Honestly, adding a bit of my two cents here, but it also doesn't help with how some had many people around them dream of the "american dream" ideal. I grew up with a mom who idolised the US, to the point where she didn't want me and my sister to consume the "dirty" Brasilian things, mainly muisc, even tho the american media was no less "dirty" than the brasil media she so despises (an example would be muisc, while she could understand what the Brasilian songs said, which involved sex and butt and drugs, she couldn't fully understand the English muiscs and let us listen to it. Me and my sister would be confused why she didn't like one but the other even tho they said the same things just in different tunes and languages, we were able to learn English more than she did and understood more than she did)

I could go on a deep dive about the issues of my childhood, but we're not here for that.

What i will say is what happens in the end, I'm here feeling like a "gringa" (foreigner) on my own damn home, like i dont belong here, but I'm not "amarican" enough either. I'm stuck at trying to feel connected again with my home country nowadays, but i can't relate to anything all that much.

The US media affects alot, and i honestly wish i could have seen more of stuff involving my home. The hot Christmas, the lack of autumn, the sunny days, the tropical tress being just part of everyday life, the walks in the muds on the farms, the need to jump in every river you see, etc. etc.

Were there cartoons and shows about my home and its culture? Yes, but you can't deny how overshadowed they can be compared to the US media, and with how the older gen who praised it also scewerd the vision to the kids too.

I wish I could even start how to write about how tropical or even "warm" places are never portrayed as "home" in art (especially in pop culture), if that makes sense. They are always portrayed as wild places, exotic places, or both, but they're never shown as places were people live their lives.

Main characters don't ever come from a tropical country. There aren't sitcoms set in a hot city in the tropics (well, of course there are telenovelas) about the daily lives of normal people. Fantasy and science fiction series often start in places that look suspiciously like medieval Europe, and when they go to a jungle or desert land or planet, it's because something Exotic is about to happen.

Temperate climates (and their cultures) are The Default. Every other place, in real life or in fiction, is judged against them.

To the point that people who live in the tropics are jealous of snowy Christmas. Because that's what we've been raised with with the cultural monopoly of the US/Europe.

It's so weird. Everything has to have snowy winters, orange fall leaves, and pine trees in fiction. I live in a place where winter lasts a month, there are palm trees everywhere, and long, hot summers. I could never relate. Bro I'm j jus existing here.

an angle i enjoy in cosmic/eldritch horror is when, instead resorting to the old classic "the horrors being so incomprehensible that they break your brain and drive you mad" cliché, the premise is that in comprehending the horrors you are so changed by the experience that your new state is indistinguishable to an outside observer from madness. you comprehend the unknowable just fine, but actually communicating that to anyone else is impossible because they just don't have the mental framework required to understand it. the eldritch horrors don't drive you mad. what does is the ordinary everyday horror of finding yourself isolated, ridiculed and doubted at every turn, no matter how hard you try to make yourself heard and understood.

It's understandable to say no one wants to be in the state curly was in for most of the game; he didnt even want it but that didnt make him any less human.

If anything you should be uncomfortable with his presence because you're playing as curly, he knows what you did and whos responsible and if he can't tell anyone he'll make sure you don't forget. Why are we trying to make this intentionally queasy part of the game palatable by treating curly more like a pet? Its not meant to be like that.

Btw when i say intentionally queasy i dont mean "look at this freak of nature lmao disabled people are only good in horror because theyre FREAKS!!" Type of way

why do people act shocked when theyre told that putting a disabled man on the floor (where he'd be in EXCRUCIATING pain) and making him press little dog buttons (you know the ones) where they are loudly announced as 'pet talking buttons' when actual buttons for disabled people to speak (with better complex sentences other than 'ouch' or 'sad' or 'sorry') are sitting right there ☹️ you'd think it'd be common sense for at least the mouthwashing fandom to handle this seriously but only a few people are taking this seriously and actually being honest and speaking up that 'hey man! giving a disabled person dog buttons is dehumanizing asf!' with also disabled people in the community speaking up and saying the same thing and they're ignored all for 'but think of the funny memes 🥺🥺🥺' or 'well, they couldnt find anything else!' but why would dog buttons be on a freighter ship anyways. atp an aac makes way more sense. there are real life communication devices that have been made WITHOUT dehumanizing a disabled character, mind you a communication device that wouldnt be so painful for him by giving it eye-tracking. something about equating a disfigured and disabled person in constant pain who also cannot speak to a dog is NOT okay, and i dont understand why people cant comprehend it. anyways thanks for coming to my ted talk i have a weird feeling i will have to block multiple people crawling into my inbox and reblogs trying to defend why they think giving captain curly DOG BUTTONS to speak is okay. also respectfully don't take my word as gospel when i speak about actual disabled people saying this is dehumanizing, i am not disabled but it was a mention that the community is ignoring the voice of actual disabled people saying that the treatment of curly in fandom, especially with this animatic, is dehumanizing.

