Why don’t Kpop fans ever talk about Kangta’s “Eyes On You” more? I rewatched the video recently and was floored by how simplistic the choreography was, how gorgeous the video was, and how sexy the song was? From the song down to the choreography, it just was really refreshing to see and have and I can’t believe it flopped, but thank god Kangta is long past the point of needing albums to sell millions in order to feed all his dogs 😭
LITERALLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY i've been trying to get people onto eyes on you for MONTHS kangta is an og for a REASON!!!!!!!!!!! the mv is fucking gorgeous, the costuming is SO cool, the lighting is spectacular, the choreo is well suited to his age + generation, the song is soooooooooo fucking good (it's a dem jointz track!), what more do you people want!!! i'm so glad he's like the most secure artist at sm so his 85 dogs are always gonna be fed even tho kpoppies will never appreciate him 😭😭😭

heck yeaaahhhhh!! thank u for the tag @hrodvitnon !!!!
so yeah i've been listening to the signalis soundtrack on repeat for like two months.
in no particular order (maybe a bit):
-20. Eulenlieder. this is the song that plays in the EULR dorm. for some reason it makes me feel very emotional..i felt so bad for all the little eules (10 out of 12 bed posts) that populated the dorm with their singing, dancing and being silly in front of the mirror.
the christmas lights (sorry i don't know the name) make everything even sadder. the dorm stayed as it was before everything went horrible; it's like time stopped in there. i love little eules so much..they did nothing wrong. the eule alone in the third floor is so scared. almost no one is there for her anymore..
-47. Teeth. i love this song. it conveys the...desolation and hopelessness of the situation (ariane losing her teeth due to radiation poisoning. there's nothing she could have done, especially without being able to be cured.)
now, we don't know what dose she and elster may have absorbed in the penrose 512 when the reactor coolant started leaking, but from her notes, it seems like it was a slow as hell death. it may have been radiation sickness, but it definitely wasn't terribly acute, as they'd have died (at least for ariane. i don't know how much sensitive replika are to radiation, even if we know they are thanks to the medical reports; they're probably slightly more resistant compared to humans, as the "do not eat replika biocomponents" states that replika have an 830% odds of surviving compared to gestalts, but maybe that's due to other factors like not being able to get fractured) in a few weeks at most without treatment.
-48. Double Back (VHS version). this one is much better than the regular version. it plays when isa becomes goo (sorry isa.), so when you find the death tarot card. it truly matches the situation, where you find that...everything is actually not too real in there (actually from nowhere, where shit hits the fan and ariane fleshes everything), as isa and her sister were dead already (shown by the altar where you pick the card up).
actually this makes me think about...uh....isa was looking for her sister in s-23 sierpinski already. well shiver me timbers. elster is mentally ill (we love our mentally ill queen)
-10. Train Ride is definitely a big favorite of mine. (i cried to this song after finishing signalis for a week in a row) i don't know what is it about this song that is incredibly heartwrenching and nostalgic; that's also the first time you properly encounter ariane in-game if i'm not mistaken, and it...feels so magical. it is a calm moment between all the shit that is going down in s-23 sierpinski, and you're confused as hell because you don't know what a rotfront is. so that little moment you share with a person you see the first time, which you know it is important as she is shown in the title drop, feels...a bit familiar.
i wonder what imagery there is behind ariane dropping the gold key. all the other keys have an easy meaning to understand (water key in the flooded bathroom, air key in the vent, fire key in the incinerator, earth key (blank key) is stuck in a rock).
-46. Blockwart and all the fighting songs actually (incinerator, intensive care, mynah, riot control and im sure i'm forgetting another or two) . they are so hyping and they're a delight to listen to!
okay after rambling a lot (sorry) we come to the honorable mention: the Misery x CPR x Reese's Puffs which lived rent free in my mind for a week thanks to this video (warning: signalis spoilers). i got obsessed to the point of making a three channel version of the short version because i felt like its potential was wasted by mashing it up all together. (sorry can't upload wavs so you'll get the shitty mp3 version. unfortunately it is not 5.12 seconds long)
tagging! @some-creep, @limayde , @henry-writes , @comfycookie404 and whoever likes songs and would like to do this!
This was originally going to be a reblog of another post here, but it seems the original poster has since turned off reblogs. Still, I already had all this typed up and linked, and didn't want it to go to waste, so in a similar image, here's my top five songs/music tracks on the brain during the last fortnight:
Top five songs at the moment:
'Wolf in Sheep's Clothing' by Set It Off
'The Owl House' OST "For the Future" Main Title Theme
'Land of Confusion' by Hidden Citizens
'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' OST "A Mass Awakening"
The 'Final Space' OST which plays when the Lord Commander betrays Invictus (I'm no sure what the OST's name is)
A couple honourable mentions: 'Spirit of Chaos' by Aviators, and 'Monarch: Legacy of Monsters' OST "Homecoming."
Tagging if you want to take part: @lordofthefans @tosho89 @hrodvitnon @malarkay @princess-peregrine

people i feel like would like to see this: @loth-wolffe @weirdcharacter @ladykatakuri @ahsokasleftbicep
———
happier by olivia rodrigo but it’s ten times sadder
by wisterxiaa
i love slowed versions of songs, that is like the way to my heart lol 😂 this is really nice, her voice sounds really cool slowed down like this. the electric guitar in like the middle sounds so cool omgg. is it sad? yeah, a little, but it’s really nice slowed down like this. most of the time, the titles say this in my playlist, but i just like the way it’s slowed lol 😂. the thumbnail is so pretty 9/10, love the purple and the monarch butterflies :) overall, recommend this song when your in the mood for some olivia rodrigo, but a tad bit sadder. AND THE OOH’S AT THE END HIT DIFFERENT OMGGGG AND SHE SOUNDS SO BROKEN AND SOFT AT THE END APOBIHJ[OADSIJB
everybody loves somebody - dean martin (slowed n reverb)
by starclouds
pretty sure i got this song from General Angsty (if i didn’t, apologizes), but this slowed down verison HITS THE SPOT. i love his voice in this slowed way, it is so interesting. also, it’s reverb? like? yes, please. the thumbnail is actually a GIF that is a fountain, it’s pretty cool, 7/10, also this makes me wanna sway with like Echo or something (actually now that i think of it, i’m pretty sure i got this from General Angsty’s dancing post with the boys, which made me so SoFt omg :)) overall, recommend listen to this when you wanna sway with your lover in like a dance club, but your nestled into their neck and your pulled so close and it’s warm in their embrace :) the instruments also are really nice in this verison.
Clair De Lune Ethereal Remix
by A.Krishna
IF ALL MUSIC SUDDENLY BECAME ETHEREAL ON YOUTUBE, I WOULD MOST LIKELY CRY. so i love ethereal remixes, there’s just something so… whimsical about ethereal remixes. this song is so pretty and beautiful on ethereal omgggGGGg. the thumbnail is beautiful 10000000/10. I just- this sounds like a song you would use as like a look back through your entire life, like every memory and moment just appearing as this song plays WOW. and when the piano climax’s in the midDLE OMGGGG it is INSANE, LIKE THE EMOTIONS THAT GO THROUGH MY BRAIN AOBIASDNB and then it gets super soft and quiet aaaahhhh CAN YOU TELL I LIKE ETHEREAL?? IDK IF YOU CAN 😂 anyways, overall recommend this song when your just watching the rain fall and reminiscing about good times in your life :)
heather - conan gray ( slowed + reverb)
by Vibey
okay definitely this song is sadder slowed, like THE FEELS OMGG but it’s amazing slowed, like the original is awesome, AND THEN THIS???!! so the thumbnail is a really pretty GIF of this VHS tape just playing, and it’s purple so 10/10. this definitely brings the raspy part of his voice, and i really like it (or that’s just the reverb lol 😂) only thing i do not like about this slowed version is it cuts off the end of the song at the end of the video, and I don’t know why, but it’s still really good, so i don’t mind too much :). it’s very pretty and sad all at the same time. overall, recommend listening to this song when your just chilling, staring up at the ceiling and your like “let’s be a puddle of sad for a sec”
Chiquitita(slowed+reverbed)💜
by Brown Aesthetic Syndrome
LIL’ SOKA, IT’S OUR SONG!! OUR SONG SLOWED AND REVERBED IS SO PRETTY, AND AWESOME!!! MKAY, SO THE THUMBNAIL IS COOL, 8/10, THE FLOWERS ARE PRETTY!! YES, I WILL BE SCREAMING ABOUT THIS SONG LOL 😂 THE PIANO SOUNDS SO PRETTY IN THIS, LIKE IT’S SO MUCH MORE BROUGHT OUT :))), AND THEIR VOICES SOUND SO PRETTY SLOWED!!! OH AND THE CHORUS ITS DIFFERENT OMGGGGG AOPBINAS[FDPOIBJOFIBOAFINBPOJ IT’S SO INSANE OMGGG AOIBAPDOFSKGN!! ANYWAYS RECOMMEND THIS SONG WHEN YOU ARE LIKE “I NEED ABBA VIBES, BUT SLOWED” ALBKNDSPFOBIN
billie eilish - my future - slowed dreamy reverb
by ayabe
so this song is incredible, like it slowed really hits different. billie’s voice has always been so interesting to me because sometimes she sings like very whisper like, and other times she is full on belting like going insane, and i really like that she uses her voice in multiple different ways during her songs. billie is the number one artist i go to when i really wanna be in the feels, and this verison of my future is so amazing. the beat is so interesting, and the thumbnail is really cool 9/10, also i don’t know what the language is nor, do i know what it says, so if you do, let me know lol 😂 but the picture is cool. this song is one i listen to all the time because it’s just- yes. overall recommend this song when your chilling in bed, just in the dark, with the window open on a summer night :)
friends on the other side - s l o w e d
by angelicsounds
THIS IS SO EPIC SLOWED OMGGGGG I CAN’T NOT EVEN EXPLAIN AOBPINADOPBNF I REALLY FEEL LIKE A SPOOKY DUDE WHO KNOWS HOW TO DO SOME SPOOKY STUFF OMGGG i love the original song, and i also really like the cover by annapantsu, definitely recommend her verison too! this has got to be the coolest disney villain song slowed down, hands down. the thumbnail is a GIF of this anime character’s eyes doing weird looking highlight stuff lol idk what to call it, 8/10. overall, recommend when you wanna listen to a song that makes you feel like the main villain in a story :) AND THE ENDING HITS DIFFERENT OMGGGGGGGG
le valse de l’amour - patrick doyle (slowed down)
by mari
okay, so we all know that I love Cinderella. and this song is so incredible, i can’t- okay, but just imagine… the bad batch, undercover at a senate ball, you, trying to make sure the senators are safe. the boys are in their separate locations, you know, watching, making sure everyone is good. some random dude from out of nowhere tries to make you dance with him. you are obviously like “um, what the heck, please no sir.” and suddenly…
“may i have this dance?”
it’s Hunter (or crosshair, but i’ve written a fic about Hunter dancing with the reader, so i feel like he would be a good dancer).
anyways, he whisks you away from random dude, and your like “Hunter there’s no music” because the orchestra just finished their previous song, and he’s like
“just wait.”
bam, this song comes on.
and suddenly, Hunter’s waltzing with you and you didn’t even know he could waltz. and it’s exactly like the scene from Cinderella 2015. So you two are doing your own thing in the middle of the ballroom, and everyone starts moving out of the way because woah these people are really good at dancing
and you are just shocked because HOW??
and he just leads you through the whole thing. he spins you around, and if your wearing a dress and it’s got some tulle on it, it swishes around when he spins you and oh my god the butterflies and smile he gets when you giggle because you love the way it swirls around you. and then people start backing up more, because at this rate, you guys are taking up the whole dance floor.
and you just keep going, and he starts pick you up and spinning you around when the harp comes on. and he grabs you by the waist and starts swinging you around just like Kit & Ella do in the movie. and then the end of the song comes, and he dips you, brings you back up, and that’s it.
and when it’s all said and done, you just look at him, and well, he obviously looks extremely handsome, his suit is all pressed, and his hair is done back in a bun, but he’s got a few wisps coming out from your whole little dancing experience, and all you can say is:
“I-”
“shhh, mesh’la. later. i’ll tell you later.”
anyways, thumbnail is a solid 11/10, and recommend if you wanna daydream about dancing at a senator ball with Hunter.
no i am not planning on writing a fic about this, what you you implying? okay, yes i am, i am. no shame 😂
sleeping beauty - once upon a dream (slowed + reverb)
by Paige Coddington
sleeping beauty is one of my favorite disney princesses besides rapunzel & cinderella, so i love this. The GIF is so pretty, 10/10. Aurora’s voice is pretty, and her vibrato is so much more prominent in this verison, and i am obsessed. this is so pretty, I- speechless, actually. and then philip comes in and it’s just ✨ also, i always like aurora in the pink dress when i was younger, but now i kind of like the blue dress more. they should have just given her a purple dress i guess lol 😂 overall, really pretty, recommend when you are in the mood for some more nostalgic disney vibes :)
D a n c i n g Q u e e n 女王
by v a p o r w a v e
okay so i originally found this on an edit of “the snap from avengers infinity war, but dancing queen” -
and when i tell you that the snap got even sadder, I-
anyways, i also really like vaporwave music, very interesting and very cool. i love the video because i’m pretty sure it’s the original music video, but it looks like your looking through a kaleidoscope, so 100000000/10. this song is so good vaporwave, like, just yes. like when i say this hits different, like for real, this hits different. ABBA is always good, but this by far has to be my favorite thing of ABBA music i have ever found. It’s like…
it’s just incredible.
like i said with the ethereal remix of clair de lune, this is like a song that you put on your life, and just look at all the memories and moments that have happened to you.
overall, recommend when you wanna just sit and think for awhile, or maybe make the snap from avengers infinity war sadder
———
and that’s it! i decided that i would just stick to 10, the other ones i have done are about 12, and i just thought it was a good number lol 😂 i hope you guys enjoy these as much as I do, and check out my pinned post to see them all linked on one post :)
lots of spells (& music listening),
moony

