what are some classic horror movies that you always recommend, and some more obscure ones that you love but don’t get a lot of attention? love your blog btw!

Got my first anon!! And it's super nice too 🤧 This is so lovely I'm really happy you asked.

I'm biased towards sci-fi horror and horror comedy's, but I've tried to give a bit of everything here. For classic ones I'd recommend? I'm taking some of my favourites from different eras so you can get a good feel for the changes horror went through. Noting here that I have not watched many movies from countries outside America, Australia and western Europe, just wanted to let you know in advance. Trying to fill out my horror repertoire between work and study 💀 Also this is long lmao sorry not sorry.

For early stuff my favourites would be The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari (the original horror film you could say, featuring my beloved Conrad Veidt), wonderful silent German expressionist horror from the 20s.

On top of that I really loved Universal's 1925 adaption of The Phantom of the Opera ft Long Chaney and Mary Philbin. If you like that one I'd 100% recommend watching some documentaries on youtube about it cause it's really fun, Chaney bought the rights to the film himself as he really wanted to play Erik and adapt the story to screen. He did all his own makeup and stuff too it's great.

Further down the track you have all the universal monster movies, I have unfortunately not watched them all yet but I really liked The Wolf Man, and have memories as a child seeing Creature from the Black Lagoon and enjoying it. This ties in to more obscure films I think more people should watch, but Them! also came out in this era and I love it so dearly. First horror movie I watched properly start to end, it's about giant mutant ants, and has a small cameo of Leonard Nimoy in one of his first roles :)

Right after that in the 60s you have a big uptick in Hammer horror, which is where you get a lot of fun stuff (I can't give personal recs. I've only seen their phantom..which is good but like I'm embarrassed 😔). At the same time there was stuff like Rosemary's Baby (fuck Polanski) and Night of the Living Dead.

Then there are the infamous slashers. There's a lot of them, and like the other stuff on the list it depends on what you like what you'll take to in a slasher. One of my favourites is Black Christmas (the progenitor of the slasher. idc about Psycho, Hitchcock can have nightmares about blonde women for eternity) which had a surprising nuanced look into things like abortion and critiques on classic relationship dynamics. I'm goofy though so I also like it because of the villain Billy Lenz. Goofiness is also why I adore Child's Play <3. The Original Texas Chain Saw Massacre I think is a good one to get to as well, interesting themes and even though the main characters aren't that deep I do really like Sally and Franklin. My favourite type of horror protagonists have always been family members, especially siblings. And again, if you're a fan of silly you should definitely watch its sequel, which is a horror comedy.

Non slasher classics of the 70s/80s I recommend are Stepford Wives, The Thing, Suspiria, The Fly, Possession, The Lost Boys, Alien and Aliens, plus Evil Dead 1 and 2. They're all pretty well established here on Tumblr so there's not too much to say. I've watched the most films from this era if it isn't obvious haha.

By the time the 90s came around I feel like things got a bit all over the place, in a positive way. You got a bit of everything, though there was a bit of emphasis on horror movies becoming more "serious/gritty" compared to the slashers that came just before them. If I had to pick one film it would definitely be Candyman though. Tony Todd did an immaculate job and gave life to one of the most magnetic and charismatic horror villains ever. The movie is gorgeous and I adore the writing of it too.

Runner up would be Silence of the Lambs, Clarice and Hannibal both get a big kiss on the lips from me <3

I'm not sure if it's been long enough to claim movies past the 2000s can be classics but I'll quickly list some ones I think are neat: Ginger Snaps, The Ring, [REC], Saw, Noroi, The Orphanage, Creep, I Saw The Devil, Get Out, Annihilation and His House.

I will try to be succinct for the obscure stuff (im not sure how obscure these are tbh but oh well) since I know this is getting really long lmao but here 💕

Them!, as previously mentioned.

The Phantom of the Opera from 1989. Absolutely glorious and gorgeous slasher style take on the story. I love it a lot. Has Robert Englund of Freddy Krueger fame.

Basket Case 1, 2 and 3, got to these after watching Malignant and hearing them brought up several times in reviews. They're fantastic B horror and so lovingly made it hurts.

The Hitcher!!! The original of course, which is dripping with so much homoerotic subtext it's crazy. Rutger Hauer plays obsessive freaky man so well and I love him for it.

Stigmata starring Patricia Arquette and Gabriel Byrne. It is so of its time in terms of the editing, pacing and music that I couldn't help but adore it. Suffers from unnecessary romance imo but still a great movie.

Event Horizon is thee absolute shit. Laurence Fishburne is my babygirl in every movie/show he's in and this one is no different. I was blown away watching it and my brother and I couldn't stop discussing it for like two hours after it finished haha. Hoping the director's cut will be released at some point cause I'm dying to watch it.

