ID 3: A reply by @reblog-house: its just hit me why the phrase "how did they whitewash white people" works. It works because americanisation isnt noticed for what it is and it's instead just described as whitewashing. This is someone taking non-american white characters and making them fit the pinnacle of _american_ whiteness, stripping them of their culture just to fit american subcultures and fashions. It _feels_ like whitewashing because it rids them of their culture and heritage to fit american molds.
ID 4: Screenshot of tags reading: #^This #really it's fascinating and a bit unsettling how American assimilation means cultural erasure #so much distinctiveness gets lost #which i think is important to point out when talking about 'whiteness' #especially when certain people invoke 'white culture' or 'white history' #since there is literally no such thing #and they know it - it's why they try to be sound smarter and say things like 'western culture' #rather than what they really mean #which is a very certain type of white upper-middle class protestant #Whiteness is a political label that can arbitrarily be applied or revoked to a person or group of people #I can for sure tell you there is a nasty undercurrent of old-world racism that is still persistent even today in America #such as against citizens of Italian - Russian - Polish or Irish descent #all people who were traditionally poor peasant immigrants who practiced a type of Christianity that wasn't protestant #i.e. catholic and Orthodox #(denominations that are to this day considered in evangelical Christianity as "false" faiths - the "wrong" kind of christian) #we are really not that many steps removed from the ethnic and classist European racism of our grandparents #and ir world be so so easily for those in power to change the rules again - in order the shrink the circle of privilege #and its material benefits to fewer people #Race #Whiteness #Americanism #American Identity #Assimilation #Conformity #Cultural Erasure #Frozen

Dialtown is the most USA-core game I've ever played. It's so fucking American that it's scary, and I've lived there my entire life! Like, this feels fundamentally tied with the game's themes and narrative, that's how extreme it is. And it's not even alienating OR nationalist?? It makes such genuine commentary? And then there's so much other shit to think about too; Dialtown has a very real identity outside this that anyone could love?
One: I am VERY impressed that you have done the USA and its people this well. I am actually astounded, bewildered, and chuffed. I've never felt so seen by a video game, culturally-speaking. I didn't even know there was a culture to see.
Two: WHY did you do that. Dialtown is like USA Culture Absurdified: The Visual Novel. What drove you to make a game this rich with American culture and ideas???
Hello!
It would've been odd for an outsider (non American) who enjoys reading up on history to make my setting nationalist or alienating. America is a country with a lot of serious issues. You can't really study how America is (and has been) internally run without facing glaring and obvious systematic issues. DT's setting is one of scarcity and most of the main characters you follow in DT are kinda just scraping by without much hope for true mobility/advancement. A lot of Americans (especially younger generations) would agree this sorta encapsulates the national mood of the country right now.
Of course, the systems that run a country don't define its citizens - many of the finest people I've ever known are American and are victims of the whims of those with power, not willing participants in this system. I could be wrong, but that's why I think the setting connected with a lot of people. We all know Randys, Olivers + Karens, people who've fallen through the cracks in some way. To them, America's spirit of self-determination isn't about individual identity - it's more "you're on your own."
Why I chose to set DT in America would be a novel length answer in of itself, but it mainly came down to history + narrative opportunity. I wanted to set the game in the epicenter of where the phone-revolution came from and Crown likely couldn't have pulled his plan off anywhere else and probably not during any other time. It had to be 1960's America.
Of course, some parts of DT are sorta universal and were inspired by the the Great Recession and what followed. I remember there was an area not that far from my house that was full of green fields when I was born and when I was a kid (and when real estate boomed), stuff started being built there. Parts of it looked really nice, not quite like anything nearby. Like the future was coming. Then the economy crashed and stuff was left sitting there, half-built for like a decade. Skeletal, unfinished buildings. DT is much the same.
There's a feeling that the city could've been something better and while things could be more equal, it does feel like there are no easy solutions to fix everything - unless someone very smart and determined somehow bypassed every safeguard that was set up to halt radical change and enacted a genius plan to somehow eliminate scarcity. It happened once and might never again.
