I feel that to me the biggest weakness of Nosferatu was... Orlok himself.

To the extent that Eggers wanted to focus on him as Ellen's shadow in jungian terms, he kind of works. But that's not all R.E. wanted. He wanted this to work as a simple fairytale too, as a demon lover story. He was even inspired by Wuthering Heights. On that level? The movie utterly fails.

It fails FOR ME obviously. There will always be those who will fall for this motif regardless of the execution and I'm glad for them. But my main problem was in terms of Orlok x Ellen is the complete lack of emotional complexity. While I DID take an interest in Eggers' chosen separatism between Ellen's love and between her carnal desire, I strongly dislike that Orlok himself is just appetite. It may fit the 'vampire' but it doesn't make for a good love triangle.

Eggers did not draw some Heathcliff-esque figure. At no point does Orlok feel like a character that has any kind of depth to make me feel invested. Like, Heathcliff was a lot of things and became a part of the cycle of abuse and destruction himself, but his bitterness and his spite felt real, because the reader understood both their intensity and where they came from: The way class, race and exoticism where involved in the way his character was perceived, treated and abused since he was a child. His feelings for Cathy too and her feelings for him, the ways in which these two needed each other and were intertwined... they were palpable.

Orlok has... nothing. He was given a vague backstory of having made a deal for immortality (therefore he did not accept death and nature). He has wealth. His covenant is based on the patriarchal status quo. Other than that? He has no personality whatsoever. Eggers did not do himself any favours by mentioning WH as an inspiration and allowing me to compare Nosferatu to it because Orlok feels as hollow as the husk he has become in the final shot of the movie.

I genuinely think the Heathcliff guy has cracked the code. Newspaper comics are subject to a constant demand to be as inoffensive as possible, and no one can make a credible argument that you've offended them if no one can explain what it is that you are doing.
