Idk but it really fucking angers me that people are more angry at n*** g***** and his actions because it’s resulted in good omens 3 being a single 90 minute episode instead of a full series than they were at him for sexually assaulting and coercing multiple women. Would you rather have a rapist face no repercussions and benefit from making a new full series or have him fired and get a shorter ending to a story and characters you loved?

The Man – Taylor Swift
Tumblr media
Masterlist - Previously - Next Chapter
I'm so sick of running as fast as I can Wondering if I'd get there quicker If I was a man
Her partner, David, was a douche. That was the only word that Lyanna could think of to describe him. He was an entitled prick. All day long he was making snarky remarks to her or other people there. Nothing seemed good enough for him, he always found a way to criticize something. But he was a good actor. She had to give him that. But still, what a shame to be this good and being completely rotten inside.
But she kept it professional. She was her usual self when it came to work: she preferred observing rather than talking the first times she was meeting new people. She was analyzing her environment. Later, she would be more involved in the movie making, trying to give her input on how scenes would look better for her character. But that was for another day.
Right now, she was tired, she was grumpy, she was hungry. She wanted to take a nice shower, put some comfy pajamas, and watch trashy reality show on Netflix. She knew that Charles invited her but she didn’t feel like seeing anyone tonight. She would disappoint him, for sure, but she would rather be on her own with her thoughts. Still, she decided to at least text him to let him know that he had not to wait for her. It was the least she could do.
Hey Charles. It’s Lyanna. I don’t feel well tonight. I have to cancel our F1/movie night. Sorry.
She discarded her phone on the side and hopped on the shower. After a very long and very hot one, she collapsed on her bed. She took her pillow and screamed inside. It always helped her. It was a nice way to let her emotions go in a healthy way, that was what her therapist said. And God knows that she hadn’t always managed her feelings very well. She turned and looked at the ceiling of her room. She let her thoughts replaying her day. A part of her was excited to start filming, as usual when she was on a new project. She knew it would be fun, she was one hundred percent confident in the team and the script. He co-star was the only downside of this project. She felt like she couldn’t trust him and more than that she knew it. She knew his type. Ready to do anything to succeed, including playing dirty. She had to be careful around him. But it was not her first time doing that, as sad as it was, it was something she was used to. Acting was a tough field. You have to be surrounded by people that you could trust and it was more complicated to find that it seemed.
She was startled to hear the doorbell ring. She was not expecting anyone but she instantly knew who it was. After all, she didn’t know a lot of people in Monaco. She could not say that she was pleased to see him. One thing she hated was when people decided to not respect her boundaries and today, Charles crossed one. So when she opened the door, she didn’t bother to hide her annoyance.
“What have you not understood in I have to cancel Charles?”
“I didn’t know what you like so I ordered Chinese and Italian, no one can go wrong with that? I brought my laptop. If your F1 initiation has to begin tonight, it will be with the best tutorial, the amazing movie Cars. Hope you never watched it.”
“Did you hear what I said or did you just decided to ignore it?”
“I heard you loud and clear and I decided to ignore you. Staying alone when we are brooding is not healthy.”
She massaged her temples and closed her eyes. This situation was giving her a headache.
“Charles, you’re nice and all but when I ask someone to give me space, I would like it to be respected, okay?”
A long silence followed. Charles was obviously very uncomfortable. He thought that she was just trying to find an excuse to not come and see him, he never thought that him coming to her was going to be so bad perceived. He cleared his throat.
“I’m sorry, I thought you were not completely serious with your text.”
“I was really serious.” She looked him dead in the eye.
“Still, if you want to talk about it, I’m here.”
She sighed again. He gaze fell on the delivery bag. She was so hungry, she hadn't eaten all day except for an apple and some cookies. But she had drunk a lot of coffee, which also explained the headache.
“If I let you stay, know that it is only because you brought food and I’m really hungry. But I don’t want to watch a movie, I’m not up for it.”
“We can do whatever you like.”
“Even if it’s eating in silence?”
“Even if it’s eating in silence.”
Three empty boxes of spring rolls and a bottle of wine later, they were both sated. Lyanna was laying on her couch, completely spaced out and Charles was on the floor, his back against the leather armchair, playing on his phone.
“What is your favorite place in the whole world? Beside Monaco of course.” Asked Lyanna out of the blue.
Charles took his time to answer her question.
“That’s tough. I love Asia. Singapore is definitely on the list. The city is amazing.”
“Never been there. I would love too, though.”
“Maybe one day, I could invite you to watch a race.”
She rubbed her eyes as she sat up.
“No offense, but that seems really boring.”
He laughed. Somehow, he expected that answer. Formula One could indeed be extremely boring, especially if you didn’t know about what was at stakes. There were obviously the results and the sports performance but politics and strategies were a huge part of the competition as well.
“My turn to ask you a question. What do you love to do when you’re not acting.”
“Baking. I have a sweet tooth. And I like the fact that when you bake, you have to be precise and patient. Not everything will be perfect the first times. It’s all about practicing and trying.”
Charles nodded thoughtfully.
“I know you said you didn’t want to talk about it, but I’m gonna ask anyway. What happened today that you decided to cancel our night?”
“You’re not gonna let it go, right?”
“I can be pretty persistent when I want to.”
She got up and fetched two glasses of water from her kitchen. She placed one on the coffee table and sat down on the floor beside Charles. She took a long sip of her drink before answering.
“I met my partner today. Long story short, he’s a dick. He’s already criticizing some things that the writers wrote in the script. he wants to modify so many things and I already know that working with him will be a nightmare. I’m dreading the first day of shooting. My job is my safe place, it’s where I’m feeling myself the most. Where I feel confident. I’m always careful with who I’m working with. Of course, it happened to me to not like castmates, but I never got the feeling that working would be awful. I could be wrong; he could be pleasant to work with. It’s just that my intuition tells me that it won’t be the case.”
“Can’t you talk to someone from the production about it?”
“And look like the pretentious, capricious starlet who thinks she is above everyone else? Because it is exactly what it will look like. As sad as it is, even if I built a name for myself, one slip up and everything will come tumbling down. I’m a woman, Charles. Hollywood can say whatever it wants about being more inclusive to women and trying to protect them, it’s still a misogynistic machine.”
She emptied the rest of her glass in one gulp before continuing.
“And that’s without mentioning the press. I know it’s bad to judge someone without knowing them but David seems to be someone who would be ready to throw me under a bus if it could help his agenda.”
“What make you say that?”
“Experience. Sadly. I don’t want to risk anything to jeopardize the career of the people involved in this movie. That would not be fair. And if there’s bad press before the movie comes out it would impact everyone. I don’t want to feel responsible.”
“But don’t we say that bad press is still press?”
“Nobody wants to see a film in which it is known that the actors do not get along. It would serve bad marketing. Especially a romcom.”
“But it will also the case if there’s no chemistry between the protagonists, right? What are you going to do if you really can’t stand him. Won’t it be visible on camera?”
“That’s up to me to not show it. I know I’m good enough actress to be able to put on a show. See, that’s why I have a headache and didn’t want to talk about it.  This situation is messy and complicated and stressful. Enough about me, tell me something fun about you.”
“I drive at 220mph for a living but still scream when I sport a spider at my place. And I’m really afraid of snakes.”
Charles was pleased to see that this confession drew a slight laugh from her.
The rest of the evening passed without further reference to Lyanna's day. By tacit agreement, they had decided to keep the conversation fun and light. They shared funny stories about their lives and works and by the end of the night, when the moon was high in the sky and the stars were shining, Charles definitely had the feeling that he made a new friend. And it had been so long since he met someone that was not related to F1, that this thought made him happy.

Regarding Konaka’s influence on Tamers (or how much he actually didn’t have)
(Rest assured that if you’ve had a conversation with me recently about this issue, I’m not vaguing you; this conversation has come up a lot in the last few weeks, especially in my private chats, so this is just me deciding that I should write something about this for once since it’s been weighing on my head lately.)
I think, right now, with what happened regarding the DigiFes debacle, a lot of people are having complicated feelings about how to feel about Tamers, and this is completely understandable. I think there are also some things that may be inevitably unavoidable, such as starting to second-guess certain nuances in the series and what they might lead to. All of that is perfectly reasonable, and in the end, it’s going to be up to everyone to decide how they feel.
In light of this, a lot of people have been bringing up the fact that, while Konaka was the head writer, he was by no means the only person working on it. This is very much true, but I’d like to add something else to the equation: this is an issue that goes much deeper than the usual claiming death of the author for the sake of sanity. The full picture is that Konaka has always had much less influence on the series than the fanbase tends to attribute to him. Official statements have been very clear as to not attribute the entire series to him, and, among all the other controversial statements he’s made, Konaka himselfhas at least been very active about crediting the other staff members as far as their influence on the series! The idea that he was the only person who ever did anything substantial for Tamers is something I’ve been warning against since long before any of this happened (if you want proof, I have a post from April with this sentiment in it), and right now we just happen to be seeing what’s basically the worst possible outcome of the fanbase constantly worshipping him like the only real creative heart behind the series to borderline cult-like levels...when that’s never been true, and has resulted in unfairly taking credit away from people who deserved it.
I’ll go into detail below, and I hope this can help people understand the situation better and sort out how they feel about it.
Note that I make references to his infamous blog in this post, which I’m deliberately refraining from directly linking for obvious reasons, but all of the information is still there, so it should be verifiable if you decide to look for it yourself.
Personally, I’ve always found it really bizarre how there’s been this obsession with portraying Konaka as some kind of auteur whom the entirety of Tamers depended on. I’m not saying this out of spite towards him, because, again, even he himself was very insistent on disclaiming credit for things he wasn’t actually responsible for (he was quite humble in this respect, actually). Not to mention that I think it’s a mistake in general to constantly pin a single person in a multi-person production as the sole heart behind it, and the Digimon fanbase has historically had this strange double standard behind it when it comes to uplifting him as the only heart behind Tamers when nobody says that about any of the head writers for...anything else. (How many times has Nishizono’s name ever popped up when talking about Adventure? People are usually more obsessed with talking about Kakudou or Seki.) Konaka’s work is certainly distinctive, but Tamers had a lot more going on besides just that.
In fact, based on his own statements on the matter and all of the other official information we’ve gotten about Tamers production, while you can’t really quantify such things, it’s generally been estimated that Konaka was responsible for something like only a fourth of the series. Which is an incredibly low amount compared to what the fanbase would have told you before all of this happened, because of this fixation that he must be the genius mastermind behind the whole series. Not only that, this “brilliant auteur” image of him was so inflated that people were attributing way more of 02 to him than he deserved; 02 episode 13 was the only thing he contributed to the series and he was specifically brought on as a “guest writer”, and the overall plot of the episode was determined by the rest of the production staff and not him -- but ask the fanbase and they’ll tell you stories about how he invented some grand planned arc for 02 that got cancelled, or even that Tamers exists because of a “writer revolt” from him and other writers not being allowed to do what they wanted. (You know, as much as I understand 02′s a controversial series, it would be really nice if people didn’t make up completely baseless stories like this just to scapegoat it...)
I honestly cannot emphasize enough how much of the problem we’re in right now has been horribly enabled by the weird pedestal the fanbase has been putting him on. This is to the point where there’s even been a double standard where some of the more unpopular/criticized elements of Tamers must not have been the fault of a brilliant writer like him, and in fact was forced on him by the executives (this excuse had always been brought up anytime someone doesn’t like something about Tamers, just to make sure the image of him as a perfect writer was maintained). Turns out, as per his own admission on the infamous blog, while he wasn’t the one who initially had the idea of putting Ryou in, the part that rubbed the fanbase the wrong way -- that he came in as an accomplished senior who was better than everyone and played up by everyone in the cast -- was unabashedly his idea (he apparently was enamored with the idea of having someone like Tuttle from the movie Brazil). Again, this is a weird scenario where even Konaka himself has been more humble about this issue than the fanbase’s perception of him; he fully admitted whenever he had trouble writing certain parts. For instance, he doesn’t actually like writing about alternate worlds, felt they were out of his comfort zone, and only wrote in the Digital World because the franchise needs one; he’d stated that if he’d had his way, the Digital World arc wouldn’t have come in as early as it did, which might be a pretty shocking statement for a Digimon fan to hear.
If you want even more specifics, here are some extremely major parts of the series that Konaka was not actually the one behind:
The character backgrounds. Konaka stated on his blog that he wasn’t interested in going too much into character backstories because he felt it was too plot-limiting to say that a character is the way they are thanks to something in their past or background (basically, he cares more about plot than character for the most part), and that he’s also not into worldbuilding. Certain things like Ruki going to a girls’ school were supplied by Seki, who infamously loves worldbuilding, family backgrounds, and character settings.
Certain nuances of Ruki’s character, especially the part where she’s pigeonholed into uncomfortable places due to being a girl, were informed by Yoshimura Genki, writer from Adventure and one of the head writers of 02 (who eventually would go on to create an entire career out of feminist cinema).
According to the posts on his blog, Impmon’s character arc didn’t have much input from Konaka himself and was largely written in by Maekawa Atsushi (also a writer from Adventure and one of the head writers of 02).
The whole concept of Yamaki being redeemable in the first place was something Konaka didn’t originally plan for; he’d initially intended to make him a straightforward antagonist, but, of all things, his Christmas song, combined with the input of the other writers (especially Maekawa) humanizing him, led to the development where Yamaki eventually changed sides and became sympathetic. (This makes Konaka’s recent stunt revolving around Yamaki a bit painfully ironic.)
The director, Kaizawa Yukio, was deliberately picked because he didn’t have experience on the prior series, for the sake of changing things up, and he spent Tamers as a period of studying what Digimon should be like. Based on what he’s hinted, it seems Konaka's writing style and choices were able to have as much influence as they did because Kaizawa approved of them -- that is to say, Konaka’s detailed imagery and descriptions were extensive enough that Kaizawa could go “sure, let’s go with that.” But in the end, nothing Konaka did would have gone through unless Kaizawa and Seki (among many others) didn’t also approve of it or provide input. Moreover, Kakudou Hiroyuki (director of Adventure and 02) has also been stated many times to have been a valuable consultant on invoking Digimon so that the new staff could understand what to aim for and how to get the right feel (and also assisted with providing stuff for the mythos, such as the Devas). Nevertheless, Kaizawa also seems to have had his own strong opinions and input on the story; he especially seems to get passionate when it comes to the topic of making the story something the kids watching it could relate to and imagine. (He would eventually go on to direct Frontier and Hunters, along with several episodes of the Adventure: reboot.)
So in other words, looking at this, a lot of these things that people emotionally connected to and loved about Tamers are things that literally were not his personal creation, and were largely contributed by the other writers! Of course, Konaka’s “creator thumbprint” is very obvious -- he was the head writer, after all -- and all of this had to go through his own vetting to make sure he personally liked it as well -- but nevertheless, you can see that this very much was a collaborative effort from head to toe, with him being very open about this fact himself. Insisting on making sure that this fact is well-known isn’t just a coping mechanism to try and remove his presence in the series, but rather a desire to get people to seriously stop giving him credit that really should be going to others (especially since, again, even he himself was very diligent about assigning that credit).
In the end, I’ll leave you with another thing to keep in mind: Konaka doesn’t get paid anymore for Tamers work (unless they make something new like the DigiFes thing), so continuing to buy Tamers merch and supporting the series through fanart and such will probably end up going more towards the Digimon IP as a whole. Basically, if we’re just talking about Tamers specifically, what degree this is going to matter is only really relevant to the content in the original series, which is now twenty years old and remains unchanged. By Konaka’s own admission, he wasn’t into all of these conspiracy theories until 2010 at the earliest, so while it’s understandable to be a bit wary about the themes in Tamers having traces of the base sentiment, the original series itself does not seem to be an outlet for alt-right propaganda, and it’s probably forcing it a bit much to read into it that way. Konaka’s also repeatedly insisted that all of his attempts at a Tamers sequel have been rejected and that he’s been doing increasingly strange swerves to get around members of the original cast not entirely being available, and the Japanese audience has turned out to not be very fond of the contents of the 2018 drama CD and the stage reading for reasons entirely separate from the politics, so it’s also unlikely we’ll be getting a Tamers sequel from him or something in the near future.
So -- at least for the time being -- what’s done with him is done, and the remaining question is how all of us feel about Tamers. I think everyone will have differing feelings on it, and that’s perfectly understandable. Personally, given everything I just said above, I’m going to continue treating it as a series very important to me, and one that many people (including, as it seems, a very different Konaka from twenty years ago) worked on with a lot of effort and love, although you may see me getting a bit more willing to be critical about the series and its themes thanks to my concerns about some of the sentiments in it and what they imply. I also completely understand that there are probably people whose associations are going to be much more hurt and who will have a much harder time seeing the series the same way ever again, and I think that’s reasonable as well. But at the very least, going forward, I hope all of us can understand the depth of this situation, give credit where it’s due, and not force credit where it’s not due.

