Sorry if this has already been asked before but as a general statement do you feel like the trope of having mobility aids doubling up as weapons in a fantasy story is ok? I’m disabled myself so I have a lot of disabled characters in my story so there’s a wide variety of mobility aids. Since a lot of characters fight in the story because of the genre I was thinking of making mobility aids weapons (cane as a magic staff or like prosthetics with built in powers etc) but I’m not sure if it falls into the category of ‘character is disabled but it’s actually their superpower!!!’ because I want to avoid that trope at all costs. Hope this makes sense to you since communication isn’t a strong point of mine. Love your blog btw:)

I really feel like it depends. It can be done well and respectfully, but in my experience it usually isn't.

If you're a mobility aid user writing about the aids that you're using, you can do whatever you want! For my deeper thoughts that are too long:

The main issue that I have with the "magic aids as weapons" is that often it feels like the author doesn't actually like the aid because it's "too boring" and thus wants to "improve" it by making a cane into a wizard staff that shoots fireballs or whatever. But I don't feel like that's a good way to go about it at all. Mobility aids are cool in itself! They allow use to be more mobile! Why do they need to be made into something else?

The something else part is also what bothers me a lot around magic aids, aids as weapons, all that. Like the old "replacing a wheelchair with an animal" thing. Why not have a wheelchair? Why not a walking cane instead of a staff, you know? It sometimes feels like the author tries to distance whatever they're writing about from disabled people and our actual experiences because they're "too boring to fit their fantasy story". Like it could be done effectively, but it usually really isn't.

To finally get to the combat part of the question, it again depends (...sorry). If the character with a cane has to fight using it, then I do find it weird, I guess. "Doing cool explosive stuff" shouldn't be a requirement for a disabled character to be included, especially because a lot of disabled people can't do the things that writers want them to do! Sometimes we are weak and unsteady and fragile. Fighting isn't for everyone, and I feel like that's where some of the annoying fantasy tropes appear.

"Hm, my blind character can't fight because they're blind.. oh they have a superpower that lets them 'see'! solved!"

"Hmm, I don't know how to include a wheelchair user… I'll give them a Magic Mecha Exoskeleton, now they can fight!"

"Hm, real life prosthetics seem inconvenient. I'll just make them Magical so they're just like meat limbs but with a gun!"

...and all these kinds of "solutions" that make one wonder if the author even wants to have an actually disabled character. It's not even that the disability is a superpower, it's more that it's non-existent. Sometimes the better solution is to have us in other roles and not make us do things that our disabilities prevent us from doing, which fighting can fall under.

If the above isn't what's going on, then I think it comes down to how the whole thing is even supposed to work. Are the in-universe rules for magic centered around the idea that the Body makes magic? In this case, it could be interesting to have a character who uses a mobility aid and considers it a part of their body to be able to use it in a magical way. Because a lot of people do consider their cane or wheelchair an extension of them, so it could be actually interesting to see it validated by the magic system. But if it's like, "anything could be used" and then every character with a mobility aid ends up using their aid for that, that's... somewhat weird. It does feel like reducing the character to their disability if abled character 1 has a spell book, abled character 2 has a magic necklace, but the disabled character has their disability aid as their magic weapon. To use the example that you did, if the character's prosthetic is the only way they can use magic, I do think that's weird, because like. why… it's both reductive and "disability as a superpower". But if they can use magic through, let's say, both of their legs, and one of them happens to be a prosthetic, then I think that's cool.

I also believe that it depends on what kind of weapon you are talking about at the end of the day - in real life, mobility aids are already treated as potential weapons. I'm under the impression that no one would assume that a walking cane could cast a spell, but people do very much think of a cane as a potential tool to fight with, of a prosthetic as a potential bomb, of a wheelchair as a potential way to smuggle something illegal. I have very much seen and heard of situations where a disabled person wasn't allowed to enter somewhere because their aid was seen as a threat - you don't want to make more people think that this is a reasonable conclusion to come to. If you want to go for it without doing any kind of retrospect on that, I would keep it as a fantasy thing.

Sukuna gets reincarnated without a vessel (dont ask me how it just happens ok) and to everyone’s surprise, he volunteers to be an instructor at jujutsu high

he says its to “make these pathetic kids somewhat decent sorcerers so they dont ruin the name of jujutsu”

for whatever reason, the higher ups assign him a spot among the teachers at the school

imagine your shock when this 1000 year old 7 foot tall motherfucker shows in the middle of your class to introduce himself as the new teacher

you’d heard about his whole situation but you didn’t expect him to show up in the middle of a lesson

you attempt to shoo him away but he doesn’t even move (i mean what did you expect really?) and you’re forced to end class early

weirdly enough he keeps a hand clamped over his stomach the entire exchange?? you chalk it down to a stomach ache or something (that night you do wonder if curses, or er, the king of curses, even get physical pains)

ok so before i get into the whole thing lemme just-

in my head, the tummy mouth has the humour of a middle school boy and the self control of the dog from ‘absolutely anything’

you see him the next day in the staff room

hes wearing a starched white shirt (it accommodates all his four arms and you question how he got one made in a single day) and a pair of fitted slacks, looking WAY too good for a curse

you realise you’ve been staring through the glass window if the staff room and finally enter

only to be greeted by a LOUD wolf whistle followed by a “OOOOH HEY HOT THANG” in the deepest, raspiest, most demonic ass voice you’ve ever heard

sukuna looks like he wants to kill himself.

