Although I love this musical for its cute little cringy heart and soul the costuming was something fuckin else man like were the mid 2010’s okay…

But the original book was published in 2004 and anyone who knows me knows that I am a HUGE fan of 2000s fashion. So I while I was having my little nostalgia trip this past week I wanted to 2000s-fy these three 💗 and I love ittttttttt

Also some extra stagedorks shit because upon relistening to the musical many times this week I finally realized how sweet they are. Like I was an avid boyf-riends er when I was 12 but tbh Jeremy and Christine are so it, and I like Jeremy and Michael’s friendship lol.

like i feel like a popular girl falling for an unpopular boy isnt as revolutionary as you may think (especially since most people go off a cast where both are white), especially under the circumstances, whereas it’s so damn rare i see a female love interest who is so blatantly neurodivergent coded (and not in an objectified manic pixie dream girl way, bc it shows she gets mistreated for her weirdness and that she has a lot of anxiety of her own that she can’t quite overcome), and idk while i love brooke and people can read her as neurodivergent if they want it just. annoys me. that people still discount her and jeremy as “cliche” and can’t ship jeremy with anybody else without shitting on how jeremy and christine’s moments together are so full of relatable autistic/adhd coding.

which bmc scenes make you the softest bc for me it's gotta be most of the stagedorks scenes ESPECIALLY a guy that i'd kinda be into. mostly bc of christine cause her and michael are my favs (i love them all sm though) but also bc of jeremy because he is a close second to both of them. also vimh but vimh makes me cry a lot although nowadays i can hardly watch one scene without at the very least tearing up. anyways yeah which ones make you soft

i simply rewatched bmc and took notes for this and really got off track at points in the sense of sticking to What Makes You Softest but that’s how it goes babey

ACT ONE - in mts when jeremy is just having a whole moment being smitten in christine's presence while she's inelegantly picking herself up off the floor and smearing on lip balm and adjusting a skirt wedgie - jeremy and michael just being default that glad to meet each other in the middle of a random schoolday - michael hyping up jeremy's crush on christine and just encouraging this momentum to get jeremy to sign up for the play - ilpr.....that christine stops after like, the first two verses and goes back to her book b/c she doesn't figure someone's looking to listen to her beyond that but then she sees jeremy's still 110% paying attention and the whole rest of the song enfolds with increasing enthusiasm - jake doing that whole bit "all the pressure i feel to be the best at everything all the time" lmao classic stuff here, depressing content delivered in this humorousse way. charming moment - "leave me alone, i've had a bad day" - 2pg......when michael taps jeremy on the shoulder to get jeremy to join in on his choreo, which jeremy then does.....that michael asks if jeremy will be too cool for Video Games and jeremy just responds Emotionally Directly......we love the Favorite Person moment......that this song just ends with the two of them grooving 2gether god bless - jeremy stammering and Tics and Fidgeting when the squip remarks uponst it - jeremy delivering the Looking Pretty Sexy Brooke as awkwardly as possible and she's just like "thanks :)" - jeremy's own Theatricality coming out......hey hamlet - jeremy spinning around in place alternately addressing both brooke and the squip with "oh i'm supposed to meet my friend michael" - nice little detail wherein brooke signals for chloe to join in on her choreo - speaking of, v fond of the Moment jeremy is in on both their choreo......brooke sort of alarming jeremy with her whole attempted grande finale, straw and all, ft. the first instance of her messing with his hair so much she's just tugging his entire head around - cute that jake and rich have a sort of 2pg-esque handshake routine too - jeremy's "that's sad, what should i do" reaction re: jenna - rich's Earnest invitation to come over and play xbox... - "bonjour, jeremy" "ooh brooke!" and this whole exchange, her complimenting him, him laughing at "That Was French" and remembering to ask about pinkberry - love the whole choreo sequence/s in sync up, especially fond of his Moments with the girls, bumping hips with chloe (twice), hearing some Gossip from jenna, posing with brooke.... ;__; - the bowling alley performance art exchange before agtikbi ;____; - agtikbi......the glittery hearts choreo.....the whatever! the interlude or whatever!!! the I Guess A Part Of Me section hhhhoughhh ;o; ;o; ;o; ;o; ;o; that she pulls him into a hug and puts her head against his shoulder omggg ;_________; - brooke just trying to interact with jeremy the Right Way w/o any guidance on the bleachers and it continues to be awkward and funny....like comforting just his Leg while he converses w/his squip.....how she just ends up Physically pushing him around by the hands and head and shoulder and etc......whole situation here in upgrade.mp3 clearly less than Ideal but jeremy and brooke are nevertheless very cute individually And together - meanwhile jake also trying to genuinely Be With christine in upgrade is also charming lol, quitting archery to hang w/a girl like her.... - i always love when the Playful Shove brooke gives jeremy at "but at the mall, you looked at me" pushes him back a whole few steps....this moment of them truly Getting each other sans anyone else's interference.....tres magnifique - jeremy being That psyched to see michael for the first time (in like, less than one full day lol)....michael being That psyched just hearing that jeremy's cool scifi thing worked out after all - lgw ;_________________________; - like i'm some normal, handsome guy..... - giving us All that silence after "The Problem Has Always Been Me" - the whole bit where he launches into the "I'm Not The [series of insults]" and i've realized it's really especially a stretch to say i'm Soft for these moments in lgw but i Am vulnerable and that's its power. little 1" tall will roland on my screen here just made me shed a real tear doing That.....