sometimes I think about how when I went to college for a year before I dropped out (basically failed out,) the counselors/dean told me they can't help me at all or give any accommodations unless I have an official autism/adhd diagnosis. that might sound logical at first, but when you think about it more, it's actually quite fucked up. if someone is struggling really bad, what's the harm in helping them? why do they require a paper to get even the smallest amount of help? people who don't need help aren't going to be failing miserably without help! even NTs could benefit from some adjustments to the horrible school system! (but changing the entire system is a whole other conversation that the school system isnt ready for)

but even if you do agree to jump through their hoops, you realize it's even more fucked up that the diagnosis process requires YEARS in most cases (in my case it took 4 or 5 years, can't recall exactly now, for autism/adhd diagnosis, which would have meant i finished school before getting it if i managed to mot fail out, or i wait that long before going back, which is a whole struggle itself) and they also tried billing me for THOUSANDS of dollars because of insurance issues!!

so you put a ton of time and money into this, and then get told the only accommodation they are willing to give you for autism and adhd is "a little extra time on tests"

....

my test scores were the best part of my whole class experience. that was NOT what I struggled with!!!!! those tests were all online and could be done in the comfort of your home where you can accommodate yourself and have plenty of time left over when you finish them because you are comfy in your own space, (and also, no one was stopping you from having your notes/books/google open to find the answers,) and you don't even need a time consuming, expensive diagnosis for that!

ffxiv garlemald discourse is so funny because people will go "ugh people just cant stand it when things aren't black and white" and then you look at how the empire are portrayed in stormblood and shadowbringers and its like hm. that seems like a pretty intense and accurate display of violent imperialism to me! the games like 50/50 to me on how it tackles these themes because I actually like the garlemald arc in EW, I think it has a lot of horrific and powerful scenes depicting how self destructive fascist propaganda and beliefs are, but I also think it doesn't go far enough on some fronts. the garleans' xenophobia is most notably and obstacle to getting them to accept the contingent's help, which is what they're there to do,

but there's never an admission of harm from any garleans on the uuuuuuuuh massive amount of war crimes the nations around them are still suffering from they're just kind of like "we misjudged you...but you actually wanted to help us all along" like yeah thats great now can we get you all some deprogramming because you keep talking about returning to your prime and glory days and I think we need to unpack some stuff you really SHOULDNT return to. im not even really talking about EW proper but the patches where things are a bit more chilled out and people are recovering.

It feels like they wanted to have their critique of imperialism and also have things end with the beauty of human connection and reaching out and these things just don't mesh well because hey a lot of your modern day audience is not gonna like having to treat people yelling xenophobic things at the cast and your character with kid gloves after you showed them hours and hours of the awful things these people's beliefs have done. especially in the present day hoo boy.

I'm not too big a Sonknux shipper (I don't really ship anyone with Sonic full stop) but for the sheer amount of Sonadow and rabid Sonadow shippers that popped up, I'm half tempted to create a 2:30 hour long Sonknux cinematic animation out of spite. It would be a quirky romcom with musical scenes which starts with Knuckles first meeting Sonic and ending with them kissing in front of the Master Emerald at their wedding.

i dont really have a problem with sonadow necessarily or people making jokes about them being gay in the new episode, i also went "🏳️‍🌈?" a few times while watching it. im mostly just annoyed that its everywhere at all times and so many people seem to have sonadow as their number one priority always and dont care about anything else.. like if you search sonic prime on here its just sonadow sonadow sonadow with not nearly as many posts about what actually happens in the episode or theorizing about what might happen next or even discussing sonic and shadows interactions beyond just going "omg sonadow!"... like is that really all you guys took from it? you dont care about anything else? just shipping? ok...

for as many complaints as i have about it, i actually do like three houses gameplay, and i think theres a lot of depth to be had what with all the gambits and skills and weapon system (the ability to equip almost all weapons regardless of class is… interesting. i dont think i’d ever want that to return but i wouldnt say i hate it?) makes it really fun to rework as you go through different playthroughs. however one thing that always makes me giggle is seeing gameplay optimization because like. like. dude this game is so fucking easy. “you shouldnt use ashe because hes the worst combat unit in the game” yeah thats true. but do you know what ashe and every other dude has access to? death blow and bows. nothing matters just get to sniping idiot