Doyoung:
I don't know if you'll even read this but if you do, I want you to know that what we have for two years was not a game for me. Maybe we can't start being honest with each other. When you make up your mind you know where to reach me.
Mina really knows how to dress you up to the nines, you'll give her that.
"It's not bad," you nod at your reflection approvingly as you examine the dress you wrestled yourself in, clinging to your body in the right places effectively enhancing your silhouette. The soft silky texture of satin feels exquisite against your skin however you can’t exude the confidence the dress might have channeled you with. You don’t feel grand in fact you feel the opposite;
You want to cancel the date.
"Oh for christ's sake, ______. Maybe try to put some enthusiasm into this," Mina spun you around to face her, your back to the whole body mirror where a while ago you two were examining the outfit she picked up from the back of your closet - where dressier clothing of yours reside not seeing the light of the day unless for special occasions.
Placing both her hands on your shoulders, "You were so excited when you called me to pick something to wear. What happened?" She further inquired.
You heave a sigh, "I don't know I am just not in a mood to go out on a date with a stranger," you admitted.
Mina pulls your eyes back to hers, gleaming with determination. "You are ______, an economics major who graduated on top of her class, who landed a new job as a senior financial analyst despite being in the industry for only three years. Now repeat it," Mina orders you.
"What does it have to do with -" you rolled your eyes, and whined dramatically.
She clicks her tongue on the roof of her mouth in displeasure, "Go on say it"
"I am ______, graduated on the top of my class and landed a new position as a senior financial analyst despite my tenurity," you mumble in a low voice.
"Good," Mina coddled you as if you are an infant who uttered her first word, "now add I am young, smart, and men want me."
You open your mouth to protest but Mina only pinned you with a hard look and you know you will not be getting out of this until you do as she says.
"I am young, smart, and men want me." You did as she told you.
Begrudgingly you did feel a lot better.
This is the third step of banishing Kim Doyoung in your life entirely.
First is to send a resignation letter - done.
Second, secure a new employment - done.
Third is to pursue a romantic relationship.
"Now let's get you ready for your date." Mina pulled you to the present, squeezing your bare shoulders to comfort you.
"I know that what you did is really hard. The sudden big change and all but today's Valentine's day you need to have a little fun today."
"I know Mina, now do my makeup." You pulled her to where your vanity table is located as you paste a smile on your face in order to placate her worries.
--------
If people were to know why you are doing this they might have called you silly.
After graduating from university you were offered the position of financial analyst in his company - a small but budding start up in Tech. Never would you have expected to land a job in your chosen field straight out of college. You are doing what you have envisioned yourself doing: analysing the trends and forecasting sales of the company's cloud solutions. You are comfortable with your current living situation, not what you have imagined after your parents cut you off no longer sending you an allowance. You thought you'd be working your ass off to make ends meet. Thankfully, the pay was high enough for you to live in an apartment in the city, pay your bills in time, and afford luxuries you knew that most people your age wouldn't have the money for.
Everything seems perfect right? A job that you genuinely love, good pay, living in the heart of the city but of course you just have to develop feelings for your boss: Kim Doyoung. And that complicates everything; enough for you to decide to completely start over again.
Kim Doyoung has managed to worm into every nook and cranny of your life.
Kim Doyoung is a magnetic man, of few words, stern straight brows, and wide shoulders swaddled in elegant suits. He runs the company based on data-driven decisions unafraid of taking risks that produces the highest profitable outcome. Working at his company where all ten workers directly reports and closely works with him, you and your colleagues have developed quite a personal relationship with him. It was not conventional per se but you guess this is how all start-ups operate with a slightly different work culture. Unlike big corporations there is no bureaucracy, filling for leaves can just be a phone call or a visit to his office.
As his only financial analyst almost never leaving his side. You'd like to think that Doyoung might have developed a soft spot for you, maybe not in a romantic sense but in a platonic friendly way. He values your opinion enough that he asks for your input in any pivotal decisions either in work or his personal life. Whether to facilitate the migration to cloud as external contractors of big corporations or to oversee the renovation of his penthouse. And in small things too honestly, after all he asked for your help to decide whether the decor should be a Bohemian vibe or modern minimalistic black and grey.
That was until you fucked after the in-office celebration of closing a big contract. One moment he is talking about the vase that serves as a centerpiece of his dining table that you helped him pick, the next he was pulling your arm leading you to a dimly lit room.
Yes, you did drink but you were sober enough to protest if you didn't want it; who are you kidding? Of course you wanted it to happen. Not one word of objection was uttered as he pinned you to the wall with your legs circling his waist. Instead of protests what left your lips was series of moans and his name in breathless pleas that he had to stuff your mouth with his fingers or else your colleagues will hear the two of you having sex two rooms away from them.
Doyoung slipped out of you stepping back to let you down.Your stilettos made a clicking noise as it came in contact with the tiled floor that echoed in your eardrums; deafening. Coming back down to earth and from your high is also the moment when you realized the mess you put yourself into by fucking Doyoung - your boss - in a storage room.
You righted both your disheveled appearances - to look as normal as possible - in order to go back to the pantry where the celebration was still in full swing. The tense silence that wrapped the atmosphere makes you want to shrivel in shame, both of you were aware of the line that you have crossed.
The unspoken words were hanging in the air -
It was a mistake. Let's forget this ever happened. - and you refused to acknowledge the elephant in the room, the stillness making you uncomfortable by the second.
"_______ -," Doyoung started.
"We don't have to talk about it Doyoung."
You moved for the door, not looking back to peek at Doyoung's expression. You just wanted to get out of the dusty storage room, the stuffy air and Doyoung's proximity, suffocating you.
You thought you were smart enough not to make the same mistake again but you seem to have a penchant for getting hurt because you did it again and again every chance you got. When the effects of orgasm are wearing off and you are left naked and vulnerable you always find yourself swearing that it will be the last time but you already knew you were lying.
You just can't get enough of Doyoung even though it hurts to pretend that each encounter was meaningless.
Sleeping with someone where you never knew where you stand at is excruciatingly painful.
You can't be jealous when you hear about the new girl he's with because you have no right.
It is painful when Doyoung gives you some false hope. Visiting you almost everyday in your small office bearing lunch for the two of you. He often spends half of his day loitering in your space, perching himself on the corner of your desk pushing around the knick knacks around your desk while you are busy with work.
Only to dash it when he tells you about the latest girl he's seeing which would mean your ears would bear the brunt of his relationship woes until it falls apart only for the vicious cycle to repeat again when he found himself in another one of his flings.
Everyday as he asks for relationship advice you feel yourself getting worn out and the green eyed monster roaring it's head, you try your hardest to tamp it down with your rational thinking.
What hurts the most is he started his series of flings a week after you hooked up, rubbing on your face that it means nothing to him at all.
So after countless hours, days, and months of anguish you started planning your escape.
--------
There are so many thoughts running through your head it starts with: Did I overdress? Is Johnny having a good time?
Then drifts into completely unrelated manners.
Did I manage to say goodbye to all of my co-workers? Clear out my desk in my office? Surrender my elevator pass to the friendly security guard? Retrieve my favorite mug in the pantry?
Will everything be ok? Will I excel at my new company? Will I fit in a big corporation?
Will I miss Doyoung?
Am I doing the right thing?
Johnny cleared his throat which broke your reverie, your eyes settling in his face but Johnny seems to find the table napkin worthy of his attention rather than maintaining eye-contact with you.
"I had fun today but I think -," You see Johnny hesitating to continue his sentence, linking and unlinking his fingers instead.
You get it and you can't blame Johnny for his lack of interest. You were barely with him today after the small talk had died down and the two of you had finished your meals. You didn't make an effort to get to know him, the conversation was one sided as you barely threw the questions back at him; replying in terse short sentences as if you would rather be anywhere but having dinner with him.
"Yeah me too but it's really nice to spend Valentine's with you though and getting all dolled up. Makes me forget I am single," You joked and flashed him a smile; relieved, Johnny finally met your eyes as his actions mirror yours curving his lips into a smile.
-------
You hailed a cab for a ride back to your apartment, settling in the backseat you instructed and gave the address to the driver as his radio blasted cheesy romantic songs in your ear, making you feel more disappointed with how bad your date with Johnny went.
As the cab speeds through the city, the citylights intermingle with each other creating a spectrum of colors that bounce back at the cab’s windows, the scenery of skyscrapers blurring past your eyes and your mind returns back to musing which you know is a dangerous territory because somehow your mind always returns back to him.
Doyoung
What exactly did you want to be with Doyoung?
You want him to like you? No, You want to mean something to him, to be the special person he runs to whenever he's devastated, to be the first person he calls when he's completely utterly bursting with joy. You want him to be completely aware of your presence that even just a mere mention of your name will evoke something in him, make his heart beat a little faster and cause some flush to bleed through his cheeks.
You want him to be endeared with your habitual tics - how you drum your fingers in every surface when you are in deep thought, a line maring your forehead between your brows and make his lips itch to kiss it. You want him to be captivated with your idiosyncrasies and find it charming, you want him to adore everything about you that made you, distinctly you.
You want him to want you.
Your phone vibrated and interrupted your stupor and upon seeing Doyoung’s name attached to the notification. Your fingers quickly unlocked your phone, fingers ringing from an adrenaline rush just from the sight of his name.
Doyoung:
Come over?
And just like that you inform your cab driver to make a detour and drive to Doyoung’s instead.
Doyoung opened the gigantic door of his penthouse where he found you on the other side of the door, shifting your weight from foot to foot, nervous to be in the same perimeter as him. When the gap was big enough to see you his eyes roved over to your body and noted that you were dressed up nicely for a date. His eyes then turned into slits as he glared at you.
“Have fun with your date?” He questioned and you can see his jaw set - the muscles clenching tight.
You didn’t answer, you don’t want him to know the pathetic evening you spent with Johnny as your mind drifts to thoughts of him; instead of actively participating with Johnny’s effort of back and forth.
As if knowing that you wouldn’t answer, his arms went to grab your forearms pulling you inside and leading you to the stairs up his loft where his bed is, you followed meekly behind him. Reaching his loft you look around and try to commit to memory the layout of the room; promising yourself that this will be the last time you will set foot in this room.
Doyoung attached his lips to your neck which drew a soft moan from you, spurred by your sounds he continued to ravish your neck oscillating between harshly sucking and peppering soft kisses on the expanse of the skin of your neck. His hands running at your sides smoothly and gradually getting closer to the underside of your breasts with each pass, when he finally cupped your mounds you arch in his palms further pushing yourself closer to him, greedy for his attention from all the teasing that he has done.
When he spoke again it fanned over the nape of your neck making your skin tingle from the warmth, “Why can’t you understand that I am the only one who can make you feel this way.”
You can smell the residue of whisky on his breath and you wanted to taste it on your tongue even though from all the times you have slept with him you two have never kissed. You have drawn the line there for kissing is much more intimate than slapping bodies againsts each other for satisfaction. Kissing can be done without sexual notions but a simple act between couples and it is a glaring truth that you two were not.
You found yourself naked and sprawled on his queen size bed where you have lain your back many times but never spent a night in. Even the off white color of his ceiling is familiar to you as if mocking you for all the times you said you wouldn’t see it again. As he slips your dress down your body, your eyes water and it pooled in your eyes ready to spill over. ‘This is the last time,’ you tell yourself again, 'this is the last time that I will be Doyoung’s beck and call.' When he was finished trailing his lips down and also discarding his clothes at the other side of the bed you managed to swipe the tears that gathered in your eyes and look at him.
Towering over you he was a sight to behold and you trace the line of his body with your eyes, caressing the dips on his collarbones and the line that leads down to his cock as his face coil into a smirk smug with the knowledge that he can turn you into a whimpering mess.
“What do you want?” He asked while splaying his hands on your stomach, his thumb drawing circles on your clit which made your moans even louder and your pussy clench on nothing. You hate that he was the only one who can make you feel this way, reducing you into a pleading mess as you move your hips to the rhythm that he has set.
You don’t have to tell him your guttural whines already told him what you wanted and he obliged inserting his length into you slowly, while you gripped his sheets until your knuckles turned white. You loved the way he filled you and the burn that accompanies when he stretched your clamping muscles on him.
So you let all your reasoning go because Doyoung’s cock pumping inside you felt good, too good.
He knows your body like an instrument, putting the right pressure and hitting the spots that makes you throw your head back repeatedly. You can feel the falter in his quick thrusts and knows that he is near his end. Doyoung makes this one sound at the back of his throat when he orgasms … and you follow suit too as he falls apart.
It took a few seconds for him to untangle his legs and arms from your figure and it took you a couple of minutes of staring at the walls, waiting until you felt your legs can support you before you stood up and searched for your dress and undergarments. You can hear the rustle of the sheets as Doyoung sits on his bed watching your back as you slip on your panties and pull your dress back in its place.
“So tell me why did you leave the company?” Doyoung asked, his voice ringing loudly in your ears.
“I told you already I want to work in a big company,” You try to answer nonchalantly.
“Really? Or does it have something to do with me?
“Oh for fuck’s sake Doyoung. The world doesn’t revolve around you!” You shouted at him as you turned around to face him. Your ire rising as you see the cold stoic look on his face - unaffected by your outburst.
“Then why does it feel like you are running away from me?” He stood up from the bed and warily approached you as if you will lash at him any moment.
“I hate you,” (I love you) you whispered under your breath the words not meant from his ears but he heard it anyway. Disbelief painted his features he cannot grasp the reason why you are suddenly acting like this.
He reached out to touch your arm but you swerved his hand like a hurt animal nursing a wound and Doyoung then noticed your bloodshot eyes and defensive stance.
“Don’t touch me. Whatever destructive thing this is Doyoung, I am done. We’re done,” You stated bluntly your voice devoid of emotions a complete contrast with how you hugged yourself tightly with your arms.
“You don’t mean that,” Doyoung said adamantly as color drained from his face, making his pale complexion - paper white.
“You can’t just walk away,” He added more to convince himself than you because he can see that hard look in your eyes - already set in the decision of walking away from him.
“Watch me Doyoung,” your lips curved into a cruel bitter smile.
You leave him with those words as he watches your retreating figure until it completely disappears from his line of vision.
--------
That night when you received a text from Doyoung, you never bothered to open it, opting to delete it and completely block all communications with him. You need to move on and in order to do it you need to sever all ties that might delude you to come back in his arms again.
You need to escape from Kim Doyoung for it's been due too long.