Why mlm and wlw are more popular in the bmc fandom

Quick little note, I’m not against any ships mentioned and I only know the musical

1. Who’s in the fandom: be more chill is a musical that has a lot more young fans and fans that are LGBTQ+ or at least allies. It’s logical that this would lead to more people being supportive and enjoying “gay” ships

2. The m/f relationships in the musical: there aren’t many relationships in this musical, but most of the ones that do exist don’t seem that good. We know that jake and Chloe were dating and from what we see of them they didn’t seem it have a very genuine relationship. Jeremy only got with Brooke to become popular and Brooke only started to like Jeremy after he got a squip. Mr. heere and his wife got divorced. Jeremy and christine’s relationship is one we never get to see, the best interaction we have of those 2 genuinely talking is at the party which leads to Jeremy asking her out and she saying no.

3. Chemistry between the characters: (this is mainly just about boyf riends and stagedorks, also disclaimer i prefer boyf reinds so this section has a bit more of my opinions) right off the bat i will say that Jeremy and Christine do seem to have some chemistry, but their feelings for each other only become mutual at the end. Throughout the musical we see that Christine sees Jeremy as a friend and she multiple times rejects jeremy’s advances. It is important to note that feeling for someone can change and that’s seemingly what happened at the end. Now compared to stagedorks, boyf riends seems to have a bit more chemistry mainly with the song “two player game.” It’s also a pretty much agreed upon in the fandom that micheal is gay (idk if it have been confirmed by cast or writers so for me it’s still a headcanon) and the ship name boyf riends is one that comes from the canon story

I believe that its all these factors combined that has made the wlw and (mainly) mlm ships more popular

14. things you said after you kissed me

“…and you hit every single pin!” Christine exclaims.

“I guess it’s a good thing I brought the longer wiffle ball bat,” Jeremy says, “otherwise I never would have reached them all.”

Christine kicks a small stone out of her path, and it skids across the sidewalk and into the gutter, mere steps from the crosswalk where she and Jeremy are now stopping for the first time since they left the bowling alley. They’d headed out in a rush to get away from Joe, the general manager, before he could officially kick them out, giggly and shaky with adrenaline and bracing themselves against the mid-November late afternoon chill, and somewhere in the three blocks they ran to get here, they’d grabbed each other’s hands. Neither of them has let go yet.

“Do you think,” Jeremy says, then stops, swinging his empty hand back and forth (the wiffle ball bat was a tragic casualty of their hasty departure) for a few seconds before restarting. “Do you think maybe we should feel bad? About ruining people’s night out at the bowling alley, or damaging their property, or… something?”

“Well…” It’s a tricky question, because Christine does feel bad, kind of, for scaring the kids in the three lanes next to them who were there to celebrate the end of their soccer season, or possibly for a birthday party (the soccer ball-shaped and -decorated cake that half of them were nursing slices of didn’t make it any clearer), and for the middle-aged couple on the other side of their lane who both rolled gutter balls because they were distracted by her thrashing back and forth while shouting “SOCIAL DISLOCATION CAN EASILY BREED A REACTIONARY FORM OF NOSTALGIA!” And a little bit for the bowling ball, too, even though logically she knows it couldn’t have felt anything when she dropped it on the floor and it got all scuffed.

“I guess it makes sense to feel that way,” she says. “But I don’t think we have to. We had something important to say, and we didn’t hurt anybody or do any permanent damage.” Well, not any significant permanent damage. 

“Joe was pissed, though.”

“…He’ll forgive us eventually.” 

“Maybe he’s worried about getting bad Yelp reviews,” Jeremy says. “If we show up in one of those, he’ll never let us back in.”

