I genuinely don't understand why people hate the new season. Spoilers to follow.
To start, the Five and Lila subplot was shit. I won't front - it existing outside of the plot made it easy for me to just act like it didnt happen. Diego and Lila and Five deserved better and it sounds like the actors knew it. But if a bad romance subplot could ruin a whole show, I'd hate a lot more things.
I'm on the fence about Klaus's plot - felt like sidelining him and was questionable. But also a natural part of Klaus's life. Lila had her kids, Allison had Claire, Diego his family, on and on. Klaus's whole life was avoiding being sober and then a huge focus on sobriety. This is his thing. All y'all loved his drugged antics and it gets messy and sad especially when facing it post rock bottom and change.
I see a lot of Ben being unimportant complaints - Ben was always auxilary and a mcguffin there to bond or split the group - Umbrella Ben was a concept, a guilt source, Klaus's conscience, Klaus's id...never a character and dead before the show ever began. Sparrow Ben was literally never part of this family and plot about the family embracing him would have been nice, but him having his own solo quest because he is alone in this world was also fine. Jennifer was a plot device - and in a comic book show about another apocalypse thats not neccessarily a bad thing - especially with a group of dynamic characters I care about on the board.
I see a lot of complaints about the lack of fun villains. What was Sy (I know who was in him but that performance was fun)? Gene and Jean? Those are classic villains that are right up there with the Swedes and the Handler. Hazel & Cha Cha are still standouts but thats not cause these guys sucked.
I see a lot of ending complaints - going from "it was all for nothing" to "it was harmful". If it was harmful for you please be safe and that's a personal decision each time - but also that's media sometimes. It wasn't an irresponisble move like The Magicians or 13 Reasons or other things that just don't consider the audiences needs in order to gain shock value and I don't think they did anything irresponsible with it.
(I am a survivor of unalive attempts, one right after magicians so I get it. And I'm a year sober re: Klaus stuff.)
But, I loved the ending. I don't think it was all for nothing. They saved thier families! They saved everyone! The whole world! Universe! Future and past! Their moms! Hundreds of people who died in their fight to save it, on either side because without the conflict caused by them they're lives were different! I wish the Flash, or Winchesters, or anyone else who keeps ruining lives and causing death and strife sometimes on an apocalypse scale or multiverse timesplit scale had, at literally any point, said "Actually we should value this over my mom/brother/self"...like the scale was apocalyptic. That has a cost. And wow they fixed more than even I hoped. The families? Nice. Hazel and his diner wife are where I got emotional - very nice touch to show everyone.
Why isn't there a kugelblitz? Either the deletion of the timelines and that energy removed the issue Golden Compass style or its a fun comic book show with time assassins and a new element called marigold.. take your pick. It's never been that deep.
The marigolds at the end were probably not thought about as much as anyone on here has. I thought it was just a fun finale goodbye, like getting a bouqet at curtain. I liked that Ben and Lila both had one.
Genuinely confused and had to write to the void and see if I'm alone or crazy. I recommend a lot of people read and watch more media for literacy and stop hoping for plots that are fanservice as they often tank good things and fanfiction and your imagination remain goated, often better, or touch grass and realize the silly fun comic book apocalypse multiverse romp may just be a lil dumb and that's okay...if you read all that I'd love feedback đŠˇ
And I loved so much more than this stuff! Claire being an actualized young adult and loving her uncle and mom and being a teen? Viktor getting the validation he craved. Diego getting his skills and lust for life back. The fucking cut from baby shark to "He's dying" and so many shots/editing/music choices that highlight the dark comedy this show is.

Love me, love my voice - a Cdrama where good things happen to good people
Fair warning - it's the fluffiest fluff that ever fluffed the Earth, so if you crave some drama and violence at the moment, then maybe save this one for later.
The plot of this drama is extremely simple. A university student, going by her second identity online as Sheng Sheng Man, produces/sings traditional style music. Due to a coincidence she gets acquainted with Qiang Qing Ci - a very famous but mysterious voice actor who never shows his face in public, with whom she bonds over a shared passion for good food. And a slow, gentle love story starts from here.
If you are tired of misunderstandings, love triangles, stupid decisions and unnecessary conflicts between your romantic leads; if you want to witness healthy relationships, tight friendships and just an ungodly amount of cuteness - then you came to the right place.
(Also there's a lot of cooking and/or eating delicious food. In every episode. Really, don't watch it when you're hungry, you'll die)
Now, I don't usually read or watch something that has romance at its front and center (though there are always exceptions, albeit rare). But I'm obsessed with Under the Skin, and I loved Word of Honor, so I decided to give Tan Jianci and Zhou Ye a chance for at least one episode, and well - here I am, writing this whole thing after watching the show and then even reading the original novel.
Qiang Qing Ci (or Mo Qing Cheng irl) is a smart and kind man, a doctor, who can cook and has an absolutely gorgeous voice that he uses for good but could use for evil (Tan Jianci could hypnotize people and I wouldn't even mind tbh). How can he work as a doctor and actor simultaneously, you might ask? That's Cdramaland for you, baby! His outer softness doesn't mean that he is completely harmless however. For all of you little freaks out here (myself included), there are some *ahoy!* moments too
Sheng Sheng Man (or Gu Sheng irl) is a girl surrounded by the love of her parents, five slightly overprotective cousins and her friends. She's shy and a bit sheltered, but not stupid, and Zhou Ye's acting makes her character very charming instead of the cringe that is usually associated with this kind of type of girl on screen.
Almost every character there is a good person, and you know, sometimes you just want to see those kinds of people have a great time. They do what they like for a job, fall in love, go on holidays, have friends that are ride or die for them and vice versa. There's no jealousy and backstabbing, all problems are resolved quickly, and everybody can actually COMMUNICATE.
One thing that I'd noticed while watching that surprised me a lot - is how everybody's acting is so relaxed and natural. When they're in a group together, you genuinely believe that all of them are good friends with each other in real life too. The light teasing, interrupting one another while talking, their mutual support and closeness. The actors probably had a lot of fun while filming. And goddamn, it's so good to see it! I'm also insanely jealous.
Music
Traditional music and the profession of voice acting are as much of main characters as our romantic leads are. The way that it was shown was so full of love and respect for the craft and people involved in it, it's amazing.
Despite the simplicity of the plot, there are still moments of heightened emotions, and people there deliver! Their acting shines through especially during the on-stage performances.
That "Swan Song" broke me. I swear, during this whole performance I was bawling my eyes out.
(also insert here a joke about Shen Yi probably being able to recreate Qiang Qing Ci's face based on just his silhouette).
(This is a Night Show in Yangshuo that the characters attend at some point, "Impression Liu Sanjie", an absolutely incredible performance, and I'd pay all the money I don't have to go see it personally)
Side characters (a completely self-indulgent section):
This is a rare Cdrama where there are no annoying side characters. I love them all and would kill anyone who'd think of bothering them even slightly.
These are MuMu (outwardly cold but actually very kind and empathetic) and MoBai (a lovable dumbass), a couple of cosplayers that pop up here and there, and nothing that you say will convince me that they're not together.
(And sure, you can read it as purely platonic friendship between bros, but honestly why would you. Also, I think the creators made a perfect recipe to avoid the wrath of censorship - just get two guys, occasionally make them say that they're single and looking for girls, but then show them always together, and just don't explain anything.) (Watch me finding a subtext even in the straightest show I've watched in years.)
The same goes for singers Fei Shao and Wang Ke, except for they're both bumbasses, and I love them dearly.
Dou Dou Dou Bing, a manager of their recording studio as well as the voice actress, and she's awesome.
Jue Mei Sha Yi, a voice actor, a CEO of his own company and the one that the Viki's live comment section thirsts for A LOT.
Feng Ya Song, a voice actor and a pediatrician as a side gig, and he's cute.
Geng Xiao Xing, a friend of Gu Sheng, works for some app (?) that collaborates with the voice studio. She's also cute and I like her hairstyle.

âYouâre smart. Youâre funny.â Peter continues, his fingers tapping against Wadeâs chest in a comforting metronome.
âYouâre terrifying.â Peter says, and Wade hears his own awe in the words. âIâve never met anyone like you before.â
âIâve never met anyone like you before.â Wade repeats distantly.
It grows silent again; Wade moves his body down so he can press his ear against Peterâs chest, listens for the heart. Peter is stiff underneath him, hands crooked and unmoving over his own.
âIsnât it terrible?â Peter asks very quietly.
Wade wonders what he means; the sound of his heart is grounding, steady. Itâs been years since anyone has let him listen to their heart.
âThe way I feel.â Peter says.
âNo.â Wade never has meant anything more. [atlas]
It's my favorite ending that I've written. I only write unreliable narrators, so this is the first time you really see what Peter actually, genuinely loves and admires about Wade in a way he can't flinch away from. At this point, we only know Wade's insecurities, so the ending is a mirror where Peter is the one being insecure/feeling unworthy of love and Wade is the one who immediately dismisses it. The double meaning of "isn't it terrible, the way I feel?" both his physical body/the intensity of his emotions. The way that Wade feels safe for the first time in the narrative to just exist. Everything I wanted to accomplish with it feels accomplished. It's an ending where I don't feel like there's more of a story to explore. You know what happens to them, you know?
8. Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes youâve written and explain why youâre proud of it.
âI canât be that financially viable.â Peter croaks instead. âLetâs be real here.â
âYouâd be surprised how much a guy is willing to pay to put you in a paper cup and toss you outside the city,â Deadpool responds coldly.
âIâll give you five dollars and a sweet kiss on the cheek if you leave me alone,â Peter says Deadpoolâs face is doubling in his vision, tripling, a whole army of scary clowns.
âIf I showed you my rates I think youâd piss yourself.â Deadpool snorts.
âFive dollars, a sweet kiss on the cheek, and an IOU.â
âHow many legs do you think a spider needs to walk?â Deadpool flicks Peterâs twitching bicep.
âPreferably all of them.â Peter laughs nervously.
âIâve seen them work with one.â Deadpool grabs his knife from his belt and drags the tip slowly across Peterâs costume, the frayed threads snapping in its path and bleeding into a thin, painful line as he makes his way down to his thigh. [it's an acquired taste]
I just love the juxtaposition of Spider-Man being his peppy, banter ready self vs. Deadpool being frustrated that his job is taking too long and is very much ready to kill or maim him for it. It's funny, but it's also like, oh this is going to go south real quick, isn't it? I really like balancing quips with, like, the physical gravity of what is happening, and I think this scene does that well. I also just love the idea of Spider-Man being like "five dollars, a sweet kiss on the cheek, and an IOU" to the mercenary trying to kill him for an unfathomable amount of money.
13. Whatâs the best writing advice youâve ever come across?
You have to write poorly to write well, and you have to write often to write at all.
14. Whatâs the worst writing advice youâve ever come across?
I think any advice around the necessity of a traditional structure. I was taught to write on the basis that every novel needs specific things/character types to be like, a good piece of writing, and that's just not true. It's better to take a seam ripper to tradition, then get bogged down by the patterns of people that aren't you.
22. Choose a passage from one of your earlier fics and edit it into your current writing style. (Person sending the ask is free to make suggestions).
I have been recently re-editing chapter 8 of love-punch because it's the weakest chapter (to me) writing wise. It was also my first published "smut" piece (even though it's not even really that) so you can tell I was a little nervous about my approach. I don't think my style has changed so much as my approach to it. I've taken a lot of descriptions and just let the action or reaction speak for itself. I'm not re-writing it publically, though, so you'll just have to take my word for it.
23. If you were to revise one of your older fics from start to finish, which would it be and why?
I wouldn't! I think they all stand up to my expectations of them. I think the only thing I end up editing is love-punch because due to the multi-chapter structure I don't really get to edit as a completed "piece" so the style, by the nature of time, gets a little dated and needs a brush-up. I also wrote Spider-Man as Spider-man up to like, chapter six or something, so I need to go back and fix that sometime.
38. Talk about a review that made your day.
I got a review the other day on the latest love-punch chapter that quoted my favorite section and said that they had been looking for a fic where Peter uses his super strength against Wade, and that the scene where they wrestle each other in the chapter really fulfilled that for them. It was nice because you don't really get to choose your audience and what your audience likes about your work but when someone reads it likes it for the reasons I, personally, like it always makes me happy. I wrote this because I wanted to read it, so when other people who are looking for the same things find it everything feels so full circle.
39. Do you ever get rude reviews and how do you deal with them?
The rudest review I got was someone asking me why I had to make Peter trans and then when I explained it they complained that I made them switches because they wanted him as a cis-gender bottom. It was infuriating. I'm like, not the most cool-headed person in the world, so I just yelled at them until they were like "wow, you are literally attacking me right now" and then I deleted all of their comments after I cooled down because I didn't want their words to trigger any of my trans readers who were reading my comments. I like yelling at people much more than I like being nice (especially if that's the energy they're putting out - I will match your energy) so I usually get out some aggression until I calm down, and then I usually just delete them. I think that some writers are too nice with their rude reviewers and I like to be a reminder that if you talk shit, I will actually hit you.
I don't get many rude reviews though. I do get comments that trigger the hell out of me because I write a lot of my personal experiences/traumas into my work, and sometimes they'll be like "wow that's so romantic <3" about something that is straight up abusive and that always ruins my day/makes me want to stop writing, but they're not being rude, just romanticizing something I was hoping they wouldn't. My rudest fans are people who want to befriend me/have access to my personal information or life and get upset when I set a very clear "I'm not here to be your friend, and you are not entitled to know anything about me outside what I write" boundary. The majority is very decent to me, though.

Iâm 27 Today! Letâs Talk About How I Write and How Itâs Not What Youâre Expecting
So to get it out of the way: Itâs my birthday today! I donât have any special plans today but I do have plans for Chinese and the D&D movie tomorrow with my family that Iâm excited for. If you want to give me any sort of present, buying my books and leaving reviews on them is sincerely the best thing you can do for me. It is my job after all. But I thought Iâd take today to let you all know what the process of writing looks like for me. After all, I talk a lot about stories, planning, structure, etc. like that. Writing isnât an easy art form, even if technically anyone can writer. Weâre all taught the basics as kids after all. Consuming books can genuinely make you a better writer because youâre exposed to every element of writing with them. I mostly learned writing from the books I read voraciously when I was younger and then cleaned up my style and learned the proper rules of writing through editors. I havenât taken a single college course or the like on creative writing after all. A lot of what I know is from experimentation, extrapolation, etc. like that. But enough of that. Letâs get into my process. So first, naturally, start with concept. What is it I want to write about. Letâs take one of my works I donât talk about as much: Under the Boughs of Love. Its concept was simple: Follow a girl growing up with the help of a living tree and her best friend/first love. Add a troubled family life because this was inspired by Lumischa and you have the base concept. Second, though mostly optional, is style. On a grander level, this could be said to be the point where I decide if a concept is fanfiction or original fiction. How drastic of an AU is often the deciding factor for that though. With this, Iâm actually talking about things like the story being done in a journal style or if itâs going to be first person or third person. For Under the Boughs, I decided to explicitly make the structure be that every year was one chapter. That way it could fulfill the desire of the passing of time while making how much time had passed clear, consistent and also gives it a good, brisk pace that it might not have otherwise. I then figure out what character archtypes are going to work for the story, bare minimum the main character, and then I start writing. This usually can happen within five minutes of forming the concept. Sometimes less if I donât need to use the bathroom or the like. That... Isnât a joke. So understand that Iâve tried making this sort of blog a LOT of times to try and explain how I function as a writer and I always get stuck in that everything Iâm explaining feels very obvious to me. I never get into the weird fact that my brain runs a BILLION MILES AN HOUR. And when I board the train of a concept, itâs going whether I have everything in place or not. And I donât think thatâs wholly bad. One of my biggest strengths as a writer I think is improvisation. That the discoveries I make of characters as I write them donât present obstacles to me but instead opportunities. Letâs take Blair from Rich Witch as an example. She has a bit too blunt of an introduction in my opinion and the crueler parts of her personality come out before much of anything else. This actually fits thematically with Azu but the question becomes to me: Why? Why does my brain demand she be so aggressive from go? And so thereâs a chapter spent having the characters ask her that and so we get to explore a side character and what the training that had them isolated for three months did to their brain and how theyâre kind of having to adjust. Rather than make the incongruity be a problem, I ask how I can use it to my advantage. How can I world build with it, what are the storytelling opportunities I can come up with it and what am I learning about my own perception of a character with it? Not to say I donât plan at all. I might start a story with minimally a plan but that can work more than fine for a chapter or two and especially for a one off where you donât need much more of a plan than the concept. Itâs just that I can start with very little and the planning I do do? Itâs all kept in my brain as I ruminate over the larger moments Iâll be going for. Consider what I just wrote and what I can do with it. Consider what the larger story I want to tell. But a lot of it is built off of what I discover in the early stages of writing a story as much as any other part.
Itâs where I get my statement that I have âgood instinctsâ. This ESPECIALLY is true in regards of themes. Iâve bullshitted my way through claiming themes for my stories for a long time but thatâs not a part of my planning or my core writing style. It wouldnât even make sense with my goals. Because my goal as a writer, above ANYTHING else, is to just give a coherent, enjoyable story. If itâs deep and can be considered some grand piece of art: Cool. But I donât give a shit. My goal is to make the stories I want to make and hope that someone else enjoys it too. Themes and the like are entirely secondary to me than that. Thereâs only one of my works, especially that Iâm proud of, thatâs different and thatâs Crises Girlfriends. And, frankly, it wasnât so much a theme as a demand from my personal experiences. The story could not have love be what cured the twoâs mental health problems. I did not want to perpetuate that dangerous story telling crutch if I was going to make something inspired by my personal journey. Love can support, it can help, but it is not the cure. Does that mean I changed my planning style so as to make sure the therapy lessons were geared for them? Or that I went hard into how to make it so that the two girls had mental health issues that played into that concept? Nope. Their mental health issues are rooted in their characters. In fact, besides the archtype fitting for a story, I donât explicitly make sure their whole being revolves around how useful it is to the plot. This is where a lot of that discovery aspect comes into play. The plot informed their archtype, their attitude informs the flavor of their help in the plot, that flavor informs shifts in others, interactions, etc. like that, even to the point where a chapter may entirely change because my brain just goes âNah man. That just isnât going to fly with these characters.â It literally stopped there from being a sex scene in one of my erotica books. Thatâs not a joke either. One of my erotica works has fan service and the like but the sex scene gets called out as not being sincere, as being manipulative, and the dude goes âI am all for a booty call but I want to know the girl is going to be into it as well. I can tell youâre not so Iâm going back to bed.â That was explicitly not the plan but the ramifications of that one moment where I couldnât justify the sex rippled into the second and third books in The Daughters of Dusk series. Now I could stop here and be like âAnd this is what makes me such an oddball author and analyst,â but if youâve read my analytical blogs, you know Iâm not willing to be unfair. Both sides need to be accounted for. And letâs face it, Iâm not perfect. Iâve made bland characters. Iâve had to sidestep a plot issue Iâve put in front of myself. While I think my style works 90% of the time, thereâs one moment in Rich Witch which haunts me because it feels like a betrayal of Azuâs powers that shouldnât be there and itâs in the FIRST CHAPTER. Not that itâs technically impossible or the like but that itâs not something I would have done had I cared more about the rules of her magic at the time.
Hell, I have an entire BOOK scrapped because I didnât like how awkward and janky it ended up being, I do try to do some amount of personal quality control after all. I also work alone though mostly so, you know... Itâs hard to always catch the mistakes but I havenât found anyone in a long time I can rely on giving me feedback on my works, especially in any sort of timely manner. And I donât have the money to hire an editor or proofreader.
And... Well, if it sounds like a mind that can work so fast is nothing but a good thing, I have bad news for you. See... What do I do about my negative thoughts? My brain races so much that I constantly am distracting myself so I donât have to think. So my depression and anxiety donât eat me alive. Itâs why Iâm disabled. Worse yet is that only a couple days ago, talking to my therapist, did I finally realize that my biggest trigger as a person is engaging honestly with my emotions. I donât react well ANYTIME I think about how Iâm feeling. Happy or sad. Thatâs a problem when my style of writing ONLY works by engaging my hyper analytical brain with my emotional brain. I canât write without those two functioning properly or else I donât connect with the characters as Iâm supposed to. It all becomes very functional and it takes so much more work on my part to put anything down, especially if Iâm not trying to forget mannerisms or reactions. Itâs a struggle Iâm still grappling with. That Iâve fought with myself for eight years now and I donât really know when itâs going to change. Until the day it does though, thank you all for continuing to support and listen to me. It means the world to me and I wish I gave you all back more than I do because of it. That I showed you all the stories I have in my mind rather than hiding away as I usually do. But I am also only twenty seven. I have a long time to find the healthy way for me to return to whoever it was who was able to write eight thousand words, minimum, a day for over two months a couple years ago. Until then, know I never forget a story and Iâll keep sharing what wisdom Iâve learned so long as youâre all interested in it. ========= I have a public Discord for any and all who want to join!

