I am not saying here's a link to a free online version of the 1984 graphic novel but if it was there you should probably go read it.
#i just finished it and i want a physical copy now it was so good#i remember i had struggled a bit with the original novel because it felt a bit slow and i think my translation wasn't the best#but this version is super powerful thanks to the illustrations#and since there's the visual support i feel like all the writing is even more punchy because it's really concentrated#so every page is a punch in the guts#if you loved the novel you should read this version and if you didn't like the novel you should read this version even more#great way to make a potentially scary classic more approachable#go read it#book#books#bookblr#booklr#1984#george orwell#distopia#classics#politics#free books

👑 Anora Mac Tir, The Queen of Ferelden👑
"I will always be my father's daughter."
#I know she had her space buns on the back at the bottom but Calpernia is too iconic so they had to migrate#if they ever (never) do a remake of Origins I want her to be like Padme from Star Wars - a different dress in every scene#she's a great and complex character but DAO doesn't show her at her best as a queen imo - especially regarding the city elves#girl stands up to everyone but her father - who is the one person who she *needs* to stand up to -> i get why she doesn't but still...#its very compelling for her character but there's a reason I almost always have Alistair as king lmao <3#super interesting to think about what story was going on adjacent to what the Warden is doing - the politics and drama of it all#took inspo for the hair and clothing from Tom Tierney's Celtic paperdoll books - I adore his historical fashion <3#anora mac tir#dragon age origins#my art <3#dragon age#da fanart

tbh my latest biggest theory for why HoO and onwards is such a dramatic drop in quality and consistency is just. Rick stopped making teaching guides.
Like, the Lightning Thief teacher's guide is SUPER in-depth with even stuff like sources about middle grade child psychology and exact specifications of where he's applying that, explaining what different character's goals/motivations are, their dynamics with each other and their environments, etc etc. Even specifying which specific myths certain plot elements are supposed to reference or be about.
That stuff just doesn't exist for later books. There's activity guides and smaller, significantly more simple teacher guides for later books but they don't go into anywhere NEAR the same level of depth. The TLT one is a full lesson plan that breaks down the book at every level and explains what's going on and more or less why Rick did that. The others are all basically just glossaries of terminology and some simple question guides.
And they didn't even use the TLT teacher's guide for the Disney+ show because they clearly aren't adhering to any of what's discussed in that breakdown of the book.
By creating a teaching guide alongside writing the actual book, that's forcing you to document what you're doing, why, your sources, and information about your characters and the story they're in. It's like an even more in-depth version of a series bible. But that's lacking for later books (and etc) and it shows because that level of thought and depth and attention just isn't there anymore.
#pjo#riordanverse#rick riordan#rr crit#< i suppose#imo one of the most damning parts of the drop of quality in the later books is you can tell exactly what parts of what books#Rick had planned in advance and which are just filler to get from point a to point b#because characters will jump in and out of consistent behaviors - particularly in HoO - and those lapses where they act weird#are almost always super disconnected from the rest of the plot or storyline or whatever arc that character is on#or are just so clearly sped through because they aren't important#Leo is a great character imo to look at to figure out if it's a filler scene or not lmao#if he's clearly masking being somber by putting on a silly act but dropping it quickly or otherwise largely acting serious/somber#then it's probably a more considered scene and actually paying attention to his overall character arc#or just remembering how the characters are supposed to act (in Leo's case - quiet/thoughtful/somber but masking it with humor/etc)#if he's 100% silly goofy depression arc nowhere in sight then its probably mostly a filler scene or at least his part in it is filler#anyways i highly recommend reading the tlt teaching guide its really interesting actually