he gets up and leaves the room immediately

you hear the a faint “NO GO BACK AND FLIRT WITH THEM YOU WIMP ASS HOE” in the same demonic voice as he stalks away

and you’re standing there

Sukuna has leaped up from his chair, a mixture of embarrassment and murderous rage on his face

“Well it just so happens that the mouth on my stomach is sentient, and extremely vulgar. Although i’m sure you noticed the latter.”

his voice is a wonderful contrast to that of his tummy mouth

deep, melodic and smooth

thankfully the students enter at that moment saving you from any awkwardness

what you have recently come to identify as Sukuna’s tummy mouth stays blissfully quiet throughout the class and shockingly enough the silence on the belly front continues throughout the day as you discuss lesson plans with your ridiculously hot coworker

that night as you’re getting ready for bed, you remember the exchange between Sukuna and his appendage (specifically the part about Sukuna thinking you’re hot) and a mischievous idea forms in your brain (hey gojo satoru’s influence was bound to kick in at some point)

the next day you leave the top few buttons of your work shirt undone and put on some of the pheromone perfume you got as a gag gift in an (what you presume to be potentially successful) effort to rile Sukuna up (lets be real you think hes pretty damn hot too)

clap yourself on the back for that one bestie because the second you enter the staff room, Sukuna’s eyes nearly bulge out of his skull and the tummy mouth starts BARKING

and drooling apparently (how do you know? well maybe because the front of sukuna’s pristine white dress shirt is now sopping wet)

i hit 4000 on here today and its like. kind of crazy and makes me really happy n emotional idk i havent even had this blog for 2 years yet and i have really met such wonderful friends on here, people i'm really thankful to have in my life and talk to every day.

Having this blog and being in this fandom has also done something so special for me in terms of recapturing that fandom feeling i had as a teenager. Posting without worry of cringe, being self indulgent and unafraid to share it and getting to see others enjoy it with me. To experience that feeling of creating hand in hand with friends and talented mutuals....reading fic and being excited for updates, drawing art of the fic, having fic written off my art, drawing friends aus, getting involved in fandom projects and ask games and meme fills and fests etc, talking concepts for hours and hours in a way i really have not done on such a large scale since i was literally a kid....it really has been so fun and so special and needed in whats been a pretty mentally taxing time in life.

There are a number of creeos in the mansion, all with different disabilities, mental illnesses/disorders, etc

That being said, there are usually plenty of fidget toys, nice things for you to touch and feel with that aren't the worst textures in the world, and I also like to think that after a while, Slender had a "cool down" room put into the mansion

Said cool down room is a dark, quiet room for anyone to go when feeling overstimulated, feeling anxious, or just needs a break

It has plenty of cozy resting spots, pillows, a huge pillar designed to look like a lava lamp and you even have the option to play soft music if you would like

There is usually only 1 or 2 people in the room, so it's never too crowded

And tonight was one of those nights where you just needed to be in a quiet space

It was one of the mansions monthly get togethers, where everyone came into the dining room and feasted upon lots of delicious food

There was something there for everyone, and at first, you were really enjoying yourself!

But after you finished your food and had talked to a few of your friends, you kind of just mingled to yourself

And as time passed, you began to get more and more overwhelmed

There were so many people, and too many noises and the amount of smells wanted to make you puke

Eventually it began to feel like your clothes were too tight and you couldn't breathe

You began to stim as discretely as you could (whether it be quietly vocally stimming, or trying to slowly physically stim is up to you!)

You were certain that if anyone talked to you, you would end up either crying or snapping at them

Jeff noticed, and pulled you aside "hey, you ok? You look a little nervous"

You shook your head and tried to stop the tears from falling

"Is it ok if I touch your hand?" He asks

You nod

He holds your hand and begins to lead you to the cool down room

Once there he sits down on a bean bag and pats the spot next to him for you to do the same

You sit and stare at the floor, trying to calm yourself down

"Do you want me to leave you alone?" Jeff says in a hushed tone

You shake your head and continue staring at the floor

He gets a blanket and wraps you in it, holding you close to him and sheilding your eyes from the outside world

His cool skin is nice on your warm eyes

Jeff is an asshole, but you were thankful he cared about you enough to do this

Like previously mentioned, there is a "cool down room" in the mansion (go read the first few bullets of Jeff's part if you would like more info)

It is one of your favorite rooms, so you find yourself in there quite often

Toby, also being on the autism spectrum, also stays in there from time to time

You've helped him through numerous meltdowns and panic attacks, and he is eternally greatful for you

So when he wondered into the room to you with a very frantic look on your face and constantly fidgeting, stimming, covering your ears, etc (up to you and your personal experiences!) he knew what was happening

Normally he doesn't like to be bothered when he's in this state, so he decides to ask you a few questions

"Are you ok?" "Do you want me to stay?" "Do you need me to do anything for you?"

After you answer all of these questions, he is either sitting next to you, trying to comfort you or he is sitting on the other end of the room comforting you from afar

If he is next to you, he is holding you in his arms, quietly rocking back and forth with you

If he is opposite to you, he is offering you water, snacks, and stim toys

Either way, you end up getting through it (as tough as it was) and thanking him for staying

He of course, is quick to tell you that you can always come hang out with him if you ever need or want to

You end up spending the rest of the day together, foraging in the woods, eating weird foods or just staying in the cool down room

You wrap up in nice blankets and falling asleep

Its just so cozy in there, you can't help it!

