"NO DECISION YET MADE," Daily British Whig (Kingston, Ont.). August 7, 1912. Page 5. --- AS TO WHAT PAVEMENT SHOULD BE USED ---- On the Five Downtown Blocks - The Board of Works is Now Inclined to Lay Creosoted Wood Blocks. ---- The nature of the pavement for the five blocks on Clarence, Wellington, Brock and Bagot streets is not decided upon yet. A meeting of the board of works was held on Tuesday after noon, but it has no recommendation to forward to council as yet, on account of some developments.
However, the board is favorably inclined to pave these blocks with creosoted wood blocks, generally acknowledged to be the best pavement in the market. The United States Wood Block company, the manufacturers, quoted a price, by telegram, owing to the short notice. It was $1.87 square yard for the blocks or $2.98 a square yard laid on the street. The quotation was somewhat indefinite, and it is not likely the $2.85 includes the curbing and extras. The engineer instructed to obtain the necessary information. The blocks ar three inches thick, and treated with a chemical which insures them against damage by water or frost. The road laid with such is guaranteed for seven years. These blocks have and are being laid in many of the heavy traffic streets in New York and Philadelphia, and this ought to be sufficient guarantee as to their wearing quality. At $2.98 a square yard, the price would be about $21.150 for the locks to be paved. The company suggests that the city do the work, under its superintendent.
John Mofiett, of Westrumite, limited, Brantford, explained the qualities and process of making of his Westramite pavement. This was the sheet pavement which is also under consideration. It is a mixture of Bermuda and Trinidad asphalt. Mr. Moffett spoke of the cooking of the mixture being by steam, stirring by compressed aid, and of being shipped in barrels to the scene of operations, where it is laid cold on the street. There is a five-inch foundation of cement and acetone. After it is finished it must set for four or five days. The Brantford company guarantees a street Iaid with Westrumite for five years, and it is estimated that its life is for ten to fifteen years, according to the traffic. The company also has a grade "B," which is adapted to heavier traffic. A number of the cities and towns in Western Ontario have streets laid with this pavement. The price tendered is $2.36 s square yard.
The Godson Contracting company, of Toronto, quoted prices on three grades of its retrobit sheet pavement. There were $1.25, and a square yard, with extras. Many of the streets in Toronto are laid with this pavement. The company has thirty-nine years experience in paving.
The Central Paving company, of Ottawa, also tendered a price of about $19,165 for the work. The company is at present doing a 300,000 con tract at Amherst, N.S., for the department of railways and canals.
The Barber Asphalt Paving company, of Montreal, and the Kocmac company, of Thorold, wrote, saying that, owing to the short notice given, they were unable to tender.
On the advice of the company supplying the Bermudez asphalt to be used in the paving of Barrie street, the board reconsidered the purchasing of a 100-gallon kettle, instead of a 150-gallon kettle for heating the material. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman and engineer.
Ald. Litton asked what progress was being made at the Barrie street road way. The engineer replied that it was being trimmed up, the scarifying would soon be done, and that what was holding the work back a little was the new roller and heating kettle to be purchased.
The pavement first considered and which tenders were received, was asphalt block, as laid last year. The quotation was $3.50 a square yard, said. K. J. Melelland, city engineer. declares that the city could do the work for 23.10 a square yard.
The members of the board present were Alds. Elliott (chairman), Couper, Peters, Litton, Fair and Harty.

