as a senseless act of vandalism. The bronze plaque on the front of the memorial at Hātuma has been struck several times and severely damaged. RSA spokesman Peter Jackson said it was unbelievable that anyone could have so little respect for the community members who served and gave their lives in the first and second world wars. He said it would not be possible to fix the plaque by Anzac Day. A Woman having difficulty getting disability benefits for Long COVID says all of these cases need personal case worker assigned as the process takes too long. Their parents met in Italy, when his mother was studying art and design in Florence and their father was a chef at his fathers restaurant. After the falling in love, they recolated to Long Beach, California, her hometown in order for her to finish her internship. A year later they had Stefan, then a year or so later, Amalia who Stefan is quite protective over. During their time growing up in Long Beach, Stefan had his ups and downs in life, but generally grew up within a loving, caring household. While he resided there, he would often daydream of a life elsewhere. He loved nature, learning new things and exploring new places. he also had a creative mind-set and would often be found sketching and trying to create new dishes. He was a curious soul with a tendency to see the beauty in others and the world around him. He is intelligent to a degree, goal-oriented and a determined person. He is considered to be calm, sensible and a 'voice of reason' amongst his friends with a naturally wry personality and can come across blunt at times due to the way that he speaks the truth, but never with intent to inflict harm unless otherwise provoked. He may look calm and innocent looking on the outside but those that go out their way to be mean in any sense to himself or others he is close to, he won't hesitate to fight back and stand up for what he believes in. He is fiercely loyal, protective and a hopeless romantic and is the type of person that if he saw you sitting alone and looking left out of the crowd. He’d come sit with you and attempt to spark up a conversation. He also adores deep conversations that ponder and question things rather than boring small talk and values those that value his time.

BOOKS BY ASIAN AUTHORS MASTERLIST #stopasianhate
In light of recent events and the growing anti- Asian hate in the US and UK over the course of the pandemic I wanted to put together a masterlist of books by Asian authors. Obviously, it’s not extensive and there are HUNDREDS out there, but supporting art by Asian creators is a way of showing support; read their stories, educate ourselves. It goes without saying that we should all be putting effort into reading stories of POC and by POC because even through fiction we’re learning about different cultures, countries and heritages. So here’s some books to start with by Asian authors!
Here is a link also for resources to educate and petitions to sign (especially if you don’t read haha). It’s important that we educate ourselves and uplift Asian voices right now. Your anti-racism has to include every minority that faces it.
https://anti-asianviolenceresources.carrd.co/
for UK peeps, this is a good read: We may not hear about the anti Asian racism happening here, but it is definitely happening. https://www.harpersbazaar.com/uk/culture/culture-news/a35692226/its-time-we-stopped-downplaying-the-uks-anti-asian-racism/
 THE BOOKS:
·         War Cross- Marie Lu ( the worldbuilding in this is IMMENSE.)
For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit.
·         Star Daughter- Shveta Thakrar
A beautiful story about a girl who is half human and half star, and she must go to the celestial court to try to save her father after he has fallen ill. And before she knows it, she is taking part in a magical competition that she must win!
·         These Violent Delights- Chloe Gong (I told my little sister to read this book yesterday bc she has a thing for a Leo as Romeo- so if you want deadly good looking Romeos, badass Juliet’s and to learn about 1920s Shanghai- this is for you.)
The year is 1926, and Shanghai hums to the tune of debauchery. A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos. A Romeo and Juliet retelling.
·         The Poppy War- R.F Kuang (My fave fantasy series just fyi- it’s soul crushing in the best way. Rebecca Kuang is a god of an author).
A brilliantly imaginative talent makes her exciting debut with this epic historical military fantasy, inspired by the bloody history of China’s twentieth century and filled with treachery and magic, in the tradition of Ken Liu’s Grace of Kings and N.K. Jemisin’s Inheritance Trilogy.
·         Loveboat Taipei-  Abigail Hing Wen  (Really heartwarming and insightful!)
When eighteen-year-old Ever Wong’s parents send her from Ohio to Taiwan to study Mandarin for the summer, she finds herself thrust among the very over-achieving kids her parents have always wanted her to be, including Rick Woo, the Yale-bound prodigy profiled in the Chinese newspapers since they were nine—and her parents’ yardstick for her never-measuring-up life.
·         Sorcerer to the Crown- Zen Cho (if anyone is looking for another Howl’s Moving Castle, look no further than this book)
At his wit’s end, Zacharias Wythe, freed slave, eminently proficient magician, and Sorcerer Royal of the Unnatural Philosophers—one of the most respected organizations throughout all of Britain—ventures to the border of Fairyland to discover why England’s magical stocks are drying up.
·         Emergency Contact- Mary H.K. Choi (very wholesome and fun rom-com!)
For Penny Lee high school was a total nonevent. When she heads to college in Austin, Texas, to learn how to become a writer, it’s seventy-nine miles and a zillion light years away from everything she can’t wait to leave behind.
 ·         Jade City- Fonda Lee (I am reading this currently and can I just say- I think everyone who loves fantasy and blood feuds in a story should read this.)
JADE CITY is a gripping Godfather-esque saga of intergenerational blood feuds, vicious politics, magic, and kungfu. The Kaul family is one of two crime syndicates that control the island of Kekon. It's the only place in the world that produces rare magical jade, which grants those with the right training and heritage superhuman abilities.
 ·         A Pho Love Story- Loan Le
When Dimple Met Rishi meets Ugly Delicious in this funny, smart romantic comedy, in which two Vietnamese-American teens fall in love and must navigate their newfound relationship amid their families’ age-old feud about their competing, neighbouring restaurants.
·         Rebelwing- Andrea Tang
Business is booming for Prudence Wu. A black-market-media smuggler and scholarship student at the prestigious New Columbia Preparatory Academy, Pru is lucky to live in the Barricade Coalition where she is free to study, read, watch, and listen to whatever she wants.
·         Wings of the Locust- Joel Donato Ching Jacob
Tuan escapes his mundane and mediocre existence when he is apprenticed to Muhen, a charming barangay wiseman. But, as he delves deeper into the craft of a mambabarang and its applications in espionage, sabotage and assassination, the young apprentice is overcome by conflicting emotions that cause him to question his new life.
 ·         The Travelling Cat Chronicles- Hiro Arikawa
Sometimes you have to leave behind everything you know to find the place you truly belong...
Nana the cat is on a road trip. He is not sure where he's going or why, but it means that he gets to sit in the front seat of a silver van with his beloved owner, Satoru.
 ·         Super Fake Love Song- David Yoon
From the bestselling author of Frankly in Love comes a contemporary YA rom-com where a case of mistaken identity kicks off a string of (fake) events that just may lead to (real) love.
