T.-R. Enderby, vice-président, de Montréal; R.-A. Carter, secrétaire-trésorier; le capitaine H-I. Beauvals, le capitaine Léon Beaupré, J.-D. Calvin, P. Godin, fils; T. Siegerman, E. Spence et le capitaine T-W. Tinmouth, tous de Montréal. MM. A.-B. Buckworth et le capitaine James-B. Foote, de Toronto: le capitaine Scott Misener, de Port Colborne: J-J. Boland, E.-S.

Okay I know this one!!!!
Short summary:
The human brain has a reward system run by dopamine. When you do a thing like eating or sleeping or having sex, your reward system goes fuck yeah! Have some dopamine! Do that again! It's what programs you to do all the things that keep humans humaning.
Some substances and behaviours override the natural state of your reward system and give you a a huge rush of dopamine. So your body goes fuck yeah! Do that again! The survival system thought that was AWESOME.
If you keep doing that substance or behaviour, your brain starts thinking that's how much dopamine it's supposed to get from things, and if you stop doing it it thinks you've stopped performing a necessary human behaviour, and freaks the fuck out. If you do the substance or behaviour enough, or if its a particular type of substance, your brain can also lose some neurochemical receptors because it's so used to the substance providing that thing, and if you stop doing it there are more serious consequences (eg. Alcohol)
That's what addiction is. It's not some classist or ableist invention by doctors to stop you from getting your adhd meds (NOTE: IT CAN BE USED BY SOME DOCTORS FOR THIS PURPOSE BUT IS IN A VACUUM A NEUTRAL BIOLOGICAL STATE). ADHD meds are usually powerful stimulants that stimulate the reward part of your brain, and so absolutely fuck with this reward system.
The difference is just that people with ADHD don't have an effective reward system. We forget to eat, and sleep, or we overeat and oversleep, and hypersexuality is a common symptom. We take ADHD medication to regulate our reward systems, but not enough is understood about ADHD to safely say that it 100% protects you from the addicting effects, because that's straight up just a physiological process that's happening, and ADHD isn't so straight forward. There's a theory it's due to dopamine receptivity issues but we really don't know that much!
So guys, please. Yes, actually, you are functionally addicted to drinking water, and eating, and sleeping. That's the whole point of the system that facilitates addiction. And ADHD medication IS a dangerous and powerful drug when misprescribed or misused, and your doctor has a duty to inform you of these risks.
(This is Also the reason why pain medication is so tightly controlled. Opioids also target the reward system. But that is another rant for another day lmfao)

Jennifer Lopez’s Motown tribute on the Grammys: What was that insulting foolishness?
Sunday night’s performance was a slap in the face to history — in particular black women’s, who were the backbone of many of Motown’s greatest musical contributions.
Elizabeth Wellington
February 11, 2019
This is hard for me to write because when it comes right down to it, I’m a fan of Jennifer Lopez going back to her days as an In Living Color fly girl.
In fact, when it was announced earlier this month that J. Lo was going to lead the Grammy tribute to Motown, I defended the choice. Lopez, I surmised, had every right to honor the legendary Detroit record label’s 60th anniversary. It was the soundtrack of her youth, just like it was mine.
But the rest of the world — including my mom who lived through Motown’s heyday — wasn’t having it.
Now, I see why.
Sunday night’s performance was a slap in the face to history — in particular black women’s, who were the backbone of many of Motown’s greatest musical contributions. And I know the Grammy’s know better because Miley Cyrus’ rendition of “Jolene” with her godmother Dolly Parton for Parton’s own tribute was just the perfect touch. In contrast, Lopez in all of her J. Lo glory gyrated in wanna be Beyoncé style in several places where we all know she shouldn’t have. Berry Gordy’s Motown was all about showcasing black people’s decorum during an era when it was believed they didn’t have any, so this whole hot mama business was a total mess.