Could you do a Hotch x reader fic where its just a casual day at the bau, reader is trying to work at her office, and Hotch tries to distract her and at the end they just hug together and its fluff asf bc they're cute as hell, love you!!
Just The Two Of Us
Tumblr media
Aaron Hotchner x Reader
Warnings: fem!reader, mentions of kissing
Category: fluff
Word Count: 1k
Author’s Note: omg yes I need more hotch content 😌 love you more!
----
8:30am
Once a month, the BAU tries to take a week without cases so they can get their unimaginable mountains of paperwork done and today happens to be one of those days.
It was still pretty early in the morning, everyone was still figuring out what needs to get done and nursing a big mug of coffee each. Penelope comes in clicking her heels and sets something down on the table.
“I come in peace, and with donuts!”
Spencer was the first one out of his chair, he was looking for his morning sugar rush. Someone had used all the sugar, leaving him with none for his morning cup of sugar and coffee. Everyone headed over to the table while you headed up to Hotch’s office.
You knocked on the door and walked in. “Hey there, sir” you smiled as you shut the door. “Hey sweetie, everything okay?” he asked you. No one knew about your little office romance. The blinds were shut so no one could see in, you made your way over to give him a kiss which ended with you on his lap.
“Garcia bought donuts”
“That was nice of her”
“Mhm hm and I'm sure everyone’s going to be wondering what’s going on in here if we don’t go out there soon”
You stood up brushing out a few wrinkles from your skirt, he grabbed your wrist as you went to walk away. “Can I help you agent Hotchner ?” he smiled as he pulled you back to him, “just one more kiss agent l/n”
You shook your head and kissed his cheek before making your way over to the door. “That’s not what I meant you know” he pouted from his desk making you laugh, “I know, come get a donut. Oh, and wipe the lipstick off your face” you smiled and opened the door.
12:43 pm
Everyone was heading out for lunch, it’s rare that the whole team gets to go out together like normal people and without discussing serial killers. Derek, Penelope and Spencer had taken her car and headed out already. Emily, JJ and Rossi followed in his car, leaving you and Hotch to make your way there.
The only reason the two of you were the last two at the office was because Hotch was in a meeting and you were on a roll and just about to finish this report. He walked into the bullpen to see you at the desk “y/n? I thought you left with everyone else” he came over and gave you a hug from behind. “I was just finishing up, plus I was waiting on you” you turned around and wrapped your arms around him.
“Do we have to go ?”
“Yes? I'm hungry Aaron”
“So am I, but not for that” he kissed down the side of your neck, pushing you back towards your desk. You hopped up onto the desk, Aaron standing between your legs. “my office or maybe we have time to run home?” he checked his watch, you rested your hand on top of his.
“Now is not the time to be horny, Hotchner. I'm going to be really grumpy if I don’t get anything to eat”
“Alright, let’s go” he sighed in defeat.
“Oh hush, I'll make it up to you later”
You pushed him back slightly, making space for you to stand when you got off the desk. He follow behind you as you walked onto the elevators. The moment the elevator started moving, he pressed the emergency stop.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing”
Needless to say, you guys spent the next 10 minutes making out in the elevator until Penelope called, asking where you were.
5:50 pm
Today was one of the rare days where everyone was done before 7 and could all head home to their families. Penelope came in and was waiting for Derek to finish up his last report. She made her rounds, gathering everyone in the bullpen
“After all the hard work you guys put in today, I think you deserve a reward” Penelope smiled at all of you.
“Baby girl, as much as we love your surprises, everyone just wants to go home” Derek told her as he leaned back in his chair
She rolled her eyes at him and pulled her speaker out of her bag. “Dance party!” she clicked the button, turning the speakers on. For something so small, it was incredibly loud. She pulled Derek up to dance with her, which of course he did
Emily and JJ were next, you joined them too. All of you were dancing around the office, even Spence was dancing with you guys. Hotch and Rossi came out of their offices when they heard laughing and music.
“Come dance you two!” Penelope called for them, Rossi laughed and came down but took a seat at Emily’s desk rather than dance. Hotch was still by the railing watching you guys dance.
A slow song came on next, “Oh, oops” Penelope went to change it. “No, leave it. I like this one” Spencer told her as he stuck his hand out to Emily for her to dance with him, which she accepted. Rossi got up to dance with JJ, as Derek wrapped his arms around Penelope.
You sat back at your desk when Aaron came down and stuck his hand out,
“Care to dance agent ?”
“I’d love to”
You smiled as you put your hand in his. The two of you swayed to the beat, Aaron spinning you every so often. Your head rested on his shoulder as you moved slowly, this was the closest you guys had ever been in front of the team.
You hadn’t noticed the song was over, nor did you notice when everyone quietly picked up their stuff and headed out.
“Honey, they’re gone” Aaron whispered to you
“Mhm hm” you didn’t want to move, you’d stay in his arms forever if you could.
“It’s time to go home baby” you lifted your head off his shoulders to see that the bullpen was empty.
It was just the two of you swaying along to nothing.

Ranking Lady Gaga's albums, from worst to best
Tumblr media
Being a Lady Gaga fan can be an exercise in frustration.
Gaga is far more ambitious than most popstars — I doubt we’ll ever see Ariana Grande or Ed Sheeran make an album as left-field as Born This Way or ARTPOP. But she's also far less consistent, with numerous misbegotten projects.
Gaga's undeniably successful, with five #1 hits, an Oscar and multiple iconic music videos to her name. But her messy album rollouts and tradition of underperforming lead singles make her feel like an underdog compared to the more polished, precise careers of her contemporaries like Taylor Swift, Beyoncé or Bruno Mars.
Gaga is kind of a mess. But she's our mess. This album ranking will cover some records I can't stand — albums that make me constantly hit the fast-forward button, or albums I ignore altogether. But there isn't a single record on here that wasn't a bold move. Even the "back to basics" albums made strong aesthetic choices.
So let's dive into the career of the most fascinating Millennial popstar.
Tumblr media
#8: Cheek To Cheek (2014)
This really shouldn't count. It's a Lady Gaga album in name only. But, technically it's a Gaga album, so here we are.
I've got nothing against Gaga having fun playing Rat Pack-era dress-up with Tony Bennett. She's a theatre kid at heart, and I'm sure every theatre kid would kill to make a Great American Songbook covers record like this. It sounds like she and Tony enjoyed themselves, so I'm happy for them!
...but I'm sorry. I can't be objective about Cheek To Cheek, it's the opposite of my taste. There's only so many bland lounge ballads I can take.
BEST SONGS: I have to pick one? "Anything Goes" is cute, I guess.
WORST SONG: "Sophisticated Lady"
Tumblr media
#7: A Star Is Born (2018)
Let me first make this clear — A Star Is Born, the movie starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga? It's a masterpiece. It's electrifying and tragic and I'm still upset it didn't sweep the Oscars that year. There's even a cute dog! You won't hear me say a bad word about it.
But A Star Is Born, the accompanying soundtrack? It's extremely hit-and-miss.
Yes, it includes arguably Gaga's best-ever song and one of the greatest movie hits ever written, "Shallow." And there's plenty of other great tunes in the tracklist too — "Always Remember Us This Way," "I'll Never Love Again," the "La Vie En Rose" cover.
Even the country-rock songs from Bradley Cooper (who, reminder, is not a professional singer) are mostly good! "Black Eyes" RIPS, and "Maybe It's Time" feels like a long-lost classic.
But sadly, there are so many mediocre filler tracks on this thing. The second half of A Star Is Born's hour-plus runtime (Gaga's longest!) is padded with generic songs like "Look What I've Found," "Heal Me" and "I Don't Know What Love Is." The only good one out of the bunch is the silly, intentionally-bad "Why Did You Do That?"
In the movie, these filler tracks serve a point – they're meant to show Gaga's character selling out. They work in the movie when you hear them for a few seconds and see Cooper make a drunkly disappointed scowl. But I don't want to listen to them, and sadly, they make up half the album.
In other words — A Star Is Born would've made an incredible six or seven-song EP. But as an 63-minute-long record? It's a slog.
BEST SONGS: "Shallow", "Always Remember Us This Way," "Maybe It's Time"
WORST SONG: "Heal Me"
Tumblr media
#6: Joanne (2016)
After Born This Way and ARTPOP, I get why Gaga needed to make a more lowkey, back-to-basics album. I also understand that many of these songs have extremely personal lyrics for her.
But is a down-to-earth album what I really want from our most outré popstar? Not really.
Luckily, Joanne is better than that description suggests. Yes, there are some bland acoustic ballads and awkward hippie-era throwbacks (two styles that are really not in Gaga's wheelhouse), but there's also some Springsteen-style heartland rockers! And those go hard in the paint.
Joanne works best when Gaga works the record's dusty aesthetics into her brand of weirdo pop, like on the sizzling "John Wayne," the winking "A-YO" or the delightfully extra Florence Welch duet "Hey Girl."
The record also has "Perfect Illusion" — a glorious red herring of a lead single that sounds nothing like anything else on Joanne. It's a roided-up mixture of woozy Tame Impala production and hair metal histrionics, and it rules. It might be Gaga's best-ever lead single! (at the very least, it's her most underrated.)
And there is one slow tune that's unambiguously great: "Million Reasons," another solid Gaga lighters-in-the-air power ballad pastiche.
Despite what some Little Monsters may tell you, Joanne isn't a disaster. There's some great stuff in there, and even the worst songs are just forgettable. But it's still far from her best.
BEST SONGS: "Perfect Illusion," "Diamond Heart," "Million Reasons"
WORST SONG: "Come To Mama"
Tumblr media
#5: Chromatica (2020)
When Chromatica was released near the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, it had been seven years since Gaga had released music in her classic gonzo-synthpop vein. I can easily picture the record serving as an "ugh fine, I'll give you what you want" response to the many Little Monsters annoyed with Gaga's half-decade of folksy ballads and Julie Andrews cosplay.
I'll say this about Chromatica — outside of The Fame Monster, it's her most consistent record. There's not a single track that's a glaring mistake. And the three singles — "Stupid Love," "911" and the triumphant Ariana Grande duet "Rain On Me" — easily stand among her best tracks.
But although "all bangers, no ballads" album sounds rad in theory, it doesn't really succeed in practice. Chromatica is solid, but it's also a very same-y record. It feels like Gaga had one really great idea for the album ('90s club music with super-depressing lyrics) and repeated it over and over and over again to diminishing results.
There are some songs that are able to separate themselves: the three singles, of course, as well as the goofy "Babylon" and "Sine From Above," the Elton John duet that's the closest Chromatica gets to a ballad. But by the end of the album, you feel more worn out than electrified.
Also — and this is probably unfair, but still — Chromatica came out just a couple months after another retro-dance blockbuster pop album: Dua Lipa's magnum opus, Future Nostalgia. That's not a flattering comparison.
BEST SONGS: "Rain On Me," "Stupid Love," "911"
WORST SONG: "1000 Doves"
Tumblr media
#4: The Fame (2008)
Out of all of Gaga's records, The Fame is most like a time capsule. It REEKS of late '00s/early '10s pop — which isn't an entirely fair criticism, seeing as Gaga popularized that era's sleazy, synthy aesthetic. It's also not a bad thing! I don't mind a little nostalgia!
As you already know, The Fame's singles are masterworks. "Just Dance," "Poker Face," "Paparazzi" — these tracks have titanic legacies for good reason. And although it's probably the least-beloved of this album's hits, despite being a total banger, "LoveGame" should still be commended for having arguably the most Gaga lyric ever (you know, the "disco stick" line).
And even though those tracks are front-loaded on The Fame, there are some gems deeper in the tracklist. "Summerboy" is basically Gwen Stefani covering The Strokes (so obviously, it's great). "Eh, Eh" is adorable. "Starstruck" is the most 2008 song ever recorded, with aggressive Auto-Tune and Flo Rida showing up to make Starbucks jokes.
Sadly, The Fame still feels like Gaga before she became fully-formed at certain points. The back half has a number of songs that feel like generic club tracks forced by the label, and "Paper Gangsta" is one of the clunkiest songs in Gaga's catalogue.
But at the very least, the bad songs on The Fame at least serve as little nostalgia bombs for that era of pop. And the best songs are untouchable classics.
BEST SONGS: "Paparazzi," "Just Dance," "Summerboy"
WORST SONG: "Paper Gangsta"
Tumblr media
#3: ARTPOP (2013)
For much of Gaga's career, she's been ahead of the curve. She tries something, and a year or a few years later, other popstars try something similar to diminishing results.
That doesn't just apply to the successful stuff, like Gaga's extravagant music videos inspiring many copycats from 2010-2013. It also applies to the mid-late '10s trend of legacy popstars making a controversial record with risky aesthetic or lyrical choices that backfired: reputation. Witness. Man of The Woods.
Gaga did this first, with ARTPOP — arguably the most abrasive, and bizzare major label album released by a major modern popstar. And she did it better, because unlike Swift, Perry and Timberlake, Gaga's weirdness was for real. And it was in service of some prime, hyper-aggressive bangers.
ARTPOP isn't Gaga's best work — some of her experiments on it are major misfires, from the obnoxious "Mary Jane Holland" to the bland Born This Way leftover (and Romani slur-utilizing) "Gypsy."
But when ARTPOP is on, it's ON. The opening stretch in particular, from "Aura" to "Venus" to "G.U.Y." to "Sexxx Dreams," is chaotic synthpop at its finest. Those songs took Gaga's classic sound to an apocalyptic, demented extreme, and they're fantastic.
"MANiCURE" is a great glam-rock banger, "Dope" is another classic Gaga piano ballad, the title track is some sikly-smooth dreampop; even the misguided, clunky trap anthem "Jewels N' Drugs" is bad in a hilarious, charming way!
Trust me: ARTPOP will go down in history not as a flop, but as a gutsy, underrated record from a legend. Less Witness, more In Utero.
BEST SONGS: "G.U.Y.," "Venus," "Sexxx Dreams"
WORST SONG: "Gypsy"

#2: The Fame Monster (2009)
Objectively speaking, this is probably the best Gaga album.
It's her one record with no fluff, no filler — only 34 minutes and 8 tracks, all of them stellar.
It's the record that took Gaga from "wow, this new woman is a fresh new face in pop!" to "this woman IS pop."
It's the record with her signature track, "Bad Romance," which was accompanied by arguably the greatest music video of the 21st Century. (It also has my absolute favorite Gaga track, the relentlessly catchy "Telephone.")
I don't think I need to explain what makes mega-smashes "Bad Romance" and "Telephone" and "Alejandro" great, nor the accompanying legendary deep cuts "Speechless" and "Dance In The Dark." They speak for themselves.
However — the sleek, calculated perfection of The Fame Monster, while incredible, isn't something I return to often. It's just not the side of Gaga that's my favorite. That honor would have to go to...
BEST SONGS: "Telephone," "Dance In The Dark," "Bad Romance"
WORST SONG: "So Happy I Could Die" (but it's still pretty solid)

#1: Born This Way (2011)
One of my favorite podcasts is Blank Check. The concept of the show is to analyze each movie by a famous director — in particular, those who had big success early on and then got a blank check to make whatever crazy passion project they wanted. Here's a great example: because Batman was a massive hit, Tim Burton got to make whatever Hot Topic-core movies he wanted to for decades, from Edward Scissorhands to a creepy Willy Wonka remake.
That long-winded tangent is just to say: Born This Way was Lady Gaga's blank check. By early 2011, she had conquered the pop universe, notching hit after hit after hit. Every other pop star was copying her quirky music videos. So the label let Gaga do whatever she wanted — and she didn't waste that opportunity.
Born This Way is wildly overproduced. It's both extremely trend-chasing (those synths were cutting edge at the time but charmingly dated now), but also deeply uncaring about what the teens want (I don't think Springsteen and Queen homages were big at the time). And I love every messy, overblown second of it.
From the hair-metal/synthpop hybrid opener "Marry The Night" to the majestic '80s power ballad "The Edge of Glory," Born This Way starts at an 11. And Gaga never takes her foot off the pedal for the album's entire hour-plus run time. Clanging electric guitars, thunderous synths and Clarence Clemons (!!!) sax solos collide into each other as Gaga champions every misfit and loser in the world. It's gloriously corny in the best way possible.
Born This Way is also the perfect middle ground of pop-savvy Gaga and gonzo Gaga. It doesn't go quite as hard as ARTPOP, but the hooks are stronger. And the oddball moments are tons of fun, from the sci-fi biker anthem "Highway Unicorn" to the goofy presidential-sex banger "Government Hooker" ("Put your hands on me/John F. Kennedy" might be the greatest line in pop history).
Born This Way will always be my favorite Gaga album. It's armed with nuclear-grade hooks, slamming beats, and soaring anthems. Although it's not as untouchably pristine as the Mt. Rushmore of '10s pop classics (for the record, that's 1989, EMOTION, Lemonade and, of course, Melodrama), Gaga isn't best served by meticulousness. She's proudly tacky and histrionic, and so that's what makes Born This Way an utter joy.
BEST SONGS: "The Edge of Glory," "You and I," "Marry The Night"
WORST SONG: "Bloody Mary"