Spice e-plus interview Die & Toshiya 27th April 2021
Tumblr media
DIR EN GREY:  What’s the current mood of a band that chose to move forward even in times of Corona? DIR EN GREY is releasing their 32nd single "Oboro" on April 28th. After a series of cancellations and postponements of their lives due to the Corona outbreak, the band continues to move forward with activities such as “Explosive screening ‘Meguro Rock-May-Kan GIG”, an unattended live performance recorded at Meguro Rock-May-Kan GIG,  that is being screened at live houses all over the country. We asked Die (Gt) and Toshiya (Ba) remotely about the shocking music video, the new song "Oboro", and the current band mood.
Notes before reading: This is Die and Toshiya’s interview for the Japanese website Spice E-plus published on April 27th. Feel free to correct me if you spot any mistakes or any confusing parts. Links or credits to this post when the content is reposted or captured in other SNS is appreciated :) --- Original interview: Here
Text by:  Yohsuke Hayakawa ---This interview was done on the last day of the  “Explosive screening ‘Meguro Rock-May-Kan GIG” but, even though there is no audience in that live, the band could play together on a stage for the first time in a while.
Die: That’s right. There was no audience, however at the time of recording there were some moments in which it was difficult to play as there were no limits. The fact we were able to get together for the first time in a long time and play together as a band was simply touching/ emotional.  However, it becomes difficult if you can’t see the audience. Last year we did an unattended live broadcast but that was the first time and as it was broadcasted in real time, I was nervous. In that sense, this time was a bit different from the previous live without audience we did. -How was the “Meguro Rock-May-Kan GIG” for you, Toshiya? Toshiya: First of all, I think it was the best thing to be able to show movement as a band. Also, I’d say overwhelming? About being able to play together, I think the words I’d use would be “happy” and “fun”.
-Ah, it felt like returning to a place that it’s like the origin of the band. Toshiya: That’s right. When the five of us played together for the first time, it was interesting and fun, somehow, I think I was really nervous about it. It’s not something that paralyzes you, I think it was a natural feeling after all. In this special environment because of Corona, it was like the first time we played together, I thought again “after all, this is it”. -In terms of freshness, you also had the chance to play “Ochita koto no aru Sora” (digital single released in August 2020) live for the first time. Toshiya:  Yes. After all, I could realize that as opposed to when you play it with headphones, the rhythm is adjusted in an atmosphere in which the air is moving around. Die: Actually, I felt it was a song that felt familiar and I was playing it while feeling that if we went on tour, I would be able to create more and more grooves.
“ We can’t play lives but as we are making songs for the album, we are moving forward. I’m hopeful because of that” (Die) -Along with the latest songs, there were some nostalgic songs that suit “Meguro Rock-May-Kan GIG”, especially “JEALOUS” was a surprise. Moreover, it was the original version, not the “reverse” one. Die: Hahaha. Well, we’ve played old songs on the "mode of ~" tours, so it’s a song we can still play. However, the tempo of the songs at that time was too different from what it is now (laughs).  It’s simple, but it feels like I’m playing a song from another band. Toshiya: Regarding “JEALOUS”, we were planning to play it at the cancelled tour『TOUR20 Sogai』 - I didn’t expect to heart it at this timing.  Hearing it after a long time…. the impression I got is that the sense of consistency has increased in “JEALOUS”. Die: Hehehe. Toshiya: I think that's right. As we didn’t listen to the click (of the metronome) in the old songs, if someone was going faster, everyone would go faster to keep up the rhythm, and if someone messed up, everyone would be drawn into that.  In that sense, I had a lot of freedom but as recent songs (the rhythm) are matched by this clicking, in order to do that, I tried “JEALOUS” using a metronome this time. That’s why I think you got that impression that it “clicked”. Die: Well, I think we should had done it more freely.  Not using a metronome click as we used to do, the tempo of the song is determined by the feeling of the venue. Certainly, at that time, everyone was doing it like that so I wish we could do it in that way this time too. Toshiya: Yes, that way is a possibility as well. If we have a chance, I think it would be good to do it in such a highly flexible situation. Well, from time to time there will be different rhythms within the band, if the members are simply playing at that moment and doing well, I think the audience will listen to it naturally  and will go with it comfortably. -I see. So, it’s been said for a while you were in the process of making an album, has your mindset changed since when you were working in “Ochita koto no aru Sora", which was done in a relatively early stage of this Corona situation, until now? Die: For me personally, I don't think it has changed. From the beginning, my feelings are heading towards a new album. We are releasing a single this time, but we were working on arranging different songs in parallel, so the mood is basically the same. We haven't been able to play lives since last year due to the corona, but that doesn't mean we've changed the way we make it. Basically, it hasn’t changed our way of working remotely. “When I listened to the melody, I felt the hope that "I'm sure we can make something beyond our imagination next time." (Toshiya) -So, how about you, Toshiya? T: Personally, there have been quite a few changes during that time. The world situation has changed due to the Corona situation and I wondered if we could released the single we made and if the fans would listen to it. I want to play concerts but I can’t do it……how could say it?....this is my point of view but….it’s like I didn’t know what’s the purpose of the band, it’s a bit confusing for me. It's a big thing for me to think that way. Well, now I feel like I have no choice but to move forward. Until that seemed like that, I was thinking where I should rely on, I felt like, where should I set a goal? -Do you mean now after such a period? I wonder if there was a moment in which those feelings you had went up as the new songs for the album took shape. Toshiya: That's right. I haven't seen the goal yet, but I'm working on pre-production with the band right now. After that there will be a period in which the songs will be released. I was listening to the songs that the members brought there, and it was really interesting for me. -Oh, is it interesting? T: Yes. It's completely different from the songs I made myself, and when they pass through the filters of each members, they become versatile and I think that’s very interesting. I don't actually see the members face to face and interact with them but when I listened to the songs, I felt the hope that "Oh, I'm sure we can make something beyond our imagination next time". I think the other members  might also hope for that, or renewed their feelings like about it like, "I have to do my best for DIR EN GREY". Die: Well, about that you mentioned, making songs for the album ... You can see hope as Toshiya said, we can’t play lives, but we're moving forward. I feel hope in that. -That you had to work on the album during this corona situation had a positive effect on your mind. Die: But after all, there is a continuous cycle for the band, touring and producing, and one of them is missing. I don't feel the that tension there. So, while thinking “There is nothing we can about it because we can’t play lives", we are making the next new album and continuing with the hope that later we will be able to tour again. -As a result of concentrating on production in such an environment, do you feel a good response in what you are creating now? T: Of course, there is a response, but I wonder if it’s really good to pack our current feelings together in it. I haven’t found a decisive factor yet. Several complications came out quite a bit but, maybe it’s the way it is now, and it and I guess it’s not over yet. Die: Rather than “in this kind of situation”, the hurdles are simply rising. Everyday, there are many....many....(laughs) -Hahaha. Was that so? Die: Yes. It’s always the same but, if you find a keyword or a hint to the next album, it will lead you to make several songs. Now I think it is still part of our work to find that. I can’t really say at this point what kind of specific feeling is but, if we find it, we can change the shift, or it will be easier to find the direction of the album. Right now, we are exploring this aspect and we haven’t come to any conclusion yet. There will be a moment  it would be like “this is the atmosphere” and it will flow in that way, so I guess it will be easier to go that way. We have no option but explore it further. “It's been 24 years since the band was formed, and it’s like the challenges we are going through are also reflected in the MV, it’s not like we are going to sit back and rest on our laurels” (Die) -I think the song that gives you a glimpse of how the next album will be it’s the new single “Oboro”. At the time of this interview, just the 15- second MV teaser was released but….no, it already is having a strong impact! Toshiya: Hehehe Die: (Smiles)  As for the MV, the concrete idea came out from Kyo, and from that idea everyone went to do it in that direction but, well, it’s like it can’t be done without us, right? It’s been 24 years since the formation, and it seems that the things we are challenging are also reflecting in things like that. It’s not like we are going to sit back and rest on our laurels. -Yes. I feel you are a band that doesn’t know the meaning of “withering” and in a good sense, doesn’t settle down. Die: That’s right. When I was shooting the MV, I talked a bit with Kyo, I was like “Isn’t this too edgy? It’s too much”. Probably, I think that a scene like this can be shown firmly even in a MV where only 5 people play, and I think  it can be expressed in a simple form, but DIR EN GREY isn’t just there, after all, I thought we had to beat in/smash down more and more. So, the MV set this time reminded me of the atmosphere when we debuted, I was feeling like it was still aggressive and no good. -In an era when there is a call for compliance/ obedience, you must have an image of reliance. Die: Haha. But there is a part that it can’t be played (on TV etc…) (laughs). -It’s true (laughs). Toshiya: Well, so this is also part of DIR EN GREY. This talk we just had, I wonder if this scene with the five members playing is also part of what DIR EN GREY is. Personally speaking, I want to try to go to other places rather than this one at the next chance. I still don’t know what that would be, and when it comes to what we are actually going to do, I think everyone, including myself, will be concerned about it again. However, if some form remains, I would like to do something that it’s constantly evolving. -When it comes to the style of your MVs, you want to be a band that has no limits. Toshiya: That's right. For example, DIR EN GREY is gloomy, isn't it? DIR EN GREY is heavy, difficult, and intense, isn't it? Of course, I think it's an option that we can be caught like that (in a MV) but if we even want to surprise ourselves, after all I think I want us to keep working as hard as we can. I’m sure we jumped over those limits but maybe….just maybe….I think that’s  the things the 5 members are looking for…. -In 24 years of activity as a band,  if now it’s time to shake off everywhere, that’s your strength as a band. Toshiya: Yes, I think so. -So, "Oboro" is a ballad with a power and lyrics unique to DIR EN GREY, I felt  the core was made in a way to make you listen to the song and the live  performance of it in a fresh shape. It’s because each part is powerful, even though there are instruments in it that are not the usual ones in the band. As for the arrangements that the band did, was it simply a scraping work? Die: Now it’s simpler than it used to be, we’ve been focusing more on how to make the sound that’s in more powerful than actually just adding more. As I had that mental image, without overdubbing  the guitar arrangement as much as possible, I went in the direction of reducing it. It might be a bad way to say this but, I approached the arrangements with the feeling that this is what I’m going to play live later, so it was like “don’t do anything crafty/pretentious”. -It seems that you are using a Fender Jazzmaster for recording, did you do that choice because of what you just said? Die: That's right.  After all, for chord stroke parts, etc… I’m going to play with that guitar and that tone quality later. So, when I tried to use that kind of chord progression for the first time in a while, it was simple, but it felt like something fresh. It really resonated with me, and when I listened to it myself, I simply thought, "Oh, that's good" (laughs). -Hahaha. That’s good. Is that feeling of being a raw band an essential point for you? Die: Well, that's right. At the so-called chorus part,  it wasn’t  just about filling the backing with the low notes of the guitar. I also took on a new challenge to be able to see the scenery further. “I think there will surely be something that makes it fun for the band, fun to match our sounds again, there will be something that it’s going to feel interesting for sure.” (Toshiya) -I see. Also, the bass phrase is a basic one, but it’s done with an approach that makes each note stand out, including the tone quality/timbre. Toshiya: Regarding “Oboro”, I simply thought  the dynamic image of it would be the most attractive thing, so I wanted to hear each and every sound without really doing anything extra. Up until now, there were too many things we wanted to do, and we wanted to include that and this as well, I had a sound barrier, but I couldn't hear what I wanted to hear. While narrowing down the main points and making it possible to listen to each part you want to hear firmly, still, each of the members started  working on it with the idea that to be able to listen to each part of it would be the virtue of this composition. - As a result, the bass sounds with a thick sound image that has a strong presence. Toshiya: That's right. At the end, I think the part where you can hear the sound of the bass alone is quite distorted, but that is the tone through all the song, and the sound is quite distorted. However, when the sounds overlap, the low feeling is more noticeable than the distortion. Normally, if it is distorted, it tends to overlap  when you join all the parts. However, as I said earlier, each member was thinking about how they wanted to hear their own sound, and even if it is distorted very much, the sound has a strong presence. I think I was able to reach such a result firmly. -While setting up the coordination/the harmony of  the musical instruments, is your main idea oriented toward making a song “that makes people listen to it”? Toshiya: Yes, I have in mind that it’s going to become a song. After all, it’s because I’m thinking it will be a full song. However, I think at that point the band sound has become unbeatable. Die: First of all, the basics of a song (without the lyrics) start once the instrumental part is recorded.  At that point, I still have no idea what kind of song we are getting into, so after the approach of how it’s going to be the singing part actually comes, the task is replacing some parts with a backing that makes the most of the lyrics. I’m always trying to figure out how to make the lyrics stand out. -I'm looking forward to hearing "Oboro" live, but recently you announced a live performance at the Tokyo Garden Theater ("Sogai") on May 6th. After cancelling the tour and Pia Arena MM performance scheduled last year,  does this live performance with audience mean that, after all you have been through, you can see a way that the band can perform in this situation? (* It was announced that this "Sogai" live will be postponed due to the announcement of the state of emergency on April 23rd.) Toshiya: The members and the staff included talked about this a lot, but in the end, after a lot of discussions we came to the conclusion that it couldn’t be “as under these circumstances we can’t do it, we won’t do it’  but rather, the talk went into the direction of “If we don’t do it, we won’t accomplish anything”, of course, there is a national guideline for lives and we have to obey it. While thinking about that, as for DIR EN GREY, nothing will work unless we take action. If you don't take a step, nothing will happen. If you don't move now and say "Let's wait for the time to come",  it’s more like, “when will that time come?”. - That's true. Toshiya: Then, instead of waiting for the time to come, we thought it would be better to make "now" the right time for us. - While there is a change in your previous mindset, you made the best choice you can make now. Toshiya: That’s right.  Our mindset is simply different from those days. Die: As Toshiya said, if you don't experience a live performance during Corona, nothing will come out, and if you simply say, “we won't do a live concert during Corona," that's all. I think we should also have the experience of a live performance under the regulations. At the moment, we can’t ask everyone to come, but it's important for the future that we don't wait without moving at all, that we take a step forward and experience this kind of live. It’s a live that was decided with no idea of how it will turn out. -Is it necessary for yourselves to continue the band in the future? Is it also a trigger/spark for you? Toshiya: Yes. We felt that we couldn't get anything unless we acted on our own to get something. We had a discussion about what we could do while following the guidelines, and we thought that it was the live concert that would be the spark/trigger for us, so I would like to take on the challenge of the next live concert with that decision. As I mentioned at the beginning of this interview, I think there will surely be something that makes it fun for the band, fun to match our sounds again, there will be something that it’s going to feel interesting for sure. In addition, although there is a limit on the number of people who can attend the live, this time there will be  audience there. It’s a commonplace but, I think we can get something like a synergistic effect by colliding with the people who is going to come. - It will finally be a live  with audience in front of you. Die: That's right. However, the hurdles are still rising. You have to make a live concert following a guideline such as half of the capacity of the venue or not being able to shout/scream. I don't think it's good to say, "As the audience can’t shout/scream, we are not sure about doing it". Since we decided to do it, I think we have to do a DIR EN GREY live that has never been seen before. The future setlist and so, we have to change the method itself…. There is no point in doing it unless we get to convince all the fans who come to see us under these circumstances. “I’m glad I came”, “I’m glad I was able to see it”, things like that, I want to make a live that everyone can think of.

Is Jongho OK? Ateez maknae gets injured mid-concert, fans say 'please be okay!'
Ateez's Jongho reported to have sprained his foot mid-concert after canceling his fansign appearance the prior day due to other health complications
Tumblr media
If there is one group from the fourth generation of K-pop that has not taken a well-deserved break, it’s Ateez. The ‘Eight makes one team’ group Ateez started 2021 with the release of their seventh mini-album titled ‘Zero: Fever Part 2’ that was released in March, followed by the release of their third studio album titled ‘Into the A to Z’ in the same month. The boys then gave out splendid performances at the Mnet reality show ‘Kingdom: Legendary War’ in April only to follow it up with their comeback with ‘Zero: Fever Part 3’ in September after which the boys dropped ‘Zero: Fever Epilogue’ in December of 2021, three months since their last.
Since the release of that EP, the boys have been busy touring the world, starting with Seoul and following it with various cities in the US. Now as ‘The Fellowship: Beginning of the End’ comes to an end on January 31, Atiny (Ateez fandom) has received some sad news about Jongho’s health situation. It was reported that the maknae and vocalist of Ateez had a minor accident on the second-last day of the Ateez World Tour in Los Angeles, California.
Is Jongho okay?
The second-last day of the Ateez World Tour already started on a rough note as on the same day, it was reported that members Mingi, Yeosang, and Jongho had to cancel their fansign appearances due to persistent health issues. KQ Entertainment, the label that manages Ateez, reported that Mingi suffered from muscle pain after his concert performances and chose to miss the fansign. While the rapper suffered from muscle pain, Ateez’s visual, Yeosang skipped the fansign as he suffered from dehydration after the concerts. Jongho, the maknae of the group, reported that he was facing stomach issues and had to skip the Ateez fansign.
Fans who were worried sick after the health conditions of three out of eight Ateez members got much worse news in the day to follow as Yunho made an announcement mid-concert informing attendees about a minor accident that happened with Jongho during the concert. Yunho told fans that as they were moving around backstage, Jongho slipped and ended up spraining his ankle in the middle of the concert day. From a viral clip, fans were seen torn as they worried for the maknae of the group.
Yunho comforted fans stating that Jongho was okay and was getting treated for the sprain. This coming after the singer’s already degrading health has raised a lot of concern amongst fans who are worried about the well-being of Ateez members.
‘I hope Jongho doesn’t push himself’
Fans of Ateez have now started to worry about the wellbeing of the members as more and more members of the group report health complications. Fans are wishing Jongho a speed recovery while also hoping that the members get a well-deserved rest after the end of this schedule. One fan said, “I hope the sprain isn't that bad. Get well soon, jongho:((" One more fan said, "Jongho my love :( i hope it's not a bad sprain." Another confused fan asked, "So jongho didnt sprain his ankle the giant tmh mirror rolled over it?"
One fan said, "I really hope jongho doesnt push himself too much for the concert :( a sprain is no joke." One fan pointed, "Yeosang completing 8 makes 1 team with both his feet bc jongho is sick reminds me of how yunho did the same during kd bc mingi was on hiatus... ateez are always 8 makes 1 team :,)" Another fan said, "Ohh no our jungho please be okay."

Dissecting the Newspapers
What are those newspaper articles?
Well, I’m here to give MY interpretation of what is going on. Simply put, I think Anastasia is planning a coup to overthrow Vesuvia.
1) We have Anastasia fixing the canals
First off, Anastasia has no reason to fix the canals, she does not live in Vesuvia and her niece and nephew aren’t exactly permanent residence either. So why? These canal’s have been a long standing problem in Vesuvia’s history, no one knows who built them or why and half of them are unfinished so it’s safe to say they’ve probably been around since the city was founded. And then to have this mysterious benefactor who is putting in some very expensive resources to solve this issue? It’s to gain public approval for her and leave a positive impression on the masses (she did not actually speak publicly at the trial).
Her fixing the canals lead to her digging underground as well which seems to have resulted in the flooded district collapsing.
And speaking of public approval...
2) Nadia had to delay the masquerade
This threat of flooding is so serious Nadia delayed the masquerade. This should be a huge red flag as in all the other routes Nadia cannot cancel the masquerade. It’s obvious Nadia has a lot riding on the masquerade politically speaking. The people of Vesuvia love a good ole fashion masquerade and it’s pretty much the only reason anyone liked Lucio and did not start a revolution.
So we have a public figure who has been absent from the public eye for years who tries to offer two different events to improve her public standing. The hanging, which does not happen, and now the masquerade which is delayed. Even in the parts of the city where Lucio was always disliked and may have had their hopes riding on Nadia it just shows to them they are failing. Not to mention that now a foreigner is now fixing one of Vesuvia’s longest standing problems which obviously looks like it was always an easy fix but the Vesuvian royal family has been to incompetent to fix it. As well as now we have the flooded district being completely destroyed which is only going to hurt Nadia’s image more with the people.
In one fell swoop Tasya just ruined Nadia’s public image. Which if you want to plan a coup, it would be incredibly beneficial to have the current ruling figure fail.
3) Tasya has already won over the court
In the last book we got to see Tasya at work. Giving Valerius an incredibly expensive vineyard and Vastomil some rare worms isn’t exactly cheap. And while yes at face value this was just to convince them to rule Julian innocent I doubt it was just to rule Julian innocent on an even vote. They are indebted to her and have a great respect for her now as well.
And although she only has 2/5 members of the court it won’t be hard to win over the others.
4) a renowned expert in poison has been found mysteriously dead
Acontius Dogwood has been found dead, why would they include this seemingly irrelevant individual’s death for a teaser image? Well I’ll give you the biggest hint and it’s in the pudding.
Tumblr media
If you don’t remember Nightshade allow me to remind you of this lovely quote from Julian
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This poison is incredibly dangerous in the wrong hands but it’s only safe to be touched because it needs to be distilled. The distilling process for a poison can be pretty complicated and would need an expert to do so successfully. And an expert was just mysteriously killed (probably by his own creation). If he’s used to crafting this poison specifically for overthrowing kings he’s probably smart enough not to live in a city where its being used.
Until what I believe is Anastasia asking for a poison to be crafted for her. I think she killed him to keep him quiet and no one to be the wiser. And where do I think this poison is? Well let’s take a look at the flower itself.
Tumblr media
A pale blue with darker veins inside of it.... Now lets take a look at that necklace that Anastasia gifted Portia real quick.
Tumblr media
A pale blue with darker veins inside of it...
I think this necklace is a Chekhov’s Gun, its an incredibly odd thing to be drawing attention to as much as it has been, with even Valerius making a comment on it. More specifically I think it’s a reference to the Game of Throne’s necklace that Sansa wears at the purple wedding. It’s a pale blue necklace that has one of it’s dangling gems removed during the events as the gems hold a poison to overthrow a king... and subsequently frames her for murder.
Another point is how in the paid scene with Portia at the pillow fight it’s noted that had taken the necklace off. Now you could make an argument that this is simply because Portia didn’t want any damage to fall to the necklace but I think this was a way to make sure we the readers don’t accidentally break this gem containing an incredibly dangerous poison.
5) What is going on with the crabmen?
Ok, they aren’t actually half crab hybrids.
Tumblr media
But what people are seeing at men in carapaces running around under ground. So I believe that they aren’t crabs, but rather men in armor. We know Anastasia is in charge of repairing the canals which has lead to her having to go underground. I think the fixing the canals is also a cover to get her to sneak armed troops underground which people are seeing. And they seem to be quite territorial and aggressive as it’s scaring the citizens... almost like they don’t want to be seen.
6) The storms
Ok, this wasn’t part of my original theory because I thought the storms were the Devil getting mad at delaying the masquerade but I saw @thesanguinerose ‘s post talking about how Julian and Portia’s parents were killed in a storm that mysteriously on the Devorak children and Tasya survived.
And now that there are these violent storms brewing in Vesuvia... in the only route where Tasya is present raises some major concerns. Tasya explained to Portia that she had offered to buy their parent’s merchant ship to add to her fleet but they denied her. And then said parents happened to die out at see on a violent storm with Tasya present. It is definitely suspicious and I think these storms are connected to Tasya and are following her around. Perhaps in the same way that the plague followed Lucio around for having an uncompleted deal.
She does seem quite well traveled and despite being a baroness isn’t at her country ruling like she probably should. Probably to avoid destroying her city but there is no reason she can’t use this to an advantage. But I am making a lot of leaps with this one that I’m not even 100% about.
7) Foreshadowing in Portia’s Route
In Portia’s route there is a certain... theme to it. Portia is pretty bent on solving the mysteries of everything going on around her. Portia in general has a real penchant for snooping and keeping secrets. So we already know what one of the bigger mysteries of the overall story of The Arcana is “Why did Julian kill Lucio" but the problem is... Portia already solved it. She solved it before anyone else did back in book X (Yes Muriel’s route answers the question of if Julian did it at the start but not why) and yet we still have a massive story.
There seems to be a theme in the secondary routes that they take a different approach to the world and story than the main three. Portia has been following the story pretty much beat by beat so far but there is something incredibly special about Portia. She has no connection to the Devil at all.
If you follow (I believe it’s @apprenticeofcups ‘s meta) the idea that Lucio is only as big as a threat in the route based on that character of that route you have an odd situation where... Portia doesn’t know Lucio at all. Portia has never even made a deal with a major arcana like all the other members of the route. Currently, Portia’s biggest obstacle and threat to her personal morals IS Anastasia. It’s not crazy to think that she’d become Portia’s biggest villain and a major villain in general.
Here is also some fun screencaps to show some foreshadowing about Portia’s route maybe holding something a bit bigger. She used to pretend she was a lost princess and says these words exactly:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And well, she might not be betrayed for her own personal throne... the throne she serves is about to be betrayed...