- who is in the federation of heros? What founded the federation? Are they powered like cellbit?

- how is cellbit one of the first few born? I feel theres a science experiment plot caught in this and he broke containment. I wonder if he found this out due to being able to scare himself, and that fear immediately projecting to others, making THEM just as scared. Id imagine hed be diagnosed with severe paranoia/etc and then like. Oh SHIT its not. That. Oh fuck.

- what was that leadup that made him a supervillain? Something so minuscule yet so big as fear, to be considered one of the high villains of the city is insane. Some people would probably laugh it off an say physical destruction was scarier than mental, until they see what he actually does.

- who did he murder?????? I wonder if it was someone who defied the "everyones fears projected back to them" ability. Someone unaffected by this, like maybe their own ability counteracted it. One of the federations lower ranked heros attacked... as a citizen... i feel theres more than meets the eye here..... but of course it ended with murder. I feel there could be done with something of luzu and his look alike there.

- i still keep thinking about breaking dawn and how forever is also considered richas's dad, and just thinking about it being kinda switched in this scenario. Cellbit walked into forevers life again an now richas has another dad to annoy the piss out of. Though i do feel him an jaiden would be at each others throats in investigation. She would totally be a foh member to me. He tries to take down them through HER.

- why jaiden? Shes probably the most visible with her apparent ability. I imagine her having hummingbird like abilities. Flying at such a fast rate it can change the force of wind itself, etc etc etc (running on coffee an headaches atm sorrie) but she KNOWS something. She knows the foh is fucked up. She knows its dictating the definition of right an wrong, but she doesnt have the power (YET!!!!!!) to kill them from the inside out.

- heros who are seen as the light amongst the city, vigilantes who are the underbelly of a growing problem/an antibiotic refusing to kill the infection, and singular villain who wants to put a stop to it for all. God. I am jn love with this au im sorry can u tell

- and then theres fucking SPIDER MAN. nobody knows who he may work for since, by the logic of q city, if your a vigilante, your working for someone else directly related to the foh, and being sponsored as such. But theres no calling for spiderman, theres even active "have you seen this person" signs around the city, marking them as a non verbalized threat to the standing of foh. Cellbits key.

- now he needs to convince his friends to help him find spiderman. For....... research. Yes. Totally. He wishes to interview spiderman in hopes to figure out "who he works for", which not really. Hes not the best at lying, nor was he really trying. He wants to crack down the foh to its rotten core.

- he even tries to ask roier for help at some point, right? He talks about the signs around the city, says its a shame that hes on a watch list- and how he swings around to actively web heros against the walls to stop them from hurting another person.

- and its convinent theyre on a coffee date (cellbit didnt even notice, roier did, an hes just awkwardly like... hahahahabah thats really weird why would spiderman stop him but also yeah i get that- why would thet get rid of MY hero <:((("

- cellbits subconsciously like. Shit. Pretty boy is pouting about the vigilante. More reason to find the motherfucker.

SORRY ITS SO LONG ENJOY THE RAMBLEEEE

WOW OKAY so let’s see:

1. It’s a lot like the Federation from the canon qsmp, but it’s also more overtly focused on ‘Protecting the City’ from superpowered threats. It stepped in to fill the shoes of the former police state, and by getting rid of the majority of police officers it both opened up opportunities for villains (and thus heroes and thus the Federation) and for heroes (see: previous parentheses.) The founder is anonymous, a “Mister Duck”.

2. I’m actually lowkey playing by MHA rules. Basically, at some point a couple of decades ago, kids started being born with superpowers. It was the more obvious ones that were discovered first, like a girl in France being born with little duck wings. Cellbit’s ability is less obvious, but his parents were constantly overly worried about him because babies and children are always very very scared of everything. Eventually he realized what was up when he was around nine or ten, but he didn’t really tell anybody because even back then he knew that he would “get in trouble” for it.

3. As for villainy, it was an accident. He needed money after his parents died (of sudden heart attacks, and he pretends he doesn’t know what that actually means), and he isn’t a very intimidating guy on his own, so he kinda… helped himself out a little. And it worked super well, so he kept doing it. And he kept doing it. And then he started going a bit overboard with it and the people he was robbing started dying, too.

4. And as for the murder, Cellbit and the hero were both civilians when they got into an argument. The hero, new to the whole thing, ended up using their ability and actually attacked him. He attacked back, notably without using his ability, and he accidentally killed them. The Feds were NOT happy about this, so they messed with the court proceedings and got him sent to prison for three years. But, hey, at least he got therapy there?

5 and 6. Jaiden is 100% working with the Federation in this au. She and Spider-Man are taking very different approaches to what is fundamentally the same issue here. I think her ability is more parrot-y, but she does work for them now. (It’s a very recent development.)

8-10. Spider-Man is a fan-favorite and the Federation does NOT appreciate him ruining their image!! And he knows that he isn’t well liked by them at the moment, and he doesn’t care because it’s fine if Spider-Man dies. He has a job to do, and he is going to do it.

