The GBA port is my favorite because of the extra content- Kain's final dungeon being a sort of "CSI: Baron" scenario and Edge being so delighted by his goofy obstacle course stuck with me.
But back in the late 90s/early 2000s, there was a fan translation patch for the FFIV rom by a translation group called J2E, which was my first experience with the Japanese version of the game. And in my heart of hearts I will always love that version the best, even though it took some extreme liberties with the translation in some places.
#ffiv#i did love the DS remake#but in some ways my expectations were too high#nothing can ever recapture the feeling of being six years old watching my older brothers play Final Fantasy II#or being twelve and actually getting to play the game myself for the first time#hard to overstate the formative influence this had on me tbh#anyway in the Tower of Zot the J2E translation had Kain saying something like “I'll prove I'm better than your boytoy Cecil”#and to this day this still makes me laugh#i think palom also says fuck at least once

what is your general recommended version of FFIV in this modern day? (I heard there was one version with voice acting which can be cool if done well)
Unfortunately, I don't have a simple answer for this. I think I own five versions of this game and they all have pros and cons:
(I'm talking about the North American versions of all of these, for clarity)
SNES (i.e. "Final Fantasy II") : some gameplay elements were eliminated or simplified and the translation is pretty stilted for both space and censorship reasons. I don't really recommend playing this version today, but it was good enough that many people who played it at the time have fond feelings for it and the bard has been spoony ever since.
PS1, GBA, PSP, and Pixel Remaster: The PS1 version is the one I played first and is probably the closest to the original, unadulterated intent of the game that you're going to find in English on an official release. The translation is decent but not great and every 2D, English script of the game going forward is based on the PS1 version, which means some mistakes and oddities are duplicated and/or amplified. This guy is a professional translator and goes into really exhaustive detail on it and some other interesting stuff regarding FFIV. Gameplay is more or less identical across all these versions. I don't feel like you would really go wrong playing any of these versions. So to extent I have a real recommendation here, it's "whichever one of these is most convenient for you." I like the original, chunky early 16bit graphics and those are only fully retained in the PS1 version, but I also really like the look of the PSP version. Pixel remaster has an updated/extended soundtrack that is pretty nice.
3DS, iOS/Android, Steam (2014) versions : These are all the 3D remake. I have mixed feelings about these. On the one hand the voice acting is pretty good and there's a freshly translated script. On the other hand, they wrote it on a very flowery ~*High Fantasy*~ style which imo is sometimes overwrought and amateurish. Combined with the voice acting this can be a turn off, depending on your tolerance for, um, theater. It also plays like a whole different game with some new mechanics and is more difficult than the original game, which is already one of the harder FFs, imo. Also, I'm not a big fan of the look of the 3D graphics. Washed out bobbleheads. Overall, I prefer the 2D versions, but there's some ideas I've retained from this version (Kain has a really deep voice, "eidolons")
Fan translations: I've played the J2E version, which was pretty popular for a a while, and IIRC was available before the PS1 version so it was briefly the best you were going to get in English. It varies from "pretty good" to "written by an edgy teenager who thinks they're funny." It also makes up a few things out of whole cloth that have lingered in the fandom. Kain/Barbariccia, anyone? There are probably other, better fan translations out there now, and that might be the way to go if you want something close to the original experience but with a decent script. But I couldn't recommend or vouch for a specific one.

oh boy i know i already posted this but turns out it's another case of the fan translation J2E trying to do something cool with kain and just?? muddying the waters further?
kain isn't waiting for his father's spirit to forgive him, they added that. BUT it makes sense thematically to be on mt ordeals and praying to your ancestors as well as forgiveness. i think that's what they're going for? it just makes it sound like kain is worried he's being haunted by his old man which he's not
セシル・・・・ローザ・・・・今の俺には、お前たちを祝福することは出来ん・・・・
この試練の山で技を磨き・・・・父を超える竜騎士となった時には、バロンに・・・・戻れそうな気がする・・・・それまでは・・・・
[rough] cecil - rosa - now as for me, i can't be apart of your celebrations - improving my spear on this mountain trial - the time when i have become a dragon knight to surpass father, to baron - i feel i can return - until then
Kain stands atop Mt. Ordeals, alone with the gobs of blonde hair he was hiding under his dragon helmet, refusing the invitation to Cecil and Rosa’s wedding/coronation.
Cecil may have forgiven Kain, but Kain hasn’t yet forgiven himself.