This is about Hindley:
«After a short suspense it was opened by a tall, gaunt man, without neckerchief, and otherwise extremely slovenly; his features were lost in masses of shaggy hair that hung on his shoulders; and his eyes, too, were like a ghostly Catherine’s, with all their beauty annihilated».
And this is about Heathcliff:
«a tall man dressed in dark clothes, with dark face and hair. He leant against the side, and held his fingers on the latch, as if intending to open for himself. “Who can it be?” I thought. “Mr. Earnshaw?”»
Heathcliff is the character most often described as tall (and altogether big), with Hindley also being described as tall, as well as Linton, Heathcliff’s son, being said he was tall for his age (which is fitting).
I find so juicy that Heathcliff and Hindley look somewhat alike, at least structure-wise, enough to make Nelly think for one moment Heathcliff could have been him, and scratch the idea because no, that's not Hindley's voice. You resemble the man who destroyed you. It goes both ways. His child looks like his sister. One could think it was her child instead. A stranger will think the boy your son. You'll smile at the irony.
#«“And this young man is—” / “Not my son assuredly!”#Heathcliff smiled again as if it were rather too bold a jest to attribute the paternity of that bear to him.»#I didn't remember Hareton being described as tall and for now indeed I can't find any mention hinting he was particularly tall#I did find this one line highlighted and what can I say I adore it#“How little did I dream that Hindley would ever make me cry so!” said by Cathy#I adore when little glimpses of the fact they were fond of each other show up#I also find this so funny: “the entrance of Heathcliff relieved me in some measure from my uncomfortable state”#Hilarious that everyone is so unlikeable Lockwood finds solace in Heathcliff’s presence. You must be the first lol#Of course it's in great part because of Heathcliff why they're like that#(although in Hareton's case it kinda seems he is mainly overall very jealous and tense; very reminiscent of kid Heathcliff)#Lockwood does notice something though. This is what he thinks when Heathcliff talks to Catherine:#“The tone in which the words were said revealed a genuine bad nature. I no longer felt inclined to call Heathcliff a capital fellow”#So interesting that Heathcliff’s vitriol is so clear that it makes Lockwood reevaluate#Really the second Catherine is the person whose existence grates more on Heathcliff’s nerve ugh#Super interesting considering how she is otherwise relatively harmless. She's no Hindley and yet. It makes all the sense though in some way#Good for her tbh haha#God I love this book beyond words#Anyway. Back on my point. Elordi would have made a very good Hindley#I talk too much#Wuthering Heights#Hindley Earnshaw#Heathcliff

No one had netflix releases a good adaptation of a Latin American literature classic that was considered impossible to adapt to screen on the bingo card.
Even less after the netflix releases a decent but nothing more adaptation of another latam classic also considered impossible to adapt. And the HBO butchers a third one that should be easy to adapt and perfectly setup for a tv show incidents in the past few months.
#cien años de soledad#a hundred years of solitude#the other two are pedro paramo and como agua para chocolate#100 años de soledad I 100% reccomend the show (and book) just be aware that it feels very different from a US/UK show as it should#the others read the books#or watch the como agua para chocolate film#I will never forgive the changes the show did#it was such a great opportunity to show a reality of mexico and that women arent just weak oppressed beings#and the book literally ends with the lead character doing everything in her power to break abuse cycles#super relevant book for today#but nooooo we wanted to say tradition bad and girlboss good#thats against the point of the book#it is one of my favorites ever and I hated every second of the show to the point where I am rereading the book atm to cleanse my brain

it has come to the attention of the groupchat that i have neither read The Great Gatsby nor seen any film or stage adaptations of it, so here is my attempt to summarize what i think the plot is based solely on cultural osmosis:
in The 1920s™, some guy from the Midwest (maybe Kansas?) moves to New York City and falls homoerotically into the orbit of some nouveau riche heartthrob who lives out in the Hamptons. i think the Good Country Boy's name is Nick Caraway (like the seed), which would make it funny if he wound up in Rye, NY, but i get the vibe it's a resolutely unfunny novel, so this doesn't happen. the rich guy's name is probably Tom, and either his last name is Gatsby or there's some other character who's also rich who has that name. (George? George Gatsby? is that right?)
Tom (let's go with that for now) is married to or cheating on his wife with Daisy, who is generally an irresponsible drunk party girl type, but this could be because of Trauma. Tom has a new car, which is Very sexy, until Daisy runs over a baby with it and drives it into a pool. (i think it's her baby? but it could be someone else's)
anyway, Nick is at first very beguiled by these people and wants to be part of their set (and also to kiss Tom and/or George deeply and passionately with tongue), but then he is like "wait, you are all actually terrible people and there's so much alcoholism here i don't think this is actually how i want to live" and he has this realization under the eyes of an optometrist's sign which glimmers across the water (the Long Island Sound??? that seems too far for light the travel that clearly, but the other option is the?? Atlantic Ocean??? and that's Worse) with a green neon light that symbolizes G-d looking down on us impassively from a distance full of sorrow but not intervening
and because he's a Good Country Boy at heart, the novel ends with Nick going back to Kansas (Tennessee?) to escape the Rotten City and the last page closes with one of the all-time great adverb deployments as we're all borne back like boats, ceaselessly into the past
#how did i do#The Great Gatsby#i assume there's a lot of other stuff before the Baby Incident?#but also i don't get the vibe it's a super long book#so#truly who can say

Me-made Snorkmaiden figure! Created with air-dry clay, acrylic paint, a lil bit of hot glue and lots and lots of love!