  ·         Parachutes- Kelly Yang
Speak enters the world of Gossip Girl in this modern immigrant story from New York Times bestselling author Kelly Yang about two girls navigating wealth, power, friendship, and trauma.
·         The Grace of Kings- Ken Liu ( One of the Time 100 Best Fantasy Books Of All Time!)
Two men rebel together against tyranny—and then become rivals—in this first sweeping book of an epic fantasy series from Ken Liu, recipient of Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy awards.
·         Wicked Fox- Kat Cho
A fresh and addictive fantasy-romance set in modern-day Seoul.
 ·         Descendant of the Crane- Joan He
In this shimmering Chinese-inspired fantasy, debut author Joan He introduces a determined and vulnerable young heroine struggling to do right in a world brimming with deception.
 ·         Pachinko- Min Jin Lee
Richly told and profoundly moving, Pachinko is a story of love, sacrifice, ambition, and loyalty. From bustling street markets to the halls of Japan's finest universities to the pachinko parlors of the criminal underworld, Lee's complex and passionate characters--strong, stubborn women, devoted sisters and sons, fathers shaken by moral crisis--survive and thrive against the indifferent arc of history.
·         America is in the Heart- Carlos Bulosan
First published in 1946, this autobiography of the well known Filipino poet describes his boyhood in the Philippines, his voyage to America, and his years of hardship and despair as an itinerant laborer following the harvest trail in the rural West.
 ·         Days of Distraction- Alexandra Chang
A wry, tender portrait of a young woman — finally free to decide her own path, but unsure if she knows herself well enough to choose wisely—from a captivating new literary voice.
·         The Astonishing Colour of After Emily X.R Pan
Alternating between real and magic, past and present, friendship and romance, hope and despair, The Astonishing Color of After is a novel about finding oneself through family history, art, grief, and love.
·         The Gilded Wolves- Roshani Chokshi
It's 1889. The city is on the cusp of industry and power, and the Exposition Universelle has breathed new life into the streets and dredged up ancient secrets. Here, no one keeps tabs on dark truths better than treasure-hunter and wealthy hotelier Séverin Montagnet-Alarie. When the elite, ever-powerful Order of Babel coerces him to help them on a mission, Séverin is offered a treasure that he never imagined: his true inheritance.
·         When Dimple met Rishi- Sandhya Menon
Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.
·         On Earth we’re briefly Gorgeous- Ocean Vuong
Poet Ocean Vuong's debut novel is a shattering portrait of a family, a first love, and the redemptive power of storytelling.
·         Fierce Fairytales- Nikita Gill
Complete with beautifully hand-drawn illustrations by Gill herself, Fierce Fairytales is an empowering collection of poems and stories for a new generation.
BOOKS BEING RELEASED LATER THIS YEAR TO PREORDER:
·         Counting down with you- Tashie Bhuiyan- 4th May
A reserved Bangladeshi teenager has twenty-eight days to make the biggest decision of her life after agreeing to fake date her school’s resident bad boy.
How do you make one month last a lifetime?
·         Gearbreakers- Zoe Hana Mikuta- June 29th
Two girls on opposite sides of a war discover they're fighting for a common purpose--and falling for each other--in Zoe Hana Mikuta's high-octane debut Gearbreakers, perfect for fans of Pacific Rim, Pierce Brown's Red Rising Saga, and Marie Lu's Legend series
·         XOXO- Axie Oh- 13th July
When a relationship means throwing Jenny’s life off the path she’s spent years mapping out, she’ll have to decide once and for all just how much she’s willing to risk for love.
·         She who became the sun- Shelley Parker-Chan- 20th July
Mulan meets The Song of Achilles in Shelley Parker-Chan's She Who Became the Sun, a bold, queer, and lyrical reimagining of the rise of the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty from an amazing new voice in literary fantasy.
·         Jade Fire Gold- June C.L Tan- October 12th
Two girls on opposite sides of a war discover they're fighting for a common purpose--and falling for each other--in Zoe Hana Mikuta's high-octane debut Gearbreakers, perfect for fans of Pacific Rim, Pierce Brown's Red Rising Saga, and Marie Lu's Legend series
Keep sharing, signing petitions and donating where you can. The more people who are actively anti-racist, the better. And if your anti-racism doesn’t include the Asian community then go and educate yourself! BLM wasn’t a trend and neither is this. We have to stand up against white supremacy, and racism and stereotypes and we have to support the communities that need our support. Part of that can include cultivating your reading so you’re reading more diversely and challenging any stereotypes western society may have given you.
Feel free to reblog and add any more recommendations and resources of course!

*Long sigh*
Alright guys. I’m here with an angry post about this. Please bear with me.
Tumblr media
[x] This is a map of the Columbia Watershed. The Snake River is highlighted in yellow, the Columbia in blue.
Tumblr media
[x] This is a map of the dams on the Columbia and the Snake. Bonneville, The Dalles, John Day, and McNary are on the Columbia. Ice Harbor, Lower Monumental, Little Goose, and Lower Granite are on the Snake.
On February 6, 2021, Rep. Mike Simpson (R-ID) proposed a " $33 billion infrastructure and community investment strategy that would breach the four lower Snake River dams and reorder much of the fish, energy and commodity transportation systems of the Pacific Northwest.”
[x]
Good news, right?
Yeah, it’s great news until you get to the part about the time frame.
“If turned into legislation, passed and implemented according to Simpson’s timeline, Lower Granite Dam would be breached in the summer of 2030 and the river that was swallowed by slackwater 55 years earlier would reemerge. The breaching of Little Goose, Lower Monumental and Ice Harbor dams would follow and the entire stretch of the river would return to its free-flowing state by 2031.“ That’s NINE YEARS. 9. N-I-N-E. The Southern Residents can barely find enough food now. There’s no way they’ll last 9 years and still be an even barely viable population (not that they’re a strong, viable population at the moment anyways).
Lets go over everyone who died from 2010-2020. 10 years, approximately how many years it will be for the river to be free flowing.

K43 (Saturna) Female born to K12 (Sequim), her third calf, February, 2010
J47 (Notch) Male born to J35 (Tahlequah), her first calf, January, 2010
Eighteen were born and survived (to this point when I’m posting this- February 10, 2021). Eleven are males, two are unknown genders, five are females.
Now, we’ve lost 15 females over the course of 10 years and have only gained FIVE in that same time period.
Now that we’ve looked at the births and deaths, lets look at the current living population, shall we?
J pod has 10 adult females, (2 post-reproductive); 3 young females; 2 adult males; 8 young males; 1 unknown gender.
K pod has 7 adult females (2 post-reproductive); 1 young female; 7 adult males; 2 young males.