Why did you even watch Mrs. Maisel if you hated it so much? I read your long post about it and you look at every single thing that happened in like the worst possible light. youâre allowed to have your own opinion, Iâm just confused about why you watch five seasons of the show when you didnât even like the main character. I did like her. Yes, her stand-up made me laugh. ďżźYes, she made a lot of bad choices, thatâs what made her so interesting. She didnât want to be with Joel but she didnât want to be without him, either. Relationships in real life are more like that; not always able to be put in a box, not always easily defined. Anyway, I donât have the energy to point every single point you put in your email. I loved the ending of the show, cried most of the way through the last episode, and I hadnât seen anything about it on Tumblr so I decided to search the tag and Iâm pretty bummed to find this post to be honest.
Hey thank you so much for asking! This is the first real engagement I've gotten on tumblr so far so I'm actually super excited to hear from you even though you didn't love what I had to say. I definitely did come down hard on the show, but I honestly didn't even realize how strongly I felt about a lot of those things until I started writing because, as I mentioned, I did feel entertained throughout the entire series and found it hilarious on the whole- just not Midge herself. The thing that frustrated me the most about Midge throughout the series was that there never seemed to be any lasting repercussions for any of her mistakes or acknowledgement from her or the show that her flaws are, in fact, flaws.
The way a show ends carries a lot of weight for me and I try to reserve judgement about a show until it's over because I want to give it the benefit of the doubt until then that it's heading toward a destination that will resolve the loose ends I've noticed along the way. Seeing Maisel end the way it did really affirmed all the reservations I'd had when I had really been holding out hope that her character would instead grow and develop in some way.
I totally agree with you about Joel, too! I mentioned that before this season I thought they had a really admirable and unique post-divorce friendship, I just thought this season veered into the possessive and toxic and it seemed clear that Joel was still in love with her. The things Midge does and doesn't tolerate from men throughout the series is, in my opinion, inconsistent and sending mixed messages about what treatment is appropriate toward women.
I'm also a huge Gilmore Girls fan and love so much about Amy Palladino's writing style that so much of the show was genuinely super enjoyable to me. It's how much potential it had that left me disappointed. Secondary characters can also absolutely save a show in my opinion- I thought Abe was absolutely incredible, and all the parents made me laugh hard every time they were on screen. This would certainly not be the only show that I was carried through in its entirety by side characters more likable than the main (you might not be thrilled about what I have to say about Frasier either).

The class of 2022 cont.
Hustle - Jeremiah Zagar
So Michael Bay has a recognizable authorial style, and turns out so does the Happy Madison team. Here are some qualities of a basic Adam Sandler movie--the main character at the center is beloved, the jokes are aimed at someone elseâs expense but are mostly harmless, the villain gets punished in a silly way, and the hero wins. Hustle is essentially an Adam Sandler movie, but the heat is turned down to a cool temp suitable for adults, and it largely works. Even more than the basketball, which made me want to sign up for League Pass, the best part is the man himself. In a lot of his worst movies the Sandman is playing the pinnacle of his version of cool and living in a universe in which everyone agrees. Here heâs traded that for a world weariness and a self deprecation that fits his age and stage of life. I credit this to the Safdies.
The Invitation - Jessica M. Thompson
Just easily the dumbest movie of the year, which honestly is heartwarming in an era when most movies feel like competently made assembly-line product. Naming the type of movie this is would be a spoiler, but suffice to say the twist actually makes this bad flick even worse. The dialogue is harder to sit through than any of the scary stuff. Watch it with six beers and have a great time.
The Eternal Daughter - Joanna Hogg
First off, this film looks like it was made in the 1970s. Itâs not just the granular camera, its the way the soundtrack presents itself and the way its shot, with closeups and zoom ins on characters to emphasize certain moments. There are, I think, five actors in this movie, playing six characters, and two are only in it for a couple minutes. Itâs very quiet and not much happens. The director lets the eerie and genuinely anachronistic tone sheâs come up with linger for minutes at a time on scenes of Tilda Swinton staring at a mirror or typing on a laptop or talking on the phone or walking her dog, which is probably the main reason to cast Tilda Swinton. Nobody in Hollywood has a more interesting face or can hold the camera while doing nothing quite like her. There are ideas about memory and daughterhood sprinkled throughout, and the house-turned-hotel is at least a little bit haunted, but the main idea doesnât come through until the end, and thatâs when everything you just watched clicks into place. Iâm so happy Iâve been keyed into Joanna Hogg. This is better than most movies Iâve seen lately.
Crimes of the Future - David Cronenberg
How in the hell did he get $27 million dollars to make this? I donât know how much love Neon thinks David Cronenberg conjures, but I read it made about $4.5 million globally and that actually sounds like a win. I really like the way Cronenberg makes movies. The stakes in this are low, thereâs not much by way of inciting incident or plot. He sets up a weird world and has people interact with each other in a way that feels surprisingly safe and warm, like theyâre all from the same tribe, and then creates a behind-the-scenes menace that keeps the story on edge. This movie looks decrepit and colorless in a way that suggests a fallen society, and the overt body horror stuff is, I guess a high point for people who like that kind of thing. The characters know more about the world than the viewer ever does. All that said, I was slightly disappointed in this. I think the idea is that some time in the near future humans are evolving into the next stage of development in what is otherwise a static and decayed society, but I never found this particularly clear or got into it enough to roll with it. Its a great three-quarters of a genuinely new piece of world building, but, in my opinion, it never gets all the way there.
The Wonder - Sebastian Lelio
A weirdly grody, unpretty movie. Itâs shot in houses that look molded out of blobby green clay and Irish countryside that looks like arid purple coral. This has to be a choice, and I think a better movie could have brought out the inner mechanics of a small Irish town decimated by famine in the 1860s and coping with it in ways that are overtly harmful and seeded in a hermetic and impenetrable culture. Instead its more of an outsiderâs takedown of a small, sad community given over to Catholic beliefs the movie outright states are false superstitions. The voice of reason is a British character, which feels particularly mean given how present the Potato Famine is to the story. Oh wow, I think I just talked myself into hating this.
Blonde - Andrew Dominik
Once upon a time a director took a giant shit on the floor and then looked you in the eye and said âI bet you canât deal with this!â The main character has no agency or personality or history, is dragged through sequence after sequence of gratuitous torture that is simpleminded beyond any plausible biography of Marylin Monroe, while the film congratulates itself for its own truth-telling like it just solved 21st century artistic mediocrity and also world hunger. Itâs as factually unreliable as Elvis and a hundred times more proud of itself. This might be the worst movie Iâve ever seen.
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story - Eric Appel
A couple of jokes I really like here: Young Al Yankovic sneaking out of his parentsâ house to a polka party, Dr. Demento hosting a Jack Horner-style poolside hangout where the vice of choice seems to be PG-rated jokes, the third act veering into a completely different movie just because it would be fun to do and because Walk Hard didnât think of it. Here we have the Weird Al aesthetic converted quite naturally to film; itâs basically a Funny or Die sketch spread to movie length, but the tone--knowingly silly, not really mocking anyone, a little violent, earnestly weird in the way a child could love--is the type of Al shit youâll recognize immediately if you grew up a fan. Another thing I thought is that I canât even name the last time a big broad comedy like this came out. This movie is stuffed to capacity full of non-Apatow troupe comic actors--Patton Oswalt, Conan OâBrien, Jack Black, Will Forte, Rainn Wilson, Demetri Martin, I could keep going--and I realized those people have been showing up a lot less lately because no one is making movies for them anymore.Â
The Cathedral - Ricky DâAmbrose
A very impressionistic, sort of fascinating movie about a family of mediocrities with a certain amount of and relationship to money. The camera and by the extension the story lingers on the most ordinary parts of life--a 40+ second scene of a guy removing painterâs tape from a wall is a representative sample shot--to make the whole business of life seem boring and mundane, like the story of a single family as told by a blurb in a history textbook. Essentially this is a movie about a failure and the son he raised, who will turn out in some way that hasnât been written yet (presumably he goes on to make this movie). Thereâs a chilling inter-family feud somewhere in here, but mostly these people are regular, and small, and ultimately unlovable. Itâs one of the more interesting films Iâve watched from this year, and the only reason I donât rate it higher is because Iâm not sure how much of the static impressionism was dictated by its budget, which couldnât have been higher than mid-six figures. I canât tell if some of the ideas are choices or limitations.
Aftersun - Charlotte Wells
Wow. What a sad, beautiful movie. A dad and his preteen daughter take a resort vacation in Turkey that neither of them want to end. Paul Mescal--unknown to me before this--is sad and soulful without ever really explaining anything about himself. I donât have much more to say. This isnât one I want to dig into. I just loved it.
Causeway - Lila Neugebauer
A perfectly nice movie about two people treading water above something dark and difficult under the surface who find each other and help each other, maybe forever. Brian Tyree Henry really is a good actor and sort of steals this from the one time world conquering star. More movies should take place in New Orleans, a photogenic and objectively amazing city.Â
Sick - John Hyams
I choose to believe this is a movie about how the mask scolds were the biggest monsters of all.
Decision to Leave - Park Chan-wook
Headless voice recordings, images and language looping around and over each other, shots that serve as wordless exposition, visual and audio ideas that expand the story and explore its ideas. This is the best directed movie of the year. Imagine how good Bardo would be if Inarritu had Chan-wookâs facility with cinematic storytelling. Plenty of movies are competently made. Some even expertly so. But itâs a rare thing to see something so creatively inspired. Every decision he makes is not only interesting in its own right, but serves the final product. It doesnât even really matter what the story is. I donât know who else you could really say that about. Add another director to the canon.
The Batman - Matt Reeves
The only thing the young left hates more than grievous white men is conservative cops, so how many more reboots before they make Batman the villain? Why do we keep rebooting this movie? You had a good idea last time, man.
Happening - Audrey Diwan
I hate to compare the two most overtly feminist films of the year, but I see a lot of overlap between this and Women Talking. Both focus on dealing with the immediate issue in front of them rather than getting polemic about how shitty everything is (Blonde, easily the worst movie of 2022, prostrates on the ground to show you how much it hates the sins of men, while these two movies just solve their problems.) Happening doesnât lose sight for one second about what its about--the main character never stops to reconsider her options, doesnât waiver from her mission for even a single minute. It kind of diminishes the movieâs effect as a movie, but itâs a strong and effective way to make its own political point, which is, I think: The system was not built for us, letâs deal with that the way we have to.
Living - Oliver Hermanus
Bill Nighy taps into the high class you assume comes as naturally to him as charm does to Matt Damon, but heâs more reserved and sublimated here than youâd expect. The same is true of the movie, which is smaller and grimmer than its title or plot description suggests it will be. Rather than go on a quest for the meaning of happiness, a lifelong bureaucrat whoâs lifeâs ambition was to be a part of the genteel British background takes a look at life and decides the best thing he can do with his short time left on earth is his job, because the ship has sailed on everything else. The camerawork and score are a little fussy--it is mid-century England--but its a surprisingly good looking film.
Smile - Parker Finn
This could have and should have been better, but plotwise he sticks to a script--this is basically the Ring--the thematic stuff is Horror Movie plug-in shit, and its not that scary. Thereâs a scene where the demon thatâs haunting the lead appears in her house and physically corners her against the wall, and then the movie cuts away to the next day. What the fuck is that?! We paid to see the goods!
Stars at Noon - Clair Denis
Thereâs a richness here most movies donât possess. This was an interesting one, and Iâm not sure I got everything, but I have some takes. Like a lot of 2022 movies, Covid is a presence here, but the way characters take on and off their masks feels methodical. The movie has a breezy cool that reminded me of Soderbergh. The soundtrack is loose and jazzy, its naturalistic and unmannered, and it finds details and stories everywhere. A scene where a group of boaters is casually murdered and robbed by bandits is shot and then forgotten--just one of the hundreds of bizarre little things she comes across. The setting is Nicaraguaâs turbulent political situation, which is responsible for the overriding sense of danger and is the locus at the center that dictates every decision the characters make. My only problem with this movie is that the love story at its center is the least interesting thing about it. The two leads never really seem to find any reason to care about each other, and while Margaret Qualley of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood fame is doing something genuinely interesting--she flits and floats around in rock bottom without any inhibition at all--their scenes together never really cohere. Except one. Iâd be remiss if I didnât mention there is one scene between them that works quite well.
Petit Maman - Celine Sciamma
Double bill this with Aftersun. Where that movie was about the impossibility of connecting with your parents at their level, this one is a fantasy about what would happen if you actually could. At a cool 73 minutes itâs so slight it threatens to blow away in the wind, but itâs sweet and tender. I was going to call it delicate, but itâs actually pretty hardy, the way most kids actually are.
Benediction - Terence Davies
The positives: the screenplay. Some of the best dialogue of the year. One thing Iâm a very big fan of is directors using the tools of their medium to try to reflect the abstract brilliance of great work in other mediums. This doesnât exactly do this--cinematically it tops out at Sassoon reciting his poems over photos of WWI battles--but its a movie about a writer trying to hunt out languageâs absolute truth told using absolutely some of the sharpest and most direct dialogue youâll find in a film. Jack Lowden is phenomenal as the lead--serious and direct and intelligent and sincere. This movie should have gotten no brainer Best Actor and Best Screenplay nominations that my mom rooted for except this type of Cradle to Grave Great Difficult Man biopic seems to be a few years past its prime in an Oscar era when the runaway favorite is the racoon in the chefâs hat movie. This is clearer and more direct than all but the very best of its kind. When the main character is curdled and vicious at the end of his life, you know exactly why, rather than it looking like the blurred strains of a movie filling in itâs subjectâs final Wikipedia section, like most of these do. The negative is that the second half is slow as hell. This is a good movie, maybe a great movie, but itâs not for me at all.
Saint Omer - Alice Diop
Add my name to the ring of people who took issue with the framing device. The story here is true crime event where a detached and isolated African immigrant in France has an affair with an older white man and then murders the child they conceive. Itâs a stranger than fiction tale that would warrant its own New Yorker issue, with the moral that people are weird and life is murky and huge. But I guess the powers that be didnât think this was enough of a film, or maybe it just wasnât the story Alice Diop wanted to tell, so the movie hangs its central plot around another story about a pregnant African journalist whoâs observing the trial and scared of how much she finds herself relating to the defendant. The movie does as well as it can merging these two stories, and comes up with some pretty interesting ideas, but it never fully feels like it isnât something tacked on--it never feels organic. Even so, I liked this a lot. Its simple to the point of feeling like docufiction, but in doing so lets the story and its characters get deep. It doesnât judge or make statements at all, and itâs got great colors--yellows and tans and blues.
Armageddon Time - James Gray
This seems, to me, to be James Gray using facts of his biography to tell a story about how different tribes in America play the various hands theyâre dealt to try to achieve whatever their version of survival or success is. If plenty of other movies have looked at the same theme, only Widows, a personal favorite, comes to mind as doing it as well. They say the more personal you make something the more universal it becomes, and while Iâm not sure how specific this movie is to its creatorâs life, it gets at so many sociological truths without ever feeling like more than a personal memory. The family at the center has achieved enough comfort to begin to look outside of itself, but lives, or at least thinks it lives, in a precarious peace that can be taken away at any moment, which colors every decision it makes. A scene at the end where Jeremy Strongâs tough loving father tells his son the ugly truth about what the point of it all is is one of the better scenes of the year. I was not prepared for this movie to be as good as it was.Â

