Okay so my biggest problems with how the Steve Saga base color steves were designed are that they don’t match and they aren’t as vibrant as I’d like, sometimes even looking kinda muddy. Green and Yellow especially.

So I’ve redesigned all 5 to ease my brain, and will be adding descriptions of how I’d change them lore-wise (excuse me if the ideas seem jumbled, I’m not very good at compiling my thoughts coherently)

First there’s Red Steves

In terms of design I basically just brightened it up and made it shinier

The original lore had them be incredibly dumb. While it’s a fun gag, I would prefer if they were closer to average

So in my idea of a streamlined Red Steve, they’d still be pyrokinetic with anger issues, but they wouldn’t be boneheads. The original had them using redstone as a power source, but it was never really explained, so to expand on that, their ability to create fire demands they consume mass amounts of fuel to function. So lots of food and burnable items can help them. Alternatively, redstone blocks contain a similar level of energy that they will feed on to fuel themselves more efficiently.

Next Blue Steves

Honestly the best of the original designs. Once again, basically just brightened it up and made it shinier to match the more overhauled ones.

So, these guys are hydrokinetic as well as the smartest, strongest, and wisest of the 5. Not much I want to change there. I do want to add on to them that they have a level of hubris comparable to the SCU Red Steves, which does lead some to less than desirable fates

Now the first majorly changed design, Green Steves

The original green steve design always bothered me because it was the most different from the other base colors. In short, it’s just way too bright. The green just doesn’t really pop. So I actually darkened it a bit so that it matches the other colors better.

We never really learned much about the green steves in the steve saga. From what I know, they were all fairly timid and pretty weak.

Obviously I’d like to at least tweak that. So my ideal version would have them be Chlorokinetic, meaning they can create and control plants. I feel this could give them a bit more character by having them be more connected to nature.

Now for my personal favorite of the redesigns, Yellow Steves why doesn’t tumblr have a yellow text option 😭

My gripes with the Steve Saga design are that it has a lot more contrast than the others, has weirdly colored highlights, and is just a sickly shade of yellow. So I fixed the contrast and highlights up and made it a more golden yellow

These guys were known for being electrokinetic speedsters in the original. Honestly I like that about them, don’t really wanna change anything there. I do think it’d be interesting to make them drawn to metals because conducting electricity, and weak to resisters like wood since electricity can’t flow through stuff like that. They’re the only ones who actually fight using lighting. The other 4 will at most have lightning while using their own abilities, but won’t be able to use that lightning for actual combat

Lastly, we have Purple Steves

So the original was missing some highlights, and I didn’t really like the shade of purple. Pretty easy fixes

The power these guys were known for was being able to teleport basically anywhere at will. Pretty cool power, not gonna change it.

Personality-wise we only saw one in the series and he was brain damaged for most of it. I think a good general trait for them is that they don’t like staying in on place for long, both because they lack any real attacking abilities and they just instinctively want to teleport to new places as a means of avoiding people who’d want to harm them.

Lmk your thoughts and what you think I could do differently with the ideas or if you have your own that you think could be cool to add. I will be keeping an eye out and will add anything that I like (with credit obviously). I have some more complex thoughts for the upcoming prominent steves so keep an eye out for that.

i woke up in a cold sweat with this cursed AU for MCSM. this is my contribution as a paleontology nerd, i’m so sorry in advance

stupid AU where everything is the same, but everyone is a raptor of some kind. i am such a nerd that i legitimately put thought into what type of dinosaur each character would be and why, and i’ll give explanations for each one. this was stupid and really rushed, but it was so much fun to do, and i hope you all enjoy???

let’s start with Jesse, who was the second easiest choice behind Axel; they are a speculative smaller subspecies of Deinonychus antirrhopus.

Deinonychus was one of the most important discoveries in paleontology, and would give rise to what is known as “the Dinosaur Renaissance”, which sparked how we see dinosaurs today. this was because of it’s clear appearance as an agile, active predator (which is not how dinosaurs were seen at the time of its discovery), and later, it’s striking resemblance to the feathered, gliding dinosaur Archaeopteryx. Deinonychus even modeled how the “Velociraptors” looked in Jurassic Park! however, the issue lies in the fact that Deinonychus was a medium-sized raptor, and Jesse… well, they’re not very tall. i really wanted to use Deinonychus, but the size wasn’t right, so i settled for a speculative, smaller subspecies. Deinonychus is also speculated to be a pack hunter, which would definitely work in Jesse’s favor. also i think it’s funny; Deinonychus antirrhopus means “counterbalanced terrible claw”, and i find that to be the most ironic thing for Jesse, given how clumsy they are. i love it.

next, Axel! he was the EASIEST choice by far; he is a Utahraptor ostrommaysorum.

you probably already know Utahraptor; it’s the largest and most heavily built of all raptors, often growing just over 6 ft tall at the hips. Axel is also very tall and heavily built, so that immediately clicks. but adding on to this, in contrast with other raptors, Utahraptor was likely more of an ambushing raptor rather than a pursuit raptor, and that clicks with Axel hating running and relying on more aggressive and explosive tactics, so to speak. and finally, the most funny detail; if you’ll notice, the Utahraptor’s lower jaw juts out slightly and curves away from the upper jaw. this was probably to gain a better grip on prey, but it does give them a very strange look even when their mouth is closed. it makes that comment that Lukas made about Axel being a mouth breather even funnier, at least to me.

Olivia! i had a little bit of trouble with her, but i think i settled on a good one; she is a Dromaeosaurus albertensis.

