General students of Darkwick + Jin theory

Clarification: What's up with the general student populace at Darkwick? I'm pretty sure the answer is that they aren't ghouls in any way based on the fact sorting of new ghoul students is a big deal and 'sways power' in the beginning, and there's also this huge plot-point about the discrimination ghoul students face. But going back and reading some of the prologue chapters where the PC is first learning about Darkwick made me sort of curious about it. Reading the newest Mortkranken chapter, it's clear that there are general populace students going out to deal with anomalies frequently enough that they might need treatment for injuries and curses. But if they aren't ghouls, are they just recon? How are general education students allowed in? It's said Darkwick is super 'competitive' at one point but with what we know about Darkwick in general that's at best a loose-truth. Also, looking specifically at Frostheim for this- a lot of them are upper echelon students. Fair enough that there are plenty who come from different backgrounds, but isn't it funny that so many of them come from families in places of power and privilege? Are these families directly funding anomaly research?

Another point, less related to general students: isn't it crazy that Jin, the son of the guy running the whole Darkwick branch in Japan, just happens to have become a ghoul? I mean, maybe it's just a coincidence (because if Yuri's explanation of demon compatibility is to be believed, he just happened to not be allergic to demon dust) but that's pretty fucked up circumstantially speaking. They're already in a position of power, but what if it was something they wanted to make concrete? His mother died of mental illness, and his relationship with his father is strained. Was his father using his own family as test subjects for anomalous research? Did Jin make a deal with a demon because his father was pressuring it, or because maybe he wanted to save his mother (though he ultimately failed). If the stigma each ghoul gets is based off a desire they had, and Jin's stigma is the authority to force commands, what's more desirable to the heir of a powerful institution? How old was he when he even made the pact? Was he a kid who just wanted control, or was it a want drilled into him from a young age?

Heyhey! Absolutely I have some recommendations!

So it goes without saying that I love @adjacentperception's writing as much as I love them. Their Rose & Laporte series is fantastic and I love those characters and the journey that Atticus is on especially. It's fun, it's silly, it's deep and it's got a realness to it that speaks to me as a person in ways I've been repeatedly surprised by. Link to the directory in bold.

@pocket-ozwynn has been a favourite of mine for a while, and the works he has posted are delightful. They're typically well outside of my preferred range for size-difference but the writing and characterization is so good I don't mind at all, and usually my brain can struggle with sticking with something if it's not exactly in my wheelhouse. Bite Me by @entomolog-t is more mature writing with sexual themes but I absolutely adore it. The prose is phenomenal, the emotions and sensations the writing evokes is a masterclass in tone setting and flow. Can't say enough good about it. One I've been very into lately and have been keeping up with as it gets posted is @fireflywritesgt's amazing (and Canadian-set! Woo!) work The Art Of Love And War, an extremely fun story that can bring excitement and tenderness and heavy themes equally well. Really been loving this one.

Wildcards!

Session 4 time! For some fun, I decided to add a death count for just the wildcard. Just to see how deadly each one is. The death count will be delayed a bit to figure out how many deaths are wildcard caused. It’s also under the cut for added spoiler protection.

Session 1: Shifting shrinks you, jumping grows you.

Session 2: Constant Hunger III. You can eat everything, but food restores no hunger (instead increasing the hunger effect to 8), and each item gives a different effect. It changed twice more during the session.

Session 3: The Immortal Snail. Everyone has an immortal snail that chases them down, it can mine, fly, teleport, and it speeds up when further away. Nothing can stop it. (It can also rebound TNT, and it drowns the player if it is drowning itself).

Session 4: Time starts moving extremely slowly then speeds up over the session to being extremely fast.

Session 1: 1 death

Session 2: 6 Deaths + 1 Assist

Session 3: 27 Deaths

Session 4: 0 Deaths

It's really frustrating being trans sometimes with cis loved ones because other cis people will go, "oh but it's such a huge adjustment for them! They're grieving for your pre-transition self/they aren't used to the change yet/it's hard on them!"

It's just so frustrating that people forget that trans people's feelings on this matter, too. Cis people aren't the only ones who have adjustments to make. Frankly, as much as I sympathize with cis people in this position, I can't help but be really jaded about it because so often, cis people jump to the defense of other cis people and they will seemingly forget to or refuse to give the same grace to trans people.

MAAAAN THESE SUKUNA ANALYSES... THEY'RE SO GOOD... I've always related to him super hard just on first readings as a trans disabled person who is an ambulatory wheelchair user. I'm incredibly violent and confrontational, too. If I could just fuckin kill the people who dehumanize me constantly, I mean... that kind of power is tempting! The way you read him is so satisfying to my brain, and it definitely makes sense in the text as well. Overall I'm just really happy to see somebody managing to put into words what I subconsciously grasped the first time I watched and read JJK. I was literally internally like "omg omg omg they put it into words!! omg!!!" the entire time I've been reading these posts. I can't wait to see what other analysis posts you've made and if there's other stuff for fandoms I enjoy. Thanks a lot for what you do! People like me appreciate it so much.

Sukuna is very cathartic for me as a character in that way too. He basically gets to act out where I would restrain myself.

It’s funny that you mention you’re trans. At the risk of tipping the scale to mental illness, I think Sukuna is a very gender character. I find his refusal to introduce himself very relatable. He just kind of lets everyone call him whatever. The only time he ever identifies himself is when not doing so could put in his life in danger.

That’s it. “I’m the Fallen/Disgraced One”. I don’t believe he ever refers to himself as a man either. He just uses a masculine speaking style.

I also like how he doesn’t seem to care about being associated with feminine things. The marketing leans into this for some reason, pairing him up with Hello Kitty, which I think is great.

He projects this “I’m too strong to care about gender” aura I’m obsessed with. It might stem from his dehumanization as well. Both himself and other people are not really sure if he’s a curse or a human, so why on earth would he outwardly identify as man? It's not like curses have genders to begin with.

But the moment anyone tries to concretely observe him, like Mahito or Yuji touching his soul, he flips out. That really captures the vibe of “acknowledge my existence, but do not perceive me.” And if you find that relatable you should read Umineko.

Sukuna is on the border of everything, so he reads like an allegory for multiple minority groups all at once.

He’s masculine in his presentation, but isn’t considered human enough to be called a man. That’s very trans of him.

He’s extremely ablebodied at a glance, but his abnormal features make normal day to day life a constant battle. That’s very invisibly disabled of him.

He may be Japanese by blood, but he’s deemed a monster and pushed out from society for not meeting certain physical features. That’s very biracial of him.