Even when Harry was little, heâd known heâd have an odd path in life. Just because it was odd, didnât mean itâd be bad, but it would make him absolutely stand out in the crowd. Â Â Â Â When Y/N was young she didnât see herself having any extraordinary adventures. Sure, sheâd travel and explore the world with its secrets, but she didnât have any plans to draw the attention of the masses. That was until Harryâd come into her life. Â Â Â Â They were both young, still kids in that tender age where childhood crossed into teenage years, when they met. For Harry, it was like one of those scenes in the movies where the pretty girl walks into a room and a billion fans make her hair look like the wind is sweeping through it, and her eyes glisten like gemstones. Also known as the 'love at first sight' scene. Â Â Â Â For Y/N, it was hard to keep her breakfast down as she walked inside the classroom, twenty pairs of scrutinous eyes on her, trying to figure out if the new girl was a predator or prey. Â Â Â Â Luckily for Y/N, the biology teacher wasnât a total witch and didnât make her present herself to the class, and just pointed to the free seat next to a curly-haired boy. Luckily for Harry, that free seat was right next to him. Â Â Â Â With a sigh, she dropped her heavy backpack beside the chair, giving the boy a shy glance, and was surprised to see a genuine and large grin right back at her. It wasnât the kind people gave when they had bad thoughts. It was the kind people gave when they were truly excited and wanted to give a good impression. Y/Nâs chest grew warm at the thought she might actually make a friend that day. And she did. Â Â Â Â âIâm Harry.â He extended his hand for her to take, the grin never leaving his face. Â Â Â Â She gave him a big, relieved smile. âIâm Y/N.â Â Â Â Â Ever since then they were not only lab partners in classes they shared (which was biology, physics and math), but also in mischief. Together they managed to enrage Anne, annoy Gemma and absolutely horrify Y/M/N, and whenever one went down, the other made sure to go down as well. Â Â Â Â So when a few years down the line, Harry had told Y/N about his idea to audition for X-factor she wasnât surprised one bit. Â Â Â Â âI mean, as long as you donât trip and break your nose on stage, youâll be fine.â Â Â Â Â For that, she received a slap on her arm from him. Â Â Â Â âIâm just saying!â Y/N defended herself. âYouâre great at singing, Mrs Aberdeen certainly thinks so, you donât have two complete left feet, and youâre alright to look at.â Â Â Â Â That for the first time since the decision and application had been submitted, made Harry smile. He loved how easily Y/N was able to lighten the mood, to take his thoughts away from the bad, and just erase them with her wit and smile.
    âBesides.â She nudged his shoulder with hers and then intertwined their fingers. âI, Gem and our Mums will be right there for you. Wonât even blink until the end of the performance.â     With how her insides trembled in excitement and fear for her best friend, it truly seemed to Y/N she hadnât blinked at all on that fateful day. Her breath hitched when the judges were talking. She couldnât even remember what they said, all of it turning into white noise.     And then he got through, and Y/N screamed so much she was sure sheâd blown out Anneâs eardrums, and had hugged Harry so tightly she was afraid sheâd broken a rib. But with his victory also came a fear, because, for the first time in Y/Nâs life, she was terrified as to where sheâd stand in Harryâs. Since day one itâd been secure, but now, with the newfound fame of X-factor and who knows what kind of an amazing future, she didnât know if heâd throw her to the curb, simply forget about the mundane friend from high school or maybe use her for something.     But it wasnât like that. Not one bit. After insane hours of rehearsals, Y/N was one of the three people he always called. It was her, his Mum and Gem. Always. And he loved to listen to her speaking of what was happening at school, how the lessons were, which teacher turned out to be hooking up with which. As much as Harry knew he was made for the extraordinary, he loved the ordinary Y/N brought in his life. She was his safe harbour. But what he never agreed with were her own thoughts she was meant for a simple life, so he took it upon himself to bring a little bit of eccentricity in hers, as he explained how heâd gotten united into a band with four other boys, now going by âOne Directionâ, and it was his mission to join his newfound friends with the most important friend he'd had.     âThis is Y/N,â Harry introduced her to the guys after one of their late-night practices, one where they werenât being filmed. âIf you do anything that even mildly upsets her, Iâll kill you in your sleep.â     The slap against his arm made him let out an âOw!â while the rest of the boys laughed and welcomed her with open arms.     In a weird way, Y/N became part of the band. She didnât sing or play any instruments, but she was always around, gave her input on songs and setlists. That kind of closeness made all of the fears and doubts about losing a place in Harryâs life disappear. She was his personal hype-man while at the same time knocked him down a few pegs whenever the fame started to get to his head.     She was there for his highs and lows, for the break-ups and break-off in the band, and watched as he ventured into a solo career as much as she could with school and all, but when summer break rolled around it was like Harry couldn't get rid of her even if he tried. Not that he wanted. Sharing the success and happiness with his best friend was one of the biggest rewards he could have.     And Y/N would never admit it because itâd boost Harryâs already elephant-like ego, at least thatâs what she said, but she kind of liked the attention she received because of him, especially because most of it was pleasant.     Had she been terrified that being known as Harry Styles best friend would make people think she was just a gold-digger, seeking fame and leeching it off from him? Yes. And there were people like that. But ninety-five percent of what people said on her social media accounts was actually nice, some even said âthank youâ that there was a person like her in Harryâs life to keep things real, and most importantly â cared about him through it all.     Harry also saw those comments; he loved to read about how people saw just how much Y/N cared, and it kind of stirred something in him. He didnât know when exactly, but it was around the age of twenty-four for him and twenty-three for Y/N when he started looking at his friend in a different light. And it bloody terrified him. He didnât know if she felt the same, and the thought of putting his heart on the line like that only for the possibility of it being crushed was the scariest thing ever.     He did, however, have an inclination as to what incident had prompted them to surface. The feelings that were. It was a night after a party. Y/N was on winter break from her masterâs at uni, which meant he used every opportunity to spend time with her.     The hangover was real, I mean itâs what you got by mixing vodka, tequila and beer into an empty Sprite bottle and chugging it. Harry stumbled over sleeping bodies on his way to the kitchen in search for some leftover pizza he was sure he and Y/N in their drunkenness had ordered, as well as to make two cups of black coffee. He knew she hated the taste, but cold junk food and bitter coffee always did the trick with her. That was when heâd found her.     Although heâd woken up in Y/Nâs room, she hadnât been next to him. Instead, as it turned out, sheâd gone on a food search sometime before him and had passed out on the couch, a Cookie Monster onesie on her body, but most importantly his signature pearls around her neck. And one of her hands even rested against her collarbone, as if scared someone would take them away from her.     Thatâd been the first time his heart had flipped in his chest at the sight of her, but most definitely not the last.     He did however keep this change in his emotions to himself. He wasnât really sure what it was, so it would be unfair to dump that on Y/N and have her figure it out for him because he didnât know where she stood on her own, let alone do the work for him.     Luckily, despite the tornado of feelings, their friendship didnât falter, and when his Vogue cover came out, he was incredibly nervous for people to see it, but especially for those who mattered the most to him, like his Mum, sister and Y/N. Especially Y/N, for her opinion had become the most important one outside his blood relatives. After all, all his thoughts went to â if we dated, would she be as proud of me as she was of me as a friend?     Her support meant the most because he was away in the middle of filming; he had no way of getting physical comfort, so all of the messages, calls, social media posts and FaceTimes was the world to him, especially when Y/N sent a picture of herself with three copies of the magazine, two beside her head as she laid on her bed and one clutched to her chest, which she also posted on Instagram with the caption âCanât hug you for real right now, so this will have to do. When I do get to you @harrystyles, Iâll crush your ribs with my love. And that is a threat.â     Then the comments came in from the rest, and one stood out more than the others.     Bring Back Manly Men.     At first, he felt odd about it. It didnât really bother him, but at the same time, it made him sad. He knew that he was seen as somewhat of a controversial figure, as he painted nails, wore frilly blouses and now full-on dresses, which were all typically categorized as feminine things, but he never understood why a nail colour or the shape of a shirt suddenly became exclusively for just one gender. Which is why he was so grateful to have Y/N in his life.     âI mean, anatomically speaking, men should be wearing dresses and women trousers. Itâs you who have all the dangly bits,â she said through a bite of food. âThe Scots have been onto it since the beginning.â     Harry threw his head back in a laugh, shifting an arm behind his head. âSo I assume your favourite pic is the one in the kilt?â     âWell, it did remind me of that awful punk phase I had back in school with all those safety pins, only in a more tasteful way, but no. My favourite one is you in that brown, grey off-shoulder jacket thing.â     âWhy?â     Y/N wiggled her brows at him. âShows enough of your cleavage but leaves enough for imagination.â     âOf fucking course.â Harry snorted, shaking his head. âObjectifying much?â     âWhat? Iâm not going to deny that my best friend is a sexy beast.â     He wouldnât say it out loud, but when she called him her friend, it made his heart clench in a painful way. Harry had been trying to be a bit flirtier around her, but given his open nature as it was, Y/N hadnât seemed to notice it, nor had she seemed to notice how he looked at her while she was frowning at her computer screen.     Harryâd had relationships with some women who could be considered the most beautiful in the world, but if heâd had to say, in his opinion, whoâd receive that title, itâd be Y/N. The way she snorted when she laughed too hard, the way small crow lines had already appeared next to her eyes from how much she smiled and the way her forehead creased when she was concentrating. It enthralled him to no end. He could read her lifeâs story on her face, how sheâd lived and thought and experienced, unlike so many people he met who couldnât move a muscle.     Though the reason she was so concentrated in that moment was because thousands of people had tagged her in a tweet of a woman, sheâd heard of for the first time in her life (because Harry had been trying to keep that one off her radar), and what she saw made all the blood boil in her body more than any other hate comment had.     Without hesitation, Y/N atted her and tweeted âBring back manly men. Please! Millions of people would let him raw them WHILE WEARING THE DRESS. I mean you tried, so Iâll give you the gold star you so desperately want, but that was pathetic.â     At that same moment, a notification popped up on the screen of Harryâs phone. He only had notifications on for one person, and when he saw what was written, he gasped, looking at Y/N. âYou did not just do that!â     âWhat?â Y/N shrugged biting down on the chocolate bar sheâd been savouring for the last half hour of their conversation. âI just said what everyone was thinking. Besides what the fuck does âbring back manly menâ even mean? Go chop some wood? Fight a bear in the Siberian woods? Have your âfriendsâ stab you to death at a political meeting?â     âYouâre a menace.â     Y/N winked popping the last bit of the chocolate in her mouth. âOnly to those who dare go for the people I love.â     His heart fluttered at the last word, but all he could do was mask it with a large grin and shake of his head.     For another hour they spent talking, Y/N kept hyping Harry up, tried to get as many plot details of the movie he was filming, while he avoided as many spoilers as possible and attempted to steer the conversation somewhere else, but when that happened, Y/N jumped onto his music, which he had told her all about. In fact, there wasnât a music video made without her approval, and neither would his next one be. âYouâll fly out to see me film for âTreat People With Kindnessâ, right?â     Y/N sighed, giving him a sad smile. She hated disappointing Harry. âIâd love to. But you know with everything going on, I donât think Iâll be able to.â     âPhoebe Waller-Bridge will be in it.â     She gasped, in real excitement. âWell, why didnât you say so from the start?!â     âSo thatâs what this friendship has come to. Iâm just your gateway to celebrities?â     âHarry youâve always been just my gateway to the people living in LaLa Land.â But she let out a small breath much like sheâd done before. âI really do want to come, Harry. You know that; I miss you like crazy. But Phoebe or no Phoebe, I donât think I can.â     Harry bit his lip nodding, but he still needed to try one more time. âIs there anything I can say or do to get you here?â     âGet me a private jet and a quarantine mansion?â     âDeal.â     âWoah! Wait!â Y/N pretty much jumped up from her position in bed. âThat was a joke! Harry Edward Styles, I swear to God, if you try an ââ     But with a giant grin, he just blew Y/N a kiss and ended the call.     She was quite terrified if she was being honest, that Harry would do what sheâd asked. He already had once. It'd been around Christmas time while she was still in First Year at uni, and sheâd seen a glistening necklace at a jewellery store display. She hadnât said anything, hadnât even uttered a word, but just seeing the sparkle in Y/Nâs eyes, was enough for Harry to make the decision and gift it for her.     When the next day, around five AM her time, she got a call from Harryâs manager Jeff, she was ready to rip both of them a new one, an e-mail with a plane ticket popping up in her inbox.     âI swear Iâll poison your drinks when I see you,â sheâd grumbled, but couldnât hide the excitement as she threw everything she could in the suitcase. âAnd no one will find your bodies, mark my words, Azoff.â     He snorted. âYeah, tell that to the FBI agent listening in on this call.â     âFuck. Gave myself away,â she said softly, giggling right after.     âYou know heâs stoked beyond belief.â Jeff piped up. âHe literally jumped out of the bed this morning, and during the dance rehearsals he didnât miss a step.â     That made Y/Nâs heart warm. âWell, you can tell him to curb it a bit. Otherwise, Iâll just stay at the fucking mansion â which, by the way, it was a joke, Jeff! Iâm pissed enough heâs spending money on me as it is, let alone such a chunk on the plane, you didn't have to get me an actual mansion.â     âYou know, for you, heâd give away all of it.â     âYes, well, he might need it for his funeral, if he keeps spending it on me and on shit like this.â     The man shook his head but didnât say anything else. He wasnât the only one trying to drop hints to Y/N that Harry felt something more, but heâd leave it to the man himself. He didnât need to possibly ruin everything, and have her decide not to come. His client was nightmare enough without her around, because Harry was like day and night when Y/N finally arrived on set for âTreat People With Kindnessâ.     To say he enveloped her in a hug would be an understatement as he didnât let go of her for ten solid minutes, having grabbed her by the underside of the thighs and sat down on the ground just so he could prolong the feeling of being with Y/N.     The fact that sheâd actually gone for it and hadnât scolded Harry too much for spending that insane amount of money, for having brought a small piece of home to LA with herself where they were filming, made him now fully acknowledge the true extent of his feelings, especially as she didnât pull away from their embrace, rather hid her face in the crook of his neck.     I mean, in the end, he did have to let her go because everyone had to get back to shooting, but not before Y/N had stripped the meticulous jacket from him, and went to have a glance at herself in the large mirror, one of the costume designers playing along and adjusting the clothing on her body, as if she was going to be the one performing.     Harry felt someone slide up to him and he looked over to his left, a smiling Phoebe standing there. She nudged his shoulder with hers. âYouâre in love with her, arenât you?â     He nodded, looking back over to where Y/N was still looking at herself in the mirror, wearing the heavy jacket as if it was nothing like it was made for her. âIâm a clichĂŠ, I know. But I canât help it.â     âOf course, you can.â She squeezed his side. âAll you gotta do is tell her.â     But it wasnât that easy. Comparatively, getting Y/N to appear in the video was easier than coming to terms with the fact, all theyâd ever remain would be friends if he didnât do anything.     Yet the shoot for the video ended as quickly as it had started, and Y/N needed to fly back to the UK to defend her PhD paper, and Harry had to go back to filming âDonât Worry Darlingâ, thousands of miles stretching between them once more. And Harry was a romantic, he couldnât confess over FaceTime. Besides, he wanted to make it a special evening for her, plan something out, rather than risk a shitty connection cutting him off mid-word.     He hated it though. Itâd been almost four years since Harry had realised his feelings had developed from just friendly into romantic, and still, he hadnât said anything. Even the people whoâd never met Y/N in person like Florence Pugh saw what was going on.     But unlike the cast and crew of âTreat People With Kindnessâ who had to deal with his pining for maybe a couple of weeks, itâd been almost half a year for her at that point. Did she just want to call Y/N and tell her how Harry felt? Sure. Sheâd had enough of him coming into her trailer only to fall down onto her pillow and whine. But it wasnât her place. So instead, she was going to figure out a way to get Y/N to the set and make him tell her himself.     Getting Harryâs phone away from him shouldâve been the inspiration to the next âMission Impossibleâ script though, because it took her literally a whole day to fish it out from his coat's pocket, and she only had about ten seconds to find Y/Nâs number (which wasnât that hard given how it was the number with literally hundreds of calls next to it) and put it in her own phone.     Once their filming was done for the day, Florence rebutted Harryâs invitation to a movie night, saying a massive headache was coming on, so he wished her a good night and with slumped shoulders went to sulk on his own. Which is why she practically sprinted to her own trailer to finally call Y/N     An unsure âhello?â greeted her ears before she responded. âHey, this is Florence⌠Pugh.â     That stunned Y/N into silence for a few seconds before she spluttered out a greeting and said âhiâ as well. âNot to be rude, but how did you get my number?