In 2015 I already made a blog about Abbott Motor Car Company in Detroit
Abbott-Detroit 1911
The Abbott-Detroit was an American luxury automobile manufactured between 1909 and 1919. It was considered powerful and well-designed, and had a Continental engine. Production of the auto began in Detroit, Michiganand was moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1916 at which time the automobile name was shortened to Abbott. The cars were guaranteed for life by 1913, when electric lighting and starting had been standardized.
History
black and white photograph of the Abbott Motor Company showing a truck and three automobiles next to the building
The Abbott Motor Car Company was established in 1909 in Detroit located at 107 Waterloo Street. The Abbott-Detroit offered a choice of either 4-cylinder or 6-cylinder Continental engine. The car could also be purchased with an 8-cylinder Herschell-Spillman engine.
In 1911, Abbott-Detroit models included a Model B 5-passenger Touring Car priced at US$1500.00, a Roadster US$1500.00, four-door Dimi-Tonneau with detachable tonneau US$1650, Coupe US$2350. The company motto that year was “The Up-To-The-Minute Car.”
The next year, the company offerings included the 1912 Model-44, a 7-passenger 4-door Touring Car that was sold for US$1,800. Additionally, a 4-door Demi-Tonneau for US$1,775, a 4-door Limousine fully equipped for US$3,000. The company also built a less expensive line known as the Model 34′ which included a 4-door Touring Car that came without a top and windshield which sold for US$1,350, a 4-door Roadster, also without a top and windshield, for US$1,275 and a Colonial Coupe fully equipped for US$2,150.
Consolidated car company
By 1916, the company changed its name to Consolidated Car Company and production of these cars had reached 15 to 20 units a day.
That same year, the company moved from Detroit to a larger facility in Cleveland and changed their name to the Abbott Motor Corporation. The automobiles built in Cleveland were called Abbott. The move proved too stressful on the company’s finances, and they declared bankruptcy in April 1918.
Models
Models that Abbott-Detroit offered included:
34/45 hp (25/30 kW) Foredoor Roadster
Limousine (1913 model)
44/40 hp (33/37 kW) Battleship Roadster
34 hp (25 kW) Model F
31 hp (24 kW) Model L

Abadal
The Imperia-Abadal model was manufactured by Imperia under Abadal license
Abadal Vehicles
The Abadal was a Spanish car manufactured between 1912 and 1923, named after Francisco Abadal. Considered a fast luxury car, it was closely patterned on the Hispano-Suiza and offered in two models. One had a 3104 cc four-cylinder engine while the other had a 4521 cc six-cylinder engine.
Soon after the inception of the Abadal line, the Belgian company Impéria began building Abadals under license as Impéria-Abadals. In 1916 Abadal acquired the Buick agency, and Barcelona-built Abadals after that year had Buick power units and featured custom coachwork. These cars were called “Abadal-Buicks”. M. A. Van Roggen (formerly of Springuel) took over the Belgian operation soon after, and built around 170 more Impéria-Abadals. Among the models produced were a 2992cc 16-valve four-cylinder OHC sports model and three prototype 5630 cc straight-eights. The company ceased automobile production in 1923.
Francisco Abadal (nicknamed Paco) was a Hispano-Suiza salesman and racing driver in Barcelona. He began this enterprise in 1912, and upon its cessation became an agent of General Motors in Spain. General Motors’ plans in 1930 related to a prototype named the Abadal Continental never materialised.

Abadal also produced the Abadal Y-12 aero-engine, a multiple bank in-line engine with twelve cylinders in three banks of four arranged in a Y.

Imperia Automobiles
(Redirected from Imperia (car))
Impéria Automobiles was a Belgian automobile factory, active from 1906 until 1948. The factory in Nessonvaux, Liège, Belgium, had a rooftop test track since 1928.

Standard Vanguard convertible built by Imperia
Impéria was a Belgian automobile manufactured from 1906 until 1948. Products of the Ateliers Piedboeuf of Liège, the first cars were designed by the German Paul Henze. These were four-cylinders of 3, 4.9, and 9.9 litres. The next year, the company moved to Nessonvaux, Trooz municipality, and began production in the old Pieper factory. Impéria produced a monobloc 12 hp (8.9 kW) in 1909. In 1910, the company merged with Springuel.
The Nessonvaux factory began producing Impéria-Abadals from about 1916. In 1921, it built three ohc 5.6-litre straight-eights. These were quickly replaced by an ephemeral ohc 3-litre 32-valve four-cylinder which had a top speed of 90 mph (140 km/h). This was followed by an 1100 cc slide-valve 11/22 hp four designed by Couchard, one of the first cars ever built with a sunroof. Its engine rotated counterclockwise, and its transmission brake also served as a servo for those on the front wheels. In 1927 a six-cylinder of 1624 cc appeared; this had been available in three-carburettor Super Sports form from 1930.
In 1925, the company hired Louis de Monge as chief research engineer. Some of his work included torsion bar suspension and automatic transmissions. De Monge left in 1937 to join Bugatti, where he would design the Bugatti 100P racer plane.
Around and on top of the factory buildings, there was a test track over 1 km long. The track was built in 1928. The only other rooftop test tracks were on Fiat’s Lingotto plant, opened in 1923, and Palacio Chrysler in Buenos Aires, opened in 1928.
Over the course of four years, Impéria took over three other Belgian car manufacturers: Métallurgique (1927), Excelsior (1929), and Nagant (1931). From 1934 until the company folded it built mainly front-wheel-drive Adlers with Belgian-made coachwork. The company merged with Minerva in 1934, but they split in 1939.
In addition to its production in Belgium, Impéria made a number of cars in Great Britain; these were assembled at a factory in Maidenhead.
From 1947 to 1949 Impéria built its last model TA-8 which combined an Adler Trumpf Junior-type chassis with an engine originally intended for the Amilcar Compound.
After 1948 Impéria assembled Standard Vanguards under license and also built a unique convertible version. After Standard decided to set up a new factory in Belgium, the factory was left without work and had to close doors in 1957.