“He’s probably reading them to himself and getting mad,” Christine says. “‘Pizza was undercooked. Shoes were too expensive. It was clean but the air conditioning was broken. Halfway through our game, two teenagers came in and started chanting about social capital, and one of them acted out the process of childbirth with a bowling ball. We will not be returning.’”

“‘One point five stars,’” Jeremy adds. “Except he’d say it like —” He drops his voice an octave and puts on an accent that would have made the dialect coach who came in for a week of play rehearsal during freshman year for Death of a Salesman (thankfully with its original script intact) give a one-woman standing ovation. “One point five stars? Those damn kids!”

“Whoa,” Christine gasps. “You sounded just like him.” 

Jeremy blinks. “I did?”

“Yeah! Try saying —” Christine thinks for a moment. “‘Why aren’t you kids wearing bowling shoes? You’re ruining the floor!’” Her attempt at Joe’s voice isn’t quite gruff enough, not nearly as good as Jeremy’s imitation.

Jeremy clears his throat. “Why aren’t you kids wearing bowling shoes?” he repeats, still disgruntledly spot-on. “You’re ruining the floor!”

Christine giggles, which means that within moments Jeremy does too, in his own voice — he laughs high and loud, and it sounds exactly how Christine is feeling, bubbling over with ideas and ambitions and pure electric joy over getting to make a yearslong dream of hers come true with someone she likes so much.

They both trail off, getting their breath back from the silent, frigid air, but Jeremy’s still beaming. When he smiles, really smiles, his mouth turns perfectly heart-shaped, and Christine can’t stop staring. 

“What?” he says, sounding a little confused — he must have noticed her looking.

Christine twists a heel against the concrete. “I kind of… really want to kiss you right now.”

Jeremy squeezes her hand, interlacing their fingers. “I kind of do, too.”

Christine stands on tiptoe, putting her other hand on his shoulder, and Jeremy lowers his head to kiss her. His lips are a little chapped (Christine has yet to convince him of the unmatchable magic of EOS lip balm) but warm, and he holds her close, and if she didn’t know otherwise she’d swear it was a balmy summer evening.

A car beeps at them as it rounds the corner, making them jump and bump foreheads. Christine had completely forgotten they were waiting here to cross the street.

“Rude,” she says, dropping back onto her heels and tugging at the bottom of her sweater to straighten it out. 

“No kidding.” Jeremy looks around at the crosswalk signals, to their left and ahead of them, all lit up with WALK symbols. “Uh, which way do we want to go now?”

Not “you” — “we.” Christine holds out her hand for Jeremy to take.

“Forward.”

I was wondering if you had a particular place where you watched musicals at and if you could recommend me some musicals to watch if so? O: The ones you've been reblogging look so good!

okay, so it can honestly be really hard to find a way to watch a lot of broadway muscials because there often aren’t professional recordings or movie versions so you either have to go searching for a bootleg or just settle for the soundtrack. people unfortunately often have to use clips that are available on youtube or sharpen up low quality bootlegs to make gifsets, and i basically just search “(show name) bootleg” on youtube or here on tumblr and see what i can find tbh dfgkfs. most bootlegs aren’t exactly great quality either but we take what we can get. broadway sadly isn’t the most accessible thing to get into.

but even though there’s not 1 easy place to watch them all, i can still recommend some of my favorite musicals!! i really really love musical theater so i’ll try to stick to just 5 skjgfhdf but here’s another post i made last time someone asked me about musical recs! this will get kinda long so i’ll stick it under a readmore! also, i’m gonna mostly list different ones from the other post i made, so if you’re curious about any of those or really any of the musicals you see me blog about feel free to ask!

1. one of my favorite musicals of all time is wicked, which is based on a book that’s basically a wizard of oz prequel about elphaba, the wicked witch of the west, and glinda the good witch, who become best friends in school! it’s about as cheesy as it sounds but i adore it and i have a youtube playlist of the soundtrack, and there’s also a bootleg with the original cast on youtube!

2. something that’s quickly becoming one of my favorites is hadestown, a musical that adapts the greek myth of orpheus and eurydice–where orpheus journeys into the underworld to save his wife and fails to rescue her at the last second–into a somewhat more modern retelling set to folk music! its official broadway cast album isn’t out yet and it’s gone through a looot of changes through each of its productions, but full audio of the broadway version is available here, i have a playlist of the original workshop version’s music here, and a (very low quality but it’s all that currently exists afaik) video of the london version is here.

