Being an artist on the internet is so wild because literally anyone can be an artist.

That cashier you see every time you go to the grocery store who looks 2 seconds away from passing out? Ye they stayed up late writing a fic that they've been obsessed with lately

That front desk person at a hospital who smiles and greets you every time you come in? Ye they finished a big mural the other day, super exciting

That barista who makes your drink perfect every time? Comic artist who posts weekly in their down time

That one lab assistant who is super particular about the details? Full manuscript for an ongoing project they e been working on for the past year

They are literally everywhere, anyone can do art it's not as hard as people make it out to be and not all artists can do it for a living. So make art!

Coming back to this post after starting on my webcomic just affirms to me that the webtoons formatting is atrocious. I've been working on standard sized pages (partially because I want to print this comic at some point as a zine and I want all the pages to work like that tho I might have to redraw some pages in the future) and the detail required for just backgrounds has been... a lot

Standard page size, so you understand is 8x11 and that's already big enough to draw a print on so imagine that 7x longer. Which I actually did btw, as a test for myself and also because I wanted a super long prologue that was connected, I did a long comic page similar to webtoons and it was.... obnoxious, trying to work with that layout.

I was using non conventional panels to begin with so it wasn't like I wasn't using the whole page it was just... annoying and time consuming in a way I really don't want to deal with rn.

Time wise, for chapter 1 of my comic, I wrote the script back in mid July and started working on the pages around august. I finished those pages at the end of November and chapter 1 was 28 pages long. Plus, I was doing them in batches of 4 at first then almost burnt myself out and switched to 2 page batches and then a large batch of just lineart, then flats, then shading for the rest of the 14 pages.

So it took me 3 months to do 28 pages, full color, shaded, and with backgrounds.

For context in me, I'm a storyboard artist so I draw faster than the average person. Dear lord imagine doing webtoons pages like that???

Anyway that's my update on my opinion now that I've ACTUALLY started making comic pages

Personal opinion on webtoons and vertical scroll format:

It sucks.

Not just from a personal preference standpoint but also from a creative standpoint.

I’ve seen many creators who work on webtoons originals comment on how they miss doing regular comic page formatting and I honestly think the vertical scroll CAN be used creatively… artists just don’t have the time to do it.

They expect 70+ panels every update (which is ridiculous btw, at most 1 standard page comic would have 10 panels at most to give you an idea, so basically webtoons is asking for 7+ pages per update which is insane) which can be stressful but they also expect you to somehow do that many panels in a week!

When I see people complain about the background art in some of these comics I IMMEDIATELY come to their defense because would YOU honestly be able to draw over 70+ backgrounds in that time? The story is more important at that point! So I really don’t care.

Not to mention that workload is KILLER on an artists drive, motivation, and overall health (mental and physical) I don’t see how any of that is okay.

Regular comic artists who don’t use the webtoons format have expressed their own problems with all these issues and they make a single page a week!

Unfortunately, the draw back from doing a regular page a week means less exposure to an audience so there is a draw back but this consumer mentality when it comes to comics is disheartening.

Idk what or where I will be posting my comics in the future (maybe tapas? They allow regular page formats I think) but I don’t intend to bend to the webtoons gods will on this matter either if it means I can finish a story reasonably with my squirrel brain.

you don't realize it till you start a big project like this that you need to make so much shit and then you start to feel overwhelmed by it all but I'm trying to go at it at a decent pace!

So I made a new file for legends arceus and I had barely gotten all that far when I realized my character looked like Barry (Pokémon diamond/pearl/platinum rival) and I'm not kidding the instant I changed my outfit and game plan to try and catch his team and play with that I CAUGHT 2 MUNCHLAX IN A ROW!?!?

DOYOU KNOW HOW LONG I WAS LOOKING FOR THAT STUPID MON IN MY POKÉDEX GAME AND STILL HADNT FOUND IT!?!?

Apparently I just had to role play barry to get munchlax hedhdbd

Sometimes, late at night, I think about a concept for a story and want to write it.

And by write it I mean make a fully colored and realized comic about it... I don't have time for that thooooo

Since the holiday toy drive post is circulating again, I figured this would also be helpful! Food insecurity is such a massive problem in America, in general, and if you have the means to help feed others, I think you should take that opportunity. Here are some other tips:

1. If you’re planning on donating items from your own pantry, please check the expiration dates on the packaging. Think of your donations as gifts to bestow, not castoffs to be rid of. It’s awful to think of people feeling like they got scraps someone else just didn’t want. Everyone deserves dignity with their meals.

2. If you’d rather give money to a food bank, that’s also great since they buy food in bulk and know what items are most wanted/needed!

3. Not everyone has access to appliances like stoves or microwaves or hot plates so if you can donate items that don’t need to be heated up, that would also be greatly appreciated!