But that performance reeking of poor taste was just the beginning: Lopez’s voice faltered terribly in her tired rendition of Martha and the Vandellas’ “Dancing in the Street” and The Marvelettes’ "Mr. Postman.” When she erroneously channeled “Proud Mary” Tina Turner for her rendition of Barrett Strong’s chart topper, “Money (That’s What I Want),” I cringed. (Even though Gordy wrote “Money,” Turner was never on Motown. In fact she recorded that song with her husband, Ike, on Liberty Records in 1971 in direct competition with Motown.)
Lopez’s followed that foolishness up with The Contours’ “Do You Love Me (Now That I Can Dance)” and a snippet of the Jackson Five’s beloved “ABC” in booty shaking tackiness that was more Vegas revue rather than classy Motown choreography. I so wish that she had left The Temptation’s “Papa was a Rolling Stone" all the way alone. And if it wasn’t for Neyo standing in for Stevie Wonder on “Another Star” I think I may have jumped through my television and kicked her off the stage myself.
To quote Russell from Fat Albert, the entire performance was the epitome of N.C. — No class.
I’m not saying that J. Lo shouldn’t have been a part of the celebration, there was no doubt she was inspired by the music. Like Smokey Robinson said in his defense of the performance, Motown music was made for everyone. But we shouldn’t ignore that the label was created back in 1959 because white-owned record labels were slow to let black people record their music. Motown turned black women, like Diana Ross, into stars. Black women were seen as more than mammy’s and cleaning ladies. We were glamorous and sexy and well-dressed without being Venus Hottentots.
To completely leave out black women in this tribute — especially with Janelle Monae and Ella Mai, the British singer who won a Grammy for best R & B song Sunday night for her 2018 summer hit “Boo’d Up” were in the audience and Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson and Jill Scott presumably still breathing — the Grammys effectively erased black women from our own history. That was way beyond problematic. It was a stone cold mess.

"NO DECISION YET MADE," Daily British Whig (Kingston, Ont.). August 7, 1912. Page 5. --- AS TO WHAT PAVEMENT SHOULD BE USED ---- On the Five Downtown Blocks - The Board of Works is Now Inclined to Lay Creosoted Wood Blocks. ---- The nature of the pavement for the five blocks on Clarence, Wellington, Brock and Bagot streets is not decided upon yet. A meeting of the board of works was held on Tuesday after noon, but it has no recommendation to forward to council as yet, on account of some developments.
However, the board is favorably inclined to pave these blocks with creosoted wood blocks, generally acknowledged to be the best pavement in the market. The United States Wood Block company, the manufacturers, quoted a price, by telegram, owing to the short notice. It was $1.87 square yard for the blocks or $2.98 a square yard laid on the street. The quotation was somewhat indefinite, and it is not likely the $2.85 includes the curbing and extras. The engineer instructed to obtain the necessary information. The blocks ar three inches thick, and treated with a chemical which insures them against damage by water or frost. The road laid with such is guaranteed for seven years. These blocks have and are being laid in many of the heavy traffic streets in New York and Philadelphia, and this ought to be sufficient guarantee as to their wearing quality. At $2.98 a square yard, the price would be about $21.150 for the locks to be paved. The company suggests that the city do the work, under its superintendent.
John Mofiett, of Westrumite, limited, Brantford, explained the qualities and process of making of his Westramite pavement. This was the sheet pavement which is also under consideration. It is a mixture of Bermuda and Trinidad asphalt. Mr. Moffett spoke of the cooking of the mixture being by steam, stirring by compressed aid, and of being shipped in barrels to the scene of operations, where it is laid cold on the street. There is a five-inch foundation of cement and acetone. After it is finished it must set for four or five days. The Brantford company guarantees a street Iaid with Westrumite for five years, and it is estimated that its life is for ten to fifteen years, according to the traffic. The company also has a grade "B," which is adapted to heavier traffic. A number of the cities and towns in Western Ontario have streets laid with this pavement. The price tendered is $2.36 s square yard.
The Godson Contracting company, of Toronto, quoted prices on three grades of its retrobit sheet pavement. There were $1.25, and a square yard, with extras. Many of the streets in Toronto are laid with this pavement. The company has thirty-nine years experience in paving.