â     âStole it from Harryâs phone. Look, heâs miserable. Keeps moping around, and I canât take it anymore. Last night I found him crying in his pillow with your shirt over it.â     âWhat? Why?â     âBecause it didnât smell like you anymore.â     Y/Nâs heart broke. âWhy didnât he tell me anything? We just talked, and he said he was fine. God, that man is so dumb sometimes.â     âIs there any way you could find a way to get here?â Florence asked biting down her lip.     She heard Y/N sigh at the other end of the line. âIâll â Iâll try and figure something out. Have to know whatâs going on at work, I mean it has been like two months since the video, so maybeâŚâ She was more so talking to herself, but then remembered about Florence. âListen, can I give you a message when I find out if my boss will let me?â     âOf course!â The actress was excited about the possibility of Y/N getting here, as long as it got Harry out of his depressive mood.     âOh, and Iâll need to know what kind of restrictions are on set. Iâll figure something out with flights and quarantine, but I have zero clue as to whatâs it like where youâre filming.â     Florence waved her off, even though she couldnât see the motion. âLeave that to me. Just get your ass over here before the guy cries himself dry.â     It was a struggle though on all three ends â Harry was still moping, because not only had Y/Nâs shirt lost its smell of her, but homesickness was hitting full force, Florence was getting more and more desperate as she attempted to take his mind off of things, but nothing seemed to work, and Y/N was trying to get on any possible flight to Harry while arranging two tests and an AirBnB she could self-isolate in for two weeks while attempting to set up her work from afar at the same time.     Two days after Florenceâs call, Y/N sent her a message âFlying in tomorrow at 4 AM. Donât tell Harry. Heâll feel even shittier cause I have to stay alone in quarantine. First test came back negative.â     She sighed in relief at the message and immediately texted back âiâve got you a set pass ready, just need a picture. selfie will do. also, masks are mandatory on the lot, so bring those.â     Immediately Y/N sent a thumbs up, and a picture of herself she didnât absolutely despise to be used on the ID card. All that was left was to pack. And spend two weeks in an attempt of not going crazy with anticipation before seeing Harry.     Those two weeks turned out to be worse than the two months between the music video shoot and going to the filming lot. Because throughout then, Y/N knew her only access to him would be through FaceTime, but to be about twenty minutes away from the man without the ability to touch him was pure torture, but at least Harry seemed completely oblivious to the change in her surroundings.     As they still continued on with their calls, not once did he mention her background, or how the paintings suddenly had managed to switch positions or the fact that Y/N didnât even own paintings. She was sure she couldâve been missing an arm, and he wouldnât have mentioned it with how tired he looked.     âHave you even slept, Har?â     âNot really,â he groaned, getting more comfortable in his bed. âWeâve had a bunch of early shoots and then late nights, âcause we need to get the continuity for the scenes, and then the dayâs full of Zoom calls, and well, I canât not call you.â     Y/N scoffed, scolding him. âYou know damn well I wonât be offended if we sacrifice a couple of calls for you to get some proper sleep.â     âI know, but I will.â     Y/N sighed, knowing in a way it was her fault. She could tell him she no longer was hours of time zones away, but rather watched the same sunset and sunrise as him, but she also knew Harry, and he would be unable to stay away from her until her quarantine was over.     She was quite happy sheâd sat through the fourteen mandatory days, because when she got on set, even though Harry was usually good at keeping his composure during a scene, despite the mask, heâd recognise Y/N anywhere, and all of the lines flew out of his head.     âJack?â Florenceâs hand came to cup Harryâs cheek, trying to bring him back on track. âYou alright?â     But he didnât even care about improvising to get out of the flub as his lips were split apart by a grin, and he dashed away, a loud âCUT!â ringing throughout the set, but Harry already had Y/N in his arms, spinning the girl around.     âBest friends my ass,â Florence murmured as she went to the two.     Harry was speechless, Y/Nâs face in between his hands as he looked her up and down. âHow are you here? What? Why?â     âThank Florence.â Y/N gave an attempt at motioning to the actress with her head. She set the whole thing up.â     Harryâs head whipped to his scene partner. âYou knew Y/N was here for two weeks and told me nothing?â     âYour brain short-circuited when you saw her! You wouldnât be of no use on set at all if I had.â     Harry scoffed, throwing an arm over Y/Nâs shoulder. âCome on, letâs get away from this meanie.â But as he walked away, he looked over his shoulder and mouthed a grateful âthank youâ to her.     All Florence could hope for was that heâd get it together and confess, but it didnât seem like he was in any sort of a rush. Y/N was set to be there for three weeks, but the thought of the woman leaving without knowing how Harry felt, leaving him in a sea of his own heartache, made her miserable, especially after a night theyâd all spent together.     Harry really wanted Y/N to get to know the people he worked with so he invited the ones closest to him for a movie night, during which he himself had been the first one to actually fall asleep, of course.     For most of it, as âWestworldâ ran on in the background, he spent curled up in Y/Nâs lap, his head resting against her chest with her fingers weaving through the shortened locks. She had to get used to the length, motion automatically wanting to go on longer than it was possible to. Soon enough, the soothing motions lulled her to sleep as well, their bodies leaning into one another and perfectly fitting together.     As tired as Florence was of seeing Harry, a person whoâd become her friend now pine for someone so hard, it was absolutely heart-melting to watch the two interact. Everyone could see Y/N had the same feelings as Harry did for her, only she hid them a bit better. A little, but not by a lot.     No friends acted the way those two did around one another. Sure, people could be touchy, but not like that, not with such intimacy behind the motions. She felt like she was being a little creepy as she pulled out her phone to take a picture, but it was too cute not to.     A loud noise from somewhere outside set made Y/N shoot up straight, and Florence held her breath as she clutched onto her phone, having swiped it accidentally into video mode and filming the whole thing.     âNo,â Harry whined, a hand reaching up for Y/N and grabbing at her elbow. âCome back. âS too early.â     She just nodded, grumbling something unintelligible but possibly along the lines of âdonât make me throw handsâ before laying down and snuggling into Harryâs chest.     Florence let out a large sigh of relief and decided to get some sleep as well before their annoying four AM alarm woke them up for set.     This time it was the other way around, as Y/N whined for Harry to âcome back and keep her warmâ.     Florence watched as Harry slipped out of Y/Nâs grasp, but not before pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead and a whispered a promise to âsee her when the Sunâs upâ. The second the trailer door was closed, she slapped his shoulder, and Harry gasped in shock. âWhat'dya do that for?â     âStop that! Stop that stupid dance!â She stomped her foot on the ground. âIâm sick and tired of watching you watch her with that dumb longing expression on your face. I canât take it anymore. Why do you think I went through all that trouble to get her here?â     âI told you I would!â     She sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose. âLook, I know itâs not my place or anything, but she does like you. A lot.â     Harry threw her an uncertain gaze. âAnd how do you know?â     âBecause that woman spent two weeks in self-isolation just to see you! Sheâs gone through how many of those awful Covid tests just to go and visit you! Sheâs dropped everything for you, has supported you through so much, and never fails to boost you up.â     âThatâs what friends do.â     âNo.â Florence shook her head. âThat kind of loyalty⌠thatâs what people in love give. I havenât talked to my best friend in like a month. Whatâs the longest youâve gone without speaking to Y/N?â     And with that question, she left Harry to ponder not only his feelings but the girlâs he was in love with as well. Because if he had to be honest, the reason heâd been dragging everything out, the reason heâd stayed pining for Y/N for years on end was that he tried to write everything she did off as something a childhood best friend would do.     The truth was more terrifying than anything because once that came to light, itâd change everything, and Harry didnât know if he was ready. He wanted it, desperately so if it meant Y/N becoming someone he could love freely and openly, but not if by the end of it, she'd disappear from his life, leaving a hole the size of his heart in his chest.     His thoughts were cut short as someone knocked on the âHair&Make-upâ door, and an assistant let in a pouting Y/N. Well, he couldnâtâ see the pout behind the mask, but he definitely knew it was there, making a smile come on his own face.     She plopped down in an empty sofa and crossed her arms. âI was cold.â     Harry snorted, wanting to shake his head, but didn't as to not ruin the hair stylistâs work. âYouâre always cold.â     âAnd youâre a living furnace.â     â âS that why you like cuddling? Leeching off my warmth?â     The same assistant whoâd let Y/N in handed her a cup of coffee, which she was ready to kiss the woman for, but opted for a âthank youâ. âWeâve established I only use you to get to other celebs. What makes you think I wouldnât use you for those sort of things.â     For a moment, the trailer settled into silence, as Y/N enjoyed her morning coffee while the crew kept doing their own work.     âItâs so weird,â Y/N piped up, eyes racking up and down Harryâs body. âDonât even wanna really look at you like that.â     He let out a mock gasp of hurt. âWhat dâya mean? Am I suddenly repulsive to you?â     âNo!â she let out a laugh. âItâs just odd seeing you without the tattoos. Theyâre such a huge part of you, even the dumb ones. Canât really imagine you any differently.â     âWould you love me any differently without them?â The question was bold, even though he knew she did love him, he had to start making moves.     âNo,â Y/N shook her head. âI donât think so. I believe Iâd be a different person then as well, but Iâd love you all the same. As long as youâd do the same with me.â     Harry nodded looking down at his hands then back up at her, catching her eyes through the reflection in the mirror. âDonât think thereâs a dimension out there where I donât love you.â     âI mean that is a bold statement,â Y/N said, sipping on the remnants of her coffee. âWhat if Iâm like a weird, cat-skinning psychopath in one dimension? Would you love me even then?â     âJesus Christ, Y/L/N, do you just normally come up with those gruesome scenarios or is it a hobby?â     She wiggled her eyebrows, standing up and throwing away the paper cup. âThereâs a reason I have a VPN and clean my search history. Iâll see you in your trailer?â     âYeah.â Harry nodded and smiled. âIâll be there in thirty minutes.â     The next half-hour he kept hyping himself up, about how he was actually going to do it, but Florence intercepted him right as he was turning down the way his trailer stood. âHow are you gonna do it?â     âI â â Harry huffed and placed his hands on his hips. âIn the beginning, I had like a whole romantic outing planned, but⌠Iâve dragged this on long enough, so I think Iâll just tell her.â     âOkay, good.â Florence nodded and slapped his shoulder in approval. âAnd if I donât hear that trailer rocking, I will throw you in a ditch.â     Harryâs eyes widened at the statement, fully knowing she meant her words, but she was already half-way down the track, blond hair swishing behind her back.     It was then or never.     Slowly he opened his own trailer door as if it was Y/Nâs place not his, but by the looks of how sheâd sprawled out on his bed, she had made herself right at home. Just like sheâd done it on the first day of school, but just with his heart.     âHey!â She smiled looking at him. âYou ready to film?â     âYeah, but umm⌠I kind of wanted to talk to you beforehand.â     Y/Nâs brows furrowed at Harryâs serious tone, so she sat up, nodding. âSure. Is everything alright?â âItâs nothing bad, at least I hope you wonât take it in a bad way... Iâve actually been wanting to tell you this since that winterâs break party you had while doing your masters...â He let out a small chuckle but seeing Y/Nâs eyes widen in a panic he stopped. âOh, God,â she moaned. âYou have a kid! Oh my God.â âWhat? No!â Harry spluttered. âWhy the hell is the first thing you assume that I have a kid?â âI donât know!â She was now standing facing him completely. âWeâve never had secrets between us, especially for as long as youâve apparently kept them, what am I supposed to think? Maybe one of the girls you hooked up with got pregnant, and youâve been hiding the fact youâre a baby daddy because you know I wouldnât be able to keep the fact I can be the cool drunk aunt to myself.â All of that came out as is sheâd prepared it ages ago. âWell, no.â Harry shook his head stepping closer so he could be chest to chest with Y/N. âIâm not anyoneâs baby daddy. At least I donât think so, but umm... when that moment would come... when I have a kid...â He looked up at the ceiling and sighed before lifting a gentle hand to cup her cheek. I wouldnât want you to be the drunk aunt. I um...â There goes nothing. âIâd kinda like if you were the mom.â âOf course, Iâll be the Godmother!â Both of them said at the same time, making the otherâs brain stumble over the words said. âWait, mom?â Y/Nâs question was breathless. âLike donate my eggs or some shit?â âNo like, Iâve been in love with you for close to four years, and I wanna try and build a future with you, where youâre more than just my best friend.â     âOh.â     That was all that managed to escape her mouth as he fully opened his heart, and Harry couldnât lie â it shattered. He didnât know what he was expecting, but it was more than that. âThatâs...â Y/N huffed sitting down on the bed. âThatâs a lot to take in Harry. Like a lot.â âI know.â He sighed and sat down next to her. âWhich is why Iâve been pushing this away for as long as I could, but... it was time. It wasnât fair to you or me to keep on living like that. Look.â Harry took her palm in his. âWhatever you want us to be, weâll be that. I - I mean Iâll be heartbroken if you say you donât feel the same, but no matter what you tell me now, I wonât let you leave my life. I love you, and Iâm in love with you. This is your choice which way you chose to go with.â Y/N shook her head, interlacing their fingers and finally looking up at him. âI donât want you to be heartbroken. Itâs the last thing, Iâd ever want to see you like. And umm well, if it takes me using the pair of ovaries I have to admit Iâve been in love with you too to change that, I guess Iâll have to say it. Iâm in love with you too.â Harryâs eyes glimmered with unshed tears of happiness, as he looked at Y/N like sheâd hung the stars in the sky. Not that it mattered. He always looked at her like that. âYou mean it?â âYeah,â she chuckled, wiping away a few stray pearls from her own cheeks. âI guess I always thought Iâd end up the drunk aunt in your life, so thatâs why I thought youâd ask me to be whatever future childâs Godmother. But I love you, and Iâm in love with you too.â âCan I â â Fuck, Harry was too giddy for his own good. âCan I kiss you?â And when Y/N chuckled, nodding he swore he already was in heaven. âYes, please.â     At first, the touch of his lips was gentle, almost afraid, but the second he pressed them to Y/Nâs, and she gasped at the sensation, it became full of lust as passion, years of pent-up pining and angst and just plain old stupidity surfacing and morphing itself into a steamy make-out session.     In a split second, she was sprawled out on Harryâs bed, his toned body leaning over hers and teasing hands moving along her sides, making her squirm and ache for more of his touch, but she wasnât the only one who wanted to explore a body with a new mindset of what was possible.     As Y/N moaned from Harryâs tongue invading her mouth, her hand couldnât help itself as it slid down his chest, and her finger flicked against the button of his trousers.     âCan I touch you there?â Y/N whispered against his mouth, and Harry eagerly nodded.     âPlease. Been dreaming about this for literally years.â     Smiling, she allowed him to continue and explore her mouth with his tongue, intoxicated on one anotherâs taste. In fact, Y/N was so far gone just from the kiss, she forgot how a fly worked and needed Harryâs help to open it.     âGet back here,â she grumbled as he chuckled, having leaned up a bit to make it easier for her to get the offensive piece of clothing off. âWeâll see how you fare with a bra.â     âOh, Iâm an expert.â His hands trailed to her shoulder where he snapped one of the straps against her skin, making her yelp.     âYou do not want to do that when my hand is an inch away from your dick.â     But the threat had no merit to it, as she dipped her palm behind Harryâs boxers while his mouth went to soothe the sting and leave a little mark on her skin, which heâd get to admire later on.     The second, Y/N wrapped her hand around his cock an involuntary moan escaped into the air, as she gripped him. Fuck, she couldnât wait until he was inside her, because, and it might sound a little clichĂŠ given how they were best friends whoâd fallen in love with one another, but she was one hundred percent sure, he was made exactly for her.     But no matter how much she twisted her hand or how gently or roughly she rubbed the tip, he couldnât get hard, and Harry was on the verge of tears, which Y/N saw and instantly pulled away, cupping his face.     âIâm sorry,â he choked out. âFuck, I donât know whatâs wrong with me.â     âHey!â Y/N cooed. âNone of that. Itâs alright. Shit happens.â     Harry nodded understanding that she was right, but he still felt shitty and well, he felt insecure about it. âI just. Fuck. Usually, when I think of you, Iâm hard in like a second.â     And although all Y/N wanted to do was smirk and tease him about the fact that he thought of her while wanking himself off, that wasnât the right moment.     âI promise, you turn me on, you do." He sniffled. "This had never happened before.â But Y/N wasnât offended or sad, and her laugh wasnât mocking or trying to hurt him.     âHarry youâre dead tired.â She cupped his cheek with one of her hands, and if heâd been ice cream he wouldâve literally melted. âYou had to wake up at four in the fucking morning and wonât go to sleep until two the next day. Let yourself rest a bit.â     âBut,â he whined and then huffed. âBut I wanna love on you. Wanna show you just how crazy I am about you.â     âAnd you will. You know Iâll always hold you to your word. But this wonât be fun for either of us if mid-fuck you suddenly collapse on me asleep. I donât need to go to the A and E and explain the broken nose is because my boyfriend decided to take a nap while shagging. A nap on my face.â     But Harry hadnât really heard anything sheâd said after Y/N mentioned the b-word, a dopey smile on his face. âIâm your boyfriend? You really want me like that?â     âI mean I would prefer if you were PhoebeâŚâ     Harry pinched her side, making her squeal before tackling her in a hug. âShut up!â     And thatâs how the two fell asleep (and were woken up twenty minutes later by an assistant in a panic given how Harry was supposed to be on set in five minutes)  â wrapped up in one anotherâs arms, smiles on their faces, and no longer best friends, but lovers.

