I think the thing that kills me the most about ep6 of arcane is that in vander's memories, it's mostly focused on Vi

yeah there's powder and the others in there, but it's still mainly vi

and in a show that almost revolves around jinx and her actions (she's absolutely main character), it's refreshing to see the spotlight on her big sister and how she got to where she is and if im biased as an older sister who gets overlooked for the younger ones then sue me

I'm trying really hard not to just be The Complainer because that's an energy I don't want to bring here when I love (present tense; I rewatch it like 5 times a day) arcane season 1 so much but does anyone remember when powder was taken in by silco and being raised by this very utilitarian merciless 'the ends justify the means' type character made jinx turn out violent and merciless as well. and vi was horrified by her and the lanes were terrified of her and piltover was falling over itself trying to scapegoat her as the one bad apple of the undercity to kid themselves into believing that everyone else was perfectly fine with being treated as less than. and that contrasts vi after vander etc. died because she was raised by him and internalised the idea that no one wins in war and fighting back against systemic oppression isn't worth the damage it causes to your own community which is why she ended up working with cait and the council like vander worked with grayson. the people who raised them shaped them into who they are today but then in season 2 jinx has a daughter and she's suddenly completely normal and well adjusted and her attachment style isn't digging her nails in until she draws blood at all. like What. what happened. didn't things used to mean something

realising that in the alt timeline there's no hextech bec vi died, but also because jayce likely went through with jumping off that ledge because viktor never stopped him there. and jayvik's bond never develops because again viktor never stops jayce from jumping and vice versa jayce can never do the same for viktor.

realising that ekko and heimerdinger were sent to the alt timeline because they were both alive there. whereas jayce wasn't because in that world without hextech, he was most likely not alive. instead jayce was flung across time to the far future in a timeline where vi didn't die and he and viktor developed hextech, because only in this timeline is future viktor able to realise the consequence of what he'd done and thus kickstart the chain of events that would get jayce to help him destroy it and show current viktor the price he'd pay by pursuing perfection.

in a weird way it's almost relieving to know that even in this "ideal" alternative timeline where everyone seems so much happier and zaun a much better place to live, all of this good stuff came with its costs. losing vi (a necessity to show the cost of the hextech), a world without jayce (no development of hextech—either he successfully jumped, gave up on his plans, or imprisoned after the accident), and possibly a viktor whose life would be shorter (but then again maybe not, because no jinx, no attack). plus jayce and viktor's bond would never develop in this timeline, and they would never be able to save each other there.

which is why jayce was sent to the post-evolution wasteland future instead. because in that timeline he stayed alive to develop the hextech that would go onto be used for machine herald viktor's evolution et cetera. it's crazy how intertwined jayvik's lives are, across timelines, across dimensions. future viktor giving child-jayce the key to stopping the evolution, jayce who would grow up to meet viktor, viktor who would stop jayce from jumping off the ledge, jayce who would stop viktor from doing the same, both necessities to keep pursuing their work, thus leading into machine herald viktor, with jayce being the only person in any possible world who could stop him.

in some strange way it almost makes it easier to stomach that the main timeline (the timeline in which the events of arcane takes place) is so flawed and fucked up, because even that seemingly much happier, more peaceful world came with a very heavy price.

i know so many people are gonna disagree with me but ive never been in the arcane fandom til, like, 3 hours ago, and im lowkey baffled by the fact that people are mad and surprised jinx died and are acting like it makes no sense like. not to be "i saw it coming", but narratively, she was dead from the beginning. There was no universe in which both vi and jinx survived, and they weren't going to kill off vi. jinx's death makes a lot of sense, do i wish it hadnt happened? YEAH I LOVE HER, but from a writing perspective, it was the right way to go. The whole point is that you sometimes can't save someone. A lot of the time, you can't save them. Jinx's entire arc was about her piecing herself and her family (vi) back together. She had to struggle, she had to do unspeakably evil things, she had to find her Dad again and find her sister again and she had to finally, at last, be the hero everyone wanted her to be. And she got her Dad. And she got her sister. And she was ready for a better life. And she died anyway. She died anyway, because sometimes it just isn't fair. Sometimes, no matter how much someone deserves a happy ending, they still don't get it. people have been in this fandom for years, and I literally watched episode one a few days ago. This is new to me. maybe my mind would have been changed if I'd been fixated on this for awhile, and I get that, but with completely fresh eyes, it makes a painful amount of sense. It's absolutely tragic. But it makes sense.

Happy Sugar Life Thoughts;

- I love how Satou is often displayed with Pink and Red. Similar colors that are just different tones. Pink is a tone of red. And with symbolism, pink can often symbolize love and innocence. It’s a soft color. On the other hand, red is a bright color for danger and violence. And yet they’re so closely tight together and so easily shifted to another and can be mistaken for the other when mixed together. Like seeing a mixed color car and asking “is that green or blue?” And with that, those two colors for Satou are so key to her character. It’s the differentiation between love and abuse. And it’s one people often confuse. Such as a parent hurting or even abusing their child because “they love them,” or a victim assuming the person hurting them must be love. That the hurt being caused onto to them is okay and “how they (the abuser) shows love.” And that inability to differentiate shows through Satou’s life. With how she is abused and asks “is this love? Is this love?” And then her finding Shio and how she treats Shio.

- Ever think about how Satou’s birthday is the end of the year and Shio’s is the beginning. Just goes into the themes of Satou the continuation/cycle of abuse. Satou abused Shio (continuing the cycle, being abused by her aunt) and the cycle continuing through Shio. It’s a new year, and a new life to the generational cycle. But also how the year end, but Shio continues with Satou’s memory. The continuation of “their love.”

- Some people ask why Shio’s name means Salt. Think of this: What they got out of the relationship. Satou got sugar. She got happiness, meaning, “love.” And Shio got salt. She got traumatized. Also Sugar and Salt don’t mix well together, showing their dynamic and how the two are basically broken glass trying to fit together to fix and rebuild the mirror (why i call them acute glass.) But the pieces are so broken they dont work anymore. And the pieces you try to slam together dont fit. Satou and Shio are two traumatized individuals staying together because they’re both broken and have such a co-dependent relationship they don’t know how to function without the other. But in the end, they do not fit. Sugar and Salt just do not work together. The broken glass will not reform a mirror. And in the end, their relationship will just lead to abuse.