L pod has 15 adult females (5 post-reproductive); 3 young females; 6 adult males; 9 young males; 1 unknown gender.
Total Males: 15 adult, 18 juvenile
Total Females: 23 reproductive, 9 post reproductive, 7 juvenile
Total Unknown Genders: 2
Now, that may seem like a good number of females, but we have to keep in mind that they need to produce healthy, living, viable, FEMALE calves to keep this population growing. While all calves are loved and cherished in this population, we need more females. This population is on a downhill trend that can NOT LAST NINE YEARS WITHOUT ENOUGH FOOD.  “When the whales starve, their pregnancies fail. Southern Resident females used to give birth once every five years, just like females in other killer whale populations. But their average birth frequency has dropped to about once every ten years.“ [x]
For anyone who still might not be getting the picture, here. I have a picture for you. This is the population census that the Center for Whale Research updates on December 31 and July 1 each year.
Tumblr media
[x] Do you see the trend? It’s falling. This population was decimated by the capture era (1960s-1970s) and is now continuing to struggle FIFTY YEARS LATER.
Another point: Reducing whale watching will NOT HELP. Whale watching companies help keep recreational boaters away from the whales and help inform them on the laws. They also report sightings and help keep population tabs. If a whale isn’t looking good, they can report that. If they didn’t see a whale for multiple encounters in a row and the CWR hasn’t been able to get out with them, they can let CWR know. This is a community effort, tracking and monitoring the SRKW. Whale Watch boats also ensure that, when Sound Watch (which mostly operates off the West side of San Juan Island) is not around, that local recreational boaters follow the Be Whale Wise guidelines and keep their distance from the Southern Residents.
“The Southern Residents pulled through the shooting era and pulled through the capture era, but if Ken is right, they will not pull through the conservation era. They are long-lived animals, so they will still be here—yet they will be gone...“We’re at the point—we’re past the point—of no return.”“ [x]
I appreciate Rep. Mike Simpson’s efforts to try to breach the Lower Snake River Dams, but the time to act is now. We are watching extinction happen before our very eyes. Breach the dams in 2021! NO FISH, NO BLACKFISH! “What will we lose if we let the Southern Residents go extinct?” “Our minds.” [x]

most of the UK reviews i’ve read of martin eden have been a disappointment, tbh. i don’t know if this is because critics have been busy with cannes or because outlets here just don’t have the space, or because it’s kind of seen as old news. i have seen no real engagement with the politics or form beyond a couple of cursory lines, and it’s a shame because... i think it’s really rich wrt those elements?
so i am looking again at the (wonderful) review from film comment last year and it’s such a shame that it’s not available freely online. so i thought i’d post it here behind a cut. it’s long but worth it imo (and also engages really interestingly with marcello’s other films). it’s by phoebe chen.
COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS              Jan  3, 2020                    BY PHOEBE CHEN
EARLY IN JACK LONDON’S 1909 NOVEL MARTIN EDEN, there is a scattering of references to technical ephemera that the 20th century will promptly leave behind: “chromos and lithographs,” those early attempts at large-scale reproduction; “a vast camera obscura,” by then a centuries-old relic; a bullfight so fervid it’s like “gazing into a kinetoscope,” that proto-cinematic spectacle of cloistered motion. These objects now seem like archaic curios, not much more than the flotsam of culture from the moment it shifted gears to mass production. It’s a change in scale that also ensnares the novel’s title character, a hardy young sailor and autodidact-turned-writer-célèbre, famously an avatar of London’s own hollowing transmutation into a figure for mass consumption. But, lucky him—he remains eminent now on the other side of a century; chance still leaves a world of names and faces to gather dust. Easily the most arresting aspect of Pietro Marcello’s new adaptation is its spotlight on the peripheral: from start to end, London’s linear Künstlerroman is intercut with a dizzying range of archival footage, from a decaying nitrate strip of anarchist Errico Malatesta at a workers’ rally to home video–style super 16mm of kids jiving by an arcade game. In these ghostly interludes, Marcello reanimates the visual detritus of industrial production as a kind of archival unconscious.
This temporal remixing is central to Marcello’s work, mostly experimental documentaries that skew auto-ethnographic and use elusive, essayistic editing to constellate place and memory, but always with a clear eye to the present. Marcello’s first feature, Crossing the Line (2007), gathers footage of domestic migrant workers and the nocturnal trains that barrel them to jobs across the country, laying down a recurring fascination with infrastructure. By his second feature, The Mouth of the Wolf (2009), there is already the sense of an artist in riveting negotiation with the scope of his story and setting. Commissioned by a Jesuit foundation during Marcello’s yearlong residency in the port city of Genoa, the film ebbs between a city-symphonic array and a singular focus on the story of a trans sex worker and her formerly incarcerated lover, still together after 20-odd years and spells of separation. Their lives are bound up with a poetic figuration of the city’s making, from the mythic horizon of ancient travails, recalled in bluer-than-blue shots of the Ligurian Sea at dawn, to new-millennium enterprise in the docklands, filled with shipping crates and bulldozers busy with destruction.
Marcello brings a similar approach to Martin Eden, though its emphasis is inverted: it’s the individual narrative that telescopes a broader history of 20th-century Italy. In this pivotal move, Marcello and co-writer Maurizio Braucci shift London’s Oakland-set story to Naples, switching the cold expanse of the North Pacific for the Mediterranean and its well-traversed waters. The young century, too, is switched out for an indeterminate period with jumbled signifiers: initial clues point to a time just shy of World War II, though a television set in a working-class household soon suggests the late ’50s, and then a plastic helicopter figurine loosely yokes us to the ’70s. Even the score delights in anachronism, marked by a heavy synth bass that perforates the sacral reverb of a cappella and organ song, like a discotheque in a cathedral. And—why not?—’70s and ’80s Europop throwbacks lend archival sequences a further sense of epochal collapse. While Marcello worked with researcher Alessia Petitto for the film’s analog trove, much of its vintage stock is feigned by hand-tinting and distressing original 16mm footage. Sometimes a medium-change jolts with sudden incongruity, as in a cut to dockworkers filmed in black and white, their faces and hands painted in uncanny approximations of living complexions. Other transitions are so precisely matched to color and texture that they seem extensions of a dream.
Martin’s writer’s optimism is built on a faith in language as the site of communication and mutual recognition. So follows his tragedy.