11-end. And it’s a good thing that Cellbit is such a big Spider-Man fan! It’s something Roier thinks they can use to bond. Definitely. Bonding.

hi! i'm the anon who asked if it was ok to send asks abt aromanticism. the main thing i was wondering, and i am very sorry if this is offensive in any way, if its common or normal for aromantic (or asexual) people to feel grossed out when others feel romantic/sexual attraction to them. i recently found out a friend of mine has a crush on me, and it made me have such a strong disgust reaction that it doesnt seem normal to me, like the kind of reaction someone would have upon finding out theyre "desired", even if its one sided. this whole thing is now making me wonder if i am allo, especially since ive never been in any kind of relationship and all my "crushes" have been unrequited

i would say this is very normal for many romance-repulsed aromantic individuals, yes! not every aromantic will feel this way, but i've heard this experience from many, many aromantic people! if you personally do not experience romantic attraction and are repulsed by it, it totally makes sense that someone admitting they have a crush on you would gross you the hell out- that's not something you desire, let alone directed toward yourself, it's uncomfortable as hell

i have a complicated relationship with romance, myself- i'm aromantic, but i have both romance favorable and repulsed qualities- i am absolutely disgusted and repulsed by watching other people show romantic affection toward one another, it makes me feel disgusting and like i need to leave or at least look away. i hate listening to couples gush over each other and i can't stand it when i come across a couple where one partner is absolutely obsessed with the other and can't help but show them affection constantly, it's uncomfortable as hell for me

i am dating favorable, so if it's with a partner of mine, it's not so bad. i do enjoy cuddling, kissing, etc. to a degree, but it is difficult for me to date people who require a LOT of cuddles and kisses. there are times where i very much hate these activities and need to not display them for a while, and sometimes i can't even say "i love you" because it feels so gross. it feels way more gross to say than it does to receive, for whatever reason

i wish you good luck in figuring things out! this is a pretty normal experience for a good portion of aromantic people, you're definitely not wrong for questioning if you're aro because of this feeling. unrequited crushes are normal for everyone, but if you found that you had little to no drive to pursue those "crushes" it may be another sign that romantic relationships just aren't for you. hope that helps some! take care, feel free to ask any more questions you may have!

One of my hcs is that the night after a Gerudo's wedding & before the, “big moment,” it is tradition for the bride & groom to bath together. To help them to get used to each other's bodies. It is also thought of as symbolic of “washing off the detritus of failed relationships to ensure that this new one may flourish” as well as a way to bond.

Based on ancient Egyptian culture, I like to imagine that the Gerudo have a lot of bathing products that they make themselves in their more prosperous times. Like, body oils made from Palm Fruit oil, Oasis Honey (honey made by Oasis Ants), & Dune Ant wax. Hair oil made from Càrïtàn (castor) oil, Desert Aloe oil, & Shock Fruit juice. And the ancient royals (& I mean ANCIENT, like centuries before even coming to the Hyland continent) would often have Honeymilk Baths. Of course, the original recipe has been long since forgotten. However, there have been attempts to recreate it using local ingredients. Unfortunately, it is only used for a king's wedding night now due to lack of resources.

The Honeymilk bath is made using Ghamïchaa (Bighorn Sheep milk; however, Ordon Goat milk is considered more healthy & luxurious), Palm Fruit milk, Oasis Honey, & whichever scented bath oil that he & his new queen have agreed upon. It's poured into the water itself.

The most abundant scented oils would be Warm Safflina, Electric Safflina, Sundelion, & Frostbite Mint from the Highlands. There are others used, but it requires access to Hyrule. Things like Fleet Lotus, Din Juniper Berries from Eldin, Cinnamon from Akkala, Swiftsail Lavender from Lanayru & Necluda, Lovely Roses & Goldenmerry (marigold) from Faron.

They can also come in blends, but certain scents are more complementary together.

(I very much wonder which available scents each Gan would prefer… Actually, now that I think about it? Is there anything they're allergic to?)

Anyway, I like to think that bathing is a time of great vulnerability for Ganondorf specifically. I see him being uncharacteristically nervous here. Like, for no real reason, just is. Because sometimes emotions don’t make sense.

But, I like the idea that bathing each other is considered an extremely important bonding experience for Gerudo who are married. So, I see ELady offering to let him help her wash first (to give him more time to mentally prepare & he knows this & I think he’d be grateful to her not pointing it out).

Then, her propping herself upon the rim of the bath to work the hair oil into his crimson locks. Maybe humming as she does so & he finds himself relaxing into her hold with a sigh. Steam's inner machinations are something of a secret to everybody, but wishlists absolutely help the folks who make games. It's one of the most important ways you can help me, even if you're not sure you'll ever buy it. Wishlists get games seen, so please wishlist!

I'm really excited about this. This one actually my original plan for ProtoDungeon, to put each individual episode up on Steam and use the experience to improve… but I was talked out of it by a guy who was mad that Episode I wasn't a full-length game, and by his predictions of my failure. I switched to only publishing for free on Itch and decided The Waking Cloak and ProtoDungeon DX would be the only games I put on Steam.

I wish I'd never listened to that guy. He clearly didn't care about me, and I let his words and attitude control me.

The future is ever-shifting

There's a lot of things I've been doing because I felt like (and have been told) I should be doing. So for the future, I had been intending to really hit the ground running on all fronts, posting to social medias everywhere, launching tiktok and insta reels and youtube shorts, and generally pouring my efforts into "marketing."

I don't think there's anything wrong with this, but it's also… not me? It's not really what I want for my future. I've thought long and hard about this hobby, and I want to enjoy the parts I enjoy, and not let pride prevent me from letting other people take over the parts that I'm not really good at and don't have the time for anyway. Let's face it: my plate is full with my job, my kids, my house, taking care of my wife, chronic illness/pain, etc.

