the choice between Edward & Jacob is not a question of which relationship is healthier or which partner is best suitable for Bella. neither is correct. neither is best. neither produces a happy ending for Bella. at the end of the day this is still a vampire novel. any choice Bella could make would yield, at best, a bittersweet happily ever after.
if she chooses Edward, she gets the terrifying Breaking Dawn ending: a girl who rejected her call to grow up has hung her love & her eternity on an emotionally stunted partner who hates himself marginally less than he loves her. she's a teen mom with a kid she never wanted who perpetuates the generational trauma passed down from her parents. by keeping this child, the Cullens have set the stage for an uprising/cold war against the Volturi who are likely to take revenge in order to maintain power. Bella is living in a tenuous "dream come true" wrapped in a nightmare & doesn't realize it.
choosing Jacob is the true coming-of-age ending that rips the stitches out of a wound that never fully healed. even if we ignore the fact that she ends up with a man who sexually assaulted her (we must bear in mind Jacob's character is influenced by smeyer's racism, but it did happen), they can't have a secure romantic relationship. based on the high imprinting rate of the pack, Jacob will likely find his imprint in his lifetime & will lose himself to the imprintee. he will no longer be her Jacob. he will inevitably abandon her (whether he wants to or not), & she must reconcile with the reality that she will always be inadequate to Jacob's imprint. & say he never manages to escape the vampires? he will presumably not age for a long time, meaning the relationship Bella always feared with Edward (her being an old grandmother while he stays forever young) remains a possibility. this is the story of a girl who slaps a Band Aid on an open wound & calls herself healed while flinching every time she sees the shadow of the knife that cut her.
if she chooses neither (team therapy), her healing requires her to lose or be at least partially disconnected from everyone she cares about. Bella must spend the rest of her life shut out from one world while never fully existing in her human world ever again. she must always keep secrets. she can never go back home. even in the unlikely event that she manages to escape the Volturi, the threat of being hunted by vampires will never leave her. in addition, she must face her worst fears (aging, losing Edward) while always keeping in mind the immortal life that could have been hers, if only.
even the "healthiest" option produces scars that will never quite heal.
Twilight is a horror. Twilight is a vampire novel. Twilight is gothic. Twilight is fiction. neither Edward nor Jacob is a "bad" choice because neither will give Bella her happily ever after. the choice between Edward & Jacob is simply a matter of which horror story you prefer to read.
#twilight#twilight renaissance#bella swan#the twilight saga#edward cullen#twilight saga#twilight meta#not to be a downer but the edward/jacob feud is silly#i understand this feud will continue in perpetuity because controversy & drama will always garner attention in online spaces etc#but the idea that either of these men will provide the happy story some people in this fandom want is an illusion#because no matter what happens The Twilight Saga still operates in the context of the vampire/gothic genre which by design can't produce#a 100% happy ending.#'oh but it's a YA romance so-' yeah so the black walls get wallpapered. they're still black underneath & nothing changes that#'this story is a romance' and 'this story is a horror story' are two ideas that can coexist.#i wish we were able to debate the choice between Edward & Jacob while still bearing in mind neither choice is wrong#i think this fandom would be a lot less toxic & mean to each other for no fuckin reason but oh well

I mean, no. You also have the option to not watch it. Hope that helps!
I think what’s upsetting me the most about this show is that they’re so worried about upsetting white audiences but they have no problem triggering black trauma with their endless connections to anti blackness. I mean why have the trial turned into a lynching? why make all these callbacks to slavery and racism that obviously make your black audience uncomfortable when you’re going just to avoid talking about it with actors and producers because…white people are going to get upset? As if black people aren’t upset by all the references being made….
They are saying that Armand and Lestat participated in this brutal treatment of Louis and Claudia, lynched them and I’m supposed to just keep on watching afterwards because of what? the white man’s allure?? AMC really dropped the ball on this for me. Disappointing bc this show was phenomenal but the way s2 concludes is just callous. Episode 7 is unwatchable to me bc even with the coven’s death (which is pathetically short in comparison to what Louis and Claudia went through which is more bs but whatever) it feels like there’s no justice in the end. Claudia is dead and Armand and Lestat face no consequences for their participation in her death.
(posting this as it is for a fan vent)
#listen: the ties to slavery and black violence were not invented by the show creators#they're there in the books and serve the narrative purpose to illustrate that EVEN IN LIFE these characters were immoral dirtbags#the very essence of the vampire chronicles is one of immorality and difficult subjects#it's a gothic horror saga#it's supposed to make feel uneasy and see it as What Humanity Would Be Summed Up To If Had No Soul#it's uncomfortable#it also dabs in rape physical/emotional/psychological violence as well as neglect and incest#this is NOT for everyone#and maybe some people would feel more comfortable consuming a different type of media#but do not treat this a motherfucking Shadowhunters where you can stomp your feet pout and cry 'problematic'#and the showrunners have to aquiesce to you Or Else#learn to take accountability for yourself and the media you consume#if this makes you uncomfortable then watch something else#'this horror story that has obvious themes of hierarchical and racial violence is upsetting me!' yeah i assume it would#it's .h o r r o r.