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
The night shifts weren’t all bad. From time to time, they were even as good as “pretty straight forward”. They proved especially useful when trying to finish patient notes and random admin that always got left to the very end of the shift. Perhaps they’d endure a tidy-out of the stock cupboards if the crew was feeling generous. Since O’Brien had taken up his post at the hospital years earlier, he had insisted upon mandatory training updates for the ER units every three to four months (the national average was about once a year) so the team were regularly reminded not to set fire to their computers and not to leave boxes in places people could trip over. You’d be surprised how often both those things happened in an emerging crisis.
“I swear he thinks we’re idiots half the time.” Complained Jack, his head now glued to the palm of his hand. Jack was hurtling towards an early retirement thanks to an ever-increasing distrust of the corporate environment ER departments found themselves in. We trained to save lives, he’d say, not file stat reports. He was so right, it hurt.
The crew was sat round the reception desk. The ER was empty except for a local homeless man the team allowed in from time to time to sleep off his latest drunken adventures.
“Who doesn’t know how to bend their knees when lifting something heavy?” Jack asked again.
“Ryan for one.” Sarah joked, pointing her cold cup of tea towards the fellow nurse in question. Ryan was a tall and skinny guy, not dissimilar to Alexander Skarsgard in the right light but with less charm although he had left a few of the interns swooning of late. Shanna quite liked him, too.
“One time, Sarah. One time and I suffered for it greatly.” Ryan remarked, spinning a full 360 in his swivel chair. “Did you tick ‘agree’ or ‘strongly agree’ for question eleven?”
“Oh, if you don’t tick ‘strongly agree’ even if you only ‘agree’, they mark you down a couple of percentage points.” Entered Audrey, slamming down a pile of files on the desk beside Sarah. Their nightly routine just got more interesting. “Just get it over with. It’s not worth the effort. It’s just O’Brien being obsessed with stats again. He turns everything into a competition. I swear it’s unhealthy.”
Ryan looked momentarily confused before returning to face his computer screen. He re-read the question for the fifth time and rubbed his eyes in resignation. Something about 3am made this far too complicated.
“When did you even find time to do this, Aud?” Jack asked, turning back to Sarah and Audrey in time to witness their shared look self-satisfaction. “I’ve been sat here for half an hour and am still only part way through the first section.”
“I logged in at home earlier.” she responded before catching Sarah’s quizzical look. “Well, Michael did most of it for me.”
“Fucking hell!” exclaimed Jack, chucking his pen on the table, giving up. “Got no chance then, have I? Michael’s a bloody genius. Hey, how much for him to do mine?”
“Normally I’d say $100 but he’s pretty cheap these days.” shrugged Audrey. “Probably a fancy cigar would do.”
“He still grumpy about the you-know-what?” whispered Sarah to her friend when the guys started joshing between themselves.
Audrey leaned back on the desk beside her and took the mug from Sarah’s hands to take a sip, grimacing slightly at the sweetness. For some reason, Sarah had to have at least three sugars in her tea if she was drinking it post-midnight. It helped to keep her more alert apparently. She didn’t drink it like that at any other time of the day. “No more than usual. Seems like we’re both unlucky in that department at the moment.”
Sarah smiled at her in acknowledgement, lips thin before biting the inside of her cheek.
Following their last meet-up, Chris had been decidedly quiet. Too quiet almost. It was weird. He hadn’t messaged her. He hadn’t called or visited their apartment except to collect a parcel he had left. Sarah has been out for a run at the time and had felt silently glad to have missed him. He hadn’t updated his twitter and there had been multiple sports events occurring that would have guaranteed a humblebrag or five. Shanna had pledged to buy rib-eye steaks for a Saturday night meal during a Celtics game and he had cancelled at the last minute citing an interview he had conveniently forgotten. Even Audrey thought it was weird. If anything was guaranteed to get his attention and bring him out of whatever funk he was in, it was the promise of sports and a ‘Grade A’ barbeque.
Shanna merely put it down to his laziness or him having something better turn up. Scott had started replacing Chris around their apartment, wanting to get some of his own distance from the tricky Zach situation and it helped her feel better knowing he was at least in touch with him if Shanna wasn’t. He was evidently still alive.
Sarah decided to swap a couple of daytime stints to partner up with Audrey for the nights. She needed the comfort of working with a good friend to calm her down from whatever ledge her anxiety had placed her on.
“You know that he’ll come back, right?” Audrey interrupted her thoughts. Maybe Sarah spoke too soon. “Haven’t you got that birthday thing for Lisa coming up?”
That trip was a couple of weeks away yet. She was trying to bank some reasonable excuses but everything sounded lame in the cold light of day and Lisa was never going to accept her not coming as well. Surely things would have smoothed themselves out by then?
“This won’t just fix itself, hun, you’ll need to speak to him eventually. And the sooner the better.”
It was like Audrey had a hotline straight into Sarah’s psyche. It was unnerving at the best of times. Sarah knew she was right of course. It’s just, a little bit of distance would be a good thing, right? Even Chris himself had offered that advice from time to time, and stressing herself out at this point almost seemed counterintuitive.
“I reckon you could go in an hour or so if you wanted.” Audrey offered, nudging her friend with her elbow to bring her back into the room. “It’s dead out there.”
“I hope not.” Sarah joked, trying to lighten the mood. “We’d be shit at our jobs if that was the case.”
Audrey laughed for the first time since Sarah could remember that day. It was moments like this that reminded her of why she enjoyed working alongside her so much, and why she didn’t mind if it resulted in overtime.
“You wanna take patient referrals while I take the EPRs?”
“How can I refuse an offer like that?” Sarah picked up the dozen or so documents sat in front of her and grabbed the nearest chair. Audrey told her she’d put the kettle on and nudged the guys still glued to their screens. Ryan had pretty much given up logical thinking and was now ticking random boxes. Jack was cursing under his breath. O’Brien was going to be in for a real treat when he could finally tabulate the responses.
It was nearing 6.20am when Sarah and Audrey finally packed up to go. Matt and Stephanie had just arrived to take over for the morning, bringing a fresh perspective for the day. There wasn’t much for them to catch up on so it should be a smooth few hours at least. Sarah even ran a mop through the staff locker room as an added gift – Steph was a notorious clean freak – nearly tripping Greg up in the process.
He’d been on leave for the past fortnight and his hair was a little longer than she remembered. A five o’clock shadow graced the lower part of his face and it suited him more than she thought it would. He had kept up with the informal tie-less attire and he seemed to be, dare she it, enjoying himself.
“God, I’m so sorry.” She held her hands up in a mock mea culpa. “I was just gonna put it away before heading out. It was a stupid place to leave it.”
“Did you not take the Health and Safety refresher?” he joked, rebalancing himself and trying to play down the redness creeping into his cheeks from the embarrassment of temporarily losing his footing in front of her.
“You gonna rat me out to O’Brien? ‘Cos you know as well as I do that he doesn’t need yet another reason to know he’s right.” She shifted the mop and bucket and placed them back in the supply closet before reaching for her bag again.
“Nah, don’t worry about it.” He moved passed her before turning to face her again. “Tell you the truth, I ghosted the last couple of tabs myself. Who knew there were so many ways to ask questions about standing in elevators?”
Sarah rolled her eyes in acknowledgement. “Yeh. I can’t wait to have the team meeting when he realises we’ve all pretty much done the same thing. That’s gonna be fun. I might finally take some of my holiday.”
“Yeh, good plan. Hey listen,” His words stopped her in her tracks, feet from the exit. “Um, I know it’s been a while but I was wondering if you might want to reschedule that tennis match some time? Or if not, we could get some dinner or something? There’s that new sushi place on Reagan Street. It’s meant to be really good if you fancy it?”
She was indeed familiar with that very restaurant thanks to the glowing reviews she had been unable to avoid since it opened. Audrey had only mentioned it a mere thousand times in her presence. Word was that bookings were now months in advance so she wasn’t sure how Greg was hoping to find a table unless he wanted to make plans with her in November. Given the number of commitments he always appeared to have going on, it wouldn’t be completely outside the realm of possibility.
“Wow, I thought that place was fully booked?”
“Yeh, it is, but I went to college with one of the investors and he’s promised me a one-off.”
Of course he did. Sarah bit her bottom lip to stop herself from chuckling out loud, imagining Audrey’s face when she would inevitably find out. To be honest, she was genuinely surprised he was still showing a minor interest in her. When she finally made eye contact with him, his earnestness was practically shining. Had he always had perfect skin?
“Um…” That was a good start, she thought.
“Honestly, it’s not a big deal if you’d rather not.” He helpfully pre-empted her awkward rejection but she wasn’t sure if that was a good thing. “I’ve been meaning to go is all and I knew you liked sushi and figured it might be fun? They have live Jazz on Sunday nights.”
When did he find out she liked sushi? And live Jazz? Just how much had Audrey told him about her?
Realising she probably looked perplexed, she shuffled her shoulder strap back up onto her shoulder and tried to relax the awkwardness setting in between them. It was still quiet and no one was within earshot that she could figure out of her peripheral vision.
“It’s not you, Greg, I promise. It’s just, I’m not really looking to get into anything right now. With anyone. Plus, we work together and…I’m sorry. I hope that’s OK?”
“Hey, look, I promise it won’t be awkward. There’s absolutely no expectations from me and if you change your mind, just let me know, yeh? I literally know no one else who likes Sashimi so I can’t waste my only chance to get a table.” He chuckled and she felt more at ease.
“If it’s any consolation, I’m a pretty crap date.” She smiled at him as she edged herself down the hall, putting space between them both literally and figuratively. “You wouldn’t be missing out.”
“Oh, I doubt that somehow.” He returned her smile. “I’m serious, though. Just let me know. Anytime. No expiration date.”
And with that, she had been left dumbfounded by two men in the space of a single week.
It would have been easier to get the early morning bus home at this time, as tired as she was starting to feel. She hadn’t slept well in the last few days and she had a creeping nausea from the lack of proper rest. The walk and crisp, fresh air might do her some good. It was practically full daylight even at this hour, and it was sometimes fun to watch people on their own way to work, huffing along, trying not to drop their coffees.
The out-of-town school bus passed her a few minutes out from her apartment and as she rounded the corner, she got this weird sense that someone was watching her. Another corner turned and she could see her building in the near distance. Still, she couldn’t shake it. She stopped, pretending to fumble for her phone in her pocket and turned around swiftly to see a sweaty Chris stop a few steps behind her.
It took her a moment to register it was in fact him, his beard fuller and a Red Sox cap pulled down low over his eyes. He had sweats and sneakers on and looked like he was on a run. Honestly, if someone else had spotted him from this distance, they would have worried he was going to attack her.
“Hey,” she said, turning to fully face him. “What are you doing out at this time?”
He didn’t respond at first. He shuffled from one foot to the other before grounding himself and taking a couple of steps towards her. Again, he shuffled back a step like he was rethinking his move. She didn’t appreciate seeing him like this, so unsure of himself.
“Five months out from filming some pre-shoots so figured I’d make a start.” He finally spoke. Not a really a smile but he at least sounded OK.
“Cool.” She said, nodding back at him. “Um, I’m not sure if Shanna is awake yet but do you want to come inside for some water or coffee?”
“Yeh, that’d be great. Thanks.”
She turned to continue walking on. For a few long moments, he stayed walking slightly behind her. A couple more strides and he had decided to catch up. The last time it had taken this long to walk this same street, she had been so drunk she had narrowly avoided falling into her neighbour’s front garden.
“Five months? You’re not that out of shape.” She tried to make a joke. It was the only thing she could think of. Audrey would be eye-rolling like a champ if she could see them now.
Chris knew she was trying to make small talk now so he decided to indulge her. It was a fair response, he thought - he was doing OK - as he followed her up the stairs deliberately keeping two or three behind her in an effort to keep it casual.
“Oh, y’know. I fluctuate pretty easily. A few pizzas here and there and it’s game over.”
They walked into her kitchen and she had been right in assuming Shanna was still asleep. Unless she had awoken really early but that was highly unlikely, unless there was a sale at Ted Baker she didn’t know about.
He lingered in the doorway while she searched the fridge for a bottle of water. Grabbing one from the back, she turned to hand it to him expecting him to be within an arm’s reach from her but he had been distracted by something down the hall before turning back to her. Gratefully, he accepted it and walked into the kitchen to take up his usual spot leaning against the counter.
“Sorry, did you say you wanted a coffee?” She offered.
“Nah, I’m good. Can’t really take caffeine until this afternoon.”
“Sorry. I always forget how strict it is.” She apologised, offering him a sympathetic smile.
He took a long swig from the bottle, not breaking eye contact from her. “No need to apologise. You OK? Night shift?”
“Yeh. Pretty quiet, thankfully.”
“I’ve always meant to ask but what is it like, a night shift? I can’t work out if it would be worse or not.”
She understood what he meant and laughed. “It can go either way to be honest but it’s been quiet the last few nights. Nothing crazy. I caught up with some paperwork, so…” She shrugged again, acutely aware of how boring she must sound.
He nodded at her. “Aren’t people supposed to be crazier in the summertime?”
“Well, kids are around more and families tend to spend more time together, so…”
The apartment was unnervingly quiet now which was weird. She could hear the uptake in traffic outside which provided some relief that perhaps he couldn’t hear her heart beating out of her chest. She could make out some small sweat patches on his hoodie and it did something to her that she wasn’t expecting. Shaking the thought from her head, she turned to switch the kettle off.
“What?” He asked.
She jerked her head back around to face him. “Huh?”
“You were thinking of something. Your neck just went red.” He smiled, tilting his head at her and relishing the look of surprise making its way over her features, knowing he’d caught her out.
That was news to her. She knew she had “tells” but a red neck was not usually one of them. How come no one had ever told her about this?
“I can’t tell if you’re joking with me or not.” She inquired, playfully narrowing her eyes at him in an effort to lighten the mood.
He shrugged a shoulder at her, a smirk starting to cross his fine features. Joshing with her was good. She’d take that. A small step in the right direction.
“Sometimes, it’s really obvious. You get it when you’re embarrassed about something, or when you try to lie. I’d never really noticed it before, but...” He paused. His expression started to turn more thoughtful and she wished he’d just continue to make fun of her instead.
“Guess I won’t be playing poker anytime soon.” She finished the thought for him.
“Yeh, no, you’d be rubbish at that. Just terrible.” He took another swig from his bottle and waited for her to throw something at him.
“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.”
The room went quiet again. She stirred her mug of coffee and offered him another chance at one which he politely refused although his discipline was waning slightly now he could smell it.
“So this is fine.” He said after a couple of minutes, nodding in a slightly exaggerated manner. He looked out of the kitchen window. “We can do this, right? No awkwardness. No embarrassment. Just normal, everyday conversation.”
“’Course,” she nodded in agreement.
“Start as we mean to go on, right?”
She nodded again. This felt like a trap and she couldn’t put her finger on why. Chris had a knack for saying and doing two different things at the same time, an intimidating ability that often put people on edge if he thought it would serve his purpose, whatever that may be. Probably the actor in him. When you called him out, he would aggressively defend himself which only served to prove the point you were making in the first place.
Scott was the only one, truly, who knew when it was happening. It had taken Sarah years to get to a similar position but now, she wasn’t sure she was remotely close to it.
“It’s as good a starting point as any, I guess.” She shrugged again, sipping from her cup.
“So there’s no need to ignore me then.”
“I haven’t been ignoring you, have I?”
“You tell me. I’m just pre-empting it is all. I’m just saying we can still interact, you and me, if we need to. Like, it doesn’t always have to be in social settings with other people around.” He took a final drink from his bottle and turned to locate the recycling pot stashed away in the corner. Even with a mundane task, he always looked cool doing it.
“So don’t worry about it.”
“Alright then. That’s good to know.” She shot him a raised eyebrow which he caught and returned with a sly smirk. “I’m just trying to be sensible. We have to get this right or else there’s no point.”
“I know, I get that, too.” If he wasn’t attempting to be serious before, he was now. He had a hand on his hip and seemed to have grown a few inches in height. “What do you think I’m trying to say?”
“I…think I’m on the backfoot again and it’s weird.” She held a hand up in defence.
“Hey, I’m just doing what we agreed, OK? I’m just following your rules.”
“They’re not rules.” She struggled to regulate the volume in her voice in case she disturbed Shanna. “And you’re making it sound like I’m controlling the situation when I’m not. We both agreed on this. There’s no point being difficult about it.”
Was he being difficult? Yes. Obviously, he was. He wasn’t happy. He wasn’t sure what he was feeling but happy definitely wasn’t it. Things were out of sorts and he hadn’t been able to eat carbs or sugar for four days so the withdrawal symptoms certainly weren’t helping. He should go easier on her. She was doing the thinking for the both of them. He should learn to be more grateful for that.
He scratched the back of his head and let out an audible sigh in frustration. “I’ll try harder, I promise. We’ve got that cabin thing coming up with Mom, so…I promise I’ll be good.”
He imitated the scout salute and she smiled at him, a smile not quite reaching her eyes.
Another night shift and Audrey and was starting to get suspicious. No one willingly switched for a night shift. For one thing, there was a disproportionate amount of recovery time. A couple of night shifts often took in excess of a week to recover from; a week that a nurse definitely did not have to spare.
“He been buggin’ you?” she asked, finally growing tired of the silence.
“Who?” Sarah looked up from the cabinet. “No, not really. We haven’t really spoken.”
“So why are you ignoring him?”
“I’m not ignoring him! Why does everyone think that?”
“Who’s everyone?”
Crap. Audrey had her there. Sarah open and closed her mouth without a sound coming out. She took a breath. “He’s not bugging me. He’s not. I’m just trying to limit the times we’re in the same place at the same time.”
“Huh, you’d think he would at least allow you to have peace in your own home.”
“Well, to be fair, he hasn’t been around all that much, but…at least I don’t have to worry about him showing up unannounced. It’s stupid but I feel way more awkward about him than I thought I would. It’s like I can’t even stand to be under his gaze.”
Audrey glanced at her friend, wishing she could offer some words of comfort. Even for someone as verbose as she normally was, she was finding it a struggle. Sarah wasn’t much looking for words of comfort at the given time either. She was all too aware of the predicament she was in and how much responsibility laid at her feet. In her mind, waiting it out was the only logical solution she could come up with. The only logical solution that didn’t require more conversations with someone who could feasibly run rings around her “theory” that if they just stayed apart for a little while, they would suddenly and magically forget about the past couple of months.
They stayed filing documents in silence again, the air seemingly getting thicker.
“You ever spoken with someone and it’s like they’re thinking the complete opposite of what’s coming out of their mouth?” Sarah huffed while shoving the cabinet drawer closed.
“Not really. That person’s usually me.”
“But why?” she asked. “Why can’t you just be normal?”
“I mean, it’s not my go-to response of course. It’s normally reserved for occasions when I am trying to indulge someone because I know they’re talking bullshit. Like, when I know Mike has been gambling but he tries to deny it? It’s just easier to figure him out that way.”
Sarah froze to the spot, looking at her friend. She breathed a heavy sigh and turned to lean back on the table behind her and crossed her arms. She stared at her shoes for a second.
“Chris is a smart guy. I’ll give him that.” Audrey muttered loudly so she was sure Sarah could hear.
“Give me something! I’m your friend here.” She implored her before chuckling to herself at Audrey’s face and her own apparent lack of self-awareness.
“You know what I think? You’ve probably got withdrawal symptoms from the all the amazing sex you’ve had and now you’re sulking. I think you should get back on that horse and let him fuck you again. That’s what this is.”
Sarah eyed her friend again. For once, she would love to hear someone tell her that she was right. “That’s really not helping, y’know.”
“And this is?!” Audrey’s shriller tone cut through the dry air, smacking Sarah right in the face. “Honey, this isn’t healthy. You hiding out in the hospital and treating it like your own solace is not healthy at all. I love you but you are your own worst enemy.”
“Alright, thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you for your unswerving efforts to be honest with me at all times and not, like a normal pal, be comforting in any way.” Sarah comically bowed to her friend before considering leaving the office. She would have followed through with the idea as well if it wasn’t for the cosy warmth of O’Brien’s office versus the coldness of the ER department thanks to a leaking pipe. “It’s difficult. I’m sorry. I don’t wanna fall out with you, Audrey.”
Audrey just smiled at her. “I don’t know why you think you have to be the beacon of morality all the time, Sarah. Take a look around. No one else is. We all out here just trying to live our lives as best we can and a part of that is taking advantage of moments of happiness when we find them.”
Something about what Audrey was saying did resonate with her but comparing two months of happiness with Chris to ten years with Shanna was not something she could in good conscience do. Shanna was her security blanket. She provided a comfort of living with someone with shared life experience, of knowing how little you thought about yourself because you were given up as a baby. Honestly, from the very first day they had met, Sarah felt lucky to know her.
Yes, Shanna could be immature at times. Maybe a little selfish. She would often get carried away with trivial things and wasn’t the most reliable person, but what Sarah got in return was worth that and more. Her family enjoyed highlighting the maternal care Sarah would have to provide to someone who was seven months older than she was, but honestly it didn’t matter.
Maybe this was one of the rare occasions where Audrey was wrong.
Chris was a fling at best, Sarah told herself, when she was lying in bed struggling to fall asleep. When she was cold and missing his arms around her. They were both having shitty times and they both got something out of it. That was what Chris had said himself at the very beginning.
Chris 08.15am: You home? Shanna said you were working late again
It was like he knew she would be thinking about him.
Chris 08.17am: I really dont want u ignoring me all the time. This is hard for me right now as well
Fuck.
Sarah 08.21am: I kno. I’m so sorry I made you feel like that :(
He didn’t respond. She thought she saw the tell-tale three dots of him writing something but nothing appeared. Giving up on sleep, she got up and headed into the kitchen. Shanna had left her some bacon in the fridge and a fresh bread bun on the side so she turned on the grill and set about making some coffee.
She felt strangely awake for this time and the apartment was nice and warm from the bright sunshine streaming in from all corners. Maybe a run would help. Or a cold shower.
Chris 08.44am: I wanna be honest with u but I dont think u want that
Chris 08.45am: so what do i do??
Fuck knows.
Chris 08.51am: Can I come over?
Sarah 08.54am: that’s not a good idea
Chris 08.55am: cos you know what will happen?
Chris 08.56am: what does that tell you??
She was sure he was nursing some kind of hangover or, quite possibly, he was still a little bit drunk. There were two responses she could give, she figured. The first would be her usual denial and perhaps an excuse that she was busy or working later than planned. The second, and ultimately the one she opted for, was to agree with him.
Sarah 09.05am: I know what it tells me. That’s why I’m saying you shouldn’t come over
Another three dots followed. There was only so many times they could go around and around in circles and as much as Audrey’s words made sense to her, it felt like she had to make the effort to regain some normality.
He didn’t respond. She stared at her phone for an age but nothing came through. Maybe he got the message? Maybe he had fallen asleep. She was both relieved and suspicious; Chris wasn’t someone who backed down from an argument when he thought he was right. He had said as much himself.
She turned the grill off, having lost her appetite. A run might make more sense and could help clear her head.
She couldn’t sit around waiting for Chris to make his next move.