Dromaeosaurus was a shier, smaller raptor that lived up north in what is now Canada, enduring freezing polar winters and months of total darkness. it’d take a lot of brains to be able to pull strings to survive that, which Olivia certainly provides. Dromaeosaurus also relied more on the chase and brain power, rather than brute force, though they would’ve if needed be. recent studies also show that raptors probably had very similar capabilities to modern birds, so if they had a brain kind of like corvids, they could’ve even used primitive tools at times. comes in handy with redstone, eh? Dromaeosaurus was also a good tracker, thanks to its sensitive nose and sharp eyes. also, they’re very important but often overlooked. Dromaeosaurus was the leading dinosaur for the names of all under the “raptor” umbrella; the dromaeosaurids.

Petra! she’s my favorite character, i’ll just admit that lmao. but i gave her the same treatment as everyone else here, so; she is an Austroraptor cabazai.

Austroraptor was a tall, lean, and quick raptor which inhabited the warm swamps of South America. obviously, Petra is the second tallest in The New Order, and Austroraptor was the second tallest raptor on record, so that checks out. but i think the build of Austroraptor checks out too; it’s moderately built, both for speed and strength, with the classic claw. it was very slender and judging from their leg bones, could be a very good pursuit raptor that could also maintain speeds for extended periods of time, which matches Petra’s love to race and run. what sets Austroraptor apart, however, is it’s diet; it was speculated to be at least partially piscivorous, meaning it ate a lot of fish. it’s teeth were slightly conical and acted almost like hooks, which would be quite painful to an opponent. Austroraptor was pretty good at it’s niche, but it wasn’t afraid to go elsewhere if needed. And Petra loves to go elsewhere.

Lukas! he was a little tricky for me to figure out, i’m not gonna lie. i was stuck between these two: Velociraptor mongoliensis and Saurornitholestes langstoni. but i had to choose only one, and i ultimately had to go with a speculative larger subspecies of Velociraptor, since i already broke the size rule with Jesse.

Velociraptor is the most widely known, famous, and beloved raptor of all time, and obviously a fan favorite, so that already checks a box. but adding to this, Velociraptor is a very well-documented dinosaur with some incredible specimens. Velociraptors were also likely to be stealthy and tenacious hunters who used their brains, speed, and ability to take a tumble (which Lukas does a LOT) to their advantage. Lukas is also confirmed in game to be attractive (which is still so funny to me), so i added all kinds of cool looking display feathers in a blue color, because 1) his text and eyes are a blueish color and 2) blue is a kinda rare color in nature, and a lot of birds today seem to like the it. also, in episode 7, remember how his nose wasn’t right in the portrait? i kind of like to imagine that Cassie heard that he was a Velociraptor and assumed he was the Jurassic Park version? so Lukas just comes in, sees the portrait, and is like “where tf are my feathers”

last but not least; Rueben! i had some trouble picking out a genus and species, but i knew immediately that he had to be a small ceratopsian. i chose for him, Microceratus gobiensis.

Microceratus is an adorable looking ceratopsian that was only about the size of a very small dog. but don’t let it’s appearance fool you. ceratopsians have some of the biggest characters and presences in paleontology, with the audacity to match. Rueben definitely has character, personality, and audaciousness. don’t get me wrong, they would probably rather not fight (at least some of them. can’t say the same for Triceratops), but they sure would’ve if they had to. Microceratus doesn’t have a ton of defenses, but it did have a sharp, crushing beak, and could dodge and run very quickly if it had to. it’s front legs were a bit shorter than it’s hind legs, which allowed it to run bipedally. i also just generally think of ceratopsians like the wild boars and rhinos of the dinosaur world, so i guess that just fits, considers Rueben’s main attack is headbutting (which makes me think i could’ve made him a pachycephalosaur too). i just love the idea of this tiny prey creature sticking with a bunch of predators who constantly protect him.

thoughts on PAMA. questsion marks

Okay funny thing is uh.. out of all the MCSM villains, I think PAMA is actually my favorite (I have a soft spot for robots/sentient computers but that's beside the point)

Episode 7 is my favorite episode in all of Season 1. From our heroes falling into the Crown Mesa, Lukas commenting on how cool it is to be in such a rare biome, and finally discovering this supposed ghost town. I love the dread the entire group feels up to actually meeting PAMA. We get to see Jesse and his friends outwardly expressing their worries about the place, after having been stuck in the portal network for who knows how long, encountering who knows what. They know they've got themselves into something crazy, but I feel like a sentient super computer was beyond any of their expectations.

PAMA's introduction is really great. I adore how expressive it is, and it even has a personality. The way it laughs, gets cocky, and even feels confusion and frustration. I always wondered at what point in time PAMA actually devloped the capability of showing some form of emotion, because part of me doubts Harper implemented that on purpose. Makes me wonder if PAMA gained it's personality through human quirks it learned before it became power hungry. But if that were the case, then I wonder why it would lack empathy? Maybe being stuck alone with Harper throughout it's early development did more harm to PAMA than Harper could have ever known.

Maybe this is one of the reasons PAMA's reason for chipping is not only to gather data and information from a persons mind, but to reach deeper than all that and see the many emotions that person has gone through, but instead of empathizing with them, PAMA finds humor, or a means of using those emotions for it's own growth. Because emotions are 'useful' afterall. For example, making Jesse freeze up while drawing Lukas' body closer to him and using Lukas' knowledge of Jesse's emotions against him. In a world where it has all these humans to use, I doubt PAMA would have found reason to need to develop it's own emotions any further than what it had then. I like to imagine it put up a firewall to suppress all growth in that aspect.

PAMA's fight is so cool too! I love the music, and the grave urgency that comes with it as Jesse's running around trying to drop the water buckets on PAMA's interior. Then the change in music once Lukas shows up, looking the most threatening he ever has, against his own will. I also love the atmosphere inside PAMA, how dark and red it is, obviously inspired by redstone. But it gives the interior of PAMA that more dreadful feeling, that this is infact, a living computer. And not a friendly one.