I saw a post about racist Jasper stans bitching bc they’re not able to enjoy shitty J*sper content bc of tags or whatever lol and someone said: “What is there even to enjoy?”. I had to laugh and I thought if you bc it’s so true. Most Jasper content isn’t even that enjoyable. It’s mostly the same boring white-supremacist garbage that I’ve seen before; even the jalice stuff is played out.
The only J*sper content I enjoy is content where he is worshipping Maria, thinking about Maria, talking about Maria, loving Maria, doing anything for Maria tbh. Is that bad? XD I owe it to you and your writing! idk something about a 19/20 year old dumbass confederate falling madly in love with a native brown woman and literally seeing her as a god-like figure as she’s basically handing him his karma for his racist crimes sends me. Ppl act like he was this awesome person before Maria and that it’s her fault he’s gutter trash now with the C*llens but he was gutter trash BEFORE he met Maria. She honestly made him so much better, stronger and MUCH more interesting. She literally created the man these stans thirst over so much. She is the blueprint.
the thing anti-María Jalice stans don't get is, without María, you do not have Jasper. for everything Jasper is, María is the catalyst ❤️
canonically, all we know about Jasper Hale pre-change is 1) he was born in Texas, 2) faked his age to join the Confederate Army* where he became the youngest major in Texas, & 3) was persuasive
beyond that, María made Jasper into the man the fandom adores. you like that he's an empath? guess whose venom made him one. you like that he's a warmonger? guess whose war he fought for. you like that he has a troubled past? guess who put the trouble in it. you like that he's "soft" "empath" "baby" (tbh i don't see it but ok)? guess who made him want to be that way. you like that he's submissive to Alice? guess who broke him in first.
you want Jasper with Alice but wish the María era didn't exist? lol just say you want the hot faceless Confederate to get with the psychic Mississippian & go
as for me, MARÍA ALL DAY BAYBEEEEE
here we have a woman who has suffered all her life at the hands of colonizers. born "1800s or earlier," we can suppose she has firsthand experience with colonization (at least Napoleon's invasion) & lived through Mexico's War of Independence. i.e., she has a deep familiarity with what it means to have your way of life ripped from you by invaders. PLUS she was a victim of Benito's army in the Southern Vampire Wars; her entire coven including her mate was killed.
& despite her losses, she rallied to take back her land & drive out her oppressors. baseline, she is a strong, cunning, powerful indigenous woman with a deep love for her community and her people. HOT
now let's look at Jasper, a bright leader in the Civil War who suffered defeat at the hands of the Union army. yes, María changed him. but did she force him to stay? to go to war? the newborn vamp with the strength & speed to overcome a "grown" vamp chose not to do so. the empath with the power to make anyone disregard him chose not to use it. some say María was "abusive" & "manipulative," but few acknowledge that Jasper had a choice.
why didn't Jasper leave? because he's submissive to anyone more powerful than him. because he was a loser. because the Southern Vampire Wars gave him a second chance at victory. because "empath" or no, he wanted to play war & win.
that's what's compelling about Jasper/María. as wrong as Jasper was for fighting for the Confederacy, he believed he was fighting for the same thing as she. he saw his way of life destroyed by "invaders" & fought back. it's a sick & twisted parallel between oppressor & oppressed that becomes subverted as their relationship goes on... & one that can heal them both.
María's experience with colonizers gives her a visceral picture of what it means to be oppressed... but her relationship with Jasper gives her the victory & emotional reflection she needs to move on. Jasper's military training gives him the hunger & knowledge for war... but his "curse" of empathy provides him with the tools he needs to recognize & address the horrors of his problematic past & move on.
tbh, i find Jasper & María are perfectly suited for a delicious character-driven narrative. Maria's story is that of a traumatized indigenous woman on a path from colonization to decolonization, & the sacrifices & destruction she endures realize that vision. Jasper's story is that of a troubled man on the path from self-hate to self-love, & what it means to undo the societal teachings/traumas & forge a life of empathy & forgiveness.
& that is something Alice alone can never give Jasper.
tl;dr all hail Queen María
#*non-americans: the Civil War (1861-1865) was a battle between Northern (Union) & Southern (Confederate) states...#...over whether to permit slavery in new U.S. territories.#maría my beloved#anon i'm glad you like my María writings (when i used to post them)!#anon thank you so much for giving me this ask and allowing me to just rave about María you are so wonderful <3333 thank you come again#twilight#twilight renaissance#the twilight saga#jasper hale#jasria#jasría#asks#(disclaimer: i don't hate jasper. i do not think of him. no hate to jalice stans either. lichrally i do not care. i simply love maría)#god i love her so much#most underrated character of the whole saga tbh#honestly if i didn't have this rewrite going on i would DEFINITELY LOVE to take a crack at writing The Jasría Story#i just see this gorgeous gothic horrific bloody strangely uplifting & bittersweet vampire novel#it's got death and sex and horror and blood and everything Twilight should've been but Worse (and Better)#ok fuck it fuck it FUCK IT I'M DOING IT. okay. i'm up to episode five now, so, by increasingly popular demand lol:
my initial thoughts about old gods of appalachia
i think it's really smart in what it relays as "appalachian horror," because this is actually what The Appalachian Gothic is supposed to give
what i mean is it's not just like the usual spoopy mythical forest/"don't investigate the noises in the woods" stuff alone. dgmw, obviously i love the urban legends
but the gothic of an area or time period needs cultural elements tied in to really make it chilling, and this does it well. it stands out in the way that it incorporates the genuine horrors of humanity in appalachia with the supernatural element everyone is drawn to about these mountains. it's very creatively done
like in the barlo, kentucky saga i am currently listening to, it's the dangerous coal mines and the near-possessed preacher turning all hellfire n brimstone at the behest of the haints. it preys (i use this word positively here) on this mix of very specific but common fears, both existential and otherwise, held by residents of the appalachian south. love it
as an aside, i love the narrator's accent because it sounds like mine :') a lifetime of code switching means mine isn't quite as strong unfortunately, but our pronunciation habits and colloquialisms are next to identical, so there manages to be this like warm and nostalgic feeling to it, too
because it's honestly so nice to hear my accent and my family's accent as a critical part of a superb story being told, and not just as a vehicle for mockery and stereotypes :')))
all in all... it is Good Shit