summary: Catalina starts college in a small town all the way across the country. She doesn’t know anyone and isn’t exactly looking for friends. She just wants to focus on dance. But when she meets fellow dance major, Jimin, and adventurous, fellow freshman, Jungkook, Catalina ends up discovering a whole new side to the small college town; one that is dangerous but oh so enticing...
Catalina took one last glance around her room before heading downstairs. She heard Jimin’s voice, which put a wide smile on her face. Him and Taehyung were back on time, which meant they’d be able to come with everyone that afternoon.
She ran down the stairs, taking them two at a time, before landing in the foyer. Taehyung and Jimin were taking their shoes off and setting their bags down, chatting with Hoseok and Namjoon. Catalina threw her arms around Jimin and asked him, “How was your trip?”
He pulled away and smiled wide, his eyes disappearing. “It was incredible. I’ll tell you all about it later.”
“I can’t wait,” Catalina said, smiling just as wide.
“We were gonna go to the beach later,” said Hoseok. “Do you want to go with us?”
“Sure! I think we’ll mostly just relax, though,” said Taehyung.
“Here, I’ll help you unpack so you can get yourselves settled before we go,” Hoseok said, following them back out the car. Catalina left the foyer and went into the kitchen. The kitchen was beautiful, so different from when she first came into this house. They had it remodeled, actually, they had a lot of the house remodeled. Everything was a bit more modern, but their antiques were mostly still around. Even Yoongi redid his bedroom, saying he didn’t want to sleep in a rat’s nest anymore. He made an incredible amount of money on the antiques in that room, the museums practically begging him to part with them.
The light was on in the kitchen when Catalina entered, which meant Jungkook was in there. Sure enough, he was standing in front of the fridge, staring into its contents with bleary eyes. His hair was a floof on top of his head and his pajamas were rumpled. Catalina came up behind him and wrapped her arms around him. She laid her head on his back and listened to the steady rhythm of his heart, something she’s become so very familiar with.
“What will you have for breakfast?” she asked. He grunted in response, shifting some containers around on the shelf. He finally chose a container of leftovers and cracked the lid to sniff it. He sniffed it three times before deciding it was edible and dumping it on a plate. While it was heating up, he turned and opened his arms, letting Catalina settle into him.
“Are you gonna surf today?” he asked.
“You asked me that yesterday,” Catalina said with a giggle.
“And you said no yesterday!” he said. She could feel his laughter in his chest where her head was resting.
“Maybe,” she said. “I heard the teaching process is very hands on.”
He chuckled and said, “Where did you hear that?”
“Hm, I don’t remember,” she said. The microwave beeped and Jungkook let Catalina go so he could grab his food. She pulled a blood bag out of the fridge and sat down with him at the dining table, sipping at her drink while he ate.
“What are you guys doing up so early?”
Yoongi wandered into the kitchen with messy hair and tired eyes.
“It’s beach day!” Jungkook said, much more awake now that he was eating. “You’re coming, right?”
               “No.”
“Yoongi, you don’t have to swim or surf or anything,” said Catalina. “You can just sleep on the beach. Or drink wine on the beach. You need the fresh air, you’ve been at your piano for days. Plus, I think everyone would really like to spend some time with you.”
“When are you going?” he asked.
“We’re heading out around eleven,” said Catalina.
“Oh. I’ll think about it,” Yoongi said. “Are Taehyung and Jimin back yet?”
“Yes, they just walked in a little while ago,” said Catalina.
“Good,” he said. “I’m glad their flight wasn’t delayed.”
With that, he left the room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
               During the drive to the beach, Catalina made sure to sit in the back of the Jeep with Jimin.
               “So, tell me about the trip,” she said, a giddy smile on her face.
               “Ah, it was perfect!” said Jimin. “I’ve never been to Arizona before so I didn’t really know what to expect about the weather or anything. It really is very dry there. The heat is like heat from an oven. And the places we saw were so beautiful. We camped in the Grand Canyon and… it was insane. The Grand Canyon is insane. Everything was so incredible. And at night, you could see the stars perfectly. When we camped in Death Valley, there was absolutely no light pollution for miles so the sky was amazing. We saw the Milky Way.”
               “Oh wow,” Catalina sighed.
               “You and Jungkook should go next summer,” said Jimin. “You’d love it.”
               “Yeah, I would do that,” said Catalina. “That sounds like a lot of fun. We need to make up for our last trip.”
               They sat in silence for a while before Jimin said, “I can’t believe we’re going to France in two weeks.”
               “I know!” said Catalina. “I can’t believe it! This is something I’ve been waiting for my entire life and I’ll finally be able to do it!”
               “Is your solo ready?” Jimin asked.
               “I mean, as ready as it’ll ever be,” said Catalina. “You know how it is.”
Her and Jimin had both taken the winter semester off to recover from their transformations and to get used to their new bodies. Catalina used that time to choreograph a solo worthy of an audition in France. By now, the beginning of summer, she had perfected it as much as she could.
“I’m going to the studio to practice it tomorrow,” said Catalina. “You should come with me. You can help, or just watch. You haven’t seen it finished yet.”
“What time? I’m babysitting tomorrow,” said Jimin.
“Oh right! You’re doing that every Tuesday now, aren’t you?” said Catalina.
Jimin nodded and said, “Yep, Caleb’s sister has dance on Tuesdays, so I’ll just be there for a few hours.”
“Are you still gonna do that when classes start? You’re signing up for classes in the fall, right?” she asked.
“Yeah, I don’t want to fall behind any more than I am,” said Jimin.
“Me too,” said Catalina. Then she smiled and grabbed Hoseok’s shoulder over the driver’s seat. “And you’re starting classes with us too, aren’t you?”
He laughed and said, “I sure am!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The weather was perfect, and according to Jungkook, the water was ideal for beginner’s surfing. They got set up on a relatively empty patch of the beach. The family closest to them had a few kids, who were building a sandcastle near the water. It was Monday, so thankfully there weren’t too many other people there. Yoongi laid out a beach blanket and immediately laid down, covering his face with his sun hat. He was almost completely covered, with long sleeves and long pants. Catalina figured he was trying to protect his pasty white skin.
Jimmy K settled down beside Yoongi with a thick book. Catalina had assumed he would be surfing with them that day; he seemed like the type to surf. Jimin and Taehyung lathered themselves in sunscreen and took their spots near the cooler, relaxing and watching the fun just like they promised. After shedding her shorts and tank top to reveal her new white bikini, Catalina lathered herself in sunscreen, since she could already feel herself burning. Then she grabbed her board and met the others down by the water.
At some point, the family next to them left and they were left to themselves on their private stretch of beach.
Catalina, Namjoon, and Hoseok kept their eyes on Jungkook and Jin, who were teaching them the basics of how to surf. They all had boards, rented ones for the newbies, and Catalina was excited to get out on the water. With every glance at the ocean behind her, she felt nervousness twist in her stomach. She had to keep reminding herself that she wouldn’t drown and she wouldn’t get hurt. Her body was stronger than it used to be, which was something she still hadn’t completely gotten used to.
They were standing on their boards, Jin showing them how to position their feet. Jungkook went to each of them, giving them pointers or fixing their positions. He stepped onto Catalina’s board behind her and nudged her right foot forward a bit, hands on her bare waist.
“Just keep your knees bent and your legs spread a bit more,” he said. His bare chest was pressed up against her back.
“…And if you guys fall off, just let the current roll you until it’s settled, then come up,” Jin was saying. “But you guys won’t drown anyway, so no harm.”
“Right, no harm,” Jungkook said, his hand sliding down to her butt.
She giggled and turned around to face him.
“Did Hoseok get this treatment when you helped him?” she asked with a wide smile on her face.
“He would probably like that,” Jungkook said with a laugh. “But this is only reserved for my favorite students.”
“Ooh, so Namjoon got this too,” Catalina said, winding her arms over his bare shoulders. He threw his head back and laughed. This was her favorite song. The sounds of his laughter, the waves hitting the beach, The seagulls calling overhead, his heart beating in his chest.
Catalina leaned up to press her lips against his, the board wobbling in the sand beneath their feet.
She never wanted this song to end.

that holst post from earlier awakened the slumbering basic orchestra bitch in me and now i’m wild about classical music again all of a sudden for one (1) night only, i’m going through my old classical playlist and here are some unsolicited opinions?? recommendations?? top 10 piece rankings?? from yours truly, most of which i have played personally
10. rossini, barber of seville overture - SPEAKING OF BASIC let’s get this one out of the way, literally everyone in the universe knows this piece but it’s just so goddamn catchy and also fun to play?? sometimes it just gets stuck in my head at random times for no reason but i do not care it is welcome to live rent-free in my brain always
9. bizet, intermission from l’arlesienne suite no. 2 - ok this one is a slower piece and i never see anyone talk about it ever but imo?? highly underrated with a gorgeous, well-developed melody from beginning to end not to mention an INCREDIBLY satisfying build-up & payoff and ok maybe the ending is a little dragged out but that climax makes me cry real human tears pls give it a chance?? it kind of reminds me of a soliloquy in a musical where the main character like. breaks down and spills their entire heart out at the audience and it’s so dramatique™ and good
8. von suppé, poet and peasant overture - the violin part in this is SUPER fun but that’s not important compared to the fact that that cello solo is the reason i lowkey have a crush on every single cellist tbh,
7. dvořák, largo from the new world symphony - this is probably the most Basic Opinion on this list but idc i love this melody to death, even all the dumb corny choir boy editions of it, a+, top 10 songs to die to if i’m gonna b real
6. bruch, finale from violin concerto no. 1 - i just ADORE how the violin solo in this piece manages to balance being playful and light with being colorful and interesting, it def makes me wish i was good enough to be a soloist LMAO?? also this lush middle section (which kind of reminds me of the tchaik romeo & juliet a little bit??) makes me want to die, it’s so beautiful
5. dvořák AGAIN, slavonic dances op. 46 - everybody loves the brahms hungarian dances yes but my favorite “collection of folksy fun orchestra tunes” is DEFINITELY the slavonic dances, really all of them but ESPECIALLY no. 7 bc it starts off sounding like it should be accompanied with an animated montage of a dopey little cartoon knight or something plodding along, fantasia style, but then it swells into this GORGEOUS sweeping middle section for just a few bars then back to cute cartoon nonsense for the rest of the piece?? i don’t think i actually ever played no. 7 myself now that i think about it but i love it anyway. also no. 8 bc i love how FUCKING dramatic it is
4. rimsky-korsakov, capriccio espagnol - i got to play this for a summer camp once and again recently with my company orchestra, it’s so fun?? it’s so light and festive with great solos and great melodies and with all its short sections it’s both SO listenable but also v cohesive, i’m a huge fan
3. márquez, danzón no 2 - i think this is a pretty modern piece actually but i’ve also played this multiple times at this point and love it a lot, it has a lot of really great solo bits (like this sexy little trumpet solo) and it just makes me want to dance, i love watching dudamel conduct this bc he looks exactly the way i feel the entire time
2. shostakovich, allegro non troppo from symphony no. 5 - listen i know for sure this has some deep symbolic or ironic political meaning about something something living under an oppressive, propaganda-and-censorship-controlled state or whatever but it just. fucking rules. my favorite part is that eerie little part with the high violins near the middle which i’m SURE i fucked up when i played it back when i was a wee high schooler just kiddding it’s actually this OTHER part with the soaring violins but anyway. my favorite performance is the bernstein one bc it’s the only one i can find that’s as fast or aggressive as i remember it being
1. beethoven, egmont overture - i’ve always thought that if you threw a slow punchy drum loop over the beginning of this you’d get some epic trailer bgm tbh?? idk maybe a controversial opinion but this is my favorite beethoven symphonic work bc the entire piece is a BANGER that’s not only fun as hell but also incredibly listenable all the way through, and also the ending fucking slaps!! anyway not to be lowkey sacrilegious but here’s a space jam remix of the ending part which i love but my fellow orchestra members did not appreciate so now i am sharing it all with you all instead,
honorable mentions:
holst, jupiter from the planets - this honestly deserves to be on the list, i just didn’t want to talk about it AGAIN bc i already started ranting in the tags a little bit but really this is self-explanatory, the i vow to thee section is one of the most beautiful pieces of music i’ve ever had the pleasure of playing or listening to and that’s THAT
saint-saëns, bacchanale from samson and delilah - danse macabre is also fun and carnival of the animals is ok but bacchanale is the saint-saëns piece that makes me go absolutely feral. it may be a go-to “we need something to spice up this concert program to make it not sound just Totally old and bland and white” but man. what an absolute party of a piece to play
mussorgsky, the great gate of kiev from pictures at an exhibition - i really love grandiose, epic pieces like this but this one in particular holds a special place in my heart bc (i think) this was the finale for my last high school orchestra concert which, while not the most rigorous group, was definitely the one with the fondest memories for me 😭i’m not gonna link it but i found a youtube clip of that performance and man. i miss.....this part through the end brings goosebumps to my skin and a tear to my eye aaaAAAA IT’S SO GOOD

𝐈 𝐖𝐈𝐋𝐋 𝐁𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐑𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐃𝐘
WHO: finn and dan schuester, ft. the twins. WHEN: saturday morning, 4/10. WHERE: nia and dan’s home. WHAT: finn spends some time with her brother and his two new babies.
it’s not every day that a person becomes an aunt or an uncle, and for finn schuester, who valued her family above all else, she made it a mission to get out of chicago and back to lima ASAP to meet her nephews.
the entire train ride, she felt kinda foolish, knowing in just two short weeks she’d be on her way back home again for the lima equivalent of a royal wedding. the moment she got into the car with her dad who talked her ear off the entire drive to dan’s, it felt worth it. finn loved being away for school. loved. in chiacgo, she was free from all the responsibilities and image she liked to uphold in lima. finn felt like a normal, twenty year old who went out with friends, had fun, and generally enjoyed the college experience. but she was bursting at the brim to meet the newest schuesters.
finn had chosen to stay with dan and nia rather than with her parents, which had just as many cons as it did pros. pro: no mom and dad to fuss over potential significant others, grades, and activities. finn could only entertain the questions for so long. con: waking up at 5 am saturday morning to her nephews shrieking as if they were trying to break the sound barrier.
thrusting herself out of bed, finn, incredibly characteristically, rushed to help out. pausing only to loop her hair into a bun, she made quick timing into the nursery only to find dan standing there outnumbered two to one. “need some help?” she asked, yawning from the doorway to which dan eagerly gestured to gus, still screaming in his crib, then explained, “please, it’d be great if nia actually got to sleep in this morning.”
“yeah, no problem.”
Tumblr media
finn shuffled over to the crib, scooping her nephew out and into her arms. her eyes were fixed on dan, watching him carefully and mimicking how he was holding justice. though their stares were hazy from sleep, once the twins quieted down, it was a tender moment in the gray of morning shared between siblings.
like any younger sibling, she obviously looked up to her older brother. . . her much older brother in this case had always managed to set an excellent example. at times he could be blunt, and cold, but finn never failed to understand it was from a place of love and care. still near gawking at her brother, he shook his head curiously and asked, “what?” finn shrugged as much as she could with an infant in her grasp, then answered, “i just can’t believe you’re a dad, that’s...so much.” she said vaguely, now gazing down at her nephew. a wry laugh softly sounded from beside her as dan agreed with her, “yeah, it is.”
again, silence fell. dan and finn didn’t have a bad relationship in any way, shape, or form, but with finn’s brain tricking her into smelling fresh coffee downstairs, and dan having spent countless nights for the past two weeks in this way, it was understandable why small talk didn’t come easy.
dan crossed the room and situated himself in a recliner with justice before taking his turn to initiate the conversation, “how’s school?”
“still good.”
“good.”
“yep.”
yawning, finn figured that the stale conversation with her brother could only last so long, and the  few minutes of quiet from gus were more than enough so that she could set him back into his crib. then, she’d head to the guest bedroom to try and get a little more shut eye.
oh how wrong she was.
the moment finn leaned over to place the dozing infant down, another piercing shriek sounded throughout the nursery, which in turn, caused justice to begin wail. panicked, finn tenderly brought one of the twins back close to her chest to try and soothe him, but as dan also found little success in quelling justice, the twins were feeding off of each other’s cries, leaving the two adults gridlocked.
in a delirious exhaustion and out of desire for his wife to get some rest, dan pulled a will schuester trick out of his pocket and softly began to sing adele’s remedy to justice. finn, surprisingly, was a little slow to catch on, and critically looked at her brother. not to be a downer or anything, but she was about ninety-nine percent sure singing to babies was something reserved for scenes on screens but as dan crackled and croaked out the opening lyrics to the song, justice still cried, but just not quite as loud.
I remember all of the things that I thought I wanted to be So desperate to find a way out of my world and finally breathe Right before my eyes I saw, my heart it came to life This ain't easy, it's not meant to be Every story has its scars
finn was pulled from the trance of watching her brother by the loudest scream she’d heard from a child ever. looking at gus, all red faced and fussy, she was for once, rendered clueless. mouth slightly open, and pleading stare in dan’s direction to help her as he sang through the chorus. soon enough though, dan did what he always did: tell her what to do, the new father gestured for finn to try her hand at singing to gus.
if she wasn’t tired and desperate, maybe she would’ve given the approach a second thought, but instead she quietly and flatly began her own verse of a lullaby to gus.
No river is too wide or too deep for me to swim to you Come whatever, I'll be the shelter that won't let the rain come through Your love, it is my truth And I will always love you Love you
the full blown crying had subsided, but each of the boys continued to fuss at a quieter volume. dan wordlessly encouraged finn to continue the soft singing as he joined her for the chorus.
When the pain cuts you deep When the night keeps you from sleeping Just look and you will see That I will be your remedy When the world seems so cruel And your heart makes you feel like a fool I promise you will see That I will be, I will be your remedy
a repeated chorus later, dan’s fatherly instinct proved to be correct, as both of the twins slumbered soundly, and didn’t make a single sound as they were placed into their respective cribs.
they’d done it! they’d successfully navigated a morning meltdown!
enthused, finn held her hand up excitedly for a high-five as she silently danced in place. maybe her aunt-skills weren’t half bad. almost immediately, dan clapped his hand into finn’s for the hig-five she would offer. at the smacking, instantly, justice woke back up with another ferocious screech.
defeat.
THE END.

