while were on the topic of gideo the ninth, can i ask what those books are about? like whats going on there whats the general premise of the world? i really wanna read them when i get the time but i really prefer knowing a bit before going in!

hmm well its a bit hard to describe (theres a post going around about how gtn's tagline "lesbian necromancers in space!" isnt very accurate, but also how else are you gonna explain this series in a coincise manner)

basically its a scifi/fantasy story set 10000 years in the future. something happened that caused the end of the world, with only a few people surviving and society being reworked into that of the nine houses, led by god, the emperor undying, the necrolord prime, the kindly prince, blah blah blah. who cares about that guy. lets talk about the lesbians

gideon is the protagonist of book one. her entire deal is that she hates the 9th house and wants to get the hell out of there, but she cant. harrow, the frenemy/gf, simply wont let her. why? because she hates her fucking guts (gideon feels the same), and also because gideon knows the truth behind some fucked up shit involving harrow that she cant afford to let out

gideon's chance to escape comes in the form of god sending a missive to the heads of each house (excluding the first house, which is what used to be earth and is basically just a graveyard now) asking for them to send their necromantically inclined heirs + their cavs so they may undertake the process of becoming lyctors, the emperor's immortal (almost) hands, because ummm well most of them fuckin died over these 10000 years and he needs a few more lol

each pair is composed of a necromancer and a cavalier. harrow is going as the necromancer for the 9th house, and she would like gideon to come with as her cav because gideon is the coolest most badass sword lady thats ever been produced by the 9th house since this one twink called matthias nonius

gideon would like for her to choke on a dick and die, but eventually agrees to come as harrow promised to finally set her free if she just does this one thing

so then they get to the first house and start playing a very nice friendly game of among us with everyone else and nothing bad ever happens :)

ok final terror thoughts below

firstly. emotionally it wrecked me and i am considering buying it on dvd so i do sort of think it might be the best show ever made. however my official view is - very good at dread and suspense, character writing was up and down and papered over by good acting

pros:

- goodsir, crozier & franklin standout characters in terms of writing

- ships are cool

cons:

- silna silna silna i think nive nielsen is an incredible actor who gave silna a huge amount of depth in part because of the fact that there really was very little there otherwise. the fact that she loses her tongue early on is pretty unfortunate in that regard but even so i think she was mostly relegated to magical indigenous woman/goodsir character development. and given that she was obviously the main netsilik character we actually get to talk with that was a major disappointment for me

- tbh not to be that guy but i do think the story would’ve been better without tunbaaq. like i get it in the sense that it is just fun to imagine a supernatural element to the franklin expedition, but it’s a good enough story without that and i kiiiind of think it did cheapen the otherwise pretty solid themes of civilisation, empire, and dignity in the face of suffering etc. i don’t see what “and there’s a weird bear” adds to this. but maybe im just being a hater here.

- pretty torn on hickey in the sense that. idk. i generally do like when antagonists are left ambiguous but i think…hmmm it just didn’t land for me i LOVED when he was being a funny little scamp but murdering farr felt like it came somewhat out of the blue mostly because he was so intense about it. hmm. idk. maybe i should put hickey in a middle ambivalent section because i’m so undecided but yeah. hmm.

- i think fitzjames was a pretty missed opportunity character wise frankly. the show positions him as stepping into secondary protagonist role after franklin dies but he’s then mostly static throughout eps 4 & 5, there’s some interesting stuff in 6, but most of his real character moments come in 8 which is obviously only right before he dies in 9 anyway. up to ep 3 he’s got a good thing going as franklin’s yes-man with better social skills but from there i just don’t think the show spends enough time with him on his own to really do much with him. similar to silna i think tobias menzies is a good enough actor to cover this and it’s more a problem with a big ensemble cast than anything but we got more depth for franklin three episodes than we did for fitzjames in 9 which i think was disappointing. mostly because what we do get would have been a pretty good vector for the broader themes of victorian sensibilities breaking down in the arctic for better or worse

GUYS so, ages ago i put glow in the dark stars under the desk in my room (not the one used as a nightstand) and I made them into my constellations

and ive been Feelin ' It today and so I made a nest under it, turned out all the lights had my Bear (Beary) and watched my favourite creators (Alayna Joy and Ashley Gavin, it was the WHGS podcast) and it was really really nice, and I recommend anyone with space and emotions to make them a little place just for them <3