I don't think most people understand the intricacies of stuff like global commerce all that well (myself included), but when you're sitting looking at a half built neighbourhood mere hours after speaking to a friend who just kicked out of rented accommodation and doesn't have a stable family unit to fall back on, you'd have to be a real dolt not to understand that things aren't great right now. Most people are scraping by and feel if they could just get affordable housing locked down, if they had maybe one good opportunity - maybe there's hope that things could change for the better.
The end of DT isn't really utopian, things don't massively change for the better and indeed, the town has a lot of rebuilding to do. But, a collection of lonely people are now looking out for each other and through the relationships they have, now feel like they have a place in this world. That no matter how bad things really get - they aren't truly by themselves anymore. Most individuals don't have the means to significantly advance change on their own - but you can live your life, love those around you and support others and plan for when the opportunity to affect change comes about.
I guess that's what life is, in America or anywhere else. Sorry I rambled for so long. Hope this answered the question!

dysgraphic artiÆšts risÉ UP!!!!!
#raise your pencils!!!! and erasers. to fix the backwards letters đ#sorry still thinking about my weirdness with my art professors. yknow a lot of em have been really pushing us as#students to make our personal identities a major part of like our 'brand' as artists#which. well from an art history major perspective thats a very contentious and nuanced topic. i love a lot of artists who live this way#and i think its great seeing my peers who focus on identity thrive. but also as an fine arts major (double major fool LOL)#i keep getting pushed by teachers into like. specific '____ artist' identities???#specificaly woman artist. which is a little bizarre because im a bit fat and a bit gnc so im generally like. ungendered? in day-to-day life#(which doesnt actually matter to me directly that much honestly LOL people tend to view me as like. buddy? buddy or pal.)#(not man. not woman. not anything human. sometimes i remind people of a beloved dog. which. hkdsahjk thats its own can of worms)#(a can of worms that also doesnt matter much to me directly because im a wannabe furry who chose to be the dog when playing house as a kid)#(LOL so um. well. theres that) but yeah i dunno i dont really consider myself a woman artist. its been. shockingly (and sometimes luckily?)#irrelevant to most of my life and experiences and art (although dont get me wrong misogyny is very real and very present) so i dont#have a whole lot to say about it from an art perspective. you could also call me all kinds of things. a queer artist. a mixed race artist#again technically correct. some aspects more visible in my work than others. but also very technical. i focus on race a lot in in my#art historical work but i dunno how much my drawings have to say. except that i keep making too many mixed ocs LOL#i dunno i just think my professors gotta focus that energy away from tokenizing me and over to supporting like actual#capital W Woman artists capital Q Queer artists capital A Artists of Colour who are doing far more interesting things than I#far more thought out and engaged in these topics directly. i just kind of stumble into my art blindly and confused <3#sorry that was a long tangent WHAT IM SAYING Is despite all that: i do consider myself a capital D Dysgraphic artist#i think its an unmovable constant of my art and the way i draw and the way my hands move. the untrained eye doesnt seem to be as aware#of it directly. but those who are familiar can probably see it. the dysgraphia LOL if not just from whenever i write a letter or number#half of them are busted and frantically fixed HDKJSDJDS but its in all my art. if u can see it <3 ive been trying to embrace it#dygraphic artists raise your pencils indeed!! and throw away the eraser!!! make the legibility of your words everyone elses problem!!!#what does that say? what is that sketch? none of my business! none of your business!! its the business of my hand and the pencil alone#motor skill and spatial issues take the wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel

OP said they're open to rants so here you go:
I am preparing a 4-week course on Jewish diaspora history rn and its actually crazy how /much/ there is. There are thousands of years of history, across 6 continents and innumerable distinct communities. Squeezing it into 4 sessions is a task, let me tell you. This is less of a history class and more of a amusebouche of diaspora migrations and philosophical discussions about Jewish identity. Ideally, they will leave the course knowing enough to go research more about whatever specific topics they're interested in, but I'm giving them much less specific details than I would in a 1:1 conversation because I want to emphasize broad concepts and themes in Jewish history.