3. newsies is based on a 1992 movie musical of the same name, and is about a group of underpaid newsboys from 19th century new york rising up to go on strike, which probably sounds very boring but i like the characters a lot and the music is a ton of fun. and it stars jeremy jordan, who also plays varian in tangled the series! there’s actually a professionally filmed version of it that can be watched here, and i also have a youtube playlist of the soundtrack.

4. the prom is about a lesbian student named emma whose school prom gets canceled so that she won’t be allowed to bring her girlfriend alyssa, and four broadway actors who try to help her because they see it as an opportunity to get good press. it has really fun music and an adorable canon lesbian couple! here’s a playlist of the broadway soundtrack, but the only bootleg i’ve been able to find is from pre-broadway so it will have different lyrics and a slightly different cast, though you can still watch it here. (edit because i forgot to say this the first time: the playlist i linked includes 2 different versions of the song “you happened” and that’s because the song was changed drastically when the musical moved to broadway but i prefer the old version adkjfsgs, so i put the broadway version on there first and the old one second because i wanted them both in my playlist)

5. rent is a rock musical that follows the life of a group of friends, most of whom are broke and/or performance artists, living during the aids crisis in the late 1980s-early 1990s, and most of whom are also lgbt and/or poc! i’m very bad at explaining rent’s story but it’s really uplifting and a little sad, the cast is extremely diverse, and every song is awesome. here’s a youtube playlist of the songs, and a professionally recorded version of the musical itself is here, although it will have a different cast than the songs in the playlist. there’s also a movie which is a bit different but still good, though i’m not sure of a free place to watch it.

you can also check out the website stagedork and see what bootlegs people have uploaded to it!! for example i can see that aladdin, frozen, and the lion king are on it right now, and they’re all based on the popular disney movies of the same name and are all pretty good imo!

Welp this seems to be circulating again for last year and I've gotten some feedback about it

So lemme just update this shit and explain my points (or change them if they've changed at all)

1) cinnabun is a great ship on its own but is usually just used as an "oh everyone else in the squip squad are dating so should these two" thing and that just feels really cheap considering these two would have a great dynamic

2) i'm not bashing people who do the expensive headphones and deere combo! hell, i do it too sometimes. what i'm saying is that oftentimes the individual dynamics aren't really focused on. it's usually just expensive headphones and deere so happens to be there (or sometimes vice versa)

3) honestly i'm not explaining this. i still can't excuse squip ships that aren't riverway (or squipdew /j)

4) boyfs is toxic because their friendship is already unhealthy and there's clearly some kind of power dynamic even if michaels oblivious to it; it's not healthy and they don't listen to each other well. it just wouldn't be a good ship right after squip shit. but later down the line or in aus? sure, man! if you dont skip over the tough shit.

stagedorks isnt inherently toxic but it is unhealthy in the sense that what started out as just a normal crush turned into an itemization. the squip used christine as a reward for jeremy, just the ultimate trophy at the end of the goal. she treats her like an object that he can attain by attracting her attention by dating other girls (like brooke, who he also mistreated despite her vulnerability towards him). hell, the guy tried to fucking ask her out when she was clearly having a rough time because, you know, her boyfriend was being a douchebag and just when she thought she could have some peace and crack a few jokes with a friend, he asks her out. shallow move. but again, later down the line or in aus would be better. however, i could see a possibility of them talking it all out after the squip shit and taking it slow and all. so it's honestly not a lost cause

however pinkberry (which i censor ironically, in case that was missed; it's an inside joke with my mutual) is pretty much toxic no matter what angle you look at it. i genuinely don't think it's a plausible ship in canon or anywhere close to canon considering the best thing for these two is probably distance and shit. if you really wanted to ship this, again go later on or au route. just remember to keep both gals in character :))

5) i regret nothing about this statement. speech impediments aren't cute. and they shouldn't be emphasized when you write. it's like how you shouldn't write in any weird way about people using sign language, because you don't have to reinforce it over and over. (ex: "blah blah blah," she signed; "yada yada yada," he lisped; those are good reminders that aren't bringing those things to the spotlight). i'll admit, early on, i used to do this in my writing, but it was only when rich was drunk in a oneshot. which, yeah, that would worsen a lisp (to my knowledge) but just let me say, writing the lisp out with all the extra "th"s is just putting way too much attention on it. not to mention it's just hard to read (though i will say, sometimes other characters might misinterpret words, which i honestly haven't seen yet, but just thought i'd mention)