Meeting and Dating Benny Rodriguez

- You and Benny met when you were younger. Youâd lived in the neighborhood your entire life and with Benny and the boys being the only kids around your house; and the fact that you were a bit of a tomboy in general, they were who you made friends with.
- Like most young boys, they werenât too keen on some little girl butting into their games, but you were persistent! It took you a couple weeks and a whole lot of effort but soon enough they let you stay and play without any complaints. After that, the rest was history.
- Youâd sort of always just been one of the guys. The main reason you were allowed to stick around was because they nearly forgot you werenât one. You played baseball, werenât afraid to get dirty, and never acted all âprissyâ; you were the only type of girl theyâd ever be caught dead letting into their crew.
- And; without any opposition from you, thatâs how things went on for a few years. It wasnt until you got a little older that you realized that being âone of the boysâ maybe wasnât the ...greatest thing in the world.
- You sort of always had a thing for Benny. It was easier to brush off and not realize when you were younger but as you got into your teenage years, it became more difficult to ignore.
- And thus, your dilemma finally became obvious. Youâd spent so long being one of the guys that you were completely sure Benny only saw you as that; he sure acted like he did.
- So a million thoughts raced through your head. You wondered if you could change how he saw you, if you wanted to, how youâd do it, should you do it, when youâd do it, etc. Maybe you should try some makeup, change your clothes, your personality; should you stop hanging around him so much?
- You had no idea what to do ...so you tried a few things. You dressed a tad bit girlier; not enough to have the gang on you or ruin your ability to play, and wore your hair down, and ...nothing happened.
- All you got was a few comments from the guys asking âwhatâs up with the hair?â. Soon enough, you were grumpily pulling your hair up into a ponytail after getting not even the slightest reaction from Benny.
- After several attempts, youâre at a loss and somewhat frustrated. You debate just telling him but the day you decide to, you chicken out and stay home.
- Your mother tells Benny you arenât feeling well when he asks if you can come out and play and you watch from behind the curtain guiltily as he leaves your front steps, casting one last look from behind his shoulder at your window.
- You donât show up to the field for another day or two before deciding that you need to go back, missing your friends and fresh air. You figure you can play it cool like always, and you do, getting welcome back slaps on the back and shakes.
- You play for a few hours before the boys have to go home and youâre left on the field alone with Benny. Youâre just about to walk out as well ...up until Benny calls after you. With a deep breath, you jog back over and stand in front of him.
âYou feeling better?â he asks and you both nod, one after the other.
âThatâs good. I missed you out here,â he says before seeming to realize what he said. He laughs slightly before following up with a âYeah-Yeah sucks at playing your position.â.
- You both laugh before he asks âwhy donât we play, just you and me. You throw and Iâll hitâ. And you try to turn him down, telling him that you should be getting home, but then he gives you that smile of his and a âcome onâ and you just canât refuse.
- So you get in position and the two of you play, swapping turns back and forth when you have to run and catch the ball.
- On one of your last few throws, he runs over to hand you the ball but doesnât immediately let go. Instead, he leans in and presses a chaste kiss to your cheek before running back to his spot on the field, casting a look back at you and subsequently a smile as he does.
- The two of you kiss for real when youâre at the edge of the field, getting ready to walk home. He calls your name and you pause, standing still as he grips your shoulder and leans in, planting a peck on your lips.
âWhyâd you do that?â you ask, though itâs obvious that you donât mind.
He merely shrugs and grins at you. âI wanted to.â
- You canât help but smile back, letting him wrap an arm around your shoulders and walk you off the field.
- There isnât a ton of pda in your relationship but thereâs a bunch of contact: high fives, his arm around your shoulders, his leg touching yours when you sit next to each other. He just doesnât want the guys on your case for the rest of the week for a measly kiss in front of them.Â
- Affectionate hair ruffling.Â
- Hand holding, usually when the gang isn't around; unless itâs Smalls.Â
- Forehead and cheek kisses.
- Soft kisses.
- He has your picture on his dresser and you cant help but smile every time you see it.Â
- When it really comes down to it, heâs got a huge soft spot for you. He may treat you like one of the boys most of the time but thereâs a twinkle in his eyes that tells you youâre definitely different from them to him.Â
- Excited hugs, usually after he accomplishes something big or you get good news.Â
- Sitting in between his legs, usually with his chest pressed against your back.
- He doesnât mind cuddling, even if itâs sort of in front of the gang, mainly because his style of cuddling is his arm draped over your shoulder and you resting against his side.
- As though heâd allow you to not have a nickname! He doesnât really use petnames except; maybe, when heâs using them as jokes or sarcastically, but youâve probably had a nickname since you were little that he still uses.
- Although, he does say âthatâs my girlâ to himself or just outloud whenever he gets all proud of you; like when you score a homerun.
- The boys definitely tease him about you. Its the one thing they have on him.
-Â He lets you win when you guys race. Youâre absolutely aware of it but you think itâs cute so you both jokingly pretend he didnt.
- Heâs always there to help get you out of a pickle. If you have a problem it is both your problems the minute you tell him.
- He always brushes off your praise with a halfhearted and playful scoff but in actuality, he loves it whenever he gets a compliment from you.
- Thereâs definitely been moments where youâve been in his room with him and asked about some sort of clothing item and he just casually asks if you want it. And ...Youâre damn right you do.
- Randomly being carried away from things isnât all too uncommon for you. He likes to pick you up, whether itâs just by your armpits or in a piggyback ride.
- Walking home from school together.Â
- Spending your summers together.Â
- Expect a lot of random visits and him calling you to come hang out. If he wants to see you, heâll just come knocking on your door.Â
- Smalls is sort of like your adoptive child, even though you're only like two years older than him. Youâre just always looking out for the younger boy and making sure he feels welcome and all that.Â
- Getting introduced to Beast and Mr. Mertle.Â
- Knowing tons of baseball facts because of him.
-Â Playing catch in the lot. He goes easy on you but to be fair; he goes easy on most people.
-Â Looking after him and making sure he doesnât over exert himself.
- Iâm sorry but youâll have to just accept that baseball is his priority a lot of the time. Itâs his âlifeâ and youâll just have to accept that if you want to be with him.Â
- He would genuinely ask you to marry him in complete awe if you were to ever get him baseball game tickets.Â
- He makes a big deal over your birthday, well, him and the rest of the boys. They all cheer when you arrive at the field, giving all their âlook who it isâsâand slapping you on the back.
- Going to the movies ...after they put up another screen.... Heâll usually grab your hand and keep glancing over at you whenever you go, he just thinks youâre really pretty.
- Hanging out in the treehouse together.Â
- Going to the fair with him.Â
- Pool dates.
- A lot of your dates get invaded by the gang, especially if they involve pizza âŚor food of any kind really.Â
- His mother probably insists on giving him some money every time she hears heâs going to hang out with you because she wants him to be a little gentleman and pay for your âdateâ.
-Â Even though youâve always sort of been seen as just one of the guys, youâre serious bragging rights for Benny; both to the other boys and to Phillips. All it takes is one visit to the pool with them and suddenly theyâre all a little envious of their leader.
- Though, to be honest, all the boys in the group have probably; at some point, had a crush on you or thought that youâd end up together because it just makes sense, you know? They werenât in love but they had those little âwhy am is my heart racingâ type of moments with you.
- Even though he brags about you, heâs still a jealous boy. He pretty much glares at any other guy; besides the guys in the gang, youâre with. Even if heâs doing something else, he finds it difficult to concentrate. The minute you arrive back at his side, heâll ask why youâre hanging out with them, usually with a subtle; or not so subtle, insult directed towards them.
- Even though he knows youâre capable of holding your own, heâll still always jump to stick up for you because itâs just a habit of his.
- Heâs protective of everybody in his gang so that obviously includes you. He isnât above fighting; or at least embarrassing, someone whoâs giving you a hard time or literally carrying you to a safe distance when youâre near something he deems dangerous. Plus, heâs always the first one at your side no matter whatâs going on.
- The two of you donât fight a ton. Youâve been friends for a while so you sort of already know what rubs each other the wrong way and can avoid them because of that. If you are fighting, itâs probably about something stupid and you wind up just leaving; for one reason or another, as he calls after you.
- That being said, you usually just resolve things after a bit of arguing; without you having to walk off. As an apology, heâll give you a sincere âhey, Iâm sorry, alright?â before making some joke along the lines of asking if you want to hit him. Youâll hug and heâll kiss your head and everything will be settled.
- You donât tell each other that you love each other a whole lot; it sort of just isnât Bennys thing, but you show each other you do with your actions.
- In the future, youâre there at every single one of his games, cheering him on.
- He probably asks you to marry him right after highschool. He just canât wait to make you Mrs. Rodriguez.

Psycho Analysis: Suicide Squad Team A
(WARNING! This analysis contains SPOILERS! Seriously, as soon as you click that read more, youâre gonna be smacked with SPOILERS! Donât say I didnât give you ample warning this time!)
The worldâs in danger yet again, and Amanda Waller is in need of some expendable forces to take on some dirty jobs in the name of preserving peace. Last time she did this, it seems like she hired the wrong people. Nice guy Will Smith Deadshot? Bland, boring Killer Croc? El Diablo, who became attached to a bunch of reprobates after spending a couple hours with them? The only one who was useful in that squad was Katana. She had their backs, could cut all of them in half with one sword stroke just like mowing the lawn, and her sword traps the souls of its victims. Unfortunately, she was decidedly not expendable, so what is a girlboss like Waller to do?
Easy: Assemble a brand new squad of criminals to do the dirty work. Harley and Boomerang are the only ones she brought back, because letâs be real, theyâre the only ones we give a damn about. Filling out the rest of the squad are the stoic, craggy crackshot Savant; the handsome, German spear-thrower Javelin; the alien warrior Mongal; the frothing, psychotic animal Weasel; the confident and all-powerful TDK; and Blackguard, who is literally just a guy. Together, this team gets deployed to Corto Maltese to do what no one else can do, and with skills like theirs, they are absolutely unstoppable!
They all fucking die before the opening credits.
Motivation/Goals: Considering the goal of the squad is to shave time off their prison sentences by going on the mission, itâs ostensibly the reason every single one of these goons accepted the job. Savant and Weasel are pretty well established in this regard; we get to focus on Savant for much of the opening, so we can get a sense of him, and Weasel is stated to have murdered no less than 27 children. So, yeah, they need to do this mission.
The rest, though? Who knows! Why are Mongal, Javelin, and TDK in prison? How did they even get an alien like Mongal? What did they do to land in the position theyâd need to go on a suicide mission? Why doesnât this movie have flashy, intrusive cards explaining everything to us in a throwaway gag in a montage?!
Blackguard, at least, has some other motivation. He sold out the entire squad to the military of Corto Maltese, which is why theyâre ambushed. Now, thereâs actually some ambiguity here: Did he do this of his own volition, and was this a complete surprise, or is it, as it is heavily implied, all part of Wallerâs plan and she let this happen as a diversion for the other team to get in unnoticed?
Honestly, though, it doesnât matter what their goals are. Theyâre all dead within five minutes of the movie starting, with one exception.
Performance: So, the reason these guys are even worth talking about is because, despite their minuscule screentime, all of their actors manage to cram in enough humor and characterization that theyâre all pretty fun and likable. Michael Rooker is as stony and stoic as ever as Savant (until he hilariously isnât), Flula Borgâs Javelin is really sweet and charming in his interactions with Harley, and Pete Davidsonâs Blackguard is just amazingly douchey and pathetic. Special mention goes to Nathan Fillionâs TDK, who has an utterly endearing and unwavering faith in his astoundingly crappy ability to⌠detach his arms. Itâs honestly kind of beautiful. Then thereâs Weasel as portrayed by Sean Gunn, who is just a hilarious crackhead of an animal man.
Final Fate: Literally every single one of them die horribly thanks to Blackguardâs betrayal. Heâs the first to go, because as soon as he walks out saying âHey guys, itâs me, the one who contacted you!â he literally has his face blasted clean off. The rest go soon after. Mongal, in one of the most astounding moments of idiocy Iâve ever seen, leaps on a helicopter despite Rick Flag telling her specifically not to. Her weight and strength send it careening out of control, which leads to it shredding Captain Boomerang to bits before exploding, burning her alive as she painfully screams and writhes in agony. TDK gets his arms shot into Swiss cheese, leading to him bleeding out since even detached they still are part of him. Javelin is also shot, but gets a dying moment with Harley where he passes her Checkovâs Javelin. Finally, after witnessing all of this carnage, Savant completely loses his shit and tries to swim away, leading to Waller blowing his head up.
You may be wondering what happened to Weasel. He appears to drown as soon as the Squad deploys, because despite being actually smart in this movie, Waller forgot to make sure everyone on the Squad could swim. Thankfully, this lovable child-murdering crackhead rodent was just sleeping, and wakes up in the first credit scene.
Best Scene: Obviously, itâs their one and only scene. Itâs a magnificent slaughter that puts the X-Force scene from Deadpool 2 to shame.
Final Thoughts & Score: Iâve gotta hand it to James Gunn. Even though these losers are only onscreen for a few minutes, they all get to cram a lot of charm and personality into that time, to the point itâs actually kind of sad seeing them all die. Itâs a beautiful mix of comedy and tragedy. Since their screentime is so limited, though, Iâm mostly going to be grading them on style, performance, and so on rather than on villainy like normal. They are all bad guys, as they donât really get a chance to redeem themselves like the other Squad, so Iâm still counting them as villains, which means they could potentially score above an 8 (which is the highest score Iâm willing to give heel-face turn villains, because they end up being better as characters in general than as villains).
Iâm also not going to talk about Boomerang (Iâll talk about him when I review the original Squad) or Harley (because she not only lives, but deserves her own solo Psycho Analysis). Now here we go, from best to worst:
TDK
If you thought anyone but TDK would get top marks, youâre sadly mistaken. Seeing Nathan Fillion proudly wield the insanely lame power to detach his arms to lightly tap soldiers on the head and gently grab their guns is a sight I never knew I needed to see until this movie. The fact he just seems so darn proud about this power that he doesnât even bother to use in any way that would be remotely useful is honestly really endearing. Frankly, the sheer fact they adapted Arms-Fall-Off Boy in any way is enough for me to give him a 10/10.
Weasel
Weasel is just disgustingly delightful. Heâs just a horrible, nasty, ugly little bastard⌠But heâs kind of adorable? He clearly has no idea where he is at any given time and is just so goddamn freaky that I canât help but love him. The fact that, despite being a character who in the comics is noteworthy only for dying on his first mission with the Squad, he manages to survive the entire movie is pretty impressive. Hopefully he comes back in the future, but either way he gets an 8/10 from me.
Javelin
Honestly, aside from Boomerang, his death stung the most. Heâs just so cute and charming, and he doesnât even get to fling his javelin at anyone! Thankfully, he passes it on to Harley, and boy does she ever get to use it! Heâs so cute, I have to give him an 8/10. I just wish we got more of him.
Savant
Savant is just an absolutely hilarious bait-and-switch. We follow him through the prologue, with everything seeming to point to him as our main character and the Squad leader. Heâs stoic, heâs cranky, and he has impeccable aim⌠and then we get to the beach and he just freaks the hell out and starts screaming and crying and running away like a little bitch. Seeing Michael Rooker act like heâs shitting his pants after playing a badass like Yondu is just the sort of hilarious subversiveness that James Gunn loves to do when you let him loose. The fact that he looks like, to paraphrase the TVTropes YMMV page for the movie, a âcyberpunk Tommy Wiseauâ is the icing on this 7/10 cake.
Blackguard
I was prepared to hate this guy just based on how lame Pete Davidsonâs costume was, and you know what? I do hate him. But I love to hate him. Heâs just an utterly pathetic scoundrel and a coward, true to his name. The fact he is the first to die, as just about everyone predicted, and is killed absolutely gruesomely makes any annoyance he could provide moot, and his freeakout over being seated next to Weasel on the plane is actually kind of funny. I was originally going to give him a 6, but you know what? He can have a low 7/10. Heâs like the only member of this particular Squad to actually do anything evil, so I gotta give him props for that.
Mongal
Let me make this perfectly clear: I do not blame James Gunn or actress Mayling Ng. Iâm not actually mad at either of them for what they chose to do, because it is ultimately hilarious and sad. It suited the narrative of the film, and Iâm not actually, genuinely mad.
With all that out of the way, Mongal is one hell of a stupid cunt. It is one thing to cause your own death with your stupidity, it is something else entirely to cause the death of a beloved character with your poorly planned attack. The fact she didnât take into account how her weight and strength would effect an airborne helicopter makes one wonder if she is really supposed to be based on a character who can take on Superman and live to tell about it.
Letâs compare her to two similar characters to really show how bad she is. Like Blackguard, she is directly responsible for a death on the beach, Blackguard being responsible for everyone by selling them out and leading them into an ambush (and yes, Iâm including him as well), and Mongal killing Boomerang with the chopper. The difference is, Blackguardâs betrayal was deliberate, he meant to sell the team out, he was actively doing something evil there, while Mongal killed Boomerang out of sheer idiocy.
Now, letâs compare her to Zeitgeist from the similar bloody massacre that occurred during X-Forceâs deployment in Deadpool 2. Like Mongal, he accidentally kills a teammate. The difference is, in the case of Zeitgeist, he only accidentally melted Peter, it was a freak accident, and ultimately it does get undone by the end. Meanwhile, Mongal made a conscious, stupid decision and ended up killing her squadmate with her own idiocy. She sucks, hardcore. I donât do this lightly, but Iâm giving her a 1/10. Villains just donât get much stupider than her.
I will giver her this, though: the makeup work on her is good. Sheâs lowkey kinda hot if Iâm being honest. But being hot and having good makeup does not a good villain make.

The Five times She met the Hargreeves- Five Hargreeves
Plot: Fives wife has been looking for him for ages, and she is not so happy about it, although she meets his fellow siblings along the way (Fluff and cuteness mainly)
Cammie was dangerous. In-fact she was well known for being the most ruthless assassin the commission has. Her abilities made her quick, her training made her agile, he mind made her strong. She never played by the rules. But if you saw under the fact she could kill you within the blink of an eye, she was a sweetheart. Her heart was made of gold, she was soft and kind the kind of girl thought to be made of honey and glass.Â
However, not playing by the rules, lead the Handler to become fed up with the bright bubbly girl so she threw her to the end of the world with nothing to âhardenâ her up. Unfortunately for the Handler that is how Camille Winters met Five Hargreeves and the two became inseparable - unstoppable - the perfect duo.
There were moments where Cammie was willing to murder Five Hargreeves, and that was the day he got the equations wrong.