But what really excites me is the variety of activities I'm preparing for this class. I don't want it to just be a lecture, or a bunch of readings. I want it to be a variety of modalities and learning methods, so we've got videos, me yapping, chevruta study, chavura study, group discussions, games, and model UN-style debates. This is a whirlwind of a course! If money were no object, each session would last a full day and this could be a Beit Midrash Retreat at a hotel or something, but alas.
One of the discussions I have planned is looking at various arguments for and against counting different diaspora groups as Jewish (Karaite, Samaritan, Kaifeng, Beta Israel, and, to be a little spicy, Hasidim). What I'm hoping they'll get out of this is the understanding that "Judaism" might not have to mean "rabbinic/Talmudic Judaism," and also that the metrics by which we have included/excluded different groups are a little bit arbitrary and inconsistent.
I also have a model-UN style debate planned where they'll be assigned Reformer, Orthodoxy, or neo-Orthodoxy (to learn about the Reform-Orthodox split) and have to prepare a debate with each other about who's right.
In our last session, I'm going to lead us through a game where I show them on a powerpoint pictures of Jewish musicians/actors/politicians and they have to guess if each person is Ashke, Sfardi, or Mizrachi. The game is designed for them to get most of them wrong, so that we can open up the discussion about why people assume Ashke=white-looking, Sfardi=Latino-looking, Mizrachi=Arab-looking. Gal Gadot and Noah Shufutinsky are Ashkenazi, and David Guetta and Alona Tal are Sfardi. And, frankly, a lot of Mizrachi Jews I've met would completely blend in among my purebred Ashke family, because Jews are actually still very genetically close to each other.
I'm really hopeful that this 4 session cohort will be more accessible to people who don't normally go for these courses I teach, and that it gives them a broader understanding of the trajectory of the Jewish exilic era. They might not come to same conclusions about the Jewish future as me, but hopefully they'll have a better understanding of how we got to where we're at today. And hopefully they'll feel closer to their own Jewish heritage as well.
The most liminal feeling in judaism is knowing history that's deeply shaped jewish communities and yet... nobody but jews talk about it. Obviously, this isn't unique to judaism, but it's a very specific reminder that jewish history matters more to you than it does anyone else

Talking to my dad after listening to Unreal Unearth like
#like i know the reason is that he only ever spoke it in school and never learned it that well to begin with but like. really? not even a few#basic words?#idk ive been reflecting a lot on my cultural identity in the last few years and how my mom made sure to immerse us in her culture as much as#humanly possible and maintain that connection to her home and how it's a much bigger part of my identity than i realized#and on the other hand my dad did none of that and had no real interest in sharing that with us (not intentionally hes just emotionally#unavailable) so there's this whole side of my family and my history that I don't really feel connected to at all#like there have been a few times where someone in my dads family has asked me if i 'feel irish' and they always seem so sad when I have to#be like honestly not really. and its so sad to be basically completely cut off from that entire side of my family and myself especially when#i can compare it to the joy and connection i have in my moms side#like my dad is incapable of talking about a feeling and now all his children and anyone who comes after us will have zero connection to the#country they lived in for generations.#idk i just have some Feelings about this that unreal unearth brought back up#esp butchered tongue#thanks hozier#(seriously thank u 11/10 album)

i really want to see genderqueer be an identity we talk about in great detail this pride month. genderqueer saw more usage in the 90s and 2000s, with the rise of the term non binary we've seen more people gravitate toward that label as it becomes the more socially accepted term to use given its notoriety. i would like to bring back alternative labels for this experience, since our diversity is what makes us so unique and strong as a community
genderqueer is an identity that has a long history, and a myriad of definitions and folks who express it in different ways. it really can mean whatever the hell you want. it can mean that you're cisgender but express your gender in a queer way. it can mean that you're trans, take hormones, have gotten top and bottom surgery and dress however you want. it can mean that you dress "normal" and pass as cishet but have a queer gender on the inside. it can mean that you combine masculine and feminine aesthetics. it can mean that you strive for gender neutrality. it can mean that you want to be so ambiguously gendered strangers can't tell who you are.
