the west wing is the best show ever because you wouldn’t expect to come out of a hard-hitting, critically acclaimed political drama with the ultimate found family trope, right? and yet the president is a complete nerd, his wife is scary and the top in their relationship, the president and his chief of staff are Dad 1 and Dad 2, the deputy chief of staff and his assistant are in a years-long emotional affair and everyone knows it but them, the communications director is grumpy as hell and you love him so much, the press secretary is tall, hot and awesome, the deputy communications officer is the gay son and the president’s aide is the human personification of a pleasure to have in class. and they’re all family and love each other very much :)

A major problem in writing Leo: having the perfect word but knowing Leo is too much of a dumb bitch to use 'exacerbate' in his internal dialogue.

So weirdly enough the flowers on Rose's shirt appear to be the Stewartia pseudocamellia (notable here is the clear camellia-like profile) which is in fact a flower called shara[沙羅] in Japanese, like the name of his zanpakutou, Kinshara[金沙羅]: "Gold Shala." But from what I had always gathered the zanpakutou had a lot of clear references to a different species of slower entirely, the Shorea robusta also shara[沙羅] aka the sal/sāla/shala tree.

So to start, in Buddhism the sal tree of scripture is arguably more mythical than real, and so it's associated with the former in Japan, but natively in India it's associated with the latter, which would seem to account for the confusion, except that the actual design of Kinshara clearly evokes the long whip-like vine shape of the Indian Shala rather than the Japanese pseudo-camellia, which just grows on normal tree branches.

I kinda wonder if Kubo didn't just google it and grab whatever looked good without any regard for them being the same/different flower(s) or not.

Kensei's shirt seems like a pretty straight forward reference to his name Muguruma[六車] meaning "6 Car/Vehicle," something Kubo used to base his bosozoku gimmick off of in TBtP, so the 6 bars just look like stylized bikes or cars in a sort of motorcade.

It is also, perhaps coincidentally... the daoist bagua trigram ☷ for kun[坤]: "Earth" (as in the opposite of "heaven" but it's elemental association is actually [地]: "earth" but in the dirt and soil sense) But incidentally the Earth trigram is associated with the epithet Liù duàn[六斷]: "Six Fragments/Sever(ed things)" and the traditional chinese character duàn[斷] simplifies to [断] which is the same kanji in tachikaze[断地風]: "Sever (the) Earth Wind." The Six is there, The Earth is there, the Sever is there...

Again I'm not even sure this was intentional but it does happen to link the name Muguruma[六車] to ☷ and [地] to Liù duàn[六斷] the sword Tachikaze[断地風] even if it took a seemingly improbable game of 6 degrees from such an innocuous design, of just 6 lines, to get there.

Do you have any particular characterization for Splinter in your sep au that you’re able to share?

personally i see him as a little more active in his sons' lives than he is in canon (donnie stepped up with money and resources that allowed them to live comfortably, and without his presence in the family they have to be a lot more careful to conserve what they have, which requires him to be a much more active presence) but he's still withdrawn from them enough for raph to still have some of the issues he has in canon; after all of the trauma he went through leading up to the sudden children thrusted upon him, he struggles a lot with his mental health, which is something raph at times directly had to feel responsible for. it's probably not good to feel like you're co-parenting with one of your children, but that's kind of what ended up happening!!

raph and splinter are TECHNICALLY closer than they were in canon, and a lot more communicative, but i would say their relationship is a lot more complicated in a lot of ways. it's why raph is a lot more serious here, because even more than in canon he's kind of always had to be an adult. he didn't get the opportunity to be a kid at all because they always had to fight to survive. (it creates both great exhaustion, and intense protectiveness. he is EXTREMELY overprotective of mikey because of it, while splinter is a lot more lenient and encouraging to let him have some independence)

The thing is about Foolish, is that he puts his whole heart into everything. Commissioned to build a giant mansion? He'll go crazy trying to make sure the entire roof is perfect and missing blocks are replaced. Wants to add a chandelier to his fancy ceiling? He'll spend three hours losing his mind figuring out how to proportion it so it looks the absolute best he can. Roleplay an immortal suddenly discovering death? He'll tear your heart out with his questions and confusion. BadBoyHalo needs someone to bounce his craziness off? Sure, let's be the straight man to Bad's 'give me an inch and I'll take several miles' and carry on a country-building arc for a year. Oh, the server god wants a giant statue of himself and he'll give powers? Why not spend three months agonizing over freehanding some wings in survival. Thrown into a new group of people in this valorant 5-stack? He'll be the one with the weird opener that gets everyone talking and enjoying themselves. Given an introverted child? He delves to the deepest part of his understanding of human emotion to figure out how to relate to her and introduce her to making friends and help her come out of her shell. Friend stops by your discord call to say something in his native language? He'll spend a whole year systematically dismantling that language and trying to build his understanding of it from the ground up until he can read (and almost write!) it pretty well. Friends want to do emotional roleplay? He'll showcase his stunning emotional intelligence and find the most moving lines to get his point across. His ability to yes-and is truly incredible.

Sure, he's silly and goofy and loves making noises. But he always throws everything he has into every situation and that's, I think, why everyone he interacts with tends to love him.

Here are the eye colors! After a lot of consideration I’ve decided to officially make these the eye colors. Also this is just how I draw their eyes, I’m completely fine with people just using the darker shade. And thank you so much!!