It was a cold Thursday night when Allison Hargreeves was talking with her friends about the revolution in the hair salon. It was like any other day.
Until - with a loud crash, the door was thrust open. Everyone jumped to their feet, standing in a defensive position.
In the door frame stood a girl, who looked to be in her teens. Her face was unreadable as she spoke in a clear commanding voice.
âIâm Cammie. Man over the road called the cops on ya love. Iâd disperse the mothers meetingâ
Allison never got to thank her, she was gone as quick as she came.
                            ***
Klaus as never one for constant socialising, which is why he was sat in an empty coffee shop with Ben sat opposite him. He didnât notice the girl in a waitress uniform stand next to him until she spoke.
âIm Cammie, you want anything else Mister?â
Klaus looked up, to see a teen girl staring back at him with an unreadable expression.
âAre you not a little young to be of the working class my dear?â he asked absentmindedly. Ben rolled his eyes.
The girl smiled. âIm way older then you would believe darling,â she turned to where Ben was sat, seemingly invisible to anyone but Klaus. âAnd what about you hot stuff?â she smirked.
Klaus lifted his head from his arms âYou can see him?â he asked
âNo one ever comes in here darling, I think Iâd notice not one but two cuties when they walk in,â
Ben sent an awkward smile âNo thank you.â he said.
Cammie sent a sweet smile before walking off. She was gone before they could say anything else.Â
                             ***
Cammie was furious. And that was an understatement. Five had gone through the portal, taking her with him to get back to his family but somehow she was thrown away and separated from him thrown back into the 60â˛s where she tried desperately to find him. Then, when she awoke to the grimy alleyway she had been chucked into she realised that she was stuck in her teenage body.
She told Five. She told him the equations were wrong but did he listen? Nope.
And now she was stuck god knows where.
Now, Cammie like Five had extraordinary powers. Although there lines of what she could do were blurred she could see flashes of events that happened in the past, present and future. In other words, time was her bitch. But when she saw the flash of Five being threatened by the Handler her blood boiled.
The only issue with Five is that the little shit couldn't seem to stay in the right timeline so Cammie didnât know when he would be experiencing what she thought he was going through.
Needless to say all thoughts of common sense went out the window when she saw the Handler pointing a gun at her teenage husband. So naturally she teleported to the commission.
When she arrived the Handler was sitting at her office with an unpleasant smirk on her face. In-front of her were two people whom Cammie did not recognise. The first was a man, with long Jesus style hair and tan skin. He had tan skin and wore a shocked expression. The other was a woman with shoulder length dark hair and wide brown eyes. The Handler did not seem even slightly surprised and Cammieâs sudden appearance.
âCammie dear, to what do I owe the pleasure?â she asked smiling.
âWhy the HELL is my husband?â She growled, eyes narrowing into slits. The Handler rolled her eyes.
âAh yes. Donât worry heâs a free man, still trying to stop what cannot be stopped..I must say you do look better at this age than you did two weeks agoâ
Cammie rolled her eyes, looking at the two people next to her, who were staring in shock.
âI told him.â Cammie said angrily. âI told him the equations were wrong. But my husband thought he was right.â
Cammie picked up a Vase and threw it against the bookshelf so it shattered into a million pieces. âBECAUSE FIVE HARGREEVES NEVER FUCKING LISTENSâ Â
The Handler didnât even blink, but the man in the chair with the Jesus hair spoke up âHold on a minuet, Five Hargreeves is your husband? The bastard managed to get married??â
Cammie laughed. âAnd how would you know him?â
The man paused for a moment, âIm his brother, Deigoâ
Cammie rolled her eyes, âTell me, was he always a little shit?â
âYes,â
The Handler stood up, picking up a gun and pointing it at Cammie who didnât seem even slightly fazed at the fact her life was being threatened. By now it was a common occurrence. âWhat do you want Cammie?â she said
âWhere. Is. My. Husband.â she seethed
Diego spoke up âLast I heard he was with a Man called Elliot, down an alleywayâ
Cammie turned to face him âHow come yourâe more helpful in a second than Five has been his entire life?â
âTell me, do you flirt with all the Haregreeve siblings?â The Handler sneered.
Cammie laughed âSheâs just salty Five chose me and not her.â
The Handler raised her weapon firing multiple times but it was too late. In a flash of blue light Cammie was gone.
âFive got Married?â
                             ***
Five and Luther were having a nice little conversation about the poor dead Elliot in the chair when they saw a flash of blue light which seemed to be emitting a lot of crashing sounds and swearing coming from the balcony below them.
âShit. Its the commission get down.â Five whispered to Luther who decided to do as he was told.
âHow have they found us?â
Five sighed running his hands through his hair in frustration as he peeked behind the sofa. âI donât know, but they are dangerous so be careful.â
âFIVE HARGREEVES I SWEAR TO GOD IF YOU ARE HERE I AM GOING TO WRING YOUR NECK AND STAB YOUR EYES OUT WITH SPOONSâ
âHow many enemies do you have??â asked Luther eyes wide in shock.
However Five was staring at where the sound was coming from with a slight smile on his face. Luther was more shocked that Five was producing a genuine smile than anything else.Â
âSheâs not an enemyâ he said standing up and walking to the stairs.

Luther looked at him incredulously âWell she sure sounds like it.â
When Five got to the stairs, he was relieved to see Cammie, standing hands on hips glaring at him with the angriest stare she could muster. He merely smiled back, finding it slightly amusing how angry she was. (And slightly scary but he would never admit that)
As soon as it clicked that Five was in fact okay, Cammie marched up the staircase yelling how much she was going to absolutely slaughter him, her speed not slowing down as she drew nearer
âEr - Five? Are you sure she is not the enemy because she looks -â
Luther watched as Cammie came nearer to his brother unsure of what to do until she ...kissed Five?
The girl had ran to Five and placed her hands firmly on the sides of his face pulling him down to kiss her. His arms wrapped around her waist pulling her closer. Her hands travelled to his hair, running her hands through it.Â
Luther just stood there mouth open, trying to comprehend what was happening in front of him.
The kiss broke, leaving Cammie still on her toes, face buried in the crook of Fives neck as he had one arm still wrapped around her waist and the other stroking her hair.
âW h a t?â Luther finally managed to get out
The pair separated looking up at the bigger man, who was staring between the two blankly. first of all he was shocked that Cammie hadnât tried to kill them, but also the fact that his annoying, self centred arsehole of a brother actually found love - and not to mention the fact he had never seen Five as happy as he looked right now.
âCammie, this is my brother Luther, Luther this is my wife Cammie.â
âIm sorry you are married?â
Five rolled his eyes so Luther turned to Cammie.
âYou actually like him?â
At this Cammie laughed, brushing hair out of Fiveâs face âSurprisingly I do - even if he never listens to me.â
Five turned to her âI do listen to you!âÂ
âErm no you donât. I told you the calculations were off but you didnât listen to meâ
Five open and closed his mouth but no words came out, so he turned to Luther.
âWe carry on with the plan, but this time we have her. She is so much better.â
âI still canât get over the fact that you are married,â

Cammie was laid in bed. Her head was on Fives chest, her arms wrapped around him, her leg hooked up on his waist. He was snuggled into her, burying his face in her hair as she slept, his arms tightly wrapped around her
The Hargreeve siblings were stood around around them, each with their mouth open slightly in shock.
âCan anyone else not get over the fact Five is Married?â Luther asked
âTo a reasonable person no doubt,â Allison continued.
âAnd a baddass. The commission adore and are terrified by her.â Diego added
âBen and I would like to point out she clearly makes Five happy. Thatâs a yay right?â
âVanya nodded her head. âHe looks at peace for once.â
And he did. For the first time in years the siblings saw their grumpy, annoying, pessimistic brother smile, a real genuine smile.

It was hinted with salt filling the air. Misty and warm, the summer sea winds rolled off the coast and into your hair. The Long Island sound was picture perfect, just as you remember in your childhood dreams. You were staying in a quaint little town your familly use to visiting summer after summer when you were a child. And it was the perfect place for you to bring yourself on a long over due vacation. Work had been too much to handle this past year, and now you could spend the next week relaxing on the soft sandy coastal beaches of Long Island.Â
However today you had plans to take the ferry across the sound to the aquarium. Sure... you were going by yourself but... So what. You didnât particularly have many friends, nor a partner in your life. But so what? You were an introvert natrually and a social gathering over five people where never your thing.Â
You had just made it to the ferry docks. As always, you were fifteen minutes early. You couldnât bear to be late, especially since you considered âon-timeâ to be late. You were sitting on a public bench facing the sound. Dozens of other people have started to gather around the same place as you. You were just about to take one of your favorite books out of our bag when someone approached you.
âDo you mind if I sit?â You saw a man standing before you. He had a pleasant smile. A soft one that just barely met his eyes. You took one second too long to peer at him.
âUh-...â You tore your gaze from his soft brown hair and to his polished shoes. They were out of style yet he somehow managed to pull it off, âYea-.. I mean no...! Help yourself.â You tried to return his smile but you were far more awkward about it. This man had some strange sense of fashion. He looked oddly in place, however, he seemed like he was trying to live in a time long since past.Â
âAre you waiting for the ferry too?â He asked, making simple conversation to fill the void of silence.Â
You glanced at him quickly a second time and made a nervous little laugh. His dark complexion matched his brown eyes hidden behind perfectly circular glasses, âOh... yes.â You remember you had your ticket in your hand, âIt shouldn't be much longer until it arrives,âÂ
The stranger nodded his head slowly, âHave you ever been on a ferry before?â You nodded your head to his question, âAh, first time for me. They donât have ferries where Iâm from.â He said with a cool expression.
He seemed chatty for a stranger. Most of the time when strangers tried talking to you, youâd brush them off. But this man was lucky that you thought he was rather... stunning in the looks department. That, and he seemed rather harmless as of right now. So you indulged in his conversation, âWhere are you from?â You asked.Â
The man paused only slightly then turned himself to face you. He held out his left hand for you to take. You were hesitant but you still reached out, âAlastor,â He said, âIâm from New Orleans. Iâm guessing youâre a local?â You wouldnât have ever guessed that, he didnât have any kind of southern twang or drawl to his tone.
You shooked his hand but you couldnât stop yourself from laughing a little at his question, âNo, no,â You waved your hand a little, âUh- aha... Iâm (Y/N). And Iâm not from here, but my family and I use to come here all the time for summer vacations.â
âWell, itâs certainly a lovely place to visit. Iâm here for business though so I canât say Iâve gotten the real experience of it all yet. Today was my day off, however, and I thought Iâd go see this aquarium one of my friends keeps telling me to go to. Sheâs rather annoying about it, truly, spoiled even and quite the nagging little thing. But she is my friend after all and Iâd rather not deal with the consequences of not listening to her.âÂ
There was a moment there went you felt your heart stop for a minute, âThatâs... really ironic.â You said slowly.
âOh? You have a bossy friend too?â He jested with a smile.Â
You laughed for a second then shook your head, âNo, I mean that itâs ironic that youâre going to the aquarium,â You paused for a second then reached into your bag and pulled out your phone. You showed Alastor and said, âIâm going too.âÂ
He peered at the e-ticket on your phone, the pushed his glasses up on his nose with a deep laugh, âWhat a small world!â He laughed, then laughed some more, âHow truly ironic indeed!â Then without a second to waste, he faced you once again then asked, âWould you like to go together?â
The question startled you. You didnât expect that. He was very bold, wasnât he? You had only just met and he was asking to spend probably what would be the rest of the day with you. You were flustered suddenly, then you were tongue-tied, lastly, you cracked your voice as you answered, âS-Sure! Yea- um--....â You felt your cheeks turn a little pink, âSorry. Itâs just... That was unexpected.â Just as you said that the loud horn of the ferry screamed as it pulled into the docks.Â
Alastor stood up while smiling down to you, âLife wouldnât be life if what you expected happened all the time.âÂ
He then held out his hand, offering to help you up from the bench. You took a moment, sitting there and taking everything in for what it was. Alastor stood before you, looking as though he was some kind of mathematician, or professor, now that you got a good look at him. His red tie was tucked behind a brown sweater vest that stopped just shy of his belt. His hand was offered to you, while the wind dusted his brown hair around in the breeze. And that smile on his face, it was soft yet firm enough to show that he was pleased to help you up.Â
So you decided then... why the hell not? He was right, life wouldnât be the same if it was exactly like what you expected. You took Alastorâs hand and pulled yourself to your feet. The two of you chatted while boarding the ferry, and then stood beside each other while leaning along the guard rails of the top deck.
The both of you talked about all kinds of things. You found out that Alastor was some kind of internet personality, not really. He had a podcast he ran and owned with some friends of his. It was apparently very popular and well known, though not that well known because youâve never heard of it before. And to say that didnât hurt Alastorâs ego a little would have been a lie. Apparently, Alastor also had a strong taste for liquor, because at one point he went to the ferryâs indoor bar and came back with two rum on the rocks.
You told him it was only noon, to which he replied, âItâs five oâclock somewhere,â And laughed before taking a sip of his drink. You decided to have the one he got you and told yourself itâd only be one which Alastor stayed true to. He didnât wander off for another drink once he finished the one he had. There was another point that you learned that Alastor had the habit of ignoring his phone, to the instance where he got annoyed with it and turned it off. It seemed he only wanted to focus on talking to you and listening to what you had to say.
Alastor and you talked the whole ferry ride, which was just under an hour long. And when you docked, you both walked side by side down the three and a half blocks to the aquarium. It wasnât a massive place, but it was a good size with a decent amount of animals. You originally came here with the idea of looking for inspiration within sea life. For you were an author, after all, writing stories for a living came with its ups and downs. For instance, right now, your much-needed vacation wasnât really a vacation. The current book you were working on took place in late century seaside town, much like this one. And you had run into the worse possible writerâs block youâve ever been in.Â
As you and Alastor had finished passing the entry gates and showing your tickets, you wondered why Alastor would want to come here with you. Maybe because he realized how terribly awkward it would be if you continued to cross paths all day. You also thought about how you wouldn't be able to focus on working with him around now. You also didnât really want to out yourself, or your current story.Â
But that would soon be unavoidable. You and Alastor had just made it to the open exhibits of the aquarium. You had stopped on an old wooden bridge to briefly look out at a beautiful koi pond. Alastor leaned over slightly while resting his arms on the bridge railing. He had a soft smile that was barely on his lips, âThis one oddly reminds me of home,â He sighed.Â
You learned along the railing as well, looking over the swampy like pond. It lily pads all over, with a dark green water filled with dead trees and moss. You couldnât see them, but you could hear the bullfrogs chirping away. Seeing it gave your a sudden surge of inspiration. Something about it made you get several ideas for your book. You couldnât let them slip away, so you reached into your bag and grabbed your notebook.
While you became lost in your own world, scribbling down idea after idea, Alastor quietly watched you. It wasnât in a way that you noticed, because heâd only take a side glance here or there. But after a moment or so, he finally asked, âForgot something to add to your grocery list?âÂ
It was meant to be a joke but it went right over your head (Mush to Alastorâs dismay).
âO-oh..â You then laughed weakly, âNo... Itâs for a story Iâm working on.âÂ
Alastor turned to face you slightly while still leaning on the rail, âOh, like an author?â
You took a dry swallow then glanced away and shrugged, âYea,â You didnât want to egg him on. But of course, he asked anyways.Â
âAre you published?â He seemed genuinely interested. Yet there was a reason you wanted to avoid it. Oftentimes when you told people about your books, the general reception wasn't that good. There was a reason you wrote under a pen name.Â
However, Alastor wasnât from around here, and you werenât on New York Timeâs Best Selling List yet, and probably never would be. So there was a chance he wouldnât know or ever heard of your books.Â
So you took the chance and said, âYeah. Iâm the author of Sea Rise.â
âOooh,â Shit. âThat book series about the pirates?â Dammit.Â
You felt your cheeks burn as you took in a deep breath and nodded your head, âYouâve heard of them?â You wouldnât look at him though. You just kept your gaze on some turtle resting on a log.Â
âYeah, never read them,â He gave a slight chuckle, âBut the girl I work with-â
âYou said her name is Charlie, right?â
âYes- Well, she reads âem. Sheâs a big fan. Iâm under the assumption that itâs about fictional pirates?âÂ
You took in a small breath then sighed, âPretty much. Itâs... not that amazing or anything. Itâs okay.â You noticed that Alastor pushed off the rail and started to walk again, but slower this time.
âTell me about it.â His words surprised you enough to look at him with a shocked expression. He laughed at you while giving a small wave of his hand, âOnly if you want to. Iâm sure you canât talk much about spoilers.â
You blinked, then let out a shaky laugh, âI-I donât know. Itâs... A long story. This is for my fourth installation.â
He hummed with a slight chuckle, âWell itâs a good thing there is a snack bar over there.â He pointed to one not that far away, âAnd plenty of places to sit too.âÂ
There was something that flickered around in your chest. You felt butterflies you always wrote about in your stories. You peered at Alastor finding it hard to stare at his face. You glanced up from his shoes and got caught in that tilt in his smirk. Heat ran to your cheeks and spread across your nose, you gave a sharp nod of your head then awkwardly stuttered out, âO-okay!â With maybe a little too much excitement. Who knew that today, of all days... Youâd run into someone like him.Â