sometimes I worry about how some of y’all react to any kind of technology. every site has an algorithm that’s how programming works. AI is a blanket term for a certain type of code, it’s not automatically evil. electric cars being made consumer available is a good thing even if the ceo of the first company to do so is a bit of a dick.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit against Asphalt Paving Systems on Sept. 26, alleging the company created a hostile environment for Black employees in Zephyrhills, Florida.
The EEOC alleges that Asphalt Paving Systems violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and 1991 by subjecting 12 Black now-former employees — Michael Cheaves, Anthony Clemons, David Cooper, Freddrick Cooper, Broderick Curney, Olusoga Davis, Kendall Gadson, Joseph Haynes, Alvin Matooram, Willie Moore III, David Whipper, and Jack Cornell Youmans to racial harassment in the workplace.
Tumblr media
The EEOC claim lays out a litany of allegations against APS, many of which are enumerated below.
According to the lawsuit, the employees were repeatedly called the “N-word” and “boy” by other employees and management. They were also subjected to demeaning working conditions, such as being forced to work in heavy rain while white employees watched. The Black employees were also forced to relieve themselves outside, while white employees were allowed to use the bathrooms indoors.
“Throughout the course of Charging Parties’ employment with APS, they were subjected to racial epithets and racially-charged verbal abuse from white supervisors and co-workers, threatening conduct by white supervisors and co-workers, and being forced to work in demeaning and humiliating working conditions,” the complaint says.
A white foreman named Anthony Buchholz was one of the supervisors who often used racial slurs to refer to Black employees, according to the EEOC.
“Buchholz would use the N-word frequently in front of Curney,” reads the lawsuit. “Curney objected to Buchholz’s use of the N-word directly, but Buchholz continued to use it. After Curney’s objections, Buchholz then came to a job site with a friend and yelled ‘I ain’t gonna ever run from a Black N—r’ at Curney.”
The lawsuit also noted that a foreman named Douglas Henry often called Black employees “boy” and that the company prevented a paving crew from finding other employment by calling a potential employer and telling them not to hire the men. The men were also called “Black boy,” “monkey,” and “Black motherf-cker” by Asphalt Paving System employees.
Supervisor Dennis Williams was overheard saying the Black paving crew “were looking like a bunch of monkeys,” and another employee, Mike Whitson, called Freddrick Cooper a monkey directly to his face “on a frequent basis.” Whitson also called the men “sissies” and “f—ggots” and referred to David Cooper as a “dumb N—r.”
The company’s mechanic, referred to in the lawsuit as “Jackie,” made comments to Black employees such as, “Black is beautiful, tan is grand, but white is the color of the big boss man” and that he was “Black from the waist down.”
By March 2022, every one of the Black employees had either resigned from APS or been fired.
EEOC Regional Attorney Robert E. Weisberg called the racial discrimination the employees faced “toxic.”
“The allegations in this case are deeply disturbing and illustrate the unfortunate reality that, 60 years after Title VII was enacted, toxic racial discrimination still plagues many workplaces in Florida,” said Weisberg. “The EEOC will continue to vigorously fight for the rights of Black employees and applicants to be free from workplace discrimination.”
The lawsuit asks Asphalt Paving Systems to “institute and carry out” policies, practices, and programs that provide Black employees with equal employment opportunities that “eradicate” their unlawful employment practices as well as provide the plaintiffs with compensation “in amounts to be determined at trial.”
The lawsuit also requests the plaintiffs be compensated for “the unlawful employment practices described herein, including emotional pain, suffering, inconvenience, loss of enjoyment of life, and humiliation,” as well as their legal costs.

came to the conclusion that the reason why aventio has such a strong hold on me these days is that they're the highest purest greatest dumbest form of "I have feelings for you" (that feeling was friendship, but neither had ever experienced it before) and I find that stupidly compelling atm
#i like that you can really start from scratch with them despite them already acting like they've been in a committed relationship for years#it's like yes these two characters go hand in hand sold in a pair do not separate#they're the only two people who have a high regard of each other and understand each other without words needed#the only ones who can stand spending prolonged periods of time in each others company and still seek each other out after#they're also still completely unaware that they have a positive opinion of each other#that they aren't a burden or an annoyance for each other#that the reason why they find so much ease in working with each other is that they're on the exact same wavelength#in ratio's about aven he talks about how he doubts aven will ever fail bc it's not all luck as aven plays it to be#in aven's about ratio he talks about how he believes the only reason why ratio sticks around is that everyone else is more annoying than him#aven's aware ratio doesn't even look people in the eyes when he can't stand them but he still hasn't noticed that ratio is always looking#straight at him with no barriers#they're so dumb#if you want to write them in a romantic relationship you have the whole road already paved for you but you DO have#to walk it from the very beginning#they built all the bridges needed to reach each other and refused to take even a single step on them#and the only reason is that they've always been so alone and disliked#that now that they have someone who genuinely likes them they can't even tell#it's such a new type of relationship for me I've never been into any characters like this#I'm putting them under a microscope and studying them so attentively fr#the biggest hurdle for them is really gonna be accepting that they're friends that's such a Dynamic™️

on the topic of that post about traditions, i was also talking with some friends about how i really like the "modern traditional" aesthetics of overwatch. you can definitely tell its the future, but there's a lot of regional building techniques in places that allow it that also abandon western aesthetics in favor of embracing the culture of the maps area. i know it's to give each map a unique aesthetic and the creators were not thinking as deeply about it as i am, but i enjoy thinking too much. big central cities obviously need metal and glass and so forth to support the infrastructure, but on maps for smaller locations, you can see that they're made with mostly local supplies. it was on the mind because i saw a video about the stigma against grass thatched houses in africa and how theyre seen as a backwards way of living, when in reality theyre actually the most environmentally friendly way to make a house in the area and theyre also energy efficient. you dont need to run heating and cooling through a house that heats and cools itself, you dont need to worry about food spoiling if its kept chilled naturally, and you dont need to worry about costly repairs to your house if the materials are readily available. its trying to build every shelter in a western style to try to show the world that a place has been "civilized" that leads to the loss of efficiency and culture and history and a million other things. anyway i think im probably the only person who cares about the sociopolitical implications of the funny monkey with a laser gun game this much