Album Discussion- The Fall of Troy
Last week I discussed an album that, more or less, was defined by looseness and empty spaces. This might as well be the polar opposite of that.
Tumblr media
(man no-one seems to have uploaded this album art in high res)
Released in 2003, The Fall of Troy is a self-titled mathcore/post-hardcore/screamo debut album made by 3 17 year olds- and in some ways that shows, but it’s not like they were fresh, they’d had two EPs under a different name by that point. The Fall of Troy is probably best known by their song F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X., having been featured as a bonus track in Guitar Hero III, which is notably, not on this album. Rather, their second album, Doppelganger, had a few tracks that were basically retakes of songs from this first album. But we’re not talking about Doppelganger (and I still can’t find a bloody CD of it), we’re talking about The Fall of Troy, by The Fall of Troy, so let’s bloody well dive in.
The first song on here, Rockstar Nailbomb!, is as much a statement of intent as anything I’ve ever seen. It’s starts with hoarsely screamed, incomprehensible vocals over a frenetic set of guitar riffs, that cuts back into a more traditional song structure, you know, after a bit. Like any good opener, it’s introducing what you’re going to be getting from the album- songs that, while extremely energetic, tend to cut between sung vocals and screamed ones at a moment’s notice, complex and overlapping guitar riffs, and a very deliberately unpolished sound. The technical skill on display is incredible considering the age of the band, as well. For such a short song, Rockstar Nailbomb! goes in some real places, closing with a line that would be appropriate to finish off the album as a whole- but of course, we’re just getting started.
The next song is called Spartacus, and it shows off the talent of the drummer in a way that the previous didn’t. Unfortunately, I almost feel like this song was kind of a half-formed idea, considering it’s a minute and a quarter long, and the…squeal…? Near the end is kind of offputting. A mid one.
Oh boy it wouldn’t be a nerd band without ridiculous track names- next up is The Circus That Has Brought Us Back to These Nights (Yo Chocola), and no I don’t fucking know what that means. This one ironically feels the most like a song than the others before it, a slightly more traditional structure, the screaming and singing vocals forming something of a call-and-response that would probably make more sense if I could understand the lyrics half the time. Despite this, it’s no less speedy, frantic, and intricate, mixes between melody and dissonance that are basically the band’s signature.
The fourth track is named Mouths Like Sidewinder Missiles, and it’s one of my favourite tracks on the album. I can’t really describe why, though, so I’m going to take a minute to talk about something else. See, this is one of the tracks that was redone for Doppelganger, and on Spotify, for whatever reason, has the title misspelled “Misssiles”. I let them know about this years ago and they never fixed it, so I guess this is my callout post. For what it’s worth, I think the Doppelganger version is a bit looser, adding in some elements in the empty space (there’s a reverb after the initial riff I really love), but both have their own merits.
Okay, mild rant over, back to regular old rambling. The next track is The Last March of the Ents, Lord of the Rings reference very much intended. This is one of those tracks I always forgets exists to be honest, like the intro started and I was like…what was this one again? And then the bit at like 50 seconds came in and I remembered everything. That section is honestly really strong, though unfortunately the rest of the track kinda feels just like Mouths like Sidewinder Missiles, but like, slightly worse? Which is especially awkward considering it immediately proceeds that song. I will say the part of the song where it slows alllll the way down is really enjoyable, it’s very gradual and smooth, gives the bass a bit of time to shine, before blowing back up again because these guys just can’t bear to play slow for half a minute.
The next track is F.C.P.S.I.T.S.G.E.P.G.E.P.G.E.P. This is the song that their most popular track, F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X. is a version of, and they’ve never actually stated what the acronym is for. A common (and I believe discredited) suggestion is, and I quote, “Fuck condoms, premarital sex is the shit, get ‘er pregnant get ‘er pregnant get ‘er pregnant”, which is A Take. It also has nothing to do with the lyrics of the song itself. This track is actually by far the loosest and slowest on the album completely, appropriate considering it’s first words are “slow down”. There’s really not a lot of screaming on it, left only to the chorus, and they’re actually understandable which is nice (or maybe it’s just because I know it’s “come running home”). This is undoubtedly an emo track, based on the lyrics, but it’s also just kind of excellent, similarly complex lyrics slowed down to a comprehensible tempo and a bridge that builds in a supremely satisfying manner. The comparison to R.E.M.I.X. is of course, inevitable, and I will say the tightening up did help in some places- the very slow section at the latter part of the song probably doesn’t need to go that long, and that’s easily the part that gets sped up most in the redo. Still, the song stands out very naturally, feeling more thoughtful and controlled than its peers.
The next song is titled “Whacko Jacko Steals The Elephant Man’s Bones”, apparently a reference to…a music video where Michael Jackson danced next to a recreation of the skeleton of a famously deformed man. Yeah, ok, sure. I don’t actually have much to say about this one, it’s very scream-led, but doesn’t really stand out to me apart from the naming. It’s play rating supports this, being the second least listened track here, but it’s by no means bad. It’s just kinda long and as generic as something like this can be, I suppose. Honestly I kinda forgot all the directions this goes, some of these sections are really quite excellent, but the song is probably like 2 minutes longer than it needed to be. I’m just saying. Like I kept waiting for this song to try and change my mind and it kinda just didn’t.
Reassurance Rests in the Sea is up next, and god that little riff it’s building around, that just noodles around but at triple speed, is just so sick. It’s a song that spends a lot more time cutting itself down- like F.C.P.etc. it’s looser and slower, but substantially more disjointed than that one is. This song, uh, completely breaks off like two minutes in and just stops. And becomes a different song. Like, I don’t think this is a bonus track or anything, it’s just a part of the same song. And that second half is a really sort of chill (for this album) instrumental, lead by a bassline that slowly gets more riffs over the top of it. And then that bit stops itself, and the main song returns again for like the final half a minute or so. And honestly I was just like, wait, no, go back…….
The actual least listened to track on the album is number 9, The Adventures of Allan Gordon (it’s apparently about a book). Honestly, I’d kinda love to hear this live, because the first minute or so of it is the kind of thing you’d play as an interstitial to keep the audience going while you get your shit ready for the next song. Eventually (and I mean eventually, song’s a third through at this point) the lyrics and such come in, and yeah ok I see why this one isn’t as popular. It’s like, fine? Like, that cut back section is pretty overall mediocre, but when we get back to the screaming and the riffs and the noise its as solid as ever. It’s a little frustrating, because they can do the more lyrical stuff, F.C.P. is right there, but this one doesn’t quite make the mark for me. A shame.
Track 10 is I Just Got This Symphony Goin’, which does not have an actual symphony, but it does present and absolutely killer opening riff, so it’s not all bad. This is one of the songs I most associate with the album, even if it’s one of the ones also on Doppelganger. Its speeding up and slowing down and screaming and singing and lots of interweaving and yeah. I like it. Iunno.
The final song, What Sound Does a Mastodon Make? (I dunno, ask a paleontolgist?), is a full seven minutes, 2 minutes longer than the next longest track. It’s kind of interesting, since the second half of the album going by tracks is much much longer than the first half. It does this really fun bit where the lead guitar and rhythm guitar do their own little call and response thing, immediately followed by one of the weirdest vocal noises I’ve ever heard, and I don’t have a word to describe it, so you’re gonna have to either trust me or listen to it yourself. This song is just really, really long, man, and it goes in a lot of places but none of them are exceptional enough to really justify slogging through a total 7 minutes of it. I’m going to be honest, I’m probably not going to listen to it unless I’m going through the whole album. The extended build near the end is pretty sick, I guess? And the way the last minute just decides to, like, drop everything, and just end with a very quiet, indie-esque instrumental. Like the very “we did it, now we can relax” sort of moment. Lets both you and the band know its over, and you can move on past your energy high to something a bit more chill.
I think the best phrase I can use to describe The Fall of Troy is “ADHD music”. Both in that it feels almost a little distractable sometimes, multidirectional and often not fully resolving its lines, and also in that said lines are great if you’re someone like myself who’s brain needs something to be chewing over while the more conscious parts are trying to do something else. To be clear, I consider this a compliment. Like most music I discuss, this certainly isn’t for everyone, as you’re going to need a tolerance for adrenaline and screaming to enjoy this album, but I do think it’s worth the attempt. Now, I haven’t listened to Doppelganger (or any of the other albums for that manner) in full, so I can’t comment on how the style of The Fall of Troy would evolve over time. But at the very least, this is a very solid starting point for what would become a surprisingly long-lasting act.

Billboard #1s 1978
Under the cut.
Player – “Baby Come Back” -- January 14, 1978
Apparently I'm positively disposed to what's called "yacht rock"? I'd have called it 30-something dinner party rock. Anyway, apparently this is an example. Like all of that genre, this doesn't feel deeply emotional even when the words are. "I was wrong, and I just can't live without you." It's basically calm, and I'd even call it kinda groovy. It's not slow though. It's not going to change the world, but it's good background music for a party among people who have to get home before the babysitter needs to leave.
The Bee Gees – “Stayin’ Alive” -- February 4, 1978
I don't like the movie Saturday Night Fever at all. And I don't like its biggest breakout song either. The lyrics -- who cares, the lyrics are an excuse for Barry Gibb's falsetto to pierce your brain. I was going to clubs during the short disco revival of the 90s and I don't remember this song being played much.
Andy Gibb – “(Love Is) Thicker Than Water” -- March 4, 1978
This guy was a teen idol. I didn't understand the popularity of the teen idols when I was a teenager either. To me, they almost always have the sex appeal of a potato. As for this song, musically it sounds like a TV theme, and the lyric "love is thicker than water" gives me the giggles.
The Bee Gees -- "Night Fever" -- March 18, 1978
Barry Gibb's falsetto. Nope. The lyrics make this technically a love song, but they don't matter, this song exists to be danced to. Badly.
Yvonne Elliman -- "If I Can't Have You" -- May 13, 1978
This was written by Barry Gibb. Obviously I don't like it, though thankfully Yvonne Elliman's voice is fine. It's about how if she can't have you, she doesn't want anybody else. She sings in a kind of weird breathy way. And, as it's a Barry Gibb song, the second half of the song consists of the chorus repeating 50 times with some boring instrumental stuff.
Wings -- "With A Little Luck" -- May 20, 1978
That's quite the synth blast. Some of the lyrics are nice: "There's no end to what we can do together." But others are terrible: "The willow turns his back on inclement weather" and "with a little luck" repeated at least two dozen times. The message seems to be that you should pretend difficulties aren't there and just chant a bunch or something. But willows don't turn their "backs" on the wind. They bend with it, and that's how they avoid breaking. So this song's message makes no sense and it is musically boring except for the first couple bars.
Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams -- "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" -- June 3, 1978
Musically this sounds like a parody of the late 70s. It's weirdly peppy and sounds like a commercial jingle, but it's about breaking up. My brain keeps trying to mash these things together and returning a divide by zero error. These two paired up again later to sing the "Family Ties" theme, which is actually a better song, and I'm not saying the "Family Ties" theme is great.
John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John -- "You're the One That I Want" -- June 10, 1978
I confess: I like Grease. The musical, not the substance. Yes, it's nostalgia-bait, and it's goofy as hell in many ways. And yet I can't resist it. I also like this song. It's been picked over and analyzed to death, about how Sandy's changing for Danny how awful blah blah blah. Well, he was wandering around in a letter sweater before this song, planning to become a square for her. Then Sandy sings at him "You'd better shape up," and he ends up following her around in public on his knees. Sandy wouldn't have wanted Danny in the first place, and become friends with the Pink Ladies, if there weren't a "bad girl" in her screaming to get out. What can I say -- I identify. Also this song is catchy and fun, Olivia Newton-John is excellent at acting a song, John Travolta was excellent at cheese, and they had great chemistry.
Andy Gibb -- "Shadow Dancing" -- June 17, 1978
Andy Gibb died young because massive amounts of cocaine and alcohol wrecked his heart, so I feel bad about disliking all his songs. But feeling bad about his short life doesn't mean I feel good about his music. This was written by Barry Gibb, so of course I want nothing to do with it. Also Andy Gibb's voice is incredibly weak. The lyrics are about sex, whatever, I don't care because musically this song is pretty appalling to me.
The Rolling Stones -- "Miss You" -- August 5, 1978
It's interesting hearing Mick Jagger try to weaken his voice to sound like other male singers of the time. This is disco. With a rock edge, because it's the Stones, but still... disco. Specifically, Bee Gees-inspired disco. Including the falsetto interludes. Nope nope nope, I do not accept this from The Rolling Stones.
The Commodores -- "Three Times A Lady" -- August 12, 1978
I can't hear this song without hearing Buckwheat. So um. Lionel Richie is the lead singer here, and I don't like any Lionel Richie song I have ever heard, and this is a Lionel Richie song. Eddie Murphy's version as Buckwheat is better.
Franki Valli -- "Grease" -- August 26, 1978
Grease, the musical, is a not-really-guilty pleasure of mine. "Grease", the song, isn't. It's the worst song on the track. It's about nothing, it sounds 70s and not even 70s pretending to be 50s, and it's Franki Valli. Thankfully he doesn't do falsetto, but I still find his voice unpleasant. Also the song has almost nothing to do with the musical.
A Taste of Honey -- "Boogie Oogie Oogie" -- September 9, 1978
Disco, but disco with actual oomph, unlike anything that came anywhere near Barry Gibb. It's one of those dance songs commanding you to dance, and it works. It's got an interesting, and existent, bassline. Hazel Payne's voice is good. The song changes up a bit musically throughout. It's excellent, even if "boogie" sounds a little silly these days.
The Exiles -- "Kiss You All Over" -- September 30, 1978
I said "ew" when I saw this song on the list and I stand by that. There's a lot worse, certainly. I can't even pinpoint exactly why I feel "ew" about this song. The sentiment is fine. The music is fine. It's not a song where the guy demands something of the woman he's singing to without thinking of her feelings. I dunno. It's probably fine. Maybe it's the whole "fine" thing that makes me feel somewhat creeped out. It should be a sexy song and it's just not.
Nick Gilder -- "Hot Child in the City" -- October 28, 1978
This guy looks like Tom Petty. But he's no Tom Petty. The song's about a teenage sex worker, so uh, there's that. The singer doesn't sound too upset about it, but he doesn't sound too anything about it. This song should have some kind of grit one way or another, but it doesn't. It's nothing. And that's particularly bad when it's such a heavy topic.
Anne Murray -- "You Needed Me" -- November 4, 1978
Anne Murray has a beautiful voice. This song is about having been at the absolute bottom, then someone comes along and loves you, which is a great sentiment. But it should soar and never does. It lacks a chorus, and it needs a big blowout of a chorus. As-is, it feels unfinished and unsatisfying.
Donna Summer -- "MacArthur Park" -- November 11, 1978
Donna Summer is an amazing singer. But wtf is this. "Someone left the cake out in the rain" sung with incredible sorrow is just odd. And then it goes disco, because of course, but -- what? Show me someone's master's thesis on this and maybe I'll understand the song. As it is I am simply confused.
Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond -- "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" -- December 2, 1978
One singer whose singing I despise, and another singer whom I forget exists when I'm not reminded of him. Looking up the lyrics after trying to listen to the song for about 20 seconds, they're lamenting about a failing relationship. With the reasons apparently being "you don't bring me flowers/ you don't sing me love songs." Yeah, uh, if you want the same exact kind of romantic effort put into a long-term relationship as was there in the beginning, you will be disappointed. She doesn't bring you flowers, but what about that dinner she cooked? He doesn't sing you love songs, but how about the fact that he does the dishes and puts the kids to bed? No wonder divorce rates were so high in the 70s. Yep, I hate it.
Chic -- "Le Freak" -- December 9, 1978
This one was played a lot at the clubs I went to in the 90s. It's a good funky dance song with a memorable bassline.
BEST OF 1978: "Boogie Oogie Oogie" by A Taste of Honey. WORST OF 1978: "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" by Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond, but also anything with Barry Gibb's fingerprints on it.