[CN] Kiro’s “Happy Catcher” date (eng) PART ONE 🍓
Tumblr media
this was the most annoying thing to post, but thankfully, I’m able to post it as long as I break it up! I’m sorry for the long wait, Tumblr has been giving me difficulties recently — but I hope this translation can make up for it! you can find victor’s over at @cheri-translates ^^
--
PART ONE vv
The weather today seems exceptionally good. The sunlight illuminates the whole living room through the windows without any hesitation. Watching the green leaves on the balcony glowing in a faint golden light, my frown that was originally hard set finally loosened a little.
But then my eyes fell on the computer screen, and I couldn’t help sighing again.
MC: The project this time has really wiped out my free will…
Some time ago, I did a long-term strategic analysis . In order to make corresponding adjustments, I took over this very difficult project. Unexpectedly, after half a month, I was helpless.
I took a deep breath and picked up my mobile phone, trying to take a short break to ease my anxieties about work.
“Ding dong!” A text message appears before my eyes ---
Kiro: Come on, Miss Potato Chips! ^^
That bright face seemed to pass through these short characters, appearing in front of me. The mood became clear for a moment, but the next second became complicated. I originally made an appointment with Kiro to go out together today. But, because of work, I had to cancel the trip.
MC: Ok, see you next week!
I took a deep breath after pressing send, continuing to type the mountain of information into the keyboard. Just solve these difficult tasks, and you can go to Kiro.
Thinking of this, the speed of my typing on the keyboard has increased a lot in both of my hands.
Tap tap --- tap --
At this time, there was an irregular knock on the door, and the familiar rhythm made me react instantly. I went quickly to open the door, and found a cute teddy bear on the ground. I made the mistake of touching the recording switch when I picked it up.
Little bear: Hi, I am Little Bear! There will be surprises when you pinch my nose!
A familiar sound was emitted from the teddy bear’s body, and even though it was changed, I could recognise it at once.
I couldn’t help laughing out loud. I reached out and pinched its nose.
Suddenly, a touch of gold appeared in my sight. Not waiting for my reaction, I was quickly drawn into a passionate embrace.
Kiro: Look, I didn’t lie to you! You pinched its nose and I appeared~~
MC: It really is you! Why are you here?
Kiro released me and put his hands behind his back, looking at me with shiny eyes.
Kiro: Because I received a call from Miss Potato Chips, I want to do something for you.
As he talked, a small card was pushed into my hand. When I looked down, my eyes met a handwritten line--
Happiness Catcher -- Mr. Zhou Qiluo.
Kiro: I am now an excellent Happiness Catcher. According to my “survey”, for some reason, ___’s happiness isn’t in her home.
MC: What?
Kiro nodded. The golden tips of his hair danced up and down with his nodding movement like a faeries’.
Kiro: In order to not cause a catastrophe, we have to find it quickly. So without further ado, let’s go now!
At his urging, I quickly packed up in confusion before being pulled out.
PART TWO vv
On the way, no matter how hard I tried, Kiro wouldn’t tell me where he was taking me. A mysterious look on his face gives me high expectations for this “journey”.
Finally, we came to the entrance of Mi Xue forest. I saw him touching his chin pretentiously. His eyes squinted, and even his nose trembled slightly. He seems to be searching for something.
Kiro: According to my professional analysis, it should have escaped to here. This is absolutely correct.
MC: You said the word “Happy Catcher”... How do we get it back?
Kiro: Of course, the most primitive and concise method is used.
The next second, he showed a sly smile. His hands made a horn around his mouth, and then he took a sharp breath--
Kiro: ___’s happiness, where are you, come out quickly!!!
His voice echoed in the forest. Except for the flock of birds that were frightened into escaping, there was silence all around. I can’t help looking at him a little jokingly.
MC: This simple and concise method doesn’t seem to work, but it does at least scare most nearby birds away.
Kiro: Because I want to find her happiness quickly, little birds, I’m not sorry!
He stuck out his tongue playfully at the sky. Then, putting his hand into a trump-like shape again, he put them up to my mouth.
Kiro: I’ve found the key to the question. It seems that only you, the master, can call it. It may appear then.
MC: Still, towards…
Seeing the expectant look, I could only swallow what I originally wanted to say halfway through.
MC: ...My happiness…. Where are you?
Kiro: Only I can hear you at this volume. Let’s shout together?
He looked at me seriously, and I blinked. Seeing this gorgeous smiling face, I nodded.
Kiro: Let me count down! 3, 2, 1--
With the countdown falling, the voices of Kiro and I resounded throughout the forest. It seems that the traces of depression that had hidden before had also been vented from my heart.
Kiro: ___, look, there seems to be movement in the grass ahead!
As soon as I turned my head, I seemed to see Kiro’s hand waving quickly near the grass. I walked towards it in a few steps and commented that I saw a crumpled ball of paper lying in the centre.
MC: This is…?
Kiro: Open it and take a look. Maybe there’s a clue!
Looking at his excited expression, even if I have one or two guesses in my heart, I still look forward to opening the little ball of paper.
MC: Close your eyes and take a deep breath three times beneath the sky?
Kiro leaned over and read the contents of the paper ball with me. He pretended to be clueless, which made me laugh secretly in my heart. The acting is pretty decent….
But in order to cooperate with the careful arrangement of the “Happy Catcher”, I still closed my eyes obediently,  my chest slowly lifting. I take a breath and another one, and clearly smell the fragrance of vegetation. The soil under my feet seemed to become soft, and my entire person was immersed in a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.
I think I understand the purpose of this direction.
However, in the last breath, a soft and hot flush fell on my face. Before I opened my eyes, a soft whisper slowly sounded in my ears.
Kiro: Congratulations to ___ for triggering an additional reward.
I opened my eyes. Kiro seemed just as innocent as he had when I closed them, so it seems that the moment just now was a sweet “sign”.
Kiro: Just when you completed those instructions, I found another clue!
Kiro proudly pointed to the bushes not far away, like a playful teenager who couldn’t wait to claim credit. But, looking at his bulging pockets, I can’t help but tease him.
MC: Your pocket is bulging today, have you hidden a lot of good things?
[not me laughing at this line omg]
Kiro: No, it’s all the things that make you happy.
He nodded calmly and admitted this without concealing anything. Such a straightforward attitude stunned me, and I hurried down to pick up the second paper ball-
….%....&%¥……%¥
[that’s what the screen says I swear, it’s not just keysmash lolol]
I looked at the symbols on the paper ball in shock. Kiro quickly noticed my expression.
Kiro: Oops! I threw the wrong one!
Hurriedly, Kiro picked out a handful of paper balls from his pocket, and rooted through them one by one. I turned my head and found that each piece of paper was full of different instructions, seemingly to be prepared to deal with many different situations.
After me, Kiro turned around. He noticed my eyes filled with curiosity. Finally, one of his fingers landed on a piece of paper. He gave a satisfied and mysterious smile.
Kiro: Although it was a small accident that just happened, the clue was still “found” by us!
A wrinkled note appeared in front of my eyes -- follow me with a piece of mind!
In the next second, Kiro slowly opened his palm to me, as if to echo the instructions on the note. I clasped his hand tightly without hesitation, and held it in the air.
MC: All of my actions are subjected to Kiro’s command!

An Open Letter to Nikole Hannah-Jones from a Howard Faculty Member
Tumblr media
Welcome to The Mecca, Sister! You are now part of the greatest collection of black academic excellence the nation has ever known. Your membership here is fitting. In prior semesters, I have assigned excerpts from “The 1619 Project” and its corollary materials to my Howard students. This is transformative work, creating scholars and inciting scholarship in students for whom the unfiltered history of enslavement and near-enslavement is new. Students who were vaguely aware of the cowhide’s blunt accuracy discover for the first time that enslavement included constant hunger, a lack of adequate clothing or shelter, the ubiquitous threat of rape, and the routine exposure to illness. They learn about the lack of white courage that led to the failure of Reconstruction. And the depth of white fragility that created constant encumbrances which hobbled black progress for another century. Because of your excellence in the field of Journalism and Media, students met Jacobs and Douglass, Cooper and DuBois, Hurston and Wright, Baraka and Giovanni, Morrison and Coates. So, the truth is that the start of your tenure at Howard University is not the beginning of your footprint here.
Accordingly, I had been following the details of your pending appointment in Chapel Hill, I signed one of the digital petitions demanding that your tenure case be treated the same as the white candidates who preceded you, and I flashed to anger as the details emerged of those racist politicians and philanthropists who fought to block your appointment. When I read the Twitterverse and other social media spaces cheering your decision to “go where you are valued, not where you are tolerated,” my heart lurched in empathy and, sadly, in understanding. I am a member of a devalued and disrespected faculty at Howard. The Administration’s leadership practices have soiled the bright and beautiful experiences in teaching that push me into my classes daily but have dimmed my formerly boundless, excited joy.
Like all universities in this moment in time, Howard relies significantly upon a faculty of full-time, non-tenure-track professors. We hold the same terminal degrees our tenured and tenure-track colleagues hold. We are well-situated in the most recent research and methods of our disciplines. We publish and research (admittedly, at lower rates). We teach four or five courses per semester. We counsel and advise students. We participate in committee work and university service. We draft letters of recommendation and mentor students towards academic and professional opportunities. And our students love us — because, quite honestly, we are excellent.
Three years ago, the full-time faculty who work in positions not subject to tenure, organized and voted to create a Union that covers a membership roster of less than 150 professors. And in the three years since that ratifying vote passed, Howard University has rivaled the likes of Amazon and Wal-Mart in their efforts to first block and then break the Union of non-tenure-track faculty. The Administration waged a propaganda campaign to undo organizing efforts. And after that failed to interrupt our creation, they side-stepped in-house attorneys to hire external legal counsel with experience thwarting Union organizing and collective bargaining. In three years, Howard has agreed to ZERO of the Union’s requests, offered a “best and final” offer that included ZERO of the Union’s requests, and completely left the bargaining table, leaving little options for the Faculty beyond labor actions the campus will likely see this Fall.
What are some of our issues?
· The end of yearly applications — Each year, Howard professors working as Lecturers must re-apply anew for our jobs. Complete the employment application again, submit the vitae, act like we’ve never met. Every single year, we get a letter during the Spring Semester reminding us that our jobs are over as of May 15th.
· The need for formal reappointments completed by the end of the prior semester — Each year, Howard professors working as Lecturers receive no written offer for employment until the Fall Semester has already begun. Having no proof that we actually have a job, many of us seek employment elsewhere during the Summer and leave. Others have come to rely upon the “security” of seeing our names attached to courses and listed in registration materials circulated to students as confirmation that we will not discover in mid-August that we are newly unemployed.
· The end of the 7-year limit — Each year, Howard professors working as Lecturers are reminded that one cannot maintain employment at Howard beyond 7 years in a non-tenure-track position. Regardless of the strength of your courses, the demonstration of your dedication to the University and your students, or even the strength of your student evaluations, at the end of Year 7, Howard waves goodbye. Department Administrative Assistants have become accustomed to fielding inquires from students seeking grad school recommendations who are looking for Faculty who have been unnecessarily displaced. Under this policy, Howard famously parted ways with former faculty members Toni Morrison and Roberta Flack.
· Substantial salary increases — Each year, Howard professors working as Lecturers earn salaries which are among the lowest among peer and aspirational peer institutions. Lecturers who hold doctorates from the most rigorous programs in the nation earn $48,000/yr at Howard, less than a first-year Kindergarten teacher in Washington DC Public Schools who holds on a bachelor’s degree and just graduated in May 2021. Read that again. Howard values those who usher students toward complicated understandings of theory and method less than the city in which it is located values those who teach children the difference between the colors orange and red. This fact, “hits different,” as our students say, in a city where an average rent near Georgia Avenue begins at $2,500/month and two marquee faculty members are recruited to the University under the largesse of over $20 million in donations.
I teach at Howard by choice. We teach at Howard by choice. But the Howard Administration’s awareness of our love for the University’s ethos and mission has resulted in abuse of the faculty. It doesn’t take 6 months to negotiate a contract with a faculty of this size asking for so little. It certainly doesn’t take 3 years of setting and canceling meetings to stall the work, threatening faculty who refuse to start teaching in a semester without a contract or reappointment agreement, or silencing Department Chairs and/or other faculty who support the collective bargaining efforts of their colleagues.
As you begin your work on The Hilltop, we hope you will stand with us in insisting our Administration reach a fair and equitable contract with our Union of Professors and that they do so quickly to end a three-year long embarrassment. And if it comes to it, as it appears that it will, we hope you will even join us in solidarity as it may be necessary to absent ourselves from the work until fairness and equity become part of the Administration’s agenda.
Quite clearly, we have been tolerated. It’s time that we now are ALL valued. We don’t want to go.
In Truth & Service,
Your Howard University Colleague