oh I see !
just got merely curious, you do write good stuff imo and taking it slow should be a valid direction in the writing process (considering writers block)
but I guess I meant to ask how you have the motivation and energy to continue writing and producing said stories
to have the means on picking it back up throughout the months
and what your thought process goes through as well on planning your course of action - curios anon (also hope you don't mind me asking you so many things)
thanks for your kind words and ask! super long answer below.
motivation wise, i think its because 1) I want to see how the story ends, 2) the feedback that I get, 3) writing is fun.
1) A. im an organic writer which means sometimes i go in without a plan not knowing the ending and often not even knowing where im going with a story. sometimes i would sooort of know the general ending of the story but i have no idea how im going to get there. i write with very, very rough outline, if any at all. with one shots there are usually no outlines at all. im well aware this makes me sound like an irresponsible writer, which is not incorrect, but this method of writing is exciting to me.
every time i finish a fic im surprised at myself because i genuinely did not know how it was going to end. my favorite thing is when i write and i suddenly figure out why the character is doing what theyre doing, or what the story is trying to say. the eureka! moment. this happens to all of my stories bc i play by ear most of the time. its really thrilling to me to watch things play out as it happens, if that makes sense!
i think its why i love writing mysteries so much because the story is a mystery to me too. its like putting a puzzle together but you make the pieces yourself, and its so difficult but also so much fun. the moment everything is revealed, the moment i understand whats going on in the story, what the character wants, how everything falls together ... whoa. it makes everything worth it.
so yeah. i want to see how the story ends as much as (i hope!) the readers do.
B. its rare, but sometimes i do know what im trying to say with a story. this is usually for vent fics. and venting i believe is a really good thing to do in order to stay alive and stuff, yknow. its like taking a dump. you gotta get those shit out of yourself and put it out to the world so someone else would read the shit and would be like, "oh, i connect with this shit! i understand what this shit is trying to say!" and then you feel better. its free therapy and also free human connection
2) it cheers me up whenever a reader says the story makes them feel something, or if they manage to connect with it, which is the best thing ever. it feels great. and i do feel an obligation to continue a story because of this. whenever my multichap fics get a comment it does nudge something in me to actually open my google doc. if anyone who has ever commented on my stuff is reading this thank you SO much btw you dont even know.
3) writing is fun. thats it.
that being said, i run out of energy a lot. i do best when its a 20-25k story. longer than that and its hell to me personally. i think this will get better in time because back then i remember 10k was insane to me (i used to write 2k max) and so 20k was inconceivable--but here i am. 200k is inconceivable to me right now, but maybe it wont be in another five years.
i do encounter issues because of my (inadvisable) process. my issue is mostly continuity (because i dont write consistently). sometimes id realize something ive missed like details, or plot points that i shouldve brought up on earlier chapters, foreshadowings that ended up going nowhere ... things like that. i usually reread my own stuff before i update so i remember where im at. writing style change is also an issue.
all in all, this is bad practice and i dont recommend this. i think having a good outline and write consistently is the goal. i hope my process gets better but im ngl, i have a lot of fun with going blind. it keeps things from getting boring. and also i do think as time goes on im more daring to write things i wouldnt have before.
i.e at the beginning of writing retry i didnt want to write inko because i thought it was too difficult and i didnt think i could give that kind of character (a mother of a suicidal person) justice. but now inko has become a very important character. this wouldnt have happened if i had finished retry like, two years ago or something. me back then couldnt do it, but the me right now can. i do think despite all of its flaws, and also despite the fact that its incomplete, the fic has become much better for it because im ... older? more experienced? etc.
i dont think any of my fics will be "good" and "polished" compared to actual published books (or even other fics lol). i dont think thats my goal either. im just trying to go as far as i can go with them and maybe entertain a few people while im at it, and especially, entertain myself. thats where im at now in my writing. if you read this far... well, hope this makes sense.

i watched red vs blue: zero with my dear friends today and i was asked to âpostâ my âthoughtsâ on the subject. Please do not click this readmore unless, for some reason, you want to read three thousand words on the subject of red vs blue: zero critical analysis. i highly doubt thatâs the reason anyone is following me, but hey.Â
anyway. here you have it.Â
Here are my opinions on RVB0 as someone who has quite literally no nostalgia for any older RVB content. Iâve seen seasons 1-13 once and bits and pieces of it more than once here and there, but I only saw it for the first time within the past couple of months. Iâve literally never seen any other RT/AH content. I can name a few people who worked on OG Red vs. Blue but other than Mounty Oum I have NO idea who is responsible for what, really, or what anything else theyâve ever worked on is, or whether or not theyâre awful people. I know even less about the people making RVB0 - All I know is that the main writer is named Torrian but I honestly donât even know if thatâs a first name, a last name, or a moniker. All this to say; nothing about my criticism is rooted in any perceived slight against the franchise or branding by the new staff members, because I donât know or care about any of it. In fact, Iâm going to try and avoid any direct comparison between RVB0 and earlier seasons of RVB as a means of critique until the very end, where Iâll look at that relationship specifically.
So here is my opinion of RVB0 as it stands right now:
1. The Writing
Everything about RVB0 feels as if it was written by a first-time writer who hasnât learned to kill his darlings. The narrative is both simultaneously far too full, leaving very little breathing room for character interaction, and oddly sparse, with a story that lacks any meaningful takeaway, interesting ideas, or genuine emotional connection. It also feels like itâs for a very much younger audience - I donât mean this as a negative at all. I love tv for kids. I watch more TV for kids than I do for adults, mostly, but I think itâs important to address this because a lot of the time âthis is for kidsâ is used to act like youâre not allowed to critique a narrative thoroughly. It definitely changes the way you critique it, but the critique can still be in good faith. I watched the entirety of RVB0 only after it was finished, in one sitting, and I was giving it my full attention, essentially like it was a movie. Iâm going to assume it was much better to watch in chunks, because as it stood, there was literally no time built into the narrative to process the events that had just transpired, or try and predict what events might be coming in the future. When thereâs no time to think about the narrative as youâre watching it, the narrative ends up as being something that happens to the audience, not something they engage with. Itâs like the difference between taking notes during a lecture or just sitting and listening. If youâre making no attempt to actively process whatâs happening, it doesnât stick in your mind well. I found myself struggling to recall the events and explanations that had immediately transpired because as soon as one thing had happened, another thing was already happening, and it was like a mental juggling act to try and figure out which information was important enough to dwell on in the time we were given to dwell on it.
Which brings me to another point - pacing. Every event in the show, whether a character moment, a plot moment, or a fight scene, felt like it was supposed to land with almost the exact same amount of emotional weight. It all felt like The Most Important Thing that had Yet Happened. And I understand that this is done as an attempt to squeeze as much as possible out of a rather short runtime, but it fundamentally fails. When everything is the most important thing happening, it all fades into static. Thatâs what most of 0âs narrative was to me: static. Itâs only been a few hours since I watched it but I had to go step by step and type out all of the story beats I could remember and run it by my friends who are much more enthusiastic RVB fans than I am to make sure I hadnât missed or forgotten anything. I hadnât, apparently, but the fact that my takeaway from the show was pretty accurate and also disappointingly lackluster says a lot. Strangely enough, the most interesting thing the show alluded to - a holo echo, or whatever the term they used was - was one of the things least extrapolated upon in the showâs incredibly bulky exposition. Benefit of the doubt says thatâs something theyâll explore in future seasons (are they getting more? Is that planned? I just realized I donât actually know.)
And bulky it was! I have quite honestly never seen such flagrant disregard for the rule of âshow, donât tell.â There was not a single ounce of subtlety or implication involved in the storytelling of RVB0. Something was either told to you explicitly, or almost entirely absent from the narrative. Essentially zilch in between. We are told the dynamic the characters have with each other, and their personality pros and cons are listed for us conveniently by Carolina. The plot develops in exposition dumps. This is partially due to the seriesâ short runtime, but is also very much a result of how that runtime was then used by the writers. They sacrificed a massive chunk of their show for the sake of cramming in a ton of fight scenes, and if they wanted to keep all of those fight scenes, it would have been necessary to pare down their story and characters proportionally in comparison, but they didnât do that either. They wanted to have it both ways and there simply wasnât enough time for it.Â
The story itself is⌠uninteresting. It plays out more like the flimsy premise of a video game quest rather than a piece of media to be meaningfully engaged with. RVB0 is I think something I would be pitched by a guy who thinks the MCU and BNHA are the best storytelling to come out of the past decade. It is nothing but tropes. And I hate having to use this as an insult! I love tropes. The worst thing about RVB0 is that nothing it does is wholly unforgivable in its own right. Hunter x Hunter, a phenomenal shonen, is notoriously filled with pages upon pages of detailed exposition and explanations of things, and I absolutely love it. Leverage, my favorite TV show of all time, is literally nothing but a five man band who has to learn to work as a team while seemingly systematically hitting a checklist of every relevant trope in the book. Pacific Rim is an incredibly straightforward good guys vs giant monsters blockbuster to show off some cool fight scenes such as a big robot cutting an alien in half with a giant sword, and itâs some of the most fun I ever have watching a movie. Something being derivative, clunky, poorly executed in some specific areas, narratively weak, or any single one of these flaws, is perfectly fine assuming itâs done with the intention and care thatâs necessary to make the good parts shine more. Iâll forgive literally any crime a piece of media commits as long as itâs interesting and/or enjoyable to consume. RVB0 is not that. Iâm not sure what the main point of RVB0 was supposed to be, because it seemingly succeeds at nothing. It has absolutely nothing new or innovative to justify its lack of concern for traditional storytelling conventions. Based solely on the amount of screentime things were given, Iâd be inclined to say the narrative existed mostly to give flimsy pretense for the fight scenes, but thatâs an entire other can of worms.
2. The Visuals + Fights
I have no qualms with things that are all style and no substance. Sometimes you just want to see pretty colors moving on the screen for a while or watch some cool bad guys and monsters or whatever get punched. RVB0 was not this either. The show fundamentally lacked a coherent aesthetic vision. Much of the show had a rather generic sci-fi feel to it with the biggest standouts to this being the very noir looking cityscape, which my friends and I all immediately joked looked like something from a batman game, or the temple, which my friends and I all immediately joked looked like a world of warcraft raid. They were obviously attempting to get variety in their environment design, which I appreciate, but they did this without having a coherent enough visual language to feel like it was all part of the same world. In general, there was also just a lack of visual clarity or strong shots. The value range in any given scene was poor, the compositions and framing were functional at best, and the character animation was unpleasantly exaggerated. It just doesnât really look that good beyond fancy rendering techniques.
The fight scenes are their entire own beast. Since âFIGHT SCENEâ is the largest single category of scenes in the show, they definitely feel worth looking at with a genuine critical eye. Or, at least, Iâd like to, but honestly half the time I found myself almost unable to look at them. The camera is rarely still long enough to really enjoy what youâre watching - tracking the motion of the character AND the camera at such constant breakneck high speeds left little time to appreciate any nuances that might have been present in the choreography or character animation. I tried, believe me, I really did, but the fight scenes leave one with the same sort of dizzy convoluted spectacle as a Michael Bay transformers movie. They also really lacked the impact fight scenes are supposed to have.
Itâs hard to have a good, memorable fight scene without it doing one of three things: 1. Showing off innovative or creative fighting styles and choreography 2. Making use of the fightâs setting or environment in an engaging and visually interesting way or 3. Further exploring a characterâs personality or actions by the way they fight. Itâs also hard to do one of these things on its own without at least touching a bit on the other two. For the most part, I find RVB0âs fight scenes fail to do this. Other than rather surface level insubstantial factors, there was little to visually distinguish any of RVB0âs fight scenes from each other. Not only did I find a lot of them difficult to watch and unappealing, I found them all difficult to watch and unappealing in an almost identical way. They felt incredibly interchangeable and very generic. If you could take a fight scene and change the location it was set and also change which characters were participating and have very little change, itâs probably not a good fight scene.Â
I think âgenericâ is really just the defining word of RVB0 and I think thatâs also why it falls short in the humor department as well.
3. The Comedy
Funny shit is hard to write and humor is also incredibly subjective but I definitely got almost no laughs out of RVB0. I think a total of three. By far the best joke was Carolina having a cast on top of her armor, which, I must stress, is an incredibly funny gag and I love it. But overall I think the humor fell short because it felt like it was tacked on more than a natural and intentional part of this world and these characters. A lot of the jokes felt like they were just thrown in wherever theyâd fit, without any build up to punchlines and with little regard for what sort of joke each character would make. Like, there was some, obviously Raymondâs sense of humor had the most character to it, but the character-oriented humor still felt very weak. When focusing on character-driven humor, thereâs a LOT you can establish about characters based on what sort of jokes they choose to make, who theyâre picking as the punchlines of these jokes, and who their in-universe audience for the jokes is. In RVB0, the jokes all felt very immersion-breaking and self aware, directed wholly towards the audience rather than occurring as a natural result of interplay between the characters. This is partially due to how lackluster the character writing was overall, and the previously stated tight timing, but also definitely due to a lack of a real understanding about what makes a joke land.Â
A rule of thumb I personally hold for comedy is that, when push comes to shove, more specific is always going to be more funny. The example I gave when trying to explain this was this:
saying two characters had awkward sex in a movie theater: funny
saying two characters had an awkward handjob in a cinemark: even funnier
saying two characters spent 54 minutes of 11:14's 1:26 runtime trying out some uncomfortably-angled hand stuff in the back of a dilapidated cinemark that lost funding halfway through retrofitting into a dinner theater: the funniest
The more specific a joke is, the more it relies on an in-depth understanding of the characters and world youâre dealing with and the more ârealisticâ it feels within the context of your media. Especially with this kind of humor. When youâre joking with your friends, you donât go for stock-humor that could be pulled out of a joke book, you go for the specific. You aim for the weak spots. If a set of jokes could be blindly transplanted into another world, onto another cast of characters, then itâs far too generic to be truly funny or memorable. I donât think thereâs a single joke in RVB0 where the humor of it hinged upon the characters or the setting.
Then thereâs the issue of situational comedy and physical comedy. This is really where the humor being âtacked onâ shows the most. Once again, part of what makes actually solid comedy land properly is it feeling like a natural result of the world you have established. Real life is absurd and comical situations can be found even in the midst of some pretty grim context, and thatâs why black comedy is successful, and why comedy shows are allowed to dip into heavier subject matter from time to time, or why dramas often search for levity in humor. Itâs a natural part of being human to find humor in almost any situation. The key thing, though, once again, is finding it in the situation. Many of RVB0âs attempts at humor, once again, feel like they would be the exact same jokes when stripped from their context, and thatâs almost never good. A pretty fundamental concept in both storytelling in general but particularly comedy writing is âsetup and payoffâ. No joke in RVB0 is a reward for a seemingly innocuous event in an earlier scene or for an overlooked piece of environmental design. The jokes pop in when thereâs time for them in between all the exposition and fighting, and are gone as soon as theyâre done. Thereâs no long term, underlying comedic throughline to give any sense of coherence or intent to the sense of humor the show is trying to establish. Every joke is an isolated one-off quip or one-liner, and it fails to engage the audience in a meaningful way.
All together, each individual component of RVB0 feels like it was conjured up independently, without any concern to how it interacted with the larger product they were creating. And I think this is really where it all falls apart. RVB0 feels criminally generic in a way reminiscent of mass-market media which at least has the luxury of attributing these flaws, this complete and total watering down of anything unique, to heavy oversight and large teams with competing visions. But I donât think thatâs the case for RVB0. I donât know much about what the pipeline is like for this show, but I feel like the fundamental problem it suffers from is a lack of heart.
In comparison to Red vs. Blue
Let's face it. This is a terrible successor to Red vs. Blue. I wouldnât care if NONE of the old characters were in it - thatâs not my problem. I havenât seen past season 13 because from what I heard the show already jumped the shark a bit and then some. Thatâs not what makes it a poor follow up. What makes it a bad successor is that it fundamentally lacks any of the aspects of the OG RVB that made it unique or appealing at all. I find myself wondering what Torrian is trying to say with RVB0 and quite literally the only answer I find myself falling back onto is that he isnât trying to say anything at all. Regardless of what you feel about the original RVB, it undeniably had things to say. The opening âwhy are we hereâ speech does an excellent job at establishing that this is a show intended to poke fun at the misery of bureaucracy and subservience to nonsensical systems, not just in the context of military life, but in a very broad-strokes way almost any middle-class worker can relate to. At the end of the day, fiction is at its best when it resonates with some aspect of its audienceâs life. I know instantly which parts of the original Red vs Blue Iâm supposed to relate to. I canât say anything even close to that about 0.
RVB is an absurdist parody that heavily satirizes aspects of the military and life as a low-on-the-food-chain worker in general that almost itâs entire target audience will be familiar with. The most significant draw of the show to me was how the dialogue felt like listening to my friends bicker with each other in our group chats. It required no effort for me to connect with and although the narrative never outright looked to the camera and explained âwe are critiquing the militaryâs stupid red tape and self-fullfilling eternal conflictâ they didnât need to, because the writing trusted itself and its audience enough to believe this could be conveyed. It is, in a way, the complete antithesis to the badass superhero macho military man protagonist that we all know so well. RVB was saying something, and it was saying it in a rather novel format.
Nothing about RVB0 is novel. Nothing about RVB0 says anything. Nothing about it compels me to relate to any of these characters or their situations. RVB0 doesnât feel like absurdism, or satire. RVB0 feels like it is, completely uncritically, the exact media that RVB itself was riffing off of. Both RVB0 and RVB when you watch them give you the feeling that what youâre seeing here is kids on a playground larping with toy soldiers. Itâs all ridiculous and over the top cliche stupid garbage where each side is trying to one-up the other. The critical difference is, in RVB, weâre supposed to look at this and laugh at how ridiculous this is. In RVB0 weâre supposed to unironically think this is all pretty badass.Â
The PFL arc of the original RVB existed to show us that setting up an elite team of supersoldiers with special powers was something done in bad faith, with poor outcomes, that left everyone involved either cruel, damaged, or dead. It was a bad thing. And what weâre seeing in RVB0 is the same premise, except, this time itâs good. Weâre supposed to root for this format. RVB0 feels much more like a demo reel, cutscenes from a video game that doesnât exist, or a shonen anime fanboyâs journal scribbling than it feels like a piece of media with any objective value in any area. In every area that RVB was anti-establishment, RVB0 is pure undiluted establishment through and through. Â