The Central Paving company, of Ottawa, also tendered a price of about $19,165 for the work. The company is at present doing a 300,000 con tract at Amherst, N.S., for the department of railways and canals.
The Barber Asphalt Paving company, of Montreal, and the Kocmac company, of Thorold, wrote, saying that, owing to the short notice given, they were unable to tender.
On the advice of the company supplying the Bermudez asphalt to be used in the paving of Barrie street, the board reconsidered the purchasing of a 100-gallon kettle, instead of a 150-gallon kettle for heating the material. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman and engineer.
Ald. Litton asked what progress was being made at the Barrie street road way. The engineer replied that it was being trimmed up, the scarifying would soon be done, and that what was holding the work back a little was the new roller and heating kettle to be purchased.
The pavement first considered and which tenders were received, was asphalt block, as laid last year. The quotation was $3.50 a square yard, said. K. J. Melelland, city engineer. declares that the city could do the work for 23.10 a square yard.
The members of the board present were Alds. Elliott (chairman), Couper, Peters, Litton, Fair and Harty.

This is a great post!! These types of reflections are what makes discussing musical pieces closely worth it for me... the balanced analysis you bring into the discussion makes me go 🥺!!!
A couple of responses: the Eb major and C major motifs in Wellingtons Sieg are lifted from the popular songs "Rule Britannia" and "Marlborough s'a va-t-en guerre" respectively, representing the British and French sides of the conflict. I can see why critics later dismissed Wellingtons Sieg as a hodgepodge of themes because Beethoven doesn't really modulate between them when introducing them—the trumpets/bugles just cut to the chase and assert their key! And with C being the major submediant of Eb, they're difficult to relate to each other (unless you modulate from EbMaj -> Cm -> CMaj). Maybe good ol' Beets chose these keys for their distance from each other to symbolise the irreconcibility of both sides... or am I reading too much into this.... (Also, as a certified part of the Brass Gang™, I laugh at the misfortune of those violins./j Okay maybe I sympathise a little... we've all sightread pieces during the performance and died at key changes/transpositions 😔)
Beethoven doesn't incorporate parts of the motifs into the B major/battle part of the piece either. And unfortunately, he doesn't really recapitulate the motifs, but he does insert "God Save the King" in the latter half/victory part of the symphony and spin a fun little fugue off of it to finish. It's like he was illustrating or mythologising historical events. We can debate about the superiority of Beethoven's absolute music all day, but this is undeniably a great example of a programmatic and thorough-composed piece.
As for the Eroica, I remember listening to the first movement a while ago and thinking just how well it builds up despite the abrupt start. I can't say I have much emotional attachment to it (yet), but I get why you describe it as a hug. The music does envelop you completely when Beets lets the brass thunder and the strings chug, and sometimes dynamic contrasts and frenzied part-writing—with some motivic subtlety!—is all it takes to make your day. It feels so rewarding you reach the music apex of the Eroica. Beethoven was definitely in Full Heroic mode there, even compared to Wellingtons Sieg, but especially the fragmentation of the late works. In his book Beethoven after Napoleon, Stephen Rumpf argued that Wellingtons Sieg was the gateway to Beethoven's late era, and I kind of see why, even though it wasn't completely convincing. The Ninth Symphony carries the same kind of pot-pourri approach of Wellingtons Sieg—but obviously a lot more refined. Late Beets is full of tonal whiplash and juxtaposition—the Grosse Fuge sounds like a full mental breakdown at parts. I should take the time to listen to the Eroica again, just to compare...