Although Prodigal Son was one of many series to shut down production over coronavirus concerns, Monday’s episode actually was the intended finale, due to the order in which episodes were filmed; Episodes 19 and 20, however, could not be completed. Below, series co-creators Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver discuss how the season was impacted by those lost episodes, as well as how that Ainsley twist would play out in Season 2.
TVLINE | This production shutdown put you in an interesting place, given that you were able to film your intended finale but had to scrap Episodes 19 and 20. Did losing those two hours force you to change the episodes that did air? CHRIS FEDAK | Everything was changing very quickly in that last week before production went down. As Sam and I were looking at the situation in New York, we got the very strong impression that we’d be shutting down, and we’d be shutting down for a while. What we did was, we quickly rewrote Episodes 19 and 20 — and those episodes are fantastic, we hope to come back to them at some point — and we turned them into two scenes that became the first two scenes of Episode 21. Essentially, we scrapped those two episodes, and we linked the end of Episode 18 to the beginning of Episode 21. SAM SKLAVER | We were hoping to tell a five-episode story with [Nicholas Endicott]. We would meet him in Episode 18, as we did, and he was a very lovely character, and he was a romantic interest to Jessica. And he would remain a romantic interest for a while, and then we would realize that Nicholas Endicott was a monster. We had a much longer game plan with Dermot, because he’s so fabulous. We wanted to use him as much as possible, and that’s really what we had to cut short.
When we only had a few days left to shoot, we were like, “Oh, shoot, we have to turn Nicholas into a bad guy.” That was [originally] a whole episode, when they realized that. So we had to bring in Anna [Eilinsfeld], who plays Sophie, and have her say, “Nicholas Endicott is a monster.” We were very fortunate, though, in that once we realized all we had to do was turn Nicholas into a bad guy and deal with Eve’s death, somehow it could flow pretty seamlessly from Episode 18 to Episode 21, just with shooting those two scenes. We weren’t able to do everything we wanted, but we were so fortunate in that we got to end the season with the story that we had always wanted to tell since we first sold this show to Fox. It was fortunate for us, and we wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without our post-production team.
TVLINE | Outside of the Nicholas arc, were there other storylines from those two lost episodes that you’d like to fold into Season 2 somehow? FEDAK | Absolutely. We had two very good episodes that allowed us to explore two things that we’d wanted to get into from the beginning of the season: One had to do with exorcism, and the other one had to do with technology. Those were the genres that we were stepping into in those weeks. And the other thing we didn’t get to touch was watching Ainsley do her thing as an investigative reporter. We had some fun stuff that we wanted to do there. SKLAVER | And for the very niche audience who’s a fan, we had a new car for Gil. [Laughs] His LeMans got destroyed by Bright jumping out of a window in Episode 13, and we had a really great thing with Gil finally getting a new car. I know Lou Diamond Phillips was very excited about that, as well. We need to work that story back in, most importantly.
TVLINE | Tell me about the Ainsley twist in this episode. Did the idea of making her a killer come up as you outlined this finale, or had you been building toward this all season? FEDAK | It was something we were intentionally building toward. We always knew this was something we wanted to play with when we started talking about the season, in regards to Ainsley’s psychology as opposed to Bright’s. It’s also a big part of where we’re excited to go next year. SKLAVER | The story that Ainsley always told herself was that she was too young to be affected by her father, but when Chris and I started thinking about these characters, we thought there’s no way she wasn’t affected by her father. She was just dealing with it differently. So we kind of loved the misdirect that all the attention is on Bright, who is older and had a stronger relationship with his father, but of course Ainsley was also affected by it. Trying to find a way to get to that was always the plan, because Halston Sage is such a rockstar, and in exploring this central dynamic of “like father, like son,” we also wanted to see what it would do to his daughter, as well.
TVLINE | I found Martin’s “My girl!” exclamation really interesting. Should we take that to mean Ainsley will be more of the focus in Season 2? FEDAK | Ainsley is still a very big part of the show. We have a lot of fun getting into the psychology of our characters, and she’s as much a mystery now as she was at the beginning of this year. That’s something we’d like to explore, and whenever we’re breaking down our stories, we not only break down the mystery of what people do, but also the mystery of what’s happening inside their minds. It’s definitely going to be a big part of Season 2.
TVLINE | What kind of toll is this going to take on her psyche? It’s not like she seemed to relish killing Nicholas; it was almost like she came out of a fog once it was done. How will we see that manifest? FEDAK | I only want to dip my toe into the story of Season 2, but what you’re seeing in that moment is exactly what we were going for on the page. You’re seeing a very complicated reaction to a very stressful and dynamic situation, and the ramifications of that will be dealt with next year — not only for her, but also for her brother, who’s been dealing with his father for all these years and now has to try and understand his sister and what happened in that moment. But that complexity is our intention. SKLAVER | Luckily, Chris and I have never slit a man’s throat and stabbed him six times like Ainsley does. FEDAK | [Laughs] SKLAVER | But I have to imagine that it does change you. [Laughs] It’s not something you can just tuck away, or if it is something you try to tuck away, as we’ve explored throughout the season, you can’t bury ghosts and trauma. They will always come back to you. So we’re afraid, but we’re not afraid of exploring it.
TVLINE | The Girl in the Box storyline was wrapped up pretty thoroughly in this episode. Looking ahead, do you intend to tell more stories that involve Malcolm investigating his father’s past victims? FEDAK | This is a show about memory, and it’s about what happened in our pasts and how it defines us. In this season, we went back to the Girl in the Box because we were fascinated with who she was and what she meant to Bright, and also with Bright discovering that his father was a killer. There are other parts of Bright’s past that we can’t wait to get into. What was it like being a kid with your father on trial for murder? That was the biggest trial in New York in the 1990s, and that’s a place we want to explore. There are still other revelations for us to get into. SKLAVER | And Martin Whitly killed 23 people that we know of, but there could easily be more. And Martin’s own past is something that we’re very excited to get into. What was Martin’s childhood like? How does someone like Martin get made? The Girl in the Box was a very poignant story to tell because it was a connection that the two of them had, and it was some of Bright’s memories that we could explore. But going back to 1998 and before that, it’s very rich territory.

Part 1: “...ending this...”
Ethan x Casey
Tumblr media
I can’t believe I’m really doing this. This is my first fic ever and I’m excited and also terrified. I needed something to survive the hiatus of open heart and I’ve had this idea in my head for weeks how the story goes on … I apologize for all the mistakes and my bad English. It’s hard to express all those feelings, thoughts and ideas in a foreign language. But I hope that some of you still like this. I’m open for honest opinions and ideas of improvement.
Warning: language, death

------------------------------------------------------
(This takes place a few days after the Mass Kenmore heist.)
Casey emerged from Kyra’s room looking desperate and tired. Kyra’s major surgery should have taken place yesterday, but her condition had unexpectantly deteriorated and they had to cancel everything. Bryce had come up with the idea of performing an extrapleural pneumonectomy and Casey felt sorry for him because he had been so enthusiastic about this. Now there was almost no hope left. She winced when somebody called her name. “Sorry Dr. Valentine, I didn’t mean to scare you. I have Mr. Farrugia’s lab results here for you.”   “Thank you, Danny. No problem, I was lost in thoughts; I didn’t hear you approach.” Without looking at him any further she took the papers from his hands and walked away. Danny watched her go and shook his head in disbelief. Casey was one of his favorite residents and always friendly to everyone, but today she seemed kind of distant and depressed. He had never seen her like this before.
Casey went to Ethan’s office and knocked. “Dr. Ramsey, do you have a minute? I’ve got Senator Farrugia’s lab results.” “Sure, Dr. Valentine, come in. Found anything?” Ethan said without looking up from his papers. “Oh, I haven’t studied it yet.” Now Ethan’s head jerked, astonished, and he saw her still standing in the open door, her face pale and grave. Immediately he got up and went over to her, closing the door behind her. “Casey, what’s wrong?” “It’s Kyra! I don’t think she will make it through the night.” Casey couldn’t hold back her tears. Ethan wrapped his arms around her and held her tightly, her head resting on his chest. She cried quietly. His hands travelled gentle up and down her back as he laid a kiss on her temple. “I’m so sorry, Casey. Is there anything I can do for you?”
There was this nagging feeling again she had all week. There was something he could do. After kissing her outside his apartment and then again at Mass Kenmore he kept avoiding her and she doubted that he would ever bring this up by himself. The whole day had been very emotional, and she was in an awkward mood, so she just thought ‘now or never’. Maybe it would help to catch him in a situation like this. It took her a while to calm down, then she lifted her head to meet his eyes. “You know exactly what I am waiting for, Ethan, talk to me, please!” He instantly loosened his grip a little, averted his eyes and sighed. “Not now and not here, Casey!” “Why not? You’ve been avoiding me ever since the night of the softball game. Why not talk about it right now?” He let go of her completely, turned away and walked over to the window. “You know it’s complicated!” She sighed deeply. “OK, I get it. You don’t have to say anything. I heard your excuses often enough: your rules, your principles, your ethics, my job, my career, the hospital, you’re my boss…I’m sick of it! You can’t do this to me anymore: you seek my company, you want to spend time with me, but as we get closer you push me away.” He turned to look at her and she could see the sadness and pain in his eyes. “Casey, that’s not fair. We agreed…” She interrupted him, her voice getting angrier. “Excuse me, what? I agreed? I never agreed! You went away for two months without even saying goodbye. You have always made all the decisions; you never asked for my opinion. Of course, you didn’t have to because you knew it. I always wanted to be with you, I always wanted to give us a chance. But you always had to be in control of everything.” Ethan seemed helpless and confused by her sudden outburst. This was unusual for her and caught him off guard. “But I did this for you.” It was a weak attempt to calm her down. The effect was exactly the opposite. “Bullshit!” She was almost screaming now, losing her temper. “You didn’t do this for me or my career. I’m not the reason that we are not together. You are the reason. Because you are a coward. Because you are afraid of your feelings. That is something you can’t control. And the great Ethan Ramsey has to have a lock on everything.” She was getting bitchy now and she knew it. But she didn’t care anymore. All the bottled-up agony of the past months came to the surface. Ethan watched her dumbstruck. Just moments ago she was locked in his embrace, feeling at home. Now, standing only a few feet apart, the distance between them seemed huge. Once reality sank in, she knew, what she had to do. It was going to be terribly hurtful for both of them, but it was her turn now to take control. She bit her lip to fight back the tears and it took all her strength to keep her voice calm and steady. “I’m ending this relationship, whatever it was, what we had. I can’t go on like this. Working with you every day and not being able to be with you makes me miserable. I have been patient for months hoping you would finally make up your mind. But I came to realize this will never happen. And that’s why I’m leaving the diagnostics team.”
Ethan seemed paralyzed, couldn’t say a single word. The look of shock and despair on his face brought a heavy pain to Casey’s chest. But she had to finish what she started. “I haven’t decided about my residency yet, but I won’t work with you anymore and I will only talk to you if it’s work related and absolutely necessary.” The lab results, still in hand but now wrinkled, floated to the floor. She turned abruptly, opened the door and was about to leave, when finally, Ethan came back to life. “Casey, wait!” Without looking back she said in a dry voice “No, I’ve waited long enough. I’m done. And it’s Dr. Valentine for you, Dr. Ramsey. After all you’re an attending and I’m a resident.” With that she closed the door behind her and went to find the nearest supply closet.
Later that day she sat next to Kyra’s bed, holding her friend’s hand, her condition getting worse every minute; most of the time she was unresponsive. Casey’s thoughts kept going back to the fatal conversation with Ethan. She couldn’t believe how things had turned out. A mix of emotions went waving through her. The grief for Kyra, the desperation of losing Ethan, anger at herself at messing up so badly. But most of all she was furious with Ethan for putting her through all this. She knew he loved her. He had never said those three words, but he had shown her in so many ways. So why did he always have to put the hospital first, always his duties, never his feelings, his personal happiness, why never her?
She hadn’t heard anyone enter the room, but now she sensed somebody standing behind her. The moment she felt the familiar touch on her shoulder she knew it was him, even before he whispered just one desperate word: “Rookie…” She had always enjoyed being called that old nickname. Though this time it just added up to her rage. Jumping up and pushing his hand away she turned to stare at him aggressively, her words hissed. “I’m no longer your damn rookie. And don’t you dare ever touch me again!” She shoved him out of the way and left the room.
An hour later Kyra was dead, and Casey felt the whole world around her collapse.
(To be continued …)