The Best Albums of 2020 (and from the Before Times)
I read a lot of year-end music roundups, and several this year have come with a resonant caveat: It’s been harder to discover new music this year, both because of physical limitations (no shows, no record-store browsing, no chats with friends about your latest finds), and because the way we used music fundamentally changed. It certainly did for me. Rather than serving as the backdrop for a commute or a night out, it created moments of solace from cabin fever while doing dishes, or showering, or running semi-weekly errands. So I often turned to what was comfortable and familiar, songs that conjured memories and feelings to get me through the day. Even on the rare occasions of social listening, the groups I was with drifted into nostalgia — middle school dance tracks, mid-2000s emo, inherited dad rock, even songs from just a year or two ago, when everything was simpler, relatively speaking.
That’s not to say nothing new moved me. There was a handful of albums and songs that were crucial to getting through the doldrums. They soundtracked bike rides, long walks, longer drives and lots of small moments mentioned above. But I don’t think I can think about my favorite music of this year without thinking about the albums of the past that got me through it. Besides, one of the many lessons 2020 taught is that time is a bizarre illusion anyway. (This exercise also lets me write about some recent albums that I didn’t get to write about when they were actually released.
So here are the albums, past and present, that made 2020 bearable. I hope you found yours, too.
Tame Impala, “The Slow Rush”
Tumblr media
Tame Impala’s fourth LP came out on Valentine’s Day. That afternoon, Claire and I had a lunch date to mark the occasion before we got on a plane to visit my parents. The night before, we had gone out to dinner with friends visiting from San Francisco and then to a bar, where we huddled next to strangers on a water bed. Roughly a month later, all of this would be unimaginable, and Kevin Parker’s lyrics to “One More Year” would be eerily prescient as we settled into this new normal:
But now I worry our horizon's been nothing new 'Cause I get this feeling and maybe you get it too We're on a rollercoaster stuck on its loop-de-loop 'Cause what we did one day on a whim Has slowly become all we do
The song is really about surrendering to time, and not worrying about it passing in spite of your ambivalence. The opening chants of Parker’s “Gregorian Robot Choir” make it easy to surrender. They carry you into a world where, as the cover art suggests, all that time you were worrying about has already passed, so you might as well dance. At the same time, the songs that follow, like “Borderline,” “Breathe Deeper” and “Lost In Yesterday” make it easy to remember what it was like to dance in a sweaty room with people you love, and to look forward to doing it again, after a little more time passes.
Fleet Foxes, “Shore”
Tumblr media
There’s something comforting about the fact that Fleet Foxes released this record on the exact moment of the autumnal equinox. It’s a reminder that nature has its own rhythms that carry on regardless of what occurs in our human lives. They give us a measure of certainty in uncertain times. One of these rhythms — death — looms large in “Sunblind,” an ode to Robin Pecknold’s departed musical forebears: David Berman, Bill Withers, John Prine and others. This song exuding calm acceptance shifts into “Can I Believe You,” which wrestles frankly with doubt and fear.
These tracks contain profound contradictions, but sonically, they're both bright, hopeful and sure. That’s what made this album such a balm in the sixth month of this pandemic, a time of both growing darkness and hope for what might be on the other side. It reminds us that there’s power and beauty in feeling all these things at once.
Lil Uzi Vert, “Eternal Atake”
Tumblr media
This one spent two years in label purgatory, but it finally arrived in March to prove Lil Uzi Vert can do it all. He’s at his most versatile here, spitting and crooning, boasting and balladeering. “You Better Move” is an early standout packed with playful nostalgia, including a beat that samples that classic PC pinball game and delightful jabs like these:
Yeah, step on competition, changin' my shoes Green shirt, bitch, I'm Steve, where is Blue? Every chain on, I pity a fool I'm an iPod, man, you more like a Zune Made her eat on my dick with a spoon, ew Versace drawers, bitch, you Fruit of the Loom
Then there are the melodic tracks like “Urgency,” which compel you to hum along even on the first listen. The excellent diversity made it worth the wait for this hourlong journey to another planet.
Sturgill Simpson, “Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1: The Butcher Shoppe Sessions”
Tumblr media
I haven’t spent much time with Sturgill Simpson outside of 2014′s “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music,” and I can’t say I’ve ever listened to another bluegrass album all the way through. But these new cuts of songs picked from Simpson’s catalog are wonderfully enticing. Simpson puts the talents of his backing band front and center, and their harmonies and rhythms illuminate his vivd songwriting in new ways. It was a great introduction to the genre for me.
Fiona Apple, “Fetch The Bolt Cutters”
Tumblr media
I got here after the hype, after the perfect 10, after all the year-end number-ones. Fiona Apple lives up to all of it. Her compositions are complex and evocative, the lyrics tender and biting at once. Her artistry is unsparing. The chorus to the title track is already getting stuck in my head, and I can’t wait to spend more time with this one.
Bea Troxel, “The Way That It Feels” (2017)
Tumblr media
Almost a decade has passed since I first saw Bea Troxel play. She was in an incredibly talented trio with two of my high school classmates: Maeve Thorne (who has an entrancing solo EP of her own), and Rita Pfeiffer (the violinist on this record). They ended up winning my school’s battle of the bands, and I got to interview them for the student newspaper. Shortly after our senior year, they recorded an album that still outshines most of today’s indie folk. So I jumped at the chance to all three of them again in Brooklyn.
Troxel’s performance in particular was a revelation. I won’t ever forget how I fell into a trance as she picked away at “Talc,” which exemplifies her gift for natural metaphor. I haven’t stopped playing her record since, and it’s been a constant comfort throughout this year. Her voice is one of a kind, her songwriting is rich, and the compositions flow together beautifully. I can’t wait for more; in the meantime, “The Way That It Feels” will be on repeat.
Travis Scott, “Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight” (2016)
Tumblr media
There’s been much ado about the brilliance of “Astroworld,” Travis Scott’s magnum opus, but I have a soft spot for his sophomore LP, where he reached the peak of the spare and heavy sound that started to take shape on “Owl Pharaoh.” There are plenty of sonic layers here, and the ordering of the tracks is a craft in itself — a series of peaks and valleys that glides from the haze of “beibs in the trap” to the climax of “goosebumps” and then into the cool waters of “pick up the phone.” It feels like Scott is guiding you to and from these destinations. The journey is, as The Weeknd might put it, “wonderful.”
Harmonium, “Harmonium” (1974)
Tumblr media
One of my pandemic binges was “Letterkenny,” the sharp Ontario-set sitcom with top-notch banter and a great soundtrack full of indie hits and Canadian deep cuts. The fight scenes are elegantly choreographed, but so are the handful of sequences at the end of key episodes that reveal the show’s emotional bedrock. One such scene is set to Harmonium’s “Un musicien parmi tant d'autres” — the main characters are reveling in a bar with their Québécois pals, whom they’ve just helped beat up a rival group. As the song builds to its climactic chorus, leading man Wayne, surrounded by couples, realizes his longing for companionship. Another fight breaks out, but instead of joining in, Wayne makes his way through the slow-motion fray toward the woman he’ll propose to in the next season. (Their relationship later falls apart, but that doesn’t undercut this scene’s beauty.)
This is probably the first foreign-language album I’ve listened to in full, but all of it evokes that feeling for me — the joy of walking through the chaos to reach what’s really important. Not a bad sentiment for these times.
Bon Iver, “22, A Million”
Tumblr media
To talk about this weird, dark and brilliant album, I need to talk about “715 - CR∑∑KS.” Everyone I’ve talked to about the third track on “22, A Million” either loves it or can’t stand it. I’m devoted to it to the extent that it was my most-played song on Spotify this year. It oscillates between tenderness and fear, between silence and explosions of sound. The lyrics are an epitome of Justin Vernon’s cryptic poetry. It’s isolated and spare and enthralling and beautiful in its own bizarre way — just like the rest of the album, which is rich with themes of persevering through the darkness in spite of the uncertainty about when the light will appear. Vernon is alone on “CR∑∑KS,” but he’s accompanied by a cacophony of his own voice. As alone as we might feel right now, there’s always someone else shouting through the darkness with us, even if we can’t see them.

50 Best Albums (That I Own on Vinyl) of the Decade
It’s hard to comprehend how much transpires over the course of a decade or wrap your head around how long (or short) of time that really is.
But what better way to try than to make a list!
Now, I know “Best of” lists like this one are inherently subjective – and probably say more about their maker’s preferences than actually reflecting the best music released in a particular time period. And, I’ll be the first to admit that the list below is incredibly limited, and that I need to widen my exposure to more artists and genres.
But hey, this is all in fun.
So feel free to debate, pick apart or share your own favorite albums from the past decade. But before you dive in, just a few quick points for context:
-I only ranked albums I actually own on vinyl released between 2010 and 2019, which limited my choices to about 170 records.
-I only ranked new music released this past decade, so no reissues or older material released for the first time (sorry Prince’s Piano & A Microphone and Originals).
-I first started buying vinyl around ’09-’10 and started off purchasing mostly new releases before my habits shifted and I started looking for older records. This shows in the list below – nearly a quarter of the albums below were released in 2010 and almost 70% from the first half of the decade.
And we’re off…
50. Centipede Hz, Animal Collective (2012)
Let’s be honest, it was impossible for Animal Collective to top a universally acclaimed and era-defining album – and it was unfair to expect them to. But maybe the continuous onslaught of bizarre and eclectic music found on Centipede Hz was just what we needed after all.
49. Singles, Future Islands (2014)
So much more than Sam Herring’s pelvis busting dance moves and “Seasons (Waiting On You),” every track on Singlesbursts with life and heart pumping  energy. To quote Letterman: I’ll take all of that you got.
48. Paul’s Tomb: A Triumph, Frog Eyes (2010)
I don’t think I’ll ever understand Carey Mercer’s lyrics, but I’m certain I’ll never tire of getting lost in his hidden words and knotty melodies.
47. Leaving Atlanta, Gentleman Jesse (2012)
Thirty seven minutes of Pure Power Pop Perfection (note the capital “Ps”).
46. Burst Apart, The Antlers (2011)
If there’s another album with a song titled “Putting the Dog to Sleep” that is as haunting and beautiful as this one, I don’t want to know about it.
45. Carrion Crawler/The Dream, Thee Oh Sees (2011)
With John Dwyer churning out record after record in the ‘10s, it should come as no surprise that at least one landed on this list (and they’re all great). Garage rock. Surf rock. Post-punk rock. Psych rock. Noise rock. Rock rock. I don’t care what you call it, Thee Oh Sees put the pedal to the metal on Carrion Crawler/The Dream, taking you for a wild ride that never lets up.
44. 1989, Taylor Swift (2014)
Irresistibly catchy, everyone needs to satisfy their pop sweet tooth every now and then. 1989 is so sugary, it might just give you a cavity or two.
43. City Music, Kevin Morby (2017)
The city. The countryside. A beach. Aboard a train. At the pearly gates. It doesn’t matter where you listen to City Music because Kevin Morby’s jams will immediately transport you to your own laid back, happy place.
42. Remind Me Tomorrow, Sharon Van Etten (2019)
You’ll regret it if you keep waiting to listen this powerhouse – and powerful – synth-soaked record.
41. You Want It Darker, Leonard Cohen (2016)
It doesn’t get much darker, bleaker or sparse than this, but I wouldn’t want it any other way from the masterful Leonard Cohen.
40. American Dream, LCD Soundsystem (2017)
Retirement never sounded so good.
39. Capacity, Big Thief (2017)
Quietly captivating, mesmerizing and elegant, Big Thief knock you out without you even realizing it.
38. St. Vincent, St. Vincent (2014)
Annie Clark’s shapeshifting album won’t only shred your face off, it somehow makes you feel smarter, too.
37. Before Today, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti (2010)
So, so weird and so, so good.
36. Expo 86, Wolf Parade (2010)
Like #50, Wolf Parade might always live in the shadow and expectations of a towering classic, yet somehow Spencer Krug and Dan Boeckner still continually craft eccentric and bombastic rock albums. Expo 86 is no exception, and it is an underrated classic in its own right.
35. Golden Hour, Kacey Musgraves (2018)
Like a sunset or sunrise, Golden Hour radiates beauty and warmth with each of its glowing tracks.
34. Yuck, Yuck (2011)
Despite their name and its hideous album cover, there’s nothing gross about Yuck’s infectious indie rock.
33. Play It Strange, The Fresh & Onlys (2010)
I once saw The Fresh & Onlys play at a tiny club in D.C. It might’ve been the loudest show I’ve ever been to – my ears rang for days. This record is just as rollicking, hazy and good as that show was loud.
32. Natalie Prass, Natalie Prass (2015)
There’s a reason “Welcome to 1979” is stamped in tiny letters on this vinyl’s inner ring – it’s silky smooth, filled with impeccable soft ballads and finely tuned jams – and just a tinge of funk.
31. I Am Easy To Find, The National (2019)
Few bands matched the consistent output of quality albums in the ‘10s as The National. They had one heck of a run, and I Am Easy To Find was a fascinating way to end it – a 21st rock album that felt more complex and expansive than anything they’d done before.
30. Melodrama, Lorde (2018)
Everything a pop record should be and then some – bold, breathtaking and exuberant.
29. Just Enough Hip To Be Woman, Broncho (2014)
If you can’t tell from its playful title, this pop rock album wants nothing more than to have fun – and it succeeds on every level.
28. Avi Buffalo, Avi Buffalo (2010)
Sometimes all you want is a light, sunny and meandering album to wash over you and get lost in, and this one will do the trick every time.
27. Hippies, Harlem (2010)
Imagine a band practicing inside a garage inside a garage inside another garage and you’ve got Harlem. This is garage rock to the max – and at its rambunctious best.
26. Puberty 2, Mitski (2016)
It’s hard to describe Puberty 2. Sure, it might sound like simple dreamy indie rock, but it ebbs and flows in unexpected ways that leaves you guessing where it’s heading next.
25. mbv, My Bloody Valentine (2013)
Picking up right where they left off – even if it was more than a decade later – My Bloody Valentine reminded everyone why they are the masters of reverb soaked shoegaze.
24. A Moon Shaped Pool, Radiohead (2016)
Even after all these years and albums, Radiohead still found a way to reinvent themselves and push the boundaries of rock music – and our expectations of them. With gorgeous arrangements and slow-burning, tension filled tracks, AMSP proves that even Radiohead can still take risks – and proves rock bands can make quiet, intimate songs sound epic. Oh yeah, and it has “True Love Waits.”
23. Art Angels, Grimes (2015)
Grimes gave us the future of pop music before most could even envision it. This laid the groundwork for all the challenging and intricate – and danceable – pop music that would follow. And it still sounds ahead of its time.
22. Meet Me At The Muster Station, PS I Love You (2010)
The first sounds out of Paul Saulnier’s mouth on Meet Me At The Munster Station aren’t words at all but two short, ecstatic yelps. And this same boundless energy and passion bleeds through on every fuzzy, raucous second of every track. Did I mention there’s a song called “Butterflies & Boners”?
21. More Than Any Other Day, Ought (2014)
You really ought to listen to Ought if you aren’t already. Tim Darcy and co. sound a bit uneasy, paranoid and self-aware, but they make the most minute challenges sound so exhilarating and life-altering – even the struggle deciding between two percent and whole milk at the grocery store.
20. Lemonade, Beyoncé (2017)
All hail Queen Bey.
19. Twin-Hand Movement, Lower Dens (2010)
This album sounds like 2 am on a dark, rainy Saturday night – in the best way imaginable.
18. Tomboy, Panda Bear (2011)
You can always count on Panda Bear to make hypnotic, loopy electronic music sound so breezy and effortless.
17. Modern Vampires Of The City, Vampire Weekend (2013)
I don’t know why, but I want to dislike Vampire Weekend so much. But that’s impossible when their music is so damn good and every note sounds so neat and perfect.
16. Past Life Martyred Saints, EMA (2011)
Just do yourself and listen to this album please.
15. The Archandroid, Janelle Monáe (2010)
Blending too many genres to count, this is what I imagine music sounds like in space.
14. Carrie & Lowell, Sufjan Stevens (2015)
I’ll let you know how I feel about this one after I stop crying.
13. The Suburbs, Arcade Fire (2010)
It’s everything you either love or hate about Arcade Fire. Grand, sincere and sweeping rock that swings for the fences with every guitar chord, drumbeat and horn blast. I love it.
12. Silence Yourself, Savages (2013)
Savages grab you by the throat and never let go – this is one intense album.
11. Helplessness Blues, Fleet Foxes (2011)
This might be the epitome of ‘10s indie rock – and for good reason. Introspective, sensitive and searching for some greater meaning, Robin Pecknold holds nothing back and lays it all out on Helplessness Blues.
10. Kaputt, Destroyer (2011)
Dan Bejar is an enigma and seemingly reluctant rock star. I saw him perform an acoustic set where he spent a majority of the time playing with his back towards the audience (although in fairness, it was at a free outdoor show on a college campus with people mostly chatting obnoxiously over him), and yet it’s as if his creativity requires him to constantly release new albums and show them off. Kaputt is as equally strange and mysterious – and just as creative – as its maker.
9. Black Star, David Bowie (2016)
Take away the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding this album’s release and it would still be in the top tier of David Bowie’s extensive catalogue. Experimenting until the very end, Bowie morphed into something entirely new one last time. Part jazz, part rock and part I’m not sure what you would call it, the results were once again out of this world. He couldn’t give it all away, but we’re sure thankful for what he could.
8. Bon Iver, Bon Iver (2011)
Shedding the cabin in the woods vibe, Justin Vernon took a giant leap forward with Bon Iver and made ‘80s soft rock popular.
7. Celebration Rock, Japandroids (2012)
Perhaps the most aptly named album on this list, no other album exudes the joy of making music and rocking out with your buddy than this one. It’s hard to believe all that noise and energy comes from just two people.
6. Burn Your Fire For No Witness, Angel Olsen (2014)
Angel Olsen’s hypnotic and seductive vocals, lyrics and guitar suck you in immediately, mesmerizing you from the first gentle strums to the peaks and valleys of “Lights Out” and “Stars” all the way to the closer’s pulsing drumbeats and majestic piano.
5. Black Messiah, D'Angelo And The Vanguard (2015)
Oozing with cool, sexy and confident R&B funk, D’Angelo returned after 14 years with an instant soul masterpiece.
4. The Monitor, Titus Andronicus (2010)
It says a lot when a band can a.) make an hour plus punk rock record b.) loosely base it on the Civil War c.) quote Abraham Lincoln d.) close it out with a 14 minute track inspired by a famous naval battle and e.) still make you want to listen to it over and over and over again.
3. Lost In The Dream, The War On Drugs (2014)
The rare album that can feel vast and ambitious and yet deeply private and personal all at once. You really will get lost in these soaring songs.
2. Halcyon Digest, Deerhunter (2010)
At times perfectly melodic and structured and at others feeling on the brink of falling apart, Halcyon Digest is a paradox – sounding peaceful, bright and idyllic while also peering over the edge into something darker. This is a remarkable record from a remarkable band. If not for the abrupt end to the darkly beautiful closer “He Would Have Laughed,” Halcyon Digest sounds like it could go on forever.
1. Let England Shake, PJ Harvey (2011)
A stunning, thought-provoking, and moving – not to mention endlessly listenable – transcendent piece of art about life and the Great War. PJ Harvey doesn’t hold back on the brutality and absurdity of armed conflict, and the album’s devastating closing track – “The Colour of the Earth” – will linger in your mind long after the record stops spinning. As powerful today as it was eight years ago, this album will remain timely and important for years – and decades – to come.

