see I miss stupid ‘filler’ character driven episodes of TV because they offer opportunities like these— like this is a very silly episode but Utena’s behavior in it is so revealing because she’s being SO oblivious and kind of insensitive to Anthy’s feelings here.

The comedy of the situation makes it even MORE revealing— Utena LITERALLY walks a day in Anthy’s shoes and instead of feeling empathy and sadness just starts immediately being like ‘damn your life sucks can we switch back’

Matthew Rhys in the Americans is some of the most incredible accent work I’ve ever seen. He’s welsh and a welsh first language speaker mastery of tiny shades in “‘neutral” American accents so that they all sound like different people from different areas while still remaining distinctly bicoastal or subtly midwestern or southern is soooo good. And it’s essential for his character - he’s trying to be dozens of unmemorable people with unmemorable accents, which are kind of hard to place and yet distinctly grounded.
