Treasures of Ruin Headcanons

It is not uncommon to find stone figures of Ting-Lu marking settlements in northern Paldea. In ancient times, the custom was to put coins in the domed vessel atop its head, typically whenever one arrived or departed the village. The reasoning is not well understood. Some scholars believe they were merely respectful offerings. Others speculate that the coins were intended to weigh Ting-Lu's head down, to prevent it from escaping its shrine and ravaging the earth.

Paldea is home to a proverb, often translated as 'melt the sand and leave nowhere to stand'. It cautions against the ruinous effects of jealousy or envy, and likely traces back to Chi-Yu's origins. Both in Paldea and its surrounding regions, envy is associated with fire and heat.

It is commonly believed that flowers and fruit trees do not grow in the woods surrounding Grasswither Shrine, but this is not true. As any local will tell you, the fruit grows quickly, but rots quicker still. Wild pokémon do not eat it.

Paldean fables warn children against walking alone in heavy snow. If they see a snowman, they must ignore it - especially if it seems to be waving at them. Chien-Pao is the most playful of the Treasures of Ruin; while your eyes fix on the snow figure, you may miss the sheet of ice descending from above.

The exact nature of the Treasures of Ruin is poorly understood in modern Paldea. While their existence is accepted, there is dispute over the extent of their abilities and the level of destruction attributed to them. Some academics argue that they were only symbols of the bloodshed and environmental discord under the ancient monarch's rule, later elevated to legends via oral storytelling. However, more recent research supports the Treasures' historic reputation. A newly-published geological analysis of Grasswither Shrine detected elevated levels of heavy metals in the soil, with no clear source but the shrine itself.

Ornamental metal vessels, often known as 'worry bowls', are found in many houses across Paldea. They are a common gift for children, who are told to write their fears down on scraps of paper and put them in the vessel to be rid of them. Some believe that these bowls are styled after the vessel on Ting-Lu's head. The protective nature of the bowls is at odds with Ting-Lu's generally negative reputation, which may suggest that the Treasures were not always a symbol of evil in Paldean culture.

In old Paldean writings, frostbite is often referred to as 'sword touch' or the 'bite of the cat', thought to be physical evidence of Chien-Pao's ruin on the body. Even in modern Paldea, children are encouraged to wrap up warmly against the cold, lest 'the cat nip their nose'.

This morning sucked. Woke up at 7 on less than 5 hours of sleep to bake over 50 Eccles cakes. Didn’t have like half my ingredients. Bought more only to realise I still didn’t have them all. Burnt myself on the syrupy filling. Printer died on me as I was trying to get a printing job done. Forgot to have lunch I was so excited. Locked my car key in the boot. Waited an hour in the sun in all black to make sure I didn’t get a parking ticket whilst trying to get said key out. Got stuck in traffic for half an hour only to find I’d just moved under 100 metres. Accidentally had the thermostat cranked up to 40C the whole journey. All of this, just to get to a screening.

Then when I got there….

Shrimp emotions. The atmosphere was incredible. Got there 3 hours early. Immediately bonded with people, and it just felt so warm and exciting. I passed round the Eccles cakes in its little (very large) Antichrist basket. We all counted down with the timer waiting for the episodes to start. The episodes were amazing, and I have to thank @neil-gaiman for making this season come true - it was everything I hoped for and more, and I think that’ll be the case for pretty much everyone. I wouldn’t trade this experience for the world, even if I had to live through this morning 20x over.

Trust me when I say you’re not prepared for season 2. No one is.

y'know... i don't often like thinking back to that time, but i just had a thought.

what if schneider's statement wasn't just that? ofc he did address the things that were going on at the time, but part of me feels it's something more. he never explicitly said these words, but what if his statement was a quiet plea for till to come home?

y'know what makes gen's crying moment in the ending even more meaningful

is that gen went from being a sceptic

to this

time machines are not even achievable in our present time, but gen's faith in senku and science is unshakeable. "full of unthinkable things" indeed yet he believes in senku regardless

and what gets me more, is that the ultimate faith in humanity and its sciences is the core of byakuya's personality too

and gen's faith in senku and his expression parallels this conversation between byakuya and lillian

so here is dr stone's final and most important message– that science means perseverance, because humanity will never give up.

senku isn't great because he's a genius. he's great because he doesn't give in to his failures. he keeps going, because he believes in science. (and gen is the one who narrates this message in the end. oh gen asagiri u will always be loved!)

rewatching s1 and in ep2 w*ndigo, dean makes a joke about not bringing provisions into the woods just to pull out a bag of peanut butter m&m’s and stick with me here, it’s why the later seasons’ “goofy dean” loses me

this moment is clearly a joke but if you think about it too much, it also makes some sense; a family size bag of peanut m&m’s is calorie dense and even the high sugar is good to keep you moving which they need on an overnight hunt. it also shows how due to their upbringing, they’ve had to eat lower quality food, things they always had access to that was cheap and also in bulk

what does dean eating ghost pepper jerky then tipping water on himself exist for other than to be a cringy joke? what does smelling old chinese food, testing to see if it's still good then shaking his head with cabbage hanging out his mouth when it isn't serve? it's just to make him look stupid and contrast sam's healthy/clean diet (and superiority but that’s another conversation) which has always existed but it used to be nuanced and natural

we see dean as a child give up the food he wanted to eat so sam could eat it. (“i’m sick of spaghetti-os,” “you’re the one who wanted them,” … “i want lucky charms!” “… there’s only enough for one bowl and i haven’t had any yet!” proceeds to give them to sam, 1x18) we know he hustled and stole food to ensure sam ate. (“so, what’d he take?” “get this- peanut butter and bread.” 9x07)

