i think if you're annoyed that something is getting talked about too much compared to something else you think is more important, it's valid to examine why ppl are talking about the first thing. and maybe the reason ppl talk about the first thing IS bad. like there's an implicit (or even explicit!) bias that makes ppl feel that the first thing is more important when a discussion about the second thing would bring more value. but even if you come to a conclusion on that i don't think the solution is ever to. make ppl stop talking about the first thing? i think the solution is to talk about the second thing yourself and encourage others to do the same. ideas and discussions are not a limited resource. people can think about two things at the same time.

Guilty gear fandom misogyny is so incredibly frustrating

Like you can pick any boy out of the roster and the entire fanbase is probably falling over themselves to hype them up; people pop off for their associated players' gameplay, they construct elaborate fan media that brings out the intricacies of the characters and shows off their best points, and won't take no for an answer if someone claims to not find them maddeningly attractive

But then with the girls, at best nobody cares about them besides the dedicated superfans, and at worst literally every other player only speaks the character's name to complain. They'll get nothing but vapid pinup fanart with no regard for character, if they're even on the radar at all. Whenever one of the female characters gets a buff or a player makes a good tournament run, everyone stops what they're doing to complain for a month, until they go back to largely ignoring them again. And then whenever a patch brings a new boy people convince themselves is cool, or gives an existing one significant buffs, half the players on a female character drop her to switch. It's like clockwork.

Also for some reason every male character has people headcanoning them as trans in both directions, regardless of anything about their actual characterization, but none of the not-canonically-transfem girls really get that kind of fan attention, which is disappointing. Except that one artist who thinks elphelt should be transmasc.

I think the only guilty gear girl to escape this is Bridget, by dint of being a little sweetie pie. But she's still like a purely auxiliary character to the canon, so there's not a ton to talk about besides decade old discourse, and she's underdeveloped at a top level, with the only notable reps being players who use her to try and scam opponents out of a few games before switching to their real mains once they drop one themselves. Like despite her popularity among casual fans there's still no daru for Bridget

And honorable mention to season 2 baiken, who attracted a lot of upper level players who were unsatisfied with their mains at the time, who then nearly unanimously dropped her for John or sin in S3 when it became apparent that it wasn't as easy to win with her as they initially thought

I like the addition of more of Wednesday's thoughts, and of course I enjoy how she is leaning into her curiosity over her relationship with Enid (not even romantically just in general). I think her reasons for attempting to be with boys were pretty in-line with what I wrote in the Chaos universe and the Black Menag, so I appreciate that part of the perspective as well as it's how I view her relationships with Xavier and Tyler.

I've seen some discourse on my dash that it's OOC and a bastardization of canon, some that it's a "Wenclair-coded" and Netflix approved sign of endgame. I don't think either of those things are true, lol. I think that if it's written from Wednesday's first person POV, the author's job is to incorporate her personal thoughts into the actions we see playing out on screen as she only really narrates at the beginning and end of episodes. I also think that based on what I know about novelizations (I've read quite a few over my two decades in fandoms), they were probably given the scripts. We know that there were on-set changes made to the scripts, and that since the book was written seemingly well-after season one came out, the author likely did pull from Jenna's interviews that she felt the love triangle was the actual bastardization of Wednesday's character and went out of their way to make sure that Wednesday wasn't actually obsessed with boys but using them for her own ends, lol. I won't buy/read the whole book because I don't generally enjoy reading fiction and when I do, I am the absolute most triggered by reading in first person active voice. I cannot tell you what comes over me when I have attempted to do so, it's like a frickin' trauma response for me. Nothing will make me put a book away faster than cracking it and finding first person active voice, lol.

Feel you on the wanting to write again; most of what I've written so far has admittedly been short extrapolations on tumblr and I am suddenly full of interest again in the notes I made for another essay last year, so maybe it's triggered my nonfiction era or something like that, but I also wrote like half of a fifth chapter for the 'Unexpected Memoirs' recently.

