Comoedia, 5 February 1934 (note the picture of Harry Baur by the masthead!) So I learned that the 1934 Les Mis film premiered two nights before a far-right anti-government riot! And you can feel that there was a crisis about to happen in this account of the movie's premiere:
A rough start to the night: there’s the taxi driver’s strike and there’s the parliamentary crisis. The latest information passed from mouth to mouth and most journalists arrived late, bearing the most recent news. “So Emile Fabre is jumping ship?” [Fabre was the director of the Comédie-Française and was apparently being pressured to leave.] “It’s a scandal!” “It’s disgraceful!” “What folly!” “And who is replacing him?” “George Thomé.” [Thomé was a musician as well as the former director the Sûreté.] “Seriously?! They’re going to be cuffing the Comedie-Francaise.” Emile Fabre makes his entrance, followed by his charming daughter. He is just as soon surrounded and interrogated. “I don’t understand! I don’t understand!” “No one understands.” “There is too much to understand.” Our editor-in-chief, who has not always been fond of Emile Fabre, is spotted by his side; he shakes his hand cordially and I note that Pierre Lazareff [editor-in-chief of Paris-Soir] notes this effusive sympathy. A political star enters!...M. [François] Piétri [briefly the Minister of Finance]…thoughtfully and hurriedly, he passes by on swift feet which recently exercised a wise retreat that was, if I dare say, a step ahead of wisdom. He joins Mme. Piétri….It’s impossible to get him to open up!... Caught up in the commotion of the crowd, I hear this brief dialog between a political columnist and a deputy: “And how are your ‘misérables’ doing?” “They are waiting for their Monseigneur Myriel!” The huge Marignan theater is too cramped for this crowd of guests. Luckily Jean-José Frappa and his second in command, Mme. Audibert, thought of everything, took care of everything… And everyone is able to get to the coat check and find his place easily. Because the taxi strike and political events delayed hundreds of people, who then arrived all at once and with haste, this was not an easy task. Who was there? Tout-Paris...I randomly noted with my pencil: Messueirs Paul Abram, Achard, De Adler, Berneuil, Archimbaud, André Aron, Arnaud, Louis Aubert, Aubin, Kujay, Kertée, Azaïs, Bacré, Barthe, Baschet, Baudelocque, Harry-Baur, Bavelier, Robert de Beauplan, Antonin Bédier, Pierre Benoit, Mme Spinelly, Charles Delac and Marcel Vandal, Léon Benoit-Deutsch, André Lang, René Lehmann, Bellanger, Mag Bernard, Tristan Bernard, Jean-Jacques Bernard, Louis Bernard, Dr. Etiënne Bernard (all the Bernards!)...Bernheim, Bernier, Guilaume Besnard, Bétove, Bizet, Blumsteien, Mme Rocher, Boesflug, Pierre de la Boissière, Bollaert, Bouan, Boucher, Robert Bos, Pierre Bost, Paul Brach, Henry Roussell, Charles Burguet, Pierre Brisson, Simone Cerdan, Henry Clerc, Albert Clemenceau, Pière Colombier, Germaine Dulac,Henri Diamant-Berger, Julien Duvivier,Jean Epstein, Fernand Gregh, Mary Glory, René Heribel, Tania Fédor, Alice Field, Jacqueline Francell, Mary Marquet, Florelle, Marguerite Moreno, Françoise Rosay, Becq de Fouquière, Jean Servais, Vidalin, Maria Vaisamaki, Orane Demazis, Rachel Deviry, Rosine Deréan, Jacques Deval, Christiane Delyne, Renée Devillers, Jean Chataigner, Germaine Dermoz, Léon Voltera, Robert Trébor, our director, Jean Laffray, Lucie Derain, Paul Gordeaux, Jean Narguet, Parlay, Suzet Maïs, Antoine Rasimi, Renée de Saint-Cyr, Jean Toulout, Mady Berry, Yolande Laffont, Jean Max, Parysis, Charles Gallo, Léo Poldès, Jean Fayard, Edmonde Guy, Mario Roustan, Paul Strauss, Cavillon, Emile Vuillermoz, Josselyne Gaël, Charles Vanel, S. E. Si Kaddour ben Gabhrit, the duke and duchess of Mortemart, Madame Henry Paté, Marcel Prévost, Louise Weiss, Alfred Savoir, Henri Duvernois, Paul Gémon, magistrate Maurice Garçon, magistrate Campinchi, Sylvette Fillâcier, Jean Heuzé, Pierre, Heuzé, Mona Goya, Simon-Cerf, W.E. Hœndeler, Georges Midlarsky, Michel, Nadine Picard….and others I must be forgetting…pardon me!....Silence!....
In the glow of the half-light from the screen….there are applause! Not since les Croix de bois has a movie been so highly anticipated and now it is time for the verdict….Raymond Bernard can be sure that the audience is rooting for him. Our eyes are full with light and pretty colors. This Paris night is practically magical…and departing from that magic, we are plunged into the great river of les Misérables, into the furious waters of this social storm. Luckily André Lang and Raymond Bernard have made the trip for us. What contrast! From the spectacle of an elegant and distinguished gathering, we move to the misfortunes of Jean Valjean.
The audience picks up on everything that could be an allusion to the present times. But of all these allusions, one stands out. It’s the lament of two gossips, at the moment when the barricades are rising. “What sad times!” “We’ve barely made it through the cholera…and here is the Republic!” Thunderous applause and mad laughter. When, on the barricades, the Republic calls on us to act, the spectators think of other promised actions which haven’t happened and they forget to applaud. But the whole audience is prodigiously virtuous; whenever a good deed is shown on the screen, when some sentence about the heart graces the white canvas, it is punctuated by applause. After the first film, stop!... Time to eat! There’s a mad dash to the punchbowl. In the haste of this day of crisis and running late, many in the audience did not have time for dinner….the buffet, in the blink of an eye, is emptied and the dry drinks make vindictive and impassioned discussions flow. High and low, here and there, everyone was speaking of the Parliment's chances and the intermission bell sounds in an atmosphere charged with electricity. The two other parts of the film, cut by another intermission, each end with a double ovation for Harry Baur, both in the lobby and in the theater. The little Gaby Triquet is passed from person to person towards a chocolate eclair, which she leaves a trace of on the cheeks of Harry Baur. And then as usual everyone rushes to the coat check. Then we go to the fifth floor of the Marignan building. There, in an unoccupied apartment, dinner waits for us. There are more than a thousand of us around little eight-person tables. Ten thousand meters of film, that will make you hungry! Three orchestras pour out waltzes, tangos, and other tunes, while the masters of the hotel fill up our cups. And that continued to six thirty in the morning, in an atmosphere of charming cordiality as each person attested to the pleasure of seeing French cinema accomplish such a feat. Bernard Natan and Raymond Bernard were too surrounded for me to speak to them. Besides, what could I say to them that they haven’t already heard ten times, a hundred times, a thousand times that evening, which was the apotheosis of cinema and of Les Misérables. -Jean-Pierre Liausu

