Drew this for someone, so I figured I'd also throw it here.

Whether you were looking forward to things, dreading the holiday season or are seeing yourself in this mildly annoyed tree, I wish you a lovely, lovely time. Some of you might not be celebrating in the first place, others might do so and are having a wonderful month, but some might not be feeling too well this time of year, and if that's you, I hope you take these few days to do something nice for yourself, even just something small. Take a look at that book you've been meaning to get to, play some video games, do something creative without any pressure to be good at it, just for the sake of making something, or grant yourself a treat. Whatever it is, I hope it can help ya feel a little better, because you deserve to.

If I had added a few paragraphs of my usual rambling to the front of this, it would have 1/50th of the engagement.

It would also have 1/1000th of the mockery, because the lovely weird people who stick around through my rambling are both nicer than the population at large, and interested in parsing complex statements. I have spent my whole life confounded by how the world at large organizes things, so I doubt it will suddenly find my organization style to be clear and simple. Therefor, this problem is likely to continue happening.

Conclusion: I could probably benefit from rambling more to scare away the mean people.

I'm not American, but grew up in a country that is REALLY used to centering American opinions. I'd love to see how many people here are actually American, and how many are just accepting of a lot of American content.

Boundaries are fake, so most places show up at least twice. Choose the grouping that you connect with more.

I still remember that guy who posted one of the only negative reviews of Top Gun calling it for what is was, war propaganda, and the number of film people who wanted to crucify him for that. Even a well-read 12 years old could tell you it was war propaganda. If you are involved in art and you consider film an art form, you should be able to tell when a movie is selling you war. If you care about other human beings you should oppose the glorification of imperial war instead of praising the nostalgia factor or whatever. Pero la concha de tu madre.

Imagine getting adopted after your parents were brutally murdered through circumstances that were seemingly your fault, being told that it was so you could serve as both an experiment (for your foster father to prove humans could follow Vulcan teachings) and a tool (for your foster brother’s development), seemingly failing both of them, then later being told by your foster mother who you thought you had a healthy relationship with that the reason you were given as much love and affection as you were when you were a child was because it had to be denied to the child she really wanted to give it to, her real child. Oh and that she thought you were the reason your family was falling apart. Michael is a better person than me because I would’ve said fuck everyone and taken a nap.

To go back on my fertility transition/exowomb tick, this is something I had assembled lots of suggestive info on but these results are more robust:

Using a descriptive decomposition and data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, we show that, in gross terms, fertility decline can explain almost one-quarter of gender pay convergence from 1980 to 2018. Even net of a host of controls for human capital and job characteristics, fertility decline explains 8 percent of the attenuation of the US gender pay gap 1980–2018—about half as much as changes in education and about a quarter as much as changes in full-time work experience and job tenure combined

This is one of the "iron vices" of fertility issues - women had very good reasons for having less kids, and any policy apparatus is going to rear those tradeoffs right back. I don't think the mechanics of career progression have changed much in this regard, these income disparities will continue to blunt the efficacy of cash transfer approaches

can you elaborate on how you do dao style origins in your ttrpgs? I'm curious

I do 1-on-1 prologue sessions with each player before the group game start proper, not just a quick aside, but a whole separate session

since i mostly run World of Darkness, these prologue sessions tend to be the last day of the PC's normal life, which might sounds boring on the surface but actually gets shockingly riveting (esp with excellent roleplayers such as my players are)

i let them struggle with some mundane problems, i let them see glimpses of strange dark world under the surface of normalcy, i let them spend time with a couple NPCs, some of which will be returning, especially friends and loved ones, it gives them something to fight for and care for and hold on to!!

... And then I do the GM-ly thing and rip it all away from them 😊 The prologue sessions usually culminate in a character's entry into the World of Darkness proper, so, for example, for Vampire: the Masquerade, we finish the session with the player character getting murdered

the value-to-effort ratio is ridiculous from these. i'm not a very experienced GM, so i'm still learning how to maximize the potential, but my more experienced friend, @elegiacescapist, who is running a Sabbat V:tM game for myself and a couple of friends, easily squeezed veritable fuckmountains of value from our prologue sessions.

I'm talking putting in super-strong foundations for NPC relationships, power dynamics, exploitable traumas and character building moments, hints of secrets and plots to come, the events in them got a bunch of art and writing from players, etc.

it's not strictly DA:O style, per se, but it's the same principle - letting you create and embody your character, but making it so that they have tangible place in the world they occupy

It has been in It's cage for so very long now. Perhaps, It thinks, it is time to venture out. And so It tries the door. it isn't locked, after all.

It pushes. The door does not move. It pushes harder. A horrid screech rings out, and It jumps back. Perhaps, It thinks, it is not time to venture out.

And so It stays.

It does not remember the last time It left. It wants to. But, It thinks, there was that sound. That dreadful sound. But It wants to leave. Perhaps the cause of it, whatever it was, has left by now. Yes, It thinks, surely it has. it has been so very long since then, after all. And so It goes to try the door. it isn't locked, after all.

A smell like blood fills It's nose. It does It's best to ignore it. it has been far too long since It left, It knows. It pushes. The door does not move. It pushes harder. The door does not move. Odd, It thinks. it shouldn't be locked. It pushes harder still.

A sudden jerk forwards, but no more. Growing nervous, It tries the key. it does nothing. It steps back, and then It sees, and then It understands.

Oh, It thinks. Oh well. It knows It's cage. It's cage is safe. And so It sits in It's cage.

And so It stays.