On top of that, I've been off social media for a long time now, and it's been so restorative. I don't fault anyone for being on any of them, and I'll poke my head up every now and then, but… I'm letting go of "making it" on socials. I can't keep up with the sacrificial requirements of the Algorithms. I can't keep up with the comparison game with everyone else making stuff on there. I had spent a lot of time curating my feed(s) so that I saw only wonderful people making wonderful art, and I still felt like I was always "coming up short."

The new plan: just post here on the devlog… just things I want to post. Focus on making my games and having fun doing it. I'm not gonna spend time finding the opportune moment to generate traffic or to say just the right things to sell people on playing my games or learn all the metrics and stuff. I won't post in every conceivable space hoping I'll get enough momentum to go viral or even just noticed.

Will that mean fewer wishlists, fewer followers, fewer people playing my games? Yes. And I'm content with that. I just want to enjoy the act of making games. I don't need to "make it big" anymore. I look up to folks like ConcernedApe (solo dev of Stardew Valley) and Team Cherry (small team behind Hollow Knight) and their lovely games and experiences, but I don't need to BE them anymore. I'm me, and I like being me.

Okay but what am I actually doing…?

Practically speaking, the plan is now as follows:

Publish ProtoDungeon 3 on Steam/Itch for $8.99, with a two-week launch discount of 15% (so, $7.64). I'd like this to be in Q1 of 2025, but I'm keeping things loosey goosey here

Publish PD1 and PD2 on Steam for $4.99 each, with the same builds as on Itch now (so they won't have Steam achievements). These might come before 3 is released, we'll see!

Continue with episodes 4 and 5, also on Steam/Itch--these will be significantly quicker to develop than 3, as they will be smaller and also will not require fundamental changes as 3 did. Pricing will probably be lower than for episode 3 and likely higher than episodes 1 and 2.

All of the above will be self-published!

Once those are complete, I will be working on The Waking Cloak, and it's here that I'm seriously considering looking into a publisher. I do want my games to be played by more people, and having professionals handle all the marketing and socials and console porting and other fine details would be such a burden off my shoulders. I've got my eye on a few in particular, but I'm putting more thought into this before I say anything else.

What about…?

Why are you working on ProtoDungeon and not The Waking Cloak? Trick question! (You didn't know you were asking a trick question, did you?) I say this a lot but it bears repeating: ProtoDungeon is helping me build up the mechanics and assets for The Waking Cloak, and is helping me get lots of practice with game design, as well as with art and publishing and so forth.

Will ProtoDungeon have spoilers for The Waking Cloak? Nope! The only spoilers will be purely mechanical, but I'm holding back a lot of puzzle concepts and a few mechanics for TWC itself. ProtoDungeon is a separate prequel story and has unique dungeons that will not show up in TWC.

What is ProtoDungeon DX? This will be the combination of all the ProtoDungeon episodes, with the early episodes rebuilt, and with additional content (like an overworld). I'm planning on working on this after The Waking Cloak. There will be some kind of discount based on your collection of individual ProtoDungeon episodes. I don't know how that works yet, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Whatever happens, I want to make sure it benefits y'all.

Why isn't ProtoDungeon free anymore? Simply put, because I think they're worth it. I've put a lot of time and effort and love into them. Also, I have a family to support, and this hobby is not free either! The episodes are short, yes, and that's why they'll cost less than a movie ticket.

Patreon? Development will be open and free as always, but patrons will get a first look (like with this post!) There are other goodies at higher tiers, too. And I should mention: funds go towards stuff like key art, publishing fees, and other minor operating costs. I was able to commission some wonderful art for ProtoDungeon: Episode III with y'all's support, but I've also bought some music tools (such as Chipsynth SFC), and I have a Studio Spacefarer P.O. box as an official address for legal reasons when publishing newsletters. I also am able to keep the main site, https://studiospacefarer.com, up with these funds. So, thank you!

To the future!

ProtoDungeon: Episode III has been a difficult beast to tame, partly because of fundamental changes to all the systems, but also because of where it fell in my life, amidst the pandemic and grief and changes and moving. It's become more important to me because of that, because it's a way to process everything. I had always known ProtoDungeon was about grief, but now it's much more personal.

I'm excited to work on things again. I look forward to sitting down and working out the details and adding the new ideas. I can't wait for y'all to experience it. Thank you for following along, and here's to future days!

I just wanted to say, in reference your anon saying they’ve never seen fandom nonsense like this and you agreeing, I absolutely feel you. I’ve been involved in online fandoms since around 2003 and it’s…kind of unreal. Especially considering the type of show 911 is…. I mean, I feel like the really intense fans come from sci-fi type shows and that area. I’ve been involved in that stuff and it has gotten intense but never like this and I was wondering why.

The only thing I can come up with is, of course social media has changed things. The way we view content and media and interact with it has changed, and fandom has changed. So back in 2003 I had to go on LiveJournal to share theories and spiral over shit. The general audience probably had no idea that was a thing. But now, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter…anyone and everyone is on those platforms and they may use it more casually, but they can see the over the top comments some more intense fans are posting. And so can cast, crew, showrunners, etc. This is a totally different experience.

Add in LFJ being absolutely unhinged and creating his own theories, endorsing fan theories, and encouraging behavior that was NOT ok, and this is what we got.