Glas (company)
Jump to navigationJump to search
Glas Goggomobil 250
Hans Glas GmbH is a former German automotive company, which was based in Dingolfing. Originally a maker of farm machinery, Glas evolved first into a producer of motor scooters, then automobiles. It was purchased by BMW in 1966, mainly to gain access to Glas’s patents; they were the first to use a timing belt with an overhead camshaft in an automotive application. Its limited model range was shortly phased out by its new parent.
History
Glas 1700 GT Cabriolet, 1965
Mechanic Andreas Glas founded a repair company for agricultural machines at 1895 in Pilsting. He named the company Andreas Glas, Reparaturwerkstätte für landwirtschaftliche Maschinen mit Dampfbetrieb (in English: Andreas Glas, repair-shop for steam-powered agricultural machines). During the summer periods about 16 people worked for him. In 1905 Andreas Glas’ company built their first crop sowing machines (seed drill). He then had sufficient work to employ all his employees during the winters. The production of sowing machines rose from year to year:
Winter period 1905/06 – 10 sowing machines
Autumn 1906 – 20 pieces
Winter period 1906/07 – 40 machines
1907 – 60 pieces
Winter period 1907/08 – 254 sowing machines.
Since 1905 Glas had a branch office in Dingolfing. He started to produce in Dingolfing in 1908 with 150 sowing machines per year. The production count rose each year.
After World War II, the market for sowing machines was declining, and the company began building little carrows and later working machines for bakers along with sowing machines.
Products
Goggomobil TS 250 Coupe.
Glas were known for small cars like the Goggomobil. However, in 1964 the company introduced the Glas 1300GT coupe and later the 1700GT. The body was designed by Pietro Frua. However competition, mostly from British cars, was tough and in 1966 they released the 2600GT powered by a SOHC V8 engine, with a volume just under 2.6 litres. However this didn’t help and later the same year the company was sold to BMW. The Glas models were kept in production by BMW, but fitted with BMW engines. The Glas 1300 GT coupe was fitted with a 1.6-litre BMW engine and renamed BMW 1600 GT. BMW also fitted a 3-litre engine and named it 3000 GT. This model kept the Glas name, but had a BMW logo in the front and rear. In 1968 BMW created their own large coupe, the BMW 2500 CS, and this meant the end for Glas. 277 copies of 2600 GT was made and 389 of the 3000 GT.
Scooters
Glas Goggo scooter with sidecar
In 1951 Andreas Glas saw the Vespa scooter from Piaggio in Verona, Italy. He was so enthused that he began production of motor scooters that July.
The scooter debuted with a 125 cc motor, increased over time to 150 cc and 200 cc. Until 1956 46,181 motor scooters were built. Production of scooters stopped because of the Goggomobil cars. From 1953 on, load-carrying scooters were built as well. With the 200 cc engine and 9.5 bhp, they had a load capacity of 200 kg.

Absorption by BMW
In 1962 BMW released the BMW 1500. The popular four-door compact’s success exhausted the production capacity of the Munich plant. In 1966 management decided to buy Glas and absorb the Glas model line. Most of Glas’ existing lineup was retired, while some models ended up being badged as BMWs until the company was fully absorbed. It was reputed that the acquisition was mainly to gain access to Glas’ development of the timing belt with an overhead camshaft in automotive applications, although some saw Glas’ Dingolfing plant as another incentive. However, this factory was outmoded and BMW’s biggest immediate gain was, according to themselves, a stock of highly qualified engineers and other personnel. The Glas factory began the manufacture of BMW front and rear axles until they could be modernized and fully incorporated into BMW.
BMW immediately retired most of the Glas range, including all of the outdated microcars.
Changes under BMW
The 04-type, the GT and the 1700 sedan were given BMW badges in the last year of their production.
The GT was reengineered and so it was built with a BMW engine and rear axle and sold as BMW 1600 GT until 1968.
The V8 got a bigger engine constructed by Glas and was also sold until 1968 as BMW-GLAS 3000 V8.
The 1700 sedan was built and sold by a South African importer with several changes as BMW 1800 SA until 1974.
The Goggomobil T300, T400, T400 Coupé (renamed Sport), Glas Isar T700 and the Glas 1204 were licensed for manufacture in Argentina during the 1960s.
Closure
In the late 1960s BMW shut down Glas and built entirely new production facilities, which would eventually become an important production site. As of 2008, BMW’s Dingolfing branch is BMW’s largest factory, with 22,000 workers producing 5-, 6- and 7-Series cars and as well as bodies for Rolls-Royce.
