I finished Guardians of the Dafeng.

I'm still trying to collect my thoughts after episode 40 because not a single part of me expected any of the breaking into the imperial palace, violence towards the bad guys, shirking his teacher for what he believed was right, the beheading(s), accusing the emperor of wrongdoing. It was the determination to do what was right, to get vengeance for ZXH and the 380,000 innocent civilians, no matter the consequences to himself was just...whoa.

Whatever anyone feels about comedies is valid - I rarely go in for them myself and I know a lot of folks had big feelings about this being so silly upfront - but I truly think Wang Hedi absolutely nailed this role. He is obviously so, SO suited to comedic performances. It's his wheelhouse and happy place without a doubt. And he delivered so much humor in such a fresh and charming way (all the obvious bloopers they left in as the final scenes, the silly shenanigans with his other copper gongs, the family dynamic). But he also really shined in this big, poignant, heartbreaking moment too. The emotion in this scene reminded me so much of him grieving the loss of Xiao Lanhua in Love Between Fairy and Devil. He cries so hard and it's not pretty and it's not delicate, it's gutting. The emotions that he digs up from somewhere - the sheer agony and heartbreak that he shows to the world - really is astonishing for someone his age.

And seeing the BTS of both this scene (and the scene in LBFAD), you can tell he goes to a seriously brutal place because it takes him many moments and even many more hugs to come out of it.

The ending was definitely strange and open and definitely in anticipation of a second season but since that's always unlikely in cdramaland, I'll just count it as finished and an open ending is fine in this instance.

talking to The Girl yesterday & she mentioned how she had a raging headache that wouldn’t go away & she didn’t know what was up. i asked if it could be a sinus headache & she was like “no i don’t think so”. fast forward to today, we’re on the phone & she’s like “it may have been a sinus headache, my nose is stopped up & i feel sinus pressure around it” which 1) made me melt because “stopped up” is adorable 2) led to me giving her advice on how to naturally help with congestion (hot showers/steam, tea, warm compresses, sinus massages, etc). very thankful she didn’t ask how i knew that & she was very appreciative of the advice & is going to keep me updated. i feel so bad for her but oh my god i was trying so hard to keep my cool

she also sniffled a whole bunch to which i’d giggle & go “aw” & “oh honey” & “cute” which i think flustered her because she was like “i don’t even notice i do it until you point it out”. i’m glad she thinks it’s sweet that i find it adorable because yes i am Very aware that she constantly sniffles

Had fun at my friends wedding this past weekend! I decided on the new dress thank you to all who voted.

The only real downside to night was losing my pretty purple bow from dancing too hard 😭😭 I tried to find after but it was totally gone. It’s sad because I took the time to bedazzle it all special (and I get attached to things and hate losing them) but I guess I will just have to get more new even sparklier bows now 🤷‍♀️

And also my shoes broke 😭😭 they were really old (like bought them when I was 12 old) so I figured it was a possibility so brought back ups in my car. They were just so pretty though! I will maybe try to fix them. It’s a good reminder though that even if you don’t use things they will go bad over time, so use your nice things when you have a chance

I know I've said it before but every rewatch I do cements this thought further - elijah wood's performance in LOTR is absolutely insane, they really had a character whose name means "wise by experience", hired an 18-year-old to do it, and he delivered so much that not only is it a beautiful and moving role on its own, it's a performance equal to those of the absolute powerhouses he played side by side with like ian holm and ian mckellen. to name just a few