The General and The Spy
Tumblr media
Pairing: Poe Dameron x Reader
Genre: Adventure / Fluff
Word Count: 2138
Summary: About a year after The Rise of Skywalker, peace in the galaxy is fragile. The Resistance is faced with new diplomatic problems as they try to maintain the peace. Trade routes are especially tricky and has forced Y/N to test her abilities as a negotiator. Due to tirelessly, negotiating with different planets and systems, Y/N has become the new face of peace and hope. Does this make General Poe Dameron jealous?
A/N: Spoilers!!!!
PART 2 PART 3 PART 4 PART 5 Epilogue (Complete)
This was the six, no seventh, meeting of the generals and you were running late. Was it your fault that General Dameron had called a last minute emergency meeting? If this were on the schedule, maybe you would be on time. Still, you hated being late or absent from these meetings. In the months following Rey’s monumental showdown with Emperor Palpatine, a small council had formed which was comprised of the most loyal and top ranking members of The Resistance - including you. Walking briskly through the halls of the small star base turned head quarters, you ran through the list of names of the people that would be present at the meeting.
“The sitting members are Lando Calrissian, Finn, Poe Dameron, Lieutenant Connix-”
“She’s not a Lieutenant anymore, y/n.” Walking by your side was Nix Altross. He was an imposing presence: tall, a few years older than you and an uncanny knack for teasing. But he also had a smile that could be used to charm anyone he met. It was one of the reasons he was such a good diplomat. Almost as good as you.
“Sorry,” you shrug off the mistake, “it’s a habit. Who am I forgetting?” Nix gave a small laugh and sent a good natured elbow your way. He could tell you were nervous. This was the first of the seven meetings where everyone would be present. You had missed the first one, General Dameron missed the second, third and fourth one, (he was on some top secret mission that no one knew anything about) and you missed the fifth and sixth one. You hated that you missed the council meetings, but Nix had spoken on your behalf. You had been on a diplomatic mission to the planets on the outer rim, negotiating a deal with some former bounty hunters which meant that you and General Dameron had never met.
“You mean besides the two of us?” Nix asked. You and Nix were the only two “diplomats” that were considered sitting members of the council. It was not uncommon for strange guests at the meeting. They usually gave advice or input on a situation, but there were only six members who were allowed to vote on matters. Besides you and Nix, the other four members were generals during the war and had the respect of the soldiers in the Resistance. You and Nix, on the other hand, did not have any such titles. The two of you were skilled negotiators and you served the Rebellion by spying on the First Order during the war. The two of you were the best of the best. Well, the best of what was left anyway.
As you and Nix arrived in front of the meeting room, Nix gently grabbed your elbow. You knew he was taller than you, but when he stood so close, it was impossible to not feel like a small child. As if sensing your discomfort, Nix smiled down at you.
“The others love you. Don’t let General Dameron get in your head, okay?” You knew he wouldn’t allow you to enter the room until you agreed. Collecting all your grace and confidence, you nodded at Nix. Besides, you had done your homework on this Poe Dameron. You were an excellent spy and knew how to get under someone’s skin if necessary. Still, you hoped it wouldn’t come to that.
“You decided to come, Altross?” A warm voice greeted you as Nix lead the way into the meeting. You couldn’t help but notice how rigid Nix became as soon as that voice spoke. You could only assume it was Dameron.
“I’ve never missed a meeting, General Dameron. How many have you been to, again?” Nix crossed the room to his seat at the round table. Nix was too much of a smart ass for his own good. You tried to hide your smile as you made your way to your own spot, across from Nix and between Connix and General Calrissian.
“So this is the elusive, silver tongued negotiator. I hear you’re the most dangerous woman in the galaxy,” General Dameron said with a grin. He looked you over as you took your seat. Suddenly, you felt out of place. While he was wearing a pilot’s uniform, you wore a long sleeve, form fitting top and a pair of gloves that hid the scars on your arms. It was neatly tucked into creaseless, grey pants. General Dameron’s tousled hair seemed to fit more naturally with the environment than the simple but sleek updo that you kept your hair in. Despite all this, you found that you couldn’t help but smile at him. There was something, mischievous about this general that caught your attention.
“Poe, meet Y/F/N Y/L/N. I’m surprised the two of you haven’t met before.” Connix made the introduction for you. “Her piloting skills might rival your own,” Connix explained with a sly look at you. You and Connix had been close during your youth. The two of you were often found racing in an attempt to avoid cleaning duty. You always won.
“That’s only a rumor,” you replied, but felt thankful for the support from Connix.
“We’ll race sometime and settle any of these rumors,” General Dameron promised, his eyes never leaving yours. There was something brewing behind his eyes, you just couldn’t tell what.
“Let’s cut to the chase,” General Calrissian interrupted. “We’re here because there needs to be a negotiation on Coruscant. We need to make a plan of action. The meeting is scheduled to begin in three hours from now.” This caught your attention.
“Three hours- wait, I thought we were going to meet tomorrow after we exchanged a transmission negotiation with the last member of the outer rim.” You needed the last bounty hunter in the outer rim to agree to the new trading terms so you could sweeten the deal for the negotiation on Coruscant. The small collection of traders and farmers that you were meeting on Coruscant were hesitant to join the Rebellion and their plan for peace. Historically, it had not gone well for them and had once led to a small war with the outer rim. They would only agree to terms with the Rebellion after things were settled with the outer rim.
“I’m sorry, but the group of farmers sent a transmission this morning,” General Calrissian explained, “they wanted to cancel the meeting altogether, but Altross convinced them to meet today. The ship to Coruscant is being prepared now.” You shot a look at Nix, wondering why he didn’t mention this sooner.
“Okay, so we send Altross to Coruscant and I’ll finish the deal with the last member of the outer rim. We’ll be crunched for time, but-” you were interrupted again, this time by General Dameron.
“Altross is needed in the outer rim,” General Dameron spoke with a grimace, as though he didn’t like the idea, “Y/N, you’re going to negotiate on Coruscant.”
“I’ve heard rumors that the members of the outer rim might pull out of the trade deal,” Nix explained, “There is something happening out there that is making them uneasy. I will go out and investigate while you are on Coruscant. Stall the talks if you can. Give me some time, Y/N. Besides, the negotiation on Coruscant is a much more delicate matter and could use your attention more than mine.” You glare at Nix, hoping he could feel your anger. Why did he blind side you with this information?
“Okay,” You finally say, “I’ll go and I’ll stall, but I need to leave now.” You stand back up, reeling from the unbelievably short meeting. You wouldn’t have time to even pack a bag.
“I will escort you out. I will have some of my guards go with you-” Nix rises to his feet but General Dameron silences him.
“I’m going with you,” The General pushes himself to his feet and looks to you. Was he waiting for permission?
“Poe, why are-” General Finn breaks the brief silence but General Dameron cuts him off too.
“There is something troubling about all this and I don’t want our best spy walking into this alone,” General Dameron explained. You noticed that Nix squared his shoulders at the comment from General Dameron but the general continued, “This meeting was something so quickly thrown together and I just can’t shake a feeling I have.” General Dameron is staring at you. It seemed like he was waiting for someone to disagree. However, you had a bad feeling about this meeting too. There was something twisting in your gut and a small voice in your head that seemed to faintly whisper, don’t go. Perhaps General Dameron’s company would be a good idea.
“Great!” Poe clapped his hands smiled at everyone in the room when no one disagreed. “It’s settled. Y/N and I will take a trip to Coruscant. It’ll be like a little vacation. C’mon, I’ll drive.” General Dameron gestured towards the door and didn’t wait for you to follow.
“We’ll send updates to you as soon as we can,” General Calrissian said as you hurried after General Dameron. You could feel Nix’s eyes on you, but you ignored his glance. All your focus needed to be on this negotiation.
Sitting on a small ship with General Dameron is strange for you. His energy seems infectious, though, and you were eager to experience his piloting. However, as he landed the ship on a landing base in a populated part of Coruscant, you found that you were disappointed by the incredibly smooth ride. Although, you noticed that he turned the two hour trip into an hour and a half.
“You don’t talk much,” General Dameron commented as the two of you hop out of his ship. BB-8 trails along behind you and chirps in agreement. You spent almost the whole trip reviewing case notes about the negotiation you were about to walk in. Nix knew more about these people than you did, but you were determined to give Nix as much time as possible to settle the complications in the outer rim. The most interesting part of the trip happened when Nix sent you a message.
Careful with that one. I don’t trust him.
You only rolled your eyes at the message and replied,
Who am I supposed to trust? You? Why didn’t you tell me about the information you had on the outer rim?
You knew that you were acting out of anger. When Nix replied, you didn’t open the message. Instead, you studied his notes on the situation on Coruscant.
“I’m sorry if my silence makes you uncomfortable, General Dameron,” you answer, “Nix and I learn more from listening than anything else,” you explain with a smile. You could hear the venom in your words, but couldn’t stop yourself from feeling hostile. Out of habit, you aggressively pulled your sleeves a little farther down your arms. This was not how you thought your day would go.
“Hey, Y/N,” General Dameron stopped in front of you, forcing you to also stop walking. “I don’t know what is happening right now, but there are a lot of things riding on this negotiation. You and I both want peace, at least I hope you do-”
“Of course I want-”
“Right now, you and I are the only friends we have, okay? I trust you. I need you to trust me or this isn’t going to work.” General Dameron dropped his happy-go-lucky demeanor and seemed like the battle worn man you suspected him to be. His voice was hard like stone but he seemed… genuine. That was something you missed about people these days. It was a quality that you believed to be wiped out in the galaxy. Entranced by his honesty, you nod.
“Good,” General Dameron let out with a sigh. His voice had returned to the warm and welcoming tone that you enjoyed. He still seemed genuine, despite the mood shift, but this was a different side of the General.
“I want you to call me Poe,” he said as warmth crept back into his features.
“We’re going to be late for our meeting, Poe,” you reply gently. You step around General Dameron before he could reply. It doesn’t take long for him to catch up to you, though. When he does, he linked his arm through yours and smiled at you. With a questioning glance, you rested your gloved hand against his arm.
“I’ve never been to Coruscant,” General Dameron explained as he moved a small collection of dark curls out of his eyes, “but I’m glad I can say I have the most dangerous woman in the galaxy by my side.” Before you could stop yourself, you let out a bright laugh.
PART 2
A/N: THANK YOU for reading through this! I guess this could be read as a one shot? I think I would like to make it a series in which case it would have 5 chapters. Please let me know what you guys think!!

Tumblr media
So @ao3commentoftheday suggested people make rec lists during these trying times and I decided to go ahead and jump on the band wagon. Here is a list of 13 Johnlock fics, sorted from shortest to longest. There’s H/C, PWP, Case Fics, PRETEND RELATIONSHIPS, and some pretty dank AU’s.
Okay then, onto the tropes!
(fics listed below)
Caught by Salambo06 (AO3) ( @salambo06fics)
Author’s Summary: A hotel room. They’re here for a case, hadn’t planned to spend the night and ended up sharing a room. No, sharing a bed. Suddenly John is very much aware of his own hand closed around his hard cock and the ragged breathing next to him. Closing his eyes for the briefest second, John dares to turn his head just enough to confirm what he already knows.
Sherlock, on his side, watching him.
Rating: Explicit
Word Count: 1,859

Coldness/Heat by agirlsname (AO3) ( @agrlsname)
Author’s Summary: The inn is booked up on New Year's Eve. The train home is cancelled because of the snow. The only option is to sleep in the non-heated guest room of a client, and John and Sherlock are freezing.

THERE IS ONLY ONE BED! AND THEY ARE SO COLD! WHATEVER ARE OUR BOYS TO DO?!?!?! Turn it up to 11 in this amazing PWP, that’s what.
---- Stranded by BeautifulFiction (AO3) ( @the-pen-pot )
Author’s Summary: ‘Do you think we’re less than that – best friends? Or more?’
John’s head pulled back, and the look he received suggested John was seriously wondering how someone so intelligent could be so stupid. ‘Well, definitely not less.’
When stranded on a derelict barge at high tide, John and Sherlock reconsider their friendship.
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 5,798
Tags/Warnings: case fic, cuddling for warmth, first kiss
I really liked this fic. It really drew me in with it’s imagery, I could see the scenes as easily as I could see John and Sherlock getting together in this way.

This fic is a wonderful H/C that features a sick Sherlock who can be exceptionally fragile at times, and a caring Watson. Makes me wish I’d had a John around when I had kidney stones :’(
---- Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder by cypress_tree (AO3) ( @cypress-tree)
Author’s Summary: John helps Sherlock with an experiment: for an entire month, they are not allowed to touch each other and must remain at least one metre apart at all times. Meanwhile, I conduct my own experiment: how much UST can I shove into a single fic?

"You want to pretend to be a couple so we can chaperone a trip to Disney World with Rosie's class and you won't have to share a room with a stranger?"
"Exactly." Sherlock beamed at him. "Don't worry about the cost. The Birmingham case last month paid more than enough to cover expenses for all three of us."

Word Count: 34,115
Tags/Warnings: Fake/Pretend Relationship, Sharing a Room, Sharing a Bed. Disney World, Parentlock, Friends to Lovers, Fluff, First Kiss
I’ll just use what I wrote when I bookmarked this lovely fic: I’ve never been more compelled by Disney related things than when I was reading this fic. I’ll never go to Disney World, but I’ll sure as hell read this fic again omg was it good
----
The Darkness Within, So Close by shiplocks_of_love (AO3) ( @shiplocks-of-love ) ((I hope @ing you twice doesn’t cause any issues! Sorry in advance. Tumblr confuses me))
Author’s Summary: Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller deal with a new string of murders in Broadchurch. Help comes from an unlikely place as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson travel to West Dorset. Tags/Warnings: casefic, Sherlock x Broadchurch crossover fic, Underage Death, Murder, MAJOR spoilers for Broadchurch S1 and S2 and for Sherlock S3, post S3 Sherlock, post S2 Broadchurch, you are MOST welcome to put johnlock glasses on but this is pre-slash okay?, Light Angst, Implied/Referenced Drug Use, Implied/Referenced Domestic Violence
I haven’t actually finished this fic yet, but the characterizations for the characters of both universes are spot on. When Alec Hardy started shouting at the beginning, David Tennant appeared in my room and started reading the fic aloud to me. True story. Also this fic is part of a series, so, like, that’s amazing.
----
The Norwood Love Builders by flawedamythyst (AO3) ( Tumblr: https://flawedamythyst.tumblr.com/) ((couldn’t @  you for some reason. Prob, again, because Tumblr makes my brain hurt))
Author’s Summary: Sherlock and John go undercover to solve the murder of Joanna Oldacre, but things are complicated by the many feelings John has been repressing in the wake of Sherlock's faked death and return.

Tags/Warnings: case fic, fake/pretend relationship, couples retreat, bed sharing, therapy (for a case...that’s a weird tag but I read this in fic so often so), pining John, UST, First Kiss, getting together
Amazing fic by an amazing writer. I have a weakness for ‘pretend relationship for a case’, especially when it’s filled with pining and ust. So in other words this fic is perfect.
----
Bridging the Ravine by SilentAuror (AO3) ( @silentauroriamthereal)
Author’s Summary: Sherlock and John go undercover at Ravine Valley, a therapy centre for same-sex male couples in an investigation into a possible human trafficking ring. Pretend relationship for a case, and it’s a really good case too! Plus it’s at a couples therapy retreat, I mean, come on!! And the OC’s, don’t even get me started on them, because I won’t be able to stop singing their praises. This fic was sent by the gods through the blood sweat and tears of the extremely talented SilentAuror. You should honestly just go and binge all of their stuff. What else are you gonna do during quarantine? OH! And guess what??? THERE’S A SEQUEL!

The X-files/Sherlock crossover I always needed in my life. I think at least a few other Johnlockers out there (ha! Fic title) have watched X-files and thought ‘holy cow this is so John and Sherlock, I need the AU or else I’ll die’. Well look no further! No need to die! Read and watch as all your X-files/Sherlock wishes come true :D

BBRae- Shaking Off the Dust
This was originally a piece for the BBRae Zine, but that got cancelled. Regardless, I was proud that I got another piece done for these two and still want to bring it into the world. Enjoy!
~
Despite being part demon, a creature associated with darkness, Raven had a standard sleep schedule. The headaches induced from staying up too late tended to aggravate her powers and often required a longer meditation session to alleviate. On this particular night, however, the trilogy Raven was close to finishing was simply too much of a cliffhanger to leave until morning. Her extended reading session paid off, as the book ended on a surprisingly non-cliché and satisfactory note and she was only suffering from mild thirst.
Nothing a little tea can’t cure, Raven thought as she stood up, stretching her tense legs.
Leaving the quiet of her room, she noticed a dim light down the hall. Shuffling past Beast Boy’s room, she blinked wearily at the light that peeked out from under his door. Only unintelligible mumbling sounded from inside. Raven shrugged, figuring he was up late playing a tough level of Mega Monkey: Apes Rising on his GameDude console again. He hadn’t done that in some time, but old habits die hard.
With that, Raven continued on her way. Having made it to the kitchen and satisfied her parched throat with warm herbal tea, she came back past Beast Boy’s room. This time, she heard a yelp, followed by the crashing of Beast Boy and what sounded like a stack of comic books hitting the floor.
Raven sighed. She couldn’t let that go uninvestigated. At the very least, she felt she had to know if Beast Boy had managed to break a toe tripping over his massive collection of nerdy treasures again.
Opening the door, she spied Beast Boy rubbing his face. Around him were his possessions, pulled from his closet and tossed around the room in what, to her eyes, was a haphazard mess. The garbage can in the corner was stuffed well past the brim with dolls—action figures, as he insisted—that Raven was certain he had had since the Tower was first built. Beast Boy caught sight of her. Surprised, then sheepish, he attempted to stand amidst the scattered pile surrounding him.
“Care to explain what you’re up to on this once peaceful night?” she inquired as he morphed into a hummingbird, flitted over the pile, and returned to his human form right in front of her.
“I’m, uh, cleaning up a bit,” he said, clearing his throat.
“If by ‘cleaning’ you mean ‘purging your room of all of your cherished comics and collectibles’.”
“If you’d like to help, then it would get done quicker. Heck, you could pick it all up with your powers.” He gestured towards the remaining work. Raven didn’t take the bait.
“I’d rather not be partially responsible for the post-cleaning regret you could have.” She took a pointed look at his belongings, as if to emphasize just how much he was suggesting tossing out.
“Aw come on, Raven.” He picked up a random comic by his feet and waved it. “Do you really think I’ll miss Goo Goblins #37? I think I’ve moved on past that one.”
Raven shrugged in slight agreement. The admittedly campy-looking comic was certainly goofy enough to make a seventeen-year-old question if he was engaging in appropriate level material. Still, Beast Boy was always one to cling to childish endeavors.
“If you insist,” is all she could comment. If he was truly ready for such an adjustment, she wouldn’t be the one to stop him.
Grinning satisfactorily, Beast Boy took to scooping up his disheveled comics and setting them in lumps just outside his room. Raven stepped further into his room to allow him through the open door.
“I’ll just set these out here for now. Then I can get them into boxes and maybe even pass them out to some kids at their schools. I know a few Dirty Dan fans who would kill for some of these issues,” Beast Boy thought out loud, already beaming at the thought of making a kid’s day.
“Just as long as their parents don’t object,” Raven snarked, hoping that Dirty Dan wasn’t about a kid who refused to take a bath. The last thing Robin would want was a surge of complaints from parents claiming they were bad influences on the youth.
Watching Beast Boy’s slow progress, Raven’s curiosity got the better of her and she leaned down to investigate what kind of reading Beast Boy had invested himself in for all of these years. There were plenty of brightly colored covers of fictional superhero groups. Why these were written when literal superheroes saved the world was beyond her. Beneath that was a handful of light horror, with cartoonish monsters chasing hapless teenage victims. Perfect for a demographic who hadn’t witnessed literal demons in their lifetime. Next was . . .
Raising it up for a closer look, it dawned on her just what she was holding.
“Wait, is this-?”
“Crud! My bad!” Beast Boy rushed over to carefully take the book from her hands. “This must have been mixed with my Deranged Daredevils collection. I wasn’t going to throw this one out, promise.”
Beast Boy reached over her to place the book on the singular chair in the room. So far, the supposed ‘safe’ pile consisted of childhood classics, Insect Care for Dummies, 1001 Drop Dead Puns, and a few wildlife encyclopedias. The newest addition was gifted to Beast Boy by Raven for his first birthday after the team had formed. Back then, she hardly knew him, but didn’t want to deny him the joy of receiving a gift from someone he always reached out to. So, she decided on something that could either come across as a gag gift or a genuine appeal to his interests, despite her complete uncertainty on whether or not he would appreciate it.
When he ripped open the packaging and read the title, The Essential Calvin and Hobbes, he lit up.
“Oh, cool! I’ve read some of these before! I don’t know half the words that come out of the kid’s mouth, but the tiger is pretty cool! Thanks, Raven.” He gave her a classic toothy smile and Raven was admittedly relieved that he didn’t reject the gift or feel any disappointment.
That was years ago, though. Was he still so attached to that particular book? Raven had given him far more personal gifts since getting to know him on a more familiar level.
“Why is that one an exception?” she posed the question as he squatted next to the pile she was looking through.
“Hmm?” Beast Boy looked back for clarification, and a light bulb went off.
“Oh! That’s easy. Because you gave it to me. You probably knew I wouldn’t get half the jokes, but you took a chance anyway. Maybe I’d get it eventually, you know?” His voice trailed off at that last statement.
There it was. Something truly was nagging at him, then. That something had pushed him to embark on a spontaneous cleaning spree to either distract or remedy. While Beast Boy was, oddly enough, the toughest one on the team for her to read empathetically, he was normally easy to understand by his actions alone. However, she had noticed a pattern with him over the years. He was the best at wearing a mask. Robin attempted to remain stoic, but one could still tell what he was feeling. Beast Boy, on the other hand, played pretend. Concealing aggravation and hurt with a stream of jokes was his fallback. This left him with buried sadness, which was never good for the long-term psyche.
Considering how to approach the situation, Raven supposed prodding him a bit would perhaps bring more clarity as to the cause of his distress.
“Hmm. I figured your vocabulary would expand.”
“When, though?” Beast Boy let slip out. He asked so sullenly, the way that a child would when they were seeking approval. Raven recognized this tone from her time spent with Melvin as she began her early teen years. The girl wanted more independence, but a part of her still sought to know that Raven was proud of her in everything that she did.
Upon realizing his slip-up, Beast Boy’s eyes darted around the room. He nabbed a toy from the pile before him and held it up.
“Does this one bring back memories or what?” he chuckled, beaming a large smile. It was the singing monkey with the cymbals that sounded while Raven’s manifested fear chased the Titans throughout the Tower.
Raven sighed softly. That was a poor diversion and he knew it.
“Beast Boy, why are you doing this?” she queried, gesturing around the room. “This ‘spring cleaning’ is too out of character to come out of nowhere.”
“Can’t a guy want a little more walking room?”
“Not when it involves pretending that nothing’s wrong.”
Raven’s eyes met his. He held contact for mere moments before the façade cracked.
Beast Boy’s false smile slowly dropped. He knew he shouldn’t be hiding from her. Raven was one of his best friends, after all.
“’s not a big deal,” he mumbled, looking away.
“It is if it’s bothering you,” she responded, gently touching his shoulder to get his attention. Beast Boy turned back to her, setting the monkey down.
How would he start?
“It’s kind of complicated.”
Raven had the time for him.
“Then start from the beginning.”
With that, Beast Boy sat back, leaning his cheek on a propped-up knee. Raven lowered herself into a crisscross, fully facing him. He took a few moments to collect his thoughts, memories reflecting clearly in his eyes.
“Back, ah, with the Doom Patrol, I was just a kid when Mento started training me. He saw that my powers could be controlled and used for the greater good. And I wanted to be a hero! I wanted to help others. But I wasn’t used to getting shot at or transforming so much I passed out. It was rough for a while. And I messed up. A lot.
“Mento never let me forget any of the mistakes I made, even long after I learned from them. Sometimes, it took longer than it should have to learn, but I eventually got it. But that wasn’t good enough for him. It was for Rita, but Mento was the one in charge, so there was never an end to it.”
Beast Boy exhaled, stopping for a moment to likely push away memories that were crawling out of unpleasant depths of his subconscious.
“And that’s part of why you left?” Raven prompted.
“That was a big part of it. Just one day decided that I had enough, and I thought I could grow stronger if I became the sidekick of someone who could actually help me build on when I did something right. And when I met you guys, things were finally different, and everyone could rely on me in a fight. That felt good and I thought that maybe I wasn’t a total screw up after all. But today, with the mission I just- I messed up really bad and I knew what I did wrong right as it was happening.”
Oh.
Raven and Starfire had split off from the boys to tend to another emergency and didn’t hear back from them until after their mission was complete. Robin had seemed somewhat frazzled, but otherwise they had been successful as well. She hadn’t heard about any particular difficulties on their end.
Beast Boy continued on, his frustrations spilling out at this point.
“I mean, Robin and Cyborg were able to fix it, but Mumbo almost got away. We had him, but I slipped up and he did a lot more damage before we nabbed him again. That’s the kind of dumb mistake I made when I was just a kid, except back then, people died.” He nearly choked on his last words.
Raven’s thoughtful expression instantly morphed into a mixture between solemnity and shock. She had no idea he carried such a weight.
“Beast Boy . . .”
He let out a humorless laugh, his eyes unfocused and unwilling to meet hers.
“Do you ever just . . . get frustrated that you haven’t changed at all? Sometimes I still feel like the kid that can’t follow an order without screwing something up. I’m trying to get better at my job, but that’s not enough when lives are in danger,” he agonized, reaching up to grip his hair in his fist.
His emotions were beginning to overwhelm him. Beast Boy was so used to holding these demons in that he didn’t know how to handle them when they reared their ugly heads. And he hated himself for dumping his worries on Raven. She didn’t need to be dragged into his problems; he should be able to handle them on his own by now.
However, one fact that Beast Boy forgot was that Raven was a healer. She knew that part of the healing process included recognizing the hurt so one could fully recover.
“Beast Boy, you’re right to feel frustrated over this.” Raven began gently, so as to properly acknowledge his despair. “But you have grown up through the years that I’ve known you.”
“Today might prove you wrong,” he sighed defeatedly.
“One bad day doesn’t always indicate a pattern. Failing to react well under pressure happens to even the most disciplined of people.”
“Does it happen to you?”
Raven blinked. Where did that come from?
“What do you mean?”
“You’re always so in control and know what to do. I just don’t know if I can ever be as level-headed as you are.” Truthfully, though he complained about her supposed standoffishness when they first met, Beast Boy always admired her ability to remain calm. She could be cranky at times, but Raven was the Titan to turn to when you needed sage-like wisdom and a calming presence.
“. . . Not always.”
Beast Boy paused. He met her earnest and somewhat hesitant eyes. Where did that come from?
Raven pressed her lips tightly together, then, ever so slowly, began to speak.
“Sometimes . . . I think that I’m still as much of an isolated shut-in as when the team formed. You guys understand my snark, but I still go too far at times and I can tell the others don’t want to tell me that I hurt their feelings. We all struggle with insecurity, Beast Boy, no matter how well we hide it.”
Beast Boy leaned toward her, resting a hand in the space between them.
“You’ve grown so much though, Raven. I’ve noticed how much more you smile nowadays, and you actually talk to us about what you’re thinking about. I don’t think you would have been caught dead in my room like this when we first met,” he cracked a small smile, realizing just how intimate their situation was.
Raven relaxed, quietly grateful that the Beast Boy she knew was reemerging.
“No, I wouldn’t have.”
Now it was her turn.
“But the same goes for you. You take initiative when it’s called for and frankly, some of your strategies are the reason we make it through rougher battles.”
“Name one time,” Beast Boy held up a finger, still not entirely convinced.
“The initial charge against the Brotherhood. Morphing into a jellyfish to filter Scarecrow’s fear gas. Disabling that bomb as a cockroach so you wouldn’t be detected or incinerated,” Raven listed off confidently.
Beast Boy looked down, pondering her words. His shoulders relaxed and a soft smile slowly crept up onto his cheeks.
“Huh. I guess that was pretty mature of me,” he chuckled.
“You know,” she started, peering her head down to catch his eyes once more. “If you’re so worried about making mistakes, maybe talk to Robin about changing your training routine. Having variety might help your ability to react appropriately to any situation.”
“Yeah. That’d probably be a good place to start.”
“Also,” she began, gesturing to the mess around them. “Growing up doesn’t mean getting rid of your childhood joys. It just means you step up without being asked to.”
“I suppose you’re right. But I’ve been meaning to clean up for a while. Kind of hard to stay focused with so much clutter in your room.”
“Maybe leave it until you get a good night’s sleep,” she suggested.
“Eventually, but first there’s something I want to try.”
“And that would be . . .?”
Beast Boy reached back and grabbed the treasure that had sparked their night of revelations.
“Giving this book a try.” He waved the Calvin and Hobbes compilation before her. “You’ve granted me so much wisdom just now, I must have aged a few decades mentally. That is, if you’re not too tired.”
His hopeful expression was too much to pass up, especially at a time when he had opened up so much to her. It was out of character, but Raven was willing to give it a shot.
“I think I’m up for a little humor.”
Beast Boy mock grabbed his heart.
“Such an anomaly only comes once every other blood moon, so I’ll have to cherish you discovering your sense of humor.”
“The anomaly will pass faster the longer you talk about it.”
“Got it.”
They sat on the floor together, each holding one end of the book. Page by page, Beast Boy laughed outwardly at Calvin’s incessantly precocious dialogue. His eyes lit up as he brushed Raven’s shoulder, giddy to share the joke with her. Raven, in return, chuckled at Hobbes’ playful antics and allowed Beast Boy to see her rare carefree expressions.
What happened next truly made their night. The punchline was perfectly worded and timed for the both of them and they shared a singular moment of genuine laughter. Raven’s only a brief chortle and Beast Boy’s a lengthier guffaw, but the laughter of two friends nonetheless.
Raven could have denied the moment and blamed her increasingly delirious state. But she wasn’t about to deny Beast Boy the rare opportunity to have made her laugh. After all, sharing this moment with him was the best feeling she had all day.