Patchworked from the scraps of a long century, this composite view seems to bristle against a story of individual formation. It feels like a strange time for an artist’s coming-of-age tale adapted with such sincerity, especially when that central emphasis on becoming—and becoming a writer, no less—is upended by geopolitical and ecological hostility. At first, our young Martin strides on screen with all the endearing curiosity of an archetypal naïf, played by Luca Marinelli with a cannonballing force that still makes room for the gentler affects of embarrassment and first love. Like the novel, the film begins with a dockside rescue: early one morning, Martin saves a young aristocrat from a beating, for which he is rewarded with lunch at the family estate. On its storied grounds, Martin meets the stranger’s luminous sister, Elena Orsini (Jessica Cressy), a blonde-haloed and silk-bloused conduit for his twinned desires of knowledge and class transgression. In rooms of ornate stucco and gilded everything, the Orsinis parade their enthusiasm for education in a contrived show of open-mindedness, a familiar posture of well-meaning liberals who love to trumpet a certain model of education as global panacea. University-educated Elena can recite Baudelaire in French; Martin trips over simple conjugations in his mother tongue. “You need money to study,” he protests, after Elena prescribes him a back-to-school stint. “I’m sure that your family would not ignore such an important objective,” she insists (to an orphan, who first set sail at age 11).
Anyone who has ever been thrilled into critical pursuit by a single moment of understanding knows the first beat of this story. Bolting through book after book, Martin is fired by the ever-shifting measure of his knowledge. In these limitless stretches of facts to come, there’s the promised glow of sheer comprehension, the way it clarifies the world as it intoxicates: “All hidden things were laying their secrets bare. He was drunk with comprehension,” writes London. Marcello is just as attentive to how Martin understands, a process anchored to the past experiences of his working body. From his years of manual labor, he comes to knowledge in a distinctly embodied way, charming by being so literal. At lunch with the Orsinis, he offers a bread roll as a metaphor for education and gestures at the sauce on his plate as “poverty,” tearing off a piece of education and mopping up the remnants with relish. Later, in a letter to Elena, he recounts his adventures in literacy: “I note down new words, I turn them into my friends.” In these early moments, his expressions are as playful as they are trenchant, enlivened by newfound ways of articulating experience. His writer’s optimism is built on a faith in language as the site of communication and mutual recognition. So follows his tragedy.
One of Marcello’s major structural decisions admittedly makes for some final-act whiplash, when a cut elides the loaded years of Martin’s incremental success, stratospheric fame, and present fall into jaded torpor. By now, he is a bottle-blonde chain-smoker with his own palazzo and entourage, set to leave on a U.S. press tour even though he hasn’t written a thing in years. His ideas have been amplified to unprecedented reach by mass media, and his words circulate as abstract commodities for a vulturine audience. For all its emphasis on formation, Martin Eden is less a story of ebullient self-discovery than one of inhibiting self-consciousness. There is no real sense that Martin’s baseline character has changed, because it hasn’t. Even his now best-selling writing is the stuff of countless prior rejected manuscripts. From that first day at the Orsini estate, when his roughness sticks out to him as a fact, he learns about the gulf between a hardier self-image and the surface self that’s eyed by others.
WITH SUCH A DEEPLY INHABITED PERFORMANCE by Marinelli, it’s intuitive to read the film as a character study, but the lyrical interiority of London’s novel never feels like the point of Marcello’s adaptation. Archival clips—aged by time, or a colorist’s hand—often seem to illustrate episodes from Martin’s past, punctuating the visual specificity of individual memory: a tense encounter with his sister cuts to two children dancing with joyous frenzy; his failed grammar-school entrance exam finds its way to sepia-stained shots of a crippled, shoeless boy. These insertions are more affective echoes than literal ones, the store of a single life drawn from a pool of collective happening.
But, that catch: writing in the hopes of being read, as Martin does (as most do), means feeding some construct of a distinctive self. While the spotlight of celebrity singles out the destructive irony of Martin’s aggressive individualism, Marcello draws from Italy’s roiling history of anarchist and workerist movements to complicate the film’s political critique, taking an itinerant path through factions and waves from anarcho-communism in the early 1900s to the pro-strike years of autonomist Marxism in the late ’70s. In place of crystalline messaging is a structure that parallels Martin’s own desultory politics, traced in both film and novel through his commitment to liberal theorist Herbert Spencer. Early on, Martin has an epiphanic encounter with Spencer’s First Principles (a detail informed by London’s own discovery of the text as a teen), which lays out a systematic philosophy of natural laws, and offers evolution as a structuring principle for the universe—a “master-key,” London offers. Soon, Martin bellows diatribes shaped by Spencer’s more divisive, social Darwinist ideas of evolutionary justice, as though progress is only possible through cruel ambivalence. Late in the film, an image of a drunk and passed-out Martin cuts to yellowed footage of a young boy penciling his name—“Martin Eden”—over and over in an exercise book, a dream of becoming turned memory.
In Marcello’s previous feature, Lost and Beautiful (2015), memory is more explicitly staged as an attachment to landscape. Like Alice Rohrwacher’s Happy as Lazzaro, Lost and Beautiful plays as a pastoral elegy but lays out the bureaucratic inefficiency that hastens heritage loss through neglect. Rolling fields make occasional appearances in Martin Eden, but its Neapolitan surroundings evoke a different history. Far from the two oceans that inspired a North American tradition of maritime literature, the Mediterranean guards its own idiosyncrasies of promise and catastrophe. Of the Sea’s fraught function as a regional crossroads, Marcello has noted, in The Mouth of the Wolf, a braiding of fate and agency: “They are men who transmigrate,” the opening voiceover intones. “We don’t know their stories. We know they chose, found this place, not others.” Mare Nostrum—“Our Sea”—is the Roman epithet for the Mediterranean, a possessive projection that abides in current vernacular. Like so many cities that cup the sea, Naples is a site of immigrant crossing, a fact slyly addressed in Martin Eden with a fleeting long shot of black workers barreling hay in a field of slanted sun, and, at the end, a group of immigrants sitting on a beach at dusk. Brief, but enough to mark the changing conditions of a new century.
Not much is really new, however: not the perils of migration, nor the proselytizing individualists, nor the media circus, nor the classist distortions of taste, nor, blessedly, the kind of learning for learning’s sake that stokes and sustains an interest in the world. Toward the end of the film, there is a shot of our tired once-hero, slumped in the back seat of a car, that cuts to sepia stock of children laughing and running to reach the camera-as-car-window, as if peering through glass and time. It recalls a scene from Wim Wenders’s Wings of Desire, which leaps backward through a similar gaze, when the weary angel Cassiel looks out of a car window at the vista of ’80s Berlin and sees, instead, grainy footage of postwar streets strewn with rubble in fresh ruin. Where human perception is shackled to linearity, these wool-coated and scarfed seraphs—a materialization of Walter Benjamin’s “angel of history”—see all of time in a simultaneous sweep, as they wander Berlin with their palliative touch. Marcello’s Martin Eden mosaics a view less pointedly omniscient, but just as filled with a humanist commitment to the turning world, even as Martin slides into disillusion. All its faces plucked from history remind me of a line from a Pasolini poem: “Everything on that street / was human, and the people all clung / to it tightly.”

