once again… thinking thoughts of time travel au but it’s like. different periods/eras/aus after each traversal…

like one moment you (or the character, depending on which pov) are in the “canon”-verse and wake up the next moment in a european royalty era. you shakily try and adapt to the lifestyle you now occupy. many of the faces you see are familar to you, and yet they’re not the people you remember them to be. some are far colder than you remember, others are much more cordial than the versions you know of, and some seem to be the same on the surface.

and then you see him, and the world blurs and spirals and slips out of your control, the last thing you see being an outstretched hand.

you wake up to a new environment, one filled to the brim with futuristic modern technology and sky-high buildings and hovering vehicles. it’s a little overwhelming but, much like with the previous world you just barely left, you manage to find some ground to adapt on. it’s the same process; everyone is familiar but different, and you’ve never felt more like a stranger.

you see him once more, a glimpse of him speeding towards your general vicinity with deep-set eyes honed in on your direction. this time you manage to stay lucid for a little longer — a day or two more — but it is more than enough when stops in front of you, your name uttered with a confused familiarity. as it turns out, this version has dreamed of you; he has dreamed of you to the point of knowing things a stranger would not be privy to, but of things the he of the original world (of your world) would only know of.

you get to know him over the course of two days before it strikes once more. the world spins and blurs and sends you tumbling into the abyss. while the last thing you see yet again is an outstetched arm, the frantic call of your name is but a lingering whisper echoing amidst the chaos.

and then you get transported to another era. and then another. and another. and another. and… another.

each one lasts a bit longer after your fateful meeting, but you’ve begun to grow numb from the repetitive motions, from the forgetting to remembering. the hope to return back to your timeline slowly diminishes with each new world, with each new do-over you wish to be rid of, with each variation of him that grows more obsessive at the prospect of you leaving, for he has witnessed it aplenty through these wretched dreams of you disappearing while he is left to chase after your ghost again, and again, and again.

rewatching aypierres final days of purgatory is so interesting because I know it wasn't something he originally planned but ayrobot taking over in a bloodbath like that was honestly the best way to introduce him. just like. the entire second to last day ayro and tubbo are in a call together and it's so clear from ayro tones he doesn't care about anything tubbo is saying, he thinks any theory is useless and any hesitation is weakness but he still has to 'act right' so you get a bunch of moments where you can hear ayro rolling his eyes with each sentence. genuinely wild. but yeah tubbo you're so right, I've never thought about it like that, you've cracked the code, now help me kill our friends.

this was going to be like a mile long essay but i just realized the most concise way to say it is that "it feels like a retcon that blitz has been so resentful and hostile towards fizz all this time since he was supposed to feel guilty" is simply not a good criticism when we have been shown, time and time again, that blitz's number one defense mechanism when he feels guilty or judged or attacked is to lash out, to deflect and ignore all his responsibility, and to shift the blame to someone else. that's like. his defining character flaw

i think honestly what irritates me about yoshidas work SO much is that people will tell you that banana fish is THE gay manga (ignoring the many things that came before it and were more groundbreaking, ie MW literally having on screen (or like. on panel but still.) gay sex in it and that came out like a decade before BF did) when there really isn't barely any gay rep outside of the pedophiles and the one time ash drops the f slur. like im sorry but somehow yasha, a work she wrote in 1996, has more gay rep in it but also has the same issues.

i truly do not get how people can enjoy banana fish with the rampant racism every 2 pages or the rampant sexual assault plotlines (on women and ash bc he is just... written like how yoshida writes women lmao) that are handled IMPOSSIBLY bad and sincerely i hoped yasha would be better because it had been like a decade or so between works. and then it proceeds to continue with the heres our blonde genius protagonist who everyone is weird as fuck to and will sexually harrass and everyone finds it a VERY funny joke to point out how feminine he is when theres barely any women in the work (if you exclude the ones that are being raped/killed/creepy to minors. which to be fair yasha has toned down the sa a LOT) and that its funny that hes kind of gay except not really!! and its just absurd to me how it just persists in all of her stuff because she is not an author that handles gay stuff well. like the scene in banana fish where ash is completely ok getting gang raped and did it solely to get into the hospital when its been SHOWN that he has a lot of trauma with that. and then right after his friend makes a joke at ash's expense about that. like sincerely and genuinely is this what we are hyping up as the old retro gay manga. go read some tezuka and stop reading shit that the most the main characters do is share a kiss in a nonromantic sense and is obsessed w making every gay person be evil!!