I expect no one to read this at all. It’s more of a way to get some feelings off of my chest. This is a look into my personal life and what I went through in 2020. I cried quite a bit while writing this, haha.
My farewell letter to 2020:
To you 2020, the year that shook the world. You’re certainly one to go down in the record books. You changed my life as you did to everyone. To you, the month of March. I had hit the lowest part in my life since the shock of my parent's divorce 11 years ago. My beloved cat had died in October of 2019, a few days short of our one year anniversary of fostering him, which soon turned into us adopting him. It was sudden and unexpected. I still can remember clear as day that horrid call I got from my sister from the vet. “Hey, we need you to come up here. It’s kidney failure.” As she spoke through her tears, I instantly began to cry. I had felt sad for months after that.
In December of 2019, the adoptive dad of one of my closest friends committed suicide. She was torn apart, having had three people she knew died earlier that year. I stood by her side and watched her cry. We colored together in the counseling room, making small talk and doing anything I could to comfort her.
From late February into March, another one of my closest friends revealed to me a traumatic experience she went through. She had been raped by a classmate of mine, one who I considered to be good acquaintances. She was a grade younger than me, and was practically completely dependent on me and my friend, as she was too scared to tell her parents. She eventually completely relied on my friend as I became shoved out of the problem. Her story and the amount of support required from her, which she never gave back to me throughout our friendship, made me realize at that moment I had hit rock bottom. I was tired and so sick of it all. This sentence that I'm about to say is one I've never admitted to anyone: I didn't want to be around anymore, or at least alive. I needed somewhere to escape. I didn't want to commit suicide due to expectations I held upon myself. I was also too scared to commit suicide.
I finally admitted I needed help, which was scary for me to do. In March of you, 2020, I was diagnosed with situational depression. I was soon put on an anti-depressant. It felt good to put a name on it, but little did I know I would pay the price for my relief. Preparing to go off to college, I needed to get a First Class Medical Certificate in order to apply to the flight program at the colloege I wanted to go to. I went and got my FAA Medical Certificate done, ticking off the boxes on my journey to fulfill my life long dream of becoming a pilot.
Spring Break came and after watching schools around me close, it was announced that we wouldn't be returning until mid April, and then the end of April, then until May. I quickly realized it wasn't possible to return and that unbeknownst to me I had already spent the last days of my Senior year at school in March. A frantic question was suddenly formed amongst my classmates and soon the world: Will the class of 2020 graduate? I, being burnt out, didn't care what would happen to me or my class. We soon became a laughing stock and a sight to pity around the world. Class of 2020, Corona Class, The Class that would be telling this story to their kids. It didn't matter to me. As I held up the “Class of 2020″ shirt my uncle got me with the zeros as tp rolls, I sighed. I just wanted to graduate without getting laughed at. Spoiler Alert: That didn't happen.
Around this time I ended my friendship with the girl who I cherished but didn't cherish me back. I still to this day can’t exactly understand why I did that. I blocked her and left without saying goodbye. That wasn’t the right thing to do at all. She had been raped and needed support, but here I was leaving her. She always needed and wanted my support but never gave it back. It was always “Aw you have a problem? Here, let’s try this minimal effort plan to help you. That didn’t work? Oh well, let’s get back to me.” This is no excuse at all for my actions of cutting her off. I really still don’t know why I did this. I had hung out with her everyday in the summer of 2019. Here I was, easily letting her go. Jackie, I’m so sorry. I hope you are doing well and get into ISU to follow your dreams of being an engineer.
In May I received news that still hurts and effects me to this day. I had been denied my Medical Certificate. It wasn't due to me being on an antidepressant, is was due to the fact that I was depressed. This was soul crushing news, but there was still a chance I could reapply for the Medical Certificate if I jumped through multiple hoops. May also provided the announcement that my safe haven in Oshkosh, Wisconsin wouldn't be happening this year. It was definitely understandable due to the virus, but still very saddening to me. It’s really the only thing I look forward to each year, but I understood and agreed on why it was canceled for 2020.
In June I got the news that a beloved teacher of my family and I passed away due to a heart attack and complications of Addison’s Disease. She was the best math teacher I had ever had, and the best in my High School. Math is my worst subject, but she never made me feel stupid like the other math teachers. She always made sure I understood what I was doing. Sometimes when she didn’t feel like having class she would have a free day. She would gossip with my classmates and tell us stories of her youth. Sometimes though she would give us free days due to having intense migraines that sometimes hospitalized her due to her disease. It wasn’t fun to see her like that.
In June she was hospitalized where even her husband and two kids weren’t allowed in to see her. The only person allowed into her before she died was her twin brother. The family decided to have a public funeral, with tons of people in the community and school district socially distancing and wearing masks to pay their respect. I began to cry as I listened to her husband tell everyone that he wasn't ready and was so scared to be a single parent. Their children were both under ten, and were now motherless. Mrs. Johnson it was so hard saying goodbye to you. I loved you so much, and I still do. You gave my friend who had lost her dad food and comfort. You did so much not only for my family and I, but for everyone in the community and school district. I miss you so much.
Hot days came with hazy skies. Everyday I checked the wildfire smoke map as I watched the sun turn bright pink as the sun became a blazing red when the sun went down. For weeks our sky looked hazy. Some days looked cloudy, but it was actually smoke. As someone who lives the Midwest, this was quite surprising.
In August I experienced something that will forever be remembered by me and everyone who lives in my state. A Derecho tore through and ravaged my hometown and the state that I dearly love. We watched through the window as trees snapped in half and branches and leaves whirled around everywhere. We watched through the window as water roared down the road, appearing as if a stream had started right next to us. We watched in fear as shingles were torn off and large items were blown through our yard. As the electricity flickered out, we wondered if we would be crushed by either tree that were on two sides of our house. Wet leaves were torn apart and slammed into our window, where they stayed there for a month afterwards. They looked like confetti, torn into thousands of tiny pieces.
To the branches and trees I still see today in the neighboring towns and cities, broken reminders of the damage done. To you, the metal grain bins that still sit out in the flattened cornfields. Our once tall and proud cornfields that are a proud symbol of my state were now flattened to the ground, completely parallel to the rich farming soil that it stood in. Painting the countryside in flat waves of green with splotches of silver from grain bins and white from barns and houses damaged. Our proud stalks became damaged goods that costed us billions. To the buildings that still show their battle scars from months ago, the houses with the tarps on their roofs and the old wooden barns that couldn't handle the 140 mph. To you, Donald J, Trump, the President of the United States who was supposed to tour Cedar Rapids to exam the damage that still lies there today. You stayed in the airport and immediately left after getting your business done. You didn't care about us, you were there to do business and leave to start your campaigning.
My small town was able to clean up within a month or so, but even still TODAY the bigger cities are littered with damage. There are tree trunks and branches scattered along roads. Thousands of houses still have tarps on their houses and siding missing.
In August my grandma was also diagnosed with Dementia. I've watched her deteriorate over the past few months. Every time we call she forgets that I’m not in school. Sometimes she forgets my name. When we tell her we’re on our way to visit outside her window, she forgets within 10 minutes. Grandma, I hope you never forget that I love you.
In September I finally met with a therapist. I am so thankful to be working with her. After months of my family getting angry and upset at me for being scared to go to the store, my therapist diagnosed me with Social Anxiety. I was so relieved to be diagnosed with it and to be working out the issues I have with my therapist. We work together weekly to help me become a better and more comfortable version of myself.
Over the summer months the health of my already diseased cat took a steep decline. She was my cat, and I felt powerless as I slowly watched her die. She could no longer stay inside due to her having constant accidents. As we made our plan to take her to the vet to give her a peaceful death, I received a heartbreaking call from my mother on a cold September night. My little Jill had passed away in her sleep on our porch. I came over to say goodbye to my baby as I pet her cold fur one last time. I love you my little Jilly Bean and I miss you everyday. I miss and love you so so so much.
September also brought the news that a precious B-25 had a crash landing. It always hurts to hear about a Warbird crashing or getting damaged. I was happy to hear though that they were going to fix it back to airworthiness.
In October I had to make a difficult decision with the FAA. Do I try to visit four different doctors for phycological examinations in order to complete my Medical Certificate or do I wait to get off my medicine and start feeling better on my own? I opted for the second part due to the decline of visiting all of those doctors coming up in November. We had been given that option early in the year, but Covid prevented us from traveling out of state to see those doctors. I sent a letter to the FAA to let them know what I was doing. I received a letter about a month ago that stated that I still needed to visit those doctors or something like that. I honestly didn’t look through it that well because it’s just such a pain in the butt.
Another thing about you 2020 is that you provided me with he opportunity to meet amazing people. I began to watch The Umbrella Academy in September, but I decided to make my account on October 1st. I’ve met tons of funny and talented people on here. The show itself had provided me tons of comfort. It has given me the courage to start writing fanfiction for it along with starting back up on drawing fanart
The end of 2020 has slowed down for me. One of my aviation heroes died this year, Mr. Chuck Yeager. It was heartbreaking for me to hear that. One of the worst days for me was ironically on my birthday in December. I felt really bitter and down and just wanted to sit in my room, but I didn’t. I don’t like celebrating my birthday anymore. As I get older it feels less and less special and in turn I feel sad about it. Another reason why is that I don’t like having a fuss made about it. I don’t like the attention from it haha. It’s okay though because even though this year I felt upset I eventually felt a bit happier as it turned to night.
This year I witnessed history being made. Let me be clear that history is made every year, but this year was very eventful. I witnessed innocent black lives being slaughtered by the very people who are sworn to protect everyone. It’s so disappointing and soul crushing to see all of this. I don’t know if I’ve made it clear on here, but I strongly stand with the BLM movement. I may not understand what they haven been going through for decades, but I stand with them to make things right. Black Lives Matter, not All Lives. All Lives only matter when it’s actually true and Black Lives are included. If you saw a house on fire in an entire block of houses, you wouldn’t say “All Houses Matter!” No they don’t, that house on fire matters. Black Lives Fucking Matter, and All Cops Are Bastards.
To you, the Pledge of Allegiance. Everyday in elementary school I proudly held my right hand over my heart as I stared up at Old Glory and recited you. This year helped me realize that “With liberty and justice for all.” is total bullshit. The only thing I truly appreciate about my country now is the scenery and nature it provides.
To you 2020, as I finish writing this letter on December 31st. You’ve made me cry a lot, including right now. You’ve deeply effected my life and brought me lots of sorrow. Despite all of this, I don't feel upset about you. Yes, you gave me some events that will always haunt me but that’s okay. 2020 even though you’ve hurt me, you’ve also shaped me. Yes, you also made my lose faith in my country and humanity, but I can only hope for the best. You’ve pushed me to become a better version of myself.
So to you 2020, you’ve been a hell of a year. I’ve hated and loved you, but mostly hated you. I went through some shit, but others have gone through worse this year. To those of you who have had a very hard time this year, I love you. I sincerely hope things get better for you. Friend or stranger, you can always rely on me as someone to talk to, to rant or vent to, and to cry to. This year was excruciating, but don’t give up. It has ended and a new year has begun. Sure 2021 may also be bad and we’re all exhausted from 2020, but let’s fight till the end.