If people would only take a step back and say, hmm… “that was probably not normal and definitely not given the green light by the show or the network” I think they’d view it all differently. It really sucks that it all came to this and people can’t just enjoy the fandom experience. That being said, I hope you’re doing ok and enjoying things more since you’ve taken a little step back. Your blog is amazing and I’m excited to continue following you through the new season!

I totally agree. I lived through the LJ years myself and back then fandom was more hidden and obscure almost. It was something you never talked about in real life.

We didn't get any bts, interviews or fun cast dances like these days. The showrunners, cast and crew never even mentioned the fandom unless it was to say something generic, like 'We have the best fans' or something like that. We just waited until a new season promo aired and hoped for the best.

These days fandom is everywhere, out in the open, for everyone to take notice of. I'm not sure that that's a good thing in the long run. But here we are anyway. We might as well enjoy what we do get. Our old fandom selves from the early 2000s would faint it they saw all the content we get these days. 😂

I am doing okay, thank you. With season 8 fast approaching I'm getting all excited again for what we'll get to see.

just some thoughts (and things that stood out to me) on the latest batch of Dragon Age official cookbook preview pages (first batch, thoughts on those), under a cut in case anyone would rather not see cookbook spoilers :) -

thoughts:

it's neat to see some veggie recipes in there

I was hoping that the cookbook would contain recipes from across Thedas, from different nations and groups/factions, not just a few. and in the preview pages you can see recipes/food from Antiva, Rivain, Seheron, Nevarra, Anderfels, the Dalish, the dwarves, Tevinter, the Avvar, Chasind, etc, which is neat.

in my post on the first lot of preview pages, I said that the thing I'm most excited about about the cookbook is the new snippets of lore scattered throughout, and it looks like this theme continues. for example, I don't recall knowing this factoid before about Nevarran cultural approach to food/cuisine: "For Nevarrans, food is as much a feast for the eyes as for the mouth"

it's nice to see references to different characters from all three main games in the book, such as Sera, Alistair, Fenris, and Merrill.

in my post on the first lot of preview pages, I wondered if the recipes were written/compiled by one person, someone who was like Thedas' culinary world's answer to Genitivi. and I feel like this isn't too far off the case. Genitivi travelled all throughout Thedas gathering lore and information and writing about what he saw. in the Introduction page of the cookbook, we learn that the book author Devon set out to travel all across Thedas to sample and study the foods of the world, and they have now written this book and compiled these recipes based on their journeys and experiences.

I've made nettle soup irl from nettles that I foraged myself, so I'm excited to try making it again using the recipe from this book ◕‿◕

I searched bits of yet otherrr preview pages of the cookbook that are available elsewhere, and in these pages+those pages at least, I can see no mention so far of Serault/Seraultine food q.q but like I said, that wish is extremely niche to me as a person LOL so that's ok hh

Some other things:

First, we have 2 new mentions of Solas, beyond the egg joke from the first batch of preview pages. I have transcribed them here:

Mention 1) - "[...] brought on by the changing of the seasons, but they also ensure that long journeys away from home are possible. Imagine how difficult it would be for Dalish hunters to bring back meat the clan is depending on if they have to be back for supper every night - or, worse, hunt on an empty stomach! I thought this one was especially interesting given the reference to "certain Dalish elves" making offerings to Fen'Harel. 👁️ (jerky food treats for dogs is a thing tho hhh) It would be fun if this was a reference to the "Fen'Harel cultists"/Agents of Fen'Harel and their activities (not literal offerings perhaps but 'offerings' 🤔 supply network?). or just as interestingly, we know that "In the past, however, it is said that the Dread Wolf was called upon by elves for aid and advice in various matters, but always with a price. In spite of this, offerings of thanks were often given for Fen'Harel's help as he did follow through on promises of aid, if in an unorthodox manner. Since the fall of Arlathan, however, this practice has understandably fallen out of favor as a rule", and we also know that "Furthermore, some Dalish elves still erect shrines to him and make offerings; perhaps as a form of appeasement, but still a sign that the fearful wariness in which the Dread Wolf is held by modern-day elves is not absolute" [from Offering to the Dread Wolf in Landmarks on the Plains]. this reminds me of the other elves in other places which "yet linger" (Solas/Abelas conversation).

Mention 2) - "Hearth Cakes. Some lovely comfort food, courtesy of the Dalish. These cakes are traditionally made over the hearth on an iron griddle or skillet (hence the name). While the original recipe calls for halla butter, I've found that other types of butter work just as well. The resulting dough stays moist on the inside, but crisp and flaky on the outside. In other words: perfect. Although hearth cakes can be made plain, I recommend adding some dried fruit into the mix. Cranberries, raisins and currants all work. I believe the Dalish simply use whatever is on hand. Of course, if you're feeling a bit mischievous, you could mix in some hot peppers instead. Just be prepared to be cursed as loudly and vehemently as Fen'Harel, the Lord of Tricksters himself!" [text seems to accompany Hearth Cakes recipe]

the 'canon worldstate' that the cookbook is set in is in a time period after the new Divine is crowned in DA:I (so it's likely been penned in-world post-DA:I. before or after Trespasser I wonder?). in the cookbook worldstate also, the Divine's identity is given as Cassandra, the monarch of Ferelden is given as Alistair, Hawke's personality is given as Diplomatic, and they must have been a warrior or rogue, because this world's Varric met Bethany, so Carver would have died in the DAII prologue. is this the 'default' worldstate BioWare will use for DA:D in the case of no import/Keep-setup of choices? also, the Inquisition and the Inquisitor seem to be mentioned in the present tense.