Survey #262
WoW will probably start to take over my life again tomorrow oof so expect surveys to slow down some.
What do you wish people wouldn't call you? The only one I don't really like is Girt calling me "kid." He doesn't mean it in a derogatory way or anything like that; he's just always called me that since I was a high school freshman and he was a senior. Now as an adult that's been through things I don't believe anyone deserves, it's kinda weird but more so frustrating as, regardless of his intentions, I somewhat feel belittled. I've never said anything directly about my discomfort, though, so it's my own fault. I just don't want to make him feel bad for doing it for years lmao. What do people say about your name upon learning it for the first time? They don't say anything; my name is very ordinary. Why did you choose the hair length you have? I have a few reasons. The biggest is because I was just bored of average, long hair, and the fact I was at the time having a very hard time with self-care. My hair would get incredibly knotted to where it was hard to even brush it sometimes. Makes me shiver thinking back on it. For my own sanity and ease, it needed to be gone. Also, with how STUPID hot I get, cutting it all off helped with the weight of my hair (it's v thick) but more importantly how hot it made me it the warm months. Zero regrets chopping it all off, omg. If your hair could be ANY color, what would you pick? At this very moment, I really want silver hair. Do you wish your hair was longer or shorter than it is now? It needs a trim. Do you think you're attractive? (It's okay to say yes =P) No; I think I wouldn't look ALL to bad if I lost some more weight (I've literally been on a weight loss plateau for two fuckin years). When I was perfectly healthy, I didn't think I was very pretty even back then, but now that I look back, I feel I was decently pretty. Not gorgeous, but. What is your favorite band? Ozzy Osbourne. :') What is your favorite movie? The Lion King. The second one is like directly behind it. Finding Nemo is also very precious to me. What is your favorite book or magazine? The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo. What is your favorite song? Ugh, this is impossible. I love way way too many. I suppose maybe... "Death Inc." by Motionless In White? Idk. What is your favorite color to wear? Black, duh. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? South Africa because I want to spend time with and take pictures at the Kalahari Meerkat Project and especially pet a Whiskers meerkat. I WILL cry. Meerkats literally changed my life. So many people I wouldn't know... If you got the chance and wouldn't get caught, would you cheat on a lover? NOOOOO the guilt though. Someone drops a fifty dollar bill and doesn't notice. Will you tell them? Definitely. I'd feel awful otherwise. Would you ever pierce something on your face? I already have my lip and tongue pierced, and I did have my nostril pierced, too. I want more, particularly an undereye microdermal if I can switch to contacts... which I don't like. I think it'd look pretty dumb with glasses. Are you selfish? EVERYONE should be to a degree depending on the occasion. Doing what is best for you is not a bad thing. Are you mean to people who are different from you? Wow no. I find people "different" from me interesting. Do you make fun of obese people? By the BMI definition, I am one of those people. So take a guess? Do you eat when you're upset? I have to fight that extremely hard, because I usually do experience the impulse to comfort eat when I'm very depressed. I've gotten way better at it, though. What if you had to choose between feeding yourself or feeding your pets? I honestly don't know for sure what I'd do... but I think I would prioritize my pets, honestly. It would break me to watch them suffer and lose weight. What if you saw someone being beaten on the street? YOOOO I READ THIS AS "EATEN" FIRST. But anyway I'd call the cops ASAP. There's a possibility I'd intervene if I felt myself capable of taking on the assailant. What if it was you being beaten? According to the night terrors I've had beyond count, curse like a motherfucker and fight back while calling for help. Who's the most important person to you (related)? Mom. Who's the most important person to you (non-related)? Sara. What's more important to you, happiness or success? Happiness. What's more important to you, your happiness or someone else's? Depends on the person. List the ten most important things to you: Oh, yikes. No order: 1.) My peace of mind, health, and happiness; 2.) my family; 3.) my pets; 4.) my career future; 5.) my friends; 6.) a YouTuber I've never met lmao; 7.) my pebble from my partial hospitalization program; 8.) Teddy's ashes; 9.) the Mark mug Sara gave me sobs; 10.) and the RP site I'm on. Like if it disappeared tomorrow with all the profiles and history and stuff I would break the earth in half oof. Have you ever lived in a mobile home? No. Have you ever had your bedroom in a basement? No. How many times in the past week have you eaten fast food? Hm. I don't think once. In the house - shoes, socks, slippers or bare feet? Bare feet.\ Do you consider dogs inside or outside pets? Usually indoor, depending on the breed and the time of year. What’s your favourite piece of furniture in your house? ig my bed? Have you ever had a crush on a friend’s parent? Yikes no. Do you prefer carbonated or uncarbonated drinks? Sucker for carbonated over here. Favorite thing that you can see up in the sky? A full moon. Would you rather eat at the table or in your room? I'm so used to eating in my room. Do you like the sound of birds singing when you wake up, or is it annoying? I love it. If someone gave you a kitten, would you keep it? I'd love to, but it'd really be my mom's choice. What’s your ideal activity for a rainy day? Nap oh lawd. Favorite type of cracker? Cheez-Its. Banana sandwich... yum or yuck? Only yum with peanut butter. Animal you like to watch but sort of creeps you out: Spiders. Bagels or English Muffins? Bagels. Do you like to daydream about sex? I do it sometimes. Which of your parents do you laugh more with? My dad is really funny. Have you ever been to an open casket wake or funeral? Wake, yes. Who mows the lawn at your house? A family friend. Have you ever written a story from beginning to end? When I was little and was writing that meerkat story, yes. I started on the sequel but didn't get far. What’s a big turn on for you? Being genuinely interested in what makes me me. Actually wanting to know the littlest things about me. Just show sincere interest. Are you doing anything tomorrow? I do know I'm fuckin finally getting my laptop home. Does your car have a name? N/A Do you own clothes from any celebrity clothing lines? No, but a bitch is getting a Cloak shirt or hoodie at some point. Who was the last person you ranted about? My bitch of a cousin for being a disrespectful fuck when all my dying grandmother wants is to talk as a group with the whole family. I ranted to Mom though, not in the group chat because I'm actually mature enough to not talk shit when, again, all our grandma wants is peace and love between us at the end of her life. I was SEETHING. Know any magic tricks? I don't remember any. I LOOOOOVED those magic kits as a kid, though. Is there music in your head right now? Right now "Dirty Pretty" by In This Moment is on, so does that count as "in my head?" Would you like to become a dancer? It'd be very cool, most certainly, and due to taking dance classes so long, I tend to think of potential dances in my head when I hear like... any song, lol. I'd love to be one if I had the grace and endurance + no hyperhydrosis. Name one person of the same sex as you you wouldn't mind doing: Hunny I'm bisexual, there's a lot, lmao. Dream woman? Uhhhh. Maybe my friend Alon. She was like one of my first hints I wasn't straight, lmao. But idk, I find soooo many women to be attractive. What is the most gory film you've seen? One of the Saw movies. What a surprise, ik. Ever fallen down a hole? ZOINKS no. Do you work better in a clean or messy environment? Clean, durr. Do you know any vegans? Only online. Do you like bananas? I am VERY picky with bananas. They have to be perfect. My preferred ripeness lasts only like, two days. .-. What's a film you've seen that confused you? Oh boy, idk. I don't watch many films... especially if I'm confused and the plot isn't great, I'll stop watching. WAIT!!!!!! NO!!!!!!!! I went to see Warcraft when it came out and I was so fuckin lost just because the orcs' voices are so goddamn deep that I just sat there like "uhhhh sir come again????" I didn't play Classic, and I'm not great at remembering every aspect of the plot, so. I'm to this day p confused lmao. Do you ever wear black lipstick? I really only ever wear black. What is next to your bed? I have a white shelf to my left where I put my meds, a drink, the fan... that kind of stuff. My cat's food bowl is to the right of it on the floor. Are your fingernails dirty? Nope. Have you ever fell for someone believing you could "fix" them? Not for that reason, no. Describe a picture of yourself that you hate: LASKJDLKFJAOWJE my friend took a picture of me eating a hot dog once and joked she was putting that shit on Facebook and it was funny as shit but thank Christ she was in fact joking. Would you rather play a good or an evil character in a play? While I'd love to be the evil one, I'd probably make it too cheesy because I am a BAD actress. Has anybody ever lied to you just to impress you? Story of one of my "best" friendships. What's your favourite shade of blue? Baby blue, probs. Can you remember a world before iPods? I do indeed. On rides to school when I sat in the back, I would bring one of those portable CD players with me to play discs. Where did you go on your last date? I can't remember the place's name... Lume's? Something like that? Breakfast place in Illinois. Do people find you "cute"? It happens sometimes. Who does the best remixes? Oh idk, I don't pay much attention to this. Where do you get your news? Facebook, lmao. What social stigma does society need to get over? What DOESN'T it need to get over???? What was the last photo you took? Probably something funny on Facebook to send to Sara lmao. I will get memes to her some way. What mythical creature do you wish actually existed? As badly as I want to say dragons, I don't think it'd be a great idea, heh... Maybe dryads. What are you interested in that most people aren't? As of recently, TARANTULAS. I've fallen in LOVE with them. What's the most ridiculous thing you have bought? No clue. What sounds hit you with major nostalgia every time you hear them? The gem collecting sound from Spyro. It was my text ringtone on my last phone! I need to move it over to my current one. What was the biggest realization you have had about yourself? I was possibly the bigger villain than Jason in the breakup. But idk. What topic could you spend forever talking about? Gay rights. Which way should toilet paper hang, over or under? In the original patent, it was designed as going over. GMM knowledge. Therefore I find over as correct, BUT I ultimately don't care like... at all. I don't even really notice when I go in the bathroom. Are you usually early or late? Usually slightly early. What do you wish you knew more about? Politics so I could be a more helpful member of society alksdjfka;lw What is the most annoying question you've been asked? It's not really like, annoying I guess, but the closest would be just how frequently people see my lip ring and ask if it hurt. It's incredibly sensitive skin, and even if it wasn't, a needle went all the way through it. Like... guess. News flash: being stabbed hurts, lmao. Like I always explain that it's not awful, but duh, there is pain. What is your favorite milkshake flavor? Yummm chocolate. What was the worst phase in your life? 2020 thinks it's a bad guy, but lemme tell ya, shit's got nothing on 2016. Do you like sprinkles on your ice cream? I hate sprinkles on anything. Just an annoying texture with negligible flavor. The last time you went out to eat - what did you order? It was just a milkshake. Do you have all 32 teeth? I'm missing two wisdom teeth that just never grew in. Do you know how to do the moon walk? Never tried. What is one of your favorite comedy movies? White Chicks. Has anybody ever told you that you have a good singing voice? Yeah. I don't think I do. Onion rings or french fries? Fries. Not an onion ring fan. Who is the best cook that you know? Sara's mom is great, omgggg. She's cooked things I generally don't like yet I wound up enjoying. Can you name 3 different dinosaurs? Let's see: Spinosaurus, stegosaurus, velociraptor. I was a dino kid, man, just gettin' started. *finger guns* What's the largest amount that you can juggle at one time? I can’t juggle. What was your favorite thing to go on at the playground as a kid? I'd daaaash for the swingset. Do you know how much you weighed at birth? How much? Ummm I think 6-something pounds? 7? Where do you spend most of your time at? At home. In my bed. Exciting stuff, y'know. What noise does your favorite animal make? If my memory serves me right, they have over 40 vocalizations, but I'd say barking and chirping are the most ordinary/basic. Have you ever fallen in the toilet when you were little? lol I don't think so. What is the best kind of mac & cheese? I'm a basic-ass Velveeta bitch lmao. Who is your favorite oldies band? Boy oh BOY, you're asking a classic rock/metal addict. Of course it's Ozzy tho. But I love soooo many!! What is your favorite farm animal? Pigs! Do you like to play Monopoly? I'm not a big fan, no. What is the most fun restaurant you have ever been to? I like the vibe of Buffalo Wild Wings. Or I just have good memories there. What size bra do you wear? I'm actually not sure. I haven't bought new ones in a while and I don't think the ones I currently have are the right size anyway. Do you have a ceiling fan in your room? No. Who was your favorite Sesame Street character? I don't remember too well, but I think Cookie Monster? What about Muppet? Idr. What was going through your mind during the presidential campaign? I am sadly paying no attention. What do you think of the Duggar family ( 17+ kids )? Could you handle taking care of that many children? Ew, hell no. I don't believe the number of children warranted in a family should be legally monitored, it's much more difficult than that, BUT RATHER I'm very firm about knowing when it's more than enough. Population control is a thing. NOBODY needs that many kids imo, not even close to that. So far, what is the number one, best decision you have ever made? How has it affected your life? Letting go of Jason/accepting life without him. It has made my life much, much brighter and healthier. Have you reunited with any old friends recently? Was it awkward, or just like old times? No. When was the last time you talked to your first ex? February of 2017. Wow... been a long time. How different is your online personality from your offline personality? I am MUCH more outgoing and talkative online. What are your favorite holiday-themed movies? Jim Carrey's How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, etc... Do you listen to Christmas/winter-themed music when the season comes around? No. Is there anything that you do that’s potentially controversial? Yes. What is your most recent obsession? Most recent, whew, tarantulas. I'm really gonna try talking Mom into letting me get one when/if we move. Do you say “merry Christmas” or “happy holidays”? To you, does it really matter which one is said/you say? Do you do your best to remain politically correct? Instinctually, I say "merry Christmas;" that's what has always been said around me. I personally see zero problem in calling it whatever... Like just appreciate someone wishing you well. You get the concept, and that's all you really need imo. As for political correctness, I'm kinda... down the middle? Like I feel it's been taken way, way too far, but I see some caution in wording as wise. If you could relive one week of your life, which would it be, and why? Would you do anything differently, or keep it all the same? Ugh, my first visit at Sara's. I just loved it so, so much. I think I wouldn't change a thing. It felt perfect. Is there a part of your life you wish you could remember, but can’t? Sometimes when I take these surveys and they ask "how old were you when...", ha ha. Frustrates me. What was the last thing/event to trigger a painful memory? It was last night, actually. The Final Fantasy VII remake is out, and I started watching a YouTuber I like play it. Jason got me to play the original, playing it a lot when we spent time together, but I only got a bit beyond half-way through before my PS3 broke. Cherished memories, so it was decently triggering indeed. I loved the game though and ABSOLUTELY want to see it played out in its entirety, so I shoved past the pain and am glad I did. Now I'm anxiously awaiting the next video aljkdsjfawe Y'ALL I wanna play more FF. What do you think of people that choose not to vote? I can't say anything, seeing as I never have voted before... Are you keeping anything from the people you love? Nothing important, no. Have you ever written a suicide note, whether joking or not? Yes, and that stupid novel is one of my biggest regrets. Who the FUCK would joke about that, though. When was the last time you let something ‘go to your head’? Not even like an hour ago. This happens allllll the time. When are you most likely to show off? Maaan Guitar Hero used to be good for that shit, ha ha. I was an expert at that back in its day. I haven't played it in forever, and on the rare occasion I do, I am suuuper rusty. Which would you prefer: spectacular view of the ocean, or of the mountains? MOUNTAINS!!!!!! Do you follow any dating rules/play any dating games? No. When was the last time you felt extremely confident about something? ME????????? CONFIDENT???????????? WHAT A CONCEPT!!!!!!!!!! When was the last time you blew the seeds off of a dandelion? Wow, not a clue. Probably not since we lived at my old house and I would go on walks down the path. What was the last thing that happened that you couldn’t explain? Oh I dunno. What do you do with all of your spare change? I just keep it in my wallet. Where did you hear about your all-time favorite band? He was and still is one of my mom's favorites! How many cans of soda do you drink in a day? AHHHHHH soda is my biggest nutritional weakness. I refuse to let myself drink more than one a day now though. It's funny and disgusting, when I was HEALTHY AND SKINNY I could on a rare occasion start a fourth can in a single day. Nowadays the thought almost makes me shiver. What is the oldest thing that you own? and the newest? The oldest thing, ummm. Not sure. Probably a stuffed animal in the attic. I just got two new books today! Is there anything you wish you had never found out about? Yep. A number of things. What is something that you refuse to believe in? Astrology. What is something you wish more people believed in? Gay rights. What food is your ultimate comfort food? Ice cream. Have you ever put anything inside a time capsule? What? OMGGGG I remember doing this in elementary school as a class! I don't recall what was in it, though. Is there too much violence on tv, or are people to sensitive? Too sensitive, but also negligent. It's got a lot to do with raising, imo. Don't show kids wild shit at too young of an age, and when they are shown this kind of stuff, you make it obvious that the behavior/content is unacceptable irl. Entertainment is not responsible for someone's shitty actions made with their own volition. What is something you used to fear, but no longer do? My first huge fear was thunderstorms. Now I enjoy them lol. Do you think it’s important to know a 2nd language? Not mandatory, no. Especially depends on if you're going anywhere. Do you know anyone that’s just naturally good at almost everything? My old friend Hannia IMMEDIATELY came to mind. She was the best in class GPA-wise, first chair for flute in band, and just in general STUPID talented. Do you know anyone that’s just bad at everything? BITCH ME What is one emoticon you use often? A sarcastic :^) or <3 What is one emoticon you almost never use? A lot, particularly ones with equal signs for eyes.