Rhizomes & Rifling: Caring for Your Jade
Jade Harley Appreciation Walkthrough Version 1.0, January 18, 2020 By tacitTherapist [tentacleTherapist] =============================== TABLE OF CONTENTS =============================== 1. Rose: Egress...................................... [ZZZZ] ================================================================================== [A000] Exceptions and Exceptionalism ================================================================================== It is of the utmost importance that you understand this: Jade Harley, and all versions thereof, are driven by exceptionalism. Whether it be in rocket science, gardening, combat, or romance, Jade Harley will throw herself into it, with a rigor generally reserved for those passions of the heart only middle-aged men with basement train sets can fathom. Jade Harley is an asset in any endeavor, in no small part because of her natural intelligence and gumption to work on those aspects where her talent cannot carry her. That said, there will be things she is not good at. Often these small shortcomings are met with a calm collection, the frustration kept suppressed until a later time when it comes pouring back out with vindictive fervor. Other times, it’s a thrown tool and a verbal release of said frustration. A Jade’s emotions will tend to bubble near the surface. In either case, it is important that you address these feelings. Whether by consolation or encouragement, the worst thing to do is ignore how she feels. Jade Harley must be seen. ================================================================================== [B000] Walkthrough (Incomplete) ================================================================================== Caring for your Jade is much like caring for a succulent. Physical resources mean little, they are both hardy as the Paradox Nights are long, and your greatest asset is simply a bit of your spare time and attention. Generally this would be the point in the walkthrough wherein I, a privileged, sheltered person would ramble for an unacceptable length of text, and mention completely unrelated topics such as my recent summering in the Swiss Alps or the time my petulant child’s unhealthy fixation with a cereal mascot, but I’ll deign to spare you the pedantry. It pains me to admit that caring for your Jade is actually not as easy as previously stated. Unlike a succulent, Jade will make their admiration for you subtle. Where a succulent will dry out or wilt in unhealthy conditions, Jade will grin and bear it, convincing herself that she only needs to try a little harder and that her own needs come second. This is dangerous and unhealthy, and I must humbly confess that there are still plenty of moments wherein I’ll be too caught up in my own ideas that Jade’s wants and needs took a back seat. So, as mentioned, time and attention are your greatest assets. However, you will also want mindfulness to hold it all together. I do not mean mindfulness as in the practice of meditation; I mean the capacity to assess her emotional state at any given point in time. As a soul with affinity for Space (regardless of whether your Jade is a Space player), Jades tend towards isolation. Whether it be on a remote Pacific Island or a golden ship, Jades of the Harley variety tend to be left to their own devices for far too long. Granted, a fermentation like that inevitably leads to a completely fascinating personality, but that’s for another guide. One can really only imagine: what does a fully realized Jade, given all the nurturing, love, and attention she needs, look like? Is she more or less outspoken? Is she more charming, or was that a mechanism adapted to make herself more amenable? What are her interests? If you have the answer to all these questions: congratulations! You don’t need to read any further. For everyone else: are you writing this down? Find a pen. You’ll want to remember this. In all ways, caring for Jade Harley is never a chore, but a pleasure. However, as in all things, you can succumb to too much pleasure. Like a Faustian curse, every second you spend with Jade, you forget to manage your own interests. I cannot overstate this: a relationship with Jade Harley is an ambrosia so sweet, I’ve more than once forgotten who I was. This is not an admission of weakness. In fact, I’d describe the times I’m not in sheer awe of our relationship as the most lucid moments of my life. But therein lies the catch: while mutual admiration and attention are cornerstones of an ideal relationship with Jade Harley, so too are small pockets of separation. This may seem counter-intuitive at first; after all, I devoted a good portion of this walkthrough to emphasizing the importance of spending time and attention on your Jade. However, like all flames of passion, you must temper it with distance. And like a flame, the source must be pure. A pure expression of self. In many ways, this walkthrough is not just a guide to caring for Jade, but also for caring for yourself. You should care for yourself, not just because it helps you better care for Jade... but because Jade would want you to. ================================================================================== [B100] Broodfester Influence & You ================================================================================== So you’ve made it this far. Well done. Caring for someone else and practicing self care is a delicate balance, but one that is well worth the effort. Unfortunately, this is also a balance ripe for the harvesting by otherworldly beings. If you aren’t familiar with the Horrorterrors (formally The Noble Circle of Horrorterrors) consider yourself lucky. To be brief: The Horrorterrors are an ancient race of horrible creatures that reside in the Furthest Ring, a dimension that exists within all timelines and all dimensions and all realities. These creatures only truly care for their own self preservation, but thankfully only tamper with the most well-laid plans. They seem to thrive off suffering or other negative emotions... but they also seem to be attracted to ambition, because ambition sets the stage for disappointment and failure, which are suffering-adjacent. If you are more well-acquainted with The Horrorterrors, my apologies. But I’m going to assume that the fact that you are still able to read and parse this is an indicator that you’ve survived. If this is the case, do know that I’m proud of you. It takes more than strength to survive even one encounter with any of the Horrorterrors. Hell, even a Smaller God is a sight to behold. It is commendable that you’ve not only survived, but also made it this far after the encounter. Incidents involving Horrorterrors tend to leave scars that never completely heal, and I do mean that both physically and figuratively. There is a portion of me that will never truly be the same. In fact, even if you personally have not encountered a Horrorterror, their influence tends to spread across all timelines (given they, again, exist across all timelines) and thus you may have been influenced by them in another reality without knowing it. It is hard to tell. Even with distinct, quantifiable knowledge, it is hard to tell what is real sometimes. But a Jade that has been touched by the Horrorterrors is another matter altogether. The corrupting influence of the Horrorterrors never really goes away. It retreats and goes dormant and may sometimes seem to disappear... but it isn’t really gone. A Jade afflicted by the grimdark throes is a frightening maelstrom of energy and raw, unchecked emotion. This presents you with a conundrum. The only way to calm a broodfester Jade is to assure them that everything will be OK. But everything will not be OK. Simply by virtue of experiencing the woegothic trance means everything will most certainly be not OK. But you have to sell it. You must become the best liar you have ever been, lest you succumb to the weals of terrible calamity. And, as is fitting, not only must you convince Jade to calm her dark, broiling energies, but you must convince yourself as well. Jades are adept at detecting insincerity, especially those attuned to weird powers. If you cannot convince yourself, you will not convince Jade. ================================================================================== [B200] The Turing Test ==================================================================================   The Turing Test, simply put, is a test designed to tell whether a machine is capable of human behavior. Obviously Turing was a hack and the test was dogshit that flagged more false positives than a broken pregnancy test. However, his test poses a good question: what separates humans and machines? Supposing they are indistinguishable behavior-wise, where does human end and machine begin? Do prosthetics count as machinery? Are androids machines or humans? Is there a ratio of flesh to synthetics at which the threshold is crossed from human to machine? Do androids