Cela suffit.

Quote
The French court, itself very Italianized during the second half of the sixteenth century, was often attacked: moralists confused bodily refinement and debauchery...The French did not yet understand that there was nothing licentious about perfume in Italian society. In his 'Dialogo di pittura' (mid-sixteenth century), Paolo Pino advised the painter, social type in evolution who, through simple manual labor, became an artist, to care for his external appearance in order to frequent good company: 'He should be delicate and proper, he should use perfumes that comfort the mind. He should wear clothing of a good cut, but also of a certain gravitas. It also suits him to be witty in conversation and in his reasoning, with the aim of conforming to the profession and the nature of those with whom he speaks.' In this the French saw a penchant for effeminacy--a word that instantly evoked the accusation of deviant morals--the Italian saw only concern for the body that made relationships more agreeable and showed respect for others. This mentality seemingly not reigning over the notables of Lyon, the installation of a boutique in the Place du Change of the Venetian perfumer Jean Gasparin, must have scandalized them. The Place du Change was the center of business, not of frivolity.

Hey friends!
I've had this HC about my beloved Pilot™️ forever a while, dying for someone to ask, as if anyone would ever think of asking something like that, until I realised it's my blog and I can post it if I please! And it gives me immense pleasure to do so (I don't need much...)
So here's a peek at what my Frankie's high school locker looked like 😍
They're his role models. The man really looks up to a strong headed, driven female aeronautical pioneer, flying against all odds...