It's our 3rd anniversary as a couple!
I can't believe it! 3 years has already passed by since Luthier and I confessed to each other and became a couple! We've only grown stronger together, not just as individuals, but as a couple.
It's such a wonderful thing to be your partner, Luthier. You make me feel joy, confidence, calmness, security, the whole package that comes with having a soulmate. I love you, forever and always! Never stop being your kind, eccentric, and incredibly studious self. 💕
Now, please don't break anything with that Excalibur spell of yours, mister!
One more thing, the reason why I used his Gaiden arts was because it references this old Fire Emblem Gaiden patch, dated exactly 23 years ago (credit to J2e and his forum):
Basically, in the olden days, when English patches for the game were new, Gaiden had a bug that would make the game crash whenever the player opened up a spell list for a mage who had spells with longer names like Excalibur or Ragnarok. The mages would become unplayable in the player phase because of that, and that includes my darling Luthier because he starts with Excalibur. But the patch described in the picture above fixed this nasty glitch, so now my love is able to use his signature spell whenever he pleases!

the older fan translation J2E is pretty inaccurate but great fun if you've already played FFIV and want to read a punched-up stupid sweary sexualized version
it really swings for the fences and unfortunately misses a lot of kain's character beats. for this ending scene, it has kain say "Cecil, forgive him as you did me," which imo falls flat. too obvious. too preachy. too self-referential for kain.
the whole point of kain's uncertainty in the japanese is he is the last person who should lecture cecil but still cares deeply for him
Kain and Cecil are literal ride-or-die friends in the opening of FFIV and either that memory lasts the whooooole game in the player's head or the idea of (spoilers for a 30-year-old game) Cecil and Rosa forgiving Kain twice becomes laughable. What is so? Important? About Kain Highwind to you two?
But, in later translations there's a blink-and-you-miss it moment at the end when Golbez and Fusoya are about to disappear back into the moon to sleep, probably until long after the party is dead. Cecil's shutting down emotionally again. And the party all know that even if Cecil can't forgive Golbez, if Cecil doesn't say something, anything to Golbez, he's going to regret it forever.
But no one quite knows how to snap him out of it. Rydia, Edge, and Rosa all panic or play to expectations. He's your brother. You gotta forgive faaaamily.
Kain calmly says "Is this alright? Letting him go?" (DS)/"Are you certain you want to part this way?" (Pixel Remaster).
He's the only one that asks what Cecil wants.
And that's just. Good. Really good. What a good friend would do. There he is, a guy worth keeping around even when he fucks up spectacularly. This is the Kain who piped up immediately in Cecil's defense in the throne room, and when looking down at child Rydia in Mist cooly ran Cecil through the conundrum they faced and agreed it was wrong to kill a child, fuck it we're rebels. I liked it so much that when looking it up just now I was surprised this wasn't in the SNES. He just said "It's your last chance, Cecil!"
So I did what any good weeb who knows beginner to intermediate Japanese feeling guilty they haven't kept up studying would do and looked up the original line: "いいのか? 行かせて・・・・"
"いいのか?" is a pretty straight forward casual "is this alright?"
And "行かせて" is more like half an idea, so he's less declarative and a bit uncertain. 行 (to go) + かせ (causative form) + て (either linking or conditional te-form, I think conditional) = "if he's being made to go . . . " or "if you're letting him go . . . " The ambiguous subject/object and 'made to go' vs 'let him go' is because of Japanese grammar and context. Nobody is forcing Golbez to go, he decided to leave even before he realized Cecil is not forgiving him today. So it's the second meaning, "If you just let him go, then . . . " what will happen later, Cecil?
Which the DS translation nails, and smooths into a more natural English cadence for a friend leaning over and asking "you sure?"

Final Fantasy IV gets a new translation every 3 or 4 years, so which one is best? I list the pros and cons of each one here! 🍅
(Note that this is about *translations only* and not gameplay, so there's a LOT of info in here that isn't widely known and/or clears up longstanding myths)

That awkward moment when you’re basing a not-insignificant amount of character interpretation in a fic you’re writing on a line of dialogue that turns out to have been grossly mistranslated.
#la#why doesn't zexal have a single decent translation jfc#I'm usually pretty lenient with J2E translations because there's a lot of wiggle room for interpretation#and rewording things in a way that's more coherent in the target language#but this is not that#this is just straight up wrong
