i feel like a point that’s getting misinterpreted in danys (@hanschhen ) post but also a deeply important one to not misunderstand is the one about angst in fiction not having any deeper meaning. obviously real traumatizing things that happen to people in real life don’t happen for a reason and i think it’s a deeply dangerous belief to think that someone experiences trauma because of some cosmic force trying to teach them a lesson.

the issue in fiction gets kind of sticky because characters don’t have their own free will and whatever happens to them is a decision made by an outer force with outside motivations for those choices, and i think everyone can think of pieces of media where the plot includes darker and darker content for either the sake of shock value or because people believe that dark/upsetting events are somehow elevating the plot or are more intelligent and meaningful than having happy endings

i don’t personally like it either way for reasons that this post isn’t about and i couldn’t articulate regardless but i don’t think it’s inherently wrong to include a male character (ernst or anyone else) in the girl’s side of the dark i know well to convey the way male survivors of sexual abuse are often ignored and to represent those people, but danys point in her post was about that fact also being presented in conjunction with hanschen behaving in a way that we both feel uneasy with and it leaves the scene with an opening to interpret it as someone who has been taken advantage of in the past being taken advantage of again

is it an unrealistic scenario? not necessarily. the whole idea of the play and the musical is a frank (ha ha) look at the grim reality of these children’s lives and it doesn’t pull the punches with what is and isn’t “acceptable” to portray, and certainly things like that happen to people, but with those characters in particular it just doesn’t settle right with me for them to be presented in a way that isn’t. really in line with their characters in the source material. maybe it’s overly optimistic to say ernst and hanschen had a “happy” end, and hanschen says directly that it’s likely that in the future they’ll have to conform to expectations, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be happy in the moment, and eventually look back on it as a beautiful memory. it’s an ambiguously pleasant end in a play that doesn’t have many of them, written at a time where it was extremely radical to have a gay couple exist at all, let alone exist in a state of happiness where they aren’t ignorant about their reality but aren’t hindering themselves by it. i feel like giving it dark undertones in whatever way shoots that message in the foot and backpedals on something that is very meaningful just by virtue of its simplicity in the source material.

the point of this post is kind of getting away from me lol but i just feel that it’s an important distinction to say that bad things don’t happen to people to teach them lessons, but bad things in fiction included for seemingly no purpose other than to make it sadder at some point becomes either oddly voyeuristic to someone’s pain or an attempt to outsmart the source material by adding a deeper, tragic level to it that in turn unravels the things that made the source material so meaningful.

i know the portrayal of hernst is a topic a lot of people feel strongly about (of course. myself and dany included. we are also gay people who care about being represented not as jokes) and everyone has differing opinions about how it should be or how it is, but that’s just my thoughts on it and i didn’t want people misunderstanding what dany was saying about why that particular thing in dwsa makes her uncomfortable

after taking in the trailer for a bit (censoring names so they don’t show up in tags, this is just my thoughts re: the already controversial line and it is not an invitation for discourse)

i get the nagging suspicion that the sudden, never-before-even-implied route they’ve apparently swerved onto re: deciding that s*ra and r*xas are brothers as well as v*ntus and v*nitas (and presumably k*iri and n*mine and potentially x*on) is solely for the sake of killing off the pairings.

the v*nitas line is a big one, but the ice cream scene that has h*ro talking about his dead brother still being with them in spirit leading to s*ra thinking about r*xas indicates they’re gonna go that route suddenly. that’s assuming that the v*nitas line isn’t being taken out of context and really does refer to himself and v*n, of course, but with the s*ra scene in mind it seems possible that this is where they’re steering things. so while the rest of this post is about that possibility, i absolutely am not saying it’s the only one.

but if they’re really going to suddenly push the idea that these characters are literally siblings, i’m suspicious as hell at the reasoning.

normally i’d be incredibly wary of anyone needing to protest that a ship isn’t incest, and this isn’t to say “you can’t be uncomfortable with it”, but in my eyes they just don’t fit the criteria.

they’re not genetically related - presumably s*ra and v*nitas are as well as v*ntus and r*xas, but not the other combinations. v*nitas’s appearance is explicitly because of s*ra and likewise with r*xas and v*n. k*iri and n*mine are a little stickier in that we don’t know why n*mine doesn’t look like k*iri, only vague theories that it has to do with v*n as well. this is enough to kill a claim that something’s incest in some peoples’ eyes, but i and many others believe that adopted siblings dating each other is still incestuous even if they’re not biologically related.

but they aren’t adopted siblings. they weren’t raised together. there’s no socialization aspect in play. the only way you could actually argue it’s incestuous is that they would technically have the same (never seen bc this is kh) parents, but that’s because they were originally the same person. we can’t compare it to reality bc, you know, humans do not normally survive being split in half nearly long enough to question if the two halves getting together would be incestuous. there is no real-life equivalent to what these characters’ actual relationships to one another are, but i do not buy “siblings”.

in no way do they actually fill sibling roles towards each other - they’re not biologically related, they’re not socialized as siblings, the series so far has not once come close to indicating that they should be considered siblings. they’re brothers as much as s*ra and r*ku are, which is to say, they’re not. but if they are making this reach, i think that’s where the reasoning comes in - they realized that fans were viewing the dynamics between s*ra + r*xas and v*ntus + v*nitas as being tinged with homoeroticism and want to put an end to it.

they can’t kill s*riku. it is too powerful to be stopped. but they can staunch these gay ships if they force the idea that they’re family hard enough.