Joy Ride with Paul Walker. Got this one from a random horror movie generator. I still think about it a lot, there's something mesmerising about a movie with an evil truckie. I havent watched any fast and furious movies but the first one came out the same time as this so I like to pretend it's a prequel to it.

The Slumber Party Massacre remake and Slumber Party Massacre 2. The former for being one of the best remakes for horror I've seen and the latter for being batshit fun. The main villains weapon is an electric guitar drill idk what more you need.

Hello Prince, I would like to know more about your process of designing Riku's persona!

I've only seen one version of it on your blog, was that the only one you posted? Which version was it? What are your thoughts going into redesigning it?

Tell me tell me please, I would like to know!!

OK you have no idea how happy this ask made me thank you so much! It’s been rotating in my brain ever since you sent it and now I have enough brain power to answer it so here we go! Before I start word vomiting, a few disclaimers. One this is long af as usual. Two I’m going to put a trigger warning here for blood and disturbing imagery. It’s nothing too graphic but I feel like I should say it just in case. And lastly this is my own thoughts/opinions/process so um please don’t take anything I say too seriously! I felt I had to say that I don’t know why. Either way here we go for real this time.

So to start off I feel like I should explain that I have three approaches to designing a persona. I’ve designed 4 personas for Riku (with 2 or 3 other vague concepts in my head) and I’ve spent a bit of time looking into how I feel the canon personas are designed, and this is essentially what I’ve come up with to help me design my own. The first to get it out of the way, is a balanced combination of the following two. Most personas fall into this category from what I’ve seen. The second, is that I look mostly at the mythology/story of the character/figure the persona is designed on and then add personal touches to it that represent the character (like uh 80% facts and 20% character so to speak). This is the approach I took with Lugh, Riku’s ultimate persona, which he gains upon the protagonist completing his confidant. I don’t want to talk too much about his design as I want to reveal it in the comic (that I WILL eventually make) but essentially I looked at the mythology of Lugh (he’s a Celtic god of a lot of things I would really recommend reading into him he’s very interesting) and then used that as my main inspiration for the design. Once I’d gotten a fairly solid idea, then I started adding in personal touches that would link him to Riku. In terms of canon persona designs that I feel fall into this approach I feel like Caesar and Captain Kidd are good examples. Caesar especially, when you look at him you can tell that it is supposed to be the Roman emperor Caesar. 

The third approach then is essentially the opposite. I take one or two things from the figure/character’s story or designs if they exist and then add that to something I’ve made based entirely on the persona’s user. The persona that you guys have seen already - Mordred - falls into this category. Mordred is Riku’s black mask persona, essentially his Loki. He only appears in the spin off AU, Black Captain, where Riku is the black mask. I’ve answered an ask before with the bare bones plot of this AU so feel free to check that out for context. And he’s not the persona I’m currently redesigning but he has gotten an updated look since that last drawing I did (he’s more serpentine now - think Rayquaza but with wings)! Mordred for those that don’t know, is a figure in Arthurian legend - he’s the bastard son or nephew of King Arthur (depends on the version you read) and he overthrows Arthur before eventually being slain by him. That’s a very short version of the story and I am missing major details but as I said this design was more Riku oriented than Mordred oriented. Mordred is my favorite so far of Rikus personas and it is mostly because of the concept I based him off. Which is the anger that someone feels at the world is the part of you that loves you the most. It’s the part that is angry at all the injustices you have faced and wants so much better for you. That idea resonates with me so much and I really wanted to try and capture it in a design. Mordred is a horrifying creature, he’s a huge snake like dragon with a human-like torso, he’s covered in blood and is constantly bleeding, he has large pieces of his flesh missing where his skeleton juts out, a third eye on his head which is the only functioning eye, he is not supposed to look pretty. One of Mordred’s mechanics if he was in the game would be to have a trait where when Riku is in the party, on the first turn Mordred is summoned, there is a 50% chance the enemy would be inflicted with fear. He is supposed to be anger and fear personified. The fear part is important because as I said, while Mordred is absolutely grotesque and represents Riku’s terrifying rage against the world, he’s very much also the part of Riku that loves him. I haven’t shown Mordred speaking but he can, and he often talks to Riku in a very soft manner and comforts him after they’ve gone through a particularly tough Palace together. As Riku has essentially resolved himself to slaughtering a bunch of rich people in his revenge quest, the idea that someone could still love him when he’s gone to such lengths to reject his own humanity and morality ESPECIALLY himself? That scares the crap out of him. I’m kind of rambling a bit now but I just hope I was able to get across Mordred’s core concept as it’s something I’m super proud of. The other little thing I’ll mention here before I go into my thoughts on the persona I am currently redesigning, is that the tongue you see in the OG Mordred drawing is very relevant to an ability he has, essentially his own call of chaos. I won’t go into it because it's disturbing af and also spoilers. Yeah Mordred kind of awoke a love of designing fucked up looking creatures in me that I never knew I had. Oh and in terms of canon personas that fall into this design approach Johanna is a great example. Looking at her, at least to me, it’s pretty difficult to figure out who she’s supposed to be but you can instantly link her to Makoto!