She even has her own collector's card! :3 (1/1 because she's one of a kind 💕)

#funfact I made a full plan sheet for her with everything I needed written n sketched out I was SERIOUS when I got the idea to make her#she came out better than I expected for sure! I wanted to sort of show the colour changing of snorks by giving her this peachy coat but I'm#not sure if it worked too well but meh it looks great on the figure! Had to use hot glue to stick her to the platform bc I was out of#super glue 😭😭😭#I used Snorkmimi's og design cause... my- my design of her isn't *really* figure friendly. Especially for someone as inexperienced as me in#the art of the “clay sculpting”#Snorkmaiden#moomin#moomin books#moomins

So I went to an early screening for the first two episodes of the Percy Jackson show yesterday (Saturday), and let me just say, it is 100% the adaptation we deserve. It was amazing. Once it ended, I wanted more.
The characterizations were amazing, any changes there were made sense and made the situation more realistic and added tension, the story was straight from the book, it was just amazing.
I went with my mom and she, who doesn't know the books, really enjoyed it. I asked her how she liked it (literary just the first two episodes) compared to Harry Potter (which i had her watch a few years back), and she said there was no contest. She likes the pjo show much more. She said it was engaging and even had her wanting the next episode once it was done.
Everyone needs to watch this show. It was amazing. It lives up to the hype. We need to make sure it gets greenlit for season 2.
#oc it's not perfect#there is one (1) critique i have but tbh it's not a super big deal and could very well be rectified in future episodes#but other than that it was absolutely amazing#the whole theater was clapping at iconic moments and it was a great experience too#once we got home i made my mom rewatch the lightning theif movie with the new context so that she could see what weve had to live with#she hated it lol and she doesnt even know the amount of inaccuracies bc she hasnt read the book#she said it's just a bad movie in general and she's right lol#anyway the show was AMAZING everyone make sure to watch it as it comes out so that they greenlight S2#riordanverse#rick riordan#percy jackson show#percy jackson tv series#percy jackon and the olympians#percy jackson#annabeth chase#grover underwood#pjo series#pjo show#percy jackson disney+#pjo disney+#pjo#no pjo spoilers

So I just made the most half-assed, spur of the moment notebook, and I think it looks pretty cute 🥹

Process pics + lil video bellow 👇
Disclaimer: I've done much better binding before, this was a very last minute, let's just have fun, quick thing, so don't judge it too hard 🥺
So! I was sorting through some papers and such, and I found these loose signatures I had taken out of an old notebook and never did anything with. Figured I could turn them into a cute lil sketchbook!

I ended up using just the three bigger stacks (the smaller I'll do later), and some used watercolour paper to make the inner case a bit sturdier.
Took out the fraying old threads, bound the three signatures together, and then stitched the harder paper cover.

Then I used an old sketch painting (I have LOADS of discarded paintings just laying around), and glued it to the cover (with just good ol' glue stick).
The painting is just acrylic on sketch paper (thinner than watercolour), so the cover is quite floppy and has a nice plastic finish. The paint was layed quite thick in some areas and textured, which makes it super nice to touch.
Size is slightly smaller and thinner than a B6, but bigger than A6. Here's a comparison with my A5 journal:

Okay that's it! Bye! 💙
#there is some mild staining on the paper edges (due to time and storage) but otherwise the pages are like new#they are not super thick - juuuuust slightly above print paper (i'd guess about 90-95g) and very smooth so not great for watery paint#but it's perfect for everything else!#great to have it on hand!!! the floppiness is SO nice - i'm actually pretty happy with it#i have a lot of loose paper and unused pages from old sketchbooks and such. i might gather them all and make more OR one thick book#the first i did was quite a few years ago and i bound several different types of paper together (with coloured paper too)#it's a hard cover and quite thick a6. only a couple pages left - i used it waaay more than i thought i would#the binding on this one isn't the greatest BUT it's enough. next one i'll actually take my time and make it properly#darya does art

The River Has Roots
poetic fable-like novella, reimagining of the twa sisters
about two inseparable sisters who spend their days singing to the willow trees on the banks of a magical river that flows out of faerie
when one rejects a human suitor to instead be with her fey lover, he takes revenge, threatening to separate them forever
arc from netgalley, out march 4!
#the river has roots#amal el-mohtar#a beautiful and slightly bittersweet story! I really enjoyed it#it's super short but great vibes#I would have loved to know more about the grammar-magic! Though what was there was certainly enough to be fascinating#and the fey realm - though the sort of incomprehensible nature of it does add to the story#sapphic books#(f/nb)