On the subject of Ford and drinking...I know you put the story with alcoholic!Ford on the back-burner, but it occurred to me last night that there's the potential for some interesting discourse around Ford's role in the show's addiction metaphors now. Admittedly, we have to take Ford's statements about himself with a tiny grain of salt, since he's barely a more reliable narrator than Bill when it gets too close to home, and one could read into the fact that he says he usually "tries to sober", which leaves open the option that he has to 'try' because it's an active effort for him and/or that he's the poster boy for nineties narratives about peer pressure making you make unintelligent decisions - not sure if I read it that way or not, but it would definitely be a legitimate reading. If we take Ford's statements at face value, though, and he really doesn't/didn't drink very often pre-Bill, then an interesting pattern that I assume could mean something still develops: Ford might not drink that often, since I can only recall now three canon instances, but when he does, he apparently cannot handle it at all. And it works even though we already had Fiddleford as the "alcoholic just waiting to happen" in the plot, since they have completely different motives. Ford isn't deliberately blacking out portions of his own life to avoid dealing with them like Fiddleford did, but he does, after all, 'use' Bill to get 'round his problems at first. His loneliness, his lack of social facility ("[he's] given me clever comebacks when I'm insulted"), his professional paralysis after a certain point of his research...issue solved! And he's rather repressed as a rule, trying to live up to his picture of himself he's built up in his head, so it makes sense that if his inhibitions are lowered in the slightest, he just goes a bit nuts with it, takes it too far, not least because Ford takes everything too far no matter how it feels, but also because he's, like...having fun for once. At least at first, anyway. Before we cross the fine line between 'taking it too far' and 'taking it too far" and then everyone ends up miserable and unwell.

Which also reminds me: I forgot about one portion of my original Ford Essay when I said last night that nothing in it had been definitely debunked. I proposed there that Ford may have had some vague approximation of a life in the years before Bill and the Blind Eye came along and messed up first him and then the whole town, but nah, apparently Ford was, indeed, lying through his teeth when he made a point of how happy he was at first in Gravity Falls and how he felt like he'd finally found a place where he fit in. Which also makes sense, since he and Stan are both to an extent putting on a show for the other's benefit in that scene in order to save face, but does make me kind of sad :( I wanted him and Manly Dan to be friendly, dangit. Don't know why, but I apparently was more invested in it than I'd realized, I guess.

I haven't been in this fandom for years now, and i wanted to check out this again and wow, is still the same. I feel like, is okay if people don't like sasusaku, i can even see why (everything was wrapped very quickly at the end). But to say that real sasuke fans shouldn't support sasusaku, or that if you really love sasuke you should hate sakura is a reach. I understand if people think he was wronged by the narrative and he deserved better, but this fandom treats sakura worse than the villains. If sakura was really a bad person, sasuke would have just .... choose someone else. She was just in love with a boy who was really traumatized and in pain. She wanted the best for him, is not a big deal. Is sakura a flawed character? Yes, she is. But so is sasuke and i still love him because i can empathize with him and see how much he was suffering. They both have a lot of good and bad things. I also can understand if people don't like sakura, but why is her hate always about sasuke? "she should have moved on", "she abused him", "she doesn't deserve him". Like, why is bad loving someone.. everyone in naruto is allowed to not move on from someone, but she has to. For her character to be better, she needs to stop loving sasuke. The hate that sasuke get is from people who pretend they care/like sakura too. Like, is okay if people don't like the canon couples, that's totally fine. I'm not a fan with a lot of things after 699 either. But, the fact that a lot of people think that you can't be a real fan of a character because he ended up with someone you don't like is ridiculous. SS couldn't have happened and i wouldn't care, sasuke would still be happy with other person and i would be happy for him. That's all I ever wanted for him. Same with sakura. Can they just let it go? I have just come to notice something about this fandom from seeing your comments and reblogs about the reactions to the discussion of bad boy as well as seeing other reblogs from other blogs. My realization is that some if not most self shippers are no different from some radical shippers out there. When you, cosmic, complain about the mischaracterization of Levi, I know it is from a genuine place because you have always only discussed canon Levi. I once thought that was the same about self shippers who come at and attack non self shippers for mischaracterizing Levi's character whenever he's put in a ship with other characters in the show, but after bad boy and their weird reactions to the discussion of Levi's trauma in bad boy because for whatever reason it somehow affects the way they always potray Levi as a walking sex God domineering 24/7, I have come to realize that their cry of mischaracterization was simply jealousy of the characters Levi is shipped with(which is crazy because imagine being jealous of cartoon characters) and not genuine dislike for mischaracterization of Levi's character like they use to hide behind and it's interesting to see such self exposure to say the least. Because why else are they so adverse to Levi's canon trauma if they are such champions of keeping Levi's character in the canon realm.