dream of electric sheep? I’m not adequately prepared or experienced to answer these questions, but I can at least posit this: the distinction between machine and human is irrelevant. What matters is behavior. My Jade is full of electronics. I mean this literally. Her body is some percent machine. Perhaps close to or above 50%. At first I was horrified. Disgusted. But after a bit of processing, I realized... this was beautiful. Jade was beautiful. Yes, this is simply a consequence of her fixation with gadgetry, but outside of that context, it is a beautiful act of rebellion against nature itself. Why should nature decide what we look like? Or how our bodies function? Who put that bitch in charge? Fuck nature. No one ever asked to exist. So existing on our own terms is the ideal existence. Jade is incredibly sexy because not only has she actively subverted nature’s intentions for her, but she’s also cultivated a cute little garden in which nature is her subject in a sexy role reversal. Meanwhile, what have I done? Kept all my original flesh? Had all my original teeth fall out just for more original teeth to grow in where the old teeth were? Lost an innumerable numbers of hairs throughout my lifetime? There’s no decision there. No agency. I haven’t shaped my own destiny the same way I was always too afraid to get a tattoo. Ironically, I’ve also found myself in situations wherein I may have failed the Turing Test. My calculating, analytical personality has likely done more to resemble a predetermined machine-like behavioral schema than anything Jade has done to herself. So, to care for your Jade, do be sure to examine your own prejudices. Question what is ‘natural’ and what is ‘desirable.’ Don’t fall back on the laurels of hokey, inaccurate tests. ================================================================================== [B300] Domesticity, Deconstruction, and Delirium ================================================================================== A life with Jade Harley is generally domestic. Regardless of setting, be it in a barren, war-torn wasteland, or even in a Victorian Manor amid political turmoil and societal upheaval, a life with Jade Harley is generally domestic. She craves domesticity, and hopefully you do too. Domestic means pertaining to the home. And home is where the Jade is. And if home isn’t where the Jade is, Jade will build one there. But therein lies the issue. Even if she weren’t a Space player, Jades tend to have and affinity for isolation. Be it because she sits at the top of her educational hierarchy or through literal physical isolation, Jades may have houses, but not homes. And in an attempt to create homes, Jades tend to create limitless expanses of home-related paraphernalia. So much, in fact, that it tends to become a mess. This is where you come in. As the foil to her constructive personality, you must serve as the deconstruction in harmony. Here, deconstruction is actually a force of growth. It clears away the debris, the unnecessary, to create space for the new. This isn’t to say you’ll be going around destroying everything though. Deconstruction in this sense is moreso acts of change: the ceasing of old traditions, the storing of dated antiquity, and the slow, low burning of ancient ritual. This also isn’t to say you are relegated to this role. Any harmonious relationship will have participants share in the construction and deconstruction of various tradition. Just know that Jade Harleys tend to gravitate towards creation. They tend to gravitate so much towards creation, that they will sometimes isolate themselves through excessive creation. Or on the other side of the spectrum, they may pull everything and everyone towards themselves, trapping it all in inescapable singularity. This brings us to delirium. Delirium is the erosion of rationality due to immense external forces. Typically delirium finds Jade caught in the haze of her own isolation. However, delirium may also find you, caught in the anxious active management of your relationship’s deconstruction. This is the catch-22: just as delirium sets in when ridden thin against isolation, so too may it set in as you find the perfect balance between construction and deconstruction. Unfortunately, in this case you have just one avenue of recourse: you must practice balance subtly, in temperance. You must practice so often that it becomes second nature to know when things are out of balance, but not so often that you become fatigued. This is a difficult, nuanced aspect of a relationship with Jade Harley that not many are ready for. And that’s OK. No relationship is perfect. But I write this here to commit to words the weighty task I grapple with each day, that which betters me in all ways. ================================================================================== [C000] Iteration & Recursion ================================================================================== Iteration is the repetition of a process, and recursion is the repeated application of a procedure, generally self-contained. I bring these two concepts to mind to emphasize that the Jade Harley I’ve described thus far is simply one instance of Jade Harley. There is, undoubtedly, a macrocosm of Jade Harleys in existence. Thus, you should use this walkthrough as more of a guide than an actual walkthrough. In fact, throughout the macrocosm, I’d say I’ve Seen not even a fraction of all Jade Harleys, let alone Jades as a whole. Though I have Seen more than my fair share, which is how I feel I have enough expertise to warrant this text. My larger point is that generally things tend to repeat ad infinitum. Time, for the sake of brevity, is a circle. Things repeat themselves. People make the same mistakes over and over again because no one lives long enough to see the pattern. But armed with knowledge and foresight, one may be able to perhaps glimpse the curvature of the event horizon. Problems you encounter while caring for your Jade will occur again if you don’t take steps to prevent them. Those things in mind, please feel free to use this guide as you see fit. Of course, there will be scenarios in which none of the advice contained herein is useful at all, but in those cases I can’t imagine you’d have read this far. In those cases: what are you doing? Go care for your nonconforming Jade. And perhaps consider writing your own guide, and putting it up on the Furthest Ring. ================================================================================== [ZZZZ] Rose: Egress. ================================================================================== I make no claims to the accuracy or efficacy of the information left here. This is simply a repository of the scant few items I’ve learned since entering into a relationship with Jade Harley. It feels overly sanitized to refer to her so often in the third person like this. Generally I’m speaking directly to her, making her the second-person and not the third-person object. There must be some more eloquent way to essay thoughts regarding a subject without making that subject an object or objective. Perhaps it is the science that is flawed. Or perhaps I am flawed. Perhaps this entire bit of nonsensical rambling about my lover carries no weight or significance at all. Perhaps this thing is the errant nonsensical misfiring of dying synapses just before my imminent demise and this entire consciousness has been one long death-induced moment of insanity. That is, ostensibly, not the case. But if it were, I laud myself for going through so much trouble to make this scenario so air-tight. Think about it. She’s had a crush on me since childhood? And those feelings haven’t wavered even for literal years? Nigh on a decade of separation did nothing to dilute it? That’s incredible. By some stroke of luck, I’ve managed to not only make concrete my own wavering sexual identity, but also manage to solidify a relationship with my best friend who has unflinchingly reciprocated. What sort of sordid, half-baked young- adult fiction is this? It’s unbelievable. I experience euphoria every time I see her. Just thinking about her rests my anxious psyche. And I get to sleep next to her... every night? Again, if it was my own dying grey matter that orchestrated this reality, I must admit I’m a bit more well-composed in the moments before death than I realized. Regardless, this is neither the time nor the place to become overly sentimental. There are a number of events on the horizon that are posed to shake up my own reality beyond the scope of these shallow, melodramatic ramblings. I am glad to have finally put these thoughts to words, though. Did they need to be shared with the multiverse? Perhaps not. And yet, perhaps so. After all, what better indicator of my unyielding adoration for Jade Harley than a written record of it, accessible to any given dimension? Pardon my egress. I do hope that by this time you’ve somehow found value in reading this. You’re welcome.

