Warren Haynes’ “Soul” Shines Around the World

- Allman Brothers track is Playing for Change’s Newest Song around the World

There was a time - from, say 1996 until late 2023 - when Sound Bites didn’t care if he ever heard “Soulshine” again.

But then Warren Haynes, on acoustic guitar and vocals that seem to defy the passage of time, re-recorded his 1994 Allman Brothers Band composition with a global cast for Playing for Change’s Song around the World campaign, and “Soulshine” shone brightly once again.

Turns out the overwrought song works perfectly in this setting with Shemekia Copeland, Ivan Neville and Hawaii’s Kawai Hoe on co-lead vocals - the latter also playing uke - and fantastic backgrounds emanating from ensembles in Jamaica and South Africa.

Add slide guitar from Italy; bass from Brazil; percussion from Ghana and Brazil; and a surprisingly effective saxophone solo from France, and the song takes on an entirely new meaning. And that bad taste Sound Bites has been carrying for lo these many years disappeared.

Song Review: The String Cheese Incident feat. George Porter Jr., Ivan Neville and Others - “Sneakin’ Sally through the Alley” (Live, July 12, 2024)

Vocal performances must be taken in their stride when someone is attempting to cover a song Robert Palmer made famous.

With that stipulation, the String Cheese Incident, singer/bassist George Porter Jr., keyboardist Ivan Neville, guitarist Tony Hall and a horn section pretty much killed on “Sneakin’ Sally through the Alley.”

Captured on professional video July 12 at Red Rocks, it finds the expanded Incident laying it on thick - the funk that is. Porter yowls and howls; there’s a horn break and a singalong on the final chorus; and the onstage conglomerate makes a smooth traffic circle out of what could’ve been sonic gridlock.

Now, Palmer’s version is basically perfect and anyone familiar with it will no doubt hear his voice coming through the ether. But SCI and their pals smoked this 10-minute puppy and everyone presumably got off on the results, vocal imperfections notwithstanding.

since nuna (neville x luna) are and have been one of my otps since i first became part of the hp fandom, whenever i write next gen lorcan and lysander scamander are actually lorcan and lysander longbottom and they're neville and luna's kids. but recently i had an idea for the twins that i love even more

so whenever i write next gen, lorcan and lysander also have a younger sister named alice who's 6 years younger than them. in my head, alice looks a lot like neville and the twins both look mostly like luna. i also have an oc named ivan scamander who is rolf and hannah abbott's, and he's 3 years younger than the twins.

so what if, instead of the twins being neville's from the start, they're from luna's first marriage to rolf?

luna and rolf meet and become friends when rolf returns to hogwarts for his eighth year. they get married soon after graduation, even though they're mostly just good friends. they have the twins together and when the twins are a year old, they end up divorcing.

pretty soon after rolf and hannah meet at the leaky cauldron and start talking. to be honest, hannah getting pregnant is sort of a surprise, and rolf definitely shows up at luna's in a panic when he finds out. he and hannah end up deciding to keep the kid though, aka ivan scamander.

around the same time that ivan is born, luna and neville run into each other at some event or something and start talking again. they write letters back and forth about plants and theories and the latest edition of the quibbler before neville finally works up the courage to ask her out (with a lot, and i mean a lot, of encouragement from harry and ginny) and they start dating. they get married after 2 years and alice is born another year later.

all of that is to say, lorcan and lysander are ivan's half siblings and also have a younger half-sister named alice, and i think that's great

honestly i see rolf as sort of a mess, especially with this au, so he may or may not also get divorced from hannah at some point. idk who he'd date after that - i'm thinking one of the background hufflepuff boys (justin, ernie, or zacharias)

Rules:

I used the characters' behavior in the movies to take the quiz for them. The Quiz is accurate, which was determined by sorting some of HP characters: Harry: Gryffindor/Hufflepuff (P), Slytherin/Gryffindor (S) Hermione: Gryffindor/Hufflepuff (P), Gryffindor/Ravenclaw (S) Neville: Gryffindor (P), Gryffindor/Hufflepuff (S)

Since most of the results don't give us only one house, I used this scheme: 2 points for first results in P and S, 1 point for second (additional) results in P and S. If P or S gave us only 1 house, we give it all 3 points. Example: Yondu Udonta: Slytherin/Gryffindor (P), Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff (S) means Yondu got 2 points for Slytherin, 2 points for Ravenclaw, 1 point for each Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. Since he got 2 points for different P and S, we sort him into his Primary house - Slytherin (why primary - sorting my friends showed that in such cases they prefer the primary house).