NCT 127 Reaction: You singing „Or Nah“ loudly
Warnings: smut, sexual themes Request: NCT127 reaction to their s/o being a The Weeknd Fan an singing „Or Nah“ loudly a/n: Oh my God! I did not even know the song, but it's so good. I hear it all the time and it's also in my "Writing SMUT" playlist. So thanks for the song recommendation.
If somebody don’t know the song, then click here.
Taeyong
Tumblr media
“Don't play with a boss, girl, take it all. Take it for a real one, you gon' get it all.” You forgot you were singing this song aloud until Taeyong suddenly looked at you in surprise.
"I did not know you hear such songs." He laughs and clasps your hip. You take off your headphones and turn to him. "I like The Weekend and the song sounds really nice." “Girl, make that ass clap for young dollar sign. You already know my money go a long time” Taeyong raps the part very quietly into your ear and you were surprised that he knew the song so well. You love his rap voice, it always seemed like it would change him completely. He was becoming more and more dominant and that was incredibly hot. “I’m go as far as you let me. Girl, is you sucking me or fucking me or nah?” The air he breathed out at his rapping stroked over your neck and with his hands he clasped your breasts. You throw your head back and close your eyes. You feel like his hands moved down and pushed your skirt up. With his fingers, he stroked a few times over your panties, so he could check how wet you were. But you were already dripping and everything you wanted was him inside you. It was not long before he pushed aside the material of your panties and pushed with his cock inside you. You moan loudly, as he filled you completely and you enjoy every thrust. It went fast and he was dominant. He controlled you completely and with his hands he firmly grasped your ass. It was not long before you both cum at the same time. Then Taeyong leaned forward and whispered in your ear:
"I think we should listen to the song more often together."
Taeil
Tumblr media
Singing has never been your great strength and you prefer to outsource this task to your boyfriend Taeil. He was gifted, you not at all. But you love to sing and do it rather if you were undisturbed. Mostly this happened in the shower. Your phone was turned up loud and it was playing your favourite song right now.
“Ain't nobody tryna save ya. Baby, get that paper…”, you sing with passion and forget completely the world around you. “…probably got a lot of other bitches owe you favors.” A male voice sounded like angel bells in your ear. You shut you up immediately and turn around. Taeil stood in front of you, naked. You look up at him with wide eyes and are ashamed of your terrible song. "You do not sing that bad, as you always act." He laughed and kissed you. The drops from the shower now reached his dry body and over time you found each other tightly wrapped and completely naked again. The song was on repeat and Taeil sang it again and again with The Weekends part. His voice, the music, has taken you to a new level and you can feel his hard length pressing against you. "Fuck me," you breath and put a leg over his hip, so he could easily penetrate you. Taeil did not let you say that twice. He stroked his length once and pushed himself into you. His movements adapted to the beat of the music and you enjoy how his wet body felt on yours. He was slow, but he penetrated deeply. Fill in every part of your inside. You stay like this for a while and you could go on forever. But suddenly you hear Winwin’s voice.
"Please, I liked this song once, but after the 15th time, knowing that you two are fucking, I'm traumatized for my life."
Johnny
Tumblr media
You were in the club with your boyfriend Johnny. Your bodies were sweaty and the alcohol in your blood makes your joy bigger. Suddenly the beat of your favorite song started and Johnny knew too well that you are a big The Weekend fan. “I'ma smoke this joint then I'ma break you off. I'd be lying if I said you ain't the one. All these tattoos in my skin, they turn you on. Lotta smokin', drinkin' that's the shit I'm on. Heard you not the type that you take home to Mom. Is we fucking when we leave the club or nah?” Together, you sing and dance to the song. You rub your body against Johnny and after a while he stopped. He was frozen and stared at you from this moment. At some point you also stop and look at him in amazement: "Everything okay?" Johnny kept staring at you, but then he grabbed your wrist and pulled you off the dance floor. She walked through the corridors, past the cloakroom, to the bathroom. He pulled you into a cabin and closed the door. The people in it looked at you in wonderment. "What are you doing? There are people everywhere." You laugh, but because of the alcohol, your shame was clearly too low or not even there. But your words did not seem to matter to him, because he pushed you down, so you had to lean against the cistern. He pushed your dress over your hips and with his spit moistened his dick so he could penetrate you right away. Johnny never waited for such things for long, he just got for it. He did not care if there were people in the bathroom. He wanted to have you now and nobody could have done anything about it. When he pushed himself into you, it hit you like a lightning strike. You could not hold it back and you begin to moan. Johnny was big and in his pants too. He was perfect. His cock had the perfect thickness and length. How could anyone say no? And when it's in a toilet in a full club, that's just how it is. "Ahh fuck ..." Do you hear him grunt while his groin slammed against your bottom. You feel like he pushed your best point and you got very excited when you felt the clapping of your skin. He was getting faster and you louder. You hear whispering and a little laughter around you, but you did not care. Johnny as well and kept going until you reached orgasm. With a last loud groan he relieved himself in you. When you stepped out of the cabin, it was quiet and a guy from the security stood in front of you. With an angry look, he kicked you out. From that day you had your house ban in the club, but it was worth it.
Yuta
Tumblr media
"What is your favorite song?" Yuta and you hang out together in the living room. You two have not been dating long, but it has become more and more serious between you. Day by day you get to know each other better. "Or Nah! Do you know this song?" Yuta shakes his head: "Sing it." Immediately you blush, you could not start singing before him! He was a talent and you have never had a vocal lesson once. Overall, you did not even know if you could sing good or bad. "Come on, I'm not judging you." Yuta clearly wanted to lure you out of the reserve and he succeeded. Carefully, you began to sing. “Is you really 'bout your money or nah? Can you really take dick or nah? Can I bring another bitch or nah? Is you with the shits or nah?” "Ohhh you like nasty songs?" Yuta started to grin widely. Immediately you blush and put your hands on your face. You were incredibly embarrassed. Why were you so honest?! You could have chosen another song, but you just choose to pick a song that's all about sex only. But Yuta did not mind, he moved towards you and pulled your hands away from your face. "Maybe you'll show me what else the song is about?" His voice was deep and lascivious. You take a deep breath, because you liked the direction in which Yuta indicated. First you kiss, but these became faster and more intense. Then he puts his hand under your shirt and with his fingertips he plays on the waistband of your pants. You were ready for him, for all his fantasies. But then the door opened and Jungwoo, Taeil and Winwin suddenly stood in the room. "What are you doing already here?" Yuta was irritated because he had actually told them not to come before 10 o'clock in the evening. "It's cold," whines Winwin. "And we are tired!" Johnny added. Yuta sighed and stood up, offering his hand to you. "I think we'll move our date to another room."
Doyoung
Tumblr media
You are singing the song, as Doyoung lay down in bed to you. "What are you listening to?" He asks, taking out some of the earplugs to hear what song you're listen. He listens to the beats for a while, then he turns to you and sings along. “I ain't spending cash for nothin', I wanna see you take it off. I'ma pop this bottle, you gon' give me brain or nah?” Somehow it made you horny when Doyoung sang the lyrics and with a swing you sit up and open his pants. "What do you do?" Doyoung looked at you in surprise, but he let you do everything with him. “I will give you some brain.” You wink and stroke his underpants. Doyoung closed his eyes for a moment and a slight moan escaped him. You notice how the blood in his middle gathered more and more and his length became gradually harder. Slowly you pull the waistband down, down to his thighs. Doyoung's cock was beautiful, perfect, just like him. When you take his length in your hand, he groans again. "Oh my god, look at me!" Doyoung buried his hand in your hair and with your big eyes you look into his. You smile dirty and stretch your tongue so far that the tip of his tongue touches only the tip of his glans. “You want to tease me?” Yes, you wanted to hold him down a bit, but meanwhile his cock was so hard that you knew you could not delay it for long. And you wanted him to come, soon. With your tongue you stroke the veins of his cock and you notice how Doyoungs muscles twitched. "Please take it completely in the mouth!" His petition was forgiving and only today did you follow his bitterness. Your lip wandered up to its top and soon clutched his entire dick. With one hand you move up and down to the movements in your mouth. "Oh god, that's right." Doyoungs moaning was loud and with the other jerks you knew that his climax would come soon. Your lips now form a vacuum around his cock and with the increasing movement you feel the warm fluid that ran down your throat now. With your tongue you lick the rest of him clean.
"I will now only think of you when I hear this song!"
Jaehyun
Tumblr media
Wrapped in a towel, you came to your bedroom. The music boomed out loud in the speakers and you sing along as loud as you can. So you have not noticed that meanwhile your boyfriend was in your apartment. When he suddenly stood in front of you, you are terrified. "Oh my god, Jaehyun!!!!" You hold your hand to your chest and feel your pulse. Your heart raced and when you calm down a bit, you turn the song to pause. "Hey, you could have let it, I like the song." Jaehyun suddenly stood behind you and put his arms over your hips. Then he started to sing: “Can you let me stretch that pussy out or nah?” His hand went under the towel and with his fingers he slipped between your folds. With light pressure he drove over your clitoris. You start to moan slightly, but when he realized that you were getting moister, he pulled the towel down. Then he took you and threw you on the bed. He sang on: “I'm not the type to call you back tomorrow.” He also undressed himself completely, stroked a bit on his cock, leaned down to you and sang in your ear: “But the way you wrapping 'round me is a prob.” With the tip of his glans, he kept pacing up and down on your clit. But this act and its tuners made you crazy. "Jaehyun ... I can’t take it anymore, I want you in me!" Jaehyun started to grin so that the dimples appeared on his cheeks. He took his cock in his hand, looked at you and pushed himself very slowly into you. Your eyes turned inward as he moved faster and faster into you. "Look at you, what a good girl you are who take my cock." Jaehyun's bumps got tighter and tighter. With his fingers he rubs in circles over your clit. It was all too much for you, you could not hold it back. With your fingertips you cling to his forearm. Your voice has been getting louder and louder, and you know that your orgasm has caught you like a wave. Your screams, your lust and your climax also drove Jaehyun into an empire that makes him forget everything. When he realized that he could not hold back, he pulled his cock out and released himself over your stomach. It certainly was not the last time you listened to this song together.
Winwin
Tumblr media
It was already late in the evening, but still Winwin and you had the dorm for you. Everyone was in training or on the way. That's why you take this rare opportunity and try to pimp up your love life. You both lie naked in bed and Winwin asks if you want to try something new. You start to grin and sing: “Do you like the way I flick my tongue or nah? You can ride my face until you're drippin' cum.” Winwin started to laugh. "Haha okay, do you want me to ride my face?" You sit up and look him straight in the eye. He understands that as a yes and he takes your hand. "OK come." You do not let to say that twice and you place your body directly above Winwin's head. Slowly you settle down and he positions his hands on the back of your thighs. Slowly he starts with his tongue to play on your clitoris. You moan and support you with your palms against the wall. The pressure of his tongue became more violent and slowly you begin to move your hips. Your pussy is already deep in Winwin's face and the only thing that could be heard is his smacking and your moaning. Your hips are moving faster and faster and you can feel the pressure getting higher. Like a wave, you feel like your climax piled up, until your orgasm almost kills you. The climax was incredible, so different. Relief, you lie down in the mattress next to your boyfriend. Then you notice that his best piece was also already extremely hard. The precum was already dripping over his top. Winwin turned to you and also sang:
”Can you lick the tip then throat the dick or nah?”
Jungwoo
Tumblr media
“Probably got a lot of other bitches owe you favors. Pussy so good, had to save that shit for later. Took her to the kitchen, fucked her right there on the table. She repping XO to the death, I'm tryna make these bitches sweat, I'm tryna keep that pussy wet, I'm tryna fuck her and her friends.”
"What are you singing?" Jungwoo asked as he came straight to the kitchen. "Do you know this song?" You smile, but Jungwoo shook his head. You pick up his phone and open Apple Music to play him the song. He listens with interest, but he was surprised by the text. "Wow that's pretty ... sexual." You smile and stroke his shoulders: "Do you have problems with that?" Jungwoo suddenly became very shy and had to swallow. Her palms continued to move down over his stomach to his pants opening. "What are you doing there y/n?" You do not answer his question, but pull his pants down further. His cock was not ready yet, but that would change soon. "Y/n you can not do this here, everybody's next door, anyone can come in anytime." "Nobody will come in," you say with a wink and begin to rub his cock. Jungwoo stopped at the next table surface, which your hand on his skin drove him crazy. When he was half stiff in your hand, you start to put it in your mouth. You take his cock deep inside you, so Jungwoo had to fight, that he did not moan loudly. Your movements with your mouth and hand became faster and faster. You knew exactly how you had to attack his dick, because it never took long until he came, if you satisfy him orally. You can feel the bitter taste of his cum trickle down his throat. Jungwoo was breathing hard and his chest was moving up and down. At that moment you suddenly hear a few steps and Jungwoo quickly pulled up his pants. Lucas suddenly came to you and gets some chips out of the closet. "Do you want to snack too?" he asked and hands you the bag. You shake your head:
"No thanks, I've had a snack already."
Mark
Tumblr media
You were mad at Mark. Because you had agreed that you should come to him and then he just sat there and gambled. He has been paying more attention to his video games lately than you and that bothered you. It did not help what you do and meanwhile you were really angry. But then you remembered one last chance: You turn on your favourite song and start singing and dancing. “Can you really take dick or nah? Can I bring another bitch or nah? Is you with the shits or nah? Or nah, or nah.” it booms out of the speakers. You give yourself completely to the music, let your hips circle and pull up your top a little bit. “Can I bring another bitch or nah? Is you with the shits or nah? Or nah, or nah” You knew that your movements and the song would make him horny. You've had sex very often to it and it always stimulated him when he heard it. In the mirror you can see how he looked at your body and his attention was no longer on the PC. Girl, make that ass clap for Young Dolla $ign. You already know my money go a long time” You turn around, go to him and kneel down in front of him. He looks at you with his puppy eyes when you lean forward to him. His gaze was deep into your neckline. "Oh fu ...." Mark took a deep breath as you crossed the fabric of his middle. And gradually you notice how slowly a bump forms. You smile and continue rubbing. Mark bites his fist and can not wait for you to go one step further. You feel that his cock was already full of blood, because he was hard as a hammer. And when he reaches for his waistband to pull his sweatpants down a bit, you stop him. "Do you think after all your action with the video game, will I allow more?" You smile and get up. Mark looks at you stunned: "WHAT? Y/n you can’t do that!" "Look!", You say with a wink and leave the room.