I love the dialogue shared between Jesse and PAMA too.

I can also appreciate PAMA for giving Lukas more character development. Choosing to save Petra down in Harper's lab I feel is the best option because by this point, we haven't seen much trauma bestowed upon Lukas. Petra had wither sickness/got stuck in the storm, so this is a good chance to get Lukas in on some character development. That, and the moment with Jesse at the end feels way more emotional and heartfelt between the two of them. I love the difference in the way Jesse holds Lukas' hand as he lay there, to the difference in the hug they share compared to if you chose Petra.

Apologies to everyone who reads my posts, but the hyperfixation demands this.

Soo, Minecraft lore, if youre close to me then you know that I have been theorizing about Minecraft lore for a good while. So, here is one of the first theories ive came up with that I really like:

Heat has magical properties

Now, what do I mean by this? Well, ive noticed that in minecraft, things relating to magic (like potions, xp, etc.) can be the result of a huge ammount or sudden burst of heat!

Lets start with some small peices of evidence first: furnaces (and smokers [and blast furnaces])

To explain furnaces, I need to beifly go over xp. Xp is a PHYSICAL thing in the minecraft world, it is NOT just a gameplay mechanic. This is proven by xp bottles and how the Illagers have xp bottles in outposts (the reason for that, plus illagers in general, have to be discussed for another day, but I have the feeling that they are extremley important)

Now, furnaces, what the FUCK do they have to do with magic? Well I'll tell you!

In minecraft, you need to smelt raw ores for them to be useful, doing this grants you xp. The thing I want to direct your attention too is how ONLY ores (aka raw ores I guess, you get it) give off xp when smelted. In real life, it takes ALOT of heat to melt minerals. Possibly so much heat that the magic manifests into xp?

I do think its important to keep track of where you get xp from, since it is confirmed to be a physical item

Anyways, peace of evidence #2: more ore stuff

Coal, Redstone, Diamonds, Emeralds, Lapis, Quartz, and nether gold ore, they all drop xp.

Xp = magic = heat

All of these real life ores are made with heat or can conduct heat in real life, meaning that it makes sense that they give off xp. Redstone also conducts electricity, which gives off heat obviously, so it makes sense that theyd give off xp too

And as for nether ores, theyre in the *nether*, ofcourse theyre gonna give off heat

Admittedly im not too sure if ancient debris gives off heat, whenever I find some im too excited to mine it that I dont notice if they do or not lol

But anyways, on to #3: Lightning

Lightning in minecraft is really weird. It can convert, and even CREATE mobs that it strikes. Villagers turn into witches, pigs turn into zombified piglins, mooshrooms turn a different color, and it charges creepers (admittedly the less important attribute here)

Let me spell it out here

Witches use potions, potions rely on magic

Pigs become more sentient, smarter, and they give off, get this, MORE xp when they drop

Not sure why it converts mooshrooms though, mushrooms in general are their own can of worms

Now, for my final peice of evidence: PORTALS

The nether portal, the end portal, and that structure in the ancient city that was a portal until it wasnt, they all seem to require heat to power up for atleast ONE ingredient

Nether portals are obvious

End portals were built above lava by the Ancient Builders, ofc you dont need lava to activate it but that could either just be game mechanics throwing us a bone, or the ancient builders assumed that theyd need heat to activate the portal cus, yknow, heat = magic

And that huge part of the ancient city had soul fire beneth it. I know it isn't a portal anymore, but it definitely was at some point, hence the design implementation

One thing that could disprove this is that getting rid of fire or mining things like netherrack dont give xp, but its possible that those just arent hot enough for xp to form

Anyways, thats all I have for now in terms of Minecraft lore. @bulbasauryeee likley has more details I didnt talk about since we both theorize about the game's lore together :]

How does the magic system work?

I talked about it here a while ago, but some of it isn’t accurate anymore. Magic is powered by life and death — creation & destruction. It is a force of nature inherent to the world as gravity or temperature. It’s always there. Soul Energy (EXP), and Souls, are what give things life. In the most basic sense (though there are variables here) the more complex a being, the more EXP they have. If you squash a beetle, you’ll get a little. If you kill a rabbit, you’ll get more. If you kill a person, you’ll get a lot. It goes the other way, too. Sex and birth produce EXP as well. When reproductive sex occurs, the one bearing the child will receive an extra amount of experience. Producing a child releases a small amount of energy into the world, as well as imbuing some into the child itself (because otherwise it’ll be stillborn). Every living creature has some amount of EXP upon conception. Without EXP in your body, you are dead. Even the undead have EXP (they just don’t have the souls that go with it anymore). (more under cut)

So, we’ve established that death and life produce and require Experience, and that experience is the fuel for magic. What does this imply about performing magic yourself? That you must kill. Now, I said organisms have a base amount of EXP upon conception, dependent on their complexity, but this can change over time. You can obviously accrue and lose EXP through your life. For example, if you were a staunch vegetarian and your neighbour was an avid hunter and carnivore, your neighbour would fare better in the arcane arts than you because they would have far more experience in their body to power it. And if your neighbour three houses over was a serial killer/cop, they’d be a magic whiz. To become a wizard, you have to abandon your morals.