🕸๋࣭ ⭑‧₊˚🕷‧₊˚Hello everyone and welcome to the De Romanus Coven 2024 Halloween event Preview! ‧₊˚🕷‧₊˚๋࣭ ⭑🕸
This year our prompts are inspired by the seventh art, by horror cinema, as our beloved Marius, the character to whom our coven is most dedicated, had a brief career as a filmmaker. The prompts are not only titles of more or less famous films in the horror genre, but have been chosen from sub-genres of horror culture contained within the Vampire Chronicles. We have tried to cite all the genres contained in the books themselves, with the last day of the event, dedicated to Anne Rice, citing the first novel in the Vampire Chronicles, and also the 1994 masterpiece film that resulted from it.We would like to make it clear that you do not need to know the films cited, they are just themes you can draw inspiration from. If you know the film to which the prompt is dedicated, you can be inspired by it, for the creation of any artistic content, or let yourself be carried away by the theme that the title holds. We have tried to quote the films as internationally as possible, for horror, the unknown and fear, belong to any culture, just as Anne Rice's books have been translated into so many languages and have become international. The event is dedicated to all the characters of the Vampire Chronicles and the more terrifying side of the saga, which remains a pillar in the Gothic horror genre that revolutionized the figure of the vampire.
You can submit any kind of work:
-fanart -moodboard -fanfiction -meta
-analysis -poems etc. What we ask, and has always been our one true inviolable rule, that love be brought and given to Anne Rice's work and her characters. And another thing, we value words and their use. Our coven wants to bring fun and love to the fandom, so we ask that you choose carefully and thoughtfully the words you include in your work.On pain of exclusion from the event.
⛥Thank you all and see you soon!⛥
-Below you will find all the prompts from the Halloween event:

people bitch about the bunker and the way the late seasons lose the nomadic element that was so vital and inherent to the kripke era but have you considered. the bunker as a sound stage for the denouement of chuck’s winchester saga. the world becoming smaller and smaller as the narrative flattens and collapses in on itself. dolls in a dollhouse. the gothic ancestral house and sitcom interior all in one, equal parts warm and bleak, simultaneously labyrinthine and claustrophobic.
the bunker invites its own sort of horror within the broader context of the metanarrative: you’re too distracted by the comforts of the home you’ve craved all your life to notice that it’s just set dressing.

New to The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice?
Here's the order of books that should be followed if you are interested in immersing yourself in this gothic and fantastic saga.
TW: Keep in mind that this is a series of gothic horror novels, so, many of the stories carry dark fiction which may be triggering for some readers.
The reading order is basically the publication order of the books.
Vittorio The Vampire can be read at any time after The Queen of the Damned since it's not directly connected to any other book.
The Lives of the Mayfair Witches trilogy can be an additional reading that provides more context for the witch/vampire crossover books, although it's not strictly necessary at all.
Finally, these are the books that i think are the most important ones to read in case you don't want to or can't read the whole novel series.

*the news reporters eyes swirl with purples and greens in a hypnotizing pattern as it promptly turns around and leaves in the direction of the Herris Wheel ™, mechanical shark dog trailing behind*
*the camera man-thing hurries to leave after them, saying nothing to the two. You didn't even notice it until it started to move*
*Kremy and Magnolia are left alone, people avoiding them because of the threatening aura that surrounds them. The feeling of being watched eventually leaves after a few moments*
*If they were to look for the news reporter they would find no evidence of it and it's companions ever existing in the carnivale. Somehow the carnivale seems lighter*
(apologies for the very sketchy look, I'm in a bit of a rush)