MY TOP 25 KPOP SONGS OF 2019 - PART 4 ✨💫🌟
10.  (여자)아이들((G)I-DLE) - Uh-Oh
Release Date: 06/26
Album: Uh Oh - Digital Single
youtube
If you want to hear something different in every comeback, trust (G)I-DLE. “Uh Oh” is probably the most different song within the rest in this list, and I truly loved the retro-concept worked in it. Beat is sickening, choreography is good, looks are great and the girls all shine (ok maybe Shuhua deserved better but she is lowkey improving now). If you want to listen to a great retro-inspired k-pop track, Uh Oh is the one.
9.  Red Velvet (레드벨벳) - 짐살라빔 (Zimzalabim)
Release Date: 06/19
Album: The ReVe Festival: Day 1
youtube
This year was a slow year for Red Velvet. Kinda wished they had a hit because I truly think they got everything to be the nation’s girl-group. Still, I appreciate they remain loyal to their roots, and they are still allowed to experiment with their music. “Zimzalabim” is, literally, crazy. The chorus is insane, to the point that I say it every time I have an exam as some sort of black magic ritual, but to be completely honest, I don’t know how to describe the instrumentals in this song. It’s a mix of everything, and I’m not lying when I declare that statement. If you wanna feel like on a rollercoaster, listen to it and you’ll know.
8.  청하  CHUNG HA - Snapping
Release Date: 06/24
Album: Flourishing - EP
youtube
“Snapping” has the potential to be my favourite song from Chungha, but I still need time to see if it ages well. Although I can confirm this is her best MV to date; huge budget and amazing quality, with incredible work from the director. The song has a mysterious vibe all thought it and great main-choreography; which is amazing because it’s sassy and rememberable. You can always trust Chungha when it comes to point-main dances. This song is just another proof of how much she’s worthy of your attention, and how amazing she is as a performer.
7.  EVERGLOW (에버글로우) - Adios
Release Date: 08/19
Album: Hush - EP
youtube
As much as I see the resemble with BLACKPINK’s Kill This Love, I truly believe Adios shines for its own colours. This anthem-like track made them get their first music show win, but also put them into the spotlight for a growing-international fanbase; another right step in this k-pop industry as rookie beasts (and not from the Big 3). Huge EDM-drop in the chorus, which I found myself liking it even if we are not in 2010 anymore; Adios is fierce and incredible, showing a more dangerous side of them.
6.  (여자)아이들((G)I-DLE) - Senorita
Release Date: 02/26
Album: I Made - EP
youtube
(G)I-DLE became one of my favourite girl groups ever, in just one year. They are self-produced, they write their own lyrics, and they are not scared of being versatile and experiment with new concepts and genres. “Senorita” (yeah apparently, they don’t know the “ñ”) is a latin-influenced track with a little bit of tango in its verses; cute choreography and amazing aesthetics in the MV. The performances of this song are sickening; with an incredible live band helping them with the track, I will never be tired of saying that these girls are a threat.

HATCHIE - STAY WITH ME [8.08] The album's called Keepsake, and it's one we might want to hang on to...
Ian Mathers: I don't care what the lyrics say when you look them up, in the moment of listening I cannot decide each time whether "Stay With Me" starts with "it's all better, now you're gone" or "it's no better". I don't think the song can decide either. It's far from the first song to have that sort of power, just like the drum machine-and-synth, loop-and-swoop approach, while beautiful here, isn't exactly new. But I've heard dozens of songs like this (some even by Hatchie) since the last time one made me feel the way "Stay With Me" is making me feel right now. And isn't that maybe the only true miracle of pop music: that mere human beings can make "just another song," one that on the surface isn't that different than a bunch of others we merely like, and yet it can hit us just as profoundly, as heartwrenchingly bittersweet, as hopefully, as this one is hitting me right now? I could write an essay about the things in my life "Stay With Me" connects up to, people and times and places and songs, but it wouldn't make much sense to anyone else even if it wasn't incredibly, tiresomely self indulgent. But the experience I've been having with "Stay With Me" is among other things a reminder of the worth of staying connected and engaged with the world, in art as in all things, and not just going back to listen to all the things I already love instead. The chances of any other given human being having this reaction to this particular song today ("if I met you in a different moment/if I met you would I be this broken?") are small, sure, maybe even tiny. But god, I hope we all get to keep having those moments, and that we recognize the wonder of them in each other. [10]
Katherine St Asaph: I know this was written as a deliberate experiment in writing a pop song (or so they say; I too have claimed my paychecks as experiments), and thus I know the exact places the mechanics are there to get you (unending wistful chords, the yearning "Everything Is Embarrassing" vocal, with an octave jump exactly where it needs to happen), and the places the mechanics clank a bit too loud (the ending sags before the [perfect] bridge; "I'm not done / I've come undone" is kind of circular, kind of on its own nose). It's also been out for months. But the second time I heard this song it just happened to catch me at the exact moment of flood of memory, of accreted stupid unrequited crushes and breakups and failures and regrets, until I was in tears in a cab, which is really the ideal setting to hear this song. [9]
Edward Okulicz: Oh god, this hits me so hard in my heart, it hurts. "Stay With Me" would have been incredible had it been sung by someone like Foxes as a glass-shattering EDM epic, and it would have been incredible done as a shoegaze number by an alternative universe Lush, but it's also perfect as it is, midway between those two extremes. The lyrics are simple, but they're no more complicated than they need to be. It's some heavy-duty yearning but at the same time it's as light as air. I want to go dancing somewhere this is playing and stare down at my sneakers all night. [10]
Ashley Bardhan: This feels like pretty straightforward dream pop. Super soupy, drowsy vocals over a synth loop. It's very fine, very reminiscent of making out with a 23-year-old mattress boy named DYLAN. [6]
Julian Axelrod: Hatchie's ability to craft grand, immersive synthscapes is impressive, rivaled only by her commitment to pushing semi-formed lyrical conceits past the four-minute mark. [6]
Will Adams: There's a heartbreaking circularity to the lyrics ("you're the one who's won"; "I'm not done/I've come undone") that nails the sense of uncontrollable spinning that comes from an unrequited love. The vacillation between confidence and doubt, the paper-thin façade of indifference, the endless what-ifs and agonizing of what could have been had the cards fallen differently: they all add up to a devastating crush song that, despite never resolving, nonetheless sounds like a massive, necessary release. [9]
Alex Clifton: Drenched in reverb, gorgeous synths and a lovely vocal line, and feels like a beautiful dream. It sounds like the end of a movie where there's a montage of the main characters heading off into the sunset, unsure of their futures but exchanging significant looks with one another. I hope this blows up, makes it big, becomes as iconic as it sounds -- everyone needs to hear this song. [8]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: With a sturdy and prominent drum loop, "Stay With Me" brings to mind My Bloody Valentine's "Soon" and the sped-up Zeppelin sample on Chapterhouse's "Pearl." The key difference is how Hatchie's vocals are always front and center, clear enough that each word can permeate every synth pad and twangy guitar line and snappy kick drum with a melange of hopeful desperation and knowing despair. That spacious, ever-comfortable void that her voice rests inside reveals itself to be a place of unnerving contemplation. Despite this, Hatchie convinces you that this purgatorial dream state is far more desirable than the living Hell that is life spent all alone. [9]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: The art of the fadeout is an intentionally obscure one. It's the art of making the encroachment of silence into an instrument of its own, of stretching a song's end into a beautiful eternity. "Stay With Me" has a gorgeous fade-out, ending in a heartbeat of a drumtrack as its shoe-gaze-leaning guitars depart, but it in itself feels like a fadeout, taking the dying hopes of some vaguely sketched relationship and letting them sprawl out before you. It takes a while to get going (it didn't click for me until the bridge), but it's the kind of song that deserves your patience. [7]
Alfred Soto: So THIS is the synth pop bauble that Chvrches have failed to write for six years? It stinks of the past, peeks through v-shaped fingers at the future, and in Hatchie's sweet lies ("It's so better now you're gone") an ever-present present. [8]
Joshua Copperman: The tedious, nearly bass-less first half of "Stay With Me" surprised me, especially as so many TSJ colleagues were raving about this song. The lyrics are concise without being cliché, the production is a mostly interesting mix of Madchester drums and modern dream-pop, but I'm left living someone else's nostalgia. Like Snail Mail and other, similar acts, I'm an outsider for not having the same childhood as every other music writer. That doesn't make this a bad song: Once the live drums and harmonies kick in at 2:51, it becomes difficult not to fall in love with the song. But even that is probably because it evokes my own nostalgia -- it sounds like "Wake Up," and not the "Wake Up" indie rockers used to reference. (A bit like this pre-"Radioactive" Imagine Dragons song too, which I loved when I was 15.) And I still remain locked out; the YouTube comments claim that "listening to this song feels like being in a club on ecstasy in the 90's." But really, this feels like hearing someone else remember that oft-reminisced-upon time period, reminding me once more that things were apparently better before I got here. [6]
Vikram Joseph: From sixth form through much of my twenties, I thought I didn't really like dancing; far too late, I realised I just hated having to fake it in bleak, sticky-floored provincial or university clubs, damp with straight machismo and broken dreams. These days, I can lose my shit to "Dancing On My Own" and "Make Me Feel" in queer spaces I feel safe and happy in, and that's wonderful. It stings, though, to have missed out on a kind of transcendence I feel like I should have experienced on the cusp of adulthood, and "Stay With Me" speaks directly, powerfully to that part of me. Those "Born Slippy" synths feel soft-focus and hazy like inebriated happiness itself; Hatchie's vocals in the middle eight feel like they're grasping for something intangible and impossible, chasing every lost night and doomed love into the first glow of sunrise. This is slow-motion, tear-streaked disco-ball euphoria to remind you of nights you're not quite sure belong to you or to cinema; a fever-dream summer dance anthem that makes me believe that the perfect places we have always aspired to are eminently real, flickering in spaces that our younger selves could never have imagined existed. [9]
Iris Xie: When I review songs, I repeat them in order to sink in their atmosphere and be flooded into their sentiments, because otherwise, it doesn't come clear to me. In this discovery process, I often find myself compelled to sing and ad lib along. For "Stay With Me," at 2:50, I found myself unconsciously singing the bridge when the midpoint of the kicks off into the instrumental, specifically these two lines: "If I met you in a different moment/If I met you, would I be this broken?" I kept singing these two lines over and over again as each repeat occurs, and then I realized that the bridge is the verbal personification of the instrumental, and it is the underlying sentiment that drives all the stark, urgent confessions, so naked in their desperation and knowing that it is futile and they won't be heard, but nevertheless, they must be said. This stands in contrast with the first two lines, which put on such a brave face that contains a bitter heart: "It's all better now you're gone/It's all better on my own." When you sing these lyrics over each other, the synths are so lively and comforting in this melancholy and blend together with warm guitar strums, and solid drums to illuminate these sentiments. Hatchie is in pain from having to deal with such a broken void, and the vibrant singing of the bridge contrasts with the reluctant, forlorn sentiment of the initial verse, so it actually reads: "It's all better now you're gone/If I met you in a different moment/If I met you would I be this broken/It's all better on my own." Even though Hatchie acknowledges it feels wrong, saying "stay with me" is the balm that she settles on to ease this pain of her lover's departure because she's responsible for this pain. The beautiful part about the instrumental is that it reminds me of why music, and art overall, is so deeply important: when one is able to access the space of these heartfelt emotions, and to use the tools at your disposal to create the specific weight and textures of those experiences, it also can help give shape to those who are also feeling these certain ways, and allowing them to release and transmit it. I've shied away from my own private embarrassment and shame about this exact situation for years, and have only recently started talking about it with my therapist and supportive friends, but yesterday, I allowed myself to look through old journals and communications about that relationship. In reality, I never allowed myself to feel comfortable with the endless weight of these emotions and regrets, for I never wanted to be haphazard about the textures of this experience, even in making art about it. I feared it'd only sour the reality and aggravate my anxieties about people not taking the level of pain I had seriously and mocking it. Putting myself in that impossible situation for not wanting to mar those moments, I shut it down for the past few years. But I've had to let those similar feelings wash over me in the past few months to create art and even give justice to the reviews that I want to give on TSJ and elsewhere, so now I have to acknowledge that buried sadness. I no longer feel shame about that plaintive way to express my emotions about those situations, for this song's fuzzy, warm haze of disorientation is so familiar, and now I trust myself to just go, which is what I did with this review today. I guess that's one reason why pop is so lovely -- a salve for private hearts, not ready to debut, until they are. It's clear now. [8]