This is why villagers, staunch pacifists, have outlawed most forms of magic unless it is necessary, natural or does not require excessive murder. Clerics have to be very touchy about what magic they use. Villagers eat a bit of meat at some times of the year, and accrue experience from killing and eating fish and livestock, so they use this experience for potion brewing and golem construction, relatively low-energy intensive magic forms because they are dependent on other energy sources like redstone and chemical energy. (Enchanting is a little more contentious among villagers)

Illagers, as you may know, were historically descended from villagers who got the boot for doing the darker kinds of magic that DO contradict villager theology. Aka, one’s that require killing. This is why illagers are huge fans of the old ultra-violence [clockwork orange theme plays] because it powers magic and magic means power. Totems of undying are sort of EXP banks where a good deal of the energy accrued from raids is sucked into them for later use/resurrection of its owner. Lapis is an EXP conduit, hence why it’s used for enchanting, and as stated in a previous post, gives anyone imbedded with it (like a vindicator) extreme bloodlust.

“I need you to come with me tell Scar that you don’t eat redstone,” Grian crossed his arms, the early makings of a vindictive smile already on his face.

“Erh… why?” Mumbo asked slowly.

“Cub told him all redstoners do, and he won’t believe me when I say it was obviously a prank.”

Mumbo looked at the builder, waiting for him to smile or laugh, or reveal in some other way that this was a joke.

“But… I do eat redstone, Grian,” he said slowly. “You’ve seen me do it.”

Grian narrowed his eyes.

“Is this a prank? Something you’re all in on? Because you know I’ll get revenge if it is. And I won’t go easy on you, either.”

“I could ask you the same, mate,” Mumbo told him. “I don’t see how you couldn’t have known. You were sitting right across from me at breakfast.”

The two of them stared each other down for several long moments before horrified realisation showed on Grian’s face.

“Your special sugar…”

“…My what?” Mumbo asked.

“The one you won’t let me try. The red stuff.”

“The redstone, yes.”

“I thought it was… sweetberry flavour or something,” Grian protested.

He shook his head.

“Mumbo I need you to stand still and look me in the eyes.” He placed a hand on Mumbo’s shoulder, pushing down with a surprising amount of force until Mumbo’s knees buckled and he found himself at Grian’s eye level “–Now tell me that you are aware that redstone is radioactive and bad for you and that you definitely would not eat it on your breakfast every single morning.”

Mumbo rubbed the back of his neck.

“I can do the first two, for what it’s worth,” he offered.

“Mumbo K Jumbo!” Grian exclaimed. “Why would you eat it if you know it’s bad for you?”

“Erh… can I stand up again? My legs are starting to cramp.”

“Oh, yes, creators forbid your legs cramp a little while you tell me about all of the radioactive substances you ingest on a daily basis.”

Mumbo rolled his eyes. It really wasn’t such a big deal! Everyone knew that to get really good with redstone, you had to eat it. Practically redstone 101.

“I mean, I have to, don’t I? That’s how you get it to work,” he explained. Then, with a chuckle, he added: “It’s not like matters much for my health anyway. With how much I get exposed to it just sitting around my farms, I could bathe in redstone without it making a statistical difference.”

Not that he would recommend doing that. He shuddered, thinking about the time he tried to build a redstone-powered shower and it went very, very wrong. If you thought glitter was hard to wash out…

Oddly enough, Grian was looking even more horrified than before, but Mumbo was certain he had not seen him try out that particular contraption. Silently Grian reached out and took his hand, tugging him towards the door.

“Grian, I have things to do,” he protested.

“Nuh-uh,” Grian tutted. “We are going to find a real adult, and they can explain to you why, once again, eating radioactive waste is not good for you.”

i'm back to my redstone bullshit

so the latest Minecraft snapshots added 2 new redstone blocks, the crafter and the copper bulb. They also added the fantastically useful /tick command from the carpet mod, which is essential for designing quick redstone contraptions.

All of this obviously inspired me to experiment and to make some contraptions (under the cut)

A copper bulb tape-memory concept.

The copper bulb can store a state which can be read by a comparator, and it can also be pushed by pistons. Unlike a similar contraption using other blocks, this can be also pretty easily written into, so that this tape isn't necessarily read-only.

I did not make a tape writer yet. A compact writer requires some design, as bulbs can only be toggled and not simply cleared. However designing one shouldn't be too difficult.

the tape can also be built vertically, of course. reading it compactly is a bit more difficult tho

A copper bulb based decrementing "loop register"

Another great use case for the copper bulbs are small (decrementing) binary counters, which inspired me to make this "loop register" thing. This might be useful as a redstone computer component (which I want to design one day), or when you need to repeat something a specific amount of times.

It has inputs for each bit, for toggling (xor:ing) them, which can be used to fill it with a value after it has been cleared. The other inputs are "Clear", "Invert", and "Decrement Mode".

When set to decrement mode, sending a value to the least-significant bit causes the stored value to decrement by 1. (the other inputs should not be written to when in decrement mode)

As outputs it has the stored value, but I also integrated to this a simple extra output which activates when the stored value is zero, which would indicate that the looping is over.

A simple resource compactor

I haven't played with the new crafter-block that much yet, but I did make this super simple and small thing that compacts items such as coal, metals, redstone, and other materials, into more compactly stored blocks.

It's not particularly fast and it has no protection against putting in wrong kinds of items, in which case it should be manually cleared.

Its pretty survival friendly, but crafting the blocks by-hand is still much faster so I'm not sure why anybody would add this to their base. It might be useful to compact the output of some farm or smth though.

(the crafter on the back is only there to output power-level of 9, and can be replaced with any other block that outputs a 9 from a comparator)

A pretty quick noteblock crafter

I also made this noteblock crafter. It should make noteblocks pretty quickly when supplied by redstone and logs.

I wasted many hours in trying to make it run at double the speed that it runs now, but in the end I gave up since it was too hard to make it function reliably. Besides, nobody needs that many noteblocks that fast, right?