6) this was made more extreme by the caps, i'm sorry, but yeah. rich 5"5'. he's short for a guy. and most people who call him small are probably chicks or otherwise afab (no shade from your local enby guy, just being logical here)

7) i said what i said. cis people please be careful about trans/gnc headcannons. and trans people, if you're going to use an identity for a character that you're not too educated on, please learn about it just in case. not only for accuracy but also to not offend people with that alignment or get any information about that alignment misconstrued

8) these are all really specific examples and this one's honestly just opinionated because that's literally what no nuance november's about. but its october (happy halloween btw!) for one more day so here i am adding nuance. but yeah, basically, moral of the take is to consider whether certain ships would be more compatible platonically or romantically

9) y'all still are smh. cmon i need obscure rarepair content /lh, nf

10) people can headcanon michael however they want! if they wanna hc him with depression, cool, whatever. i think i just said this because i personally have depression. and i totally get projecting all the bad shit onto the happy character, but im kind of someone who figures things out logically? idk, michael just doesn't seem like the depression type to me. i think he has anxiety and existentialism but i dont think, in canon, he has depression. and like i said, rich canonically has depression, which has kind of been disregarded. but the point is that if some trait can't work for your favorite character, maybe look at the other ones and see if it fits any of them

11) WE NEED TO OVERTHROW THE BOYFS SUPREMACY (most of the artists are actually rlly cool tho i love yall. i just think other ships deserve some spotlight)

12) ,,i have very mixed feelings on ocs yall JFLDNS. but like, yeah, i mostly agree with what i said here. if ocs are gonna majorly fuck with canon, i don't think they should be used in canon. simple as that. but im not at all discouraging people to make ocs! hell, me and my mutual both have ocs we ship with our favorite characters. or sometimes, at least in my case, it's platonic. like i hc michael to have met a theater guy named adan during the whole squipcident but it's not a huge deal. but okay, cringe culture is dead, if yall wanna make mary sues, go for it, i honestly don't care. i've always been strung up about mary/gary sues but i've honestly just started to not give a fuck so yk. go off. do what makes you happy gamers :)

13) this is honestly just calling to mind the character's body types. and generally, this can vary and can depend on different things. like i dont think george salazar's that chunky but i do like to think of michael as having a larger body type. so idk why i said this bc its literally just a hc that rich is more physically buff than jake. all im asking is that yall please dont do anything about jenna's body type because in both bway and west end, she's plus-sized and people should respect that

15) honestly, i think i just put this because i saw someone else say it and i was like "hm makes sense." and like yeah i do agree with it, but it's also okay to have preferences, yk? my hcs for characters tend to be a mix of bway and two river adaptations (ex: my jeremy acts and mostly looks like two river jere but has glasses and that blue-yellow shirt; also when writing/roleplaying, i usually go with a two river jake that acts like bway jake because im biased towards two river but i agree that he's kinda more of a dickhead)

for my animated icons, i usually look through jared’s tag or through animatics on youtube! particularly ones that feature jared a lot ( so, sincerely me and good for you are usually my go-to’s )

for my irl ones, i screencap the boot ( i use the one on stagedork typically ) , but i also tend to screencap vids will roland is in! i haven’t gotten around to screencapping them, but his broadway vlogs and any singing he’s done ( like his mitb vid, my unfortunate erection is 1 i haven’t iconed yet but i will Soon, etc etc ) . also, just random photos of the musical / cast that float around!

i Enjoy scrabble and aggravation, which is this game w/ marbles which is like, 15% strategy and 85% luck so you can’t get too competitive 

 i haven’t played too many Video Games, especially not in recent years…i always enjoyed desktop games, like the point and click nancy drew games are my shit……later on like, portal 2 would be a great go-to game b/c usually i have a godawful hard time with Puzzles but the parameters of the puzzles in that game are so clear that i can actually enjoy it……i’m fond of amnesia tdd though i never finished it and the parameters of its puzzles are very much NOT clear. oh wait, then there’s all the shit we played via my brother’s Consoles Through The Years….the two of us taking a literal decade to beat donkey kong country….mario kart antics and driving the course backwards….we stan Galaga thanks to a namco collection and got to play it Arcade Style like a decade later at this convention lol….also on his ps4 we’d do Multiplayer stuff but really low stakes goofing around….ssbb but our real objective was just to desperately go after pokeballs and lose our shit if it was a meowth or invent really terrible maps named after pemberly (pemberdeath)….play uncharted and do terribly…….this lotr game he had was great too, like one map where we’d just ignore the Given Objective and get on horses and race around in a loop for like twenty minutes. that’s real gaming.