Thank you for taking the time to write such detailed musical analysis! And I wish you the best of luck for your exams! You can do this :)))
Comparing the intros to Eroica vs Wellingtons Sieg by Beethoven *fanboy screaming*
Inspired by @impetuous-impulse 's long-post essay on if Wellingtons Sieg was a certified banger or just liked because of its political ties. Very interesting, go read the post. Also literally don't worry about being socially awkward while interacting with me, my tumblr tag is literally diagnosed anxiety disorder, I understand if you get social anxiety in my notifs 😭
I'm going to put the post under a Keep reading so my mutuals don't get sieged with a wall of text on their dash ahaha
tldr: Wellingtons Sieg focuses more on imagery and takes a more cinematic/patriotic approach, sacrificing a bit of melodicism. While Eroica is very lyrical and musical, having a steady motif that it grows on, but I wouldn't know that it's about war if someone didn't tell me. Both pieces focus on different aspects of musicality and in their own domain, they perform quite well. I like Eroica more since it's more musical in my opinion, but Wellingtons Sieg is also really dramatic and cool. This is just my personal taste. I recommend listening to both and formulating your own opinion! Both pieces really do sound very Beethoven-esque though
ok coming at this from a musician's perspective and not a historical perspective (since there's plenty of you history buffs out there haha). I had to play a bit of Eroica for an orchestra audition and I just took the time to listening to a bit of Wellington's Victory and sight read the conductor's sheet music. I will now proceed to do a long post looking at the intros of Eroica and Wellingtons Sieg because I don't have the time to listen to both of them in their entirety right now
Just going to put it out there, Eroica and Wellingtons Sieg are both in Eb Major, which is practically known as the heroic key, but that's probably because of Beethoven. The only difference is that Wellingtons Sieg first starts in Eb, then goes to C major (bright and festive) then goes to B major (in this use it's similar in mood i think to C) and then it goes back to Eb.
First of all, I will tell you right now that I like Eroica more than Wellingtons Sieg. Not only am I biased but I've actually listened to Eroica in its entirety multiple times.
At the start of Wellingtons Sieg (after the dramatic snare drum and trumpet fanfare thingies) you have this nice cute little motif. The motif actually ends after the down beat in measure 8 but I wanted to include the crescendo poco a poco. Anyways, this is in Eb and it's backed up by a bunch of quarter note Eb's on the down beats as well. It's a simple melody and it kinda feels like a marching song honestly. During the whole crescendo part it kinda does a whole developmental twisty thingy with the motif and then lands on a forte and it ties it all together at the end with a small recapitulation of said motif. This whole intro just feels like the army marching into battle and whatnot.
Eb Major motif ^^^ I really like it! The staccatos and major key makes it feel very bouncy and lively
Then Beethoven decided that the army is not done marching actually and he's actually going to change the time signature entirely, giving the next upcoming C Major section an entirely different feel. In fact, an entirely different melodic motif, because it makes it ✨interesting✨. So after an even longer period of the snare drum going insane in a triplet-based time signature and then the trumpets follow up with their loud repeated notes since trumpets are good at doing that, then we have another motif!
C Major motif ^^^ (pretend like there's a quarter note C in the invisible measure 8, it was written on a different page so i had to cut off the resolution im sowwy) .
Similar to the first motif, it also has a light and bouncy feel with all the staccatos. The grace notes play a similar role as the 16th notes in the Eb motif as well. I mean, C is the 6th of the Eb major key, but I don't know enough music theory to know the significance of that :/ (im taking AP music theory next year though!!!). So this motif repeats itself a bunch of times in different modulations in 3rds (i think) while the violins either do nothing or echo the melody. Very big focus on the band, especially brass probably.
And then... we get into the part that is probably when the army actually reaches the battlefield. Now, we have our two soldiers right, the Eb motif and the C motif. These two soldiers were obviously on the front lines and got brutally one-shot killed by artillery or something because in the B major section there is literally no motif at all!!
Ok, these two screenshots are 11 pages apart. Beethoven wanted to torture the violinists for a bit. He's literally doing what Wagner did for Ride of the Valkyries where he turns the violins into little Christmas ornaments and gives the brass section a field day. Moments like these are the reason why most of the violinists I know wish they picked the cello instead because wow look at all those juicy quarter notes and long notes ties, very chill. Also the second page that I screenshotted is when the key shifts from B major to Eb major. It's not written in the key signature but the accidentals suggest that the key is different because Beethoven wanted to make sure that no violinist was sight reading on the day of the concert, which is totally something I've never done before (haha... sorry maestro 💀)
I don't think you really need to read sheet music to understand what's going on. The winds are just holding long dramatic notes while the strings are having a stroke. This part of the piece is very cinematic and it very much sounds like the background music for a 1800s based war movie. A lot of times when pieces are based on.. uh... "things" they tend to ditch melodic lines for foley impressionistic sounds. There was this one concert I went to for my city's philharmonic orchestra and they played a piece based on Nazi Germany and they literally used two metronomes that were going off asynchronously as apart of the piece. I mean, the piece was very 1900s modern so... but that's the only example that's at the top of my mind right now.