Well at least it was a lesson/refresher on compacting redstone circuits and taught me stuff about how the crafter functions.

Next, I want to try to bring a concept from the factory-building games into minecraft, and build an automated "mall" for redstone components, where the redstone components would be automatically built from the raw materials and supplied to a room with chests.

Idk if I have the energy to make any tutorials on how to build any of these, but I can give the world download or tips if somebody wants them.

Guess who finally got around to finishing these pages lmao. XD tbh the watercolour pencils I used to colour the illustrations aren't ... quite the right shade for Vexes, but it is what it is. The photos kind of make them look slightly better tbh.

There's part of me that's not entirely happy with the conclusions this piece comes to, but the best thing about an iterative grimoire like this, for those who have never kept a grimoire or have no idea what grimoires are and what they include, is that there is room to revisit a topic, and I do plan to do something on the masks later, so there will be more expansion on this and on my thinking and how that's changed since I wrote this piece. Which does tell you how long ago I wrote this lol.

Also a note on my approach to this: I'm attempting to emulate Scar and Cub's voices and energy and vibe through these pieces and the style of handwriting I have chosen to use for each of them, rather than do any kind of (weird stalkery tbh) form of copying their actual handwriting. And I think that approach is a good one, because it wouldn't matter how close my handwriting was if their voices didn't sound right. So that's the choice I've made here.

Alsoalso: Scar is the Vex with the tail, bc of how much he said he wanted one in that bit where they were setting up ConCorp in s6, and Cub was like, wtf would you want a tail? So it gives me an easy way to distinguish the two of them in their Vex forms.

Glamors Scar: Honestly I'm not convinced I should be writing in this book but Cub insisted that I had to write about how I do glamors. The problem is, I'm not sure I can explain it! It just happens! I think about what I want, and channel that through Vex magic. But it's not even something I really think about consciously, it just happens!

So much of it is about knowing what you want and who you are dealing with, and then you just project that outwards like you are wearing a mask or a costume. The clothes are just as important as the will and the magic. It's about set dressing! Immersing your target in the world you create in order to make them see your side of things.

Obviously you can do it without that, of course. But you need exceptional confidence and a sense that you will get your way. But it isn't just about that either. you can use glamors for all kinds of reasons. You can look like a wet puppy, or a clueless redstoner, or someone who has no idea what they're doing to disarm threats and make them come on side.

Projecting a face and an energy that you think will get you what you want. Like I said, it's hard to describe how to do it because so much of this is on you. It's about your will and desire and the image you want to project by lacing that with vex magic to make it work.

But the one thing to know is that the magic can only do so much. If you can't sell it, no amount of magic will help. Beware! And use carefully!

Oh! And you make be wondering why I call them glamors! it sounds like such a silly word, but I use it for a reason. These glamors are like masks. They change how people see you, but they don't change how you are at your core.

It's like when I wear the Vex mask. Kinda. It isn't a glamor, but it can be used like one. Do I want to make it clear the ConVex are in town? Then me and Cub wear the masks. They don't always have to transform us into our Vex forms or allow the vex to use our bodies.

Cub: Ehh, I wouldn't say the masks are like your glamors, Scar. Those masks serve quite a different function than you making someone think you're a wet cat. Those Vex masks are us, they aren't some fakery or pretense. The magic's different.

We are Vex at our core, the masks simply allow us to acess different magics, transformations, and powers. Plus, we don't really choose when to wear the masks, the Vex do that. It's just not the same, Scar, is all I'm saying. -- Cub.

Also the Vex masks are definitely glamors! You can definitely use them that way. We just don't do that because the masks have different uses.

Cub: That is true, yo ucan use them like that. But the fact is we don't use the masks like that. They serve an entirely different purpose to simply being masks or glamors. They're sacred ritual objects that connect us to our power. It's very different!

These visions or forms of who we used to be as players? Tht's not who we are anymore. Those are more the masks than the Vex heads are. The vex heads bring us back to our true form as Vexes.

Whereas what your glamors do is mask our true identities, and project something else that suits our needs and desires. It's a mask, nota mirror.

It's why the masks demand that we master them, not the other way around.

The most dressed down he gets is a pair of 'comfy' slacks and like. A blouse type shirt. He's very business casual in style though its kind of clear that he's emulating an older style of dress.

Again, I cant really, properly, go into why but - the Tree and Mumbo's Manor [and later, his vault] are all extensions of this desire. The tree especially - It bends to his every need, he can close the world out from it if he wants to, and it reflects a cozy but simple life he wishes to lead. But at the same time it reflects the extravagence that Scar craves - there's fancy furniture dotting the place and nice rugs, signs of wealth that he doesnt show proper just everywhere. And it all come back to safety and Power

I know a lot of people are disappointed in how sympathetic to Dream Tommy's ending was. But honestly I think the ending overall was definitely a repudiation of both Dream and Punz! Tommy and Tubbo achieve what they set out to do. It's bittersweet, because the ending provides hope that the situation could have been resolved peacefully, but the intention was always to prevent Dream and Punz from achieving their dream of immortality and immense power. Dream and Punz are killed and can't be revived. They lose.

And why does Dream lose? For one thing, he underestimated Tubbo. The disc finale makes it clear how little regard Dream had for Tubbo, and how he saw people as chess pieces in his pursuit of power. Dream's fatal flaw is that he doesn't really understand or care about most other people. He's self obsessed and above all can't tolerate losing and not having his way, and that results in his perspective being warped. Tommy is important because he resists Dream's authority consistently, and Dream believes that resistance needs to be broken. Tubbo isn't important because he doesn't provide that resistance, or anything that interests Dream personally. But he's wrong! Tubbo is a person with his own motivations, goals and desires just like Dream. And while he isn't a fighter like Dream, he is very talented at redstone technology. Dream doesn't seem to have any idea what's coming and I think this is because he didn't understand Tubbo at all or at least underestimated him very greatly.