The Prince and The King: Dirk Strider and Kazuaki Nanaki
It may be 4 whole months after the Epilogues came out, but guess what - I’m still thinking about Dirk Strider. And who can blame me, considering… well, everything. Dirk caused a lot of different reactions from everyone, but the way that his character finally clicked for me was watching him take over Jake’s mind and realizing “oh, he’s trying to ‘all will be one with the King’ them”. And then I realized that that would make sense to literally one other person in the whole world, so I decided to write an essay about it. As you do.
Spoilers for Homestuck, including the epilogue, and Hatoful Boyfriend and Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star.
      I. Who are these nerds?
For those of you who don’t know, I’ll give a quick summary of these two characters before I start comparing them.
      A. Dirk Strider
Dirk Strider is one of the human characters in Homestuck. He is the biological father of Dave Strider and Rose Lalonde, and is an alternate Universe version of Bro Strider. He grew up alone in a post apocalyptic world after an alien queen took over Earth. He is the Prince of Heart and a Derse Dreamer. He is a big gay nerd. In the Homestuck Epilogues, his worst traits come out: his self obsession and his splinter selves that come about due to Heart shenanigans, which led to him making some… morally dubious decisions. By which I mean obtained ultimate power and started rewriting the wills of his friends because “he knows best”. Also he’s aware of the fact he’s in a story now, so he became the narrator. And in one of the timelines present in the Epilogues, he killed himself.
      B. Kazuaki Nanaki/The King
Kazuaki Nanaki is a bird featured in Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star. He is a depressed college student studying literature. He fell in love with a boy who ended up pushing him further and further into depression, until the two of them decided to kill themselves. Kazuaki went through with it, his boyfriend did not. He woke up in the afterlife alone and scared. He ends up creating a star from a candle and a chair, which attracts other souls to it’s light. He lured people in because he was lonely, but didn’t want to get hurt again, so he absorbed all the souls into his will, and became the King of the star. And then all the characters end up in the afterlife too, most of whom are still alive, and it’s a whole thing.
So how are they similar? Well, they both are clearly mentally ill, both gay, both killed themselves, both took over the wills of their close friends. Let’s look at their big three narrative similarities: their ascension, their revenge on boyfriends, and their takeovers of will.
II. The Ultimate Self v Kinghood
The Ultimate Self is a concept that was brought up at the end of Homestuck and was explored properly in the Homestuck Epilogues. It seems to be the endpoint for all of the godtiers, wherein they fully realize their Aspect. For example, Rose is ascending as well, and since her aspect is Light (ie knowledge), she gains knowledge of all timelines all at once. Dirk’s aspect, meanwhile, is Heart, which here means soul, so his Ultimate Self is all his splinters combining into one person. (As I sidenote, I wonder how much their classes play into this - Rose is a Seer and is seeing timelines, and Dirk is a Prince and is destroying everyone’s sense of self). It also appears to come along with an awareness of the narrative structure and the fact that they are in the story, which certainly does wonders for the mind. Dirk takes control of it - the narrative, that is - because he believes that he knows best for all his friends.
One thing we know for certain is the ascending fucking hurts. To quote Rose Lalonde: “I am ascending, and it’s terrible.” This process was enough to fully push Dirk over from “has poor judgement and a god complex” to full blown “evil and knows it.” He gains the power to take away the free will of all the other characters, and wants to make them all ascend and then stick their consciousness into robots that he made, because it’s “better” for them. He already carries this plan out with Rose, who he selected to be first because she’s the most like him. Essentially, he wants to make everyone just like him.
Meanwhile, Kinghood seems to have a lot of similarities. Kazuaki seems to gain some reality warping powers once he dies - he is able to transform a room with a candle and a chair into a star with a lighthouse and a throne. He basically makes his world run on fairy tale logic. This extends even to his form. Throughout the game, the characters are represented by photos of birds. However, when Kazuaki is the King, he is rendered in watercolors like the rest of the Holiday Star. Later, when he gets angry, he distorts into a darker colored being with multiple heads, and in his true form he is a monochrome pencil sketch. He also can appear anywhere on the star at any time, because all the residents of the star are under his hivemind. He can control the layout of his home, which is also visible from the outside (in the real world). He can create zones in the star specific to the people within in order to convince them to become one with him. And perhaps scariest of all, he can know the secrets of the people in the star, and toture them with their deepest darkest fear.
So ascending and Kinghood are very similar, except that Kinghood seems to be more in the line of eldritch horror.
III. “I’ll Never Let You Break My Heart Again”
Dirk and Kazuaki also have meaningful romantic relationships with other boys that go super duper bad and end up being their start of darkness. Their whole evil plan can basically be boiled down to getting revenge on the boy who wronged them.
      A. Jake
Jake English is the boy that Dirk was in love with. He is from the same universe as Dirk, but from several centuries in the past (which is the present for us). He is the biological father of Jade Harley and John Egbert. He grew up alone on an island in the Pacific, and styles himself as a manly adventurer. Jake and Dirk end up dating when they enter the game, and break up after a few months because they’re dumb teens who can’t communicate and so are all of their friends. In the Epilogues, Jake is unwillingly wed to Jane Crocker, another of their friends, in the Candy Timeline. In the Meat Timeline, Dirk has taken control of the narration and forces Jake to confess his love for Dirk in front of a huge crowd.
      B. Uzune
Hitori Uzune was the guy that Kazuaki was in love with. He was a fellow college student at the university Kazuaki was attending, and was similarly fucked up and depressed. He convinces Kazuaki that they should kill themselves, and the two of them overdose on pills. But just as Kazuaki is drifting away Hitori gets up and steals Kazuaki’s identity in order to get revenge for his dead brother. That whole thing is actually the main plot of the game, kinda. Hitori refuses to call an ambulance for Kazuaki even as he changes his mind, and let’s him die.