in the photo for Rivaini couscous, one of the props is the Alistair pendant and letter item from the Gear Store (20% off discount code if you want one can be found here). is there meaning in this, is it random/aesthetic dressing for the photo setup, or is it simply merch placement/promo?

the in-world writer of the book, Devon, seems to be a hero fan, of the 3 main PCs and their companions 🥺 going by the way they write about them and how they partially inspired their food quest and how they know trivia about them. which I just think is so cute. and this leads to the next point which is simply

I'm also 🥺 over how Devon seems to have been the child of the chef/cook and/or the kitchen boy, girl or child at Castle Cousland. little things like this make the world feel more alive and the call back is nice. it also makes me wonder how old Devon was during the time when Duncan was recruiting the HoF, if they were born by then at all.

the recipes also seem to span our time through the series. for example, "Cacio e pepe" I think was first mentioned in Tevinter Nights. meanwhile, Chasind Sack Mead was a gift item all the way back in DA:O.

the map in the background of page 8 looks like it's the one from Tevinter Nights.

there's a recipe for Hearth Cakes in World of Thedas. we can see from the contents page of the cookbook that there is a recipe for Hearth Cakes in the new cookbook too. Sera's Yummy Corn, for instance, also appears in both. I wonder how much overlap there is between the food section in WoT and the new cookbook? are they straight copy-pastes of that content, or new versions/Devon's take [etc] of these foods? hopefully the latter ^^ from the 'yet other bits of pages elsewhere' that I've seen, it looks like the latter i.e. not copy-pastes of WoT, but without the full book to compare side by side with WoT it's a bit hard to tell.

"We grew up with a constant awareness of computers and technology, and I think we have a different attitude toward those things from the generation of Radiohead and others."

On March 1, 2000, Muse held a memorable first concert in Japan at Shibuya's ON AIR EAST. Despite being a brand-new band that had just debuted in September of the previous year, the band's performance was confident and dignified. However, Matthew was still very new when he appeared for the interview, and he seemed a little shy when answering the question. Nevertheless, he calmly and carefully answered our questions, choosing his words carefully. At the time, he still had an innocent expression on his face and a boyishly slender body. I was left with a strong impression that I wondered where his power on stage came from. Incidentally, since this interview was taken for “Cool Guitar,” a guitar playing magazine, some of his comments about effects appeared in the interview.

—First of all, I was surprised at your performance yesterday, not only by your technique, but also by your stage presence, which was far beyond that of a newcomer, and by your magnificent vocal performance. I think this is your first time in Japan, but it must have been a solid experience. Matthew: Thank you. We really enjoyed the gig yesterday. I thought we might be a little intimidated since it was our first gig in Japan, but our fears were quickly dispelled. I had heard that Japanese audiences are quiet…… I felt that way at first. But in the middle to the latter half of the show, they really expressed how much they were enjoying the show, which made it much easier to play.

—I got the impression that the live performance was quite different from the album. What I felt most strongly was the very positive atmosphere of the live show, which is different from that of the album. Matthew: Having been following the 90's for a long time, I think that although the US and the UK are a little different, the characteristic of bands like Marilyn Manson and Radiohead (who represented the 90's) was more of an inward energy, both live and on the album. That kind of music is definitely in our background. So people expect something like that at our shows. But we're hoping to bring more of an outward energy to our live shows. That's been our style since we started playing gigs.

—That's exactly what I wanted to say too. I know this is often compared, but in Radiohead's “OK Computer,” for example, Tom Yorke's expression is driven by a rather negative feeling of resentment toward the systemic material world. On the other hand, what I felt from you, who expresses with your whole body and serves the audience so well, was a simple "joy for music." I read in other interviews that you mentioned generational differences with Radiohead, etc. Do you feel that you are already living in a newer generation than they are? Matthew: Yes, I feel that there is a huge generational difference between us and them. In fact, I think 10 years can be said to be a cycle in which a new generation begins. For example, we are a generation that has grown up with a constant awareness of computers and technology. It was always right around us. I think there is a difference in the way we think about these things. Of course, more emotional feelings, such as anger, are hidden in the hearts of every generation, and expressing them in music has been done for a long time. However, I think there are differences in nuance and methodology between generations.

—I felt at the show that your generation shares an optimistic view of the current situation, rather than an angry one. Are you aware of this kind of generational view? Matthew: Well, I feel that we are at the beginning of a new era.

—Are there any bands that you feel are close to your generation? Matthew: Slipknot, and maybe Deftones …… I don't know much (about the other bands).

—How old were you when you started playing guitar? Was there a band that inspired you? Matthew: I think I picked up the first guitar when I was about 13 or 14. My older brother had been learning to play guitar for a long time, but he stopped and nobody used the guitar anymore. I think that's when I first got interested. I had been playing in a school band since I was 12 years old, but at the time I was playing piano with a jazz/blues feel to it. Around the same time, Dominic, the drummer, was in a punk band, and I liked them a lot, so I thought I might as well do something on guitar, so I started with some simple Sonic Youth covers. It wasn't until I was 17 or 18 that I started to take it seriously. I think I finally became aware of myself as a guitarist when I started playing the Spanish guitar because of my travels.