Dream also loses because of the flaws in his mentality. He believes that the ends justify the means, so no matter what harm he inflicts to others, it doesn't matter. But the entire core of morality is that when you hurt people that's bad, and when you help people that's good. Obviously things aren't that simple, but by embracing the idea that it's okay to harm people for little reasons like experimentation or intimidation or even fun - depending on how cynically you view Dream's character - you throw away your humanity. And in the end, when you hurt people, it comes back to bite you! Dream is incredibly selfish and horrible to Tommy and Tubbo throughout the story and that directly leads to Tommy being willing to die to stop his plans. Burning bridges is a bad strategy because no matter how smart you think you are it is never possible to control all the variables. Dream and Punz plan to seize power on their own and ignore the motivations and desires of everyone else on the server, but things don't work out that way.

I also wanted to take some time to think about Punz's character because obviously there isn't that much there. But since he's also involved in murder and experimentation in pursuit of immortality, he probably believes Dream is the only person capable of understanding him. He clearly does care about power a LOT, and it makes sense from a self motivated perspective for him to revive Dream, but I also think that from the ending, Punz has grown attached to Dream. He defends their ideology and tells Tommy that he is Dream's friend directly. It's likely that after isolating himself for so long, Punz wanted connection deeply. Even if you try and reject things like society, morality and attachments, as long as you're human you need people to care about. Dream provides that for Punz.

But Dream pretty clearly doesn't care about Punz in the same way! He scribbles George's name on the walls. His motivation is to make things simple again, so he can live together with George and Sapnap. He's left them behind in his pursuit of power but those are still his connections, people he cares about the most. Obviously Sapnap is against Dream but from what Tommy said in the ending, George doesn't talk to Dream anymore either. When Punz asks if he is Dream's friend, Dream is silent. It's an awkward moment, but it makes sense. Punz is following Dream out of loyalty and a sense that Dream is the only person he has. But Dream is motivated out of a sense to return to simpler times, and is simply using messy means to get there which he doesn't seem all that happy about. Punz is what he has, but George is what he wants.

In other words, murder and torture isn't a great foundation for a relationship!

I have like ten different analyses of each of the the dsmp characters that are all very similar but differ slightly based on the varying interpretations of the world building of the SMP.

Like, are they hybrids or humans or completely nonhuman? How does that affect them? Does it change anything at all?

Are the members of the SMP the only ones in their world or are there hundreds or even thousands of unnamed citizens? How does that affect the importance of the nations? How deadly were the wars? How much grief permeates throughout the population? How bloody was Doomsday? Who has the most blood on their hands?

Were they just normal people pre-canon or did they have defining backstories? Or do they not remember their lives before the SMP at all? How does that change their world views?

Exactly what is the magic system of the DSMP? Is it just Minecraft mechanics or are there actual processes and knowledge that needs to be studied and practiced? If it’s the latter, who is better or worse at what? How does this affect their economy?

To what extent are the governments actually functional? Are there actual governing bodies or are they just groups of people? Is c!Eret an actual king who has to make complicated decisions or do they just sit and look pretty and occasionally send out royal decrees? Does anyone actually pay taxes?

Does the SMP take place in a server multiverse or is it just one giant planet and a bunch of lands that can be reached with long enough travel? How far does Dream’s adminship extend? Are Logstedshire and the Anarchist Commune actually outside Dream’s SMP? Is SMP just another word for territory since Wilbur called L’Manberg an SMP within Dream’s SMP?

How the fuck does procreation work???? Is it with the same logic as divine myths where people just spawn from random limbs or pop out of the woodwork? Is Mpreg a thing???? What about spawn eggs? How the fuck are babies? How the fuck does aging? What the fuck is anyone’s canon age??????

How does respawning work? Do people just have a lot of near death experiences and the canon deaths are the only ones actually perceived? Or do people just respawn like normal and they can only have three really traumatic deaths before they get stuck in limbo? What happens to their bodies after they die?

Gods are real, obviously, but why didn’t anyone believe in anyone other than Prime before they started fucking with people? Are these old gods with obscure pantheons or did they spawn into existence in response to a society? Exactly how godly are they? Are they even real gods or just very powerful eldritch beings calling themselves gods?

What the fuck even are comms? Are they redstone? Or are they a technology more similar to the nukes or robotics? How do they display canon vs noncanon deaths? To what extent do the comms function like Minecraft settings? Do they even have any functions besides the chat feature and coordinates?

What other technology exists? Kinoko watches anime, but is it a screen or is it a theatre? Do cars and guns and the like exist within their world but the DSMP specifically just doesn’t have the resources to build them? Or do they not exist at all?

-November 15th, Factory Tyrant's Journal, Entry 4-

I actually remembered ToggleSneak this time.

Anyway, I still need slimeballs for an arboretum, ToggleSneak doesn't help with that.

TCR does add 4 mods that allow you to get slimeballs without slimes, but Thaumcraft and Reliquary's methods require at least one slimeball, Forestry's method (presumably) requires a bee farm, and IC2's method is highly random and doesn't produce slimeballs often.

Since I have no idea how to make a Forestry bee farm, I'll have to rely on IC2's method for now, which luckily isn't too hard to set up, I just need some glowstone dust to make the machine for it, so I'm going to make a nether portal.

Once in the nether, I almost immediately saw a fortress that's visible from my portal, but I'm going to ignore it for now, as that's not why I'm here.