there's no guidelines or rules, genderqueer is an identity meant to embrace the freedom one can have with gender expression. it can mean as much or as little as the person using it wants it to. it's a beautiful term that is just as flexible as non binary, and i do not postulate to replace that term, but rather bring light to another identity that may suit folks slightly better. it's a beautiful identity. it's what I came out as first in 2011 and I'm happy to be back at all these years later.
2024 is a great year to be proud of being genderqueer and to proudly tell people about this part of yourself. let's celebrate ourselves louder and prouder than ever before. there are many ways to exist outside of the binary, and folks deserve to know about older terms that have been used by the community as well as newer ones

FAN BEHAVIOR
characters: dick grayson, jason todd, tim drake summary: batboys with a celebrity! reader content/warnings: fem! reader, fluff
DICK GRAYSON
Youâre an actress who has had a meteoric rise, moving from doing small, one-off parts in TV shows to becoming a breakout star on a particularly popular series to being cast in major movie productions
Your stardom is still a little surreal to you and when youâre invited to a wayne enterprise charity gala, you contemplate not going â what business do you have being somewhere with people far more famous than you? But when you tell your agent this, she gives you a look that says youâre insane for even considering declining
Youâll forever be grateful that she urged you to do so because thatâs where you meet Dick
Heâs standing with Bruce Wayne, chatting with some frequent donors, dressed in a perfectly-tailored navy blue suit when he sees you out of the corner of his eye and he lights up. He approaches you first with that megawatt smile and introduces himself with an extended hand and says, âIâm a huge fan! Iâve been watching your stuff since you were in Legends of the Kingdom!â And the rest is history
Dick goes to every red carpet event you invite him to and he makes it a point to attend every private premiere screening and public opening night
He definitely shushes anyone who talks during your movies or TV shows and does not care if people think heâs obnoxious.
Youâre definitely the âit coupleâ and your faces are plastered constantly on magazine covers and two-page spreads
There are people who try to sow discord in your relationship and their go-to is either pointing out how different you are to Dickâs former girlfriends; that youâre not his type, that this isnât going to last, etc., or that youâre not talented enough for the fame you have or to be dating Dick Grayson
It definitely gets to you and does nothing to whatever lingering imposter syndrome you harbor but Dick is such a grounding force, reminding you that itâs all just noise and that he loves you completely and unconditionally
At home, he likes to rewind your scenes in shows and movies, and it flatters you as much as it flusters you
He also likes to read through scripts with you when he can and his voices for the various other characters bring you to tears from laughterÂ
So many intentional and unintentional thirst trap couples pics. Like, a selfie you post one morning â Dick is shirtless and youâre in one of his old t-shirts and its sliding down your shoulder and showing your collarbone and youâre both laying on your stomachs in your shared bed, hair sleep (and sex) tousled with the morning sun making both of you look like youâre golden and glowingÂ
JASON TODD
You meet Jason as Red Hood first when youâre running from the paparazzi but you donât know itâs him
They chase you down a couple of blocks before someone tugs you into an alleyway and youâre about to scream for help when you see who it is. Red Hood shields you as the paparazzi pass and when you ask him why he helped you, he simply says, âI hate the paps and you looked like you needed a hand.â
Once heâs sure the coast is clear, he walks you back to your hotel using the back alleys of Gotham. You make several attempts to strike a conversation up with him in the first few minutes of your walk but what seems to catch his interest is when you start rambling on about just finishing Dostoevskyâs Crime and Punishment.Â
Youâre disappointed when you arrive at your hotel and youâre rush inside to find a pad to scribble your number on but heâs gone when you return, disappearing into the night
Itâs by chance that you meet him again (unbeknownst to you), this time in his civilian identity as Jason Todd. Youâre in disguise at a bookstore in Gotham when you bump into him and spill his iced coffee all over both of you, apologizing profusely and offering to buy him another drink, which he accepts. (His voice is oddly familiar to you but you canât put your finger on why)Â
You two keep in touch and start dating privately. The long-distance is difficult at times given your very different and busy schedules and Jason is pretty cagey about what he does but you both make time for each other as much as possible
He tells you that he listens to your music during his workouts and in the background while heâs doing stuff around his apartment. He hums along too.