I'm sure it's a minority, just like with people who ship Levi with other characters. But, as always, it's a LOUD minority, and they give a bad name to the entire community in the process of acting the way they do.

But this is partly why I've never enjoyed shipping discourse, or talking about ships, whether that be self-shipping or shipping Levi with other characters. Because, outside of all of it, Levi isn't romantically involved with anyone, and in truth, shows no romantic leanings or inclinations toward anyone. He's one of the ONLY characters, in fact, who doesn't. Almost every other, major character is shown, at some point, showing some sort of romantic interest in someone, or having reference made to a past romantic interest.

But not Levi.

I can't think of a character, then, whom shipping discourse, of ANY kind, could apply to less.

It has literally zero bearing on his character.

And so I don't understand the obsession with placing Levi into romantic fantasies at all, or seeing him through the lens of romantic interest, or why these people insist on bringing their shipping fantasies into discussions revolving around Levi's ACTUAL canon character. There's no place for it there, at all.

If Levi's actual, canonically established character contradicts whatever version of him you've come up with in your head while shipping him with... whoever, then you need to be able to admit that Levi himself isn't who you're fantasizing about, whether that's with yourself, or another character.

And if you can't do that, and instead you rage against anyone for daring to discuss who Levi actually is in canon, and what he's been through in canon, because it disrupts your ability to envision him in your preferred ship, then you need to take a step back and engage in some self-reflection.

I get the feeling sometimes that shippers think Levi belongs exclusively to them, and so they can mold him into whatever they want him to be.

But Levi is a character completely separate from any of us. He exists in a fully established world, and is a fully developed person within that world.

People engage in so much projection, and it's incredibly irritating. They can't see past themselves, and often treat Levi as an avatar for their own thoughts and feelings. They think Levi should be whatever they are, or whatever they desire him to be. But, again, Levi isn't any of us. Levi is Levi.

If these people can't accept that, then maybe they need to move on to some other character that more closely resembles themselves, or whatever fantasy they've conjured in their heads about him.

There’s a lot of things that I preferred in the live action. (since it was the hook that reeled me into the world of kobymeppo/meppokoby 🤭)

They have more interaction and meppo doesn’t have as much of a golden stick of nepotism up his ass (as he did the episode of kobymeppo in the anime) he’s more (how do i say this) gentle and low-tempered,

i just can’t wait to see their interactions when they do the adaptation of the diary of kobymeppo!! *squeal* and i can’t wait to see their interaction with one another at marineford too!

I was watching the anime before i watched the live action, but around the end of water 7 when we see their glow ups i had that ultimate thought (“wait, do people ship koby and helmeppo together?”)

after searching it up and with that thought in hand, i went to go watch opla (not because of the ship thing i watched bc my brothers were watching it too)

and after the infamous bar scene and looking through tumblr for like minded folks my life and view on them has never been the same since (the kobymeppo fungus entered my brain) so watching the anime after opla was a breeze 😁 (it was not 😭)

When I first started marineford, every time they were together on screen i couldn’t help but smile 😭😭 ace’s death wasn’t even the worst part of the arc for me, it was me seeing the pink and yellow speckled flower of shounen-ai blooming in front of me🩷💛

just seeing them together made me TWEAAAK‼️‼️‼️😭😭

What I Don’t Like About The Canon

The vivre cards and due to them the “age gap” between them. and the no-funners that persist on using them. (whether they acknowledge it or not) This is the ONLY thing that i don’t like about the canon

The vivre cards state that koby pre-ts is 16 while helmeppo is 20 (4 year gap)

Ocean (cobymeppocean) made some age headcanons for them and I really like them so i have those headcanons too but some no-funner on twitter (the screenshot was taken on nitter bc i didn’t have twitter back then, do NOT find this person’s account i block on both twitter and here.)

they were pretty much shitting on his headcanons and they didn’t even bother to CENSOR HIS USERNAME.

be aware, their ages have been ambiguous for YEARS it was only in 2018 that their ages have been “confirmed”. The ages strawhats have been confirmed since VOLUME 4 (over TWO DECADES AGO.) that’s too many years too late!