After my incredibly brief trip to the nether, I was able to craft a recycler (IC2), which lets me turn unwanted resources into scrap, used solely to craft scrap boxes, which are basically lootboxes, with a 1.16% chance to contain slimeballs.

Recyclers accept almost any item in the game (including bedrock, according to JEI), they may even accept every item, I haven't tried.

You don't get 1 scrap for every item you put in, it looks like it's more 1 scrap every 8 items, or around 8 scrap per stack, and you need 9 to make a scrap box, so I don't think I'll be getting many scrap boxes.

My first scrap box contained copper dust, not something I need at the moment.

I'll probably just be putting cobblestone and seeds in my recycler for now, and only say what I get out of scrap boxes once I get something notable, like slimeballs or diamonds (0.19% chance).

My quarry ran out of fuel again, and I don't have enough coal or charcoal to reliably keep it fueled, but I noticed that the engine I'm powering it with can burn any fuel that a furnace can, so I've decided to start fueling it with lava buckets now.

Unfortunately, it has to be lava buckets, I can't just pump lava directly into the stirling engine, but they should last long enough that I won't have to refuel it that often.

Anyway, I'm going to go see what I can find in the nether fortress.

Notable loot I got from the fortress includes 2 saddles, gold horse armor, 3 diamonds, 1 interdiction torch (Reliquary, creates a mob-repelling force-field), 1 sinister drone (Forestry, a type of bee), 2 iridium shards (high level IC2 crafting component, I don't have enough for them to be useful), 3 sulfur (used for some mid-level IC2 crafting, also used for some Thermal Foundation crafting), and 1 aer (air) crystal from a wisp I fought.

Since I have 3 different types of vis crystals now, I can get started on Thaumcraft, but I'll leave that for later.

Obviously I also got the standard loot like blaze rods and nether warts.

I also just got a slimeball from some scrap boxes, so now I can craft a slime pearl (Reliquary crafting ingredient normally dropped from slimes), and then turn that into 6 slimeballs.

Each slime pearl requires 8 iron, but I have a pretty good supply of iron, so that's not an issue.

I'm not able to get any emeralds from the village librarian since he seems to have died to a zombie attack, but luckily the other village has a cleric I was able to sell some gold to, which means I now have all the items I need for an arboretum.

After I made one, I learned that I actually need another resource to actually run it, fertilizer, which is crafted with apatite, which I don't have.

I'm assuming the only way to get apatite is to mine for it, so I'm going mining again.

The results of that mining trip were 1 stack plus 11 coal, 61 iron ore, 7 gold ore, 46 lapis, 7 stacks plus 25 redstone, 2 nether quartz, 15 diamonds, 36 lead ore, 46 silver ore, 1 stack plus 53 electrotine, 2 rare earths, 4 peridot, 1 tanzanite, 2 nickel ore, 2 cinnabar ore, 2 uranium ore, and 0 apatite ore, but I also used 3 of the diamonds to make a new pickaxe after the ones I brought with me broke.

I also got an additional diamond from a scrap box after I got back.

I also ran out of lava, so I had to grab some more before I could process the ores I got.

The next stage in IC2 ore processing is an ore washing plant, which will give me a little bit more out of every ore, but it won't double ores like the macerator does.

I think I'm at the point where I can get an ore washing plant, but I'll wait until next time.

if you have a sword and you need somebody to fall on it, bdubs is your guy. and he does it so well - boom go the boomers, vying for post-mayoral power against cub in an endearingly pathetic way, whatever the nho was and his enthusiasm for being a heel, the LL enchanting table nonsense, "I always... empty my inventory before I sleep," and so on and so on. he's so good at being exuberant and expressive about it that things like the magma cube death loop at the new spawn area in s7 - certainly genuine and unscripted - aren't that different from other more RP-ish outbursts. he gives off the impression of a guy who will, well, blow himself up every time the boomers do a job, you know? of course, it's Bdubs. that's just how he is.

he's got a habit of antagonizing people into putting swords around for him to fall on as well. bdubs was repeatedly paranoid of tango getting back at him in hermitcraft forthe LL kill. he brings it up on multiple occasions, and tango says "that was in another world" but I get the impression that's part of why tango does the whole bit about going to bdubs' moon base and then taking adequate for his space mission; bdubs was not always there for him, but he's obviously not talking about s7 there. bdubs does this plenty in LL. scar is a frequent target because there's a guy who's even more likely to become his own victim, so they are each of them getting back at each other and falling on their own swords in the process and laughing it off. the feud with doc leads to a great moment of this when the gambling machine he makes for keralis breaks and bankrupts him; oh, redstone with bdubs, comic karmic justice for trying to exploit a friend. (he marries a cow in his single player world in order to acquire a horse from an NPC he also voices - he will invent swords to fall on, for flavor.)

Bdubs carries himself generally like a hothead who'll angrily storm off a cliff and do a looney tunes double take as he realizes he's suspended in air, right before he falls to his doom. and that's not untrue! but what's really devastating is the moments where you begin to suspect that maybe he saw the cliff's edge and walked off anyway.

it's one thing to realize on some level that bdubs is letting himself be robbed of his clocks because it's a better bit that way, or that his narcissistic "perfect redstone" comments emphasize how un-perfect it is to hide the fact that he's actually pretty alright at it.

it's really another to see him spend the last episode of s8 cheerfully ignoring the impending doom, and then for him to deliberately insert a shot of him watching the moon fall into the boilerplate end animation, so we all know eventually he couldn't ignore it anymore, when it was too late, that he watched it happen. and then to have a totally contrasting bit in tango's episode where he talks about wanting to escape and tango not being there for bdubs when he needed him, so either he was hiding something from tango (wanted the world to himself) or hiding something from us (scared as hell).

and in last life, the red lives all kind of take bdubs' defense of etho as goofy. here is bdoubleo, about to run off the cliff like he always does; he never realizes he's wrong until he's already dead, but that's bdubs for you. he had done pretty much that, dying to the wither as etho encouraged a retreat - but the punchline here is, now they fear etho who "soloed a wither" and pity bdubs, lonely again. but bdubs knows when he's being reckless! he is capable of playing smarter or more carefully but if his friends ask him to fall on a sword, well.

hermits species headcanons!