He recommends your songs to anyone who listens, which raises suspicions in the Batfam, and it obviously doesnât take long for them to figure out that heâs dating you but he makes them promise to keep it to themselves.Â
Whenever you have a concert in Gotham, which you make a point to do frequently, Jason is in the VIP box, bobbing his head and mouthing along to your songs. When it ends, heâs right there backstage with flowers and a thermos of tea for your throat
Your relationship goes public when fans capture of video of you two leaving one of your concerts together, Jasonâs leather jacket draped over your shoulders
You eventually move to Gotham to be closer to him and the two of you spend every free moment either of you have together, making up for lost time.Â
You still try to keep your relationship as private as possible but fans eat up any crumbs they get, including the occasional selfie of you bothÂ
He is your biggest inspiration for songs and also your biggest help. You love bouncing ideas off of him and he likes sitting with you when you pick at your guitar strings and mumble a half-formed melody
(You eventually do find out that heâs Red Hood when he tumbles through the window of your bedroom, bleeding profusely, and you have to take his helmet off to assess the damage)
TIM DRAKE
Youâve known Tim since you were kids given that your parents ran in the same social circles
You started out as a child model in department store clothing catalogs. Tim did some shoots with you too but while his parents eventually stopped auditioning him for such jobs, you continued until the present day, and youâre now a well-known supermodelÂ
You two have been friends forever and the internet laps up your interactions together. There are compilations of videos and photos of the two of you at banquets and red carpet events and memes with text like âwhen will someone look at me like that?â
Before you two even started dating, there were articles about a supposed romance and sexual tension between you two. In interviews, you would vehemently deny anything asked about it and reiterate that you two are just good friends
At some point, however, you start seeing your childhood friend in a different light. Heâs kind, brilliant, funny, attentive, and very handsome. Itâs not that you didnât know that before but itâs different now. You find yourself shying away his casual touches and suddenly conscious of your actions around him â did you laugh too loud? Is your hair in your face? Does he know how you feel? Can he tell?
You donât want to ruin your friendship, as cliche as it sounds, so you did your best to keep your feelings under wraps, which resulted in you distancing yourself. When Tim would text to congratulate you on your latest Vogue cover or runway show, you would simply shoot a simple âthanks!â text back instead of the usual âTHANK Uâ followed by five heart emojis.Â
He confronts you about it one day and youâve never really been a good liar in front of him so you tell him, bracing for a gentle rejection but instead receiving a kiss.Â
You made a hard launch post with him on Instagram and received hundreds of DMs of people saying they were vindicated in believing that âfriends donât look at each other like thatâ
Tim is in the front row at every single runway show you have, dressed impeccably in an expensive suit. He takes pictures of you and visits you backstage with your favorite sweet treat.
After fashion shows and other events, you return to his apartment to let your hair down and put your feet up. You do your skincare routines together, sheet face mask and all, and snuggle on the couch for some TV or just to hang out and talk endlessly
Youâre very active on social media with him and you two have a lot of couples posts together. When you both have time, you do Instagram lives where people watch you two make dinner together or answer some questions from viewers. A fan favorite is when you choose outfits for each other.
During a runway, you blow a kiss at Tim in the audience and the camera zooms in on his face, where he just watches you with a lovestruck expression and bright red ears â itâs in almost every video compilation thatâs titled something like â15 minutes of Tim Drake being a simpâ