And along with the yamato/kiku trans “discourse” is actually the main reason why i refuse to see the vivre cards as actual resources for ANYTHING one piece related.

While we're still on the subject on Timothy shifting focus to LS, I kinda remember seeing people complaining/mentioning that OG fans have been asking for a baseball episode but LS got them first instead. Not to mention LS's gay wedding proposal using a few notable elements of Buddie's legal guardian reveal. Not to mention LS having Bi rep first when people have been asking for Bi!Buck or Bi!Eddie, regardless of the can of worms I just opened.

I really don't want to be that person with "the grass is greener on the other side" mindset and I'm afraid you answering this will start a discourse on your back, but doesn't it feel like Timothy takes either what works on OG or what OG fans want and applies them on LS instead to boost the latter while keeping OG... what it is?

Yes to the baseball episode! The Eddie fans in particular have been pushing for it due to Ryan's love of the game/his role in Everybody Wants Some!!, but LS got it because...idk. It looked "cuter" for Carlos to root against his own people for TK? It was an opportunity to revisit Owen's anger issues? The proposal scene...boy. What makes it extra hard to digest is that Tim worked with Bob Goodman (as in, his name is in the credits) the same way he admittedly worked with Kristen to create the hospital scene. It's pretty easy to see, in my opinion, how Tim took something from a year ago and went "What would that scene have sounded like if they were actually together?" and applied it to the canon gay couple. If Buddie were canon when that convo took place, it wouldn't have *just* been about Christopher. It would have been about Eddie not wanting to waste another moment without Buck now that he came close for a second time (just like the Tarlos proposal happened after TK & Owen talked about living in the moment because "that's all any of us have").

The sudden bi rep...you gotta laugh, almost. OG fandom is so caught up in its own feelings that not having a canonically bi Buck or Eddie meant Tim was allergic to bisexuality. Except...no, He's not. He just didn't want to make either of THOSE characters bi. He (yet again) took something from OG and found a way to make it juuuust a bit different. OG has lesbians. LS has bi and trans rep. "A little something for everyone", as they say. There's also the way that a concerted effort is made to keep Grace and Judd connected despite their schedules, whereas OG fandom has to make excuses like "It makes sense that Madney can go more than one episode without interaction when they work different hours." Judd...literally drove to the dispatch center to check on his pregnant wife. Grace...talks to her husband while he's trying to perform a rescue. Even Sierra previously said that she believed Tim knew better than to have Judd MIA for Charlie's birth 'cause he'd get grief from the fans, but OG fan base's opinion was irrelevant when deciding to write Chimney out with no explanation? That's how it is now? Following the 911verse has basically become a game of "If you don't like the way OG did something, just wait to see it end up on LS." Maybe being too predictable is a bad thing in this case considering LS can't keep up ratings-wise. But don't fret! The Big Gay Wedding that fans actually get to enjoy will help. 🤪 (In all seriousness, I do hope the numbers are good that week, but the effort given to Tarlos vs. the long established lesbian couple in 5x18...what exactly was I supposed to be praising Kristen for? kinda agree kinda disagree. i do think it wouldve been possible for mlvn to work but i wouldnt say hopper taking el in is the problem i think ud kinda just have to rewrite alotta their interactions with some small things in the beginning but with a completely different dynamic in the later seasons (sidenote: honest to god if theyd just written hopper a bit better i would fucking love him as el’s dad like i love the found family trope and i do think they go well together but with the way he acts in s3 + the way their fight that culminates in el’s meltdown and him breaking the tv in s2 just yeah they rlly could’ve been done better)

It's an assumption the fandom has. She's very close with Laudna and their relationship is often interpreted as a romantic one. She's also told Bells Hells she had a crush on a boy named Sam back in Gelvaan, and seemed to find Eshteross attractive. Nothing about her sexuality has been confirmed though.