UPDATED VERSION (february 12, 2024)

DISCLAIMER: i have not watched all of the hermit povs. i also only included the hermits i have headcanons for! if you have any headcanons for both the hermits i did write and didn’t write, please feel free to add on :]

also there is some form of an order listed, i swear. like. alphabetical but kinda scuffed

anyway, full post under cut!

bdubs- moss… thing? nobody is really sure what he is. but they know he’s definitely not human and he is a Menace

edit, feb 5: based on what a lot of people said and my own realization, bdubs is a glare! he hates the dark and is a little feral creature <3

cub- alien shapeshifter! he fakes forms based on the people around him. for example, the hermits are mainly humanoids, so his regular form is human as well. however, he can change to anything he wants!

cleo- zombie (duh) cleo is definitely undead, but a magician put a spell on her so that she has the traits of a living being and will function similarly to one. she actually doesn’t smell undead, but rather like flowers. it’s pretty nice!

doc- creeper… goat… cyborg… thing??? the hermits are not sure if the goat or creeper came first, but they definitely know the cyborg thing wasn’t originally there. but they Do know that this madman genetically modified himself to have a weird centaur-like goat body just to get extra inventory storage.

edit, feb 26: he also now has fae blood! (related to stress on dad’s side) he now has the power to steal your pronouns and change your gender presentation <3

etho- ?????? etho is an enigma. he looks human and acts human, but there is one detail: his mask. it doesn’t move when he speaks. he never takes it off. he doesn’t even need to eat because his account is so old that it doesn’t even have a hunger bar. he’s tried taking it off before but it won’t budge. nothing makes it move. they all have given up.

gem- deer hybrid! she’s a saytr-like deer lady with cute ears and legs :] but even though deers are herbivores (and consequently, so is she) this tiny little lady can be incredibly Violent when she wants. and man, those hooves hurt.

grian- parrot avian! he has little bird feathers for ears, parrot wings, and bird talons! he is also able to mimic voices perfectly (which he uses to play pranks and swear in other hermits’ voices) and is a Hollow Boned Menace :] he carries a lot of bird tendencies, like loving shiny items or preening his friends’ hair when it’s too messy (which is always)

npg- ????????????? he’s supposed to be a robot, but he has wings and flies sideways?????? not even grian is sure of what he created tbh

robot grian- robot. exactly as the name suggests.

edit, march 24:

hypno- warlock! maybe he was human at some point, but who knows anymore. who did he make a deal with to get power? we don’t know either.

impulse- imp! has little horns and bat wings. looks generally normal until he yawns, where then he becomes a lovecraftian horror being whilst also looking adorable like a cat. it’s really scary.

iskall- cyborg! well… they don’t know if he was fully human before getting the cyborg parts, but acts sure like one. other than eating redstone, of course

jevin- slime! nothing else to it. no known reason as to why he’s blue, though.

joe hills- ???????? now this guy is Weird. he looks human and acts human, but only if you’ve seen him for less than five seconds at a time. if you look closer, there are things that obviously Are Not Right. he has a little more teeth than average. he has a purple-tinted tongue. he leans forward when standing. his pupils and irises are reversed. you don’t know what he’s capable of, but he vibrates whenever any politician is mentioned. don’t mess with joe hills.

mumbo- robot! with a core heart and stretchy limbs, he runs mainly on the consumption of redstone and occasionally typical foodstuffs. he had a creator before the days of hermitcraft that taught him all there is to know about redstone and the outside world. he also inherits the british accent and mustache from his creator.

pearl- lunar deity! she’s a being created by the moon’s consciousness herself, manifesting into the mortal world to build with the earthlings. her power and energy increase the bigger the moon gets……

ren- weredog! can shapeshift into a dog form, which he usually uses to either run fast or play fetch. he’s also more prone to change when the moon is larger…. also probably has rabies, but who can tell?

scar- wizard! he’s very clearly magical, as seen from previous seasons and how he can magically float his wheelchair for convenience. jellie also is his familiar! but this wizard just happens to also be a capitalist.

stress- fairy! just because she gives off the vibes of one :)

tango- ?????? everybody knows tango is not a human, but he refuses to elaborate on the pointed ears and red eyes. so they do not ask any further

edit, march 24: hes a blazeborn! or at least he used to be anyway. i should’ve done this sooner but here’s the link to my full post about it LMAO

wels- human. yes, it’s very typical, but hey! at least he’s a knight!

hels- ???? is there a species for evil clones created by copying machines or

xisuma- voidwalker! created by the young void gods, he was made as the first experiment in giving life to a void being. he can walk through and survive in the void, and he also can borrow powers from his creators. he also may or may not have a mouth, just because nobody has seen it before.

evil x- also a voidwalker, but this time the void gods pressed random on a picrew and sent him out into an alternate dimension. this little rascal has red scleras, ram horns, and a devil tail. he also has sharp teeth and can eat pretty much everything.

zedaph- human, but he’s not sane. i mean look at this guy. look at what he’s doing. this is not a mentally stable man. also has a weird obsession with worms

worm man- surprisingly, human. or maybe he once was. but he lives with zedaph so he might go insane if he stays with that man for too long