      C. Angry Gay Selfrightousness
So first of all I think we can agree that Kazuaki is a little more valid for going off the deep end here. But they both did have a similar experience in love. Both of them felt deeply betrayed by the boy they loved. Both of them were super pissed about this, and it shows in their supervillain plans. Neither of the are directly setting out to get revenge, but their desire is written all over their actions.
With Dirk, he spends an inordanent amount of time calling Jake stupid while he is posing as the narrator, as well as inserting thoughts about himself into Jake’s mind when he’s about to have sex with Jane. (He’s also just weirdly horny the whole epilogue, in general.) After driving Jake to do his public confession in the Meat timeline, Dirk responds with “And to love Dirk is to obey him” in the narration. And finally, right before he’s about to fuck of to space Dirk plans this epic confrontation that ends with the quote that heads this section.
As for Kazuaki, the whole way he was able to become the King was because of the trauma that Hitori put him through, namely the killing him part. He absorbed people because of not wanting to be left alone again. And once Hitori enters the dream he turns all his focus onto him, blinding him and forcing him into a small pocket of the dream so he can’t hurt anyone again. And even after he is defeated he still reaches out and tries to grab Hitori.
Even when the two of them try to move on, they can’t.
IV. “All Will Become One With the King” - Narrative Takeovers and the Hivemind
In order for there to be a narrative takeover, there has to be a narrative in the first place. And both Homestuck and Hatoful Boyfriend certainly have one, and I don’t mean in the sense that they are a story that we consume. I mean that there is a narrative thread that the characters themselves are aware of.
      A. Homestuck “Canon”
Let’s start with Homestuck, which in the Epilogues actually brought the term “canon” into the vocabulary of the characters via one Rose Lalonde. As a Seer and fanfiction writer, it makes sense she would be familiar with it. In the epilogues she discovered that there was something wrong with the timeline they were in - it was “non-canon”. This is different from the timeline being doomed, although it is similar. In both cases it means the timeline in question is fading away.
As defined by Rose, in order for a timeline to be canon, it has to be three things: 1. It has to be true, 2. It has to be essential, and 3. It has to be relevant. True as in true, essential as in essential to the characters or the story, and relevant as in relevant to the audience. Knowledge of the idea of canon seems to come along with ascending to the Ultimate Self, since the only people who know about it are Rose, Dirk, and Alt!Calliope.
Once Dirk ascends and realizes that the timeline they’re in is “non-canon”, he seizes control of the narrative in order to steer it back to canon and stop it from fading away. And once he takes control, he gains the same knowledge that the author would have of all the characters (except for Roxy because of his voidy-ness). He also wants to make everyone else ascend to their Ultimate Selves as well, and then take away their agency. How this worked is that he believes that their bodies wouldn’t be able to handle ascending (even though his did) and he makes them robot bodies because he’s just so nice. And the first people he assimilates are Rose and Dave, his children. And also as I said above, he inserted thoughts into people's heads and made them do things they wouldn’t normally do.
And Dirk taking control of the narrative isn’t an isolated incident, either. The narration has been passed around like a basketball, or more accurately stolen like loose change by a clumsy pickpocket. For the most part it is regulated to the cherubs - Caliborn and Calliope, as well as Doc Scratch - and Andrew Hussie. And that’s not even to mention all the people that give commands to the characters. The fabric of the text is very present in Homestuck.
      B. The All Knowing Eyes of the King
The King also tries to take control of the narrative as well, although not in the same way as Dirk. He isn’t aware of the fact that he is in a story in the same way. However, by trying to bring the whole cast into his hive mind he is essentially taking control of the narrative, since whoever controls the characters controls the story. He can’t full on insert thoughts into people’s heads like Dirk, but he can know the secrets of the people in the Holiday Star, similar to Dirk gaining the knowledge of the author. Then he uses a person’s deepest fear to convince them that the world outside is too scary, too dangerous, and it is safer to stay with him. Plus he uses creepy picture books to do it, which is certainly an aesthetic choice.
Two of the best examples of this is how he deals with Shuu and Yuuya. In Shuu’s case, it’s his most effective argument for staying on the Holiday Star - possibly because it is so similar to his own. Shuu was in love with a (married) colleague of his, but never told him, even as he passed away. Being as this was the only person Shuu cared about, he fell into a depression and also started murdering people. The King convinced him that there was nothing more in the real world that he could find a use for - that it would be better if he stayed here, where he could experiment and research forever. It worked so well that it took the ghost of his love to shake him out of it.
On the opposite side of this we have Yuuya. Yuuya was not actually supposed to be on the Holiday Star, but he dove in (basically) in order to save his little brother. And The King probably had the best chance of blackmailing him, because Yuuya has done some shit - including the murder of his infant half-brother. He did this in order to help his little brother, but still, jeez. The King uses this to convince him that he’s a bad person, that he would be better off in the Star, where his guilt couldn’t hurt him anymore. This doesn’t work, mainly because Yuuya is a more emotionally mature person that the King. He refused to be converted, because all the bad things he’s done has made him the person he is today, and to get rid of that would be irresponsible. His whole speech ends with this truly phenomenal quote: “It’s my grief. And you can’t have it.”
      V. Conclusion
So, what have I learned from this? Um, don’t trust gay men I guess. And also that mental illness and suicide is a very serious thing. I feel that with this essay I have run into the problem that my professors have told me numerous times - I can identify an interesting point, but I have trouble drawing meaning from this. So if any of you can figure out what this connection means, please let me know! Mostly to me it seems like there are definite links between my favorite stories, and it’s that giving in to despair is not the answer.
VI. Miscellaneous: The Meta of HB - Hiyoko as the Narrator
Hatoful Boyfriend is not quite as meta as Homestuck - nothing really is. But it isn’t the benchmark of weirdness for dating games for nothing. And most of this weirdness revolves around Hiyoko, which makes sense. She is the narrator after all - and I don’t just mean that in the normal story sense. I mean that in the Homestuck sense as well.
Hiyoko is aware of the fact that she is in a game. She makes references to her stats, and is aware of the interface of the screen. She also doesn’t know the name of the town she’s lived in all her life until someone else says it in Holiday Star, because it was never established in the first game. She is also aware of alternate universes of each romance route. Because Hiyoko dies. A lot. She dies in Shuu’s route, in the neutral route, and in the true route. And in Holiday Star (which in it of itself is an alternate universe to the main game) she meets Death and is able to recognize him from all the other times she’s died.
The important thing to get from all this is that unlike Some People, Hiyoko never goes crazy from this fact. She’s in a game, and she knows it, and she’s cool with it. It should probably be pointed out that Hiyoko is dumb as a box of rocks, and with ignorance comes bliss, they say. But still, it is interesting to see an example of a character with meta knowledge who manages to deal with it, instead of going full supervillain.