My Anime 9/10â˛s
With probably no spoilers cuz I donât wanna talk too long about them zzz.
1. Fullmetal Alchemist
YALL ALREADY KNOW THIS A 9/10. The only real reason this show is not a 10/10 is because itâs just a story that Iâd never rewatch. Thereâs like 70 episodes, which is way too long for my short attention span, especially since Iâve seen it already. But yeah, by all accounts, this story is a masterpiece and is one of the only âshounenâ animeâs that I genuinely enjoyed. No random sexualization. No dumb filler. All the characters have an actual purpose and role in the plot and everyone has their own morals and ideals that interact to make the story interesting. I couldnât bring myself to really hate anyone, even the villains, because everyone was pretty well written. Also super satisfying ending that ties up everything properly without leaving me confused or upset. If you only watch a few anime in your life, Fullmetal Alchemist is pretty much a MUST WATCH to see a beautiful example of a modern classic anime as an artform. Also I should say that I really donât like Hunter x Hunter (AN EXTREMELY CONTROVERSIAL OPINION BTW) but I love Fullmetal Alchemist so take from that what you will.
2. Parasyte: The Maxim
Same kinda shit where you already know this a 9/10 for me. Itâs just a very satisfying anime that doesnât have random sexualization or random filler or anything like that. Ending is also very good and ties up the story in a way that doesnât leave more questions but also allows the characters to have a âlifeâ outside of the scope of the story. I think Parasyte, because of its more horror and psychological-esque vibes, counts as a seinen and not a shounen, so for more mature audiences. I also really liked how the story was successfully adapted to modern times since the manga is from the 80â˛s. I have actually rewatched this anime, but what stops me from giving it a 10/10 is a few things that I found kinda âstereotypicalâ that I donât wanna discuss further too much cuz itâs spoilers. I still obviously really like this anime and highly recommend it.
3. Zankyou no Terror
TBH, this anime is pretty hard for me to properly describe in a lot of words as to why I like it. The art was really pretty as well as the music, which was just straight up amazing. The cinematography of this anime is excellent as well, and a lot of scenes have that sense of being acted out by real people, as opposed to feeling completely drawn/animated. I was a teenager when this anime came out and I think a lot of the themes presented in the show really related to me. The show does kinda have some leftover questions when it ends that prevents me from rating it a 10/10, but I have such a soft spot for this anime. Itâs from the same creator as Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop, and although those two animes are also very good, they did not impact me as much as this anime did. Recommended for people looking for idk something that gives off Inception vibes?? In the sense that itâs much more about its themes and its message more so than the believability of the events that occur.
4. Magic Kaito 1412
THIS IS JUST A PERSONAL PREFERENCE BTW LOLOL I DONâT KNOW ANYBODY WHOâD PUT THIS AS A 9/10 ANIME. I JUST REALLY LIKED IT OKAY. Itâs made by the same person who does Detective Conan but I like this a lot more because itâs a much shorter series and slightly more mature (more for teens than just straight up kids). I really liked the main guy, I think heâs funny and charismatic. Heâs a pervert at times but Imma forgive that cuz of the 90â˛s. Idk itâs just a really fun anime that I donât have to take seriously and can just watch and enjoy.
5. Mob Psycho 100 (season 1 AND 2)
Imma put season two as slightly better than season one. So season one would be like a 9 and season two is like a 9.25 for me. Super super funny anime and I like it SO much more than One Punch Man. I liked that there was a good balance of serious moments, but you can definitely still count this anime as a comedy. Iâm typically not the type to watch âcomedyâ but this anime genuinely had me laughing out loud, while also crying and freaking out right alongside the main character. The main guy is super great because heâs just this shy and sweet middle schooler, and itâs really interesting watching him balance trynna have a normal life while also using his powers for good and such. Apparently the anime was decently faithful to the manga and thereâs apparently enough material for a third season so Iâd be pretty stoked for a season 3, but season 2 ended on a pretty good spot and was satisfying. TBH, if I had the time, Iâd probably rewatch both seasons and bump it up to a 10/10.
6. Vinland Saga
This anime is just the first season of what I hopes to be a whole series that will be stay beautifully and faithfully adapted from the manga. As someone who read very far into the manga (but quit like years ago simply because I hate slow updates lol), I actually didnât enjoy watching the anime at first. I was impatient and kept waiting for when like the âmajorâ events would happen. So I watched like three episodes and quit. But when I had some free time, I decided to get stuck in and commit to watching the whole series and I was so pleasantly surprised with just how good it was. I was impatient but I needed to realize that there is no âfillerâ or like âwasted timeâ in the entire anime. I hadnât read the manga in years, so so many things were only vaguely familiar but I think this helped me stay surprised and excited throughout the anime. Iâm looking forward to the rest of the manga being adapted because itâs just a good Viking saga lolol. Major themes of stuff like growing up, violence vs. peace, what it means to be a good person, etc. Lots of blood and LOTS of violence like a LOT they are VIKINGS CMON but tbh not really any gore which I liked cuz gore makes me ughhhh. A very good watch and only a taste of an excellent story.
7. Demon Slayer
Itâs just Demon Slayer duhhh. Of course this a 9/10 for me. I donât wanna write much just cuz the show is so popular. Just read a REAL review of this anime somewhere else lmaoooo. Also yes I did watch the movie in theaters and yes I liked it a lot as well mmkay. Iâm mad hype for season two. My S/O doesnât like Demon Slayer as much as me, but also has Hunter x Hunter as their all time favorite anime. Do with that information what you will lolol.
8. Attack on Titan Season 3 Part 2
Same shit as Demon Slayer. Just go read someone elseâs review about why itâs so good lol. Also, unlike Mob Psycho 100, I canât include all of the seasons in this, because I have very various opinions about how good/bad the other seasons were. But this season 3 part 2, was just plain and simply amazing. While I might not like each season equally, as a whole Attack on Titan is also a modern masterpiece of storytelling. Read the manga if you can.
9. Great Pretender
I love this anime so much. Such a good and fun wild ride. The whole show is ridiculous but in a fun way. Iâm a HUGE fan of heist films, so of course I absolutely enjoyed a heist anime. Iâve watched this show in sub AND dub, due to the fact that everyone is âtechnicallyâ speaking English the entire time. If youâre a purist, just watch in sub OR dub cuz I did get confused here and there, especially when I would go back to compare language discrepancies. Because basically I did this super high maintenance thing where I switched back to Japanese whenever the main character had flashbacks, since heâs ya know, Japanese. The dub also has this confusing thing where the first five minutes or so are still in Japanese, but switches to English when a little cue card on the screen goes âFor the Viewers sake, everything from now on will be translated to Japanese.â Itâs cuz in the sub, the inverse obviously happens where the characters are initially speaking broken English to each other, but for convenience sake, everything from that point on will be in Japanese. Itâs confusing at first but I liked it cuz it just proved the whole international vibe of the show. Itâs funny either sub or dub when they joke about how bad the main guy speaks English, cuz in the dub heâs speaking perfect English, while the sub has him not speaking English at all. But anyway, great anime that WOULD have gotten a 10/10 if not for the last episode. Like without spoiling ... WTF WAS THAT LMAOOOO. The anime as a whole is super wacky and zany but at least I could try to think itâs real life, but that last episode was just so unbelievable and bizarre and pulled my suspension of disbelief into the STRATOSPHERE that I just had to convince myself that this show takes place in some improbable alternate reality where something like what happened in the last episode is at least 5 percent possible CUZ HOW DID ANY OF THAT WORK LMAOOO??? Once again, great show, one of my absolute favorites, BUT THAT ENDING THOUGH WTF.
10. BNA
Good super underrated anime that I donât hear people talk about at all. If Beastars is anime Zootopia, then BNA is Disney Beastars lmaooo does that make sense? Itâs a lot more fun and zany than Beastars and I liked it way more. Made by the same people who made Kill la Kill. I really like that more classic, animated âcheapâ art style that the anime has, and I also really liked the plot of the story. Not a 10/10 cuz the show does leave a few unanswered questions at the end of it, but this show was such a fun and interesting ride. When I finished the last episode, I was left with a big smile on my face because I just genuinely enjoyed this anime. Recommended if you wanna watch something a little unique and more on the silly and wack side. Talks about some serious stuff, but luckily the show never takes itself TOO seriously, and remains overall lighthearted for a fun action/sci-fi show.

You make your mind up when you run into a certain someone one night.
Sam and Sully had gone to Las Vegas. âJust because,â Sam reasoned. He needed to forget how empty he felt whenever it was nighttime and he was lonely in bed.
Instead, he and Sully gambled, outsmarting each other in their own games. At the end of the night, Sam would go to the nearest bar to drink. Thatâs where he was reunited with Victoria, an old flame he had just before Panama.
Victoria â or Vix â as he called her, was a nice enough woman. She was as loud as he remembered her and he genuinely did have fun with her, and there was an understanding between them: it was just sex.
He'd take her to his RV every night, and every single time he fucked her, he thought of you. As he dug his fingers into the soft skin of her hips, he closed his eyes, imagining you, drowning out the sounds of her moans. He couldn't understand how he became so attached to you but no other person.
It was then the telephone started ringing. Sam sighed, considering his options. He wasn't close yet and he wasn't in a hurry so he got up and hobbled to the phone.
âYeah?â Sam leaned against the wall, expecting it to be Sully calling from his five-star hotel room, but there was no response.
âCome on, Sam, don't keep me waiting,â Victoria whined. âI was so close.â
âJust a second,â he turned away from her. âHello? Hello?â
The line cut out, leaving Sam confused. Must've been a wrong number.
He drove Sully back to California the next day, feeling a little sad about being back in Paso Robles. It didn't stop him from looking around as he drove, hoping to get a glance of you â that is, if you stayed in the area.
âI've gotta say that was the first Vegas trip I've been on where I haven't made any life altering decisions,â Sully mused. âHell, that was the mildest experience I've had.â
âJeez, Victor, sorry I made it lame,â Sam joked. Deep down they knew they were too old to get shit faced drunk and make horrible decisions just after a few nights in Las Vegas.
âAh, maybe next time,â Sully picked up his bags as Sam parked in front of his mid-century style home. âWhat's next for Samuel Drake?â
âUh,â Sam thought. âGonna visit a special lady named Irene, then hopefully my business partner can find another job for us.â
âOh, Irene,â Sully chuckled.
âAh, so you know her,â Sam smiled.
âThe â70âs were a wild time, Sam,â Sully winked, confirming yours and Samâs suspicions.
âWell, good for you, Victor. She's still single, just so you know.â
âRight,â Sully laughed. âHey, maybe you should go up to Los Angeles, just see the sights. Weatherâs nice this time of the year.â
Huh , Sam thought to himself. He hasn't been in LA in years. It won't hurt to stop by.
âSure, Victor. I'll send you a postcard.â
âThere's an open house this weekend,â Stephen said over the phone. âI hope you understand.â
âYeah, I'm totally cool with it.â You lay in the hammock of your backyard, smoking a cigarette and mindlessly scrolled through social media. Sam was always on your Instagram, giving you just a glimmer of hope.
âI'll call as much as I can. I love you.â
You paused, chewing on you lip. âI'll see you soon, Steve.â
You felt the tiniest pang of guilt as you felt a bit of relief to be away from Stephen for two weeks. As much as you tried, you couldn't love him. Sam was still in your mind and everytime you had sex with Stephen, you thought about Sam. It just didn't feel as good.
It didn't stop you from being racked with guilt. You didn't want to be with Stephen, but you didn't want to be lonely.
I'm a horrible person and I had the audacity to call Sam a selfish bastard, you let out an angry puff of smoke. Maybe we are a lot more alike than I thought.
You groaned as you slid off the hammock hanging on your back porch and padded your way into your kitchen to get a drink. The silence was overwhelming while you poured yourself a glass of orange juice.
You retired to your room and climbed into your cold, empty bed. You hated the silence. You missed Samâs voice as he talked on and on about something that excited him.
You read and reread the letter he wrote you in the hospital. It was short but it was enough to make you miss him every time.
I'm sorry. No one's ever done anything like that for me and I feel horrible. Please get better. I'll make you pancakes like I promised long ago.

The landline phone caught your attention. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to hear his voice just for a bit.
You hastily got up and walked to the phone, mind racing as you picked up the receiver. You assured yourself it was fine and that Sam never had a caller ID.
Here goes, you held your breath as you dialed his number, dreading the ringing tones.
It kept ringing and you were scared it'll go to voicemail, but after a while, Sam finally picked up.
âYeah?â He was out of breath.
Just that one word made your heart leap. You opened your mouth to say something when you heard someone in the background.
âCome on, Sam, don't keep me waiting,â a woman said in a sultry voice. âI was so close.â
âJust a second,â Sam called out. âHello? Hello?â
You hung up. That was a terrible idea.
Irene was overjoyed to see Sam, peppering his face in kisses.
âOh, you've grown so tall!â She joked. âIt's so nice to see you, Sam.â
âYou know I can't stay away from my favourite weed lady,â he chuckled.
âAre you staying long?â
âNah, just dropping by to say âhiâ.â
âWell âhiâ to you too,â she smiled.
She gave him a pan of banana bread (and some weed) before he left, asking if he ever got to see you. He wished he did.
You lay on the floor of your living room, music blasting on the stereo as you had a pity party. You had to end things with Stephen as the guilt was becoming too much for you to bear.
You had put the ring back on, staring at it as you held your hand up. You needed a drink.
The fluorescent lights of the store were a little too bright for you and you trudged to the fridge, ignoring the guy manning the cashier.
âYou look like shit again,â he remarked.
ââKay, thanks for the input, Troy,â you muttered. Asshole.
You grabbed a few bottles of beer, hugging them to your chest. Just another Friday night.
âSorry, I need a pack of cigarettes⌠Or two,â you heard a familiar voice. You peeked behind a shelf of condoms.
It was Sam. What the hell is he doing in LA and in this particular store too?
Fuck. You began to panic, glancing down at yourself. The grey sweatpants and your stained DIY shirt you painted years ago wasnât the most flattering outfit and it didn't help that your hair was a mess.
You wanted him to just go, but through your panicked state, you dropped one of the bottles in your arms, catching Samâs attention.
âY/N?â He looked at you curiously.
âHeyy, Sam,â you sheepishly stepped away from the mess on the floor.
âClean up on aisle two,â Troy mumbled, grabbing the broom and a mop.
âSorry, I'll pay for that,â you tiptoed past him.
âNo, I'll pay for it,â Sam looked at you, a smile tugging at the corner of his lip. Your heart leaped when you met his gentle eyes. âThat's a lot of bottles.â
âTGIF, right?â You awkwardly laughed. Idiot.
âCan't argue with that,â Sam smiled.
Troy totalled up yours and Samâs purchases after a lot of whining. Sam helped you carry your bottles of beer.
âWhere ya heading?â He asked.
âHome. It's not too far from here.â
âCome on, I'll give you a lift,â he nudged you.
âNo, it's fine,â you shook your head.
âYou don't wanna see my snazzy new tiny home?â
âTiny home,â you chuckled. âYeah, sure I'd love to see it.â
Sam had a nice little RV with his motorcycle secured on it. It wasn't too fancy inside; his books were neatly organised on a small shelf by the sofa/dining area, the plants you left him on a box by the window, and a large bed in the back with just a curtain for privacy.
âWow,â you looked around. âWhat made you wanna get an RV?â
âEh, just wanted to be able to move around easier,â he shrugged as he sat in the driver's seat. âIt's not permanent, but it's been alright so far.â
You took the seat next to him, fastening your seatbelt.
âWhere to?â Sam asked.
âIts just a few blocks away. Go west.â
It was supposed to be a short drive, but it felt longer to you. You didn't know what to say and neither did Sam, just Spandau Ballet softly playing on the radio filling in the silence.
âSo,â Sam cleared his throat. âLA⌠Why? You planning on being in Hollywood?â
You shrugged. âI've always lived in smaller towns, I thought a bigger city might be an experience.â
âRight,â he nodded. âDo you like it?â
âIt's been alright,â you shrugged again. âI haven't gotten around to exploring as much. Oh, it's just here.â
You pointed at the one-story Spanish revival house you've been staying in. Sam parked in front and you picked up your paper bag, heavy with the bottles.
âLet me help you with that,â Sam reached out, his hand touching your arm. It was enough to make you feel hot all over.
He locked eyes with you and for a moment, you thought he was leaning in to kiss you. You instinctively closed your eyes, waiting, but nothing happened.
When you opened your eyes, Sam was holding the paper bag and walking towards the door.
Oh, you were disappointed. What was I expecting?
He walked you to the door, his eyes on you the entire time.
âI missed you,â he said, making your heart leap again.
âSam,â you looked up at him as you reached your door.
âSorry,â he sighed. âI just⌠Couldn't get you out of my mind in months, I had to say it.â
âI missed you too,â you softly said.
This time, you felt his lips on yours, and you instinctively kissed him back. There were butterflies in your stomach, but the moment didn't last.
Sam stepped back, his face a little flushed. You felt your cheeks heat up as well.
He held out the paper bag to you. âUm, good night.â
âGood nightâŚâ You whispered as he turned to go back to his RV. âSam, waitââ
He looked back, and you walked towards him.
âYou can park in my driveway for the night⌠Or however long you're going to stay here.â
âI don't want to be a burdenââ