Life on a cult TV show - Paul Darrow on “Blake’s 7” scripts, squabbles and laughs
Life on a cult TV show – Paul Darrow on “Blake’s 7” scripts, squabbles and laughs
Yesterday’s blog was the first part of a 1980 interview with actor Paul Darrow, whose death was announced this week.
In August 1980, I interviewed him for Marvel Comics’ Starburst magazine. He was then known for starring as Avon in Terry Nation’s peaktime BBC TV science fantasy series Blake’s 7.
Yesterday, he talked about how an actor can turn a villain into a hero.
In this second extract, he…

I did realise that earlier on in first two seasons b7 writers were not exactly writing Servalan in a gender stereotypical tone, her haircut, her dresses, her attitude--- everything was not conventional. Revisiting DS9, I recalled what Nana once said in the DS9 documentary that the role of Kira was written in a tone that they would usually give to a man--- Jacqueline said the similar things in an interview.
Chris Boucher didn't think Servalan had a depth but I believe that's what he thought of later Servalan on her evil motives--- purely characterwise. Earlier Servalan, the rising Servalan is a politician role that usually would be given to a man at this stage of history.
#My favourite in ds9 are kira and sisko#Not that I don't like garak I love all of them but sisko is an unconventional African American character and Kira is an unconventional woman

Thank you to everyone who helped Team Brown (Trench)Coats complete 204 tasks in a week!
One can only play GISH with the help of family, friends, and kind strangers! We are grateful to everyone who joined in on a challenge, helped us locate an obscure item, helped us brainstorm how to find something, joined us in large group endeavours like the “I Will Vote” challenge, and generally took time to help us meet our crazy goal of completing as many challenges as we possibly could (and doing them well)!
When you look through our gallery of photos and images, please remember that it took at least a village to get these done!

This is the loosely based on facts story of Carla Moran, a woman who was allegedly tormented and sexually molested by an invisible demon. Regardless of if the facts of the case are fictionalised for impact, or if indeed there is any basis of truth to the attacks in question, The Entity as a film fails to rise above average due to sloppy direction and a very poor script, whilst the score from Charles Bernstein is akin to being hit over the head repeatedly with a blunt instrument. That said, the film isn’t a total wash out, there are genuine moments of dread in the piece, and most of the tension and fear is realised from a very credible performance from Barbara Hershey as Carla. The nature of the beast with this type of picture will always be open to either scoffing or a fear of the unknown, so to get the audience involved with a topic like this you really need your protagonist to be believable, Hershey manages to do this in spite of the character bei...

A Masterlist of Underused French Names
So as a French person, I grew a little bit tired of seeing the same old French names over and over again. So under the cut is a list of 260 (185 first names and 105 surnames) underused French names, based on my experience, with the bolded ones being my favorites! And now don’t get me wrong, many of those names are not strictly French, and are in other languages too. But just know they are used in French too, so they can be used for your French character if needed. And there are obviously a lot of other names you can go for!

Quote
At the same time as bodily hygiene, Italy taught politeness, in particular good manners at the table and in society in general. In 1598, the printing-house of Jean de Tournes edited a booklet of etiquette, 'Le Galatée, premièrement composée en italien par I. de la Case, depuis mis en François, Latin et Espagnol par divers auteurs' [Galateo, first composed in Italian by Giovanni della Casa and since translated into French, Latin, and Spanish by diverse authors]. Casa opposed 'the gentle and courteous way of life' with what he called 'sour and rustic manners.' He gave advice that provided curious interpretations of what he named rustic manners: 'not sniffing one's food or drink, not presenting a glass from which one has already drank to someone else,' and much less 'not presenting to another a pear or other fruit from which one has already bitten.' Some conducted themselves at the table like pigs. They ate messily to the point of soiling the tablecloths, which became dirtier than their handkerchiefs. Casa also recommended not to clean one's nails in public, to avoid unbecoming gestures like poking, and not to sit or stand too close when talking to others...That this booklet was edited in Lyon reveals the Italian presence in the city. We can use these small means to learn whether this advice for better behavior in public--particularly at the table--was better respected in Lyon by the Italians than by the French. Forks were used inside the homes of booksellers originating on the Peninsula. Luxembourg de Gabiano listed two dozen each of silver forks and spoons from his house on the Rue Mercière in his will. Thirty years later in 1588, a bookseller from Lucca, Paolo Bianchi, used several silver objects, including six spoons and six forks, to pay back a master hosier to whom he owed 30 écus. Certainly these forks were not very numerous, but members of the court did not use them any more often, despite their higher rank. In courtiers' inventories, forks are either present in very small numbers or absent. Montaigne noted that he ate with his fingers. Henri III and his close entourage were ridiculed because they used forks at the table. If the great merchants of Lyon used this object at the table, mockery at their expense was probably frequent.