Now onto the persona I’m redesigning as of right now - Pimpernel. Pimpernel is Riku’s initial persona and for me, is the most important one to get right. As seen in Strikers and PQ2 (and the p4 cast in arena) most spin off games and promotional work use the initial personas for the Thieves so it's important that Pimpernel has an easily recognizable and distinguishable design. So far my approach for him has been the first method I mentioned, a balance of both the story of the original character and Riku himself. Pimpernel is the titular character of the Scarlet Pimpernel, a novel by Baroness Orczy. It is set during the French revolution and the main character is Sir Percy Blakeney (who Riku’s third semester persona will be based off of) who leads a double life as the elusive Scarlet Pimpernel. Fun fact but he’s actually said to be the inspiration for characters like Zorro! I actually have a whole thing on why Pimpernel is a great choice for Riku but that is an entirely different can of worms I will not get into now. Pimpernel is definitely the hardest design of all of Riku’s personas so far, because a) I’m a perfectionist and b) there’s not really a lot of solid designs for him. There are several movies which I’ve been using as reference and I’ve looked into the fashion during the French Revolution. The Riku part has also been difficult. Now that I have a final design for his thief outfit it’s a little easier as I can use that as reference, but I’m still a little lost. As Riku is a very skilled fencer, I’m trying to incorporate some fencing gear into his design. I’m also looking at Riku’s current mentality at the time of awakening to Pimpernel and trying to add that in too. I actually have a very clear idea of how to do that and link it into Lugh and Percy’s designs as well but it will be easier to show than tell once Pimpernel has a design I’m happy with. And as a bonus I’m also referencing Penthesilea and actually Mitsuru herself (there’s one small detail I’m hoping people will notice that connects him to Mitsuru) because Personas are shaped by one's thoughts and ideas, and as Mitsuru has a huge influence on Riku, I felt that should show up in the persona designs (Lugh also references Artemisia and Percy references Isis). We haven’t really seen any persona users who are related (aside from the Suou brothers but I haven’t really looked into their personas yet so I can’t properly comment) so I want to try and explore how that could possibly affect how a persona looks!

So you forced him to watch a movie with you which doesn't happen very often. Vincent works a lot and when he does relax, you usually take him for walks so he sees the sun at least once a week.

Your legs are on his lap, he's comfortably snuggled up next to you and you turn on Twilight.

He's so into it.

I see Vincent as someone who loves gothic stuff, dark art, vampires, and all that stuff.

Therefore, he knows that Twilight is not a good movie really, but he loves the vibes and the cinematography so much.

He really, really wants to be team Jacob but he ends up being team Edward. You tease him for it and he throws a pillow after you. Which really loses its effect because he immediately asks if he hurt you after he does it.

However, Vincent is an awkward person when it comes to socialization. So, watching Bella scenes is pure horror for him. At some point, he's hiding his face in his hands, unable to take it anymore.

Don't be surprised when he makes the characters out of wax.

'Y/N don't look at me like that, they fit into this town.'

You could really say he's inspired.

Regardless, please watch better vampire movies with him. If he's this smitten while watching Twilight, he'll go insane when he'll see Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Bo Sinclair

The fuck is this.

He thought he was sitting down with you, relaxing to one of the sappy romance movies he sees on TV every evening just to seduce you in the middle of it so he doesn't have to watch any more of it.

But this? He didn't prepare for this.

Bo really hates it. He hates the cast, he hates the plot, he hates the romance, he hates that the movie's for teens.

However, he loses his shit whenever Bella does anything. Literally. He's sitting there wheezing whenever she's awkward (which is always), coughing from how hard he's laughing.

"God damn, this movie's a piece of shit."

After you're done watching he pretends to hate it but he keeps quoting it weeks after you two watched it. And he cracks up every time.

Bo also tells his brothers so now you have to watch it again with the whole family.

So yeah, watch more bad movies with him, he loves to make fun of them.

Lester Sinclair

"You sure this is the right movie?" "Aight, if you say so."

He's confused but he's trying to stay supportive.

It takes Lester a little while to realize that you know the movie sucks, and you want to watch it anyway. That lessens his confusion and now he even cracks jokes about the plot to make you laugh.

He's into the love story and rooting for Jacob.

And then really angered when Edward wins.

It's really funny to watch him get more and more into it and by the end of the movie he acts like he's watching a football game.

The acting doesn't bother him s much as it does his brothers. He thinks it makes it even more hilarious. I feel like he already watched movies with bad acting in his free time because he really doesn't care.