What I'm trying to say is that there's no melody. Or at least there's no clear lyricism or melodic line that you can pinpoint, or there's no sense of melodicism that I can find with my mediocre knowledge of music theory and composition.
Overall, the intro of Wellingtons Sieg is very cinematic, in its sense that the musical lines paint a picture of the army marching to battle and then roughhousing it on the front lines in the section I just talked about. I really liked the motifs at the beginning, I hope Beethoven recapitulates on them at the end of the piece :(
Alright onto Eroica– I love how it just jumps just straight into the theme after the grandiose entrance. I love the intro to this piece so much, the cellos have such a beautiful rich tone with the arpeggiated Eb 2nd inversion chord while the strings just have a bubbly metronomic portato touch, it's so satisfying. Then when the violin I's take over with the G to Ab dotted quarter notes and how it just leads into the next phrase. Then the end of the first motif is on the same beat as the repeat of said motif but the woodwinds play it instead, contrasting from the deep cello sound to a more free and gentle tone it's really beautiful.
Just listen to the Berlin Philharmoniker play it, they do such a good job with the phrasing and musicality. The Berlin Phil is one of if not the best orchestras out there in my opinion. Each section is so in time with each other it just sounds like a one person powerhouse from each instrument. I wish I can play in an orchestra even a fraction as well-refined as them one day. Nothing wrong with my school's orchestra, it's just aaaa Berlin Phil <333
I don't know where this happens in the sheet music, but after some developmental stuff building off of the Eb major chord motif that is juggled between the sections, the strings lead up to a tremolo-d Eb note and then the brass takes over and plays the Eb chord motif. It's so grandiose and probably sounds amazing live.
The melodic line moved from a soft but rich tone from the cellos to a calm interjection from the violins, sounding like a sigh that is carried on by the woodwinds. The woodwinds take their own artistic spin on the melody as the violins gradually crescendo in anticipation to the climax of the exposition. At the peak of the phrase, the brass section majestically explodes and sound goes everywhere and it's just... Beethoven. The piece feels like a really nice hug
With that being said, I kind of focused on two different things for the two pieces. Wellingtons Sieg tells a story through its music while Eroica is more melody based. Wellingtons Sieg does a great job on portraying a certain patriotic feel through its use of percussion and the brass section. It gets its point across that it is about a heroic war victory, listening to the piece is like watching the battle unfold in front of you. While Eroica, ah Eroica... it's majestic in itself. I don't know how else to describe it other than it really sounds like Beethoven. The way he stamps the epic Eb major motif all over the place and plays with the notes, always making it interesting, it's so nice to listen to.
These two symphonies are both musical in their own way. I believe these two symphonies were written roughly a decade apart, so a lot could've happened to Beethoven personally to influence how he sounds. Wellingtons Sieg definitely has its patriotic zeal thoroughly seasoned across the score while Beethoven's heart bled out on the pages of Eroica.
They're both beautiful in their own special Beethoven-esque way. I'm not historically educated enough to tell you what the audience of the time would prefer but what I think is the most important is to know your own opinion. Like how you don't read a book, the book reads you, music is interpreted differently for every pair of ears, or singular ear (not discriminating van Gogh). Music is for everyone, but at the same time, not for everyone. No matter the political introjections or emotional ties, art will always be art and will be seen differently by any audience. I think it's more important to just experience the music for yourself and figure out what you like.
Alright, this post is long enough. I'm not familiar with making long posts so I have no idea if I did this correctly ._. Thank you for reading this in its entirety if you did, I really appreciate it!