we also see throughout the early seasons dean teasing sam about his salad or healthy choice while he eats some form of burger or other fast food (or notably, cheerfully eating prison food that sam won’t touch, 2x19). it's typical sibling teasing but it also shows that it isn't new for sam to eat like that and for dean to know he eats like that

sam being picky isn't just a character trait they chose for him, it's a result of how dean raised him; he raised him to like and want healthy food and be food secure enough to reject food he didn't want

but dean eats anything he is given and seeks out unhealthy - cheap, plentiful, filling - food

he is the opposite of picky to the point of it being a consistent bit; they show him multiple times eating when it's socially frowned upon to do so eg. questioning a grieving victim when they're trying to be discreet (1x14, 2x15, 2x18)

a similar moment to the chinese food is in 4x19; dean wakes up in the car while sam brushes his teeth outside and is hungry. sam says there's a sandwich in the backseat, dean smells it and recoils bc it's an old tuna sandwich. the moment is funny on its own but it also exists as a comparison of their lives to adam's; he has a loving mother, goes to school and importantly, a steady stable childhood

it’s a joke with a purpose

it also supports dean's food insecurity; he wakes up and is immediately hungry, enough to complain about it and seek out food before anything else

dean is always hungry bc he never has access to nutritionally rich foods bc he got used to using the money he earned to buy sam's more expensive food. he got used to his cheaper, denser foods and grew up with (and continues to live with) intermittent access to said foods. think of how long it takes to drive from one state to another; how many hours it can take to see another town that offers food, if you arrive at a reasonable enough time for anything to be open. also think how they can’t keep any food beyond what fits in an esky; nothing that needs defrosting, nothing can be heated up. it’s bags and jars and take out for as long as they can trust it

then they get the bunker which has its own kitchen

dean even describes himself as "nesting" when he decorates his room, something he hasn't had since he was four years old, and he uses said kitchen to cook a burger from scratch that he is proud of. he is food secure for the first time in his life and it shows in how often he cooks for both himself and sam

so these moments where they have him acting goofy regarding food are no longer character driven and only exist as a joke which is why they come across as cringy and out of character compared to similar earlier moments

a lot of my issues with dean's characterisation started when they introduced the bunker. the argument can and is made that the reason these jokes happen is bc he feels safe in the bunker, that bc he now has a home he can relax and unmask but that still doesn't feel sufficient. they crank up these sillier moments for both of them, giving them a sort of playing house comedy vibe of two roommates with completely different personalities but it doesn't feel like an authentic progression. it feels forced; an attempt at humour for humour's sake

food stopped being an informed part of their characters and their trauma and instead became flanderised; sam is the judgy vegetarian health nut and dean is his borderline slovenly carnivore counterpart

(this might be dream drop distance erasure but) i still think kingdom hearts II was the gayest kingdom hearts game. no exaggeration whatsoever it's basically soriku: the game.

sora literally woke up from a fucking cosmic coma and was like "where's riku" and just went around to a dozen fucking worlds screaming "RIKU WHERE ARE YOU" at the top of his lungs and bothering everyone in the vicinity about riku's whereabouts (when they had no ever-loving clue who tf riku was) and then he kept getting bummed when he was roped into helping these people but it didn't help him find riku and then he was mad as hell shouting at donald and goofy in front of mulan and li shang's salads "SEE!!! i should've been with riku" because he felt guilty about being separated from riku and then eventually he reunites with the girl he's in love with (citation needed) and was like "oh cool! nice to see you! glad you made it! *gentle hug*" but then finds out riku has been physically turned into some scary-looking old guy but it's still riku and so he falls to his knees sobbing and holding riku's hand and crying about he looked everywhere for riku and how he's gonna find a way to save him and turn him back into himself and that riku's heart is still riku's so it's all good with him and then him and riku fight the big bad guy together and end up on some dark ass lonely ass beach apparently for eternity but they're both like "yeah this is fine because we're together :)" and they just keep fucking smiling and chilling but then kairi saves them and sora's like "we'll go together ♥︎" and pulls riku up out of the darkness that plagued him (!!!) and into the light (!!!!!!!) and they go home together. also that's just the obvious as hell surface level basic gameplay stuff. i didn't even talk nuance.

all this and you're like wow it really can't get gayer!! but then in kingdom hearts III they combine keyblades for a special edition pride month collab complete with rainbows and the paopu aka soulmate fruit. but sora is in love with kairi allegedly so what gives

It kind of annoys me when people talk about polin as an entity instead of two separate characters who have a life beyond each other. Yesterday nicola posted a pic apparently from bton set and people started with polin filming talks. I mean we want polin scenes too but that doesn’t mean whatever scenes they have in the upcoming season are with each other only. Their equations with other members are equally important. Like Colin’s scenes with violet and bromance with ben are some of my personal favorites. Peneloise ship has a big fanbase of its own . Also there is colin eloise, colin with gregory and hyacinth and the only scene he had with kate. There’s so much to explore but some people only want them to have sex all the time it seems. Its like they come in a package for them. Even if one if them quits the show, I don’t want the production to write off the other one like they did with daphne or JB’s busy schedule leading to less screenspace for kate.

agreed. they're such interesting characters on their own and honestly a lot of what i want to see in s4 (peneloise, abc wives, colin and portia, colin and benedict) isn't even polin-focused.

don't get me wrong, i would LOVE to see polin married life but i'm hoping that's not all. even kanthony in s3 left me feeling unsatisfied, with short scenes here and there of them kissing/being in love but very few moments of actual substance. not saying i want some insane drama or something, but even just a deeper conversation between anthony and colin could've utilised his character so well.

colin and penelope are two different characters, who are great seperately, and great together. imo its the same people who call polin 'production favourites' despite the fact colin is treated like crap. idk they're not a package deal.