He's the only brother who wants to watch the other parts following the first one. He's also the only brother who voluntarily watches romance movies with you.

I see him as a pretty romantic person and I also think he'd get emotional at sad love movies.

“GAH!”loid tried standing up as quickly as possible hitting his big toe. “Ouch!” “Papa are you okay?!” The small figure spoke worried about him. ‘Wait that voice is that Anya?’ “Anya s’that you?” loid groaned.

“U-uh yes”

“What’s wrong what’s bugging you normally you’d be fast asleep around this time”.

“Well I had a bad dream we’re you and mama didn’t *sniff* didn’t love me anymore” anya slowly began to tear up she ran and grabbed onto Loid’s leg sobbing. ‘Did someone at the academy say something to her doesn’t matter right now my job is to cheer her up’

“Anya that’ll never happen me and Yor could never hate you” Loid comforted anya even though it really was true loid and Yor love anya besides all of f the spy stuff they would do anything for her.

“I’ll always love you” loid smiled before he picked up anya and spun her around as she started giggling. “Why are you giggling?” Loid asked confused.

Loid looked over at his laptop debating whether or not he should finish that essay. ‘Eh I’ll finish tomorrow I should probably to go to sleep aswell’ was Loid’s last before dozing off.

Yor came out of her room thinking it was Franky and loid goofing around again. But she seen loid and anya sleep together on the sofa she assumed loid was over working and anya just came out here and laid on his chest and fell asleep.

Yor went to a closet to grab a blanket for them. As she covered them up she seen his laptop open with an essay he had to write to the Desmond’s. ‘Maybe I should type that for him as a repayment for him helping me out.

After typing the essay she didn’t realize how late it was ‘ITS 1:53 jeez I didn’t expect it to be this late’ she got up as she instantly sat back down looking at a bright screen late at night in a dark room then trying to get up right after not the best thing.

Yor really wanted to go to sleep her two options were to drunkly walk back to her room and possibly end up sleeping on the floor or just sleep on the sofa with Loid and anya

‘ughhhhh whyyyyyy I’ll just- ugh’ Yor began to spaz out loid looked up at her “if your too tired to walk back to your room you can sleep out here” loid gently insisted as he pulled her head to his chest. “A-alright!” Yor deeply blushed. “Thank for typing that paper for me too”.

- after a traumatic event where his best friend died kazuha moves to a new town to try and get a fresh start

- he finds a cafe called komore teahouse and becomes a frequent customer there its quiet and they serve nice tea, its where he meets and befriends thoma, ayaka and aether/lumine

- and life's getting better a bit, he's slowly healing

- thoma offers a job at the teahouse which kazuha accepts, he's also been writing poetry a lot more and is hoping to get some published, things are getting better!

- on his way to work one day he runs into gorou who's with taroumaru outside the teahouse, they talk for a bit before kazuha has to go to work and gorou leaves to do whatever it is he does

- gorou visits more over the next few weeks to see taroumaru again and he and kazuha become friends and start spending more time together outside of the teahouse

- it gets to like autumn time and they go on walks in the park and there's maple leaves and stuff

-gorou introduces kazuha to his best friend kokomi who invites him to her book club with xingqiu, lisa and fischl

-everything is so much better and kazuha is feeling happy again and yet a part of him feels so guilty for being happy because tomo is still dead

- in the weeks leading up to the anniversary of tomos death kazuha becomes a lot more distant and even quieter than usual, his friends are really worried but he keeps insisting he's fine

-he shows up to work but that's about it

-when he misses their book club meeting kokomi gets really worried, he *always* comes and so she and gorou go to check up on him only to find he's not home

-he had taken the train to the place he used to live in order to visit tomos grave

-his phone keeps ringing but he's too upset to answer

- he sits by tomos grave and tells him about his life since moving to the new town and all the people he's met

-he wishes tomo could meet them too

- when he gets back its late, but he finds gorou and kokomi waiting for him at the station and they talk and give him hugs and let him know they're there for him

-gorou walks with kazuha back to his apartment and they talk more and then they kiss (to set the scene it is a dark and rainy winter night and they are illuminated by the glow of a street lamp)

- kazuha is then like 'oh shit' and panics and runs leaving a very confused and slightly hurt gorou standing outside

-kazuha is scared he's using gorou as a replacement for tomo (he's not) and thinks gorou deserves better than that

- gorou is upset and now thinks kazuha doesn't like him

- they don't talk for a few days then kazuha comes over to gorou and says 'I'm sorry, what happened the other day was a mistake, you deserve better' etc etc and gorou is standing here like 'wtf I actually liked that "mistake" and also I like you.' and kazuha is like ???? and then they kiss again ig and talk some more and it's not all good but it's getting better and they love eachother

this got more and more incoherent as it got to the end but anyways 🤗 this is a fun au I might add more