All this talk about Beethoven is making me want to relearn the Beethoven Sonatas I was working on on the piano and violin. Anyways, I gotta study for one of my final exams that is... uh... tomorrow.. and I totally studied for it hahaa.. ha... ... please wish me luck, I need it
ok, I'll shut up now, 再见
The End !

The Vickers Wellington was a British twin-engine, long range medium bomber designed in the mid-1930s at Brooklands in Weybridge, Surrey, by Vickers-Armstrongs' Chief Designer, R. K. Pierson. It was widely used as a night bomber in the early years of the Second World War, before being displaced as a bomber by the larger four-engine "heavies" such as the Avro Lancaster. The Wellington continued to serve throughout the war in other duties, particularly as an anti-submarine aircraft. It was the only British bomber to be produced for the entire duration of the war. The Wellington was popularly known as the Wimpy by service personnel, after J. Wellington Wimpy from the Popeye cartoons and a Wellington "B for Bertie" had a starring role in the 1942 Oscar-nominated Powell and Pressburger film One of Our Aircraft Is Missing. The Wellington was one of two bombers named after Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, the other being the Vickers Wellesley.

K: A is a hopeless romantic who has always dreamed of meeting their soulmate. Unfortunately their remote location means they see the same few people every day, none of whom is their match. When Character B arrives and A falls in love with them, the question arises: are they soulmates? Or does A just want them to be?
L: Food is love, and supposedly your soulmate's cooking will taste better than anything you've ever eaten before. Too bad Character A is hopeless in the kitchen. M: Characters A and B are working together on a yacht. They share a room, and as crew they also happen to share most of their working hours and duties as well. Is that the reason they're so drawn to one another? Regardless of their connection, they're both determined to keep it professional.
N: It's not only humans who have soulmates, apparently. At least if the pet psychic Character A has consulted about their dog's depression is to be believed. The psychic claims the pup met his soulmate at doggie daycare. Now A is trying to see if she's right by seeking out every possible dog from the playgroup. Will helping a dog find it's soulmate lead Character A to the same thing?
O: Hybrids aren't accepted many places, but in a few countries they have full rights and equality, even if prejudice still exists. Character A was raised in an anti-hybrid country and is now studying/working in a hybrid friendly place. Character B is the hybrid neighbor who they feel drawn to in ways they've heard are typical of soulmates. The possibility is as frightening as it is enticing.
P: Nontraditonal ABO: it's generally accepted doctrine that alphas and omegas are made to go together. Character A has always been attracted to people of their own secondary gender, and has therefore run away from the concept of finding a soulmate. They start from different cities in and meet in the second/third country they’re visiting. They get along quickly and have a one night stand because they think they won’t meet again. All their coworkers think they are similar and would make an amazing couple so they try to get them together. Most people don’t believe in soulmates anymore, they think it was a legend or maybe it’s not a legend and they’re soulmates?
X: Untraditional soulmates !! For example, a pairing (or poly) comprised of people who aren’t soulmates but are in love anyway. Maybe their “true” soulmates died or just didn’t work out for some reason. Maybe their “true” soulmates are platonic and separate from the romantic relationship. But ultimately the theme being something like “i am choosing to love this person” rather than the world telling them who to love :)
Y: Character A is a writer who pours their heart and soul into everything they write, though their focus on the soulmate trope is underappreciated. When they realize they're different, nobody can explain the reason. It isn't until they meet Character B, a stranger with the same affliction, that they begin to put things together. Or: A and B hear one another's cries as babies, changing their vision from black and white to color before they could possibly have realized it.
AA: Characters A & B somehow keep running into each other inexplicably all over the world. Maybe they happen to study abroad together then have a work conference in the same city then vacation in the same city, etc. Eventually they realize they've been seeing each other all over and maybe the universe is trying to tell them something.

When Person B finds out that Person A cut their string they’re so angry because they know how devastated they were to find their cut string. And Person A is confused at first because they thought Person B didn’t believe in soulmates either and didn’t realize that it was because they had no way of finding their soulmate. And then it hits Person A that there might be a slight chance that Person B IS their soulmate. So they nervously show up with their string and ask if Person A wants to see if the ends fuse together or not. Up to writer if the ends fuse or not.