—Your guitar style seems to be influenced by a variety of genres, from rock to blues to classical, but who are the guitarists that are your direct roots?Are you a player from the 90s? Matthew: There was a guy in the classical world in the 1920s named Villa-Lobos (Note: Heitor Villa-Lobos: Brazilian composer, one of the most important composers of the 20th century, known for incorporating Brazilian music into classical techniques. Died in 1959), and I practiced a lot of his stuff. He really had a big influence on me. Then there is Jimi Hendrix, Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), and Kurt Cobain (Nirvana). I would say those four are the guitarists who have had a big influence on me.

—The wide range of influences is very impressive, with each phrase having its own hidden interest. Matthew: It just comes naturally to me. The music I've been listening to has been a source of influence for me, and I think it comes naturally to me when I play music. When I was 13 or 14, there was a time when I only listened to so-called “indie” music, but when I turned 17 or 18, I became more open to all kinds of music, partly due to the influence of my travels. And I absorbed more and more new music. Well, I've been interested in blues and classical music since I was a kid. Once I became more open musically, I started listening again to music that I had buried in my “indie days”…… and that's where I am now.

—Furthermore, the way you make full use of effects shows that you are enthusiastic about using your technical skills. Matthew: Yes, I do. I use a pitch shifter a lot on guitar. I have two outputs on my guitar. One is for synths, and the other is for a normal amp. I can use any combination of these to create different sounds. I use three completely different types of amplifiers. One is normal, one is stereo, and one is for guitar synths. I can switch between them at will. The guitars are two Peavey “Wolfgang” guitars (note: Eddie Van Halen model). The main and the sub have slightly different heads. The sub can be played above the nut. The other one is a Yamaha. The body is Telecaster shape.

—I think Johnny Greenwood, who defines the Radiohead sound, is very innovative as a guitarist. He once said in an interview that he sees the guitar as a tool and only one part of the band's sound, and I feel your approach to guitar playing is similar to that. Matthew: When I think of a show on stage, I think it can be said that the guitar is only one tool, as he said. But in terms of performance, there are many things you can do with the guitar. You can jump with the guitar, you can get wild, etc. I don't like the piano because you can't do that.

—Is songwriting a completely individual process? Matthew: Yes, it is. First of all, I try to picture every single note in the whole music, piano, guitar, bass, drums, vocals …… I try to picture it all in my head. Only when I have a complete composition in my head, do I take the instruments and start making sounds. The reason why I do this is that if I try to create a song with instruments from the beginning, I end up creating limitations based on my own technique and the tone quality of the instruments. If you do that, you will never be able to go beyond those limits. But there are also times when I try to take something I composed in my head and make it sound with an instrument, and it is still impossible. I have a new song that I'm working on right now, and there are some effects that I haven't been able to get to yet in terms of actually recreating it on an instrument. Until I get it, it's not possible to reproduce it as a song.

—Was your vocal style, with its impressive falsetto, established from the beginning? Matthew: I don't think my vocal style has changed since the beginning. I used to sing in the shower. I don't know if it was the humidity or what, but for some reason I felt my voice came out better. When I first started rehearsing with the band, we didn't have microphones or amplifiers. So I had to sing louder so that the other members could hear me. I guess you could say that my style became more defined through that experience.

—You will be touring the U.S. with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters (Note: Muse was recruited to open for Red Hot Chili Peppers on a 15-venue tour of the U.S. beginning in April 2000). Do you feel any sense of excitement? Matthew: I've played with the Foo Fighters for about three times in Paris, so I'm familiar with them. But this time, we are opening for 20,000-25,000 people. It will be interesting to see what kind of reaction we will get from that crowd, which will not necessarily be all of our fans. At the very least, we want to give it our all on stage.

—Any final message for our readers? Matthew: Well, check out Villa-Lobos (laughs). You'll hear some really amazing and exciting guitars. It's good to follow the new stuff, but I think it's also very important to look back and learn from the great history.

hii, ryen!! i hope you’re doing ok. this ask is about 3tan, i’ve finished reading all of it and i loved it so much!! i haven’t been following you for that long, so i wanted to ask if you update it annually, since i saw that the ep17 is going to be released next year 💞. also, i noticed you’ve been updating for a while now, i would love to know how the process of writing 3tan has been to you, if you don’t mind.

nah, 3tan updates as organically as possible. whether it takes a month to update or a few, it usually depends on my motivation to work on chapters combined with how busy i am with Real Life stuff😅 2022 was busy with updates but 2023 was slower. hopefully 2024 has a bunch and maybe even seeing it through to the end🥳

3tan717 is just the name i have for a 3tan event. It’ll consist of 17 drabbles, one for each month until yoongi comes back! just something for y’all to look forward to, starting in February👍

as far as the process, it’s been massively possible to keep going because of the community here. tbh if it wasn’t for all the wonderful people synergizing with the series, there’s no way it would be as vast and built as it is now!

writing it consists of many things, too, like trying to think of character growth in each part while keeping things realistic and moving along. if something doesn’t work, i step away and then come back to try switching things up and see if it opens the story for something to work with (like bringing in a character we haven’t seen in awhile, or pairing up characters to see how they interact.)

the whole process also takes a little longer bc i also try my absolute best to keep it as inclusive as possible, so each scene with reader is thought about and pictured with all sorts of body types to be sure it can work (ie: making sure the reader can experience something happening no matter the size, making sure no specific type of hair is mentioned, etc.) it’s something that i never ever mind doing, because i wanna make sure as many people can read this and relate as possible.
